Over the past 18 months, Tesla has missed its sales goals, seen its share price fall and waded through a series of dramatic decisions from Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk, who cut car prices, fired much of the Supercharger team and announced nebulous plans to release a robotaxi. All of that looks like a pivot away from the original mission of making mass-market electric cars, but does Tesla going off course really matter to the EV transition? On this week's Zero, Bloomberg Opinion columnist Liam Denning digs into Tesla's strategy and what its evolution means for global adoption of electric cars. A U.S. labor agency has accused SpaceX of unlawfully firing employees who penned an open letter critical of CEO Elon Musk and creating an impression that worker activities were under surveillance by the rocket ship company. A Los Angeles-based regional director for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) filed a complaint on January 3 that consolidates eight unfair labor practice charges against SpaceX. The cases stem from the company's alleged actions following the circulation of the employees' letter back in June 2022. The letter, among other workplace concerns, called on executives to condemn Musk's public behavior on X — the platform then known as Twitter — and hold everyone accountable for unacceptable conduct. “As our CEO and most prominent spokesperson, Elon is seen as the face of SpaceX — every tweet that Elon sends is a de facto public statement by the company,” the open letter said at the time. The letter also referred to Musk's actions as a “frequent source of distraction and embarrassment.” A total of nine employees were soon terminated for their involvement in the letter, according to a November 2022 filing made on behalf of one of the employees to the NLRB, although only eight are included in January 3's complaint. In addition to the firings, the complaint accuses SpaceX of interrogating other workers about the letter, announcing that employees were terminated for their participation in the letter, and “inviting employees to quit if they disagreed with the behavior of Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk.” The complaint also alleges that some were shown screenshots of communications between employees about the letter, which “created an impression among (SpaceX's) employees that their protected concerted activities were under surveillance.” Reacting to the board's complaint, SpaceX sued the NLRB in federal court on January 4. The lawsuit says the NLRB is “unconstitutionally structured” and its action against the company “unlawful.” Addressing the board's complaint in its lawsuit, SpaceX lawyers say the employees' letter caused “significant distraction to SpaceX employees across the country.” It said the employees involved in the letter were fired for violating a number of company policies. Asian stocks looked set for a steady open Tuesday after a choppy U.S. session that saw Treasury yields and the dollar climb amid concern that inflation will force a quicker withdrawal of central bank stimulus. Australian shares slipped, while futures for Japan, Hong Kong and the U.S. were little changed. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 ended broadly flat. Tesla Inc. shares approached a bear market after Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk raised the idea of selling more of his stock. The carmaker later pared losses. Treasuries slid and the yield curve steepened on speculation the Federal Reserve may have to speed up policy tightening to fight price pressures that are broadening out from pandemic-linked snarls. Stronger-than-expected New York manufacturing data added to the case for an earlier interest-rate liftoff. Brought to you by PITCH - PhillipCapital Information Telecast Creative House

APPLE HIRES TESLA'S AUTOPILOT SOFTWARE DIRECTOR FOR CAR EFFORT - Apple Inc., bolstering its car-development efforts, hired a former engineer from Tesla Inc. who drew controversy this year for remarks about that company's Autopilot feature. - The iPhone maker tapped Christopher “CJ” Moore for its team working on a self-driving car, according to people with knowledge of the matter. Moore is working on the effort's software, reporting to Stuart Bowers, another former Tesla executive who joined Apple at the end of last year. Bowers had led Tesla's Autopilot team before departing in mid-2019. - At Tesla, Moore implied that Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk had overstated the capabilities of the Autopilot software. Earlier this year, California Department of Motor Vehicles officials interviewed Moore as part of investigations into the self-driving software. The department asked Moore about Musk claiming that Teslas would be capable of fully autonomous driving this year. - Moore signaled in response that Musk's statements didn't “match engineering reality,” according to a DMV memo summarizing the conversation. Many are speculating that these are the new factory wraps that the automaker has been talking about. - Recently, Tesla has been teasing new colors that are enabled by its paint shop at its Gigafactory in Berlin. However, the company has been talking about another way to get new colors on the vehicles too - Tesla announced that it would be offering wraps in China on its Weibo account. While the company made the announcement last year, there has been no confirmed example of wraps from them. - For the first time, Tesla has been spotted manufacturing new vehicles out of its Gigafactory in Shanghai, and the colors are all new. The images were captured by a drone used by reporter Jason Yang. - Some of the colors include turquoise, pink, and light blue. The car maker has added a Cloud Profiles section in its latest software release, which points to an "Enable Vehicle Sync" option for backing up driver profiles - cloud profiles could also make it easier to synchronize settings across multiple vehicles. According to Tesla Software Updates, synced settings include your display brightness, Autopilot and navigation options. It'd also be helpful to have your Stopping Mode synchronized, as that seriously changes how Tesla's braking functions. The facility will be the first branded Tesla Canada manufacturing facility in Canada and will produce state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment to be used at the Gigafactories located around the world in the production of batteries. - In 2019, Tesla acquired Ontario-based Hibar Systems, a manufacturing equipment company that makes machines used in battery cell production. Before Tesla took over, the company was based in Richmond Hill, Ontario, which is only a few minutes from Markham, where the new facility is going to be. It sounds like Tesla might be expanding the team into a bigger facility in the next town over in the suburbs of Toronto. The new three-week production halt will start Nov. 15. - GM said Friday that "battery module replacements remain the priority. We will continue to adjust Orion's production schedule moving forward to best support the recall." It boasts a top speed of 98 mph and a range of 68-89 miles, depending on riding style. The proprietary Z-Force 75-5 powerplant cranks out 46 hp and 78 lb-ft of torque. All of this is plenty to make the S a capable commuter and street bike, and the fuel savings should soften the $11,195 price tag. - Get Off The Road: Zero DS For about another $2500 you can add dual-sport drive and move up to the DS model. You'll get the same motor as the S, but the added grip (and added fun) two-wheel drive provides will cost you a few miles in range. - The Dual-Sport Monster: Zero DSR - For $15,695 you can bring home a Zero DSR and its Z-Force 75-7 motor, providing a whopping 70 hp and 102 mph top speed. The DSR also includes a mammoth 16.5 kWh battery (nearly twice the size of that in the S and DS), giving the the newest model a Tesla-like 163-mile range under mixed driving conditions. Unlike Seinfeld, Curb isn't a typical sitcom, but more of an improvisational cinema verité-like comedy that follows Larry in his life as a somewhat retired yet very successful writer and producer - Initially, he drove a Lexus GS 400, which he traded in for a first-generation Toyota Prius in season 2 of the show. Larry then drives newer versions of the popular Toyota-badged hybrid in following seasons, before making the switch to a BMW i3 for seasons 9 and 10. TESLA WILL MOVE ITS HEADQUARTERS TO TEXAS ""I'm excited to announce that we're moving our headquarters to Austin, Texas," CEO Elon Musk said Thursday during a Tesla shareholders meeting. The electric car company is currently based in Palo Alto, California, near its original headquarters in San Carlos, and its first factory, in Fremont. Musk said Thursday that there is a "limit to how big you can scale in the Bay area."" reported CNN Business: "He cited housing affordability and the long commutes it can create as hurdles for its current location, and said the Austin factory is five minutes from the airport and 15 minutes from downtown. The median home price in Palo Alto is $3.3 million" "Texas has been actively recruiting companies via its Texas Economic Development Act offering tax breaks to put new facilities in the state. Austin, with a top tech university and cultural events like South by Southwest, is a draw