Full Text of ReadingsMonday of the Fifth Week of Lent Lectionary: 251The Saint of the day is Saint John Baptist de La SalleSaint John Baptist de La Salle's Story Complete dedication to what he saw as God's will for him dominated the life of John Baptist de La Salle. In 1950, Pope Pius XII named him patron of schoolteachers for his efforts in upgrading school instruction. As a young 17th-century Frenchman, John had everything going for him: scholarly bent, good looks, noble family background, money, refined upbringing. At the early age of 11, he received the tonsure and started preparation for the priesthood, to which he was ordained at 27. He seemed assured then of a life of dignified ease and a high position in the Church. But God had other plans for John, which were gradually revealed to him in the next several years. During a chance meeting with Monsieur Adrien Nyel, he became interested in the creation of schools for poor boys in Rheims, where he was stationed. Though the work was extremely distasteful to him at first, he became more involved in working with the deprived youths. Once convinced that this was his divinely appointed mission, John threw himself wholeheartedly into the work, left home and family, abandoned his position as canon at Rheims, gave away his fortune, and reduced himself to the level of the poor to whom he devoted his entire life. The remainder of his life was closely entwined with the community of religious men he founded, the Brothers of the Christian School (also called Christian Brothers or De La Salle Brothers). This community grew rapidly and was successful in educating boys of poor families, using methods designed by John. It prepared teachers in the first training college for teachers and also set up homes and schools for young delinquents of wealthy families. The motivating element in all these endeavors was the desire to become a good Christian. Yet even in his success, John did not escape experiencing many trials: heart-rending disappointment and defections among his disciples, bitter opposition from the secular schoolmasters who resented his new and fruitful methods, and persistent opposition from the Jansenists of his time, whose moral rigidity and pessimism about the human condition John resisted vehemently all his life. Afflicted with asthma and rheumatism in his last years, he died on Good Friday at age 68, and was canonized in 1900. Reflection Complete dedication to one's calling by God, whatever it may be, is a rare quality. Jesus asks us to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength” (Mark 12:30b, emphasis added). Paul gives similar advice: “Whatever you do, do from the heart…” (Colossians 3:23). Walking with the Saints l Feast of St. John Baptist of La Salle, Patron Saint of All teachers l April 7   Today we shall bring to you the story of the “Patron Saint of Teachers.” He was a French priest and the founder of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. This Institute run schools and is now very popular in the field of education in many countries. St. John Baptist De La Salle. He is referred to as De La Salle or La Salle, and his company is called the Christian Brothers or LaSallian. Our saint was born in Reims, France to a noble and wealthy family on April 30, 1651. His parents, being devout Catholics, offered him and his brothers to the service of God, so he was tonsured at the age of eleven, in a ceremony common during that time. When he was sixteen, he was named canon of the Reims Cathedral and the following year he received the minor Orders. He pursued higher studies and after completing his classical, literary and philosophical studies, he entered the Seminary of Saint-Sulpice on October 18, 1670. In 1672, he became a subdeacon and on April 9, 1678 at age 26, he was ordained a priest. Two years later, he received a doctorate in theology. De La Salle dedicated his life to the education of poor children in France. He first worked to help the teachers who lacked training, purpose, and leadership. In 1680, he invited a group of them to take their meals in his home, taught them good manners and inspired them in their work. Then, he invited them to live in his home, a move that disturbed and scandalized his relatives and friends. When his home was lost in a lawsuit, he rented a house and brought the teachers with him. He resigned his work in the parish and devoted his full attention to the training of teachers and establishing schools. Afterwards, he founded a religious institute, the Institute of the Brothers of Christian Schools, the first among religious groups consisting only of Brothers and no priests. This enterprise was opposed by many ecclesiastical authorities and even by educational establishments.  Nevertheless, he pursued his plan, with the purpose of educating the “children of artisans and the poor,” while teaching them about the Catholic faith. The Institute was soon recognized by the Church. In 1685, he founded in Reims, France the first normal school, a school whose goal is to train teachers. De La Salle took up the cause of educating the poor seriously. By the time of his death, the Christian Brothers have founded schools in 22 cities in France. He also contributed much to the entire field of education through his writings and new teaching methodology. The LaSallian tradition believed that all God's children, particularly the young, have an inherent dignity, being created in the image of God and education is the means of developing this dignity for the sake of the students and of society. They believe that “… not only is God so good as to have created us, but desires all of us to come to the knowledge of the truth.” This, in fact is the vision and achievement of John Baptist De La Salle. In 1719, due to vigorous labor, De La Salle got sick and died at Saint Yon, Rouen, France, three weeks before his 68th birthday. It was on a Good Friday. Pope Leo XIII canonized him on May 24, 1900. On May 15,1950, Pope Pius XII proclaimed him Patron Saint of All Teachers. His feast day is April 7, the day of his death. In 2021 the International LaSallian Mission Web site stated that the LaSallian Order consists of about 3,000 Brothers, who help in running over 1,100 education centers in 80 countries with more than a million students, together with 90,000 teachers and lay associates.  Virtue: piety, humility, courage, charity, perseverance, integrity, generosity and excellence  Prayer: Pray, St. John Baptist De La Salle, that today's youth may cherish the knowledge about God including virtues and moral discipline.”

