In Summer 1983, Max Jones jumped on a strange new contraption called a #mountainbike and went looking for trails to ride around #laketahoe. There wasn't really any singletrack until he discovered an abandoned flume line running high above the east shore of the lake. After a few failed attempts, Max finally uncovered the overgrown track, taking five hours to “ride” only four miles, fighting through brush and hundreds of downed trees. For the rest that summer, Max cleared the trail with nothing more than hand tools and dogged determination. 40 years later, thanks to Max's efforts, the Marlette Flume Trail has become the most scenic trail in the world and a gem of recreation in Lake Tahoe. Max and his wife Patti have built a life and career around the Flume Trail, promoting the Great Flume Race for more than a decade, starting Flume Trail Bikes to shuttle visitors and opening Tunnel Creek Café to feed them at the end of the adventure. This is the story of Max Jones, a Mountain Bike Hall of Fame inductee, the resurrector of the Flume Trail and an early pioneer of ecotourism in Lake Tahoe. 1:40 – PowBot gets a new vanity license plate – MRDRPOW – on his murdered out Crosstrek. 3:45 – Experiencing technical difficulties with our podcast player while interviewing Max Jones.5:20 – Celebrating the 40th anniversary of Max Jones reopening the Marlette Flume Trail. 10:00 – The first “winter storm” on September 1; a Pacific Low coming off the ocean!11:30 – Rose to Toads TAMBA ride is going to get snow Labor Day weekend. 13:20 – SENDY Send of the Week – 11 year anniversary of Joyce Beckering's passing – Tom's mom. The Germans weren't miners, they were ranchers, so they raised cattle and fed the miners.29:30 – Max transitions from rock climbing to mountain biking, and picks up Ritchey as a sponsor and started racing.35:00 – How Max originally discovered the Flume Trail. 41:00 – Helicoptering all the old aluminum flume pipe off the trail. 45:30 – The Great Flume Race put the Flume Trail on the map for visitors. 47:25 – The spiritual power of Herlan Peak – a leyline from Lake Tahoe to Pyramid Lake.50:30 – Working with the Nevada State Park Ranger Mark Kimbrough in reopening the trail.53:30 – The original purpose of the Flume Trail – created for water in Virginia City during the Comstock Lode silver rush. 58:30 – Max's first summer working on the trail, carrying a chainsaw and falling off the trail.1:03:00 – Max joins the Tahoe Rim Trail Association board representing mountain bikers.1:08:50 – Max started shuttling people in 1999 with Flume Trail Bikes. 1:10:30 – Flume Trail Bikes moves to the old Ponderosa Ranch site at Tunnel Creek and opened the cafe.1:12:40 – Max innovated a form of ecotourism that's been sustainable for Lake Tahoe, shuttling 5,000 to 6,000 people per year, keeping extra cars off local roads.1:15:00 – Flume Trail Bikes might start running a shuttle for Cap to Tahoe trail, and building a new singletrack to Tunnel Creek from Flume Trail. 1:19:00 – Building a life and a career around the Flume Trail.1:21:00 – What does Mind the Track mean to you?
Rev. Timothy Kern, pastor at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Marlette, MI, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Ecclesiastes 5:1-17. Solomon instructs us in the wisdom of guarding our words, both before God in worship and before others. Only when we are quick to listen to God's Word will we know how best to speak before God. As we observe life under the sun, we should not be surprised by injustice and unrighteousness. Comfort is found in realizing that God is higher than all who would abuse their power in this way. Solomon notes once more that seeking after riches is vanity, for we end this life just as naked as we began it. Better than all this is to live with the fear of God for as many days as He gives. “Wisdom for Life Under the Sun” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the book of Ecclesiastes. Solomon's favorite word in Ecclesiastes paints a bleak picture: “Vanity of vanities! All is vanity!” Apart from God, life is nothing but vapor that does not last and can never be grasped. Yet Solomon does not leave us in despair. He shows us that life does have meaning in the faith and fear of God, from whom all things come to us as a gift.