for tech employers." says CNBC: "Tesla has not been happy with one set of regulations in Texas at least. The state bans direct sales of cars. Instead, car companies sell their vehicles through independent, franchised dealerships there. In other states where similar laws apply Tesla has fought to change the rules or exploited some loopholes." The main point is that the global vehicle fleet stands at about 2 billion units, and not even 1% is all-electric yet." reported InsideEVs: "Assuming that 100% of new vehicles would be electric, at 100 million per year, it would still take 20 years from now to replace 2 billion vehicles. This 20-year period might be considered as the age of a vehicle until it finally goes to a junk yard." " says Fortune.com: "“We've had a fantastic year, we had record vehicle deliveries,” Musk told Tesla's annual shareholder meeting in Austin, Texas on Thursday. “It looks like we have a good chance of maintaining that. Basically, if we can get the chips we can do it. Hopefully this chip shortage will alleviate soon but I feel confident of being able to maintain something like at least above 50% for quite a while.” “One of the biggest challenges we had in Q3 was can we get enough ships,” he said. “There was a huge ship shortage.” Musk said the “significant cost pressure” in the supply chain had forced Tesla to increase car prices, at least temporarily. " One of the reasons any company choosed to located is incentives and subsidies, on that subject: "The German government is expected to decide before the end of the year just how much state aid Tesla will receive for its battery cell unit. The company is investing about €5 billion ($5.8 billion) in the plant. The German daily Tagesspiegel reports that this unusually high investment "means that the US car manufacturer can count on German state subsidies of €1.14 billion."" Thousands of people were brought in by special shuttle buses, with long queues forming at the Gruenheide site of the US electric vehicle maker's first European factory." reported Yahoo! News: "Demonstrators were already on the scene on Saturday morning, with a few people bearing signs like "Stop Tesla" and "water and forest aren't for private profit" gathered around 100 metres (yards) from the site. On the same 300-hectare plot, Musk also plans to build "the world's biggest battery factory". And the site will equally boast the "world's largest die-casting machine", said Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer, director of the Center for Automotive Research in Germany. In the event that the factory is not approved, the carmaker will be compelled to dismantle the entire works at its own cost. Despite the country's reputation for efficiency, major infrastructure projects are often slowed down by excess bureaucracy. Berlin's new international airport opened in October 2020, eight years later than first planned." And what did the German press have to say? "In guided tours lasting an hour and a half each, local residents were able to watch the whole production process involved in making a Tesla electric car such as the Model Y." saus DW.com: "People took their time to see what was going on in the stamping and casting units and later in the paint shop and assembly and quality control sections of the huge plant. Wherever questions arose, Tesla employees were on hand to answer them. Visitors were told that 80% of the workforce will be from Germany and 20% from 50 other countries. Also of some interest: 80% of all parts used in the Grünheide plant will come from European suppliers." That concerns batteries, automotive chips, and more. As Elon put it at one point, no matter how many more vehicle models the company was selling, it wouldn't be able to deliver more units this year — the constraint is supplies, not demand." writes Zach at Clean Technica: "With that in mind, and due to how many batteries and chips the Semi needs, it is being delayed until these supply chains ramp up, which is expected to be in 2023 at the moment. Similarly, the Tesla Cybertruck is delayed until the end of 2022 for all the same reasons. " Elon Musk said: "“I think most likely what we'll see is Cybertruck start production in the next year, and then reach volume production in 2023. And, hopefully, we can also be producing the Semi and the new Roadster in ‘23 as well. So, we should be through our severe supply chain shortages in ‘23. I'm optimistic that that will be the case.”" He also said the release date of the new Roadster is likely 2023. However, Tesla didn't release an adapter that connected to its proprietary charger to convert CCS charging stations to work with its vehicles." says SlashGear: "Tesla's proprietary charging connector is used for vehicles sold in North America and some other markets. With a different standard plug and the lack of a CCS adapter, some owners in North America were unable to use third-party charging networks based on the CCS standard. According to the email sent out to owners in South Korea, the CCS Combo 1 adapter can be used with the Model 3 and Model Y. It won't be usable for owners of the Model S and Model X. The adapter will be made available to owners with preferential purchase tickets on October 19." The most important of which is Google Maps, as it has recently replaced the Android Auto app with its new Driving Mode." writes T3: "The most recent Google Map update is aimed specifically at Android Automotive users and is designed to support thermal battery management for electric vehicles. It works by using information related to the location of the vehicle, the location of the charging station, and the time left until you reach the charge point. The California-based company has electrified everything from a Volkswagen Beetle to a Microbus, but is perhaps best known for its Tesla-powered Porsche 912. Jay Leno took one for a spin in the latest episode of Jay Leno's Garage, and to say he was impressed with the electric conversion is an understatement." say CarBuzz: "Fortunately, the electric motor and battery haven't ruined the original car's agile handling. Weighing just 2,505 pounds, the electric Porsche 912 is only 130 pounds heavier than the stock version. In fact, it's even more enjoyable to drive since it has better weight distribution and upgraded suspension. For the electric conversion, Zelectric has added a 32-kWh battery and an electric motor from a Tesla Model S rated at 536 hp. On a full charge, the Tesla-powered Porsche will last around 120-145 miles depending on how conservatively you drive." Apologies, 10.2 release will be a week from Friday" "Tesla will hold off on rolling out a beta version of its so-called “Full Self-Driving” system to more customers by a week to align with a delayed software update, Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk said. The carmaker will expand access to what it refers to as “FSD beta” when it releases version 10.2 of the software, Musk wrote Friday on Twitter. He announced earlier in the week that this will take place on October 8." writes driving.ca: "A week ago, Tesla released a button to customers allowing them to request to participate in the beta-testing program. They must agree to let the company assess their driving behavior for seven days and acknowledge they're responsible for remaining alert and keeping their hands on the wheel." https://driving.ca/auto-news/technology-news/tesla-delaying-wider-release-of-fsd-beta-by-one-week-musk-says NEW ENERGY DENSITY RECORD FOR A LFP BATTERY "According to the some recent MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) documents, a pure electric dump truck from the XCMG Group now holds the record for having the most energy dense LFP (LiFePO4) battery." write PushEVs: "The XCMG Group is the leading Chinese construction machinery manufacturer and one of the world's largest. an energy density of 176,1 Wh/kg is impressive for a LFP battery pack. In the coming months we might see this kind of energy density also in LFP batteries for electric passenger cars." Most of the Model 3s and Ys in the Earth Rides fleet were purchased new. Ys are purchased with the optional third-row seat to accommodate larger ride parties." reports Motor Trend: "The fleet also includes Audi E-Tron, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and Polestar 2 models, and other higher-end models will join the fleet (but probably no Nissan Leafs or Chevy Bolts). The local charging infrastructure affects purchases—Nashville is well served by Tesla Superchargers; Austin is less so. Hence there are more non-Teslas in the Texas fleet. In addition to driver training, new employees are schooled to be conversant in the technology of the cars they're driving, so they can answer all the frequently asked questions riders might have. And Earth Rides has worked out some sweetheart lease deals with Polestar to both expose the public to the nascent brand and to accumulate mileage more quickly than retail customers would and thereby provide fast-tracked used-vehicle stocK" Read more: https://www.motortrend.com/news/earth-rideshare-app-evs/ AUSTIN TEXAS ORDERS 26 PROTERRA E-BUSES Proterra has announced that Capital Metro in Austin, Texas is purchasing 26 40-foot Proterra ZX5 Max electric transit buses, with an option for another 126 of these buses plus chargers over the next 5 years. The first 26 electric