On this week's episode of You Are What You Read, we are joined by quintessential music maker and founding member of The Four Seasons, Bob Gaudio. Bob's career in music started at a young age. At the age of 15, he co-wrote his first hit, "Who Wears Short Shorts," for a group he started, The Royal Teens. His song, "Sherry," in the early '60s, launched The Four Seasons' incredible string of hits. At the time, he also began a productive and creative relationship with Bob Crewe, a teaming that produced an amazing run of hits for The Four Seasons, including "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Rag Doll," "Walk Like a Man," "Bye Bye Baby," "Silence Is Golden," and in 1967, Frankie Valli's classic, "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You." Gaudio also produced and co-wrote with his wife, Judy Parker, "Who Loves You," for The Four Seasons and Billboard Magazine's longest-charting single (54 weeks), "December '63 (Oh, What a Night)." Bob has collaborated with Neil Diamond, Barbra Streisand and Frank Sinatra, and has produced albums for Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Roberta Flack, Barry Manilow, Peabo Bryson and The Beach Boys, to cite just a few. This is a conversation about Bob's greatest hits- the songs we will be tuning up this summer!  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Bob Crewe1930- 2014Inducted Into The Songwriters Hall Of Fame In 1995.While songwriter/producer/recording star, Bob Crewe, is perhaps best remembered for the notable parade of hits penned with co-writer Bob Gaudio for Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, his songwriting credits began considerably earlier. In the early '50s, New Jersey-born Crewe first tasted success on the music charts with writing teammate Frank Slay with a batch of hits for a variety of artists. Among the best known were "Silhouettes" and "Daddy Cool" for The Rays; "Lah Dee Dah" and "Lucky Ladybug" for Billy and Lillie; and Freddy Cannon's "Tallahassee Lassie" and "Okefenokee."In 1961, Crewe also blossomed as a recording artist himself, with a pair of solo albums on Warwick Records. Kicks, featuring "The Whiffenpoof Song," and Crazy in the Heart, both produced by one of the more colorful producers of that time.Following these successes as a solo recording act, Crewe joined forces with songwriter Bob Gaudio, and good fortune struck almost immediately for the pair with the smash hit, "Sherry," for Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Thus began a years-long association with an uninterrupted string of chart successes including "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Rag Doll," "Ronnie," "Walk Like a Man," "Bye Bye Baby" and "Connie 0," as well as the monumental Frankie Valli hit, "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You."Other Crewe and Gaudio successes include "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine," for The Walker Brothers and "Silence Is Golden" by The Tremeloes. Following this phase, Crewe moved out again on his own to form The Bob Crewe Generation ("Music to Watch Girls By"), utilizing studio musicians and original material for instrumental music collections. Bob Crewe later teamed with writer, Charles Fox, in penning the soundtrack for Dino De Laurentis' film, "Barbarella."During the mid-sixties, Bob Crewe turned discoverer, locating a band known as Billy Lee and The Rivieras, which he later re-named, Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels, a major success on the charts with such Crewe-arranged smashes as "Jenny Take a Ride," "Devil With the Blue Dress On" and "Sock It to Me Baby."As the '60s were coming to a close, Crewe had also established his own recording firm, Crewe Records, which owned hits by Oliver and Lesley Gore, among others. Later, Crewe wrote and produced the song, "Eternity," which became an international hit for Vicki Carr. Following a short stay with Motown Records, when he produced what turned out to be Bobby Darin's final album, Crewe rejoined forces with Bob Gaudio and Frankie Valli, and bought back from Motown the tape master for Valli's "My Eyes Adored You," a song co-written with Kenny Nolan, which became a huge new hit for Valli on Private Stock Records. The song "Lady Marmalade," another joint effort for Crewe and Nolan, went on to reach hit status and also helped re-establish Patti LaBelle as an artist of major stature.Still later, Crewe and Gaudio teamed with another writer, Jerry Corbetta, in penning the hit song "You're Looking Like Love to Me," for Roberta Flack and Peabo Bryson. Crewe also collaborated with Corbetta and the writer, Ellie Greenwich, in producing the original cast album for Greenwich's Broadway musical, "Leader of the Pack."In addition to his music, Crewe also owned impressive credentials in the art world. He has designed numerous album covers and has been featured in several one-man gallery showings, including The Earl McGrath Gallery and Thomas Solomon's Garage in Los Angeles.

