I've seen that coming to Vṛndāvana—especially, I mean, I'm coming to India three times a year now—but this is a special kind of retreat. And I agree with you on the intensity I've seen. It takes a while to get in resonance with the environment here, and if you fall out of resonance, it can be torture, because you could be here and then not want to be here. That can happen. The mind can just flip, and then you're gone. So, it's a real art. It's like surfing or something, you know? Learning to catch the wave while you're here and staying on it—don't wipe out. I've seen that as a really important part of my sādhana, to come to the dhāma very deliberately, to leave things behind and be incognito in many ways, although not completely, and then to spend the time here and ride those waves. It takes cultivation to be able to resonate with the dhāma. I mean, some people come here and then they wear a t-shirt that says, "I Left My Heart in Vṛndāvana," and that's probably true because it's charming. But, as you were saying, going anywhere and then living there in your heart, you have to have a relationship here. Means Kṛṣṇa is a person, and ārādhyo bhagavān vrajeśa-tanayas tad-dhāma vṛndāvanam. There's no difference between Kṛṣṇa and his dhāma—they are non-different. So, to come here and then be able to feel welcomed here, and also to feel that this is becoming more and more the place, the only place you really want to be even when you're somewhere else, I think that takes a lifetime of dedication, of coming on a regular basis. That's why Prabhupāda kept telling us every year we had to come. It was something he ordered all his disciples: he said, "Just come, whatever you're doing," because there were so many thoughts. "Yeah, but we're building a temple," or "Is it just come?" You have to come. So, I really like the way you were thinking about that and the feeling of resonating with the dhāma. There's more than one way to stay on top of your profession. One of the best ways is to take what you do best and meld it with the new trends, making your operation germane and important, now and going forward. For the better part of eight decades, Anthony Dominick Benedetto, better known as Tony Bennett, was a musical force, a singer's singer, who began as a nightclub crooner, singing the standards of the day. By the time of his passing last year, Bennett was working with current favorites Lady Gaga and Carrie Underwood, staying relevant while retaining his old school charm. This past week, another Tony Bennett, this one a college basketball coach, took another path, electing to get out of the game rather than evolve with the times. The basketball Bennett, abruptly retired from coaching at the relatively young age of 55 and three weeks from the start of a new season. Bennett led the University of Virginia's men's team to its first national title five years ago and his Cavaliers would likely have been a force to be reckoned with in their conference and nationally. Indeed, Bennett recently signed a lucrative contract extension to stay at UVA for years to come. But Bennett told a hastily assembled press conference last week that he'd had enough of the game that had been a part of his life for over 35 years, counting playing and coaching, Bennett effectively came to the conclusion that he didn't leave the game, but rather, basketball has left him. Specifically, Bennett balked at coaching in the new paradigm of college athletics where power has shifted from the people who run it to those who play. Bennett said quote “The game and college athletics is not in a healthy spot,” And there needs to be change. I think I was equipped to do the job here the old way. That's who I am and that's how it was. My staff has buoyed me along to get to this point, but there needs to be change unquote. Waves of change have crashed over college sports in recent years. From the unholy alliances of schools in new conferences to the indirect and soon to be direct payment of athletes by boosters and schools and the transfer portal, the world that Tony Bennett entered years ago has evolved. Some coaches have embraced the change and tried to make the most of it. But for some like Bennett and contemporaries like Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, Roy Williams of North Carolina and Jay Wright of Villanova, college basketball has morphed into something they don't want to be associated with any more. And so each of those men, all national championship coaches and current, if not future Basketball Hall of Fame enshrinees, have called it a career, rather than try to make a go of it. The singer Tony Bennett is, of course, best known for the haunting song “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.” His namesake, the basketball coach, may