Dan, Manny, & Billy welcome writer and director Jonathan Salemi to talk all about filming the indie action drama film The Last Deal. “A couple places ran with the headline, [The Last Deal] is the biggest guerrilla film in the last two decades. I have no proof of that or against it, but I'd say we're definitely in the running.” -Jonathan Salemi This episode of Nostalgia 101 is a detailed lesson from writer and director Jonathan Salemi on what it takes to make an indie film in the recent state of the movie industry. Jonathan starts with his experience interning at Sony Pictures to field producing for major networks like Lifetime and History Channel. He talks about the many stories behind filming The Last Deal guerrilla style in LA during the COVID-19 lockdowns, the true story that inspired the movie, and his experience shooting in various LA locations without permits. Jonathan answers the guys' questions about specific scenes in the movie, he shares some behind-the-scenes anecdotes and what went into casting. They end the episode with Jonathan's upcoming project and his ranking of the Rocky movies. There's so much more! Everything Everywhere All At Once turned into an unlikely hit last year, then went on to win 7 Oscars just a few months ago. That means it was time for us to cover it because we always review the winner of Best Picture at some point later that summer. Actually, we talked a lot in this episode about many different Oscars shows and we jumped around a lot regarding the plot...which is fitting for a movie about the multiverse. The Daniels' frenetic sci-fi, comedy, action-adventure family drama is a mash-up of jokes, pathos, horror, sincerity and lots of outright silliness. Michelle Yeoh and Stephanie Hsu make a terrific mother/daughter combination, while Hsu's alter ego is one of the best villains in recent years. Kwan & Scheinert's 2nd film uses those stars (along with Jamie Lee Curtis and Ke Huy Quan) to explore a slew of ideas...and references many different forms of entertainment in doing that exploring. Still, considering some people have compared this to a Tik Tok video, EEAAO is a fairly simple story about love, family and acceptance. There's a lot of glitz and craziness, but it's basically just a family fighting to connect and stay together, rather than tearing each other apart...or tearing other versions of each other apart. So try to wrap your head around the idea of infinite universes but also just be a rock as the 525th Have You Ever Seen tries to get to the bottom of one of the craziest experiences we've had at the movies in quite a while. Well, Actually: Martin McDonagh HAS won an Oscar, but it was for Best Live Action Short Film in 2006, not for any of his nominations for writing, directing or producing. In this episode we speak with Academy Award winning film director, Chris Overton. Chris received the 'Best Live Action Short Film' Oscar for ‘The Silent Child,' along with his wife, Rachel Shenton, who wrote the project. Chris shares how he started life in the industry as an actor, performing in films directed by Joel Schumacher and Roman Polanski, and the current projects he's working on. We discuss the road to the Oscars with 'The Silent Child,' as well as what happens after you win an Oscar! Dhá ghradam, díomá agus bród ar na Gaeil: scéal na nOscar. It was a big night for the Irish film industry last night at the 2023 Oscars with a total of 14 nominations for actors and films. Oíche mhór d'earnáil scannánaíochta na hÉireann a bhí ann aréir ag Gradaim Oscars na bliana 2023 agus 14 ainmniúchán ar an iomlán faighte ag aisteoirí agus ag scannáin. The award for Best Live-Action Short Film was awarded to the film 'An Irish Goodbye', and the film's directors, Tom Berkeley and Ross White, accepted the Award on stage last night, together with the main actors James Martin and Séamus O'Hara. Bronnadh gradam don Ghearrscannán Beo-Aicsin is Fearr ar an scannán 'An Irish Goodbye', agus ghlac stiúrthóirí an scannáin, Tom Berkeley agus Ross White, leis an nGradam ar an stáitse aréir, na príomhaisteoirí James Martin agus Séamus O'Hara ina dteannta. Also, the man from Dublin, Richard Baneham, brought the legs with him in the video makeup category for the second time for his work on the film 'Avatar: The Way of Water', and he started his speech in Irish. Chomh maith leis sin, thug fear Bhaile Átha Cliath, Richard Baneham, na cosa leis i gcatagóir na maisíochta físe don dara huair as a chuid oibre ar an scannán ‘Avatar: The Way of Water', agus tús curtha i nGaeilge aige lena óráid. Although the film 'The Banshees of Inisherin' received nine nominations, Martin McDonagh's film failed to win any awards. Cé go bhfuair an scannán ‘The Banshees of Inisherin' naoi gcinn d'ainmniúcháin, níor éirigh le scannán Martin McDonagh aon ghradam a bhuachan. Paul Mescal and Colin Farrell were among the nominations for the best actor, but the award was given to Brendan Fraser for his part in the film 'The Whale' and to Michelle Yeoh from the film 'Everything Everywhere All at Once'. Bhí Paul Mescal agus Colin Farrell i measc na n- ainmniúchán