Sometimes described as "a theologian's theologian," David Tracy's scholarship has impacted countless thinkers around the globe. The complexity of his thought, however, has often made engaging his work into a daunting challenge. Combining analysis of the most influential features of Tracy's theology (theological method, the religious classic, public theology) with a retrieval of his more overlooked interests (Christology, God), Stephen Okey presents the essential themes of Tracy's career in accessible and insightful prose. David was anointed by the prophet Samuel as a young teenager, likely between the ages of 10 and 15, as recorded in 1 Samuel 16. He became king at the age of 30, as stated in 2 Samuel 5:4. Therefore, approximately 15 to 20 years elapsed between his anointing and his ascension to the throne. During this period, David experienced significant trials and growth. He served in King Saul's court, became a renowned warrior, and spent years fleeing from Saul's attempts to kill him. These experiences prepared him for his future role as king. David's journey from anointing to kingship exemplifies the importance of patience and faith in the fulfilment of God's promises.
Dr. Alejandro Nava and Dr. Raúl Zegarra converse about their respective books, Street Scriptures: Between God and Hip-Hop (University of Chicago Press, 2022) and A Revolutionary Faith: Liberation Theology Between Public Religion and Public Reason (Stanford University Press, 2023). Both writers were students of David Tracy and they share the concern of public theology's impact on broader society. Dr. Zegarra embraces what he considers the sophisticated philosophy of John Rawls, in particular, “the way he thinks about justice…for the poor.” Conversations at the interface of diverse traditions and the public is of utmost importance to his interests. In his practice, Dr. Nava's work at the “hyphen that connects the mystical and prophetic” comes to life through hip-hop as “a voice of disenfranchised communities” that “...emerged out of the cracks and corners of the modern world.”
In this episode of OP Talks, Amirah Orozco, a doctoral student of Systematic Theology at Notre Dame, talks with Dr. Raúl Zegarra, Assistant Professor of Roman Catholic Theological Studies at Harvard Divinity School, about his book A Revolutionary Faith: Liberation Theology Between Public Religion and Public Reason (Stanford University Press, 2023). The book, which is in conversation with the work of theologians Gustavo Gutiérrez and David Tracy, delves into how religious organizing and mobilizing can help enrich and strengthen democracy. Dr. Zegarra's work “shows how liberation theology advocates have been able to produce a new balance between faith and politics that advances an agenda of progressive social change without reducing politics to faith or faith to politics,” writes Stanford University Press.

David was super impressed when he drove the 2024 Toyota Tacoma and we wrote about it, a lot. Right after David took his turn in the Tacoma we had a chance to talk to two designers from the legendary CALTY design studio at the LA Auto Show and they provided a ton of great detail on how it came to exist. This podcast, presented by our friends at Marble, was shot a few weeks ago and features our own Beau Boeckmann, David Tracy, and Jason Torchinsky before his circulatory system went full Lucas. As our guests we've got both Adam Rabinowitz, exterior chief designer, and Benjamin Jimenez, General Manager at CALTY. Additionally, the one-and-only Stephen Walter Gossin joined us to talk trucks.Mentioned in this episode:Marble Ad Link

Religious commitments can be a powerful engine for progressive social change. In A Revolutionary Faith: Liberation Theology Between Public Religion and Public Reason (Stanford UP, 2023), Raúl E. Zegarra examines the process of articulation of religious beliefs and political concerns that takes place in religious organizing and activism. Focusing on the example of Latin American liberation theology and the work of Peruvian theologian Gustavo Gutiérrez, Zegarra shows how liberation theology advocates have been able to produce a new balance between faith and politics that advances an agenda of progressive social change without reducing politics to faith or faith to politics. Drawing from theologian David Tracy's method of critical correlation, the book focuses on key historical, philosophical, and theological shifts that have allowed liberation theologians to produce a new interpretation of the relationship between faith and politics in the Christian tradition, especially when issues of social justice are at stake. The book further approaches liberation theology's contributions to theorizing social justice through an unconventional path: a critical dialogue with the work of philosopher John Rawls. This dialogue, as Zegarra contends, allows us to see more clearly the contributions of liberation theology to the cause of progressive social change. Ultimately the book stands between "public religion" and "public reason," offering something of a blueprint for theological innovation and for how to remain committed to one's faith while respecting and defending the core values of democracy. Jason Torchinsky and David Tracy are two of the most entertaining writers to ever work at Jalopnik. Jason has a knowledge of obscure cars (and other machinery) that