In this Kitchen Side episode of The Long Game Podcast, Alex, David, and Allie record their first in-person conversation in New York City. The episode revolves around insights gathered from dozens of marketing leaders, discussing SEO traffic declines, AI's real impact on marketing, attribution challenges, and the balance between brand and demand generation. The team reflects on how companies are adapting to falling organic traffic, the rise of video SEO, and why traditional top-of-funnel strategies are losing effectiveness. They also explore the importance of customer research, the disconnect between social media conversations and real-world priorities, and how teams can align leadership expectations with evolving marketing realities.Key TakeawaysSEO Traffic Declines: Nearly every marketing leader interviewed reported a drop in organic traffic, leading to internal strategy shifts and leadership concerns.AI in Marketing Operations: While AI is not yet a core part of content creation, teams are leveraging it for keyword research, automation, and efficiency improvements.Video SEO on the Rise: Many companies are prioritizing video content as search engines increasingly favor multimedia formats.Attribution & Leadership Education: As traffic declines, marketers are struggling to shift leadership focus from surface-level metrics (traffic) to real business outcomes (pipeline and revenue). The “Traffic Trap” Problem: Some teams have historically been gold on traffic rather than conversions, forcing a reevaluation of SEO and content strategies.Brand vs. Demand Debate: Companies are reassessing how to balance brand-building efforts with performance-driven demand generation. The Shift in Customer Research & Buying Behavior: Many marketing decisions are now happening outside of trackable systems, making traditional attribution models less reliable.Show LinksConnect with David Khim on LinkedIn and TwitterConnect with Alex Birkett on LinkedIn and TwitterConnect with Allie Decker on LinkedIn and TwitterConnect with Omniscient Digital on LinkedIn or TwitterWhat is Kitchen Side? One big benefit of running an agency or working at one is you get to see the “kitchen side” of many different businesses; their revenue, their operations, their automations, and their culture. You understand how things look from the inside and how that differs from the outside. You understand how the sausage is made.

Episode 173 of The Smart Agents Podcast features Atiba de Souza, the brilliant video marketing expert and CEO of Client Attraction Pros.
Voices of Search // A Search Engine Optimization (SEO) & Content Marketing Podcast
Andy Crestodina, Co-Founder and CMO of Orbit Media, talks about how to take advantage of changes to the SERP. If your SEO strategy is still based on topping the results in terms of the traditional 10 blue links, you're likely to get overshadowed on the SERPs. In reality, the SERP is moving towards being a more visual experience, so the more that you understand what's going on with the SERP and user intent, the more you'll understand what content formats you need to be producing to stay relevant. In this episode of Chasing the Insights, I talk to video and SEO guru Atiba de Souza. Atiba talks to us about an underappreciated superpower that we can have as an entrepreneur, Video SEO. Atiba de Souza started his career in internet-based search in 1996. In the early 2000's he consulted for several government agencies (INS, EPA, DLA, and several military departments) and led teams that designed and built search tools. For the EPA, in 2001, Atiba and his team built a $10 million dollar system that allowed the EPA to easily search their data agency-wide. After almost 10 years in the government sector, Atiba turned to the private sector and the burgeoning field of SEO. Using a unique method of blending storytelling with search keywords Atiba has helped rank over 10,000 pages on Google's Page 1 for various search terms.

Heba Ashour talks with Jason Barnard about how international image/video search works. Heba Ashour is Principal Program Manager Lead of Multimedia Search Ranking and Platform at Microsoft Bing. She is an experienced leader, technology manager, technical visionary, and passionate about using technology to democratise access to information, services, and opportunities. Heba focuses on providing users of search services around the world with engaging images/videos that match their exact intent in every scenario, empowering them to be informed, entertained, save money, and succeed. Previously, she worked at Microsoft Research's Advanced Technology Lab in Cairo, where she turned various research technologies into features that were integrated into various Microsoft products. In this delightful episode, Heba Ashour and Jason Barnard discuss how search engine users around the world are increasingly using visual and video search to get a quick and accurate answers to their questions and solutions to their problems. Heba explains that Bing's massive technology advances and overcoming bandwidth and technology limitations have vastly increased their capacity to deliver the most relevant results for users' search queries, regardless of the language they use. And that drives user demand, expanding expectations, and an increasingly immersive, multimedia user experience on search engines like Bing and Google. That said, even in the modern world of Search (circa 2022), text search is still heavily used… but to what extent is image and video search really making a difference, is it replacing or supplementing text searches and how do the two interact? Then, as people get busier and busier in this fast-paced world, and as search engines like Bing get better exponentially at understanding the contents, will we see an increasing shift towards image and video search. As a wonderful bonus, towards the end you'll learn more about the importance of human intelligence and human annotators in machine learning… and do the algorithms have aesthetic appreciation of the images they are showing, and to what extent does that play into the results we see?. As always, the show ends with passing the baton… Heba sweetly hands over to next week's incredible guest, Mike Ulmer. Aleyda Solis with Jason Barnard at SMX West Aleyda Solis talks to Jason Barnard about optimising video for YouTube. There are three pillars: Relevance, Engagement and Retention. All based on understanding your audience, and creating videos that bring them value and that they want to consume. Sounds so simple. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSZxcIxmSC0 Aleyda learned loads from producing her practical / how-to series : Crawling Mondays. The series has been very successful with her very niche audience (international SEO), which very much proves her point. Success on Youtube is all about playing the YouTube algorithm as a social algorithm. All about relevance, engagement and retention. The entire system works on the algo recommending according to direct user behaviour (shares, likes, watches, comments and channel retention…). Building communities around your brand on all sorts of channels then push the video out to them to get that user engagement right at the start… that boosts it up and gets it more recommendations to relevant people by the algorithm, and that creates a virtuous circle. Lastly, you should publish the video on your site. You lose nothing and gain visibility for your site outside the YouTube. Use Wistia to do that because it includes structured data that will give your thumbnails in Google SERPs… and Google can show both the YouTube and Wistia versions in their carousels. Along the way, Aleyda mentions boatloads of SEO tools and their functionalities.
