Exploring the Foundations: The Role of Thales in the Birth of Greek PhilosophyIn this episode, we delve into the history and philosophy, focusing on Thales of Miletus, who is often considered the first philosopher. We review the importance of understanding historical and intellectual contexts and explore Thales' groundbreaking idea that water is the fundamental substance of everything. The discussion touches on critical concepts such as the shapeless stream, fate, and the significance of autonomous human reasoning in the development of philosophy. The episode also examines skepticism and its recurring role in philosophical discourse, setting the stage for future explorations of early Greek philosophers.00:00 Introduction and Recap01:16 The Shapeless Dream: A Fundamental Concept03:26 Greek Philosophy: Rational or Not?04:31 The Dual Nature of Humans06:25 The One and the Many07:22 The First Philosophers10:08 The Presupposition of Autonomous Human Reasoning11:52 Skepticism and Its Implications13:31 Revelation vs. Reason in Greek Philosophy13:55 Philosophy in a Polytheistic Culture14:11 Introduction to Early Philosophers14:28 Thales of Miletus: Background and Contributions15:47 Thales' Philosophical Ideas17:28 The Concept of Arche18:39 Thales' Famous Assertions19:36 Philosophical Implications and Critiques24:19 Concluding Thoughts and Next Episodes
SummaryAs soon as Taylor uttered the words “Female Rage: The Musical” after unveiling TTPD on the Eras Tour, Sara and Laura knew what had to be done! Laura, as a hardcore musical theater girlie, walks us through a brief history of musicals before the ladies compare alllllll the Broadway references hidden in The Eras Tour. Turns out, Tay Tay is definitely a musical theater gal!Sara and Laura also have a hefty conversation critiquing the album variant rollout, as well as their disappointment in the Billie Eilish back and forth, excitement for new Karma easter eggs, and their wishlist of what “Female Rage: The Musical”'s songs would be if it were a real Broadway show! Regular host Matt Phillips returns from sunny Cyprus to bring us THREE episodes of the Sports Therapy Association podcast focusing on the KNEE. In this episode 'The Adolescent Knee', Matt's special guest is Angela Jackson, a physiotherapist on a mission to provide fellow health care professionals with tools to reduce the amount of injury we see in youth sport - injury that all too often with the right education could have been avoided. Angela's website angelajacksonphysio.com includes a fantastic series of courses for health care professionals including “Assessment, Diagnosis and Return to Play of the Adolescent Knee” and “Injury to Return to Play - Adolescent Knee and Low Back Pain”. Topics discussed in this episode include: The ethos behind 'Active Kids are not Mini Adults' Just because you have the skills to work with an adult knee does not mean you have the knowledge to work with a child's knee. Details of the ‘Assessment, Diagnosis and Return to Play of the Adolescent Knee' on Angela's website. Using a Paediatric Pathology Quiz (X-ray photos) on the course to help set a baseline of knowledge. Question: Is there a gender disparity between knee conditions in young athletes? • Hypermobility and Valgus Angle How to engage younger athletes so they comply with recommended exercises Question: How common and successful is surgical intervention? • How accurate are screening protocols, e.g. measuring Q-Angle? Question: Fractured femur, lateral displacement, ACL ruptury in 20 year old athlete Rehabilitation & realistic expectation Choosing CPD that will help the individual therapist • Patellofemoral Pain - differences in anatomy between adults and younger athletes Osgood Schlatter's Disease - potential misdiagnosis Patella Alta - asymptomatic vs symptomatic Useful Links Angela Jackson Website Our sincere thanks to Angela Jackson for giving up her time to be a guest on the show. NEXT EPISODES... On this week's entertainment-themed Round 2, two more episodes of Ted Lasso, season two. "Rainbow" was a delightful rom-com tribute that nicely followed up the preceding episode, "Carol of the Bells," and its Love Actually inspirations. And "The Signal" gave us plenty of dating-app hi-jinks along with a nice victory for the team and for Nate. Next: Episodes 7 and 8 of season 2, "Headspace" and "Man City."
