Families in rural areas of New York say it is increasingly difficult to find child care. According to a report from the Children's Agenda, seven rural counties in Western New York shows can be characterized as child care deserts, where there are more than three children under the age of five per licensed child care slot for children in that age group. Structural and funding issues are contributing to the challenges, and providers point to low child care educator pay as a critical factor in the availability of reliable care. So what can be done? Our guests discuss it: Pete Nabozny, director of policy for The Children's Agenda Rachel Bonsignore, executive director of Liftoff Western New York Kathleen Valley, executive board member for Praising Kids Child Care Center in Medina Taryn Moyle, child care resource center program manager for Community Action of Orleans and Genesee, Inc. Frankreich im frühen 15. Jahrhundert.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for February 1, 2026 is: gargantuan gahr-GAN-chuh-wun adjective Gargantuan describes something that is very large in size or amount; something gargantuan is, in other words, gigantic. // Bigfoot is said to be a creature of gargantuan proportions. See the entry > Examples: “By the late 1870s, he was asked to take part in the gargantuan task of evaluating and cataloguing the results of the five-year Challenger expedition—an ambitious British global research voyage, the first ever dedicated purely to science. [Ernst] Haeckel's contribution to the final 50-volume Report of the Voyage of H.M.S. Challenger took a decade to complete and spanned three volumes, 2,750 pages, and 130 plates.” — Michael Benson, Nanocosmos: Journeys in Electron Space, 2025 Did you know? Gargantua is the name of a giant king in François Rabelais's 16th-century satiric novel Gargantua, the second part of a five-volume series about the giant and his son Pantagruel. All of the details of Gargantua's life befit a giant. He rides a colossal mare whose tail switches so violently that it fells the entire forest of Orleans. He has an enormous appetite, such that in one incident he inadvertently swallows five pilgrims while eating a salad. The scale of everything connected with Gargantua led to the adjective gargantuan, which since William Shakespeare's time has been used for anything of tremendous size or volume.

A round of applause is due for Overdrive's 2025 Trucker of the Year, selected from a field of 10 semi-finalist Trucker of the Month honorees, then three finalists. Off the top, one of the freight partners of the winning independent lauded the owner-operator for core strengths of the owner in her day-to-day work he does for a dedicated customer of the brokerage and small fleet Rankin & Sons. "I can't think of anyone who deserves it as much as he does," said Jeanna Bean of the winner, Overdrive 2025 Trucker of the Year John Penn. We also spoke with a close associate of Penn, Schneider-leased owner-operator Kevin O'Sullivan of Arizona, who recognized the real strength of the competitive field of all of our 2025 Truckers of the Month, especially the two fellow finalists. "There was a lot of good competition," said O'Sullivan. "He came out on top, and I'm glad he did. That man is a wealth of knowledge and, everything he's learned the good and bad, he's definitely not afraid to put it out there and help other people." If you followed the 2025 competition, you'll remember owner-operator John Penn's story, competition judges in the final round praising Penn for qualities shared by his fellow finalists – drive, clear focus on long-term business stability, mechanical aptitude, and so much more: https://www.overdriveonline.com/15770500 What may well set him apart, though, is all he's done to take advantage of what contemporary engines and drivetrains can help deliver -- maximum fuel economy, with Penn hovering near and occasionally above 11 miles per gallon routinely in his 2019 Freightliner Cascadia. It shows in his one-truck business's very-low operating ratio. Penn hauls LTL furniture with own authority as JP Transport, those outbound dedicated runs for the Rankin & Sons broker's customer, whom he treats like his own. He's hard at work taking advantage of return-load opportunities coming back toward home in Orleans, which you'll hear more about in a follow-up Overdrive Radio edition. In this episode, John Penn gives credit where credit's due, telling the stories of the men who mentored him early in trucking, the woman who's been with him every step of the way, and others who inspire him today -- including competitors Ron Kelsey and Jason Shelly. "I was shocked, first of all, honored," Penn said of learning of the win, particularly alongside Kelsey and Shelly. Both owners are, simply put, "the top of the heap." Read about both Ron Kelsey and Jason Shelly here: https://www.overdriveonline.com/15774237 And know that Penn's a pretty modest guy -- his business is pretty special in its own right likewise his willingness to share what he's learning with others in an ongoing