rivals Google. JF and Phil have been talking about doing a show on The Glass Bead Game since Weird Studies' earliest beginnings. It is a science-fiction novel that alights on some of the key ideas that run through the podcast: the dichotomy of work and play, the limits and affordances of institutional life, the obscure boundary where certainty gives way to mystery... Throughout his literary career, Hesse wrote about people trying to square their inner and outer selves, their life in the spirit and their life in the world. The Glass Bead Game brings this central concern to a properly ambiguous and heartbreaking conclusion. But the novel is more than a brilliant work of philosophical or psychological literature. It is also an act of prophecy -- one that seems intended for us now. Header image by Liz West, via Wikimedia Commons (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Green_marbles_2.jpg). The next time you see a guy working on his Jeep in a Walmart parking lot, you may want to do a double-take. It could be David Tracy. David is a Senior Technical Editor for Jalopnik, but that title barely scratches the surface of his job. For the last five years, this former automotive engineer-turned-journalist has made a career out of buying used cars (especially his cherished Jeeps) that no sane person would touch, including a rusted out $500 USPS mail Jeep and a mouse-infested $1500 1958 FC170. He writes about the ownership experience and documents how - using ingenuity, skill and junkyard visits - he makes them road-worthy again. His hilarious writing has made him one of the site's most popular writers and a folk hero to shadetree mechanics around the world. At the time of this podcast, he has 12 cars in his stable... all in various states of repair. But David's story goes way beyond wrenching rusty bolts. Here's someone who was obsessed about cars as a kid and earned a Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Virginia with a singular goal: A job at Chrysler. Thanks to hard work and hustle, he achieved that only to discover that the reality didn't match the dream. He then discovered his true calling, honestly writing about and demystifying the intimidating world of cars. David is one of my favorite people in the car world and getting to talk to him for this interview didn't disappoint. His passion for cars is infectious and we even talked about my vehicle of choice (Toyota Land Cruisers) for a minute. He's insightful, hilarious and more than a little MacGyver. I think you'll love him. https://jalopnik.com/author/David_Tracy This episode is sponsored by MyPerfectColor. They describe their first date at The Broken Record, a bar in the Excelsior renowned for its strange and gut-busting food. The date went so well that they wanted to see each other again a few days later, and they talk about that second date, too. Join us again Thursday to hear the story of getting married, Sonia's health, and the kid they decided to raise in the city. We recorded this podcast at Barebottle Brewing in January 2019. Show Rundown: In this week’s show we review the 15th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 with friend of the show, and my better half, David Tracy from the Chaos Group. In our second segment, we talk about the state of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and answer the question, “Are franchise movies getting better?” And finally we end our show with what we’re dorking out about this week, including the MTV Movie & TV Awards and Edge Of Tomorrow 2. Topic 1: Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 Review Even though it’s only the first week of May, the summer movie season has officially started with the release of “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2,” the 15th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which made $145 million this past weekend, pushing the Marvel Cinematic Universe past $11 billion. The misfits from the first “Guardians Of The Galaxy” return, including Chris Pratt as Peter Quill aka Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, and the voices of Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon and Vin Diesel as Baby Groot. Michael Rooker as Yondu also returns, and we are introduced Mantis an empath who can feel people’s emotions played by Pom Klementieff and Ego The Celestial played by Kurt Russell. Joining us to talk about “Guardians” and the Marvel Cinematic Universe is David Tracy, who co-hosts my other podcast Old Movies, New Beer and works for Chaos Group, which creates the rendering software that is used in pretty much every TV show and movie you love, including “Game Of Thrones,” “The Walking Dead,” “Doctor Strange,” “Rogue One,” “Deadpool” and - of course - “The Spongebob Squarepants Movie.” Topic 2: The Marvel MCU and Are Franchise Movies Getting Better? The state of the Marvel MCU and the wider world of franchise filmmaking, all based on some Dorking Out Show research Smith did, which can be found on our Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/dorkingoutshow/photos/a.1832239517003995.1073741828.1808733706021243/2000617333499545/?type=3&theater and our twitter page here: https://twitter.com/dorkingoutshow/status/860921992718843904 What We’re Dorking Out About This Week: Did you know that MTV Movie Awards are now the MTV Movie & TV Awards? Show Rundown: In this week’s