Huberman Lab Podcast Notes Key Takeaways Endurance exercise enhances the ability of the brain and body to work for longer periods of time High intensity and long duration endurance training improves brain function by oxygenating the brain and delivering more nutrients to neurons“The reason we quit is rarely because our body quits; our mind quits.” – Dr. Andrew HubermanFive main drivers of effort in the body: neurons, muscle, heart, blood, and lungsThe source of energy in the body depends on the duration of activity – if you hit a wall, try increasing the pace to tap into other fuel sourcesEndurance training seems to improve brain function more than strength or hypertrophy training Muscular endurance training protocol: 3-5 sets of 12-100 repetitions (but 12-25 is reasonable for most people) with a rest period between 30-180 secondsFor muscular endurance, try isometric holds, compound exercise, kettlebell swings – but no eccentric loading Long duration endurance training protocol: one set of anything longer than 12 minutes Anaerobic HIIT endurance protocol: 3-12 sets with a ratio of work to rest at 3:1 (e.g., 30 seconds work: 10 seconds rest) – or – a ratio of 1:5 (e.g., 20 seconds hard work: 100 seconds rest)Aerobic HIIT endurance protocol: 3-12 sets with 3:1 ratio (e.g., 30 seconds work: 10 seconds rest) – or 1:1 ratio (e.g., 30 seconds work: 30 seconds rest)Read the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgThis episode I discuss endurance: our ability to perform effort over extended amounts of time. I describe the four kinds of endurance: muscular endurance, long duration (single-set) efforts, and the two kinds of high intensity interval training that can benefit our brain and various systems of our body. I discuss the fuel systems they each rely on and how to build up your capillary beds in muscle, and in the brain to increase oxygen utilization or improve postural endurance. I discuss efficiency of effort and maximizing quality of effort, as well as the simplest hydration formula. I review how our heart literally gets stronger (as a muscle) when we oxygenate muscles properly and ways to warm up with and improve respiration/breathing. I also discuss motivation for long bouts of work and the visual physiological basis of the "extra gear" we all can leverage for effort. Finally, I review how accelerating as we fatigue can allow us to access untapped energetic resources. As always, both science, mechanism and tools are discussed throughout. April is our month of movies that are just weird or different enough not to fit into some of the other themes we had assigned to each month. So... we end the month with one of the weirdest of 1988: Return of the Killer Tomatoes. Once we move pasta that one, we take a look at Tapeheads, which didn't seem to know exactly what it wanted to be... much like the main characters. Finally, we go off on a bit of a tangent related to MTV, music video channels, and how Pat grew up without cable and still turned out okay. In 1986, Frank Miller introduced us to a dark and gritty Batman who's pulling a Murtaugh and definitely getting too old for this #@&% in The Dark Knight Returns. In 1987, Frank Miller jumped back and showed us Bruce Wayne's formative first year as the Batman in Batman: Year One. In 1988, Alan Moore, Jim Starlin, Brian Bolland, and Jim Aparo decided to beat the crap (literally) out of the Bat family by crippling Batgirl and killing Robin. These movies are eerily similar. Danny DeVito feels like he’s looking into a mirror when he meets his twin brother Julius for the first time. Josh Baskin looks in the mirror and sees Tom Hanks. Victor Laszlo believes in freedom. Ilsa believes in Victor. Rick believed in his love for Ilsa. This episode of TUBE TUNES explores the rise of the adult westerns in the 1950s by focusing on ten of them (Part 2 will cover another ten or so in a later episode). Included are the iconic theme tunes of each show, brief biographies of the theme composers and lyricists for each series, a rundown of the stars, synopses and broadcast histories of each show, and trivia about all of them. The series explored in this episode: GUNSMOKE, THE LIFE AND LEGEND OF WYATT EARP, CHEYENNE, HAVE GUN - WILL TRAVEL, SUGARFOOT, WAGON TRAIN, MAVERICK, WANTED: DEAD OR ALIVE, BRONCO, and THE TEXAN. A few vintage commercials (Budweiser Beer, Great American Soups, Hershey Chocolate, and Sergio Valente Jeans) are also interspersed throughout the podcast. Thanks to Zerbinator for helping me get this podcast off the ground and running. His encouragement and expertise are very much appreciated by me. You can find all of his fun-to-listen-to podcasts here. And I'd also like especially to thank him for providing the opening and closing theme music for TUBE TUNES; all of his fantastic music can be found here. Thanks, Burford. When