(Come To The Table 1996).

This week on the show, we're talking about Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire's score by Dario Marianelli, lack of pop tracks, and then chatting a lot about how the lore and magic of the live-action Ghostbusters world is expanded by this film. First up, Troy and Chris walk through some of their favorite score cues and explore some of the new cues heard in the film. There's a lot of new avenues explored and great ways of furthering Elmer Bernstein's original music throughout. Then, the boys talk about Nadeem's character in the film and what doors he opens moving forward, which then naturally turns to an existential discussion where we talk about what it means to become one with the fabric of the universe. Ready?

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is a 2024 American supernatural comedy film directed by Gil Kenan from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jason Reitman. It is the sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) and the fifth film in the Ghostbusters franchise. The film stars Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Celeste O'Connor, and Logan Kim reprising their roles from Afterlife, alongside Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and William Atherton reprising their characters from the earlier films. Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, Emily Alyn Lind, and James Acaster also join the cast. Set two years after the events of Afterlife, the veteran Ghostbusters must join forces with their new recruits to save the world in New York City from a death-chilling god who seeks to build a spectral army. Following the success of Afterlife, Sony Pictures announced the sequel in April 2022, with Reitman returning as director. Co-writer and executive producer Kenan later took over as director from Reitman that December, with the latter staying on as a co-writer and co-producer. That same month, Rudd, Coon, Grace, Wolfhard, O'Connor, Kim, Murray, Aykroyd, Hudson, Potts, and Atherton were all confirmed to reprise their roles. New cast members including Nanjiani, Oswalt, Lind, and Acaster were announced in March 2023, with principal photography commencing that month and wrapping in June. Dario Marianelli was hired to compose and conduct the film's score, replacing Afterlife composer Rob Simonsen. This is the first film in the Ghostbusters franchise to be released following the death of the franchise's co-creator and Jason Reitman's father Ivan Reitman, who posthumously receives credit as a producer alongside his son and Jason Blumenfeld. Additionally, the film is dedicated to Ivan's memory and celebrates the 40th anniversary of the first film. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire had its world premiere at the AMC 13 Theater at Lincoln Square in New York City on March 14, 2024, and was released in the United States on March 22, by Sony Pictures Releasing under its Columbia Pictures label. The film received mixed reviews from critics --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/popcorn-junkies/message

Hello and welcome back to the podcast! In this episode, prepare to be transformed as I continue my mini-series entitled “TV Goes To The Movies” and now explore the music for THE TRANSFORMERS franchise. As before, my focus is musically what was or was not carried over from the television episodes of a particular series to its respective theatrical feature, such as the main TV theme or scoring style. During its near 40 year history, from the original 1984 syndicated cartoon series, to the animated and live action movies, the Japanese-only series and more, music for the THE TRANSFORMERS has been remarkably varied. The vocal and score tracks have often reflected current or trendy musical approaches, leading to elements of lush symphonic strains, synth pop, hard rock and jazzy funk all being heard in various incarnations. Now, hold on to your crankshafts and let's transform and roll out! Title playtime index: Intro - 00:00:00 THE TRANSFORMERS (US, 1984 cartoon series, theme by Anne Bryant & Ford Kinder, score by Johnny Douglas and Robert J. To mark a milestone birthday and celebrate a new chapter in his relationship with the label, French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet was given “carte blanche” by the Decca classical label to choose personal music that he has never recorded before—a selection that reflects on the people and pieces that have impacted his life as an artist while expanding his already diverse repertoire in new directions. Mr. Thibaudet's choices on his disc each have a unique story, and he shares the best with host John Pitman in the recorded conversation, which includes brief musical samples. Some pieces were specially arranged for the pianist, such as “Pride and Prejudice” by Dario Marianelli; others arranged by Thibaudet's teachers (Elgar's Salut d'amour one example); and still others were arranged by the pianist himself, including an astounding piano version of Barber's Adagio. Thibaudet's recording is as much a gift to us as it is to himself and will enhance playlists for years to come.