come to be known for leaving his nerve and a chance to challenge the system in Charlottesville. It's not nearly as catchy, but a whole lot more heartbreaking. And that's how I see it for this week. You can reach us via email with your questions and comments at Sports at Large at gmail.com. And follow me on Threads and X at Sports at Large. Until next week, for all of us here and for producer Spencer Bryant, I'm Milton Kent. Rest in peace, Tony Bennett. This tribute episode is in honor of one of music's greatest legends. From humble beginnings as a grocer's son in Astoria, Queens, Anthony Benedetto extensively studied voice and painting. This diligence resulted in his rise to stardom after serving in the army during World War II. Actor Bob Hope was impressed by this young singer's talent in a night club and helped him propel his career forward. Known as "Joe Bari" at the time, this youthful vocalist changed his name to "Tony Bennett" and signed on with Columbia Records in 1951. Several of his hits topped the charts including "Rags to Riches", "Cold Cold Heart" and "Just In Time." In 1962 his single "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" topped the charts. His popularity decreased in the late 1960s. With the help of his marketing expert son, Danny Bennett, he was rebranded for a wider audience in the mid-1980s. Newer generations embraced him as he made an appearance on MTV's unplugged. In 1998 his autobiography "The Good Life" was published. Also an extremely talented painter, he signed all his works as "Anthony Benedetto." The Dixie Chicks, Michael Buble, Amy Winehouse and Lady GaGa were more recent artists he has collaborated with on music ventures. In 2021 he announced that he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Despite his illness, he continued to tour and release albums. He passed away just a few days shy of his ninety-seventh birthday. My husband Joe and I team up for a soulful memorial podcast episode that commemorates this giant of the music industry.

Twelve days after the passing of Tony Bennett, Michael Moore shares his encounters with this truly great American. From the first time they met 33 years ago, to the times they often sat in attendance a grade school band concert, to Tony's participation in the Selma March, his Bronze Star in the army in WWII for helping to liberate a Dachau concentration camp, to being there (along with Harry Belafonte) on the opening night of Mike's Broadway show. For years, Tony was an accidental mentor to Mike and a source of wisdom on how to make it in this world. This is Michael Moore's tribute to a good soul who meant a lot to many. Producer Renee plays her rendition on PIANO " I Left My Heart in San Francisco " Written in 1953 by: Music, George Cory, Lyrics, Douglass Cross. Here are the Lyrics:I left my heart in San Francisco, High on a hill, it calls to me,To be where the little cable cars,They climb halfway to the stars,The morning fog will chill the air,But I don't care,My love waits there, in San Francisco,Above the blue and windy sea,When I come home to you, San Francisco,Your golden sun will shine for me.

We start to hear a thumping. The guys ask each other what's going on, what's the sound? They pull off the roadway and, by the car lights, open the trunk from where the pounding is coming. There, a bloody man wrapped in a sheet starts pleading with them, “No, no…” One of the three stabs the man repeatedly with a butcher knife, and then another of the guys shoots the body four times. The driver is just out of picture, reaching for the trunk lid, then slams it down, we zoom in on him in closeup as we hear his voiceover: “As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster.” He's lit in the eerie red of the car taillights. On the soundtrack, Tony Bennett swings into a song, not “I Left My Heart,” but “Rags To Riches.” That's the protagonist of the film closing the trunk, that was Ray Liotta playing Henry Hill. That's the first two minutes of Goodfellas. email: David@thosewonderfulpeople.comWebsite and blog: www.thosewonderfulpeople.comIG: @thosewonderfulpeopleTwitter: @FilmsInTheDark

