Michigan St. U. peeps may remember John Magee. John held several positions at the U, including Exec Staff Assistant, College of Arts and Letters, and staff assistant in Ag & Nat Resources. Today, John serves as Assistant VP & Chief International Officer at Madonna University, Lavonia, MI. John and I continue to get together (he introduced me to his brother Jim along the way), and we talk about a range of issues. One issue (the focus here) is what John and Jim (also an internationalist) have learned about working internationally. "It's not about the deal," they argue, and it's certainly not about mining other countries for money and students. Rather, it's about establishing meaningful relationships and creating partnerships that benefit all parties involved. Not earth-shattering, you say? Well...ego, hubris, arrogance, and institutional self-centeredness (what another colleague calls "The Organization First" syndrome) make it more difficult (than easier) to put into practice. So here are John and Jim on "It's Not About the Deal."

HOW SHOULD WE UNDERSTAND THESE TWO BIBLICAL LAWS? ------------------------- Leviticus 19:18 - "...you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the YHVH." Matthew 22:35-40 - "Then one of them, a lawyer (scribe), asked him a question, testing him, and saying, “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?”Yeshua said to him, “ ‘You shall love YHVH your Elohim (God) with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” -------------------------- Yeshua (Jesus) answered a question from one of the legal minds of his day, and with his response, he validated Leviticus 19:18 as the second most important commandment from the Word of God - "you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am YHVH." But for me, this brings up another question: If I am to learn to love my neighbor, am I to first learn to love myself? This is a pretty tall order for some due to many personal and unresolved life issues! Conversely, if one is a narcissist, then true love for another is not even possible. So, for those who struggle with personal self-esteem issues, are we to then embrace the personality of an empath who learns to never say "NO" to the needs of another? In the Bible, "Love" expresses itself in a very specific way and we would do well to apply it and live it out, because biblical love, as it is written about in Deuteronomy 6:4-9, Leviticus 19:18, and taught by Yeshua in Matthew 22:34-40 is not about loving yourself in order to love your neighbor. Biblical love is always about giving and passing it on from the source of all love that is given to us. However, before this can happen, we must receive YHVH's Love. Therefore, Yeshua taught (Matthew 10:8), "Freely you have received, freely give." This is the basis from the Word of God for the biblical lesson of Leviticus 19:18 as I think it should be understood from Hebrew grammar and context: “I AM THE SOURCE OF YOUR LOVE TO/TOWARDS YOUR NEIGHBOUR, AS/LIKE HE (MESSIAH) IS UNTO YOU." Therefore, biblical love is NOT ABOUT first loving yourself; biblical love is about divine Love that is first given to us and then by receiving it, we are to give it out. No questions. No “yeah buts.” He didn't even know where he was going. But he started moving anyways. Abraham understood something about God many of us miss: God is the God of the journey, not the destination. And trusting God as we walk into the unknown is challenging for so many of us because we crave clarity. But when we bring that mentality to life with God, things don't go so well. By the end of this new series, The Journey, you'll understand how to adopt a journey mindset, what it looks like to journey well with God, and how to spot the things holding you back from moving forward in faith in the midst of the unknown. Discussion Questions What was your biggest takeaway from the teaching? What do you think are some of the main things that hold you back from journeying well with God? We'll sometimes say things like, “I don't think I would be who I am today if I hadn't had to go through that.” That's a journey statement. What are some of the journeys God has used to change you? How would you describe the difference between clarity and confidence? What are some of the things you've found helpful in developing a journey mindset? How will you begin living out the truths of this teaching this week?

Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! “Everything you do in life is about serving another human being, and as long as you stay focused on that, you’ll never burn out. You may get tired, we all get tired, but you’ll never get bored of it because you’ll always understand what you’re here to do is to help other people. That is always energizing.” - Howard Behar You may have heard of servant leadership and the transformative power of it in our organizations, careers and lives, but for most people, they’ve never seen it in action so it remains a vague and elusive concept. To address this important topic and to help us learn specifically how to embody servant leadership in our lives, I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to speak with an individual who has dedicated his entire life to servant leadership, and embodies it both professionally and personally. Howard Behar's career in business spans over 50 years, all in consumer oriented businesses covering several industries. He retired from Starbucks Coffee after 21 years where he led both the domestic business, as President of North America, and was the founding President of Starbucks International. During his tenure, he participated in the growth of the company from 28 stores to over 15,000 stores spanning five continents. He served on the Starbucks Board of Directors for 12 years before retiring. Hailed as “a hero of conscious capitalism,” “a passionate advocate for leading with purpose,” and a devoted student and teacher of the Servant Leadership Model, Howard’s motivational message inspires everyone to be a servant leader and to lead with and from their values first. As a renowned leader, speaker, author and mentor, Howard’s wisdom, generosity, and level of integrity have had a profound impact on thousands of people who have been touched by his example, books, and speaking. As the ultimate servant leader, Howard is known for such memorable lessons as “The Person Who Sweeps the Floor Should Choose the Broom” and “Only the Truth Sounds Like the Truth.” Howard is also the author of the classic book It’s Not About the Coffee, a guide to leading by putting people first, and The Magic Cup, a parable about the power of personal values, and he now travels the world speaking to leaders, organizations, and students. In today’s episode, Howard reveals the steps you can take to become a servant leader yourself, along with his powerful “6 P’s” that can become a powerful framework for the way you live. Living these traits will make a profound impact not only on your own life, but in the lives of every other human being with whom you interact. There’s so much in life right now that can’t be fixed or changed. The harder option is to listen, ground and feel. In this episode, I walk you through how to say nothing as a listener and in so doing, effectively lighten the emotional loads of those around you. 1:00 “I hear you, I’m with you and I’m not trying to fix or change you”. 1:26 Being present with the unfixable is an advanced skill most people can’t do. 1:52 I talk you through – in slow motion – what happens when you are listening to someone’s discomfort. 2:48 The urge to fix or change is like an emotional itch. 3:28 We are wired to need one another’s validation to help us know we matter. 4:06 Here are 4 options for how to “say nothing”. 5:55 You can also just ask directly what they need. 6:30 “It’s Not About The Nail” 8:08 When it comes to being present to injustice, we must do our grief work. 8:44 By listening and saying nothing, you lighten the weight of the other person’s burdens. 9:13 This week’s homework. Loving the skin you're in doesn't always come easy. Sometimes it comes with daily affirmations, doing things for yourself, and accepting that somedays, body neutrality is the place you'll be in that day. FrankthePegasus joins us for this intimate, inspiring, and hilarious episode about body positivity. About Frank the Pegasus Frank the Pegasus is a full-time content creator on Twitch and YouTube. She focuses on on sex positivity, body acceptance, and mental health advocacy! She's been streaming for almost 5 years, is super queer, and is a big lover of simulation and collection games. Fank and Monika geek out for a really long time about birds and plants. It's incredible. You're welcome. Geeking about about loving ourselves is so cool, honestly. We talked about the importance of doing things for YOU, that light YOU up and make YOU feel good - like seriously, friends, when's the last time you prioritised YOURSELF!? Tell us the truth! How absolutely sick are you of those bullshit fatphobic stereotypes we get from the media? Because we're furious about them. It's exhausting watching fat bodies be protrayed as evil, lazy, unkempt and unclean, and a whole host of other stereotypes. We can do better than this. Frank's best advice? Take care of yourself because you love yourself!!! It seems like such a simple concept, but we all know it's easier said than done. What do you do for yourself just to show you that you love you? That's a lot of yous but we really wanna know! A huuuuge topic of discussion here is removing the value you give to society from the way you look. You are more than your looks, you're more than your body, you're more than face. You don't owe society or anyone for that matter anything. And your value is NOT ABOUT how you look. We promise you that! Have you ever practiced Positive Body Affirmations? Frank says they're one of her daily rituals to remind herself how much she loves the skin she's in. If a positive body affirmation seems too far for you, what about a neutral statement - Frank recommends "I have arms" and we love that! We'd also like to remind you to surround yourself with bodies of all shapes and sizes. This is especially important right now, when we're all living our existence online. Curate your social media feeds, especially the visual based ones like Intsa, to have more body types on there. We read a study once that asked you to scroll through your Insta feed and to count how many posts you passed before you found a body that didn't look like you. If it's more than 10, your feed is simply not diverse enough! Have you ever