This week Meg & Kylie sat down with Functional Nutritionist Sarah Marlette, who focuses on circadian rhythm regulation in her work. She has her Master of Science in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine. Her philosophy is all about nourishment - not deprivation; she calls it: realistic nutrition. She focuses on creating a flexible routine that allows her to enjoy life while still feeding her cells and nourishing her body, and does the same with each one of her clients. Tools, not rules Sarah has a 21 circadian rhythm reset program to help balance and reset rhythms. This program is group based and led by Sarah. You can connect with Sarah on IG at @nourishthriveglow ! TLDL action steps: 1. Follow Dr Andrew Huberman @hubermanlab on IG for more info on circadian rhythms and their impact on health 2. Circadian rhythms are basically the bodies routines of functioning (i.e. digestion, hormone regulation, heart rate, etc); ideally these functions are on regular schedules or routines, but when those routines become disrupted, they can cause symptoms or even health problems 3. Common circadian disruptors are blue light (yes you scrolling on your phone at night), not enough exposure to sunlight and irratic meal patterns 4. Sarah's recommendations to regulate your circadian rhythms and improve a vast range of health issues (including digestive problems, sleep issues, anxiety or other mental health issues like ADHD- even muscle mass loss (sarcopenia)) include: a) getting morning sunlight (or daytime) exposure within 1 hour of waking up every day; b) delaying caffeine intake and c) limiting scrolling time before/while in bed 5. Heart rate variability can be a great marker for assessing your nervous system functioning as it is closely associated with circadian rhythm regulation --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/curious-women/support

For the past few years, there's been a growing focus and demand that organizations address diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Although there's been numerous studies that have demonstrated how a diverse workforce leads to improved financial performance, productivity, innovation, and overall growth, the numbers of visible minority groups and women in decision-making or leadership roles remains extremely low. So if there's a clear business case to be made for increasing diversity both in the workplace and in leadership circles, why is there still so little traction to address this, especially when so many organizations are struggling to find talent to help their organization achieve their goals. That's what I'll be examining with my guest, Dr. Marlette Jackson, in this episode of my “Leadership Biz Cafe” podcast. Marlette is a researcher, educator, and cross-functional leader with over 8 years' experience building and scaling DEI initiatives. She's also the Global Director of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at Virgin Pulse, where her work involves building processes, policies and programs to attract, develop, and retain the best talent from all backgrounds for Virgin Pulse globally. Over the course of this episode, Marlette and I discuss: What leaders and their organizations need to do to make their diversity and inclusion be more than a feel-good measure. How to change the narrative that supporting more visible minorities and women to move into leadership roles means asking others to give up their opportunities. Why we need to reassess how we understand power in the context of diversity and inclusion. What leaders need to do to encourage visible minorities to access their own power for the mutual benefit of the organization and employees. How diversity and inclusion initiatives help to address the growing mental health crisis at work. How we can overcome our blindspots and biases to recognize the role we all need to play to make our workplaces more welcoming and inclusive for everyone. How leaders can start this discussion in their organization and the 4 phases to successful implementation of diversity and inclusion initiatives. This is such an important conversation on a topic that every leader needs to get familiar and comfortable with. We have all heard of the business case for DEI but what about the wellness case for DEI? It is becoming increasingly apparent that without compassionate, inclusive, people-centred workplaces, health and wellbeing suffers and, in turn, so does productivity. If we want more innovative, collaborative and productive workplaces, we need to put wellbeing front and center, not just for some employees but for everyone. Employee wellbeing on the one hand and diversity, equity and inclusion efforts on the other have a symbiotic relationship. Taking a diverse and inclusive approach to wellbeing within a business will enhance employees' feelings of inclusion and belonging, which in turn improves their mental and emotional wellbeing, which further enhances their sense of belonging. And so the cycle goes on. To understand how we can put wellbeing at the center of our DEI efforts we are joined on the show today by Dr. Marlette Jackson the Global Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at Vigin Pulse. Dr Jackson discusses how diversity and inclusion are intertwined with employee health and wellbeing, because when employees feel like they can be their true selves, they use fewer sick days, stay longer at their company and are happier and more engaged in their work. She will also share how Virgin Pulse is putting wellbeing at the center of its own DEI efforts.

Today, companies want you to believe that they are not just selling a car, shampoo, or a pair of jeans, but rather they are fighting for gender and racial equality in an attempt to connect with millennials who are willing to spend more money on socially conscious products. Brands have started using progressive values as a marketing ploy and are appropriating social activism as a form of advertising. Companies want consumers to believe that this is not simply about commercial gain rather, openly advocating for social issues is a communication of what the company stands for. But what happens when people who work for these companies have a very different lived experience of the brand. Are companies that espouse values of inclusion, diversity, and equality walking the talk? Or is this just more woke washing? On today's episode, inclusion experts and consultants Erin Dowell and Marlette Jackson will share the signs your company and even you might be engaging in woke washing and what the costs of this are. Also, we will address what you and your organization can do to get real about equality.

