Kikkan was born in Salt Lake City, Utah and both her parents were skiers. Kikkan was wearing ski boots and sliding down the hill before she could even walk. At age 3, Kikkan's family moved to Alaska where she first got involved with nordic/cross country skiing. Kikkan walks us through her progression from middle school nordic ski racing to her Olympic gold medal. At age 19, Kikkan and her coach mapped out her 10 year roadmap. Kikkan kept her head down, kept working hard and 16 years later she accomplished her lifelong goal of winning a gold medal. Kikkan tells us about taking time off from competing to start her family and later taking her son on the road as she ramped back up. Kikkan shares her breast cancer survival story which started shortly after she won her gold medal. Kikkan was conflicted about sharing her struggle publicly, but in the end she decided that getting support and talking about her journey would benefit her and other women. Kikkan has become an advocate for early detection and a supporter of numerous cancer research programs. There are a few things that come up again and again when we talk to makers. These mental roadblocks don't serve any real purpose – they just get in the way! It's really easy to feel like you're stuck on a hamster wheel. You're busy – really busy. It's not like you're not working hard. You're moving and doing all the things, but when you stop and look at your progress, it doesn't seem like you're actually getting anywhere. We all feel like this at some point after starting a business. It's completely normal. You just need to learn how to get off the wheel and start taking steps forward. There are a few basic rules to remember that can completely turn your company's growth around. A lot of you are scared of change. But remember that that's also normal. Change is a good thing and it's what we want to achieve so that your business can grow. The first major tip we cover in this episode is the importance of needle movers. A needle mover is something that takes little effort but pays off with lots of return on investment (ROI). We like to focus on small things that either save time or earn money in the long run. One of the most common things people view as a needle mover is social media, but, the truth is, this isn't always the case – especially lately. For a lot of people, ROI on social media isn't actually that strong. A better example is taking the time to fully understand your numbers. For example, most businesses operate on the 80/20 principle which means that 20% of their products account for 80% of their revenue. If you know which 20% of your products are your best sellers, you can better tailor your whole business operation to capitalize on those products. Many people hear the whispers of their heart, that inner wisdom, and higher self, and yet choose NOT to Listen. There are four reasons why: Fear, limiting self-beliefs, lack of trust and simply not knowing how to move forward with the information received. In this episode, we talk about how to let go of fear, how to reprogram those limiting self-beliefs, how to build trust in that inner voice of wisdom, and how to take action. We just touch on these concepts today as awareness is the first step to understanding and change. We'll come back to these concepts in future episodes and devote more time with each to take a deeper dive. My Three Guiding Principles to Inner Wisdom are LOOK, LISTEN and LEARN. In today's episode, I will introduce you to the second principle, Listen. Most people move through life chasing the things they think will bring them happiness to discover that once they have that thing, or achieved that goal, they are still not happy. In this very first episode, I share a personal story about finding the courage to do what you are called to do. I am called to teach people how to tap into inner wisdom so they can access their highest self and unleash their joy. Interestingly, it took putting my butt into a single-seat kayak and paddling over 300 miles up the West Coast of British Columbia before I finally said, “alright, alright, I'm listening, I'll do it.” That's the thing about that voice of inner wisdom, it often nudges you down a path that feels uncomfortable. If you want to have a life you absolutely love, that is full of meaning, purpose, and joy, then you need to learn how to lean into and trust that inner voice of wisdom. It will never steer you wrong. And that's what this podcast is all about. Learning how to access your highest self. Finding courage is a big theme and one we'll come back to again. To truly understand environmental justice, we need to better understand its relationship to social justice and racial justice. As we learned in episode two of our show, decisions are being made about people of color and indigenous communities, with very little understanding about their lived experiences. Challenges with racism, socio-economic struggles and geopolitical realities are at the crux of environmental justice. On “Bag Bans and Border Wall”, we're going to dissect the concept with two incredible women in very different parts of the world who are fighting the plastics industry head on. First we'll meet fierce river protector Tricia Cortez, Executive Director of the Rio Grande International Study Center. In addition to leading a decade-long fight against plastic bags in Laredo, Texas, Tricia fought and won a groundbreaking