done an experiment like this? It's a LIFE. CHANGER. Please do it! Frank also wants you to do the things that make your internet experience better. That's not only curating your feed, but it's also choosing not to go on any triggering sites, removing toxic people and words from your timelines and follow lists, and making a point to create a positive environment for yourself. But what about those days on stream when you just don't feel like showing your face? Let's normalise not being on camera. Women are under so much pressure to look a certain way in order to succeed on Twitch, but honestly - why? Like, we don't owe you pretty. We also don't owe you our face all the time. If we're not feeling it, we're just gonna have that camera turned off. We also talk about the importance of body neutrality, which is sooooooooooo gooooooood and something we need to talk about more - it doesn't always have to body positive!! Plus the dangers of SnapChat (for example) filters that completely change the way you look. And most importantly? PLEASE be GENTLE with yourself. You are so, so loved and so valued. What helps you on your bad days? Why on your good days do you feel good? Quotes "If you're listening to this and the only reason you play games is to enjoy a game, that's a good enough reason to play a game." "If your feed is lacking fat bodies, it's hard for you to normalise fat bodies. Get more fat bodies on your feed." "All I want to do is accept the body that I'm in and accept it as the meat sack that is carrying me through my life." "Even if you don't love yourself, you are loved. Sometimes putting confidence in somebody else's love of you is the thing that helps you get through that day. You love them and you trust them, so they can't be wrong." Ha! This week is a FUN one. I describe how we get really worked up in our heads about our love for our favorite drinks and how this creates a very strong desire for the drink which often leads to over-drinking. I've coined this concept 'porning out.' Similar to fantasizing on how awesome sex would be we fantasize on how good that glass of wine will be. But if you really pay attention to this and look at the truth and the reality of that glass of wine you will quickly see it isn't as good as the story in your head. Tune in, it's a good one y'all! **Interested in joining the Stop Over-drinking and Start Living coaching program? click the link below and watch all 3 videos, read through the information and then click >>APPLY

Today’s guest, Dr. Rob Bell, is a sports psychology coach who focuses on mental toughness for athletes of all kinds. However, mental toughness goes beyond the football field or the basketball court. In Rob’s mind, we’re all athletes, our offices are just different. What is mental toughness? In Rob’s eyes, mental toughness is the ability to not only accomplish your goals but also to handle setbacks. While mental toughness alone won’t give you a trophy, lack of mental toughness can cause you to fail. Some Battles are Worth Fighting, Even If We LoseRob’s favorite aspect of being in business is the ability to take shots even if they aren’t winning ones. He says it’s all about the opportunity. As entrepreneurs, we have the power to choose what shots we take. Why not take as many as possible? You never know what the outcome will be until you try. Rob also emphasizes the importance of knowing your worth. It’s easy to be influenced by all the “no’s” and negative thoughts surrounding your work. Find your worth and charge accordingly for what you do best. You may still hear “no”, but it will make hearing “yes” much more valuable. Every Door Has a HingeRob’s wisdom for fellow business owners is to always look for the hinges in life. We always hear how doors open and close with opportunities, but it’s really the hinge that directs the door. What are the hinges in life? It could be one person, one moment, one decision that can make a big difference in your life. Sometimes, we can only see the impact of these hinges much later in life. Rob’s advice is to appreciate the journey, as that’s where all the growth and transformation comes from. Rob is ready to work with athletes of all kinds. In addition to his coaching services, Rob also hosts the “15 Minutes of Mental Toughness” podcast and is the author of several best-selling books, including “Puke and Rally: It’s Not About the Setback, It’s About the Comeback”Are you ready to increase your mental toughness? Tips To Reach Your Target Audience With Mike Maynard Breaking through the virtual barrier to improve your business You might be thinking now that a lot of us are working from home, how do we reach the right audience? Before COVID-19 you could meet people by doing lunch meetings and networking things where you might be able to find the right person interested in your product or service. We've got Mike Maynard here from NapierB2B, and he's going to go through some solutions and how you can find the right audience. So Mike, how would you go about making sure that you can reach an audience from home? Mike: That's a great question to start off with Josh. It's hugely challenging to reach people at home. Our clients who we work with tend to sell to big business, and almost all of the people they wanted to reach sat in an office and they could send salespeople to meet them. Now obviously, COVID has completely changed that. Even if people are working in the office, you still can't get salespeople out there to meet them. So what you need to do is understand what sort of media and what sort of information people are consuming at home and how that's changed from when they're in the office. There Are Multiple Channels Out There So it comes down to being in their social feeds, being in their news feeds and creating a strategy to be able to track down the decision-maker in the business? Mike: We're seeing clients have success with different tactics. I think one of the things that's really clear, is that different audiences, different sorts of people you want to reach with your marketing, are actually going to prefer different channels. So absolutely social, for sure is bigger. You look at all the stats activity and social media is way up. Now, people