3G Capital's buyout of Burger King may be the most successful private equity deal you've never heard about. Over the last fourteen years, or the length of a typical private equity fund, 3G turned a $1 billion investment into $28 billion in value. The annual dividends from the investment accruing to 3G today are around 70% of its invested capital. The deal is one of the highest earning buyouts ever. 3G is an organization with a storied history. Founded by Jorge Paolo Lemann, Carlos Alberto Sicupira, and Marcel Herrmann Telles, the group created an owner-operator model of investing. They rose to prominence through building the largest beer company in the world, initially buying local brewer Brahma in 1989, expanding it and merging with a competitor to become AmBev in 1999, merging with Interbrew to become ImBev in 2004, and taking over Anheuser Busch in 2008 to become AB InBev. Twenty years ago, Alex Behring, a young star on their team, moved to the US to form 3G Capital and take the approach abroad. Burger King was the second largest hamburger fast food chain after McDonalds in 2010 when 3G took it private. What it accomplished since then has been extraordinary. My guests to discuss 3G and the deal are Alex Behring and Daniel Schwartz. Co-Managing Partners of 3G Capital. Our conversation covers the history of 3G, Alex's journey to form 3G Capital, and the 3G playbook. We then dive into the deal, covering the sourcing and deal dynamics, improving operations, growing the business, taking the company public unexpectedly, and reloading to buy Tim Horton's, Popeye's, and Firehouse Subs. Today's Burger King is part of Restaurant Brands International (QSR), a public company with a $32 billion market cap and $50 billion enterprise value. This classic deal will widen your aperture on what's possible with a long-term, compounding holding period and operational excellence. That production combines text from Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice with Elizabethan history and news from 2020 to the present. In doing so, it seeks to illuminate how, during times of upheaval, some people may place blame for their anxieties on an “other."Read the transcription for "The Merchant of Venice: Ghetto.

Lonna Ralbag has been demanding a get from Meir Kin for 18 years and still hasn't received it. According to Jewish law, this means that she cannot remarry, and is effectively trapped as a type of aguna - a chained woman. Meanwhile, her estranged husband, despite public pressure, seems to revel in having become the king of the get-refusers. He has a YouTube channel and managed to remarry while leaving Lonna unable to do the same. And he does all of this while claiming to be a religious Jew, following Halacha. Indeed, he presents himself as the victim of a smear campaign. It's clear that Meir Kin's actions represent a reprehensible perversion of Jewish law and a massive chilul HaShem, desecration of G-d's name. Lonna's story is tragic, but she is strong and is working to relieve her plight and that of other women in comparable situations. Lonna's story is as much a tale of resilience as it is of sadness and frustration. On today's episode, Scott speaks to Lonna Ralbag, her attorney, Daniel Schwartz, and Keshet Starr, Executive Director of the Organization for the Resolution of Agunot. When you encounter new information from sources that you're unfamiliar with, some of it will undoubtedly be complex and inaccessible. This can often serve as an incentive for people to abandon their quest for polymathy. However, analogies are an extremely powerful tool that makes breaking down complicated information easy and efficient. Analogies are essentially comparisons between two seemingly unrelated concepts or skills. To maximize your learning, you'll need to learn how to use what you already know and draw connections to what you're learning in innovative ways. This forces you to transfer your learning, ensuring you retain more information in the long-term.  To start using analogies for learning, you'll need to familiarize yourself with academic analogies. These consists of four parts divided into two groups. On the left side, you make a certain type of connection between things you know about, like code in video games. Code is the main building block upon which video games are built. If you're learning law, you'll know that law is to constitution what code is to video games. To use the standard analogy format, we'd state this as: “code : video games :: law : constitution.” Questions or comments regarding the podcast? Dan has developed seminars in all three of those areas as well as MC’d for international speakers and hosted a monthly news segment on Channel 3 TV Thailand. “I like to talk about winning and learning, not winning and losing and take the emotion out. And if you really want to do your own trading and your own investing, do the research, get the information from experts.” – Daniel Schwartz Worst investment ever Daniel had some friends who were making a lot of money working in the investment research advisory business for specialist companies who promoted penny stocks. They would receive commissions on when and how many stocks were bought. One of his friends would call him and say: “Hey, Dan, take a look at this company.” Daniel would read the very brief reports and buy around US$1,000 of stock at a time based on the little information provided and the recommendation of this friend. He doesn’t remember any of the company names because he feels that the brain likes to block out bad memories. Sometimes he would win, sometimes the prices would be stable, and sometimes he lost it all. It was an interesting experience, but he likens it more to gambling, because he didn’t really know what he was doing. On all those investments, he lost up to US$40,000 but he learned a lot. He says it was a very bad idea from the point of view of an investment decision to be playing around with penny stocks put forward by people who were earning commissions. Some lessons learned It is a very bad investment idea to trade in penny stocks. Especially when such stocks are promoted by people earning commissions. Trading is best left to the experts and other people. Know your own personality profile. Best Through that you can know also what kind of investing you should do, and in which types of business or professions suit you. Stay away from the hype. Greed is not good. Wise people talk about the idea that the time to be fearful is when others are greedy or the time to be greedy is when others are fearful. Suffice to say, greed comes with it an emotional response, and that is not something carried out by the logical part of the brain. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Go with experts with verifiable track records that you can look at yourself and read the material. If talking about trading, go with someone who has a verifiable positive track record. Remember to check experts’ record also in a down market. Always remember – past performance is never a guarantee of future results. No one can predict the future and unheard of events can be just around the corner. Listening to someone on commission, pitching you over the phone, is probably not the smartest idea when it comes to buying stocks or putting money into investments. Andrew’s takeaways Never invest when somebody calls you to introduce it. When somebody is calling you about an investment idea they are most definitely compensated in some way for doing that. People are not on the phone, randomly calling people for the benefit of the receiver. Be aware that our minds can be hijacked by the excitement of promised “amazing” returns, such as the “50x” example that Daniel gave. Penny stocks are a great example. Investing is truly a physical thing, causing a physical reaction and we do things based on emotions and mental triggers that are being pulled by phone salespeople. Make sure your interests are aligned with the people that are helping you with investing as best that you can. This can never be achieved perfectly but it’s something to always bear in mind. Actionable advice If someone calls you or approaches you with an investment idea, do not make that decision in the moment. If anyone pushes you to buy over the phone when you do not even know them, they are using all kinds of psychological tools to get you to act – such as playing on the human fear of missing out (FOMO), “the take away” – run away and run fast. #1 goal for next 12 months Daniel wants to recover from the past 12 months of craziness in the markets and be in a position, personally and professionally, to take advantage of what is happening now what has been learned with the markets in the crypto space, in Forex and in stocks. He wants to use that experience so he can help more people to be successful. He also wants to watch his three-and-a-half-year-old son grow, spend time with him and try to instill in him knowledge so that when he gets old enough he’ll have the benefit of Dan’s experience and past mistakes so that he can make a whole range of different mistakes. Parting words Be careful with your money, take the emotion out and think, and don’t let the greed part take over.   You can also check out Andrew’s books How to Start Building Your Wealth Investing in the Stock Market My Worst Investment Ever 9 Valuation Mistakes and How to Avoid Them Transform Your Business with Dr.Deming’s 14 Points    Connect with Daniel Schwartz LinkedIn    Connect with Andrew Stotz astotz.com  LinkedIn Facebook  Instagram Twitter  YouTube My Worst Investment Ever Podcast     Further reading mentioned  Jason Zweig (2007) Your Money and Your Brain: How the New Science of Neuroeconomics Can Help Make You Rich