don aisteoir is fearr, ach bronnadh an gradam ar Brendan Fraser as an bpáirt a bhí aige sa scannán ‘The Whale' agus ar Michelle Yeoh ón scannán ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once'. Although Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan were nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, it was Ke Huy Quan who won the award, for his part in the film 'EverythingEverywhere All at Once'. Cé go raibh Brendan Gleeson agus Barry Keoghan ainmnithe don Aisteoir is Fearr i Ról Tacaíochta, ba é Ke Huy Quan a bhuaigh an gradam, as an bpáirt a bhí aige sa scannán ‘EverythingEverywhere All at Once'. In the Best International Feature Film category, 'All Quiet on the Western Front' got the best over 'The Quiet Girl'. I gcatagóir an Scannáin Lánfhada Idirnáisiúnta is Fearr, fuair ‘All Quiet on the Western Front' an ceann is fearr ar ‘An Cailín Ciúin'. After the ceremony, TG4's Commissioning Editor and Executive Producer of 'An Cailín Ciúin', Máire Ní Chonláin, said that the film had been an achievement and that TG4 was forever very proud of what the director, Colm Bairéad, had achieved. the producer, Cleona Ní Chrualaoi, and everyone involved in the film. I ndiaidh an tsearmanais, dúirt Eagarthóir Coimisiúnaithe TG4 agus Léiritheoir Feidhmiúcháin ‘An Cailín Ciúin', Máire Ní Chonláin, go raibh éacht déanta ag an scannán agus go raibh TG4 an-bhródúil go deo as a bhfuil bainte amach ag an stiúrthóir, Colm Bairéad, an léiritheoir, Cleona Ní Chrualaoi, agus ag gach éinne a raibh baint acu leis an scannán. She indicated that the Cine4 Scheme is going to go from strength to strength in the coming years. Thug sí le fios go bhfuil Scéim Cine4 le dul ó neart go neart sna blianta amach romhainn. The President of Ireland congratulated the winners of the two Oscars that will be taking place in Ireland. Rinne Uachtarán na hÉireann tréaslú le buaiteoirí an dá Oscar a bheidh ag déanamh ar Éirinn.

This is a black arts and culture site. We will be exploring the African Diaspora via the writing, performance, both musical and theatrical (film and stage), as well as the visual arts of Africans in the Diaspora and those influenced by these aesthetic forms of expression. I am interested in the political and social ramifications of art on society, specifically movements supported by these artists and their forebearers. It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes. Ashay! 1. We continue our discussion of Veterans Healing Veterans (VHV) @ the Veterans Transition Center in Monterey county and in CA State Prisons. We are joined by the founder, participants and facilitators: Sally McNeill, Craig Farrell, Randal Williams, Marcus Blevins-- participants VHV; Jenny Nesler, VHV; Ron Self, Founder, VHV; Bobby Emory, VHV; Alejandra Saldana, Caseworker, VTC/VHV 2. Deodoceo Habi, veteran, joins us to talk about his healing journey outlined in his book: "Memoirs in the Moment" (2021). 3. David M. Massey, the first African American Filmmaker ever Oscar-Nominated for “Best Live Action Short Film” (for 1992's “Last Breeze of Summer” which he produced,) joins us to talk about his newest Short Film Project: “Passage.” The film presents a West African culture that faces an unprecedented challenge in the year 1600.
In an almost chilling and unnerving serendipitous coincidence, Frimas the new short film by writer and director Marianne Farley was released for festival audiences, right at the time politicians in Texas passed a bill banning abortions past 6 weeks. Set in Montreal, Canada in the near future, Cara (Karine Gonthier-Hyndman) is a woman who has no choice but to make the extremely dangerous and heartbreaking choice of having an illegal abortion, after the medical procedure has been re-criminalized in the country. In the back of a meat truck, Cara's life forever changes as she comes face-to-face with the stark and grim reality of just how dangerous the abortion ban is. Surrounded by the hanging carcasses of pigs, she's left no choice but to put her trust in Dr. Hubert (Chantal Baril) a complete stranger, whose own fear of being caught and arrested causes friction during their interactions.Though set in Canada, the situation is one that too many women around the world are placed in daily as abortion is either still illegal, or allowed under very specific circumstances deemed appropriate by politicians who know nothing about the women's whose lives they want to control. In our discussion, Marianne and I spoke about the ways society continues to place pressure on women to conform to conservative and cruel ideals, the struggle for bodily autonomy, and women's reproductive rights all around the world. To learn more about FRIMAS, and Marianne's work visit MarianneFarley.comMarianne Farley is a director/screenwriter, producer, and actress from Montreal, Canada. Her second critically acclaimed short film MARGUERITE won over forty awards around the globe and earned an Academy Award® nomination for Best Live Action Short Film in 2019. Marianne is in the post production phase of her first feature film NORTH OF ALBANY (co-written with Claude Brie).