are working from home, but equally don't rule out things. For example, the good old email newsletter. Great newsletters can actually be very valuable today, particularly in some industries where perhaps people aren't receiving the trade magazines they might have been reading in the past. With social media, do you think the amount of noise is becoming a problem, or the message getting washed out? Battling Against the Noise Mike: Whatever channel you choose, you've got to battle against noise. I If you're trying to use email marketing, absolutely, you're still battling against noise and spam filters, trying to remove that noise. Unfortunately, sometimes that spam filter is going to think your messages are noise rather than signal. So absolutely, I think everybody's battling against noise. We've seen a big move online, particularly from some of the companies who were perhaps a bit more focused on traditional media previously. All that's doing is adding to the noise. Now, of course, we have seen that some of the paid channels actually become slightly less competitive. So for example, if you want to advertise travel destinations on Facebook, now's a pretty good time globally, because there's not much travel advertising going out on Facebook. However, whether it's good for your business is a very different question. So it's not the case that everything has got more noisy and everything has got more difficult, but it's always the case that: If you don't stand out and you don't add value, then people are not going to listen to you. So I would forget about the competition and how much noise or not there isn't any one channel and work out how you can create content and information that's actually going to be of interest to the people you want to influence. Focus On Your Target Market It comes down to making sure that you understand your target market, making sure that you've profiled your ideal client. Mike: Absolutely. So we're all about focus. I think today, it's not just about having your ideal client, but it's also understanding the individuals within that client. For example, let's say you're looking to market an IT services company. You might want to talk to somebody who's the I.T director, I.T manager, but you also want to reach the CEO of the company, and potentially even the finance director or the guy in charge of the money. All three of those people will have very different thoughts about what they want from an IT services company. So what you need to do is not just tailor your message for your ideal company, but also tailor the messages for each of those three people within it to make sure that they hear information that addresses their concerns, their worries, and makes them feel you're the right business for them. That information could also vary depending on who you're talking to. It could be analytical information, it could be emotional information. Once you found out that you've got that, then it just comes down to the channels that you need to be able to talk to or find people on. There's lots of different places out there that you could be throwing your content up. Your target will probably be on LinkedIn and might have an Instagram account too, but, do you want to spread the message too thin, or do you want to focus? Mike: You absolutely want to focus. I think you need to find out what really works for you. One of the interesting things is you can't always predict that, and we have companies where one has fantastic results on social media, and the other will have email as their primary vehicle for reaching people. Both of them will be doing great, both clearly doing the right thing. Yet, it's different channels. For me, there's a lot of different factors that affect what's going to be the most important channel. There's no point marketing in a place where your audience doesn't visit. If your audience is never on Instagram, don't go to Instagram, it’s a waste of time. But if you're where they are, then it's about: Building a presence Building authority Building an approach that works for you, and also works for your customer It's about finding a platform or a channel, that's going to make a difference for you. That's going to reach your audience and a platform or channel where you can actually contribute. Going back to marketing with Managed IT services, you know that there are some companies with awesome podcasts, there are other companies that are not doing podcasts because they're much more introverted. I can say over the years, we've tried many different things. It comes down to working with what works. One of the things we do that we find can help connect you with the right person is we send out postcards to our ideal clients. We found no one gets a handwritten card in the post. So that's one way that we've made sure that we stand out a little bit. Current Trends In Online Marketing With Facebook and any sort of online marketing, I've noticed a trend and I just wanted to see what your thoughts were. Do you think at the moment businesses are pushing it more or pulling back? What are you seeing out there? Mike: I think there's a mix of approaches. We did some research amongst the industries we work in. It really was interesting to see that there was a group of people who were carrying on as they've always done, there was a group of people who were slashing marketing budgets and a group that were actually increasing. We saw the same with our clients. Some of that is due to how people approach marketing and where they see marketing as a cost or where they see it as an investment. We have a Managed IT services client, who literally more than doubled their spend with us. When everyone's working from home, there are huge demands on I.T systems which I'm sure you know. Whereas we had other clients where they've cut back because their business has fallen. Targeting Specific Accounts Can Work If you are doing digital marketing and you are trying to be in people's newsfeeds, are you better off tracking down the decision-maker for the account as a marketing process? Mike: I think the more focused you can be the better. So just sending out content and hoping it reaches the right person is clearly the wrong