What makes films memorable and meaningful? Great cinematographers are not only translators of a director's vision but are involved in a dance between director and actor. When combined with personal techniques like handheld, the camera itself can become a character, bringing us back in time and behind the eyes of well-known figures like Van Gogh and Stephen Hawking, which is what Benoît Delhomme did in the films At Eternity's Gate and The Theory of Everything.Benoît Delhomme studied cinematography at the École nationale supérieure Louis-Lumière and went on to make his breakthrough as a director of photography for the movie The Scent of Green Papaya directed by Tran Anh Hung. The film went on to win the Caméra d'Or Award at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for an Academy Award. Benoît has established himself as an international cinematographer and has worked with creatives such as Al Pacino, Julian Schnabel, and James Marsh. Over the years, Benoît Delhomme has worked on a wide array of films where his focus has been to tell a strong story through the visual. This focus has shined not only through his work as a cinematographer, but also his work as a painter."If you want to do your art well, you need to have some pleasure. If talking is not a pleasure, it's horrible. And when filming on a set is a bad experience, it's one of the worst things in life. As a cinematographer, if you can't make what you do personal to you, there is no soul. You need to make it personal.I don't know if Julian Schnabel trusted me, and I had to prove myself. For example, he had another guy in mind. And for many weeks, he said to me, 'Maybe we should keep two cinematographers?' And one evening he said, 'I'm going to paint in my outdoor studio tonight if you want to come.' And, I went to see him painting and brought a small digital camera. And he had music on and was doing this incredible painting. I was kind of fascinated to be there. We didn't talk. He knew I was filming him. He didn't say anything. So I spent part of the night cutting my small documentary. And in the morning at breakfast, I put my computer on the breakfast table and showed it to him, and he was so focused and very moved by what he saw. And he said, 'Okay, you captured what I was doing. You've got the film.'"www.benoitdelhomme.comwww.benoitdelhommestudio.comwww.instagram.com/benoitdelhommewww.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast

For this powerful and moving episode I'm joined by one of my teachers, an amazing human who has had a profound impact on my life and journey, Tammy LaDrew. Tammy is a Life Artist, Writer & Personal Development Coach who teaches people how to live better lives through The Art of Awakening, Wayfinding and Conscious Creation - the art of connecting with their inner inspiration, reclaiming their Spirit, and delivering their creative presence into the world. The experience of being struck by lightning at the age of 17 initiated Tammy into her journey of sensing energy and the subtle world. The deviations and challenges of that path, and the way she both chose and learned to engage with them, have ultimately brought her into a wisdom journey - one where she can both nurture and hold others (like me!) in loving accountability. She's a heart-felt and natural addition to our village fire. And so, here we are. A rich episode, you'll hear us explore: recognizing the full expression of yourself from the conditioned one; a structural framework for understanding how to meet the world soul-soul, not role-to-role; why we often end up repelling the things we long for; the ‘rules' of Conscious Wayfinding and how they help us create our lives; when your spiritual tools become hypervigilance; the privilege, power, and responsibility of being human and creating a world we want to live in; what's actually at stake for us in these conversations; the surprising thing that might save humanity…and more. Gather with us? Awaken with us? Be moved with us? I hope you will. All of you matters here. Today was fun. I had Lisa Danielle on and we've been trying to arrange a podcast for about three years. One day and she's down here in Tucson and she came in and we just had a great talk. I've represented Lisa for almost 20 years or maybe even a little bit longer... but we've never had an in-depth conversation about her backstory. You see, that's one of the beautiful things about this podcast, is that through interviewing these individuals, I get a deeper sense of who the person is and why they do what they do. All too often there's this storyline that isn't all peaches and cream. It's incredibly difficult to get to the point of being able to make a living as an artist. Lisa even speaks about times where she couldn't get things sold and she's having to work at a nursing home. At the end of the day that's what you do if you really want to be an artist. You absolutely must be willing to put yourself in those positions to allow you to continue to create art.Lisa Danielle is one of those people that did it. So, it's a fascinating interview. In fact, it went for over 2 hours and it was like a time warp because I didn't even realize it had gone that long, which is always wonderful. So this will be a two-parter and this is part two of Lisa Danielle on Art Dealer Diaries Podcast episode 222.

