Marcia Peck is an award-winning writer and accomplished musician, celebrating over 50 years as a cellist with the Minnesota Orchestra.  Inspired by the rhythms and sounds of music echoed in language, her debut novel, Water Music: A Cape Cod Story, combines all of her passions –music, writing, and Cape Cod. The book has received critical acclaim and has received many book awards, including Literary Titan Gold, National Indie Excellence Award, New England Book Festival Regional Lit Winner, and Feathered Quill Reviewers Choice Award Winner. Additionally, she was a finalist for American Writing Awards, Eric Hoffer Award Grand Prize, Firebird Book Awards, and Wishing Shelf Book Awards. Pacifica book Awards designated it as a “Notable Book” and her book was long-listed by both Historical Fiction Company Book-of-the-Year Award and Somerset Book Awards.  Peck's writing has received awards from New Millenium Writings (First prize for "Memento Mori"), Tamarack Awards (honorable mention for "An Unexpected Cadence"), Lake Superior Writers' Conference (First Prize for "Pride and Humility"), Glimmer Train(finalist for Very Short Fiction Award for "The Flavor of Borscht"),Flash quake (nomination for Pushcart Prize for "Long Distance"), and MnArtists Mini Stories (Winner for "Little Vladimir's Father").  She is the grateful recipient of Artist Fellowships from the Minnesota State Arts Board, Loft-McKnight, and the Jerome Foundation as well as residencies at Hambidge Center in Georgia and Ragdale in Illinois. A cellist with the Minnesota Orchestra for her entire musical career, she is inspired by the rhythms and sounds of music echoed in language. Peck graduated from the legendary Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. She studied with famed Italian cellist Antonio Janigro in Germany for two years. Her articles have appeared in Musical America, Strad Magazine, Strings Magazine, Senza Sordino, the magazine of the Minnesota Orchestra and the op-ed pages of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Her fiction has appeared in Chautauqua Journal, New Millenium Writings, Gemini Magazine, Glimmer Train, 26 Minnesota Writers (Nodine Press), Tribute to Orpheus 2(Kearney Books), and three volumes of Open to Interpretation: Fading Light(Taylor and O'Neill). Her work has been supported by the Minnesota State Arts Board, The Loft Literary Center, and the Jerome Foundation, Ragdale Foundation and Hambidge Center. Peck grew up in New Jersey and summered in Cape Cod. Her love for Cape Cod has been a strong and deep current throughout her life. She and her sisters still return to the house their father built in Orleans. Em Orleans, o Desfile Cívico acontece no domingo, dia 7 de setembro, a partir das 9h, na Praça Celso Ramos. A secretária de Educação, Elisabete Menegasso Bagio, participou do programa para contar os detalhes da organização e do que está sendo preparado para o evento.

Orleans está recebendo, nesta semana, a ação educativa Cinema Rodoviário Itinerante (Cinetram), que leva palestras e atividades sobre segurança no trânsito para estudantes do 6º ao 9º ano do ensino fundamental e do ensino médio. O projeto segue até esta quinta-feira (4) e é realizado em parceria com a Polícia Rodoviária Federal (PRF), Departamento Estadual de Trânsito de SC (Detran-SC), Polícia Militar e a Secretaria Municipal de Educação. A iniciativa tem como objetivo promover a Educação para o Trânsito nas escolas, utilizando filmes, palestras e atividades interativas para estimular a reflexão entre os jovens. Entre os temas abordados estão o respeito às leis de trânsito, o uso do cinto de segurança e a prevenção de acidentes. Todos os estudantes das redes pública e privada do município participam da ação, que conta com palestras ministradas por agentes da PRF, Detran-SC e Polícia Militar. Além de repassar informações, os instrutores buscam o engajamento dos alunos na conscientização sobre os riscos no trânsito e na construção de uma mobilidade mais segura. Em entrevista ao Cruz de Malta Notícias, o assessor de comunicação do Getran-SC, Alexandre Galindo, destacou os objetivos da ação e reforçou a importância de envolver os jovens como multiplicadores de boas práticas no trânsito.