episode, we review Disney’s live action remake of “Beauty & The Beast,” which made $170 million this weekend at the box office. David Tracy, the biggest Disney fan I know and my handsome better half and co-host of my other podcast Old Movies, New Beer, will BE OUR GUEST to talk about. In our second segment, David sticks around to chat about FX’s new anthology series “Feud: Bette & Joan.” And we will end our show with what we are dorking out about this week. Topic 1: Beauty & The Beast Review It’s a tale as old as time. A song as old as rhyme. It’s “Beauty & The Beast,” the latest Disney live-action remake along the lines of “Alice In Wonderland,” “The Jungle Book” and “Cinderella.” Directed by Bill Condon, who we will like to remember directed Dreamgirls and Gods & Monsters, but he also directed two Twilight movies, and starring Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as The Beast, Luke Evans as Gaston, Josh Gad as LeFou, with voices by Ewan McGregor, Sir Ian McKellen, Emma Thompson, Audra McDonald and Stanley Tucci. If you don’t know what Beauty & The Beast is about, then you’re probably not listening to this podcast, so … joining us for to talk about “Beauty & The Beast” is the biggest Disney fan I know and the Beauty to my Beast, David Tracy, who co-hosts my other podcast Old Movies, New Beer and works for Chaos Group, which creates the rendering software that is used in pretty much every TV show and movie you love, including “Game Of Thrones,” “The Walking Dead,” “Doctor Strange,” “Rogue One,” “Deadpool” and - of course - “The Spongebob Squarepants Movie.” Thank you for joining us, David. Topic 2: Feud: Bette & Joan on FX Last year, Ryan Murphy unleashed on the world The People vs. OJ Simpson: American Crime, one of the guilty and non-guilty TV viewing pleasures of 2016. Spring 2017 arrives with his latest event mini-series, Feud, starring Jessica Lange as Joan Crawford and Susan Sarandon as Bette Davis and retelling not only the decades long running gunfight these two legendary actresses had from the 1930s to the 1960s, but also the production of one of the most legendary (lots of legendary going on here, there’s a reason this story is being told 50 years later) horror films of all time: Whatever Happened to Baby Jane. Part a retelling of the end of Hollywood’s first Golden Age, part an examination of the knife fights women can get into with each other (this is almost a mirror version of Don Draper’s vices from Mad Men) and part a Ryan Murphy Wisconsin-class cheese fest, Feud is… well, Sonia, you tell me what you think Feud is. In this episode we talk to Matthew Becker who used to be a minister in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS), a conservative denomination of the Lutheran church that does not ordain women. We talk about Matt’s personal growth in the LCMS, how he came to question the more conservative doctrines of the denomination (specifically Creationism and women’s ordination), and the heresy charges and tribunals that he had to go through, which, ultimately, lead him to leave the LCMS all together. Dr. Matthew Becker, M.Div., M.A., Ph.D. was born in Salem, Oregon, in 1962. He attended public schools there and graduated in 1984 from Concordia University, Portland, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in the liberal arts. That same year he entered the Master of Divinity program at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri. After receiving his Master of Divinity degree from Concordia Seminary in 1988, he entered a doctoral program in theology at the University of Chicago. While a student in that university, he was privileged to study under such notable theologians as Brian Gerrish, David Tracy (his Doktorvater), and Martin Marty. During that time Dr. Becker also took courses at the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago. In 1990 he earned a Master of Arts in Religious Studies degree from the University of Chicago. In 1996 he passed his doctoral examinations with the mark of “with distinction.” His dissertation, "The Self-giving God: Trinitarian Historicality and Kenosis in the Theology of Johann von Hofmann (1810-1877)," was completed in the summer of 2001. A revised version of this work was later published as The Self-Giving God and Salvation History: The Trinitarian Theology of Johannes von Hofmann (T&T Clark, 2004). This work examines the theology of one of the most important Lutheran theologians of the nineteenth century. Dr. Becker was ordained into the Lutheran ministry in 1989. Until July 2015 he was a rostered clergyman in the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod (LCMS). He is currently seeking ordination in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). For five years he was an assistant pastor and later associate pastor at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, West Dundee, Illinois (1989-94). For two of those years he also served as an interim pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Chicago. In addition to his academic responsibilities, Dr. Becker has served as the Secretary of the Northwest District of the LCMS (2000-4). Between Oct 2010 and March 2014 he served as the interim pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Michigan City, Indiana. Dr. Becker and his wife, Detra, were married in June 1993. They have a sixteen-year-old son, Jacob.