buses should be delivered in 2022." says electrive: "In the announcement about the new electric bus purchase, it is said that Capital Metro aims to transition its entire fleet of more than 400 transit vehicles with zero-emission vehicles. According to its website, the Austin public transport provider currently has a fleet of 368 MetroBuses, which are presumably fossil-fuelled, since they list their 12 electric buses separately. Crucially, Arafura plans to process ores close to its site, ensuring direct oversight of the treatment of toxic waste products at the project it bought in 2001. China, which controls two-thirds of mining and 85% of refining of rare earths, according to BloombergNEF, is expected to put much of its production to use domestically in future." https://www.autoblog.com/2021/09/26/rare-earth-metal-alternatives/ WORLD RX ANNOUNCES 14-CAR GRID FOR FIRST FULLY ELECTRIC SEASON https://www.motorsport.com/world-rx/news/world-rallycross-14-electric-cars-2022/6678742/ NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM If you have gone back to fossil cars, or play along, imagine you HAD decided to switch back from EV to combustion, what's the reason? NEW 2021 KIA EV6 BOASTS UP TO 328 MILES OF RANGE - Kia has confirmed more specifications for its new EV6 electric crossover, with the bespoke electric car to offer a maximum of up to 328 miles of range from a full charge. Kia EV6 prices start from £40,895, with first deliveries expected to arrive in October, while the range will consist of three trim levels of two drivetrains. Every UK model also comes as standard with the company's long-range 77.4kWh battery, rather than the entry-level 58kWh unit offered in other markets. - Thanks to the new E-GMP underpinnings, which features the latest 800-volt electrical architecture, the EV6 can charge from 10 to 80 per cent in just 18 minutes, while maximum DC rapid charging capability stands at 239kW. As a world first, the EV6 also has the capability to transform a power feed from a more common 400-volt rapid charger to 800 volts thanks to a clever motor and inverter set-up, allowing the EV6 to charge at its maximum capacity. - To help boost range the EV6 features six different regenerative braking settings. This includes completely off, modes 1 to 3, ‘i-Pedal' – which allows maximum energy harvesting and brings the car to a stop without touching the brakes, allowing one-pedal driving – and an auto setting. - The Kia EV6's wheelbase is 2,900mm long despite the EV6's relatively compact dimensions, pushing the wheels close to the model's extremities to maximise space inside. - Boot space stands at 520 litres, rising to 1,300 litres with the rear seats folded down. There are also an additional 52 litres of storage space at the front in rear-drive models - Kia claims that with more than 35 percent charge left in the battery, the EV6 can also tow loads weighing up to 1,600kg, which is strong for an electric car. Meanwhile, other carmakers have formed alliances or invested in startups for networks as they rush new electric vehicle entrants to market. - "We're making our Supercharger network open to other EVs later this year," - Germany's transport minister said last month he was trying to convince Tesla to open its charging network to other carmakers to make it easier for drivers of electric vehicles to charge. - President Joe Biden's administration late last month embraced a bipartisan Senate deal to spend $1.2 trillion on infrastructure projects, including $7.5 billion on electric vehicle infrastructure, including charging stations. Details are still slim. For instance, it's unclear where it would initially open up, which automakers have reached agreements with Tesla and whether Tesla owners would get priority. However, Musk did finally attach a timeline of sorts by noting this would kick off before the end of 2021. - Way back in 2014, Musk said he'd be willing to open up the designs in order to build a standard that can be used interchangeably across the industry. - Tesla has its own connector, which means automakers would have to provide or sell an adapter to owners of its EVs to access the Supercharger network. It's a different story in Europe. Tesla uses the CCS direct current connector in Europe, making this the most likely region for Tesla to open up first. The Model Y – which is currently produced in the United States and China – will be sourced from the company's Shanghai plant for the Hong Kong market, where it went on sale earlier in July ahead of planned deliveries in September. With the heavily-related Model 3 now manufactured in China for the Australian market, it is likely versions of the electric SUV destined for Australia will also be sourced from China. The hardware HW 3.0 update will now cost $1,000 rather than $1,500, a 33 percent drop in price. To get the feature, owners will have to pay a monthly subscription fee of up to $199 on top of that, or $10,000 all in one shot. - Tesla famously said in 2016 that all its EVs produced going forward would have full self-driving hardware Original Source : https://www.engadget.com/tesla-reduces-the-price-of-its-full-self-driving-computer-upgrade-by-500-091157676.html STELLANTIS HAS 5 YEARS TO ABSORB 40% EV COST HIKE - The maker of Jeep and Ram has five years to absorb the roughly 40% increase in costs that electrified vehicles represent before Stellantis NV could face restructuring and job cuts, CEO Carlos Tavares said Wednesday. - It requires billions of dollars in capital investment and new talent: Stellantis said earlier this month it will spend about $35.5 billion by 2025 on electrification. - Tavares didn't provide a figure for where the automaker stands on achieving the $5.9 billion in annual cost savings it projected from the merger. He, however, did say the company is ahead of its plans and could perhaps increase its expected cost savings in 2022. - In China, it also has signed a deal with an unnamed partner to manufacture vehicles. Stellantis on Tuesday also validated an investment for solid state batteries, which it says will come to market in 2026, with an unnamed supplier. Many "aluminum" unibodies include at least a few steel pieces, such as the door-sill and B-pillar. The problem with too large of a cast is that it forces the use of a single alloy for the entire piece, which is unlikely to be optimal for weight or material cost. https://electrek.co/2020/07/10/elon-musk-tesla-german-built-model-y-is-revolution-auto-body-engineering/ TESLA APPEARS POISED TO ELECTRIFY S&P 500 "Tesla Inc appears on the verge of joining the S&P 500, a major accomplishment for Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk that would unleash a flood of new demand for the electric car maker’s shares, which have already surged 500% over the past year." reports Reuters: "Higher-than-expected second-quarter vehicle deliveries, announced last week, have analysts increasingly confident the company will show a profit in its quarterly report on July 22. Show #772 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 8th May 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. TESLA IS TOLD BY CALIFORNIA COUNTY ITS FACTORY CAN’T REOPEN YET" "Tesla Inc. was told by the California county that’s home to its lone U.S. auto-assembly plant that it can’t reopen the facility, hours after Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk made plans to do so." wrote Bloomberg Green today: "The county said in an emailed statement that it informed the company it didn’t meet criteria to reopen. Tesla aimed to restart the factory Friday afternoon, Musk told staff in an email seen by Bloomberg News. The CEO cited California Governor Gavin Newsom’s announcement earlier that he would let manufacturers in parts of the state resume operations starting Friday. What Musk didn’t mention in his memo was that Newsom also had said local authorities could remain more restrictive than the state. Another reason it’s unclear whether Tesla will be able to produce vehicles -- even if Alameda allows the company to reopen in Fremont -- is that its suppliers in other states aren’t able to operate yet." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-05-08/tesla-aims-to-restart-fremont-plant-as-soon-as-friday-musk-says?sref=W369vOBR TESLA PATENTS A NEW BATTERY CELL THAT ELON MUSK HYPES AS ‘WAY MORE IMPORTANT THAN IT SOUNDS’ "Tesla has patented a new battery cell with a tabless electrode that Elon Musk hypes as “way more important than it sounds.”" reports electrek: "Current cells use a jelly-roll design in which the cathode, anode, and separators are rolled together and have a cathode tab and an anode tab to connect to the positive and negative terminals of the cell can. The new patent called “Cell with a Tabless Electrode” describes a new way to build cells in order to avoid this issue. For this particular new tabless electrode, CEO Elon Musk said on Twitter that this technology is “way more important than it sounds” without explaining more. More is expected to be announced at Tesla’s battery day in a few weeks." In the comments, morrisg had this to say and whilst i've read it a couple of times, i don't think i fully get it yet: "Wow, this has the capability of greatly reducing the internal cell resistance for the current paths into and out of the jelly roll. By providing a continuous path from the local anode or cathode active material across the width to the minus or plus electrode on the can, it eliminates lots of current conduction in the anode or cathode backing foil in the longitudinal direction of the jelly roll. That means you can also reduce the thickness of the foil backing as it isn't necessary to reduce the internal cell resistance along the major current path anymore. So, cheaper cells due to no tabs needed; cheaper due to thinner backing copper and aluminum foils; and better performance due to decreased internal cell resistance. Oh, and less internal heat generation too. So simple, so good. I expect this will be licensed to anyone adopting a cylindrical cell for high power applications like transportation or electrical grid storage." https://electrek.co/2020/05/07/tesla-patents-battery-cell-elon-musk-hypes-way-more-important-than-it-sounds/ TESLA MODEL Y VIDEO REVIEW BY KELLEY BLUE BOOK "As for quality issues. Our car’s b-pillar trim doesn’t fit right and neither does this lower bumper trim, the rear door alignment is slightly off, the rear seats are similarly uneven, and there’s a loud rattle coming from the rear somewhere. Among the 3 braking modes, I love Hold. You can accelerate and decelerate using just the accelerator in most situations and the Model Y comes to a perfect, buttery smooth stop every time. If you want a pragmatic electric vehicle, the Chevy Bolt, Hyundai Kona EV, and Nissan Leaf can all be had for much less, but the Model Y’s premium touches and technical strengths put it in another class. Prices for the limited ‘La Prima’ edition come in below the 30k threshold after government subsidies." according to electrive: "Fiat has now released UK pricing where the electric 500e will start from £29,500 after the £3,000 plug-in car grant (PiCG) is applied. That’s for the first 500 high-spec ‘La Prima’ first-edition models, with less expensive models to follow. Buyers can expect deliveries in late 2020 or early 2021, according to Fiat. Fiat says the La Prima edition is £1,400 cheaper than the highest-spec Mini Electric and offers a more extended range of 199 miles from a 42 kWh battery. Also compare it to the Honda e: The 100 kW version starts in the UK at £26,160, the 113 kW version at £28,660 after subsidies but offers no more than 220 km of range." https://www.electrive.com/2020/05/08/fiat-releases-first-500e-small-electric-car-edition-in-uk/ NISSAN PROBABLY HITS 500,000 EVS "Nissan is silent about it, but it seems that the company already sold about 500,000 all-electric cars globally. We knew that it was coming, as the LEAF was at about 450,000 several months ago and in one of the latest press releases (May 5, 2020), Nissan announced that the cumulative result is more than 470,000 LEAFs. We assume that 500,000 LEAFs should be reached within several months, by the end of 2020 - just in time to celebrate 10-years on the market since December 2010." says InsideEVs: "The second Nissan EV is the Nissan e-NV200, available in passenger and cargo versions in Europe and Japan. On May 7, Nissan announced that 42,000 were produced in Spain since 2014. Production and sales are not the same thing, but we guess that is enough to consider the level of 500,000 already crossed." https://insideevs.com/news/420665/nissan-ev-sales-500000/ VOLKSWAGEN INVESTS IN BATTERY OPERATIONS AT SALZGITTER The joint venture between Volkswagen Group and the Swedish battery producer Northvolt AB is gaining further momentum. It has been decided that Volkswagen itself will erect the buildings and infrastructure for the joint venture’s “Northvolt Zwei” factory that is to produce lithium-ion battery cells, in order to leverage synergies at the Salzgitter site – based on the existing Center of Excellence for Battery Cells. Some €450 million is to be invested in this project. The joint venture will then rent the factory space. Battery cell production at the plant is scheduled to commence in early 2024 with an initial production capacity of 16 gigawatt hours. In September 2019, Volkswagen and Northvolt established a joint venture to prepare for the large-scale production of lithium-ion batteries in Germany. Volkswagen’s commitment to erect the buildings and infrastructure is the next key strategic decision. Construction work at the site is scheduled to commence before the end of this year. https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/2020/05/Volkswagen_invests_in_battery_operations_at_Salzgitter.html CHINA ANNOUNCES NATIONAL STANDARD FOR WIRELESS EV CHARGING BASED ON WITRICITY’S TECH WiTricity’s patented technology is foundational to the Chinese national standard (“GuoBiao” or GB standard) for wireless EV charging ratified and published by the China Electricity Council (CEC) on April 28, 2020 and announced on May 6, 2020. Standardization is critical to large-scale deployment of for EVs both in China and around the world, allowing any equipped EV to use any standard wireless charger. For the past four years, WiTricity has been actively involved in the Chinese wireless EV charging standardization process. Chinese automakers and their Tier 1 suppliers rely on the GB standard committee to define the wireless EV charging solution to be deployed in China. The ratified standard is now a major market enabler for deployment on vehicles and in public charging infrastructure. WiTricity has worked closely with the GB standard committee on several significant technical matters, including efforts to harmonize the China standard with other international standards. Welcome to new Patreon Partner BOB BOOTHBY Welcome to new Executive Producer HEDLEY WRIGHT Welcome to new Executive Producer JOHN C SOLAR Welcome to new Producer STEVEN C DAVIES Welcome to new Producer JAIE LAWRIE TESLA'S $2 BILLION SHARE SALE "Tesla Inc on Thursday announced plans to raise $2 billion in a stock offering, tapping into an astronomical jump in its share price over the past few months and reversing the electric-car maker’s often-stated policy of avoiding sales of new stock." reports Reuters.com: "Tesla said it would offer 2.65 million shares, of which Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk will buy up to $10 million in shares, while board member and Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison will purchase up to $1 million worth of Tesla shares. Musk has repeatedly assured investors that Tesla will not need to raise more money for costly initiatives including production of a new vehicle model, the ramp-up of its China production and the construction of its first European factory. Since the last capital raise, Tesla has built a $2 billion factory in Shanghai and unveiled the futuristic Cybertruck pickup." This is Elon 14 days ago: "So in light of that, it doesn’t make sense to raise money because we expect to generate cash despite this growth level. Diluting the company to pay down debt doesn’t sound like a wise move" Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives said: "“In our opinion the size of this offering is larger than many had anticipated, but we believe it’s a smart move by Musk and the Board to take advantage of being back in a position of strength" https://www.reuters.com/article/us-tesla-offering/tesla-seeks-to-tap-into-stock-surge-with-2-billion-share-sale-idUSKBN2071OY Yahooo Finance said: "Tesla doesn’t report sales by region or breakdown of revenue by country until regulatory filings that follow its earnings reports. On Thursday, the company said revenue rose 70% in China, 65% in the Netherlands and 48% in Norway last year. But in the U.S. -- by far its largest market -- revenue fell 15% to $12.65 billion. Tesla had 48,016 full-time employees at the end of 2019, down slightly from 48,817 from a year earlier." https://finance.yahoo.com/news/tesla-plots-2-billion-offering-130311465.html EDF HAS ACQUIRED POD POINT EDF have acquired a majority stake in Pod Point, as part of a newly-formed joint venture with Legal & General Capital. Pod Point said today: "The acquisition will help us achieve our vision of a world where travel doesn't damage the earth. By joining up with EDF we can accelerate our roll-out of charging infrastructure, making it even easier for UK drivers to go electric. Pod Point’s charging solutions will become part of EDF’s market-leading EV offers in the UK. Legal & General will take a c.23% stake in EDF’s newly-formed joint venture. Pod Point will be EDF Group’s biggest EV investment and the acquisition forms part of its plan to become the leading energy company for electric mobility in the UK, France, Italy and Belgium." https://pod-point.com/electric-car-news/edf-acquire-pod-point?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=edf Wesbite The Energyst said: "While parts of the power industry, including National Grid, believe UK infrastructure can handle an EV boom without a significant increase in generation capacity, EDF’s UK CEO Simone Rossi, offered a different view. “The additional electricity demand from EVs will require urgent investment in low carbon generation from renewables and nuclear,” he stated." https://theenergyst.com/edf-seals-pod-point-buy-says-ev-demand-will-need-new-nuclear/ 2020 STARTS WITH A BANG FOR ITALY’S EV MARKET "January sales are out for the Italian car market, and electric cars are up by nearly 600%(!) over the same month last year. 1943 fully electric vehicles (BEVs) were sold in the country, an epic surge over last year’s 283 units during the same period" says CleanTechnica: "Incentives in Italy didn’t kick in until March 2019, which all but paused the market during winter months.Further, with EU emissions regulations only now coming into force, many automakers waited for the new year before pushing existing and new electric models to customers. All this certainly explains such an exuberant start of the year, in an otherwise slowing car market. The biggest losers, predictably, were diesel models, which saw a sales drop of over 23% from the same month last year." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/02/11/2020-starts-with-a-bang-for-italys-ev-market-january-sales-up-587/ FORD MUSTANG MACH-E EUROPEAN DEBUT "Ford has launched its new Mustang Mach-E electric crossover in London as the spearhead of a drive to electrify its UK fleet and, it claims, save European motorists up to £28m a year in fuel costs." writes Autocar: "Under the banner “Go Electric”, the Mach-E is appearing on London’s roads near Marble Arch ahead of first UK customer deliveries late this year. Prices are not yet official, but it's estimated to cost from around £42,000, rising to £60,000. Deliveries are scheduled for the autumn. The model will initially be launched with two battery pack sizes and three power outputs. The twin-motor all-wheel-drive version is offered with a 75kWh battery and 254bhp, or 99kWh and 332bhp. Both versions provide 429lb ft and a sub-seven-second 0-62mph time, with estimated ranges of 260 and 335 miles." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/motor-shows-la-motor-show/new-ford-mustang-mach-e-ev-makes-european-debut-london "It’s a reflection of how far ahead Europe is of the U.S. in terms of adopting electric and electrified vehicles, due in part to strict rules limiting CO2 emissions. The automaker also announced it will have 18 electrified vehicles on the market in Europe by the end of 2021, up from 14 by the end of this year." reports Autoblog: "Ford did not address a report from CNET that said Norway will get priority in Europe for the Mustang Mach-E, saying only that it would be “available simultaneously in both the U.S. and key European markets late this year." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/02/13/ford-mustang-mach-e-european-launch/ PETROL AND DIESEL CAR SALES BAN COULD START IN 12 YEARS "The UK's planned ban on sales of new petrol, diesel or hybrid cars could start as early as 2032, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has said." reports BBC news: "Last week, the government sparked industry concern after bringing the date forward from 2040 to 2035 in a bid to hit zero-carbon emission targets. But Mr Shapps told BBC Radio 5 live it would happen by 2035, "or even 2032," adding there would be consultation. The SMMT car trade body had previously said the 2035 figure was "concerning"." TESLA SEEKS APPROVAL TO BUILD LONG-RANGE MODEL 3 IN CHINA "Tesla is seeking approval from Chinese regulators to offer a new China-made Model 3 variant, according to a government document." says Automotive News Europe: "Like the current China-made Model 3, which has a standard driving range of more than 400 kilometers (240 miles), it would be a rear-wheel drive vehicle, the source said, who was not authorized to talk about the matter and declined to be identified." InsideEVs said: "The MIIT document reveals a curb weight of 1,745 kg (slightly above the 1,726 in the discontinued U.S. counterpart), a 202 kW electric motor and a top speed of 225 km/h (140 mph)." https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/tesla-seeks-approval-build-long-range-model-3-china https://insideevs.com/news/398427/long-range-rwd-tesla-model-3-china/ DAIMLER STRUGGLES TO MEET EUROPEAN CO2 TARGETS WITH EV PRODUCTION IN QUESTION "Daimler CEO ola källenius this week said that meeting 2020 and 2021 stricter emission targets in Europe “will be a challenge.” That could mean big fines for Daimler." reports Electrek: "Källenius admitted that Daimler would have a difficult time meeting new emissions limits while speaking at the company’s annual results news conference in Stuttgart, Germany. That news follows a December report that Mercedes-Benz would delay deliveries of its EQC electric SUV in the United States. The company said it was a strategic decision to “support the growing customer demand for the EQC in Europe.” The move was also made to shift EV production to Europe, to help meet emission rules." https://electrek.co/2020/02/12/daimler-cant-meet-european-co2-targets-but-struggles-with-ev-production/ NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… I’m thinking of driving to Italy, 1028 miles and 17 hours. TESLA PERMIT APPLICATION HINTS AT NEW FREMONT ASSEMBLY LINE "Tesla Inc. has applied for a permit from the city home to its lone assembly plant that hints the electric-car maker could be planning another assembly line." says Bloomberg: "The application to the city of Fremont, California, describes the project it’s seeking a permit for as “GA5 demo and rough grading.” GA refers to general assembly, and Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk has previously said that Tesla has been running several lines to produce the Model 3, S and X. Space is tight at the factory, with workers already making some Model 3 sedans on an assembly line under a massive tent erected outside the facility." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-09-09/tesla-permit-application-hints-at-another-fremont-assembly-line THE HONDA E ELECTRIC CAR DEBUTS WITH OFFICIAL PRICING BEFORE SUMMER LAUNCH "Honda has released the first official images of its new honda e electric vehicle ahead of its summer launch. Unveiled for the first time during the Frankfurt Motor Show" according to the website DesignBoom: "Two 12.3-inch LCD touchscreens in the center form an infotainment display, while an 8.8-inch screen acts as the driver’s instrument cluster. it also comes equipped with a personal assistant that lets users control certain functions by saying ‘OK honda’. away from the car, honda e owners can use the my honda+ smartphone application, with features like charging point navigation, climate control and vehicle condition reports. the honda e’s 134-hp spec starts at £26,160 (approximately €29,470/$32,300), with the more powerful priced at £28,660 (about €32,180/$35,300). customers can make a reservation for priority ordering online in UK, germany, france and norway, or register their interest in other european markets on honda national websites. the honda e will start to ship later in summer 2020." https://www.designboom.com/technology/honda-e-electric-car-pricing-09-13-2019/ TESLA IS NOW INSTALLING FULL SELF DRIVING HARDWARE 3 UPGRADE "The first confirmed upgrade to Tesla’s new Full Self Driving hardware version 3 (HW3) took place today after a customer took his 2018 Tesla Model S P100DL into the Santa Barbara service center to get a new HEPA filter." says CleanTechnica "After the service, Twitterer and longtime Tesla supporter Sofiaan Fraval noticed that a line on his service documents indicated that the new hardware had been installed at the appointment as well. Sofiaan went on to clarify that the HW3 upgrade was currently only being offered to Model S and X owners, but just the fact that the upgrades have started is sure to get anyone who purchased the FSD suite excited. The new HW3 cannot yet be requested by customers for installation, as it is only being installed by eligible vehicles that come in for other service at service centers that have the new hardware and have been trained to install it. Even if you think your vehicle qualifies, you may not get the new HW3 installed at a service appointment. The arrival of HW3 currently only impacts Tesla owners running HW2 who have purchased the FSD software stack." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/09/11/tesla-installs-first-customer-upgrade-to-full-self-driving-hardware-3/ HIGHLY MODIFIED TESLA MODEL S P100D+ SPOTTED TESTING NEAR NURBURGRING First up from Road & Track: "To set a time, you need to rent the track privately. We're now hearing that Tesla has done just that. A source on the ground has informed R&T that a time could be set next week. Our source told us that the Nurburgring issued a schedule change for September 21st, with a 30 minute private window carved out of a session that already had public laps and Ring taxi laps on the calendar. There is also the possibility of lap timing in a session on the 18th, though it doesn't sound like that session would be private. Carving out that time, from a session that was previously booked and was guaranteed to make the track money, is an expensive proposition." And from InsideEVs: "According to our spy photographers: "...we’ve spied Tesla at a private test facility not far from the Nürburgring prepping a Model S for a run at the lap record. The Model S Tesla is prepping for the record attempt does not appear to be stock. We can see wider fender flares, aggressive wheels and tires, and a trunk lip spoiler. From what we heard the tires where Michelin Cup 2 R for that extra grip and we also spotted a roll cage inside the car." Additionally, it seems the lower grille opening is bigger to enhance cooling. And if you zoom in on shots of the rear badging, it