Bob Gaudio was inducted into the Songwriters, Rock and Roll, and the New Jersey Hall of Fame.  He was the principal writer & an original member of The Four Seasons, as in Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. He wrote and/or co-wrote “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don't Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Can't Take My Eyes Off You” and numerous others. He produced a number of songs for Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Roberta Flack & others. He co-produced the Frank Sinatra album Watertown His longtime association with Neil Diamond yielded seven albums.   It seems like almost everything Bob was involved with was wildly successful. Born in da Bronx and moved to New Jersey, he created the music for the hit Tony Award winning Broadway musical Jersey Boys, in which he was also portrayed. He is now the co-Lead producer of the sensational Neil Diamond Broadway musical A Beautiful Noise. In this exclusive interview, Bob discusses: -How his upbringing led him down his musical path -How his immersion in music and confidence from an early age helped his meteoric level of success starting in his teens -The main secret behind his success that is also the secret behind all success -What about his career he is most proud of and why?   -How the original band The Four Lovers evolved into the Four Seasons in 1960  -How the evolution occurred where he ended up becoming The Producer of The Four Seasons  -Bob's favorite songs -What inspired the song Cheri?  -Was Can't Take My Eyes Off of You inspired by anyone? -How he feels about the streaming business today in a contemporary world  -Of all of the acts he worked with outside of The Four Seasons, which one intrigued him most.   -How it was like producing the Neil Diamond / Barbra Streisand duet You Don't Bring Me Flowers and the Neil Diamond Album of the same name  -His role as co-lead producer of the Neil Diamond Broadway musical A Beautiful Noise. -What Bob expects audiences to feel during the musical and how he wants audiences to feel after they leave the show -What about the show he is most proud of?    -What he thinks makes Neil Diamond & his music able to transcend the usual fading plateau of success & instead be as strong as ever in now a remarkable 7 decades of musical success where his classic songs like Sweet Caroline still resonates today & even where Gen Z can sing the lyrics of.  -What would Bob Gaudio want to be most remembered for considering his breath of work and life has had so many highpoints?

Thanks to this episode I have a new favorite romantic comedy to add to my list so I'm grateful for my guests for bringing their A-game to this conversation and please do follow their work as well as discover Joan Micklin Silver's films in any form possible! We also briefly preview the upcoming Chicago Critics Film Festival! Stay tuned next month for a lot to come featuring both Bill Ackerman and former co-host Patrick Ripoll. I'm taking a little time off for my birthday month but there will be a surprise episode as always to make the occasion :) 00:00 - 20:19 - Introduction / Catching Up / CCFF 20:20 - 01:31:44 - JMS' First Few Films (Hester Street, Between The Lines, Chilly Scenes Of Winter) 01:31:45 - 02:10:49 - Crossing Delancey, Loverboy, Big Girls Don't Cry 02:10:50 - 02:27:32 - Other Films 02:27:33 - 02:41:03 - Top 3 JMS Films / Outro The Chicago Critics Film Festival: https://www.chicagocriticsfilmfestival.com/ The Projection Booth Covers Chilly Scenes Of Winter w/JMS: https://www.projectionboothpodcast.com/2017/02/episode-310-chilly-scenes-of-winter-1979.html Read Marya's Work on JMS: https://www.moviefone.com/news/joan-micklin-silvers-daughter-marisa-on-the-4k-resortation-of-hester-street/ https://www.moviefone.com/news/how-joan-micklin-silver-paved-the-way-for-chloe-zhao-other-women-directors-today/ Watch JMS Films On Mubi: https://mubi.com/specials/joan-micklin-silver Follow / Subscribe To Marya: https://oldfilmsflicker.substack.com   Check Out Bill's Podcast, Supporting Characters: https://www.nowplayingnetwork.net/supportingcharacters

Yes, another episode where I make reference the Netflix hit series "After Life" with Ricky Gervais. Again, if you have not watched this show it needs to be on your list. Only 3 short seasons but incredibly powerful seasons. Now...on to the podcast; Many people, especially men find it difficult to cry. For some, it was handed down thru the generations that men simply don't cry. At the same time there was hit song years ago that said "Big Girls Don't Cry". I was never much for crying and even when I felt like It I would try my hardest to hide it. However, since losing my Pam and taking on the role of a widower, I've found that crying can be a good thing. And believe it or not, sometimes I watch things to intentionally make my cry. Sounds crazy, I know. But, take a listen and see what you think. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jack-church/support

