In this episode, we slice deep into The Slasher Era—from its gruesome birth in the late ’70s to its bloody reign through the ’80s, and why it’s legacy still haunts pop culture today. We break down the rise and fall of the slasher sub-genre, the evolution of legendary villains like Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers, […] The post Movies don’t create psychos. The slasher series without a slasher returns for its sixth instalment, fourteen years after we last saw it. Where Halloween gave us Michael Myers, Friday the 13th, Jason Voorhees, and A Nightmare on Elm Street, Freddy Krueger, Final Destination made death the villain - perhaps more accurately, Death, but we never see a cloaked man wielding a scythe. Where the figure of the slasher killer could, in principle, be evaded and even beaten, Final Destination's Death, non-corporeal and omnipresent, carries a key threat of inevitability. Nobody escapes Death. In each Final Destination film, one character's premonition of catastrophe gives them the chance to save themselves and others from death, but Death won't take being cheated lying down, and sets its sights on pursuing its near-victims to the graves they're currently avoiding. How? Through elaborate, Rube Goldberg-esque accidents, of course. We discuss the ways in which Final Destination Bloodlines' set pieces work, how they focus on small moments and individual stories, and how they're a nightmare for the naturally anxious. José isn't shy of expressing his dislike of the film; Mike, the opposite, and he does his best to explain the appeal of watching so many people perish in such gruesome ways. We even ask whether a slasher series could be made with which José would see eye to eye, and imagine what it might look like. Recorded on 20th May 2025.

Synopsis Until Dawn follows Clover and her group of friends as they travel the country following her missing sister Melanie's trail. After meeting a kind old man at a gas station who points them in the right direction, the crew finds themselves waiting out a rainstorm in a spooky abandoned motel. Clover is desperate to find her sister, and clues within the building lead her to think that Melanie was here. All seems to be going according to plan until disaster strikes and our young hip protagonists are plunged into a life-or-death fight with a masked maniac Michael Myers wanna be. Review of Until Dawn I did not know that this was a movie adapting a video game until the movie started with the PlayStation Logo. Having not seen the trailer and bringing zero experience playing Until Dawn into my viewing experience, I think I was set up perfectly. The premise of the movie, which I'm going to spoil now so if you don't want to know skip this part but I assume it gives this away in the trailer and game, is that people who enter the motel are stuck in some sort of hellish time warp, causing them to relive their deaths over and over. The movie did a great job of setting up the characters in the beginning and I was starting to feel very invested in their relationships when suddenly every character except for Clover was killed within 5 minutes. I was baffled and about ready to give this movie a very low score for undermining its own character development, when suddenly I was introduced to the time warp aspect and it all finally made sense. Its a really fun idea, and it has the built-in advantage of being able to pack in lots of fun and gory death scenes without losing its main cast or requiring a ridiculous amount of characters. I felt that the acting was pretty good, the story was far more filled out than most video game movies are, and the themes that emerged towards the end were satisfying. The movie suffers from some of the same things other video game movies like Silent Hill suffer from, such as needing to introduce all of the iconic bad guys without having the time to tell the audience who or what they are. Who is this masked killer? Don't worry about it. He's just evil. Who is this witch? Don't think too hard. She's just one of the bad guys. I enjoyed this movie quite a lot more than I expected to, but it is still far from a perfect film. Score 8/10
This week on Born to Watch, we dive into the horror landmark that changed the game: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974). Brutal, raw, and grimy in a way that still shocks today, this episode sees Whitey and Damo take on one of the most infamous cult classics ever made, with Morgz and Gow hilariously "noping out" after the first five minutes.Despite its terrifying reputation, the team quickly notes something surprising: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre isn't about gore, it's about dread. Director Tobe Hooper weaponises your imagination with low-budget ingenuity, turning rural Texas into a sweat-drenched nightmare of implied violence, claustrophobia, and screaming madness.Whitey and Damo break