Christmas rolls around there’s nothing better than settling down to a lovely family film. How many terrorists and bomb plots would you like in your film? Also would you like a drunk Anakin Skywalker in it? Tough, as Arnie shows us in this film, Christmas romps can’t always overcome all obstacles as it gets eaten alive by the sharks it’s jumping! We have Bob back on to remind us of the true meaning of Christmas because this film certainly doesn’t! P.s. the jingling is coming from Arnies’ Trousers. There is nothing better than a lovely sugary Christmas film at this time of year. We chose Die Hard 2. There was so much swearing in this film if you take out the swears there’s only 15minutes of dialogue. Fact. Let this foul mouthed film take you away from the hustle and bustle of shopping and caring for children or the elderly as we explore the crazy world or John "No Luck" McLane. The names Jond, Bames Jond. We suffer through head colds to bring you a Bond special to celebrate the new James Bond film. This particular James Bond film though is much less spy thriller and more Ernest goes to Space. We listen as Old Granny Penny can't even tickle the fancy of Rodger Moore despite James just humping his way across the world. Aye Robot more like! In the first episode of the second series the boys return to their roots (Will Smith Films that start with "I") and watch Will Smith express himself by throwing bikes at people to save bullets in his quest to rid the world of robots. As we find out he's a robacist (racist against robots) and will stop at nothing to stop Hal 9000, sorry I mean VIKI from ending the human race. Ryan Reynolds is at it again using his super power of destroying comic book movies with his quirky-ness this time they didn’t even stitch his mouth up! 2011’s Green Lantern here gets ruined to the point Grant’s pretty sure it was Grey lantern he was watching. It's a Wedding heist gone wrong, starring Vince Vaghn, Owen Wilson and Christopher Walken, prepare for some... romantic comedy? Yes it was the wrong choice of genre, straight out the gate, it screamed comedy but the insisted, no lets make it a romantic comedy. No Hollywood! bad boy/girl! Oh pretty woman, walking down the... watch out for that skateboard with a knife in it! Yes Richard Gere is here to treat Julia Roberts like a peice of rubbish and get away with it in this film, watch as he does a lot more than just snap a box shut on her fingers. Will the boys be able to get past the shopping montages? Well they have drafted in their first ever female guest host to help them. Welcome to Season 2 Episode 28, where we cover Chapters 50-53 of The Dream Thieves! It's Adam's turn for learning about his life-altering mystical experience, while Blue and Gansey go out for a totally-not-romantic-let's-never-talk-about-this drive through the Henrietta hills. Ronan has a chat with his (dead? dream?) dad, and the Gray Man gets some bad family news of his own. We compare our favorite pies and favorite paintings, Shannon covets the Lisa Frank tarot deck, and Nievita drops some seriously dark theories behind Prokopenko's resurrection. Greenmantle says possibly the creepiest thing ever, and Shannon breaks the harsh news that fictional characters don't know we exist. Welcome to Season 2 Episode 21, where we cover Chapters 19-22 of The Dream Thieves! The Gangsey make an illegal trip to Ronan's childhood home to get rid of yet another body. Ronan apparently dislikes light fixtures and psychics but loves his baby brother. Shannon connects the origins of some Sleeping Beauty stories to our good pal Geoffrey of Monmouth and reveals that she has a list of people she would bury a body for. Nievita admits to her childhood career aspirations and favorite Disney villainess, and we debate whether the term “Cat Room” refers to real cats or cat-shaped figurines. Welcome to Season 2 Episode 25, where we cover Chapters 34-39 of The Dream Thieves! Ronan puts the dreamed Camaro keys to the test by seeking some street racing Zen with Joseph Kavinsky, but gets a collision of epic proportions instead. Meanwhile a different, but no less destructive, type of collision is happening at the Gansey mansion between Adam and RCG3. Looks like lots of things are going to end up broken tonight! We also talk about the fastest cars we've ever driven, how street racing relates to Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass, and the perfect TV show visuals. Shannon calls Ronan “bro”, Kavinsky is weirdly compared to a white knight rescuing a damsel, and Nievita rants about the legality of abandoning a car (not