battle against the Trump administration on plans to build a 30-ft steel wall through her hometown. You'll also hear from the 2021 Goldman Prize Awardee, Gloria Majiga-Komoto. Speaking to us from her home in Malawi, Gloria shares her story of a 4-year battle against the plastic industry in support of a national ban on thin plastics. It's hard to keep up with best practices for technology and the latest apps, so in this episode we chat to expert Lynette Coulston to get her tips on essential digital life admin tools. About Lynette Coulston Lynette Coulston had a 30+ year career in software development and IT but in 2012 she left that all behind to create iTandCoffee, a business focussed on offering technology support and education to residents of her local area, through relaxed, social gatherings and individualised support - where technology topics could be discussed and explained in a friendly, understanding environment, over a cuppa! Over the years this has extended to include support and training for those in small business, for parents struggling to manage the family's technology, for those returning to the workforce or study, and for those who just want to better understand how their technology can help them manage their day-to-day life. This episode is full of practical tips and recommendations including: the importance of having a digital filing system and understanding where your files are saved - this is important to teach kids too! using inbuilt functionality on your computer (eg Time Machine for a Mac) to make sure you backup your files using apps like Reminders to remind you of important life admin tasks making the most of Voice Assistants to add reminders on the go (Siri or Google Assistant) selecting a calendar app that works best for you - Lynette uses Fantastical and WeekCal when you are helping others with their technology ask them to read to you what they see on the screen or use the share screen feature in programs like Zoom setting up parental controls like Screen Time before you give children a device setting up a home router that can restrict internet access for each device to supplement parental controls making sure you have good scanning apps on your phone to scan straighten, crop, clarify documents - Lynette recommends Scannable, Office Lens, Adobe Fill & Sign and Photomyne making sure you have strong and different passwords to reduce the risk of phishing, Lynette recommends using a password manager (Last Pass, One Password, Dashlane) or a secure note. What are your favorite resources when it comes to business growth and development? If you have listened to the last two episodes, we have been talking about mentors and the types of people you need in your business as you continue to grow and scale. Today I’m wrapping up by sharing what I have been doing as the CEO of The Ops Authority over the last year to continuously grow and develop. Areas of Growth & Development I began this business in 2015, and have entered the growth phase of the business about two years in. Right now we are in the beginning of the scaling phase, as our programs are becoming more predictable and our team is being built out. We have attempted to build the program out to fit my personality, style, and goals in order to create a true vision. Anytime you are building something like this out you will run into obstacles and things that don't feel like they are in your wheelhouse. Operations come super easy to me, but there were some gaps that I had because my corporate background was very narrow. “When you are an entrepreneur, you have the responsibilities of every side of business… whether you want them or not.” In that transition from corporate life to running my own business, it was much more robust of a scope than I’d ever dealt with. I needed to gain some knowledge in several areas. Financial Acumen I’m a spreadsheet person, but being aware of what financials are important is one thing… actually doing them in your own business is a whole other ballgame. I don’t believe that anyone is teaching entrepreneurs the true depth of financial acumen that you need to run a sustainable business that will allow you to scale. I continue to dive into this area which has also allowed me to understand more about retirement, annuities, and all of those important fundamental financial components. Vision As a Director Of Operations (DOO), and a previous chief of staff for a Fortune 150 company, I am amazing at execution, integrating, and leading people. The difficult part of having my own business was the vision. I needed to be able to dream and find a place where I could imagine what this business could do... my real “why” for devoting so much time, energy, expertise, investment into this business. I had to work very deeply on identifying what my vision is. But, the stronger our financial position gets, the easier it is for me to cast a bigger vision. My vision is so much stronger and bolder and to some degree; I just needed experience and success so I could continue to drive the vision forward and expand it. Human Resources I have 10 years of experience in corporate human resources, and I am always looking for more knowledge about HR practices. SHRM: I subscribe to SHRM (Society of Human Resource Managers) and it's important that I stay up with what is happening in the field. There is so much knowledge about all sizes of businesses. It's a great hub. Kolbe: The other