down how the film uses its documentary-style visuals to make you feel like you're inside the nightmare. They discuss the iconic opening narration, the genius use of real animal sounds in place of a traditional soundtrack, and the deeply uncomfortable "dinner scene," which remains one of the most disturbing sequences ever filmed. The episode also explores the surprising lack of blood, the history of censorship surrounding the movie (which was banned for decades in the UK!), and why Leatherface, chainsaw-wielding, mask-wearing, and alarmingly agile, became an instant horror icon. There's serious appreciation for how Texas Chainsaw influenced Evil Dead, Seven, Pulp Fiction, and even the style of Star Wars' opening crawl.Of course, this wouldn't be Born to Watch without a few detours:Franklin and his endless whining take a brutal roasting, and deservedly so.Picking up hitchhikers is a bad move. Hitchhikers carrying photos of slaughtered cows—extra bad move."Don't go in the house, mate" becomes the ultimate horror PSA.Damo tells the all-time story of accidentally picking up hitchhikers while having "Northern Beaches Gay Board Riders" accidentally stuck to his car door. The cast of unknowns stayed unknown, most fading into cult obscurity. But the legacy of the film is undeniable, and the team argues that it might be the rawest and most authentic horror movie ever made.IN THIS EPISODE:Why a minimal budget made Texas Chainsaw even scarier. The genius of Tobe Hooper's “no soundtrack” approach. How Sally Hardesty became the prototype for the Final Girl trope. That horrifying Grandpa scene and why it still messes us up.Whether Leatherface could qualify as CrossFit's most terrifying champion. It's loud, it's grimy, it's uncomfortable, and it's a horror masterclass that still hits like a hammer to the skull.Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your movie fixes!Join the conversation:Is The Texas Chainsaw Massacre the most disturbing horror film ever made? Some love it, others hate it. Halloween 3: Season of the Witch is controversial for some fans for its lack of their favorite slasher, Michael Myers. But this film is it's own beast! Involving robots, halloween masks and dark magic! SO give us a listen and tell us what you think about this installment of the Halloween Franchise!
Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay head to the hardware store to grab supplies and take out baddies as they talk about 'The Equalizer.' Andy kicks it off by reminiscing about the time he was apprehended at a hardware store for buying supplies that made employees very suspicious. Then the fellas talk about one of the better action films of the 2010s, which was helped by starring perhaps the coolest mofo on the planet, Denzel Washington. The guys discuss how Denzel goes full Michael Myers-death merchant mode as he wreaks havoc on the bad guys 'Home Alone' style as he uses all the hardware store tools at his disposal. That leads to many gnarly deaths, including multiple nail gun related homicides. Along the way, Andy and Bombay laugh about meeting loons in diners, and how the people in Denzel's orbit in this flick are cursed with bad luck, but luckily meet a benevolent superhero. This movie often gets mistaken for the morass of John Wick clones that came along, but Antoine Fuqua's franchise actually hit theaters before everyone's favorite retired assassin. Make sure you listen to the end to get some great recs to pair with this movie, and whatever you do don't befriend any annoyingly whiny overweight security guards at work.

Russell Binder, the IP accelerator behind Five Nights at Freddy's, Twilight, and The Hunger Games, reveals how gaming communities are reshaping Hollywood's and gamings approach to franchise building. In this conversation, Russell Binder, founder of Stryker Entertainment, shares his journey from representing comic book creators to building billion-dollar transmedia franchises. With 30+ years of experience developing IPs like Five Nights at Freddy's, Twilight Saga, and Angry Birds, Russell provides unprecedented insights into how gaming communities are transforming Hollywood and gaming's approach to storytelling, merchandising and entertainment."When I started in the business, there were the five families, Warner's, Disney, Universal, Sony, and Paramount, and they were generally the gatekeepers of the big IPs," Russell explains. He reveals the strategies behind turning Five Nights at Freddy's from an indie game to a global phenomenon through community cultivation: "The virality of these jump scares and watching people play this game introduced this property to a massive social audience across YouTube, across Instagram... you didn't have to play the game to get excited about Five Nights at Freddy's."Russell also shares candid stories about working with industry legends: "If you ask me what I love about my job, as much as I love