This exhibit is called The Vietnam War: The Music. Our mission here at the Music Museum is to support all Vietnam Veterans and those who serve the United States, then and now. We thank you for your service. Early-on, in Vietnam, soldiers turned to music as a lifeline to the home front they’d promised to defend. Rock & roll (R&R) really became rest & relaxation (R&R) for the troops. It was this music that got you through another day, another day closer to going home. Music was a big part of a soldier’s down time that centered within the hooches of Vietnam. The music that was popular during the Vietnam War was, and is still, therapy. There are songs you can remember, and then there are songs you REALLY remember. Many of these songs will have a special meaning for you. A place, a brother, a time gone by. This program is for you, the Vietnam Vets, who will never forget. Our goal with The Vietnam War: The Music is to honor the fallen and the survivors with the music that got them through “just one more day”. Our shows are broadcast around the world. They say thank you & “welcome home” to all Vietnam Vets. There is no opinion offered on the War. It’s all about the music. For your service and your sacrifice, this is The Vietnam War: The Music. Small Biz Matters – a half hour program each week where you can work ON your business rather than IN it.with Alexi Boyd, broadcaster, advocate and small business owner.Date: 21 July 2020   There are certain types of stories we all listen to in times of crisis. Stories of strength when overcoming personal hardship, of growth in economic slumps, of great leadership when dealing with unusual situations, and those ones which inspire us when we simply don’t want to adult anymore.   Well this story will tick the box ALL OF THE ABOVE.   With literally no previous retail experience Karen Edbrooke started Big Girls Don’t Cry Anymore, using extraordinary work ethic and desire to assist women, it is now  a rare success story in a weird world of retail closures. Founded before social media and online sales, she has been forced to adapt not only the way she sells to clients but how she interacts with them. Her team has completely changed, her products have evolved, and her business is a great example of how the retail world is now survival of the fittest.   Welcome to the show Karen.   Topics we’ll be covering: Growing your online sales Where was the starting point? Did you divert away from your strategy or start over in the crisis? Socials – did you increase your budget? employing the right people & the ideal worker who can adapt top tips on finding the right fit Passionate about upskilling retail workers in IT what the industry leaders can do to improve the candidates Helping the local business community mentored other female entrepreneurs using her space to support other businesses Operating in times of crisis Adjusting your mindset & staying focus on what you want to achieve, keeping your team focussed To find out more go to their website: https://brastogo.com.au/   About our Guest: Big Girls Don’t Cry Anymore was founded by Karen Edbrooke in Brisbane in 1992. Edbrooke got inspiration for the business whilst recovering from a serious car accident.  Edbrooke grew increasingly frustrated by the challenges that larger women faced in the fashion and lingerie industry.  She believed that mainstream lingerie manufacturers in Australia ignored the needs of larger women.  Upon realising that the Australian lingerie industry was ignoring a significant portion of the female population, Edbrooke decided to take action.   Founded before the birth of the internet and the existence of Facebook, the business has been forced to adapt, but has done so with immense success.    Big Girls Don’t Cry Anymore has a large social media following.  They currently have the largest social media following of any independent Lingerie Store in Australia. They currently have over 105,000 ‘followers’ on their Facebook page and hundreds of thousands of followers on other platforms.   Before her accident, Edbrooke was working at the National Australia Bank.  She never went to university and she is completely self-taught in business.  She uses her experience to teach others about how to start a business from scratch.   Edbrooke’s passion for her brand, extraordinary work ethic and desire to assist women to find the right fitting bra has helped her to create one of the country’s leading business success stories.  The business is now the most successful retailer of lingerie and swimwear for women of all sizes with customers across the nation and around the world.   Services are also offered virtually through virtual bra fittings, live streamed fashion parades and a number of other innovative offerings.