piece I always want to know more about is the Kolbe, which is a certification and an index that will help you understand people’s natural tendencies to process work. It has played a big role in my business as I help people identify their talent. Resources It is so important to know what your gaps are and to stay on top of your industry. These are some of my favorites. “Know your gaps and stay on top of your industry.” Books Bigger Than You by Kelly Roach: Kelly is my business coach, and this was the book that I read (before I started coaching with her) that told me that this woman had what I needed. Some of the foundations that she lays out have allowed me to scale faster in the last 24 months. Atomic Habits by James Clear: A great book on productivity. Blue Ocean Strategy by Chan Kim: This book encouraged me to see what I was doing as a “blue ocean.” It helped me see what impact I could potentially have. 5 Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick Lencioni: Patrick is a maven in the leadership space, and has amazing advice about growing teams. Built to Sell by John Warrillow: When I started, my goal was to replace my corporate income ASAP, so I could continue to build my legacy. This book is an awesome read that helps you think differently about the business you are building. Giftology by John Ruhli: This book focuses on the client experience. It helped me to see how much a gift can deepen your relationship. Exactly What to Say by Phil Jones: This is a super short read that packs a big punch. Dare to Lead by Brene Brown: One of my favorite authors, and everything she does is research based. The Most Powerful Woman in the Room is You by Lydia Fenet: This is an empowerment book with an amazing story of a woman in a male dominated space. Alter Ego by Todd Herman: This book is both strategy and mindset. It is also a personal development book, and has helped me with my mindset as I walk into difficult situations. Podcasts Second in Command with Cameron Herald: Interviews with COOs, who often face the same challenges as DOOs. Marketing for Coaches, with Matthew Kimberly: (Formerly “Get a Grip”) I love the host's no nonsense attitude, and that he has content that is specific to how to market as a coach. What Works with Tara Mcmillan: I think she is one of the best interviewers of anyone in the podcasting space. I was on her podcast last year, and she finds real people to tell their stories and gleans big lessons from them. Not For Lazy Marketers Podcast with Emily Hirsh: This gives me my dose of marketing for my specific industry. The episodes are short and give lots of great info that you can implement, all in a short time. Life Coach School with Brooke Castillo: I enjoy the way this relates to business, health, wealth, and mindset. The Newsworthy with Erica Mandy: All the days news boiled down to 10 minutes. Programs Professionally investing in the Unstoppable Entrepreneur, with Kelly Roach has changed the trajectory of this business and allowed me to get closer to my vision. Having accountability has allowed me to have growth so much faster because I had a support system. For most people, NO is just the opposite. Frustrating. Depressing. A small two-letter word that has the power to literally stop people dead in their tracks. What if you could completely change the way you think about NO? Our guest believes that you can… Andrea Waltz is the founder of Courage Crafters AND co-author of the best-selling book "Go for No!". She teaches salespeople and business owners of every shape and size how to reprogram the way you think and feel about the word NO to achieve your goals and dreams Here are the highlights of this episode: 1:20 Andrea's ideal Client: My ideal client is anyone who has to go out and sell a product, service, or idea for a living. Now I know that sounds like everybody because everybody sells but that is really true. It's anybody who has to face rejection, anybody who has a fear of rejection and especially the people that manage those people. Sales Managers typically, VP of Sales where they're leading a salesforce and again, people have to face rejection. 2:05 Problem Andrea helps solve: Right, it's not avoiding the word 'NO'. The problem we solve is helping people turn the word NO and really change it from being an obstacle into an asset. And I'm not kidding when I say that, like literally figuring out a way to help people reprogram the way they think about rejection and also feel about rejection so that it no longer stops them. So, when you get rejected and you get a no, instead of being depressed and slowing down and not being productive. you'll actually feel motivated, inspired and you keep going. It's a huge problem and that's what we focus on solving. 