A Epagri promove nesta quarta-feira (3), às 13h30, na comunidade de Barracão, em Orleans, o Encontro Municipal de Manejo e Fertilidade do Solo. O objetivo é orientar os produtores rurais sobre práticas que ajudem a preservar a qualidade do solo, evitando o esgotamento provocado pelos cultivos subsequentes. Durante o evento, serão apresentadas técnicas e estratégias de manejo adequado, fundamentais para garantir a produtividade e a sustentabilidade das lavouras. Embora o encontro tenha a parceria da BAT Brasil, empresa do setor fumageiro, a programação é voltada a todos os produtores, independentemente da cultura trabalhada — seja fumo, milho, feijão ou qualquer outra. A Engenheira Agrônoma e Extensionista Rural da Epagri em Orleans, Joana Bett, participou de entrevista no programa Cruz de Malta Notícias, trazendo mais detalhes sobre a programação e reforçando o convite para que os agricultores da região participem. Na segunda-feira (1º), um grupo formado por 23 fiéis iniciou uma caminhada de fé e superação, partindo de Orleans em direção ao Santuário de Santa Paulina, em Nova Trento. A peregrinação reúne participantes de diferentes cidades da região Sul, incluindo dois gaúchos, e vai percorrer mais de 210 quilômetros a pé. O trajeto é dividido em etapas diárias de 20 a 26 quilômetros, passando por municípios como Braço do Norte, Rio Fortuna, Angelina e Major Gercino. O deslocamento é feito por vias alternativas por estradas de chão e conta com o apoio logístico do músico e radialista Lismael Ferrareis, responsável pelo fornecimento de água e alimentação ao grupo. A chegada ao destino está prevista para o próximo domingo (7), quando os peregrinos devem participar de uma missa no Santuário de Santa Paulina. Durante entrevista ao Cruz de Malta Notícias – 2ª edição, Lismael Ferrareis e o empresário Miri Librelato relataram detalhes da jornada e destacaram a importância espiritual e comunitária da experiência.

O município de Orleans celebrou no último fim de semana seus 112 anos de emancipação político-administrativa. Fundada em 1913, a cidade que hoje reúne cerca de 24 mil habitantes é carinhosamente conhecida como a “Cidade das Colinas”, título que faz referência à sua geografia e também ao acolhimento de sua gente. Durante as comemorações, a população prestigiou uma programação marcada pela valorização da cultura e da história local, fortemente influenciada pelos imigrantes italianos, alemães e portugueses. Orleans mantém vivas essas tradições por meio de festas típicas, gastronomia, preservação do patrimônio histórico e ações que reforçam sua identidade cultural. O repórter Robson Lunardi acompanhou o evento e conversou com o prefeito Fernando Cruzetta, o deputado estadual Volnei Weber e representantes de entidades locais, como a Rede Feminina de Combate ao Câncer, que reforçaram a importância da união em prol do desenvolvimento da cidade.