So this will be a two-parter and this is part one of Lisa Danielle on Art Dealer Diaries Podcast episode 221.

In this interview we are so blessed and beyond excited to present this conversation with global Art Superstar Wyland! An icon on the landscape of mural painting, sculpture, oceanic conservation, and more, we are honored to release this rare in person long form talk with this true legend. He's epitomized the look and tone of underwater wildlife depiction in contemporary art, been a major driver for oceanic wellness and conservation, and as it turns out has had a blast doing it. Rarely do we in life encounter a person who radiates such unity of thought and action, who's singularity of vision has sculpted the world around them, and who has kept their authenticity through and though while shinning imagination on the world so effectively. A true visionary and world class inspiration to us all, well let Wylan take it from here! Internationally renowned marine life artist Wyland is one of the most celebrated and recognized artists of our time. An innovative painter, sculpture, writer, photographer, philanthropist, and filmmaker, he captured the imagination of people everywhere by completing over one hundred monumental marine life murals around the world from 1981-2008. The project, known as the Whaling Walls, remains one of the largest public arts projects in history and continues to be seen by an estimated one billion people each year... An avid SCUBA diver and world traveler, the Detroit-born artist has been hailed a “Marine Michaelangelo” by USA Today and recognized for his art and conservation efforts by the United Nations and on the floor of Congress. His giant ocean mural on the convention center in Long Beach, Calif., covering over 3 acres, landed him in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest mural ever painted. Several years later in recognition of Earth Day, he doubled the size of that mural by completing the largest portrait of the earth on earth on the building's three-acre roof -- in only twenty-four hours. In fact, no artist in history has painted more surface area that today is now measured in acres. His newest public art project, 100 Monumental Sculptures in 100 Great Cities around the world, includes plans to sculpt all the great whale species, as well as endangered and threatened animals from the IUCN Red List. Ten of these monumental sculptures will be underwater. “My art has always been about art and conservation,” Wyland says. “I was inspired in the early 70s by Green Peace, the first Earth Day, and from watching my hero Jacques Cousteau's Undersea World television series. I was simply an artist in the right place at the right time in history, and I felt strongly that art could play an important role in bringing attention to environmental issues.” Wyland's early inspiration grew upon seeing the ocean for the first time during a family visit to Laguna Beach, Calif., in 1971, when he was fourteen years old. The sight of a mother and baby gray whale migrating near the shore eventually inspired him to paint those same two whales on a life-size scale on an adjacent building in 1981. After the completion of the mural, he committed himself to creating one hundred ocean murals around the world as a gift to communities. He painted his 100th Whaling Wall mural in Beijing for the Cultural Olympics as the official artist for the US Olympic team. Today, Wyland art is collected in all fifty states and more than one hundred countries. He founded Wyland Galleries in 1978 with his first studio gallery in Laguna Beach where he lives today, and has influenced numerous traditional and street artists, including L.A.