approach. What we're seeing is a lot of our clients moving to targeting specific accounts. So, LinkedIn is the primary platform for most people where you can target by industry, you can target by job role, and you can even target by company. You need a certain audience size, you can't literally target one person at one company when you do that. But you can build up really focused audience lists. We're seeing people do the same thing on email, as well, I'm being very focused in my work on building their email list, and making sure they understand within that email list. Different industries might have different concerns, and the IT director wants to hear very different things from the CEO of a company. That's hard work and it takes time. This is one of the reasons why I do say that, that people shouldn't try and do everything. Just trying to spray stuff across almost all channels is the wrong thing. Doing one thing well is definitely the best approach. How to Get Started If you don't have an email list and no digital leads, where do you start? Mike: It's one of these great questions that really needs to be answered with well, it depends. Where you start is your best guess as to what's going to give you the best return. Let's say you sell an engineering product. The big concern from all your customers is how to get prototypes of this mechanical engineering product. Perhaps you want to produce a lead magnet around 3D printing, for example. I would use that lead magnet across a number of different channels to see which one drives the most interest, because that's going to then start giving you an indication of where your customers are actually looking at information and looking for content. There are all sorts of different ways you can do that. You can do that through SEO, you can do it through paid search, you can do it on social media, you can even do it through targeted ads. We're seeing clients using Google ads to target display ads on particular websites. The one thing I would say as well as if you don't have an email list, the one thing you probably do have is visitors to your website. So retargeting is like a poor man's version of an email list where you can actually target ads to people who visited your website. That certainly is a good approach if you know that people who you can sell a product to are actually visiting the website. For anyone that's not sure what retargeting is, it’s where: If someone comes to you, you can hide a little sneaky thing on their computer that lets you continue to market to them afterwards. It's fantastic for some businesses, for example, if you're a florist and you want to send flowers out and remind everyone the week before Valentine's Day, “hey, don't forget your partner”, it's great to know that you're in front of mind, even if they may have not have done something with you for 12 months. When it comes down to retargeting, the costs are significantly more cost-effective and efficient than virgin marketing when you are marketing to people based on long-tail keywords through AdWords. It's definitely a great way to go about it Understanding Your Sales Cycle What would be an average timeline that you'd expect going from A to B to actually seeing some dollars trickle through for a business in the IT Professional Services industry? Mike: That is so hard to say, but if we look at our clients, some of their sales cycles are pretty much immediate. They're eCommerce vendors, so they can pretty much immediately generate sales. But they've already got that email list. We have another client that makes baggage handling systems for airports and their sales cycle is 20 years. So 20 years from starting marketing all the way through. I think the first thing you've got to understand is how long your sales cycle is in your particular business. In professional services, you can certainly generate leads very quickly using lead magnets and producing great content should generate leads pretty much straight away. Converting those leads that sales process is very difficult. It can depend on a lot of things. For example, in your business, Josh, where you're selling I.T services, if they've already got an incumbent company, then you probably don't really have an opportunity to get their business until the contract comes up for renewal. So there can be a sales cycle of anything from a month to a year, depending on how long is left on the contract. Don’t Forget About Phone Calls I think it's very hard to say how quickly you can get revenue because it's very dependent. But the reality is you can get leads. At the end of the day, marketing can do a lot of things, but you've just got to pick up the phone. even today, with people working from home, if someone's interested, you've got to pick up the phone and talk to them. That will ultimately start driving that sale. Getting back on the phone is 100% something to be in front of mind, keep the personal touch. We use a lot of automation, we're always talking about automation, but I don't think you should ever automate the human connection. That's something that you should always just keep so you have that authenticity in your voice, keep the emotion, keep that connection with someone as opposed to just sending them just the newsletter. Content Ideas That Work A lot of people always use the term “I don't have enough time”. I think it's just that they probably don't want to spend their time on doing certain things, such as content creation. A lot of people don't like that. But it is one of the cornerstone pieces of a good digital marketing campaign. How can you get people out of that rut? Mike: Since my business is an agency I probably should be saying everyone employ agencies, they're a fantastic solution. But that is not always the case. Sometimes you've just got to bite the bullet and do things slightly differently if you're trying to generate some content. If you're really not the sort of person that wants to sit down in front of a computer and type out a white paper, an article, or an ebook, it's actually very easy. Just record yourself talking about it, and get it transcribed. I think one of the biggest challenges people have is getting that first draft of something