Tune in here to this Tuesday edition of Breaking With Brett Jensen! Breaking Brett Jensen kicks off the show by giving a quick overview of Pete Hegseth's confirmation hearing this morning. He then moves onto the Mecklenburg magistrate situation from last Friday. The Cornelius Police Department posted their Facebook page about the situation saying, "(A Mecklenburg County Magistrate), ordered the release of this defendant to the custody of his parents in lieu of a bond." The defendant had been charged with 10 counts of Felony Second-Degree Sexual Exploitation of a Minor. The Cornelius Police Department's post claimed that they found the defendant's release, "troubling and concerning," given the seriousness of his charges. Later, Brett shares an interview with Daniel Redford, President of the Charlotte Chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police, to share his thoughts on the situation. 143:  Elevating Your Grants Program as a Nonprofit Leader (Autumn Keck)SUMMARYIs your overall fundraising plan built on a solid foundation of a comprehensive grant writing program?  If not, can you identify the vital readiness steps necessary to best prepare your organization for success?  In episode #143 of the Path Podcast, Autumn Keck, a fundraising expert with over two decades of experience in grant writing and major gifts solicitation, addresses these questions and more. She explains how best to present the strength of an organization and resist the urge to adjust your focus to “fit the mold” of a possible funder, just one of the key factors needed to bolster an organization's chance for grant funding.  As Patton discusses in his upcoming book, Your Path to Nonprofit Leadership releasing March 8th, professional development is a vital skill for the growth and success of every nonprofit leader.  Autumn expounds on this by discussing specific resources and training to enhance your fundraising and grant writing skills. Learn how to set realistic expectations among your organization's leaders and board around grant funding cycles and its impact on long term sustainable support. Like so many other sectors seeing a spike in remaining remote, nonprofit leaders are capitalizing on this shift by outsourcing such things as grant management where there's a potential utilization of higher talent at lower costs than retaining a full-time grant writer.ABOUT AUTUMNAutumn Keck is a fundraising expert with over 20 years of experience specializing in grant writing, major gift solicitation, and individual giving.  She began her fundraising career as Director of Development at Neighborhood House and then went on to work at the American University Washington College of Law, The JC Raulston Arboretum at North Carolina State University, and Girl Scouts of North Carolina Coastal Pines.  In 2010, she branched out as an independent grant writing consultant, which led to the formation of Scribe, LLC. As Founder and Principal Consultant of Scribe, LLC, a fundraising consulting firm specializing in grant management services, Autumn works to connect nonprofits to the philanthropic community by effectively sharing the organization's impact on the people they serve. Autumn and her team work closely with nonprofits to help them become grant ready, and grow their grant writing programs.  Scribe has helped raise millions of dollars by telling each organization's compelling story with a focus on their mission and community impact.Autumn is a graduate of North Carolina State University with a BA in Communications and a minor in Journalism. She serves on the Board of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Charlotte Chapter as the Higher Education Chair and is also member of the Grants Professionals Association, and the Queen City chapter of Jack and Jill of America. 017: How Do You Move from Manager to Senior Leader at Your Nonprofit? (Katherine Lambert)SUMMARYKatherine Lambert is passionate about professional development in the nonprofit sector and is a champion for internal candidates who can serve as senior leaders. Her advice provides great insight for other senior leaders who want to better develop their talent, but also provides many clues for those pursuing a new job in the charitable sector. Katherine talks about how she allocates professional development funds in her organization, and exactly what she asks in interviews to determine whether someone has the requisite skills but also the intangible “fit” dynamic that will better predict success. How can we better orient and onboard our talent - in the first 30 days - to assure long-term success? How do we better clarify job descriptions and job plans to align with the organization’s strategic plan, as well as assure a professional development path is clear going forward? Find out these answers and many more resources in this episode.ABOUT KATHERINEKatherine joined the Alzheimer’s Association, Western Carolina Chapter, in 2014 as its Chief Executive Officer. She works with a volunteer and staff team across the 49 counties in Central and Western North Carolina, and in 2017, her role expanded to serving as the Regional Leader for all chapters in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Prior to leading the Alzheimer’s Association, Katherine served as Executive Vice President for Girl Scouts, Hornets’ Nest Council for five years and as Chief Development Officer for an additional three years. She also founded and led The Lambert Group for four years providing strategic planning, fund development and training resources for non-profit organizations. Preceding her non-profit career, she spent six years in the financial services and headhunting industries. Katherine earned her bachelor’s degree in Political Science with a Certificate in Marketing and Management from Duke University and has achieved her CFRE (Certified Fundraising Executive) designation. Currently, she is an active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and Women Executives. This week I sat down with the most recognizable face (and beard) in the Charlotte startup scene, Mr. Jeff Brokaw. When he isn't mentoring aspiring entrepreneurs, Jeff is an Associate with the Venture Capital firm SierraMaya360, an early stage startup investment firm, as well as the director of the Charlotte Chapter of Startup Grind, a global startup community powered by Google for Entrepreneurs.  You may have seen him at events, and perhaps heard his story, but in this episode we get under the hood and find out what makes him tick. Jeff dishes on everything from launching his first web hosting company at age 14, to his day-to-day routine in the venture capital world. He also hits on some of his lesser-known pre-teen business ventures (Jeff's Shiny Shoes!), and what you should, and more importantly, shouldn't, be saying when you're pitching to an investor. Jeff's also lays down his blueprint for courting high-value mentors in any field.  As always, the podcast is available for download from the iTunes Store, Google Play, Stitcher Radio, and TuneIn.