-based O.G. Slick. In 1993, he founded the non-profit Wyland Foundation as part of his continuing effort to inspire millions of people to take action to ensure clean water and a healthy planet through art, science, and conservation. Liz Goldberg has taught Fashion Illustration at The Pratt Institute and Drexel University for the past 11 years. Her work is an exploration of the theme of the “diva” – the flamboyantly uninhibited female and the personal and political empowerment she represents. As a painter, graphic artist, and animator, Liz has been inspired by puppets and absurdist theatre, influenced by puppet–like characters reminiscent of Alfred Jarry's forerunner of absurdist theater, Ubu-Roi, the buffoons of modernist playwright Michel de Ghelderode, the existentialist mime plays of Samuel Beckett, and the symbolist and political figures of European puppet theater. Liz has developed these “diva” and puppet-inspired works into experimental animated films in collaboration with filmmaker Warren Bass, broadcast on American Public Television and cable, receiving awards and juried recognition in over 20 countries. The works use animation as an analog to painting, dance and poetry, and are intended to re-define the paradigm of what an animation can be. The process of animation has, in turn, influenced her full-scale paintings and works-on-paper producing diptychs, triptychs, and serial prints with progressive deviations. In 2018, Liz and Warren produced “Vogueing and Other Pleasures” shown at the Film Festival at the Barnes in conjunction with the Musee de Paris. In 2018, the film was also shown as part of “Contexualizing Fashion” at Pratt. A full room installation was created at Joan Shepp where Liz was a resident artist for 3 years 2017- 2020, installing the entire space with 1,750 hand-drawn cells from the animation, as well as paintings and prints.Liz's work was recently part of MINIFEST at Theaterlab - a fun and vibrant event that brought together a variety of artists to share short works throughout Theaterlab's full loft on September 18 and 19 in New York City. MINIFEST is an afternoon of tiny delights, short sparks of new work, and other small surprises. Last produced on March 8, 2020, days before theater closed. This year's MINIFEST focused on Fashion and the Body. Participating artists included Marco Casazza, Liza Cassidy, Blane Charles, Orietta Crispino, Jed Distler, Liz Goldberg, Naoki Iwakawa, Michaela Lind, Stefanie Nelson, Lisa Silvestri, Alex Sollitto, Lesley Ware, Louisa Willis, Ulisespal, Glenna Yu and Lanie Zipoy. ~~~~~~~To explore past episodes of Into the Absurd, visit our Facebook page:https://www.facebook.com/pg/Idiopathi...ORThe IRC's YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/playlist...And while you're there, be sure to SUBSCRIBE, so you don't miss any future episodes.

We spoke to Carissa Karamarko a few months ago when Melbourne was beginning this lockdown period. Carissa is represented by Saint Cloche in Paddington Sydney but lives and works in Melbourne. We had a great chat about working through lockdown, having a mentor, not going to art school, preparing for a show, and much more. Carissa's next show will be at Saint Cloche in Feb 2022. Thanks for talking to us Carissa.Carissa Karamarko is an emerging artist based in Melbourne who uses the genre of still life to explore colour, navigating different worlds and experiences through objecthood.Carissa's artworks investigate our relationship to objects and their meaning, both inherent, associated or inherited. However, using expressive colour, she expands on this traditional art genre, affirming its place within today's contemporary art world. The paintings extend a relationship between how objects dictate our view on history, particular moments in time and how they can provide a window into a world unseen. Carissa relates this to her own surroundings and the items she curates. Yet, critically, her investigation of objects sets out to understand different worlds and different people.Within her still life paintings, we see a close connection to colour, one that relates to her discovery of herself in her formative days. This relationship with colour follows an intuitive process; Carissa typically begins her process with photographs, capturing the composition and framing through her eye. She works directly from these images, painting onto the canvas with oils, in an automatic process, working quickly, acting intuitively, and trusting the process.Carissa has been a finalist in numerous art prizes, including the Geelong Contemporary Art Award, Muswellbrook Art Prize, and the Mosman Art Award. Her work is held in collections across Australia.