down. So anyway you can do that, whether it's just scribbling, speaking into a microphone, or have someone just chat to you. You can transcribe it, and then turn that into an E-book or a white paper. All those sort of things make it easier to start. You can bring in an agency and they can make the quality of the text that much better and they can make the layout look beautiful, but the end of the day, if you don't start with something that's helpful to your audience, an agency is stuck, they can't do anything. However pretty we make it look, it's not going to help that potential customer, it's not going to get them to pick the phone up to you. So find the way that works for you to get that first draft. Then keep editing and editing as it is much easier than writing that first draft, I can assure you that once you've got that first bit of information down, it's so much easier. I always think the first five minutes is the hardest when it comes to any task you don't want to do. It doesn't matter if it's public speaking and you're talking in front of an audience of 20 or 2000. The first five minutes is the hardest. I used to hate making content, but I've fallen in love with it. Everyone out there that is looking for a client, as long as you've got a business that's out there to make a difference you should have a story that goes with that as to how you're doing something different. It shouldn't be driven by money. As soon as you start writing it down and you start talking about what it is and how your solution differs to other people, you'll start finding the people that resonate and become raving fans. Mike: Just getting started is the key. I think people will find it much easier going forward, there's millions of tools on the market that are going to help you, whether it be creating emails, or whether it's creating E-books, there's tools to help you do that automatically. But the reality is, it's all about having a point of view. I can guarantee if you're in business, and your business is making money, you have a point of view. That point of view matters to somebody because you've got customers that value that point of view. We're seeing a lot of people struggle to get content created, because they feel that something written there's got to be 20 times better than something verbal, and often that's not the case. Avoid Buying Spun Content I've seen a lot pop up more and more recently is people that are using spun content. They purchase subscription content and make a few newsletters for your industry that you send out to your clients. They are vaguely about your industry, and my personal thought is knowing how much work goes into developing content and making sure my brand and my message comes through is that I don’t like this option. What are your thoughts? Mike: I think the answer is people are not looking for you to be a trade magazine. They've got trade magazines for that, they've got other newsletters, they've heard this information 100 times. So yes, if you've generated your own content, is the quality going to be as good? Maybe not, but is the value to your potential customer going to be higher? Absolutely. It's not about getting something that looks pretty. To me, the great thing about digital, perhaps the one thing I think the digital has done to completely change marketing is that marketing is no longer subjective. I can tell you, we run tests with ads. We'll have two ads, and almost unanimously, both within the agency within the client, everyone will go, “I love that ad” but I hate that second one and we will run the two ads as an A/B test. The one that everybody hates performs best. So subjective opinions, particularly your own subjective opinion, is quite often wrong. If you keep doing something, whether it's an email newsletter, or a podcast or a blogging, you will get better. I can tell you, we started our own podcast. Not only was I terrible in the first podcast interview, but actually I've managed to lose the recording as well. Every time you start, you know, you look back and you think, my first attempt was awful. Maybe it is, but actually, there are still people who think it's great. Remember to Measure Your Engagement I completely agree. Make sure you're measuring what you're putting out there so that you can see the results of your fruit. If you're going to the effort to make sure that you can see people are reading and clicking scrolling through and how long they're spending their session times on it. Whatever the content is, ask for reviews. This is something that people don't do, but ask your client. They may give you some feedback that you wouldn't have even thought about and give you information from a perspective of your client as opposed to what you think your client wants. Mike: I totally agree. Also, the one thing I'd add to the measurement is to measure something that matters. One of the worst things about digital is that it's given people any number of different metrics they can use to measure their marketing campaign. We work with a small engineering company, and they're doing some email marketing. If you look at the click-through rate, there's a group of people that have fantastic click-through rates, in fact, they click on every single link in every single email. So measuring the click-through rate is crazy, because it's not a human doing it, it's clearly a spam filter that's looking at the email and making sure that there's no links that you shouldn't visit. Ironically, we found out for sure that one of these was purely spam, because we found out the guy who we were sending to was on furlough, and didn't even have access to his email. It comes down to how you can measure whether what you're doing is generating either quality leads or opportunities, or ultimately customers. At the end of the day, as a business owner, I don't make any more money, if my click-through rate goes up 10%. I make more money if I get more customers. I think people really need to think about that and not get dazzled by some of the sparkly bits on tools. Mike’s Book Recommendation The metrics have to matter. I like his story there on the spam filtering, because that happens quite a lot. I wanted to ask you one last