movies, as much as I love video games, the people I've had the pleasure to work with, Steven Spielberg, Sean Levy, Guillermo del Toro, like some of the coolest storytellers and filmmakers..." His insights on what makes an IP truly transferable are invaluable: "If you look at what works in horror, it's iconic. It's Freddie, Jason, Michael Myers in the film business. In gaming, Five Nights at Freddy's and Poppy and Bendy... Iconic characters that translate multi-directionally."Timestamps:00:00 Introduction to Russell Binder and Striker Entertainment05:32 The Twilight Saga 18:17 Transitioning to Video Games: Angry Birds and Five Nights at Freddy's25:43 Future of Transmedia and Cross-Platform Content34:27 The Challenges of Transmedia Projects34:54 Disney's Transmedia Mastery35:17 Amazon's Potential in Transmedia36:47 The Evolution of Gaming and Hollywood37:29 Criteria for Successful Transmedia Ventures40:15 High on Life: A Transmedia Success Story41:36 The Future of Transmedia Adaptations51:09: Working with Steven Spielberg 59:42 The Future of Transmedia and EntertainmentGuest Biography:Russell Binder is the founder of Stryker Entertainment, an IP accelerator specialising in transmedia development, licensing, and production. Is HALLOWEEN: RESURRECTION the worst entry in the franchise? Or is it merely the most inconsequential? We can't really quote any of Busta Rhymes' iconic HALLOWEEN: RESURRECTION lines because they could get this blurb censored. But trust us, they are just one of the many reasons to celebrate Michael Myers' foray into reality TV. Critics, boring as they can be, slapped a 10% Tomatometer score on the movie, not that any true fan cares. Listen to Alex & Julio as they argue against that rating and add one more step to their Haddonfield Nights journey!TIMELINE00:01:24 Halloween: Resurrection00:13:34 Contrarians Corner- Wanna know how we really feel about HALLOWEEN: RESURRECTION? The horror genre occupies an important moment in our romantic relationship. We started dating nearly eighteen years ago. Our earliest outings were at the theater, watching one mediocre to terrible horror film after the other. As you'll hear in this week's episode, those violent excursions caused us to sharpen our ideas of who we are. Gosh, we sure could have used The Matron back then. Comic creators David Bowles, Drew Edwards, and Monica Gallagher join us to discuss their new slasher comic, The Matron. It's a distinct, bloody trip across multiple generations. While it began as a thought experiment related to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, it quickly transformed into a rich, thoughtful exercise in how the slasher story can contain and process profound human anxiety. Fifty years after her great-great-grandmother slaughtered her way into infamy, Roz desperately wants to find space on this planet away from her family's murderous past. Mostly in the arms of her girlfriend, Samantha. However, as winter sweeps across the Texas town of Ascuas, celebrations centered around the original Matron's killings begin. As do a new set of killings. The Matron allowed us to discover our history with the slasher and our love for it. While these musings tend to occur around the Halloween season, the first two months of 2025 have proved to be the perfect moment to seek solace in characters like The Matron, Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, and other masked maniacs. The Matron is currently seeking funding via Kickstarter. As of this writing, they have sixteen days left on the campaign. CLICK HERE to explore this unique slasher further. True to the original film but filled with deeper, darker layers, this book explores a chilling supernatural origin for Michael Myers, weaving ancient Druid lore and the eerie roots of Halloween itself into the fabric of his story. With scenes even more provocative than the film, I'll be sharing a carefully edited version that captures the terror and suspense of this horror gem—without pushing the limits of decency.CHAPTERS & TIME STAMPS (All Times Approximate)…00:00:00.000 = Disclaimer and Show Open00:03:37.276 = Prologue00:14:22.524 = Chapter 0100:25:05.703 = Chapter 0200:36:56.609 = Chapter 0300:46:04.639 = Chapter 0401:06:59.000 = Chapter 0501:19:51.077 = Chapter 0601:35:07.275 = Chapter 0701:41:50.178 = Chapter 0802:16:24.382 = Chapter 0902:21:54.378 = Chapter 1002:53:03.716 = Chapter 1103:11:07.134 = Chapter 1203:29:58.674 = Chapter 1303:54:40.092 = Chapter 1404:16:24.504 = Chapter 1504:44:55.884 = Show CloseSOURCES AND REFERENCES FROM THE EPISODE…BOOK: “Halloween” the movie novelization by Curtis Richards: https://amzn.to/3NM2TCR, https://amzn.to/3UTkP2DMUSIC: “The Shape” by White Bat Audio: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/WhiteBatAudioWeird Darkness theme by Alibi Music Library. = = = = =(Over time links seen above may become invalid, disappear, or have different content.