Today, Tahverlee is joined by Whitney Freya. Whitney is a modern-day mystic and an expert in Inspired Living, providing practical tools and practices that free your mind from limitations and expand your sense of possibility and overall wellness. Whitney's transformational journey started in 1996 when she opened her first art studio with zero art training! She had a profound sense that she was supposed to do something different with her life. Since then, she has been committed to creating her own inspired life and helping others to do the same. Whitney believes that what we spend our most attention on and where we send our intention (often without awareness) is truly what determines our life experience.Whitney approaches the canvas as a practice to focus on creating what she wants more of in her life. She begins with painting words of intention onto the canvas and then layers art over it. Whitney surrounds herself with her art because she believes that original art is alive and has energy. When you create art that aligns with your true self, you get to step into the art you create, which changes everything.Whitney wants to help as many people as possible create the art that is their life with awareness. And the canvas gives us the time and space to do that by allowing us to align with that creative frequency. The canvas becomes a mirror, so where you get stuck in creating at the canvas is where your life is stuck. Suppose it's your inner perfectionist, your inner critic, your procrastinator, or if you compare yourself to others. Whatever pattern you do in your life, wherever you hit those speed bumps along the way of bringing your dreams into reality, it is going to happen at the canvas.Whitney believes that if you dare to dream and choose to paint something wild and free on the canvas, that activates a whole new way of expressing yourself in life. Paint the picture of your life as if it has already happened, not what you hope might someday come true, and that will activate a whole new way of expressing yourself in life. Creating at the canvas peels away those layers of inhabitation and doubt and helps you engage in life.Whitney teaches being authentically, transparently, out loud, you! For her, learning to live as a Life Artist gives the perfect perspective through which we can take back our power. She teaches you to go deep within to reconnect to what you want, what lights you up, what inspires you, what calls to your fearless self, and what you want to create in this lifetime. Whitney strives to free people from the "shoulds" and "have-tos" and reconnect them to the present moment magic that will take their breath away.Whitney is the author of three books on personal creativity, the most recent being 30 Days to Unstoppable, which can be purchased HERE. She is also an inspirational speaker and the leader of a community that circles around the fire of inspiration & personal freedom through her online programs and coaching training. Since 1996, when Whitney dared to open an art center with ZERO art background, she has been committed to creating her own most inspired life & then helping others to do the same. Turns out, what we spend our most attention on, and where we send our intention (often without awareness) is truly what determines our life experience. For her, learning to live as a Life Artist gives the perfect perspective through which we can TAKE BACK our power. What does that mean? It means going within to reconnect to what you want, what LIGHTS YOU UP, what INSPIRES you, what calls to your FEARLESS self & what you want to CREATE in this lifetime. Whitney strives to FREE people from the “shoulds” and “have-tos” and reconnect them to the present moment magic that will take their breath away! Nancy Quinn was born in Royal Oak, Michigan, but has lived in many areas of the country. She is an internationally known wildlife artist whose work is noted for its detail and accuracy, and she is the recipient of two World Wildlife Art Championship awards. Nancy has always had a love of animals and nature. After college, she worked as a conservation law enforcement duty officer for the state of Florida. She volunteered her spare time at wildlife rehabilitation centers, bringing their birds and reptiles into the schools to educate children of all ages. Over the years she has handled many domestic and exotic species, including cougars, leopards, and tigers, and always had interesting stories to tell about her encounters with wild animals. Upon leaving a suburban lifestyle in the metro Washington, DC area, to live in rural Montana, she discovered a new world of exciting and unusual adventures. Encouraged by friends and family alike, she wrote her first book, "Go West, Young Woman!" She now happily resides on a mountainside in Montana with her husband, daughters, dogs, and horses, where she continues to paint and write about her experiences living in the still wild west.

Working in the restaurant, co-owned with her husband, things moved so fast, she didn't have time to think. Not realizing she had grown addicted to the stress of constant knee-jerk reaction and motion. Once she left the business, she found herself spiritually restless, uneasy, and ready to reconnect with herself. Not knowing any better (no formal training or advanced  degree), she picked up her first paintbrush at age 40. And, since that time, she has not only found her own inner artist, she has helped many others find theirs. As she explains on the show, she doesn't teach people how to paint, she helps people experience their own artistic awakening. Artist and author Dorsey McHugh joins us to talk about self discovery, fears, and all things artsy. Also, she talks about the wonderful and insightful book ,she co-authored with Joanne Miller: the recently released, Be your Finest Art. An important part of the conversation, that needs to be mentioned, is that Dorsey never said to herself: "I want to be an art teacher. Therefore I must ..." She simply expressed herself fully and unapologetically. The students and opportunities came as a by-product of her expression.   Dorsey's world changed when she picked up the book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards.