Plus news, weather, sports, and more… ***** Prayer for the Intercession of Bl. James Miller O faithful Shepherd, Blessed Brother James Miller, FSC, as a Christian Brother and Lasallian missionary, you tilled the soil with your hands and invited Jesus Christ to till the soil of your soul. You became a sign of the love of Christ, the Good Shepherd for your students, and blessed their lives by your ministry. You stood firm and did not run from danger, bringing glory to God, His Church, your Lasallian family, and your martyrdom. Blessed Brother James, obtain from the heart of Jesus (make your request here), and pray for me, that I too may be a sign of Christ’s love. Teach me to faithfully till the soil of this life in this reality given to me by our Father, unafraid to stay with those God has given me, no matter the cost. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. ***** RECIPES FROM RITA Jane’s deluxe sugar cookies with sparkling sugar Ingredients:1 cup salted butter, softened (if using unsalted, add 1/4 teaspoon salt)1-1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar1 large egg1 teaspoon vanilla extract1/2 teaspoon almond extract2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour1 teaspoon baking soda1 teaspoon cream of tartarSparkling coarse sugar for sprinkling on top (optional) Instructions:Beat together butter, and salt if using, confectioners’ sugar, egg, vanilla and almond extracts until mixture is fluffy.Whisk together flour, baking soda and cream of tartar.Slowly blend in flour mixture with butter mixture. Dough will be very soft and must be chilled before baking.Roll dough out 1/4” thick between plastic wrap or parchment paper (sprinkle wrap with a bit of flour to prevent sticking) and chill in refrigerator from an hour to a day or 2.Preheat oven to 350.Remove dough from wrap and lay on lightly floured surface. Sprinkle top of dough very lightly with flour.Cut cookies out with favorite cutter. Reroll as necessary.Place an inch apart on ungreased or parchment lined cookie sheets. If you like, sprinkle with coarse or sanding sugar. If you’re going to frost them after they cool, don’t sprinkle with sugar.Bake 7-9 minutes or so until edges barely start to turn golden. The longer they bake the crisper they become after cooling.Yield depends. I got a good dozen and one half from a medium heart cookie cutter. Simple glazeWhisk together 2 cups confectioners’ sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla and 3-4 tablespoons of water. Buttercream frostingBeat together 1 cup softened butter with 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla.Add 4 cups confectioners’ sugar gradually, beating as you go to mix well.Add up to 1/4 cup heavy cream, again beating as you go and continue to beat until light and fluffy. ***** Brady Stiller, author of Your Life is a Story Full list of guestsSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 2830: James Joyce Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Sunday, 2 February 2025 is James Joyce.James Augustine Aloysius Joyce (2 February 1882 – 13 January 1941) was an Irish novelist, poet and literary critic. He contributed to the modernist avant-garde movement and is regarded as one of the most influential and important writers of the 20th century. Joyce's novel Ulysses (1922) is a landmark in which the episodes of Homer's Odyssey are paralleled in a variety of literary styles, particularly stream of consciousness. Other well-known works are the short-story collection Dubliners (1914), and the novels A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) and Finnegans Wake (1939). His other writings include three books of poetry, a play, letters, and occasional journalism.Joyce was born in Dublin into a middle-class family. He attended the Jesuit Clongowes Wood College in County Kildare, then, briefly, the Christian Brothers–run O'Connell School. Despite the chaotic family life imposed by his father's unpredictable finances, he excelled at the Jesuit Belvedere College and graduated from University College Dublin in 1902. In 1904, he met his future wife, Nora Barnacle, and they moved to mainland Europe. He briefly worked in Pula and then moved to Trieste in Austria-Hungary, working as an English instructor. Except for an eight-month stay in Rome working as a correspondence clerk and three visits to Dublin, Joyce resided there until 1915. In Trieste, he published his book of poems Chamber Music and his short story collection Dubliners, and he began serially publishing A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man in the English magazine The Egoist. During most of World War I, Joyce lived in Zürich, Switzerland, and worked on Ulysses. After the war, he briefly returned to Trieste