Jean-Yves Thibaudet – Carte Blanche (Decca) Jump to giveaway form French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet celebrated his 60th birthday with a trip to Hawaii in September. He also marked the occasion with the release of his new recording, Carte Blanche. “This was an album where I was given literally carte blanche,” Thibaudet said. “I could choose whatever. It might not have happened without the pandemic, and I did it with the greatest love and joy. I had such a good time doing it. The variety and choice of pieces on this album shows my personality.” The recording opens with the suite from Pride and Prejudice, and it features important moments. How did you decide which ones to highlight? “This is something I did with Dario Marianelli. He is an extraordinary composer, and that score is very important and special in my life. That is why I wanted it not only to be on the record, but also start it. “That piece has opened many doors in my life. It has reached so many people in the world, and I cannot tell you how many people still go to my concerts because of it. I also have people coming to me at the end of the concert to say hi and tell me that that was their first concert. They would say, ‘I just came because I saw your name and your the guy from Pride and Prejudice. I love that score so much.'” Why did you choose The Lady and the Nightingale, by Enrique Granados, to honor Spanish pianist Alicia de Larrocha? “She owned that repertoire completely. It's such beautiful music. The chords are so wonderful. I love the effects of trills mimicking birds. I think it's really beautiful and fun to play. I had to do something from Larrocha because I have such great admiration for her.” Did you dedicate a piece to Renée Fleming? “My playing is in honor of her, because I've learned so much as a an artist from Fleming. It has been the greatest lesson playing with all the other wonderful singers. She has beautiful control of breathing, the legato and of phrasing. “There is a little story to one of the pieces — my transcription of ‘When You Wish Upon a Star' from Disney's Pinocchio. We actually did a PBS program for New Year's Eve, United in Song: The Resilience of American People. She chose to do ‘When You Wish Upon a Star,' which has the most touching and beautiful theme. “I just adore that piece so much. I was thinking, ‘God, I need to play it just for my own pleasure.' I started incorporating, yet again, the singing line into the piano. I was making progress and I finally came up with the arrangement on this album. It gave me so much joy that I wanted to share it, and that certainly is a special gift for Fleming.” Watch now To hear the rest of my conversation, click on the extended interview above, or download the extended podcast on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. Original broadcast date January 24, 2019. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2019/01/binary-system-podcast-161-bumblebee-and-other-transformers-topics/ It sure doesn't happen very often: both the East and West Coast branches of Binary System actually saw a movie before it left the theaters. But it was a Transformers movie, and the reviews were great, so how could they NOT go see it? Spoilers ahoy! Listen in as they break down everything they loved (and a couple teeny tiny things they didn't) about Bumblebee. After that they segued into...more Transformers stuff, including the Transformers The Movie mini-documentary that Kathryn recommends, IDW's Transformers: Historia, and, you know, all the other IDW Transformers books that they loved. This week's outro music is a clip from the Bumblebee score by Dario Marianelli which, seriously, if it's one thing we loved about the Michael Bay movies it was the score by Steve Jablonsky, but Marianelli did a hell of a job with the music in Bumblebee. https://www.amazon.com/Bumblebee-Motion-Picture-Score-Marianelli/dp/B07L46D6VY The mini-documentary Kathryn mentioned is called Really That Good - Transformers: The Movie (1986), and it takes a very in-depth look at how something that was basically a series of toy commercials leading to a ninety-minute toy commercial ended up being so meaningful to an entire generation of children. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9iab0z6Kyg The Youtuber who talks about The Male Gaze and how it applies to the Michael Bay Transformers movie franchise is Lindsay Ellis https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCG1h-Wqjtwz7uUANw6gazRw, and her whole Transformers Film Studies series is really, really good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRXI__Wixas&list=PLJGOq3JclTH8J73o2Z4VMaSYZDNG3xeZ7 Correction: We referred to the main character in Michael Bay's first Transformers movie as Spike. His name was actually Sam. We got it wrong because we don't actually care.
Internationally-renowned composer Anne Boyd is in conversation with composer Thomas Metcalf, discussing her life and music ahead of a performance of her String Quartet No. 2 ’Play on the Water’ later this year. This is part of the TORCH project ‘Pixelating the River’: Engagement with Contemporary Music through Graphical Inputs, played by the Kreutzer Quartet, alongside a new work by Thomas Metcalf. Professor Anne Boyd AM is one of Australia’s most distinguished composers and music educators. Her undergraduate studies were in the Department of Music at the University of Sydney, where Peter Sculthorpe was her earliest and most influential composition teacher. The award of a Commonwealth Scholarship enabled her to undertake a PhD in composition at the University of York (1969-72), where her supervisors were Wilfrid Mellers and Bernard Rands. In 1990, Boyd became the first Australian (and the first woman) to be appointed Professor of Music at the University of Sydney. Before this, she was the Foundation Head of the Department of Music at the University of Hong Kong (1981–90) and taught at the University of Sussex (1972–77). The hallmarks of her musical style are its transparency, gentleness and delicacy, attributes which reflect her long involvement with Asian traditions, especially those of Japan and Indonesia. Two solo CDs of her music are Meditations on a Chinese Character (ABC Classics, 1997) and Crossing a Bridge of Dreams (Tall Poppies, 2000). Professor Boyd was honoured with an AM in the Order of Australia in 1996, an Honorary Doctorate from the University of York in 2003, the Distinguished Services to Australian Music Award at the APRA-AMC Classical Music Awards in 2005 and the 2014 Sir Bernard Heinz Award for service to music in Australia. Biography taken from Faber Music, 2021 Thomas Metcalf is a composer and DPhil candidate in Music at Oxford University (Worcester College), where he is researching the transformation of graphical spaces into determinately–notated music – focusing on a range of composers in the 20th and 21st centuries. His research has been recognised in the UK and internationally, appearing in peer-reviewed journals as well as diverse conference settings in Europe. Beginning his composition training with Robert Saxton at Oxford in October 2014, Thomas subsequently achieved a first–class BA in Music and an MSt in Composition with distinction as the Ogilvie–Thompson Scholar of Worcester College. Since January 2020, Thomas has studied with Kenneth Hesketh, focusing specifically on graphical methods of determinate composition, a process that is present in much of Hesketh’s recent work. Thomas’s works have been performed by a variety of ensembles, such as the ANIMA Collective, BBC Singers, Christ Church Cathedral Choir, GBSR Duo, Oxford Philharmonic, St. Pancras Parish Church Choir, and the Villiers Quartet. He has worked with composers such as Judith Weir, Michael Zev Gordon, Henning Kraggerud, and Dario Marianelli. He has also collaborated with festivals such as Oxford Lieder Festival (2018), Oxford Chamber Music Festival (2019), and the Vale of Glamorgan Festival (as part of the Peter Reynolds Composers Studio) (2020).