A cidade de Orleans comemora seus 112 anos de emancipação político-administrativa com uma ampla programação cultural, esportiva e gastronômica preparada para toda a família. As atividades iniciam nesta sexta-feira (29) e seguem até domingo (31), no Parque Princesa Isabel, sempre com entrada gratuita. A abertura da festa acontece nesta sexta-feira com o Baile da Terceira Idade e show da dupla Pai e Filho, às 14h. A programação segue com apresentações da Banda Lady Die e DJ Mad Ox, encerrando a noite em grande estilo com o show nacional da banda catarinense Dazaranha, marcado para as 22h. No sábado (30), o destaque será a abertura oficial das comemorações, às 15h, com missa celebrada pelo padre Ezequiel, seguida pelo tradicional corte do bolo de aniversário da cidade. O público também poderá prestigiar apresentações culturais, como o Coral Stella Alpina e grupos de dança. Outra atração do dia será o aniversário de 45 anos do Museu ao Ar Livre, que terá entrada gratuita das 9h às 17h30. À noite, a festa continua com shows de Mateus Estevão, Banda Jeito Louco, Teto Fernandes & Banda e DJ Mad Ox. Já no domingo (31), a programação inclui o 1º Desafio do Dote da Princesa, além de encontros de dança e teatro. No palco, se apresentam Fernando Mason e os Cachais, Grupo Godois e Banana & Banda. O encerramento será com o show nacional da dupla Netto & Henrique, às 20h. Para facilitar o acesso da comunidade ao evento, a Prefeitura de Orleans disponibilizará transporte coletivo gratuito nos três dias de festa, com rotas saindo dos bairros São Gerônimo, Lomba, Centro, Canudo e Núcleo Orleans até o Parque Princesa Isabel. Dentro da programação de aniversário de 112 anos de Orleans, a cidade será palco, pela primeira vez, da Copa da Coroa de Kart, evento que promete dois dias de muita velocidade, música e lazer para toda a família. A competição acontece nos dias 23 e 24 de agosto e é organizada pelo Kart Clube Criciúma, em parceria com o Departamento de Esportes de Orleans, CDL Orleans e conta com apoio da Prefeitura Municipal. A expectativa é reunir mais de 100 pilotos em provas que serão realizadas ao redor da Igreja Matriz Santa Otília, na Praça Celso Ramos, região central da cidade. Ao todo, serão disputadas 12 categorias. Além do aspecto esportivo, a iniciativa tem caráter histórico, já que Orleans sediou corridas de kart apenas nos anos de 1998 e 2012. O piloto e um dos organizadores do evento, Rogério Malacarne, participou do programa Cruz de Malta Notícias nesta sexta-feira (22) e comentou sobre os preparativos para a competição. O livro “150 anos da Grande Imigração Italiana em Santa Catarina” terá sua cerimônia de lançamento para a região Sul na próxima segunda-feira (25), às 19h, no salão da capela do Museu ao Ar Livre Princesa Isabel, em Orleans. A obra reúne textos de nove autores e traz um panorama histórico e cultural sobre a contribuição italiana para a formação social de Santa Catarina. Com 215 páginas, o livro aborda desde a chegada dos primeiros imigrantes até os reflexos contemporâneos dessa presença na identidade catarinense. Um dos autores é o professor e museólogo Idemar Ghizzo, do Centro Universitário Barriga Verde (Unibave). Ele assina o capítulo “Colônia de imigração italiana no sul catarinense”, que detalha o início do povoamento por italianos na região, a partir de 1877. Em entrevista ao programa Cruz de Malta Notícias, nesta sexta-feira (22), Ghizzo contou detalhes da obra e reforçou o convite para a cerimônia de lançamento. Ouça a entrevista completa:

O ex-prefeito de Orleans e pré-candidato a deputado estadual pelo MDB, Jorge Koch, foi o entrevistado do programa Cruz de Malta Notícias nesta quarta-feira (20). Durante a conversa, ele detalhou como vem conduzindo sua pré-campanha e destacou a importância da representatividade política do Sul de Santa Catarina na Assembleia Legislativa. Segundo Koch, sua agenda tem sido intensa, com visitas diárias a diferentes municípios da região Sul e também a outras áreas do estado. O pré-candidato reforçou a necessidade de manter o gabinete 112 na Alesc, atualmente ocupado pelo deputado Volnei Weber (MDB), como um espaço de defesa dos interesses do Sul catarinense. Na entrevista, Jorge Koch revelou ainda que o MDB já definiu os nomes que irão representar o partido na disputa estadual pela região. Ele será o candidato pela Amrec e Amurel, enquanto Tiago Zilli representará a Amesc. Sobre a disputa para deputado federal, o pré-candidato informou que a sigla ainda não fechou a lista de nomes. They meet back up to go to a Voodoo lady thing and eventually Tamra drops some big news about Katie to Gretchen. August signals the end of summer break, and students across Louisiana are heading back into the classroom. Today, episode 4 of season SIX of What Class are You?, a periodic series I make for Vermont Public about living in the American class system. In today's episode, we revisit Kytreana Patrick, who was a guest from the first class series back in 2022. Back then, Kytreana was working as a cashier at Olney's general store in Orleans, Vermont. Since then, Kytreana's gotten a job at a factory that manufactures combat helmets. She's got a small apartment in Newport, and this past January she gave birth to her first child, a daughter, Emberlyn. Thank you Vermont Public!