question. What would you say is your favourite book that influenced the direction that you've got in your business? Mike: I'm going to pick a book that is a little bit different. I read Lance Armstrong's autobiography, “It's Not About the Bike”, which is interesting. Lance, I mean, he is a very interesting character. He's got clearly a huge number of character flaws and is certainly very imperfect. He wrote the book before the emission of cheating with drugs, so he's still denying taking drugs in the book. But he talks a lot about his life and his cancer treatment. There's a bit in the book that kind of talks about the people who survive cancer and the people who die. He said, there are optimistic people who survive, they're optimistic people who die. People who really look after themselves and survive, some of them died. He really brings home the fact that you can do a lot to get yourself in the best position, but sometimes there's things you can't control. We could do everything right as a business, as an agency, and COVID could still take the business down. It doesn't make us a worse business. That's really influenced my thinking, all you can do is really do the right thing and then hope the circumstances make you successful. We all know who Lance Armstrong is - what he’s known for, and what he’s not. I just wanted to talk to him about cancer. When I got diagnosed back in September 2018 one of the first things I did was go buy his book, “It’s Not About the Bike: My Journey Back to Life.” I needed to know how Lance beat the advanced testicular cancer that had already spread to his lungs and brain by the time they discovered it, when he was just 25 years old and at his physical prime. So that’s what Lance and I talked about. Lucky me, I got to spend an hour with the guy who unknowingly helped me warrior up and bring my A-Game to my own cancer battle. Like Lance said in his book, “What other choice is there but to hope? We have two options - medically and emotionally: Give Up...or Fight Like Hell.” I’ll opt for the latter, just like Lance. @lancearmstrong www.lancearmstrong.com More at www.notimetowasteproject.com or follow @notimetowasteproject

This week we were joined by Juanita Campbell Rasmus to help us (re)think how to BE. "It felt as though every nerve in my body was popping. Imagine large strong hands slowly applying pressure while breaking a family-size package of uncooked, dry spaghetti. I was the spaghetti. Breaking down one piece at a time." This is how Juanita begins the wise, frank, and witty account of what she later called "The Crash" and what her counselor labeled "a major depressive episode." This experience landed Juanita, a busy pastor, mother, and community leader, in bed. In addition to exhaustion and depression, on the spiritual front she experienced a dark night of the soul. When everything in her life finally came to a stop, she found that she had to learn to be―with herself and with God―all over again. This was a wonderful conversation filled with spiritual wisdom and guidance. Enjoy! "Being in touch with [the essence] of ourselves as we make financial decisions is as good as it gets. Money is a store of life energy, and when we can channel that life energy into an expression of what is most dear to our soul, an exciting alignment takes place between our financial and spiritual lives . . . more than just having enough, our essence is deeply loving, contented, and grateful, not from any effort but as its most natural expression . . . In fact, when we are identified with that part of us that already has enough, that has arrived, that feels efficiency rather than scarcity, impulses of love and generosity arise naturally and without effort." —Brent Kessel, author of It's Not About the Money Money can seem to be the fix for everything or the curse, but it need not be either, and can be in our control, largely when we shift how we approach our view and role of money in our life. Today I would like to share with you key insights I discovered after reading Brent Kessel's book It's Not About the Money in which he dives into the unconscious emotional psychological nature money plays in our lives and how and why we make the decisions we make - for better or worse. 1.Understand how your emotions are related to your relationship with money What is your Core Story when it comes to your relationship with money? When you understand this inner dialogue that is unconsciously being told and accepted, thus guiding your decisions when it comes to what you believe will make you happy, you begin to take control of your relationship with money and improve the quality of your life. Why? Because you are now living consciously, and your decision making improves as it aligns with your true essence as Brent Kessel describes - your true self, what will make you feel truly content, outside of what society has impressed upon you. Below are a couple of the questions to begin asking yourself to get to the truth of what your Core Story actually is: What is your most painful memory related to money? When have you been most positively and negatively moved by money? What were you taught was most important about money? What is your biggest fear about money? While we need to live in the present to live well, understanding the past events of our lives and how they have scripted our thinking about money is vital. The Core Story is accepted Kessel writes because "whatever the content, with the unconscious hope that if we follow it, we'll be protected from feeling difficult or painful emotions." Simply understanding what your Core Story is not going to improve your relationship with money. Rather, it is an ongoing job that begins with awareness, but then is followed up with "skill, intention, and perseverance to lessen the hold of our unconscious condition . . . we must keep working to identify and retain the healthiest parts of our story's message - [for example, the good saving habits, the on-time bill paying, etc.] - while at the same time letting go of the extreme and unhealthy behaviors and attitudes it has engendered in us." 2. Do the necessary work within to achieve the outer results you seek "Though outer wealth rarely leads to