to mention nightmarish bodies) on the side of the road in Virginia. Episode Summary: Welcome to Episode 10, where we cover Chapters 27-29 of The Raven Boys! Nievita and Shannon wander deep into the world of Ghost Stories as one of the biggest twists of the series is revealed! No, wait, it was revealed in Episode 2... our bad. We debate whether Calla is a fan of German Expressionism, where Gansey might keep his mint leaves, who is the bigger fashion disaster between Gansey and Blue, whether or not Bluesey is a “Puzzle Couple”, and somehow Nievita makes way too many D&D jokes. Yeah, I guess that's actually something that can happen. Who knew? Episode Summary: Welcome to Episode 9, where we cover Chapters 25-26 of The Raven Boys! A lot of language discussion in this one, which is terrible because neither of us speak Latin! Welcome to Season 2 Episode 29, where we cover Chapters 54-59 of The Dream Thieves! Ronan and the Gray Man finally meet face-to-face and it goes about as well as one might expect--possibly better, even. Persephone and Adam frantically fix the ley line as the 4th of July looms large in the sky. Why must they hurry? Seems like someone's favorite baby brother may have been teen-napped… some guys really do just blow right past flowers and chocolate to cars and threats, don't they? We discuss how long it's been since we've seen “The Birds”, what items we would most miss if we had to go on the run, Shannon questions how much Nievita really is a fire sign and makes some surprisingly off-color jokes, Nievita's pet naming conventions stay strong to a theme, and we finally get around to naming that new Metal band we've been talking about starting. Episode Summary: Welcome to Episode 13, where we cover Chapters 36-38 of The Raven Boys! While 13 is generally one of Nievita's favorite numbers, this episode feels very unlucky indeed. We take a dark ride through the confrontation between Adam and Robert Parrish and the immediate aftermath--and while we do cry, it's possibly not as much as we thought we would. We tackle some pretty heavy topics such as the responsibility of Adam's mom, Ronan's expression of his pain and frustration, the protection that white privilege affords some of the characters, and how Gansey's own parental emotional neglect may have played in to his responses (but does not excuse his victim-blaming.) Strap in, my friends… you know it's a tough one when Whelk is the comic relief. WARNING: These chapters deal with the direct result of domestic abuse. Please practice self-care while listening. Episode Summary: Welcome to Episode 14, where we cover Chapters 39-43 of The Raven Boys! We are just one episode away from the end of Season 1 and wrapping up the first book of the Raven Cycle. It's been a lot of laughs and tears so far, and just like these chapters we are winding up to go out with a stampede! Or, well, something like that. Shannon drops some Transformers trivia and calls Nievita out on her taste in men; Nievita makes a Rick Riordan joke and questions whether Punxsutawney Phil is actually immortal as claimed; and we discuss terrible lunch habits and that Whelk is indeed correct on one thing and one thing only… guacamole might be worth committing murder for. Welcome to the Call Down The Hawk Special Episode!!! Where we cover the excerpt released by Scholastic, Prologue-Chapter 8. So many new characters! So many new things to be worried about! SO MUCH EXCITEMENT! Find out what Shannon would have called the black market, what 90's British cartoon Nievita thinks might be related to dreamers, the possible meaning behind the new dream-forest's name, and what we found most shocking and satisfying about the excerpt. We answer (or ramble) some listener questions, and grade our past predictions for the Dreamer Trilogy as Confirmed, Denied, or Unknown. Are we possibly psychic? It's up to you to decide! NOTES: There was an announcement today (7/3/19) about Ronan's birthday in the final version of Call Down The Hawk being changed from the listed date in the preview excerpt, to keep in line with events from The Raven King. Welcome to Episode 12, where we cover Chapters 33-35 of The Raven Boys! In this episode, we ponder the deepest of all philosophical questions: whether or not Gansey might be seeing alternate timelines, what the bathing habits of wizards truly are, what “butternut” is actually a euphemism for, and the hotly-contested eternal debate between, “The Pig is magic,” vs. “The Pig is just a piece of crap”. And, Lovely Listeners, this time around be happy that podcasting is not a fully sensory experience! They