Using over 17,500 letters of handmade murrine tiles, Mathieu Grodet composed La Déclaration des Droits de l'Homme et du Citoyen, which translated means the Declaration of Human Rights, which was written in 1789. Recreated in mosaic style, dark red was used to represent blood, with the ivory-colored background symbolizing the ivory tower that freedom must be taken from. Intense attention to detail combined with a contemporary message defines Grodet's multi-disciplinary works in glass.  A French-born artist living and working in Canada, Grodet also creates thin and elegant glass objects in classic Venetian style, engraved using a Dremel tool with imagery that addresses modern-day ideas and issues. Says Grodet, “Several themes are recurrent: the memory, the inventories, but also the lie (propaganda) or the secret.” His work reflects a deep interrogation of the world and its violence.  Later, Grodet learned to paint on various glass shapes using enamel, and through these techniques was able to make his illustrations more fanciful and full of color. Though it provided an alternative way to express on glass, the enameling process can be time-consuming and technically difficult. Firing can be stressful, and mistakes are unfixable. In one instance, Grodet invested three months of work on one piece, which he had to abandon after issues with the firing. He hasn't worked with enamel since, but toys with the idea of revisiting these processes that afford so much artistic space.  In parallel with glassblowing, Grodet learned flameworking and quickly discovered it was far easier to put together a small flameworking studio than a hot shop. At a Loren Stump workshop presented at the Corning Museum of Glass, Grodet learned the ancient technique of murrine. When the pandemic hit, he finally had some time off from teaching to focus on flameworked murrine and now spends most of his studio time on the techniques. Says Grodet: “Glassblowing will always have a special place in my heart. Your entire body is needed to work the hot shop, and I love the physicality of engaging with fire and water – it is playing with terrestrial forces – something bigger than us. However, now I am enjoying the art of murrine and its technical and strategic aspects. It is like building a house; you need to carefully plan every step over weeks. It also involves other diverse techniques, such as cold working, marquetry and mosaic. I am in uncharted territory on the murrine planet.”  Grodet was born in Orleans, France, where he first studied art and drawing at the Visual Art Institute of Orleans. In 1999, he discovered the medium of glass and began his career in this ancient art by training at several studios across France and Europe. He began learning flameworking at CERFAV (the European Centre for Research and Training in Glass Art). After many travels, he dropped his suitcases in Canada, where he now applies the various different techniques acquired over the years to his artistic practice. With all his work, Grodet explores themes of contradiction, power, duality and the absurdity of life.  Represented by Sandra Ainsley Gallery, Toronto, Ontario, and Galerie Elena Lee in Montreal, Quebec, Grodet's art has been shown at SOFA Chicago, Galerie Espace Verre, and is held in several museum collections, including The Corning Museum of Glass and the Art Institute of Chicago. He has taught and demonstrated around the world. From September 25 to November 9, 2025, Grodet's work will be on view at Musée du Verre, site du Bois du Cazier, Charleroi, Belgium. The artist recently taught a murrine class at Salem Community College, June 16 through 20 followed by a medieval glassblowing class at the Coring Museum of Glass, June 23 through July 4. He will teach at the Glass Furnace in Istanbul, August 4 through 14, and his final teaching gig of 2025, a murrine class, takes place in Kansas City from November 8 through 12 at the studio of Sara Sally LaGrand.