3:03 Typical symptoms that clients do before reaching out to Andrea: It's a great question because there are some really clear signs that rejection affects people and their business and in their life. The big one is procrastination; they know they have to call and reach out to prospects for their product or service, but they don't. They get rejected, they get a few No's, they slowdown, they want to give up. They have anxiety, they have nervousness, fear of looking pushy or aggressive as a salesperson. They fear of coming across as 'salesy salesperson'. All of those kinds of fears, anxiety, physically and all of those thoughts are big signs that rejection is affecting you. 4:06 What are some of the common mistakes that folks make before finding Andrea and her solution: Well typically people think the way to solve a fear of rejection is to do everything within their power to avoid getting rejected. So, they stop putting themselves in positions where they're going to be rejected. They do everything they can to avoid hearing the word 'no' and the irony is that it's the worst thing that you can do. So now they're hustling 24/7 not only to continue generating traffic but also to support the sales that they're making. And it's all about figuring out what's one product I can really just knock out of the park, how can I deliver that in a scalable way. Once I got that, I'm not going to fiddle with the backend anymore, I'm going to focus on getting more leads and sales. 4:41Luisa's Valuable Free Action (VFA): One thing that I would recommend doing is finding 3 people who are your potential clients online. In grade 4 and 5 topics of puberty, attraction, self-identity, body image, gender and social marketing can be taught/discussed. Today Marcel Schwantes gets to talk to one of the legends of the Gallup Organization, Jim Harter to discuss Gallup’s new book: It’s the Manager. This was the largest global study in the future of work. Jim shares that the whole world is interested in and talking about where work is going, and what the new workforce is asking about. With this book, they aimed to really identify what it is that people are looking for. The Role of the ManagerManagers’ jobs are extremely complex, and they have much higher stress than the people they manage. They also tend to have less clear expectations than the people they manage. One of the main reasons people join (or leave!) companies is the availability (or lack thereof) of career development. Managers are in the best position to develop people, but that’s not often a clear instruction. Jim shares what managers can do - and how the priority is going to shift from delegation and review to a coaching model that takes into account the specific needs, talents, and interests of team members. The Building Blocks of CultureJim talks about how critical the executive team is, in terms of creating an organizational culture. It starts with the company's goals and becomes a process of determining what you’re aiming for, and how that compares to what you’re doing. It's what creates a reputation over time. Marcel mentions that people are less interested in climbing the corporate ladder - and Jim explains what that means. The opportunity for development and growth also has a huge impact on people’s perception of their pay. Setting clear expectations, and making growth personal to a specific employee makes a huge difference in employee satisfaction. Remote WorkforcesWhether you’re a remote or on-site worker, you have the same basic needs as an employee. Jim discusses how management can ensure remote team members connect to their colleagues on a personal level. The New Critical SkillsJim talks about the data they’ve gathered, which has resulted in 7 expectations or competencies that all employees need to have, all very important in a changing technological environment. People will come to a role with varying levels of ability in each of these - but can all be improved. Jim talks about what they are, and how people should prioritize improving them. Managers can take regular actions and have specific kinds of conversations to make sure their team members are getting the support and the feedback that they need. Building trust is number one. Patterns for EngagementCompanies with great engagement have 4 things in common. Jim tells us what they are, and how organizations make each of them their own. No matter how employee engagement happens, it needs to come from the top, and be consistently deployed throughout the company. Making sure managers are engaged is important as well! Managers need coaching, the way we expect them to coach. A lot of this requires a real focus on coaching managers and helping them to become coaches. Jim explains what that means, and how it can be executed, as well as the potential obstacles that might be in the way. People Leading PeopleJim talks about how important it is to avoid leading through fear. People will perform better and be happier when a more human-focused approach is taken. Being in a developmental state rather than one of fear - every metric improves. Getting people in the habit to think about helping, supporting and collaborating with their colleagues, rather than obeying orders and completing tasks. Show Highlights: Dan started out with Air Force electronics training followed by his role as Motorola’s microsystems Group Test Repair Technician, and now Dan is the Senior Principal Engineer with NXP. You’ve presented twice at AltiumLive events as a keynote speaker, called “It’s all about the space” What does it mean, it’s all about the space? The real key to successful engineering is the realisation that it is energy moving through space. It’s critical to design the spaces. The concept that the energy moves through wires, is what led us to where we are today. In the past where switching was very slow, it didn’t matter, however, as technology changed and switching sped up, we saw higher failure rates in EMC. We reduced the size of the antenna required by an order of magnitude, practicing circuit theory without realising that energy moves