Outro assunto abordado foi a obra de contenção às margens do Rio Tubarão. A intervenção foi necessária após danos causados por desmoronamentos. Com a movimentação de máquinas durante a construção do muro de contenção, parte da ciclovia existente na área foi danificada, o que gerou questionamentos de ouvintes sobre quem é o responsável pela recuperação: o Estado ou o município? A proposta, de autoria do prefeito Fernando Cruzetta, enfrentou uma votação acirrada e só foi aprovada graças ao voto de minerva do presidente da Câmara, Joel Cavanholi (PL). O projeto gerou ampla discussão entre os parlamentares. Votaram contra os vereadores Dovagner Baschirotto (MDB), Maiara Dalponte Martins (MDB), Marlise Maria Salvador Zomer (PSDB), Mirele Debiasi (PSDB) e Pedro João Orben (MDB). Já os votos favoráveis vieram de Genaina Coan (PL), Joel Cavanholi (PL), Josemar Sacom (PSD), Leandro Martins (PSD), Murilo Oliveira Hoffmann (NOVO) e Osvaldo Cruzetta (PP). Os tributos que antes iam direto para o governo agora voltam como incentivo ao produtor. Isso dá mais sustentabilidade ao município e acaba com a politicagem anterior”, afirmou Cavanholi. Por outro lado, o vereador Dovagner Baschirotto (MDB) esclareceu que a oposição não era contra o conteúdo do projeto, mas criticou a forma como ele tramitou rapidamente pelas comissões legislativas. “O nosso voto não foi contra o projeto, mas contra a forma como ele foi conduzido. Está em tramitação na Câmara de Vereadores de Orleans o projeto de lei que cria o Programa Agro 360, uma das principais iniciativas da atual gestão para impulsionar a agricultura familiar e promover o desenvolvimento rural no município. O programa prevê uma série de incentivos financeiros e operacionais voltados ao fortalecimento da produção agropecuária, à melhoria da infraestrutura nas propriedades e à ampliação do acesso a tecnologias e serviços no campo. A proposta foi elaborada com base em diagnósticos técnicos, consultas ao setor produtivo e modelos bem-sucedidos adotados em outras regiões. De acordo com a Secretaria de Agricultura, o Agro 360 atenderá produtores rurais que comprovarem residência e atividade agrícola em Orleans, além de estarem em dia com suas obrigações municipais. A agricultura representa hoje cerca de 35% da economia local, o que reforça a importância da proposta. April 1975, as the Vietnam War was ending, President Ford authorized Operation Babylift where thousands of Vietnamese children were flown out of the country to be adopted in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Florida. At refueling stops at Hickam Air Force Base near Honolulu Nebraska native Gwen Phalen helped care for infants. She recorded a letter April 8, 1975 to her grandmother in Orleans, Nebraska recounting the experience.

Hansen's Sno-Bliz and the Story of the New Orleans Snowball In today's episode, we head over to Hansen's Sno-Bliz on Tchoupitoulas Street, in uptown New Orleans. We visit with Ashley Hansen, granddaughter of Ernest and Mary Hansen, and the current owner of Hansen's Sno-Bliz. Hansen's is the oldest snowball stand in the United States, and is currently open for its 86th season in 2025. In the 1930s, Ernest Hansen created the first machine to shave ice into the snowy powder essential for a terrific New Orleans snowball. That machine is still put to daily use in the shop today! Mary Hansen ran the business, while Ernest was working as a machinist on the ships docked along the Mississippi. In their later years, the Hansen's ran the snowball stand together. As they got older, their granddaughter Ashley was their to assist, and ultimately to continue the tradition. "There are no shortcuts to quality” - Mary Hansen Mary Hansen uttered these words frequently, and ran her business by this code. Today, Ashley continues setting the standard, making the syrups from scratch each day, and using the best possible ingredients. Mary's words are all over the shop - on signs and on every plastic cup sold at Hansen's today. In late September, firefighters in flame-resistant Nomex were strung out along a fireline. It ran midslope through a pine and hardwood forest above the Klamath River and the small northern California town of Orleans.Several members of the Karuk tribe were laying down strands of fire with drip torches.Aja Conrad, who runs the tribal natural resource department's environmental education field institute, was the firing boss trainee.