The Becoming Heroes Podcast

Boo - an extended version of the blog to be published on Moodscope.com on 25th May. I hope you didn't jump… for I mean, “Boo…” as in, “Boo hoo,” - crying, not as in, “Boo!” (Like in some ScoobyDoo thing!) When was the last time you had a really good, unrestrained cry? A proper sob? You've heard people say, “Go and get a proper job,” well, I'm talking about having a proper sob. I've read the unwritten manual for, “Men in the West,” (and their behaviour) and the invisible entry is very clear on this topic: “Big Boys Don't Cry!” Like stealing a look at my Sister's Jackie Magazine's problem page when I was growing up, I then stole a look at the unwritten manual for, “Women in the West,” (and their behaviours) and it said almost the same: “Big Girls Don't Weep!” (Now, I made that all up, there are no manuals, and our culture on the subject of, “Crying like a Baby,” is equally all made up. It's all invented. Babies cry because it's the authentic response to distress.) Think how many times, as soon as a baby is crying, the comforter, this dummy thing, gets stuffed in their mouth, so that the message is clear: “Babies shouldn't cry!” This is all nonsense! We are meant to cry when we are unhappy, suffering, and are distressed. Whether you ever saw yourself as a, “Mummy's Girl” or a, “Mummy's Boy,” we are all, psychologically at heart, a Mummy's Boy or Girl. Like needing a good sob, we need our mummy. Mum's have many roles but one of the best is just to be there when the weight of our young world becomes just too much to process and we have a little breakdown… a sob. The hug and the comforting words, “There, there…” are enough to see us through to a new equilibrium, a new level of resilience, but we need the hug, and we need the cry. My Truth The truth is, Mum never was much of a hugger, and I don't ever remember her saying, “There, there… this too shall pass.” However, I do remember, vividly, when Penelope, as a mature, sensible, adult woman, got so low as to simply mouth the words, barely audibly, “I want my Mummy…” Her Mum died young and my Mum passed on last year, so today I'm talking about the generalisation of what, “Mum,” could mean to all of us, and recommending the power of sobbing to help our authentic inner child. Guanyin Eastern Philosophy has the figure, Guanyin. Described by Alain de Botton as a saintly female figure associated strongly with mercy, compassion, and kindness. She has shrines all over the East. The Mother Figure. Adults go to her shrines and feel perfectly at liberty to burst into tears. And this isn't always about sorrow. Sometimes it's about being overwhelmed with a sense of compassion and love. Have the needs of childhood really disappeared? Diminished, they maybe, but I would suggest each of us still has within that three-year-old child in occasional need of comfort. When faced with unconditional kindness, or deep sorrow, or even the overwhelming enormity of life's complexities and capriciousness, we need a moment or more of release. I've never been a Catholic but listening to the Beatles' song, “Let It Be,” I'm reassured that, “Mother Mary,” offered them some similar non-judgmental comfort, non-judgmental comfort like that of Guanyin. So, “When we find ourselves in times of trouble, may the Mother Figure come to you and me, speaking words of wisdom… Let it be.” No Answer Necessary Interestingly, in these situations, Guanyin, Mother Mary, the Mother Figure – there's no answer there, there's just the words of comfort… and the presence… and the cuddle… and the permission to sob. The Power of The Carpenters As for me, I'll be bunging The Carpenters on the music machine, (“I'll Say Goodbye To Love,” and other such uplifting songs), running a bath – complete with bubbles, candles, privacy, a glass of red wine, and a good long sob. No guilt. No shame. No hesitation. Do you need any more permission to do the same? Let it be.

Hot off "Commendatori" last week, in which the gang traveled to Italy, the show introduced Furio, and we were treated to arguably the best Paulie Walnuts episode of the show, this week brings us an incredible Christopher episode. In "Big Girls Don't Cry," originally aired February 13, 2000, Chris Moltisante has been signed up (by his girlfriend, Adriana) for a class called "acting for writers," in which the teacher immediately informs the class that "the actor is an instrument for conveying ideas." As funny as Paulie in Italy was, Christopher in acting class might be even funnier, whether it's crushing at improv, expanding his range with James Dean, or getting offended by the mere sight of one of his classmates' dumb faces (could you blame him? Mitch from Hartsdale is the worst). Is David Chase better at making fun of therapy or at making fun of the arts? Meanwhile, Furio has come to America, Big Pussy has been passed over, and Richie Aprile has moved into Tony's mom's house with his sister, Janice. Once again, this is one of my favorite episodes and it ends with an all-time great tracking shot scene of Furio unleashing strangely humorous ultra-violence. To help us discuss it all, we have this week's guest, Rafael Shimunov, from JFREJ (Jews for Racial and Economic Justice) and The Jewish Vote. I hope he loves our dumb theme song!