through the laminate (the space). Energy also moves through the board space from one dielectric layer, up to a higher one. Why do you think engineers and designers alike lose this perspective along the way? It’s somewhat confusing, because geometry cannot be imported. Many still believe that the energy transfer is instantaneous. If that were the case there would never be signal integrity problems because energy transfer is much slower. This is also happening because the physics side of electronics engineering is made out to be something that’s quite difficult. There is a lack of cohesion between the science of energy and its reality and what we’re teaching people. The fundamental concept is we design products that generate, manage and consume electromagnetic field energy, not electrons. This field has to be in a space. Physics trumps theory! Five minutes into that class I knew that everything I had ever designed, had worked by accident! Rick (Hartley) became a friend and a wonderful mentor. Ralph Morrison taught me the importance of physics and that the energy was in the spaces and not the traces. He said: ‘People travel through the halls and not the walls, signals and energy travel in the spaces not the traces,’ which inspired my song. The geometry of the spaces has proven to be extremely successful with the help of my mentors. Finding great mentors is crucial. If you’re still in school, pay attention, take the extra time to talk to your professors and connect the dots of the behaviors of the electromagnetic field. Electronics is a world of three’s: You can store energy, you can move it or you can convert it into kinetic energy - that’s it, the entire electronics world! This is not an extremely complicated world for managing electromagnetic fields. You have three components: a conductor, a dielectric, and a switch. This isn’t rocket science, this is plumbing! You have to have to start using ground as a pointer object within your board stack. The common conductor from the source of the energy to the place where that energy is consumed, next to a common dielectric, so that the ground and the dielectric next to it, is unbroken from the source of the energy to the destination. Key Points It can feel like the wrong decision to get underneath the surface and address real areas of the heart Lenses - “It’s not what happens to you, but the meaning you attach to it that makes all the difference.” We don’t see things are they are, we see things as we are Whether we realize it or not, in all of life, we attach meaning to our experiences An essential principle for navigating the way of the heart is to pause and ask ourselves, “Is this true?” (What I’m feeling, thinking, believing?) We need each other to offer interpretation and perspective We can’t navigate life alone Triggers - A trigger is a current experience that causes something from the past (memory, emotion, belief) to shoot forward into the present. A daily examen prayer can be very helpful to remaining recollected and noticing our triggers and reactions We have to fight against diminishing the experiences we have that might need to be talked out with someone Discussion Questions: What struck you from this episode? Think about a time when you attached negative meaning to an experience and it changed you. Summarize the basic belief/interpretation into a simple statement (Brett’s was, “I’m second place.”) Why does this bother you? How would the interactions after the interpretation gone better if you had seen the negative interpretation and had some perspective from a trusted friend? When where some times you felt this before? Where might this belief originate? Who are some people you could go to for perspective? When was a time in the past week that you got triggered? How did it affect you? What are some basics in the way of the heart that you’ve forgotten? What’s one way you could continue to stay aware of your heart throughout your day/week? Two years ago, popular teacher and author Lysa TerKeurst announced that her husband had had an affair. Her latest book chronicles her agonizing journey of disappointment, and the wrestling with God that we are all invited to, in times of deep pain and overwhelming confusion. If their marriage wasn't trauma enough, Lysa was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly afterwards, and had to journey through much of it without the support she had been used to her entire life. Today, he’s going to have a chat with us not only to share how he managed to clinch these spots, he’s also here to tell us the obstacles that he had to overcome to get his speaking business off the ground, the mistakes he made along the way, the people who helped him get back on the right track, and the lessons that he learned. No Cinderella Story Chris Widener minces no words when describing his childhood, saying “I had a really rotten upbringing.” He grew up in a single parent household, switched schools 11 times in a span of 28 months, started using drugs during sixth grade, and earned money from selling marijuana and gambling at the horse races. It wasn’t until he felt that his life was going nowhere that he decided that he needed to make changes. The Transition Compared to many public speakers who started their public speaking careers late in their lives, Chris Widener had a relatively early start, and he owes a part of it to his earlier struggles in life. He started doing