Daniel Schwarz leads Restaurant Brands International, the parent company of Burger King, Tim Horton’s, and Popeye’s. He started out his career at the investment firm 3G Capital. In 2013, when he was only 32, the firm’s managing partner, Alex Behring, took a big chance on him and promoted him to CEO of Burger King. Now, Schwartz is returning the favor by betting on young talent to lead his businesses.

A Small Voice: Conversations With Photographers

Daniel Schwartz concentrates on book projects with exhibitions, based on extensive travels, photographic essays, and reportages covering the Eastern Hemisphere from Iran to East Timor and from Turkmenistan to Bangladesh. Daniel’s art, as he puts it, is in the history of places and his journalism rather than being a reaction to events, builds on memory. His method is perhaps best expressed in Travelling through the Eye of History (published, in 2009, like all his books, by Thames & Hudson), a pre- and post-9/11 observation covering Central Asia including Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Kashmir. In 1987 to 1988, during a forbidden journey, Daniel became the first foreigner and photographer to travel along all sections of the Great Wall of China. His documentation of the habitats of South and Southeast Asia's deltas, endangered by the consequences of climate change, were an early photojournalistic investigation into that subject, celebrated by the Financial Times as a visual j’accuse and made him twice a finalist of the W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography. He continues to work on the subject of climate change for While the Fires Burn: A Glacier Odyssey, his exploration of the recession of the world’s glaciers. In episode 088, Daniel discusses, among other things: Early education Using assignments to pursue personal projects Going to Greece China and The Great Wall The Deltas and climate change His relationship with publisher Thames & Hudson His work on documenting glaciers in While The Fires Burn The documentary about his life and work, Beyond The Obvious His travels in central Asia, the history of that region and the five republics The importance to him of writing The current situation in Yemen His income pie chart Joining VII Photos Referenced: Guy Bourdin John Thompson Sophie Calle Francis Fukuyama Website “We need to listen. First of all we need to go, see for ourself, and then obviously we meet people and we have to listen to them. We should forget about our pre-concepts which we carry. We inform ourselves at home and then we forget what we have read, and we go there. And this will eventually change or modify the concepts we have, and we need to listen to what people have to say to us and to find a way of building their information into the way we see things.”

The term "ghetto" was first applied to overcrowded Jewish quarters in late nineteenth-century American cities like New York and Chicago. Over the course of the next century the word was thoroughly Americanized and primarily associated with urban segregation in the United States. Daniel Schwartz illustrates the word's diverse history, use and meaning. For captions, transcript, and more information visit http://www.loc.gov/today/cyberlc/feature_wdesc.php?rec=5984

The episodes just keep getting longer! Can this keep up? I con't imagine it can, no. I mean, in a month or two it would become completely unwieldy. Eventually, it would take long enough to listen to it that new episodes would be out before you finished. By that point, it would become impossible to record episodes in time to put them out, too. So, let's not worry about that. In this episode: A hot-potato-style hosting segment with Jordan, Frank, Rory, and Scape! Over the past years, we have been developing a computer learning technology called a Teachable Agent. The work leverages the common wisdom that people "really" learn when they have to teach. After a few years of positive results, we decided to get a better look at the mechanisms that drive learning in social interaction. Most cognitively inspired theories of learning point to the useful questions and ideas that arise in social interaction. But, can we really reduce the learning benefits of social interaction to a question of information flow? In this talk, I will present "laboratory" style data that tightly controls the types of information that arise in social interaction. I will show that learning from social interaction cannot be wholly ascribed to the different types of information that arise. For example, in a wizard of oz study, people thought they were interacting with a person or a computer, and information exchange was held constant across conditions. People learned more when they thought it was a person; people were more aroused when they thought it was a person; and finally level of arousal was correlated with learning.