dialog about just what can be done -- long as it makes sense from a biz perspective. As O'Sullivan put it at a certain point in our conversation, referencing Penn's fuel-mileage excellence in particular, "he's certainly set the bar high for the rest of us." O'Sullivan offered three words to describe his friend, mentor and potential future busines partner: Informative, genuine, down-to-earth, qualities that underpin Penn's two-decade odyssey to stability and profit with authority. With the win come a new Bostrom seat from the program sponsor, likewise a scale-model version of his aerodynamic 2019 Freightliner Cascadia by Eston Hoffman of Hoffman Mechanical Design. Plenty bragging rights, too, for the time to come. In the podcast, Penn tells his story with appreciation for the people who've been there setting him straight on the course to success, giving credit where credit's due. Like, end-to-end simulating user journey across entire applications. So end-to-end, end-to-end flow, end-to-end tests. But this type of test they they have some downsides."— Anton Moldovan Along the way, we talked the different types of testing involved in getting your application for production, the many different ways that NBomber (or other load testing suites) can help you prepare for that, and Anton helps us understand a little more about functional programming. Curiosities and Lesser-Known FactsValentine's Day encompasses a range of unusual and historically significant stories that extend beyond conventional symbols such as flowers and chocolates. These lesser-known facts underscore the holiday's complex and multifaceted nature. For instance, the oldest extant Valentine's love note is a poem composed in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, addressed to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following the Battle of Agincourt. This correspondence, now preserved in the British Library, illustrates the enduring human desire for connection on this day. In the Victorian era, the tradition of the Vinegar Valentine emerged, representing a satirical, often harsh variant of the holiday. These inexpensive cards, featuring crude illustrations and caustic humor, were sent anonymously to criticize individuals such as employers, neighbors, or unwelcome admirers. Rather than promoting affection, these cards facilitated social commentary and personal grievances, highlighting the holiday's longstanding complexity.Flavors + Knowledge Podcast Produced by SimVal Media Group, USAMore Podcast Subscribe Free to the Flavors + Knowledge Newsletter

Hey hey BATT Family! Sorry to overload you with top ten lists recently, but here is Episode 30! As it's a multiple of five it is a top ten list and this week's episode is about Simultaneous Action games. This was recorded at Gen Con on July 30th, 2025 in the BATT hotel room, so it's a bit more echoey than usual. This topic was brought by the guest of the show, Derian, who has been a good friend of ours for years and runs all of the demo tables at Gen Con. If you've ever seen the dude wearing a bright orange shirt, a mohawk, and a utilikilt - that's our boy. We cover some really great games here and even had a couple (big ones) that were forgotten off of some of the lists. Give it a go, let us know what you think and we'll see you in two weeks with Episode 31 where we have the president of Level 99 Games on with us! --- This episode's segments: 00:00:00 - Intro / How We Know Each Other 00:02:18 - History / List Selection Criteria 00:07:23 - Scott's 10 (Broom Service) 00:10:13 - Derian's 10 (Broom Service) 00:12:15 - Mark's 10 (Smartphone, Inc.) 00:14:40 - Scott's 9 (Apples to Apples) 00:15:45 - Derian's 9 (Quacks of Quedlinberg) 00:18:00 - Mark's 9 (Raptor) 00:20:15 - Scott's 8 (7 Wonders) 00:23:46 - Derian's 8 (Niagara) 00:26:02 - Mark's 8 (Hadara) 00:28:32 - Scott's 7 (Get Bit) 00:31:36 - Derian's 7 (7 Wonders) 00:32:14 - Mark's 7 (Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition) 00:35:19 - Scott's 6 (Bezzerwizzer) 00:37:00 - Derian's 6 (Roll for the Galaxy) 00:38:44 - Mark's 6 (Faraway) 00:40:17 - Grand Gamer's Guild Sponsor 00:41:33 - Scott's 5 (Gloomhaven / Frosthaven) 00:43:16 - Derian's 5 (Between Two Cities) 00:45:10 - Mark's 5 (Antidote) 00:47:32 - Scott's 4 (Planet Unknown) 00:48:50 - Derian's 4 (On Tour) 00:50:36 - Mark's 4 (Incan Gold) 00:51:42 - Scott's 3 (Antidote) 00:52:24 - Derian's 3 (Libertalia: Winds of Galecrest) 00:53:30 - Mark's 3 (Tidal Blades: Banner Festival) 00:55:05 - Scott's 2 (On Tour) 00:56:46 - Derian's 2 (Orleans) 01:01:04 - Mark's 2 (El Grande) 01:04:02 - Scott's 1 (Bullet) 01:06:37 - Derian's 1 (Race for the Galaxy) 01:10:27 - Mark's 1 (Libertalia: Winds of Galecrest) 01:15:29 - Secret Door Sponsor 01:16:20 - Meeple Source Sponsor 01:17:23 - Victory Roll Sponsor 01:18:14 - Contact Info for BATT and Theater Geeks 01:19:25 - Outro --- Notes! 1) Scott's lead in on his number 10 is something that was referrenced in the Honorable Mentions! That'll be out with an Odds and Ends episode eventually. 