the rounds at summer camps, speaking in front of junior high school, high school, and college students before eventually transitioning to speaking in front of adult audiences. However, like many transitions, things didn’t always go smoothly. Facepalm Moments Chris shares one unfortunate but funny incident back when he used to publish an e-zine to help him promote his public speaking business. He built a fax journal and used it to send his newsletters to his subscribers. When he moved to Seattle, he learned about the possible benefits of email and decided to make the switch -- but there was a problem. “Everybody in Seattle had an email address, but nobody anywhere else had an email address, and I lost like 90% of my subscribers overnight by switching to email,” he recalls while laughing out loud. Ghostwriting Career Many people now know Chris Widener as a bestselling author, but probably few know that he used to ghostwrite for other people, including the popular John Maxwell, himself. In fact, it’s through this gig that he met one of the people who has been instrumental in the growth of his public speaking business -- John Rohn. “People say, ‘how do I build a speaking career,’ and I said, ‘Well, first of all, work with Jim Rohn then work with Zig Ziglar,” he jokes. Serious Lessons Learned Jokes aside, Chris Widener credits Jim Rohn and Zig Ziglar as very influential figures in his public speaking career not only because they used to refer clients that they can no longer accommodate to him when he was just starting out, but also because the way they worked and interacted with people taught him to stop measuring himself against others and focus on the things that he can do as an individual and how he can impact other people instead. Positioning Yourself Most courses about public speaking focus on a specialization or two -- usually marketing -- but for Chris, one of the first things that you should learn if you intend to enter the business is positioning yourself. He tells people not to be intimidated by the big names. Instead find a gap that you can fill, and become an expert at it. As an example, he shared how he started as a motivational speaker then moved on to becoming a leadership speaker, then a speaker on influence, before finally focusing on character-based influence. Because of this, he developed a much shorter one-year program that can help aspiring public speakers learn the A-Z of public speaking from positioning, branding, and building a social media following, to website building and podcasting. What do you do when you are using the only hand you have? I guess you can only be doing what you are doing. For me this is a life long consideration and contemplation. It is actually a quality of my one-handed life. This means when I am brushing my teeth there is a very good chance I will not be doing something with my other hand. It may sound a bit odd to hear it that way. But have you ever did something else with your other hand while you were brushing your teeth? Were you getting a glass of water? Maybe you were typing on your computer? Have you at times got some clothes laid out for the day? My point is that as two-handed people you have the ability to do something else while one hand is doing something. That is not the life I live. When I am using my only hand, that is what I am doing. Hey hey! Thanks for joining me for our very last episode in 2015. Today I'm talking about why I stopped making New Year’s resolutions and what I do instead. It’s been an amazing year here at DIY MFA. I’ve interviewed some awesome people this year and have gotten to share some major milestones with you, not the least of which is the DIY MFA book! OMG, word nerds, I wrote the book this year! How crazy-pants is that? But now down to business. Let’s talk about goal setting and why I don’t make New Year’s resolutions anymore. Get all the deets by listening to this episode. OK, before I dive in, let me give you some backstory. Once upon a time I loved brainstorming. I would get a huge high from dreaming up new ideas. I had tons of projects I’d started and never finished. But over the years I’ve started to shift away from being a dreamer to being a doer. To get a full picture of then vs. now, check out this chart. I wish I could say there was a pivotal moment where I realized everything was different. But this shift was gradual. I don’t think I’m finished yet, either. This is just the beginning of a much longer journey. What I've discovered, though, is that New Year’s resolutions don’t work for me. Here's what does work... Caveat: There are lots of gurus and experts on the internet spouting "best practices" and magic-bullet solutions. But you're a word nerd, so I'm guessing you see through all that B.S. At DIY MFA we believe that the only "best practice" is the one that actually works for you. So I'll share some strategies that have worked for me, but it’s up to you to test them for yourself and decide if they work for you. And don't be shy about tweaking and adapting techniques to your own unique style. That's the DIY MFA way. Cool? Cool. My New Approach to Resolutions and Goal-Setting In my new approach, the huge leap no longer matters. There’s no more “I’m going to write a book next year,” or “I’m going to lose x pounds.” Instead of making sweeping goals that seem enormous and unreachable, I now set goals to take small incremental steps and repeating that