don't call it “Devil's Dung” for nothing... Welcome to Season 2 Episode 27, where we cover Chapters 44-49 of The Dream Thieves! So much angst, practically every character hits bottom. That means the only thing left is up, right? Nievita tells basically everyone except Kavinsky to eff off, and Shannon calls Greenmantle a b*tthole which is basically the same thing. We talk symbolism in Feng Shui and Japanese buffets, and disagree on the extent that K is responsible for Cabeswater's disappearance. There are some tears--but possibly not from who you would expect. Calla gives our first solid hints about how time works in The Chicken Cycle, and we award our most expansive MVC yet! DEEP DIVE: Stereotypes and Media Tropes relating to Joseph Kavinsky (from approx. the 20:29 minute mark to 30:01, depending on your player) CAUTION: In our Deep Dive we discuss the broad history of media portrayals of queerness and ethnicity. While we always try to be as sensitive as possible, we understand that this is a much more nuanced topic than we can possibly cover in 10 minutes. Please exercise caution while listening if you find this topic personally sensitive. Love! Welcome to Season 2 Episode 20, where we cover Chapters 15-18 of The Dream Thieves! The Gangsey head back to visit their mystical talking tree friends for the first time since Adam made his bargain, but what's this? A whole forest is gone! The Pig once again breaks down in a plot-convenient way, and Ronan has terrible dreams… some of which escape his head. We talk about what a drama queen Ronan can be, how Gansey can apparently use a smooth pick-up line on everyone except Blue, the parallels between Ronan's mask dream and incidents in The Raven King, and how even Goddesses can sometimes make poor fashion choices. Welcome to Season 2 Episode 22, where we cover Chapters 23-26 of The Dream Thieves! The Gray Man breaks into Monmouth while flirting with Maura, the Gangsey and Orla make a sweaty and frustrating boat trip to discover some enigmatic clues, and Blue meets her mom's new suitor while rehearsing The Little Mermaid with Noah. We talk about the Gray Man's life motto, who has the cutest pet names (spoiler: it's Mr. Gray's rental car), and if we would rather live at 300 Fox Way or The Barns. Shannon has an adorable accent, Nievita acts out a piece of fan art (great podcast content for sure), we wonder Who Wore It Best, and we all find out why Alfred was So Damned Great! Welcome to Season 2 Episode 26, where we cover Chapters 40-43 of The Dream Thieves! Gansey gets disturbing texts from Ronan's phone, Adam has gone missing, and Ronan and Kavinsky are out having a Dagobah moment. We tackle (no pun intended) the Great Dick Pic Controversy, and question how many times Shannon read through the books before she thought Ronan was “okay”. We find out what autocorrect has decided Glendower's poet should be named, and talk about a disturbing number of bodies stuffed in trees. Shannon wonders if we should continue our Fast and the Furious franchise by watching Tokyo Drift and comes down firmly on the side of Team Adam, and Nievita talks about her dream Raven Cycle cosplay accessory. We also mangle a lot of Welsh words. We're sorry. We tried. Episode Summary: Welcome to Episode 8, where we cover Chapters 23-24 of The Raven Boys! Finally, Cabeswater! We start to feel like Maggie might be smacking us upside the head with all of the foreshadowing in this chapter, because basically the whole plot of the Raven Cycle is laid out here. Gansey shoots finger guns, Ronan claims his territory, Adam is the resident Smart Guy, and Blue finds herself inside of a tree for the first time. Physics are 100% solid in this series, Shannon walks us through the ins and outs the “science” of using EMFs in ghost hunting, and Nievita drops a truth bomb about Blue's nickname. Episode Summary: Is it finally here? Is this actually real?! Is it happening, or are we just DREAMING? Welcome to Season 2 Episode 16, where we cover the Prologue-Chap.3 of The Dream Thieves! We are indeed BACK with our first episode covering the second book of The Raven Cycle, The Dream Thieves! Join us as we introduce our favorite hit man, talk about the fairytale-esque stories of the Lynch family, Nievita reveals that she has discovered the birthdate of Niall Lynch, Shannon reveals that she shares one of Ronan's favorite things, and we both reveal that we are huge nerds by making Monty Python references. (Just kidding on that last one--you already knew we were huge nerds.) And we want you to tell us… what should trigger our Season 2 Drinking Game?