inner wealth, inner wealth often does lead to outer wealth." Kessel speaks of the Middle Way being the chosen path to take in order to have a healthy relationship with money and our understanding of wealth. In other words, "true freedom lies neither in self-indulgence nor in austere asceticism". When we choose to do the inner work that is necessary, it requires of each of us to use our mind, and think critically, which means that we must think well and not rely on defaults and habits that are unproductive to our goal of cultivating "healthy wealth". I especially appreciated the author's sharing of his conversation with the Dalai Lama when he [the Dalai Lama] responded to the question about a method for happiness for Americans. "When there's too much stress or too much worry, look inward! Read more. Think. Trying to find the answer from outside yourself is nonsense! Think more." What thinking exactly though, are we talking about? Start with #1, understand your Core Story, deepen your awareness, and begin asking the "why"s - Why do you feel this decision would reduce your stress or increase your happiness? Why do you feel owning [fill in the blank what you are considering purchasing/paying for] will be a smart decision for you life? Why do you feel [insert negative emotion] when certain things in your life are happening? Why do you feel [insert positive emotion] when certain things are happening in your life? And continue asking and exploring - the four "W" questions are part of thinking well - Who, What, When, Where, Why. "When we are caught in extreme thoughts, beliefs, and conditioning, we sow the seeds of financial discontent." 3. Become fluent in the language of the Wanting Mind "The Wanting Mind continually takes us out of the present moment in its attempts to make us happy in some better tomorrow." —Brent Kessel True contentment requires that we remain present in our daily lives. The Wanting Minds requires that we live in the future. A clear conflict. If we are content, we are not wanting, and if we are wanting we cannot be content. True freedom from "want" is knowledge of how it works. Whenever an impulse to buy anything arises, a croissant, a clothing item online, anything large or small, "look sincerely at the root of the behaviors your mind has always told you would make you happy". Social conditioning has been happening our entire lives and will not end, but when we are aware of the attempt to social condition, and become clear about whether it is helpful or hindering, we can respond rather than react to the impulses of wanting when they arrive, thus making the best decision in that moment to cultivate a healthy approach to wealth and our financial situation. 4. Trust your innate financial wisdom: financial planning and great investment advice is not enough "When you are listening to your innate wisdom, you can feel a very deep part of you relax and let go. It will feel pleasing, calming and wholehearted. There will be an absence of pressure." Kessel has readers in his book return to their 4-year-old self, such a young age that we don't have a clue what investing in the stock market is, what a pension is, compound interest, debt, etc. The reason he encourages readers to return to our young self is to try to discover or be reminded of our most true self. What is it that sincerely brings us joy? What delights us? Sparks our curiosity? Prompts us to lose all track of time? Each of us will have our own answers, and even if, like me, you cannot fully remember what you thought at that age, you can remember where you were in your life - where you lived, with whom, etc. - and at least for me, I know how I felt. Whether I was secure or fearful? Was I completely oblivious to the world and didn't have a care in the world or was I full of anxiety? Thankfully, my memories are all positive and I am drawing from this insight to guide my money decisions and investment and savings moving forward more consciously. To address the idea of seeking out a financial advisor. It is absolutely a worthwhile idea to find a financial advisor you trust as they are the experts in the business of the financial business sector. They can be our teacher to better understand how investing works and what our options are, but once you have that information and can ask more questions when they arise, you need to return to your innate voice. What would make you feel truly content? For myself, when I purchased my home, I didn't seek permission from my financial advisor at the time as to whether I should take certain funds and use them for my down payment. I just knew I could and did it. I knew what would bring me contentment. I knew what investments were worth it to me and the life I wanted to live, but I am grateful for her expertise so that I knew the financial rules/laws, etc.. 5. Be still and just be A common piece of advice when it comes to making a purchase that we are not sure about, or that is significant enough that it will change our lives in some way, is to wait or sleep on it for 24-hours. This is good advice, but Kessel suggests doing something additionally and possibly most importantly - examine why you are really wanting to make the purchase. Do you feel it will bring you freedom, more peace, less headaches? What are the overarching beliefs derived from your Core Story and/or societal conditioning that have taught you these beliefs? Do you fully accept them or does something within not feel settled? In other words, again, respond rather than react. Think and be still, rather than blindly doing. Money is a fundamental component of our lives whether we want it to be or not. It moves the world, lack of it can halt the world, but understanding our relationship to it and with it is what will elevate our personal world and thus improve the quality of our lives. Our minds need and can achieve peace of mind when it comes to money. After all, when our minds are relaxed and unstressed, they make better decisions, see things more clearly and think well. It is understanding the psychology and the emotional mentality that money provokes within us that will give us the driver's seat so that we can make the best decisions for the life we want to live.
