2025 U.S. INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS RECAP: Hobbs Kessler, Nikki Hiltz Sweep 1500m/3000m Titles; Josh Hoey Breaks His Own 800m American Record

CITIUS MAG Podcast with Chris Chavez

On today's show, we have a lot to talk about. Josh Hoey just ran 1:43.24 for 800 meters—indoors. That's the second-fastest time ever run indoors, behind only Wilson Kipketer. We'll break down what this means for the American 800m scene, how he's addressed skepticism that inevitably comes with a performance like this and whether Hoey is suddenly a legitimate outdoor medal contender.Hobbs Kessler doubled at USAs, taking both the 3000m and 1500m titles like it was just another weekend at the track. We'll talk about what impressed us the most about Kessler's double, how the men's middle distances are shaping up for 2025 and why it was OK for Cooper Teare and Cole Hocker to skip out.And then there's the "rivalry" that was quickly dispelled by the athletes – Nikki Hiltz vs. Shelby Houlihan. Just a few years ago, Houlihan was untouchable. Then came the four-year ban, and now, she's back—and already battling for the top spot. In the 3000m, Houlihan got to the front, squeezed the pace, and dared anyone to come with her. And Nikki Hiltz? They came with her. And then passed her. In the final strides of the women's 3000m, Hiltz outkicked Houlihan, officially stamping themselves as America's best championship racer in the middle distances.Plus, we'll get into the results of the sprints and why the 2025 World Indoor Championships in Nanjing might be one of the weirdest global meets we've ever seen—between withdrawals, travel logistics, and a US team that's missing some of its biggest stars.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. This week on the podcast is Ben Nagel! Last December, Ben graduated from Virginia Tech as a sub 4 miler and 1:47 800 guy. He trains under Ben Thomas with guys like Cooper Teare and Cole Hocker. But what is most impressive about Ben, is that in high school, his fastest mile that he ran was 4:40, which, on most competitive times, would be a solid JV time in high school. But having that huge transformation from running 4:40 to sub-4 was incredible to hear. Some of the stories and lessons that he shares today were incredibly inspiring for me personally, as I am in the mid 17s for 5K cross country my Sophomore year, and hearing Ben and his journey shows that we can do so much more than we think we can achieve and it's up to us as to whether or not we want to chase it. So, I had a blast chatting with Ben today. He had a lot of amazing things to say and I know that you will enjoy it as well. We talk all about what it is like to be coached under Ben Thomas, transitioning to running post-collegiately, the journey to the sub-4 barrier, his experiences with setting and achieving goals, his best advice for runners who want to be great, and much more. If you haven't already, please consider giving this podcast a follow and a five-star review on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. That goes a long way in supporting the growth of this podcast so we can inspire more people in the world of running and in that process grow this great sport that we all know and love. Along those lines, if you thought this episode was impactful or left a mark in any way, please share this with a teammate, a friend, your grandma, someone who you think could get a smile or a learning from today's show. I hope you enjoy this episode of The Sunday Shakeout!