With the cinematic release of a new telling of the classic Frances Hodgson Burnett children’s book The Secret Garden, featuring a score by Dario Marianelli, Matthew Sweet looks at this and other music for secret worlds in film. From the fantasy worlds of Lewis Carroll's Wonderland and C.S Lewis's Narnia, to the dinosaur ridden terrains of Jurassic Park and the Valley of Gwangi, the mind of John Malkovich, and the labyrinth of Pan. Our classic score is Dmitri Tiomkin's music evoking the mystical utopia of Shangri-la in Frank Capra's Lost Horizon.

We continue our journey of catching up on movies released in 2018 by driving down to 1987's California for a look at the Transformers spinoff film, "Bumblebee". With Disney buying 20 Century Fox, a new rumour has emerged confirming that all Marvel films in development at Fox will be cancelled going forward. Is this a good idea of not? After the major disappointment that was "Transformers: The Last Knight", it seemed as though all hope was lost for this Cybertronian franchise. However, with well defined characters, well shot action scenes, and some nostalgic storytelling, it seems the little Volkswagon Beetle that could has brought new life into this franchise. To avoid SPOILERS for "Bumblebee", please skip over 33:18-48:26 of the episode. Music and audio from "Bumblebee" is the property of Dario Marianelli, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Tom DeSanto, Don Murphy, Michael Bay, Mark Vahradian, Allspark Pictures, Tencent Pictures, di Bonaventura Pictures, and Bay Films. Marking the centenary of the Armistice, Tom Service talks to three composers writing music in response to war: Mira Calix on her sound installation at the Tower of London, 'Beyond the Deepening Shadows' featuring music for voices performed by Solomon's Knot; Dario Marianelli on 'The Unknown Soldier' at the Royal Ballet; and David Lang on ‘Memorial Ground’, originally written for the centenary of the Battle of the Somme in 2016. Tom travels to Paris and joins Jean Rondeau at the harpsichord to delve into the music of French composer Francois Couperin, 350 years after his birth, and talks to musicologist Theodora Psychoyou about the vast range and colour of his keyboard works. Composer, writer and singer Kerry Andrew discusses a new piece she's written for the Ligeti Quartet inspired by her experience with tinnitus and talks to clinical audiologist Rekesh Patel about living with the condition. And Santanu Das sheds light on the role of music in the Indian war experience as highlighted in his new book, 'India, Empire, and First World War Culture', including a folk song reconstructed and performed by Jasdeep Singh and Amanroop Kaur.
One of the catalysts to the composition on my new album Époques was a 2 weeks retreat in Suffolk last year, the change of environment and soundscape, away from inner city manmade noises. Many of the pieces featured in this mix were inspired by nature in an abstract or descriptive way. It is easy to sense the heatherlands, rivers and other natural phenomena at the source of the music. Starting with what has now become a classic, John Cage's In A Landscape, and followed by Dario Marianelli's cue from the movie Jane Eyre, both for its romantic expressive beauty, but also for its relationship to the writings of the Brontë sisters, for whom open landscapes and moorlands were such an important source of inspiration, the mix meanders through richly layered works by composers such as Eliane Radigue, Richard Skelton and Claire M Singer. I would suggest listening to this music while on a walk in the countryside or seaside, keeping the volume gentle enough for the sounds of your environment to come in and blend with the drones or act as a counterpoint to Hans Otte‘s Book of Sounds. For a more detailed description, full track listing and more information about this mix, please visit headphonecommute.com

