One of the most common things we hear both in our DMs and in the therapy room is that the pressure to “bounce back” to who you were before having feels like it's hitting us from virtually every single corner of our lives. Have you ever paid close attention to the ways people respond to something you share that is pregnancy or motherhood-related? If not, after listening to this episode, you're gonna. Because when you're telling someone about the anxiety you have while your newborn is sleeping, it's important to note that upwards of 0 people have been helped by hearing something to the effect of “just wait til they're crawling!!!!” This is something most, if not all, new moms can relate to. We can all recall that one time someone told us something that was so unhinged and horrifying, it truly caught us off-guard. In this week's episode, Erin and Ruby explore the ways in which people use toxic positivity (or is it just…toxic…?) when chatting with you about your pregnancy or postpartum experience. From sentences that start with the words “well, at least….” to comparing your lows to someone's instagram highs, we'll cover it all!The MamaZen app is the #1 mindful parenting app and a total game changer for moms whose emotional and mental well-being has been neglected for far too long. We hear a lot about the “invisible load” of motherhood, and that's almost always applied to stay-at-home moms. And what's truly mind-blowing is that literally none of the work done by SAHMs is invisible!!! It's constant! It's ever-changing! You're doing all the things everyone relies on! YOU. DON'T. STOP. Whether you knew all along that you wanted to be a SAHM, or it was something that happened somewhere along the way, you're allowed to struggle with parts of this. The nuance is a lot to try and hold alone (and that's where we come in!!) In this episode, Ruby and Erin explore some of the thoughts commonly heard in the therapy room or in their DMs, like how hard it is to ask for help, or how to pull yourself out of the “I do the same thing everyday” funk. The MamaZen app is the #1 mindful parenting app and a total game changer for moms whose emotional and mental well-being has been neglected for far too long. “Family planning” is kind of a weird term. It encompasses so many different aspects of, well, planning for your family. But is there really a clear definition? For others, they thought they had a clear idea, but something happens along their journey in parenthood that totally changes things for them. There's no right or wrong way to approach it, but it can feel l like every decision you make weighs a million pounds. On this week's episode, Erin and Ruby touch on one aspect of family planning in particular: the decision to not have anymore children. Jennifer is a wealth of knowledge and shared tons of apps she uses to maximize her limited free time and be super efficient when it comes to things like everyday tasks, meal planning, house chores and more. One recurring thread in so many of my conversations with friends, colleagues and fellow parents is too many to-dos and not enough time. When you're juggling a million responsibilities, it's natural to want to find tools to help but it can be difficult to wade through the crazy amount of options available. We're here to offer a great foundation for lots of pain points we face in our everyday lives like efficient meal planning, staying on top of tasks, and managing our homes. Our guest, Jennifer, is the definition of techy and she's tested tons of apps and different systems to bring us the creme of the crop when it comes to tech tips and apps that make life easier. We discuss what it means to create a life of joy and purpose through caring for ourselves mentally, physically, and spiritually, and how we can also approach our outward circumstances and embrace the gift of service as we welcome 2022. What Fresh Hell: Laughing in the Face of Motherhood | Parenting Tips From Funny Moms

If you're part of the “sandwich generation”– taking care of your parents and your children at the same time– you've got a lot of company. The demographic trends of later parenting and increasing life expectancies mean this double-caretaking will become a reality for a lot more of us. And it seems that this responsibility is falling more often on women: two-thirds of people doing the double caretaking are female.  In this episode, we discuss how caring for parents can be particularly fraught, whether you're giving them daily insulin shots, or just trying to make sense of their finances every April.  We also discuss the importance of prioritizing our own mental and physical health, even (especially) when there seems to be little time to do so.  Finally, we talk about operating from a place of maximum vulnerability. Realize that you really are doing more than any one person can handle. Get specific about the help you need, and be honest when you're hitting your limits.  Here are links to some of the writing on the topic that we discuss in this episode: Dorothy A. Have you ever heard about someone succeeding, and instead of feeling happy for them, you felt slightly nauseous like you ate something rotten? Maybe you even felt like you wished they would trip a bit over their success? Jealousy is an incredibly unpleasant emotion, and yet it's a common human experience. In a world where we see the best of everyone's lives on the internet, how can we navigate the inherent comparisons? Is there any gift we can glean from feeling jealous? In this episode, we wrestle with these ideas and walk you through how to recognize jealousy, allow it to point us to clarity of things you desire (or maybe by questioning it, you realize things you don't want after all), and then how to move past it to living authentic to yourself. We also talk about how to perhaps get to the point where you can experience genuine happiness for others' successes. Just maybe;). We often receive the message that we can have it all; we can do it all. Social media messages, societal expectations, and our own self talk often feed the lie that we can do EVERYTHING. When we don't live up to the unrealistic expectation that we can do everything and succeed at everything, there is a cost to our mental health. In this episode, we discuss this topic with New York Times best selling author, Greg McKeown. He helps identify the lie that we can do everything, and instead offers a path of wisdom, balance, and priorities instead of the wild racing that we often indulge in when we are trying to say yes to everything. He gives us very applicable steps on how to make doing what truly matters to us easy. Connection is at the center of so much of our lives and relationships. In this episode, Taralyn, Felica, and Katelin wrestle with the concept of how to maintain connection with others and live wholeheartedly, while still releasing what we cannot control and detaching from the outcome. Detachment is a popular word in some self-help philosophy, and it is a valuable concept because it allows us to not cling onto things we are unable to control. However, each of us values deep connection. We share metaphors we have come up with to help us wrap our minds around these ideas and how to love deeply, give without resentment, and express our needs to others. How can we sacrifice beautifully for those we love, while still staying whole ourselves? How can we follow our dreams without becoming an island with empty relationships? We talk about possibilities of finding a balance on this topic. In this episode, she discusses how to consciously curate a capsule wardrobe and (beyond that) how to wear more of the clothes you already have in your closet right now by incorporating her tried and true style concepts. Before we get into the conversation, I'll leave you with this quote from fashion and beauty writer, Rae Ritchie, she says, “It's a misconception to think that minimalism and fashion are incompatible. It's still possible to remain up to date with major trends and have a small capsule wardrobe. You just have to be judicious in your choices. Treat how you dress as a fun creative hobby, a chance to play. With a foundation of versatile basics, you can easily drop in a few items that catch your eye.” I'd have to agree.----Show Notes for EP195: Feeling Confident in Your Capsule WardrobeEnjoy this Podcast?Post a review and share it! If you enjoyed tuning into this podcast, then do not hesitate to write a review.