"You have to measure out your peaks, especially in an Olympic year. But I'm really happy with my fitness right now. In years past, I haven't been this confident in my fitness. So I'm really happy and just excited to race (against) the world champs, the American record holders. That's really where I see myself thriving and I want to optimize those opportunities." – Cole Hocker Former Oregon Ducks Cooper Teare and Cole Hocker have reunited and are training together in Blacksburg, Virginia under coach Ben Thomas. Teare spent last year working with coach Jerry Schumacher and the Bowerman Track Club before announcing his departure in the fall. He took some time to make a decision but ultimately decided to reunite with his college coach, who led him to his U.S. 1500m title in 2022 and qualified for the World Championship team. Last year, Teare did set a personal best at 800 meters and 1500m but he missed qualifying for the World Championships in Budapest. He got off to a strong start in 2024 by winning the U.S. cross country title just two weeks ago. For Hocker, he's just elevating his training under Thomas and is hoping to have a full healthy year in the leadup to the World Indoor Championships in March and then the U.S. Olympic Trials this summer. Last year, he got off to a later start to the season due to injuries but still managed to qualify for Worlds and then finished seventh in Budapest in a personal best of 3:30.70 for 1500 meters. Both guys have been added to the men's two-mile field at the Millrose Games on February 11th in New York City. The field includes 1500m world champion Josh Kerr and U.S. 5000m and 10,000m record holder Grant Fisher. The Millrose Games is the sixth stop on the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold calendar. We chugged some chocolate whole milk to fuel this amazing episode! The main training topic was on why testosterone levels are relevant for all endurance athletes. While individuals have different genetic set-points for testosterone, studies on men and women show that training and fueling interventions can change baseline levels. Those changes can be positive, leading to more energy and better performance... or negative, possibly contributing to fatigue in training and life. We break down the complicated science, along with what athletes can do to optimize their levels safely and legally. And this episode was stuffed with the best discussions! Other topics: a study on caffeine and deception, lower-mileage training that features more cross training, Allie Ostrander's inspiring story of qualifying for Team USA in cross country, Cooper Teare's nose strip, breathing exercises and heart rate variability, a breaking-news study on performance impacts from strategic low-carb approaches, the prevalence of drug use in endurance athletes, our obsession with Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell, Jack Scott's triumph at the Spine Race, and our appreciation of David Goggins. Shhhh. Don't tell Jonathan Gault or Weldon Johnson but Robert Johnson secretly recorded this show without their permission. He reveals his biggest disappointments and surprises for 2023 and then gets super excited about the 2024 Paris Olympic Marathon. He breaks down the course and without saying it predicts that a sub-4 mile in the middle of it is more likely than a sub-2 hour marathon. He made that prediction on the messageboard. Speaking of messageboard, these are the two threads he talked about this week: Wife takes 45 minutes to say goodbye at holiday parties Dumbest article ever: Reuters: Will 2-hr marathon finally be broken at Paris Olympics? I'd be SHOCKED if it was under 2:04 Time stamps: 0:00 Intro and then talk about what percent of top 3 finishers at USAs repeat as top 3 the next year? Does this ratio hold true at the Worlds level? "I didn't know if I wanted to go pro after the Olympic trials. I actually had a job lined up. I had accepted a job offer in South Carolina to start in the fall starting August. And I called them when I qualified for the Trials and I'm like, “Hey, I'm not going to be there. I'm going back to school, I'm going to be in East Lansing.” Having the opportunity to come in for a sixth year and get a free master's degree was pretty big...I knew that competing more and getting my name out there a little bit more would be really advantageous. So I decided to come back as a collegiate and maybe get a maybe a better deal or get with a team that hadn't been looking at me that I was a better fit for after the trials. I didn't get a whole lot of attention from pro teams or even agents immediately after the Trials. It wasn't until the fall...Now I have the time to look at all of the options and see what's what and where I could go while not making any super rash decisions – all while still getting a master's degree." My guest for this episode is Michigan State sixth-year star Morgan Beadlescomb. This past weekend at the Windy City Invitational, most people's attention was on Cooper Teare and Cole Hocker's attempt to break Bernard Lagat's indoor mile American record of 3:49.89. They fell just shy as they lowered their personal bests to 3:50.17 for Cooper and 3:50.35 for Cole. Behind them was one of the biggest surprises from the weekend. Beadlescomb not only broke four minutes for the first time in his career but he ran 3:52.03 for the fourth-fastest time in NCAA history. Beadlescomb also ran 7:43.22 last month to be the top collegian in the Millrose Games men's 3,000m which was stacked with pro talent. In this episode, we discuss his breakout, why he was overlooked despite being 6th place at last year's Olympic Trials 5,000m final, his early thoughts and plans for the NCAA indoor championships and coming from a small town of 4,000 people in Michigan. “I really want to develop more of that 1,500-meter/mile speed. Hopefully, after that, we'll have another crack at a quick mile like we did last year at Arkansas – who knows, maybe go for an American record there. We were pretty close last year so hopefully if things keep trending the right way, we'll have a shot at that. USAs indoors obviously but not sure what we'll do there yet. Cole is trying to maybe look toward some of that higher-end stuff like 3K-5K so maybe he'll give me a shot at taking the mile title and he'll go for the 3K. We haven't figured out everything yet but it's all geared toward making that World team. That's the biggest thing to do. I know what I have to do now after getting fourth at Trials.” Cooper Teare just announced his decision to turn professional and signed a contract with Nike. We hear some insights into what that means for his future plans. He put together a really great last 12 months. He ran 3:50.39 for the mile and 7:46 indoors for the 3,000m. Outdoors, he ran 3:35 for 1,500 meters, broke the long-standing Oregon school record in the 5,000 meters with a 13:12.27 and claimed the NCAA outdoor title in the 5,000 meters to go along with the Oregon DMR and team title from indoor season. He was also fourth in the 5,000 meters at the U.S. Olympic Trials. In high school, Cooper ran 4:00.16 and just narrowly missed out on getting under the four-minute barrier. He eventually got it done as a freshman at Oregon but then really takes a step back to look at why the progression to becoming a 3:50 guy and NCAA champion worked out almost flawlessly. – We also did a video where we pulled up some of Cooper's old Instagram posts and had him tell us the stories behind them so that's only on YouTube so go ahead and subscribe to the CITIUS MAG YouTube channel for more cool content. Fast is a family thing for Cooper Teare. It's in the genes. Which explains why that history of running in the family lead him to Eugene and one of the most decorated track and field programs in the country. Long before the record breaking mile times, the NCAA championships and the state championship, Teare knew one thing. NCAA National 5k Champion Cooper Teare joins me on the show! Cooper is entering his fifth year at the University of Oregon as a very accomplished runner. He earned his first All-American honors in his sophomore year of college, finishing fourth in the indoor 3k in 2019. Hi junior year, Cooper placed sixth at cross-country nationals and earned All-American honors there as well. This past year, Cooper had even more success. He set the collegiate indoor mile record in February with a time of 3:50.39. Then, at nationals in March, Cooper finished second in the 3k and anchored Oregon's winning DMR team. In his outdoor track season, Cooper won a national title in the 5k, running 13:12.27. In doing so, he set the American collegiate record, the meet record, and the Oregon record. It also qualified him for the 5k at the US Olympic Trials, in which he finished fourth. Listen in to hear Cooper talk about his 5k win, why he's staying a fifth year at Oregon, and so much more. Got really random for my first episode and talked about some cool perspectives on big things that happened this past week in our sport of running. Nico Young had his first collegiate XC race (22:52 for 8k!) Christian Noble brutally attacks the DII record books and rewrites the 3k and 5k times with his name in them (7:51 & 13:37) The NCAA might not even count his 5k record! Listen to this episode to find out why. Cooper Teare helps set Collegiate DMR record. Cooper Teare is funny! Morgan Mcdonald is also funny!