Despite being a thoroughly humble and unassuming sort, Joe Wright has led quite the life. From drinking in the pub as a youngster with Kathy Burke to creating live visuals for The Chemical Brothers, he's long held ties to key players in British culture. Not that he's become a director of great repute on anything other than merit - as evidenced by his latest movie, Darkest Hour. Telling the story of Winston Churchill's early days as Prime Minister during World War II, Darkest Hour revolves around an extraordinary central performance from Gary Oldman, which has already landed him a Golden Globe. But the brilliance of this film is about so much more than that - thanks in no small part to Joe's all-encompassing vision. Darkest Hour is up for a whopping nine awards at the EE BAFTAs. As well as Gary's inevitable nomination, these include Best Film and, appropriately enough for our purposes, Best Music for Dario Marianelli. On Joe's instruction, Dario's score was inspired by the modernist movement of the 50s and 60s, and specifically a more recent work called Hammers by contemporary German composer Nils Frahm.

We've already spoken to one legendary British producer on this show in the shape of Stephen Woolley. Now it's the turn of David Heyman. Like Stephen, David's CV is enviable. As well as producing all the of Harry Potter films and spin-off Fantastic Beasts, he's also the man behind The Light Between Oceans, Testament Of Youth and Gravity among many, many other celebrated movies. And as we'll discover, music very much falls under his remit. The list of composers David has worked with is mighty impressive, from John Williams and James Newton Howard to Steven Price, Max Richter and Dario Marianelli, who scored his latest project, the delightful Paddington 2. Perhaps surprisingly, David loves hip-hop, which informed his first movie as a producer, Juice, the 1992 thriller starring late rapper Tupac Shakur. And given that we kick off by playing tracks and a clip from the film, we should warn you that there's inevitably a fair bit of choice language in this episode ...

Scott Carelli stops by to partake in a chat about Possession, Mystery Team and My Bloody Valentine 3D. This episode is so massive, it had to be broken up into three sections!00:02:57 - Now that John has left Milk Carton TV, he and Scott briefly discuss a new podcast they're involved in, "Movie Night with Geekshow". This leads to talk of really bad films and the possible value in trying to review them as such.00:08:42 - John gives his thoughts on the supernatural drama Possession, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and Lee Pace. The film's rocky distribution history is also discussed, as well as comparisons between the theatrical poster and the DVD box art.00:21:17 - We go absolutely silly over Mystery Team, the first feature film from Derrick Comedy.00:42:20 - Unfortunately, John also watched the remake of My Bloody Valentine. The greatness of Tom Atkins and Jensen Ackles aside, most of what gets discussed here is the film's distracting, TV-like picture quality. Scott also brings up the merits of 3D with genre films like this.00:48:25 - The works of Todd Farmer and Patrick Lussier are discussed, closing out the episode as John argues in favor of the original Halloween III: Season Of The Witch. The following artists can be heard in this episode:The Mystery Team, Childish Bambino (Donald Glover), Michael Jackson, Andreas Alfredsson & Christian Sandquist & The Stiff Twins, Stars, Dario Marianelli, Jamin Winans, The Ting Tings, Kasabian, Kate Nash, Angels & Airwaves, A Perfect Circle, John Carpenter & Alan Howarth and Donovan.