2) In regards to El Grande, because the way Derian jumped in I didn't really fully explain why I picked it. The simultaneous selection is admittedly not that high here (really only during the scoring phases) but I find it to be so radically important to the game that it had to be that high. Realistically I should have had this probably a bit lower on the list, and it definitely would have been bounced lower as Bullet should have been my number 2, but I still like the game quite a bit and think it deserves to be here. 3) One other thing I found interesting listening to this episode back to back with our recent Top of 2025 lists is how consistent some of these opinions are. We played an enormous amount of games in the five months between these three recordings and we still managed to feel the way we did in both periods. Apologies for these being so close together though, the intent is that we'd actually start 2026 with Episode 31 but my schedule just got delayed significantly over the past few weeks and the edits just fell behind. So that's why they've lined up the way they have. 4) Libby scored 52 points as recorded, not 56. But I looked over the photo and found that she accidentally cheated and connected a 74 to a 73 in the South. Whoops. 50 points is still insane though. We’ll hear from Toto, Steely Dan, Doobie Bros, Christopher Cross, Kenny Loggins, Boz Scaggs, Seals & Crofts, Little River Band, Orleans and… Earth, Wind & Fire? (That last one leads to a spirited disagreement between Tom & Christopher) Among the highlights of this episode: - Michael McDonald explains the evolution of the Doobie Brothers’ sound - Christopher Cross talks about his debut album, which contained several Yacht Rock classics. - Steve Porcaro explains how a group of session players and friends morphed into Toto - Kenny Loggins remembers working with Stevie Nicks on “Whenever I Call You Friend” - Al Stewart deconstructs the story behind his biggest hit, “Year Of The Cat” - Boz Scaggs breaks down “Lido Shuffle” and “Lowdown” - We also hear from the most reluctant group in the Yacht Rock pantheon, Steely Dan, including a bonus cut from the Dan’s only foray into advertising jingles. We have so much to tell you about! In this episode, we dig into the life of Storme DeLarverie, a man who was born to a black mother and white father. Mom was a servant and Dad was wealthy. Because he was a child of black and white parents he was never issued a birth certificate and chose to celebrate his birthday on December 24th. His dad paid for his education but he was raised mostly by his grandfather. He joined the Ringling Brothers Circus as a show rider and began to get on stage at Jazz Clubs at only 15. He would travel Europe with a jazz ensemble before returning to the United States where he joined the Jewel Box Revue. The Jewel Box was at the time the only interracial drag show and it toured all over the country even to military bases. And Storme became the show's lone drag king and emcee. He was on hand at the Stonewall when the infamous uprising began in New York City aand may have been the one to kick off violence. He later went on to become the Guardian of Greenwich Village in this, wow this was a true American episode of the Family Plot Podcast.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/family-plot--4670465/support.
We visited renowned architect Bernard Khoury in his studio in Karantina, who offered a critical, unvarnished look at the reality of practicing architecture in Lebanon, contrasting it with the sugarcoated story of the "Phoenix coming out of its ashes". He discusses his career beginnings, the 2020 Beirut port explosion, and how his first project—the infamous B018 nightclub—was a radically specific and necessary response to the city's complex, macabre history and unstable political and economic context. Khoury shares his philosophical approach to architecture, which rejects stylistic gestures in favor of an obsession with specificity and a direct confrontation with Beirut's explosive nature, arguing for a practice that produces honest, if sometimes "sour" meaning in the present rather than succumbing to toxic simplifications. 00:00 The Sourness and Complexity of Beirut01:23 Bernard Khoury's Karantina Studio and the Beirut Explosion03:12 His First Project: B018 in Karantina04:01 The Illusion and Disillusion of the Post-War Era05:42 An Architect's Dilemma: Designing for an Expiry Date12:56 Solidere, Immaterial Ownership, and a New Urbanism15:44 The Cultural Significance of B01817:05 B018's Site: A Macabre History19:40 From Furniture Factory to Architecture Practice22:52 Khalil Khouri: Modern Architect with Certainties27:23 A Generational Difference in Practice28:57 Rejected Labels: What Bernard Khoury Hates to Be Called...31:41 Style vs. Specificity 36:00 Estrangement and Addiction to a Very Intense Environment42:00 Bernard Khoury's Criticism of Solidere's Historical Narrative Born in Beirut (1968), Bernard Khoury studied architecture at the Rhode Island school of Design (BFA 1990 / B.Arch 1991) and Harvard University (M.Arch 1993).