seems to display P100D+." In the comments from eric W: "Pictures 7 and 12 show back of car and it looks to me like it has "P100D+" on it. The +Plus is what they used for the original P85 to P85+ to add track enhanced features, so done in past. Like the article says, new Model S P100D+ added to ordering studio makes it all legit. If it beats Taycan, how much could they charge for it? They have +$140K to work with and still come in under Taycan Price?" https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a28999141/tesla-could-set-a-nurburgring-lap-time-on-september-21st/ https://insideevs.com/news/370314/tesla-model-s-spy-nurburgring/ TESLA MODEL S BREAKS LAGUNA SECA LAP RECORDS "Following the recent launch of the Porsche Taycan, Musk appears to be on a mission to show that Tesla’s vehicles are still the highest-performance EVs available today." writes Electrek: "While they couldn’t get things done in Germany, Tesla tried for its own record at home at the Laguna Seca racetrack. Musk said that they broke the fastest lap record for 4-door vehicles. Laguna Seca has become somewhat of a proving ground for electric vehicles in recent years. Last year, the record for the fastest production EV lap has changed hands several times." https://electrek.co/2019/09/11/tesla-model-s-breaks-laguna-seca-lap-records-elon-musk/ SEAT MII ELECTRIC IS THE CHEAPEST VW TRIPLET "Today at Frankfurt Motor Show 2019, SEAT announced the price of the Mii Electric in Germany, making it the cheapest VW triplet." according to Push EVs: "Anyway, the VW triplets are the first electric cars with decent range (260 km in WLTP) that we can really call affordable. The brand’s first electric model can be purchased starting at €145 per month with no down payment with a 36-month leasing formula in Germany or outright for €16,300 (including government and brand subsidies)." SEAT Mii Electric Germany: 20.650 euros (before subsidies) and 16.300 euros (after subsidies) ŠKODA CITIGOe iV Germany: 20.950 euros (before subsidies) and 16.570 euros (after subsidies) Volkswagen e-up Germany: 21.975 euros (before subsidies) and 17.595 euros (after subsidies) These are all the same car, so checking out the specs from the VW e-UP: "The updated e-Up! is not likely to receive any major styling changes – the main difference being its underpinnings. Thanks to a larger 32.3kWh battery (up from 18.7kWh), the e-Up! is now able to travel 161 miles on a full charge – a sharp rise over the last car’s 99-mile range. It’s also able to charge at a 40kW rate, meaning that by using a rapid charger its batteries will be able to be topped up to 80 per cent from near-flat in an hour. The 82bhp electric motor remains the same – enabling a 0-60mph time of 11.7 seconds and a top speed of 81mph." https://pushevs.com/2019/09/10/seat-mii-electric-is-the-cheapest-vw-triplet/ https://www.carkeys.co.uk/news/updated-volkswagen-e-up-ev-set-to-debut-at-frankfurt-motor-show TESLA DOUBLES SUPERCHARGING REFERRAL BONUS TO 2,000 FREE MILES IN Q3 SALES PUSH "Tesla’s referral program has been an effective tool for the company to promote car sales. By using a referral code or link to order your new Tesla, both you (the buyer) and the referring owner get free Supercharging. Until today, that bonus was 1,000 miles of free Supercharging for buyer and referrer. But Tesla just announced that it is doubling that bonus to 2,000 free Supercharging miles for any Tesla car ordered on or after September 10, 2019 and delivered before October 1, 2019." reports CleanTechnica: "Unlike previous referral bonuses which only required that the car be ordered by the deadline, this time, Tesla is requiring that the car be delivered by the deadline. So those who want to take advantage of this offer may need to select an available “inventory” model from their local Tesla showroom. Though, Tesla has tightened up its delivery rates lately, so it is possible that you could custom order a Tesla today and have it delivered with your exact specifications by the October 1 deadline." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/09/10/tesla-doubles-supercharging-referral-bonus-to-2000-free-miles-in-q3-sales-push/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week. The company’s previous best for quarterly deliveries was 90,700 vehicles in the last three months of 2018." Elon Musk: "There is a lot of speculation regarding our vehicle deliveries this quarter, he reality is that we are on track to set an all-time record, but it will be very close. However, if we go all out, we can definitely do it! We already have enough vehicle orders to set a record, but the right cars are not yet all in the right locations. Logistics and final delivery are extremely important, as well as finding demand for vehicle variants that are available locally, but can’t reach people who ordered that variant before the end of the quarter.” Sources say there are 12,000 undelivered orders. I've also seen on Reddit someone saying they were called by a Tesla rep to take a different spec than the Model 3 they'd ordered. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-06-26/tesla-has-enough-orders-to-set-delivery-record-elon-musk-says HYUNDAI MOTOR TO BUILD A PURE ELECTRIC SUV PROTOTYPE THIS OCTOBER "Hyundai Motor has begun to produce a prototype of its first compact sports utility vehicle (SUV) on the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), a platform being built exclusively for electric vehicles." reports Korea Times. Remember the Kona is an ICE platform: "Hyundai Motor has requested several auto parts companies to supply parts necessary for a prototype of its first electric car model NE (project name), sources in the automobile industry said on June 23. Hyundai plans to complete the prototype by December. The prototype is a pre-production test vehicle before mass production. Carmakers usually make 50 to 200 prototypes prior to beginning mass production of a model. " http://www.businesskorea.co.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=33210 THERE ARE 25,000+ CHADEMO CHARGERS GLOBALLY. 9,000+ IN EUROPE "CHAdeMO Association recently reported that the total number of CHAdeMO chargers around the world increased to 25,300 (up roughly 40% year-over-year)." according to InsideEVs: "The single biggest market for CHAdeMO is Europe, where CHAdeMO is often installed in parallel with CCS Combo 2 in multi-head chargers. As of April 2019, there was 9,200 CHAdeMO in Europe (up by close to 50% or 3,000 from year earlier). The progress in Japan, where CHAdeMO was developed, is much slower and number of chargers stands at 7,600. North America lived to see 3,200 CHAdeMO chargers, which is close to 40% more than a year ago, however, it's hard to say how Nissan/Mitsubishi will cope, being the only major forces behind CHAdeMO now." https://insideevs.com/news/356385/25000-chademo-chargers-globally-9000-europe/ HYUNDAI KONA SMOKES FRONT TYRES "Performance Drive demonstrated how the Kona Electric can smoke its front tires with ease, and by the same token, the subcompact crossover can accelerate to 60 km/h in 3.53 seconds. From zero to 100, the traction control helps the Hyundai hit that velocity in 6.86 seconds." writes AutoEvolution: "in the United States, the Kona Electric comes standard with the larger of the two options, translating to 258 miles according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The SEL trim level retails at $36,950 while the Limited and Ultimate soar to $41,400 and $44,900 excluding destination. This being the U.S., the federal government offers a plug-in grant of up to $7,500, bringing the price down to $29,450 after the tax credit." https://www.autoevolution.com/news/heres-the-hyundai-kona-electric-burning-rubber-during-acceleration-test-135410.html# BYD ADDS BUS MANUFACTURING CAPACITY IN NORTH AMERICA WITH NEW CANADIAN PLANT "BYD is taking another step into the lucrative North American bus market with the announcement of a new bus plant in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. The new 45,000-square-foot facility represents another step forward into the electrified future of North America." reports Clean Technica "BYD’s new plant in Newmarket, Ontario and gives BYD additional bus production capacity close to the high-density east coast of the US in addition to opening up new partnerships in Canada. The new plant already has its first marching orders, with an order for 10 fully electric BYD buses for the largest transit operator in Canada, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC). The TTC also has an option to add another 30 BYD buses beyond the initial order." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/06/25/byd-adds-bus-manufacturing-capacity-in-north-america-with-new-canada-plant/ SIEMENS SELLS ELECTRIC AIRCRAFT PROPULSION BUSINESS TO ROLLS-ROYCE "Siemens is set to sell its eAircraft unit to Rolls-Royce – the companies expect the move to take place in late 2019." says ChargedEVs: "Siemens eAircraft develops electric and hybrid-electric propulsion systems for the aerospace industry. At locations in Munich and Erlangen in Germany as well as Budapest, Hungary, it cooperates with partners such as Airbus to create prototypes for propulsion systems like Airbus’s CityAirbus" https://chargedevs.com/newswire/siemens-sells-electric-aircraft-propulsion-business-to-rolls-royce/ SPARK PARTNERS WITH BP TO PROVE PIONEERING UK ELECTRIC VEHICLE TECHNOLOGY "Spark EV Technology today announced a successful collaboration with BP that provided real-world trials which validated its advanced range prediction system for electric vehicles (EVs)." in a story from Automotive NEws last week: "EVs today are poor at estimating how far their battery will take them, and in real world tests can significantly underestimate or overestimate the energy needed for a journey. Urban driving can be 2 or 3 times as efficient as motorway driving, and yet the vehicle uses the most recent driving efficiency as a guide to the remaining range. This means vehicles can significantly over or underestimate range when cars changes from urban to motorway driving, or vice-versa. During Spark’s trial with BP it was observed that one car could have driven 45 miles more than its displayed range, and on another journey an extra 21 miles more range had to be used to complete the journey than the car predicted. In comparison, Spark intelligent range prediction uses data on where the car is going, not where it has been, and for the same journeys predicted the range to an accuracy of just 3.8 miles and 0.4 miles respectively. " https://www.automotiveworld.com/news-releases/spark-partners-with-bp-to-prove-pioneering-uk-electric-vehicle-technology HOW DID THE TESLA MODEL 3 BECOME THE WORLD'S SAFEST CAR? "As most Tesla fans already know, Tesla’s vehicles are just about the safest on the road. Model 3 is the safest car ever tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which judged Tesla’s newest car to have the lowest probability of injury in a collision of any of the over 900 cars it has tested. In second place is Model S, and in third - you guessed it - Model X." writes EVANNEX for InsideEVs: " Tesla’s vehicles have glass roofs, which you might think are less safe than the metal kind, but in fact the opposite is the case. The roof panels on the Model 3 are made like a windshield - two layers of hardened glass laminated with thermoplastic - and are much stiffer than any thin sheet-metal roof. Thanks to Tesla’s connectivity features, the company has detailed data on all accidents that happen to its cars. Teslas on Autopilot average one accident per 2.7 million miles driven, whereas the average for all passenger vehicles in the US is one accident for every 436,000 miles." https://insideevs.com/news/356489/tesla-model-3-safety/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. FREMONT FACTORY BEING PREPPED FOR TESLA MODEL Y PRODUCTION, MODEL S REFRESH "Tesla is expected to produce the new Model Y at the Fremont factory according to a CNBC report" says CNBC: "Tesla officially hasn't announced where it will produce the Model Y. The automaker says it's considering both the Tesla Factory in California and Gigafactory in Nevada. Because Model Y shares a lot of parts with the Model 3, Fremont could be a wise choice, although the factory is getting cramped. Unofficial sources say that Tesla "has barely begun to place orders for new equipment to manufacture the Model Y. In 2019, Tesla would like to deliver at least 360,000 cars, compared to around 245,000 in 2018." https://insideevs.com/news/352061/fremont-tesla-model-y-production-model-s-refresh/ TESLA HAS CATCHING UP TO DO "Tesla Inc has “a lot of catching up” to do in order to achieve a record quarter, news website Electrek reported on Wednesday, citing Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk’s leaked email to employees." says REuters: "“While our demand is strong, we have a lot of vehicle deliveries to catch up to in order to have a successful quarter,” Musk wrote in the mail. “We also need to address the total cost of getting a car from our factory to the customer. Last quarter, there were many expedites fees and routing inefficiencies that led to higher than expected delivery costs. This makes it much harder for to* break even. “Per my earlier email, if we execute well, Q2 will be an all-time record for Tesla vehicle deliveries and an awesome victory!!” https://electrek.co/2019/05/29/tesla-demand-deliveries-catch-up-record-quarter-elon-musk-leaked-email/ EV CHARGING SITES OUTNUMBER PETROL STATIONS FOR FIRST TIME "New figures from Zap-Map reveal the extent of the UK’s electric vehicle revolution, with the number of public charging locations now surpassing petrol stations for the first time. Data from Zap-Map shows that as of 22 May, there are 8,471 charging locations across the UK, hosting a total of 13,613 charging devices. In contrast, as of the end of April, there are currently only 8,400 petrol stations in the UK, a figure which is continuing to decline. There has been huge growth in the UK public EV charge point market in the past 12 months, with the number of locations increasing 57% in that time. https://www.zap-map.com/ev-charging-sites-outnumber-petrol-stations-for-first-time/ CHINA-MADE TESLA MODEL 3 PRICE ANNOUNCEMENT EXPECTED ON FRIDAY "Bloomberg reports that Tesla is expected to announce prices of the China-made base Tesla Model 3 on Friday, May 31." reports InsideEVs: "The base Model 3 will be produced at the Tesla Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, which allows it to avoid the 15% import tax and catch onto Chinese subsidies for New Energy Vehicles. Currently, the cheapest Model 3 in China starts at 377,000 yuan (≈$54,542). Bloomberg says that the new price could be 300,000-350,000 yuan (≈$43,400-50,634) before subsidies. The pricing announcement could be related to the surprise scheduled for May 31, but as everyone knows the Model 3 produced locally will be cheaper than imported, it's hard to say what the surprise really will be." https://insideevs.com/news/351910/china-made-tesla-model-3-price/ GM PLANS OWN LARGE EV CHARGING NETWORK "GM confirmed today that it plans to its own large electric car charging network with thousands of fast-charging stations in the US, but the automaker apparently can’t be bothered to invest in it itself." writes Fred for Electrek: "The American automaker confirmed today that it is teaming up with Bechtel, the largest construction company in the US, “to build thousands of electric vehicle fast-charging stations” across the United States as part of a new charging network." CNN reports: "The American automaker confirmed today that it is teaming up with Bechtel, the largest construction company in the US, “to build thousands of electric vehicle fast-charging stations” across the United States as part of a new charging network. Neither company plans to put money into this project, though. The two companies will create a separate corporation to build the charging network and other companies are being invited to invest in it. Neither GM nor Bechtel would name potential investors while discussions are still ongoing.”" https://electrek.co/2019/05/28/gm-ev-charging-network/ ROLEC, EV.ENERGY UNVEIL NEW SMART CHARGER AND MOBILE APP UK: "Rolec EV is launching a new range of smart home EV chargers that allow drivers to manage charging through an app. The EV HomeSmart chargers will be integrated with the EV.Energy cloud-based backend, and are eligible under Office for Low Emission Vehicles' (OLEV) grant scheme." reports Current NEws: "Drivers will be able to programme the charger to charge at specific times, with the EV.Energy app also integrating with a homeowner's electricity provider to charge at the cheapest rate. Charging history will be available to see through the app, including live charging status, electricity used in kWh, energy costs and carbon savings. The chargers are enabled at speeds of 3.6kW or 7.2kW and are being launched as part of the WallPod EV charging portfolio. It’s the second addition to the portfolio announced this month, with a range of solar powered chargers also being launched." https://www.current-news.co.uk/news/rolec-ev-energy-unveil-new-smart-charger-and-mobile-app TESLA MODEL 3 GETS CERTIFIED IN AUSTRALIA, ORDERS SHOULD OPEN SOON CleanTEchnica says: "On Friday, Tesla received notification from the Australian Government that the company’s application to sell Model 3’s in Australia was approved. From looking at the application, Tesla only applied for the 1726 kg and 1856 kg weights, which correspond to the Long Range Rear Wheel Drive, Long Range All Wheel Drive, and Performance All Wheel Drive models, so the Standard Range and Standard Range Plus won’t be coming to Australia right yet — probably in a few months after they work through the backlog of orders for the higher-end models." USED EV PRICES INCREASE IN UK "Prices of second-hand electric and hybrid vehicles are soaring as demand outstrips supply" says InsideEVs: "electric vehicles - also known as EVs - are rocketing in value, with prices growing 11 percent. In contrast, the average price growth rate for all vehicles has slowed to 1.5 percent - the lowest rate for almost two years." KIA RELEASES REVISED NIRO HYBRID MODELS IN EUROPE "Kia has now started selling the revised versions of the Niro Hybrid and the Niro Plug-in Hybrid that they presented at the Geneva Motor Show." reports electrive.com: "The 2020 models of the two hybrid models can be ordered in the UK from 1 July, where prices start at £24,590 for the Niro Hybrid and £31,945 for the Niro Plug-in Hybrid. The cosmetic changes to Kia’s hybrid models include a revamping of the interior and exterior