and then moved to Paris in 1920, which became his primary residence until 1940.Ulysses was first published in Paris in 1922, but its publication in the United Kingdom and the United States was prohibited because of its perceived obscenity. Copies were smuggled into both countries and pirated versions were printed until the mid-1930s, when publication finally became legal. Joyce started his next major work, Finnegans Wake, in 1923, publishing it sixteen years later in 1939. Between these years, Joyce travelled widely. He and Nora were married in a civil ceremony in London in 1931. He made a number of trips to Switzerland, frequently seeking treatment for his increasingly severe eye problems and psychological help for his daughter, Lucia. When France was occupied by Germany during World War II, Joyce moved back to Zürich in 1940. He died there in 1941 after surgery for a perforated ulcer, at age 58.Ulysses frequently ranks high in lists of great books, and the academic literature analysing his work is extensive and ongoing. Many writers, film-makers, and other artists have been influenced by his stylistic innovations, such as his meticulous attention to detail, use of interior monologue, wordplay, and the radical transformation of traditional plot and character development. Though most of his adult life was spent abroad, his fictional universe centres on Dublin and is largely populated by characters who closely resemble family members, enemies and friends from his time there. Ulysses in particular is set in the streets and alleyways of the city. Joyce is quoted as saying, "For myself, I always write about Dublin, because if I can get to the heart of Dublin I can get to the heart of all the cities of the world. In the particular is contained the universal."This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:49 UTC on Sunday, 2 February 2025.For the full current version of the article, see James Joyce on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Niamh.

Full Text of ReadingsThe Epiphany of the Lord Lectionary: 20The Saint of the day is Saint John NeumannSaint John Neumann's Story Perhaps because the United States got a later start in the history of the world, it has relatively few canonized saints, but their number is increasing. John Neumann was born in what is now the Czech Republic. After studying in Prague, he came to New York at 25 and was ordained a priest. He did missionary work in New York until he was 29, when he joined the Redemptorists and became its first member to profess vows in the United States. He continued missionary work in Maryland, Virginia and Ohio, where he became popular with the Germans. At 41, as bishop of Philadelphia, he organized the parochial school system into a diocesan one, increasing the number of pupils almost twentyfold within a short time. Gifted with outstanding organizing ability, he drew into the city many teaching communities of sisters and the Christian Brothers. During his brief assignment as vice provincial for the Redemptorists, he placed them in the forefront of the parochial movement. Well-known for his holiness and learning, spiritual writing and preaching, on October 13, 1963, John Neumann became the first American bishop to be beatified. Canonized in 1977, he is buried in St. Peter the Apostle Church in Philadelphia. Reflection Neumann took seriously our Lord's words, “Go and teach all nations.” From Christ he received his instructions and the power to carry them out. For Christ does not give a mission without supplying the means to accomplish it. The Father's gift in Christ to John Neumann was his exceptional organizing ability, which he used to spread the Good News. Today the Church is in dire need of men and women to continue in our times the teaching of the Good News. The obstacles and inconveniences are real and costly. Yet when Christians approach Christ, he supplies the necessary talents to answer today's needs. The Spirit of Christ continues his work through the instrumentality of generous Christians. Zgodnie z życzeniem Bhante Sujato, w 2012 roku Santi zostało klasztorem mniszek, a on sam powrócił do Bodhinyana.Ajahn Sujato napisał kilka książek, między innymi "A Swift Pair of Messengers", "A History of Mindfuless", "Sects & Sectarianism", oraz we współautorstwie z Ajahnem Brahmalim "The Authenthicity of Early Buddhist Texts". Niedawno jego uczeń opuścił Viharę by realizować swój projekt "Little Dust", a Bhante Sujato kontynuuje swoje działania stacjonując w Lokanta Vihara.Nagranie mowy Dhammy i sesji medytacyjnej odbyło się 25.06.2023 w ramach comiesięcznych spotkań z Australijską Sanghą BSWA. In Part 4 of CONTRA VII, Dimitri and Khalid begin exploring the musical origins and Shakespearean career arc of the