action over and over and over. Where before the giant goal was the focus, now the repeated action takes center stage. I’ve noticed after working with hundreds of writers, when you stop focusing on the end goal and start emphasizing the repeated action, that’s when you make a breakthrough. Letting go of that end goal gives you the space and focus to do the work and actually reach that goal. As a writer, I find that irony kind of delicious. These days, I've stopped looking at writing as a short-term push and instead see it as a war of attrition. The truth is that the writers who want overnight success are not the ones who will stick with the process long enough to see it through. The writers who have the tenacity to stick with it the writing gets tough, those are the ones who succeed. You just have to survive long enough so you're the only one left standing on the battlefield. Writing and creativity might be a battle, but remember that we aren't fighting each other; we’re all on the same side. In the end, the only person we're fighting against is ourselves. Our obstacles are internal and the battle is about trying to get out of our own way. So how do I do it? 7 Simple Steps: After working at this for a few years now, I have come up with a process for getting through my ideas and my goals as efficiently as possible. Again, this is just my own crazy process. Take in the ideas, test them out, then use what works for you and discard the rest. Figure out your big picture.Lots of people get stuck focusing all their energy on this step alone. While I concede it’s important to know where you’re headed, I only spend, like, 10 seconds here, then I move on to step 2. Take stock of recent progress.If you want to feel successful, you can’t compare yourself to the big vision, to where you want to be. You have to compare yourself to where you’ve been. That way you always come out ahead. Not only does it help motivate you to move forward, it helps you build mastery. In order to succeed, you need to feel that mastery of your craft. Use concrete data here, too. Don’t BS yourself over your accomplishments. How many words did you write last year? How many guest posts/blog posts/freelance articles? That’s the number to beat. Iterate, iterate, iterate.I talked about iteration last year at this time, so I won’t spend a lot of time here. Just remember that iteration is vital and basically boils down to these five things:V = variables. What will you measure to see your progress?I = information. Collect your data. Track how much you’ve done each session.T = tripwire. This is the signal for you to stop and take stock.A = analysis. Look at the data you’ve collected and find the overall pattern.L = learning. Take that information, figure out what it means, and then try something new. If something is not working for you, don’t keep repeating it because someone told you it was a “best practice.” Instead, make a small shift and try something a little different to see what works best for you. The key here is to (a) understand your baseline, how you operate in your natural state, and (b) shape your process within those constraints. Set your sights on a short-term target.What can you do in a 4 to 8 week period? Your "big vision" inspires this target goal, but it must be shorter term and more contained. Seriously, if you can't hit that target within 3 months (tops!) it's too big. Reverse engineer your action steps.The inspiration for this step came from Wishcraft: How to Get What You Really Want by Barbara Sher. Her process revolutionized the way I look at setting my goals. You need a plan to get from point A to point B, so take some time and work backwards from that goal.Don't start at the start, but with the goal, then figure out what you need to do just before you just before that. Keep working your way backwards until you've figured out your immediate next step. Remember to break your steps down to the smallest increments. Set your ground rules for success.This is another place you’ll find “best practices” galore, but you need to figure out what works for you.F ind ways to make the most out of your writing time. Remember, your time is precious! Here are some things that work for me: I focus on one thing at a time. I set a time limit so I know when I can stop and move on to something new. I make everything else off limits until I reach my goal. I bribe myself with a reward for success. Keep future projects on the radar without letting them get in your way.You want to know what’s coming next, but sometimes holding brain space to remember it can sap your mental energy. So make a space to write down your ideas and next projects and keep them for later. This will free up the brain space you need for what you’re working on right now. And sometimes getting ideas out on paper will help you to recognize what is worth pursuing and what will ultimately be unproductive. Remember, where you want to be down the road is not nearly as important as the path you take to get there. These steps focus on the day to day process. Getting your head around what you need to do today is vital to helping you move toward your goal without being weighed down by it. As you look forward to 2016, I want to challenge you to stop dreaming and start doing. Don't worry so much about the big vision, but focus on one incremental action that you can repeat again and again until you reach your goal. No more dreaming.