designs so that the hybrids look more like the fully-electric e-Niro. In Germany, prices start at 26,990 Euro (Niro Hybrid) or 33,990 Euro (Niro Plug-in Hybrid) and will be available from dealers at the end of July." Not everyone can replicate the success of Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA), but NIO Inc (NYSE:NIO) just might pull it off in the Chinese market. This Chinese electric car company debuted on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) two months ago and NIO stock has experienced quite a bit of volatility since its initial public offering (IPO). A report from Citron Research on November 19 only added fuel to the fire. For investors searching for an NIO stock forecast, here’s what you need to know. Founded in 2014, NIO Inc made its name by developing the “EP9” supercar. The two-seater ran the Nürburgring Nordschleife in just 6 minutes 45.9 seconds, setting a record for electric vehicles (EVs) on that track. The company then entered the premium electric vehicle market in China with the “ES8,” an all-electric, full-size SUV that can seat seven passengers. NIO plans to launch the “ES6,” its five-seater SUV, by the end of this year. The latest catalyst came on Monday, November 19, when Citron Research released a report saying that NIO stock will see little resistance on its way to $12.00 per share. (Source: “NIO short is a Tesla Déjà vu – Path to $12 Should Have Little Resistance,” Citron Research, November 19, 2018.) Given that NIO stock closed at $7.19 on Friday, Citron’s $12.00 price target was quite bold. And indeed, Citron’s bullish stance sparked a rally, as NIO stock shot up by as much as 12% on Monday morning. Shares of NIO Inc closed at $7.84 apiece on Monday, marking a gain of nine percent. One of the reasons why this release became a trigger event was that Citron Research’s Executive Editor Andrew Left was a well-known activist short seller. In particular, he wasn’t always a fan of the electric vehicle industry. In September, Left filed against Tesla, alleging that the company’s Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk “attempted to manipulate the price of Tesla securities with false and misleading tweets, in a directed effort to harm short-sellers.” (Source: “Short seller Andrew Left sues Tesla and Elon Musk, claiming stock manipulation,” CNBC, September 6, 2018.) Left turned bullish on Tesla in October. Now, he thinks NIO stock could be an even bigger opportunity. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/carterfarrpodcast/support
Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Friday 29th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. CAN #TEAMTESLA MAKE 5,000 MODEL 3'S PER WEEK "Wall Street analysts don’t think that Tesla will have reached its goal of manufacturing 5,000 Model 3s per week by the end of June, according to a Bloomberg survey of eight analysts. Since 2017, Tesla has already pushed back twice that coveted 5,000-a-week Model 3 production rate, with the latest deadline set for the end of June, tomorrow." according to an article by OilPrice.com in 29th June: "In early June, Elon Musk told the annual stockholders’ meeting that it was “quite likely” that Tesla could start building 5,000 Model 3s a week by the end of this month. Tesla is expected to report production and delivery figures before the July 4 holiday. Wall Street analysts and a Tesla Model 3 production tracker set up by Bloomberg don’t see it making the 5,000 number. As of June 28, Bloomberg Tracker’s Trend forecast for next week a Model 3 weekly production rate at around 4,500 vehicles." Tom Randall at Bloomberg looks back on Q2: "The factory was shut down at least twice for extensive upgrades, a new production line was hastily erected in a tent in the parking lot, and Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk moved from sleeping on the couch to sleeping under the desk. He was even seen personally torquing bolts on an assembly line, alongside a summer intern. Tesla may be suppressing U.S. sales as the quarter ends as way to extend its federal electric-vehicle tax credit of $7,500 per car. The subsidy begins to phase out one full quarter after the quarter in which Tesla sells its 200,000th electric car in the U.S. By hitting that milestone after July 1, rather than a day earlier, Tesla would gain an additional three months of tax credits that could be worth more than $400 million to Tesla customers" And Douglas A. Mcintyre at 247wallst.com: "Musk will need to make an unusually convincing argument that any number below 5,000 a week is acceptable. Many investors and much of the media already believe he is sort of a shady used car salesman and this will make it hard. A figure of 4,999 may be too low." Meanwhile, "Tesla is officially letting all of the Tesla Model 3 reservation holders place their actual order now. While the initial reservation required a $1,000 deposit, the next step requires that each person fork over another $2,500 to place the order for their Model 3." according to The Torque Report: "Once a reservation holder places their order, Tesla estimates that their specific Model 3 will arrive in about “2-4 months,” although that estimate could change based on how the options chosen for the Model 3." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-06-29/tesla-reaches-moment-of-truth-in-mad-dash-to-make-5-000-cars-per-week https://www.msn.com/en-gb/cars/news/what-if-tesla-makes-4999-cars-a-week/ar-AAznZKs?li=BBoPJKX KIA NIRO EV FOR USA AND MORE ON HYUNDAI KONA FOR UK Kia Motors USA has added the all new Kia Niro EV on the home page in a prominent position as the first thing you see. When clicking on it, you can submit your email to get updates. It says "Meet the all-electric crossover that has it all. The future has arrived and it’s fully electric. The all-new 2019 Kia Niro EV has debuted internationally, expanding upon the Niro model family of hybrid crossovers and is set to arrive in the US at the end of 2018.1 This highly-anticipated electric vehicle has an electric motor that provides an estimated 201 horsepower and 291 lb-ft. of torque. And thanks to a liquid cooled state-of-the-art battery, Kia is targeting up to a 240-mile range on a single charge.2 " Another one coming from Jr Chocco at Torque Report: "Kia’s next fully electric car, the 2019 Kia Niro EV hasn’t had its official US debut yet, but Kia has announced that it will arrive by the end of 2018. With its 240 mile driving range, the 2019 Niro EV will go head to head with the Chevy Bolt, but it the bigger issue for Kia is that it won’t be able to offer quite as many. The 2019 Kia Niro EV will only be offered in limited quantities when it arrives. According to Kia’s website, “Expected availability winter 2018 in select markets in limited quantities.” The issue here likely has to do with battery supplies. Hyundai has also had supply issues with the Hyundai Ionic Electric and its likely to get even worse with the addition of the Kona Electric as well." And on the other side of the Atlantic, in the UK we got pricing for the Hyundai KONA. A couple more details I didn’t have time for on Friday's show. The spec for the base model, £25,000 / £33,000 USD / 43,000 CAD...7 inch screen, digital radio, both Apple and Android sync, rear camera, parking sensors, climate control, keyless entry. I also missed the difference between the 39kWh Premium and 64kWh Premium which is £3,125 / $4,100 USD / $5,400 CAD. That's an extra 25kWh, at £125 per kWh. At that multiple, and i know this is crude, but £125 times 64 would put the total cost of the battery at £8,000 / $10,565 USD / $13,880 CAD. Again that's crude, and they're probably pricing it in a way to encourage the upgrade. The new Hyundai Kona Electric SUV will be available to order in the UK from 2 August online only. Some dealers have already been refunding deposits. https://www.kia.com/us/en/content/vehicles/upcoming-vehicles/2019-niro-ev http://eng.skinnovation.com/business/battery.asp PG&E, TESLA TEAM UP ON BIG BATTERIES "An array of Tesla Powerpacks — the industrial-size batteries helping power a Hawaiian island and part of Australia — may soon plug in to a Pacific Gas and Electric Co. substation in Moss Landing (Monterey County)" according to the SF Chronicle: "PG&E on Friday asked state regulators to approve four contracts for using big batteries to help support the electrical grid in several locations. The one in Moss Landing would be designed and built by Palo Alto’s Tesla, while PG&E would own and operate it. The Moss Landing project would have a capacity of 182.5 megawatts." https://www.sfchronicle.com/business/article/PG-E-Tesla-team-up-on-big-batteries-13038571.php BMW SIGNS BILLION DOLLAR BATTERY DEAL WITH CATL Last but not least, Mark Kane at InsideEVs has been reporting on the BMW Billion Dollar deal for batteries. "BMW has awarded Chinese battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL) a contract worth over a €1 billion ($1.16 billion). CATL is scouting potential locations for a battery production facility in Europe with the German state of Thuringia encouraging the Chinese manufacturer to use a site near Erfurt, in eastern Germany. CATL recently raised more than $850 million in its IPO and became an investor in BYTON. The plan for the future is to build a 24 GWh battery factory, to more or less double its current output."