Souls reside within a paradox. On the one hand, they are whole and complete miniatures of God, “sparks of Divinity,” and on the other hand they seem fragile and ready to splinter into millions of pieces. Neither perception is entirely accurate. The soul is a vast ray of light, bigger than anything in the physical universe. It is permeable and malleable and because of this, it can extend itself into various lifetimes, levels and dimensions in order to perceive what is taking place there. When it has intense experiences in the lower worlds, a part of the soul (the magnetic part usually) is often drawn into those experiences and becomes attached, emotionally and energetically. Every time you have an intense experience, trauma or negative event imprint itself onto one or more of your six lower bodies, that imprint affects your soul to some degree. If there is a lot of intense feeling, some of your soul energy is drawn into that experience, as well as the place and time where the experience occurred, as well as any beings or objects that were part of the experience. You have a popular song on your planet called, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.” While it might be one of those “silly love songs” to some, it illustrates what we are talking about here. If you had an intense love affair in that city, you may have left some of your soul fragments there, in your lover, and in the places where you and your lover met and had strong feelings. When you hear certain pieces of music, you might think about certain places. While the song might be just a mental trigger, it could also be opening a “portal” into which fragments of your soul have gone in times past. When you dream about certain places over and over again with vivid clarity, it is a good possibility that you have fragments of your soul in those places, especially if thinking about those places brings up a lot of intense feelings. It is more than just strong memories or emotional reminiscing. These are energetic attachments. Your soul has become stretched, twisted and concentrated around these places, people and events. This channel has reported that right before a major travel period, he often feels “ungrounded.” He sometimes experiences being less able to focus on what is right in front of him. He attributes this to aspects of his soul going ahead of him to the places where he is about to travel and making smooth the way before his physical body gets there. When you fantasize about the future, or reminisce about the past, you may be doing more than simply engaging your mind in idle memories. Your soul may be stretching itself along your timeline and even venturing into alternate timelines, especially if you are prone to contemplating “what if” scenarios. You may have heard the expression, “Being fearful of the future will bring fearful experiences to you.” When you speculate with “what if” possibilities, your soul stretches itself into those various alternate timelines formed by concentrating energy in particular directions. If enough intensity surrounds worrying and fretting about a specific outcome, you are energizing that outcome and making it more possible. If you could see the way your soul fragments and sends its energy along numerous light and dark corridors, it would seem like a fluid seeping through a complex latticework of cracks in the ground. Where it pools into tangible energy is where your thoughts and feelings are repeatedly obsessing or anticipating outcomes. In order to better understand how souls stretch, twist, distort and fragment, we will put these experiences into categories. The casual “what ifs” and ponderings may result in the creation of minor soul fragments, small packets of soul energy that embed themselves into certain realms, dimensions, levels and places within time and space. When a tremendous amount of energy is invested in a person, place or thing, you may have major soul fragments embedded there. Today’s episode, spontaneously crafted over the course of a few hours, features live performances of three longer works that, each in its own way, has something very specific to offer us as we face the uncertainty of our immediate future. First, a 1946 performance of Brahms’s Alto Rhapsody featuring the African American contralto Carol Brice with Serge Koussevitzky leading the Boston Symphony Orchestra. There follows a live performance from 1954 of French soprano Françoise Ogéas performing the title role of Debussy’s Rossetti-based cantata La damoiselle élue with mezzo-soprano Ginette Guillamat as the Récitante. Debussy specialist Désiré-Émile Inghelbrecht leads the forces of the ORTF. The third major work in today’s episode is Samuel Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915, in a live Carnegie Hall performance from October 10, 1958 by Eleanor Steber, who commissioned and premiered the work, accompanied by pianist Edwin Bitcliffe. Guest vocal appearances by Jewel Brown singing “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” and Marian Anderson performing “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands” round out the episode. Good Menopause to you! Sarah and Julia talk about their low-tech microphone set up and how they want to upgrade soon! We talk about Julia’s daughter’s birthday party, when Julia hired a terrific balloon guy. He made a Snow White and a Diamond Ring. And Julia’s birthday is coming up - she’s about to turn 52. 