East San Francisco Bay's most legendary quirked up white boys (and eventual Castle Bank victims) Creedence Clearwater Revival, including: the murky and arguably Islamic roots of blues music in the Mississippi Delta, growing up in the sleepy post-war SF suburb of El Cerrito, Tom and John Fogerty getting blues-pilled by the local black radio stations in Oakland, John getting constantly hit on by Christian Brothers at Catholic school, joining forces with schoolmates Stu Cook and Doug Clifford, becoming Tommy Fogerty and the Blue Velvets, signing with the offbeat dirtbag cawmedy jazz label Fantasy Records in 1963, being forcibly named “The Golliwogs” to ride the Bri'ish Invasion wave, John's unfortunate stint in the US Army Reserves from 1966-68, rebooting as Creedence Clearwater Revival during San Francisco's Summer of Love, John's deep hatred of the MK Silk Topper Grateful Dead scene, his even deeper hatred of LSD, Timothy Leary, and stoner culture, his insistence that they always play sober despite CCR's tactical appeal to the psychedelic crowd on “Suzie Q” and “I Put a Spell on You”, John's assumption of full Stalinist leadership over the band, his growing anxiety that there's “somethin' missing” in Doug's shuffle beat, and the construction of Fogerty's mythical bayou from the violent fever dream swamp of the Vietnam War, the political assassinations of 1968, San Francisco MK culture, and President Richard Nixon.

Full Text of ReadingsSecond Sunday of Easter Sunday of Divine Mercy Lectionary: 44The Saint of the day is Saint John Baptist de La SalleSaint John Baptist de La Salle's Story Complete dedication to what he saw as God's will for him dominated the life of John Baptist de La Salle. Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Saint John Neumann, Bishop Lectionary: 208The Saint of the day is Saint John NeumannSaint John Neumann's Story Perhaps because the United States got a later start in the history of the world, it has relatively few canonized saints, but their number is increasing. Mr Grace is suing the congregation of the Christian Brothers over the abuse he suffered from Hendrick, but the congregation has adopted a legal strategy that has been described as “cynical” and a form of “double abuse”.Colm Keena explains the Christian Brothers makes life difficult for those wishing to hold them to account in the courts. In this video, I (Daniel) share my testimony with my agnostic-atheist brother John in the second episode of The Belief Dialogues. To start our discussion, I explain that what led me to faith in Christ was a spiritual need for forgiveness from my violations of the Moral Law. In this episode, various concepts are discussed between the two of us, such as: the concept of conviction, the Moral Law, are morals invented or discovered, our fundamental assumptions and presuppositions, finding meaning in life, my view of God, and what would convince me to change my mind about God as a Christian. #apologetics #Christianity #atheism #scienceandfaith #christianpodcast #christianpodcasters #christianpodcasts #christianpodcaster #christianpodcasting #sciencefaithandreasoning #sfr --------------------------------LINKS--------------------------------- Listen to The Science Faith & Reasoning podcast anywhere podcasts are listened to. Full Text of ReadingsGood Friday of the Lord's Passion Lectionary: 40The Saint of the day is Saint John Baptist de La SalleSaint John Baptist de La Salle's Story Complete dedication to what he saw as God's will for him dominated the life of John Baptist de La Salle. This week, Kate attempts to reclaim the nostalgic magic of fall by detailing her feelings about dystopian Instagram-backdrop businesses and resurrects the fauxliage phenomenon to chat about manufactured coziness and the art of photo taking. She then reminisces about some of her back to school and fall-related longings, like the lore of school supply shopping, how not all spiral notebook manufacturers are created equal, the scholastic book fair, among other things. She discusses her theory about misplaced disdain for early spirited fall decor and PSLs and hypothesizes Millennials' obsession with cosplaying the coziness of yesteryear and perhaps we're chasing a time when the seasons were valued for their beauty and not resented for their role in the passage of time. She then answers listener voicemails about sexist college theme parties, talks about when she met her husband at some point, discusses Trisha Paytas naming her kid Malibu Barbie (??) and her issues with modern naming conventions, does some royals & QEII coverage and the misinformation of Nostradamus' predictions, only to be too long-winded (as usual) and need to go into a part 2 bc of all the great questions this week.