We have all experienced pain, and as humans, suffering is a part of the deal, but why do we suffer AND how is it connected to our Purpose, or as Deneen calls it, our "Holy Assignment?" With her Bachelors and Masters in Psychology along with her inherited Native American spiritual gifts, Deneen shares channeled "sacred revelations" that came while on her own healing journey after contemplating suicide. In discussing her new book, "Soul Wounds and Sacred Revelations," Deneen helps us better understand the point of our pain, how we can heal, and she invites us to look deeper at our own lives and our family's history, even ancestry, to better understand who we are and why we're here so that we may fully awaken and live our best lives, at peace. This profound experience began a new journey towards healing and an awakening to who she really was! You will learn about the gifts of surrender, being more divine than human and her great, great Grandmother Lucinda Starflower! Who was a highly gifted healer and medicine woman with the Cherokee Tribe in the 1870's. Dr. Erin Albert brings us a special Pharmacy Podcast Episode with Co-Founder Doug Hirsch of GoodRx. GoodRx was co-founded by Scott Marlette and Doug Hirsch, both early employees of Facebook. Hirsch was VP of Product at Facebook back in 2005, and Marlette, one of the company's first 20 employees, was an engineer who worked on, among other things, Facebook's photo application. WHAT IS GOODRX? GoodRx is the leading prescription discount and pricing transparency provider, bringing millions of Americans the lowest possible prices for prescription drugs. The company's products, including its website and the #1 medical app in the App Store, are completely free and available to all Americans, insured or not. HOW DOES IT WORK? A lot of people don't realize that drug pricing is not at all fixed. The same prescription can vary in price dramatically from pharmacy to pharmacy. GoodRx's propriety market-intelligence technology evaluates available pricing at more than 70,000 pharmacies to bring customers up to 80% savings on their prescriptions. With GoodRx, Americans can finally compare prices and locations to find the best place to fill their prescriptions. We provide all the available pricing information, as well as GoodRx-exclusive coupons, and share all of this directly with the consumer, allowing the patient to make the smartest-possible purchasing decision based on their needs. Here's a video, showing this in full: https://www.goodrx.com/how-goodrx-works HOW MUCH MONEY HAVE PEOPLE SAVED, WITH GOODRX? Since the company's launch in 2011, Americans have saved approximately $3 billion using GoodRxservices. WHAT ARE SOME SPECIAL PROGRAMS, RECENTLY LAUNCHED? Just last week, GoodRx launched a joint program with Express Scripts called Inside Rx, that provides discounts on brand-name drugs, reducing the cost of more than 40 popular brand-name medications by an average of 34% off the retail price, including some of the most commonly prescribed drugs for diabetes, asthma and other prevalent American conditions. Here's our announcement: https://goo.gl/QvK37h Just this week, we added six new drugs to the Inside Rx program. See them here: https://www.goodrx.com/blog/new-lower-prices-for-more-brand-name-drugs/ On average, the program's discounts will provide savings of about $1,600 per year. Consumers and patients can visit www.GoodRx.com/brand to easily access the discounts. There are no fees, signups, or obligations required -- you simply present the GoodRx discount at a participating pharmacy and save. ABOUT DOUG HIRSCH: Doug Hirsch, (co-Founder and co-CEO of GoodRx), is on a mission to lower the cost of prescriptions in America. In 2010, while on private insurance with a high deductible, Doug received an alarmingly expensive prescription from a doctor, and decided to shop around for a lower price. He quickly realized how helpless Americans were, with no one-stop destination for prescription discounts and prices, a resource that could help patients shop smarter for the medications they need. So, in 2011, Doug launched GoodRx with co-founders Trevor Bezdek and Scott Marlette. To-date, GoodRx has saved Americans over $3 billion on their prescriptions. Earlier in his career, Doug spent 10 years at Yahoo, Inc., where he was among the first 30 employees. He conceived and/or managed the earliest online communities including Yahoo! Mail, GeoCities, Yahoo! Groups, Yahooligans, Yahoo! Personals, Yahoo! Chat, and more. Later, as General Manager of Yahoo! Entertainment, he was responsible for Yahoo! Movies, Yahoo! TV, Yahoo! Entertainment and a joint-venture with Paramount. In 2005, he joined Facebook as Vice President of Product, where he built Facebook Photos and other products. Post-Facebook, Doug founded DailyStrength, the web's largest community for people facing health and life challenges. DailyStrength was acquired in 2008 by HSW International. Doug is a magna cum laude graduate of Tufts University and currently lives in Santa Monica with his family, where GoodRx is headquartered.