52 with a 7-year-old. And Sarah is 56 with a 16 and 19-year old. Sarah talks about how she’s engineered a simpler holiday season for herself. Doing fewer things, and more fun things than obligation things. It also involved Planning. Sarah actually went to the beach over the weekend, which was super fun! During the holidays! Unheard of in her past life. Bible Study - Menopause Confidential by Dr. Tara Allmen - Chapter 13 - “The Latest Rap About the Pap” This is another slightly confusing subject - like the issue of mammograms - because the guidelines have changed regarding Pap Smears. Turns out you may not need to have the screening done every year anymore. It might be every other year or even once every 3 years. Sarah worries this is confusing and that she won’t remember whether this is her pap year or not? Julia thinks Sarah’s doctors should have the records and that she doesn’t need to worry about remembering. Good point. Anyway, check with your own medical professional. And there was some very interesting info about HPV, which is the cause of cervical cancer. Fascinating to read! Also - fascinating factoid: in the early 1900’s Cervical Cancer was the number one killer of American women! But no more. Chapter 14 - “Sticks and Stones Can Break Your Bones” Not such a News Flash, but Menopausal women are at high risk for osteoporosis - woo-hoo aren’t we lucky????? (Not) Why? Because of Estrogen and the lack thereof… Good old estrogen! The bad news is you can’t reverse bone loss or density, but you can maintain what you have as you enter menopause, according to this chapter. We note the dancer/gymnast conundrum that they are so slender and strong, but because they may not menstruate for those years and the lack of estrogen will come back to harm them. Eat your calcium-rich foods, like KALE. And some obvious and possibly silly advice - Don’t Fall. Falling can be a death sentence for some people, because they may never recover. Sarah felt this chapter really made her sit up (straight) and take notice. Chapter 15 - “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” This is all about Heart Health - a staggering number of American women will die every year from heart disease - 400,000! We note that the Dr. puts us all into one of three categories of risk. All of us. Meaning everyone has some level of risk, which is frightening. Either the “Ideal Risk” category, the “At Risk” category, and the “High Risk” category. Being overweight is one of the risk factors, which both Sarah and Julia deal with. Sarah also has high-ish cholesterol. We know we’ll feel better with better fitness, so it’s an important goal for us. We can make changes in some of our risk factors, people! No more excuses! And the Dr. notes the American Heart Association has certain target numbers we need to hit for exercise. As well as the dietary guidelines, of course! Consult your physician regarding the use of aspirin. And regarding the use of Hormone Replacement Therapy for heart disease prevention. It sounds tricky to know whether it would help you or not and you’ll need to have that conversation. And every woman is different. NO HOT FLASHES for us this week.

Watch Video | Listen to the AudioJUDY WOODRUFF: Turning a corner, after decades of health warnings, cigarette sales have fallen sharply in the United States and Europe, but multinational tobacco corporations are targeting huge new markets in the developing world, including countries in Asia. In a report produced with Global Health Frontiers, Hari Sreenivasan explains that in the Philippines, anti-smoking activists are now pushing back. ACTIVISTS: We want the pictures now! Pictures save lives! HARI SREENIVASAN: On the streets in Manila, demonstrators march against tobacco. ACTIVIST: We want to make our voices heard. HARI SREENIVASAN: Their cause is supported by the medical profession here. DR. TONY LEACHON, Philippine College of Physicians: Smoking’s the number one killer in the Philippines. HARI SREENIVASAN: Dr. Tony Leachon is the president of the Philippine College of Physicians. DR. TONY LEACHON: For the young Filipinos, smoking is considered a macho image for men. SMOKER: I know it’s bad — it’s bad for our health, but this is to relax myself out from work. RACHEL ROSARIO, Philippine Cancer Society: Culturally, smoking seems to be an accepted mode of socialization, an accepted mode of relaxation. HARI SREENIVASAN: Rachel Rosario is with the Philippine Cancer Society. RACHEL ROSARIO: There is that vision of holding a cigarette and smoking with makeup — it seems to be something that we have to fight against. SMOKER: It’s really hard to kick the habit. I try to lessen it down, cut it, but then you always have that urge. HARI SREENIVASAN: The fight against smoking here won a major victory four years ago when the Philippine Congress passed what is called the “Sin Tax Law”, imposing a tax that effectively doubled the price of cigarettes. MAN (through translator): It's expensive. It's five pesos a stick. SMOKER (through translator): The effect on me is I'm smoking less. It's more expensive. SMOKER: I used to be a pack a day, now I'm like half. HARI SREENIVASAN: Dr. Maria Encarnita Limpin leads the framework convention on Tobacco Control Alliance Philippines. DR. ENCARNITA BLANCO-LIMPIN, Framework Convention on Tobacco Control Alliance: From 1990 to 2008, the rate of smoking in the country has never really gone below 30 percent. The latest survey that we did in the country showed dramatic drop in the prevalence rate of smoking. This time, it is going down from above 31 percent to 25 percent. That’s a big deduction. HARI SREENIVASAN: Private held leaders say a major reason why the sin tax law was passed was the grassroots campaign organized by cancer survivor Emer Roxas. EMER ROJAS, Cancer Survivor: I started smoke can at the age of 17. And at the age of 44, I got stage 4 throat cancer, and that was 12 years ago. They removed my vocal cords so that the cancer would go away. HARI SREENIVASAN: Before cancer, Rojas was a successful engineer, businessman and radio broadcaster. ERIKA ROJAS, Emer’s Daughter: I still remember that voice when he was singing. Before, he used to sing a lot whenever there was a birthday party. EMER’S WIFE: He loves to sing “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.” EMER ROJAS: That’s my favorite song. EMER’S WIFE: Yes, I know. HARI SREENIVASAN: Rojas says he felt he was given a second life, and he decided he would commit his life to making people aware of what happened to him because of smoking, and his family has joined him. ACTIVIST: All of us in the family, we’re volunteers. ACTIVIST: I want to save lives of other people. I don't want for them to experience what we experience with Emer. HARI SREENIVASAN: With rallies, speeches, and messaging on radio and television, Rojas developed the new voice association as a powerful advocate against smoking, especially to protect children. DR. ENCARNITA BLANCO-LIMPIN: All of the strategies of the tobacco companies, particularly their advertising strategy. They're all geared to hook the young children into starting smoking at an earlier age. And since of the adults would actually grow old and eventually die. And therefore, they need new market. ACTIVIST: The children agree that cigarette smoking is really bad, right, kids? Cigarette smoking is bad. STUDENTS: Cigarette smoking is bad. HARI SREENIVASAN: Another new law, following examples in other countries, requires health warnings and graphic pictures on cigarette packaging. DR. TONY LEACHON: The graphic health warnings have been helpful in other countries, and basically we’re going to use this for the young population, of course, to women as well. SMOKER: I've been to some airports and they do sell those packs with pictures of throat cancer, your lungs are all wrecked up, I guess it made you think a bit, but at the end of the day, I'm, like, where’s my pack of cigarettes? ACTIVIST: Pictures save lives! HARI SREENIVASAN: After months of delay, and rallies like this, the law requiring graphic health warnings is now in effect. But public health advocates say they’ve not yet won the war against tobacco. Millions of Filipinos still face lifelong addiction, and the benefits from the sin tax and graphic warnings won’t be clearly evident for decades. ACTIVIST: One, two, three — STUDENTS: Do not smoke! ACTIVIST: Very good! HARI SREENIVASAN: For the “PBS NewsHour”, I'm Hari Sreenivasan. MAN (through translator): It’s expensive. It’s five pesos a stick. SMOKER (through translator): The effect on me is I’m smoking less. It’s more expensive. SMOKER: I used to be a pack a day, now I’m like half. I don’t want for them to experience what we experience with Emer. They’re all geared to hook the young children into starting smoking at an earlier age. SMOKER: I’ve been to some airports and they do sell those packs with pictures of throat cancer, your lungs are all wrecked up, I guess it made you think a bit, but at the end of the day, I’m, like, where’s my pack of cigarettes? ACTIVIST: Pictures save lives! HARI SREENIVASAN: After months of delay, and rallies like this, the law requiring graphic health warnings is now in effect. But public health advocates say they’ve not yet won the war against tobacco. Millions of Filipinos still face lifelong addiction, and the benefits from the sin tax and graphic warnings won’t be clearly evident for decades. ACTIVIST: One, two, three — STUDENTS: Do not smoke! ACTIVIST: Very good! HARI SREENIVASAN: For the “PBS NewsHour”, I’m Hari Sreenivasan.
