Sam Bloom is a world champion adaptive surfer, a competitive kayak racer, a public speaker, world traveler, and a wife and a mother to three boys. The story of her accident resulting in spinal cord injury and the recovery process for Sam and her family is the inspiration for the feature film Penguin Bloom starring Naomi Watts and Andrew Lincoln. Sam is fortunate to have many opportunities in her life, and for that she is grateful. She also refreshingly candid and unafraid to share the challenges she experiences and the duality of living with a spinal cord injury. Charles and Jon talk to Australian author, broadcaster and wildlife nut Bradley Trevor Greive (BTG) from his home in California.BTG has an extraordinary CV: he was a paratrooper and cartoonist before becoming a successful author and broadcaster. In between he found time to win the French Polynesian Rock Lifting Championship, graduate from the Russian Cosmonaut Space Program, spend 6 years working on Brown Bears in Alaska and still practice on his ukulele. And he devotes considerable energy to supporting conservation work around the world. As you might imagine we had plenty to talk about. In an entertaining hour Bradley talks about some of his formative experiences with wildlife as a child living around the world, his research work with the enormous Brown Bears of Alaska's Alexander Archipelago, and some of the many painful encounters he has had with wildlife along the way. He has plenty of useful advice that every mammalwatcher needs to hear. For instance you will learn what not to wear if you don't want a flying fox to ejaculate into your ear, and what not to do if it happens anyway. For more information visit www.mammalwatching.com/podcastNotes: read BTG's Wikipedia page and you will almost certainly be familiar with some of his work. From his 'The Blue Day Book' to the (really very lovely) Penguin Bloom book and movie on Netflix. He provided several of the voices on Finding Nemo and his new show Queer Planet launched on Peacock in June 2024. Robert Connolly is one of Australia's great modern directors, having exploded onto the film scene some twenty years ago with The Bank, which was nominated for Best Picture and Best Director at the AFI awards, which he swiftly followed up with an impressive body of work that includes Paper Planes, The Turning, Balibo, Blueback, and the 2021 adaptation of Jane Harper's best seller, The Dry.That film, which featured Eric Bana as Detective Aaron Falk, set the box office afire in 2021 alongside High Ground and Penguin Bloom, with the trio making Australian film history as the first time that three Aussie flicks topped the local box office. Given the success of The Dry, it made sense that Connolly and Bana would return to Jane Harper's Falk series with the second novel, Force of Nature. Where The Dry focused on a murder mystery in the middle of nowhere, Force of Nature takes Detective Falk to the Grampians to try and find missing business woman Alice (Anna Torv). Alice did not return with her colleagues (Deborra-Lee Furness, Robin McLeavy, Sisi Stringer, Lucy Ansell) after a hiking retreat, raising suspicion and concern. With heavy rains on the way, time is of the essence to find Alice before it's too late. While Force of Nature operates in the thriller genre, with Connolly harkening back to The Bank with a subplot about manipulative financial institutions, it is better approached as a character study of people under pressure. Falk's return to the Grampians sees him recalling his youth when his mother also went missing in the same area, and it's here that Force of Nature lingers into an examination of what family means in difficult times. Eric Bana has found a character he can comfortably slip into with Detective Aaron Falk, a figure who sits alongside Detective Jay Swan and Jack Irish as a compelling investigator getting to the bottom of a mystery. It helps that Bana is comfortably supported by a reliable cast, including the always great Anna Torv who owns the film, the welcome presence of Robin McLeavy who gives a subdued and powerful performance, and solid performances from newcomers Sisi Stringer and Lucy Ansell.Curiously, even though I've been interviewing Australian filmmakers for almost a decade now, this is the first time I've had a chat with Robert Connolly. I'd previously aimed to catch up with him on the media trail for The Dry or Blueback, but circumstances meant that this was our first time chatting. As I joined the Zoom meeting, Robert immediately noticed the vast array of blurays and DVDs that sit behind me, pointing out the Agnes Varda Criterion Collection. Our conversation starts there, and ferrets through different avenues of discussion, weaving in and out about Robert's work as a filmmaker, what it means to support emerging talent in the way he does as an executive producer with films like Alena Lodkina's Petrol, Sari Braithwaite's Because We Have Each Other, and Jub Clerc's Sweet As, before we settle on discussing why Force of Nature is the hardest shoot he's embarked on yet.Force of Nature launches in Australian cinemas from 8 February 2024, and if there's one reason to see it on the big screen, it's to become overwhelmed by Andrew Commis' immersive cinematography. No doubt if this one does well that we'll see Robert adapting the third and final Falk book, Exiles, down the line.If you like what we do here at The Curb, then make sure to listen to other interviews at TheCurb.com.au, and help keep The Curb independent by joining our Patreon from as little as $1 a month at Patreon.com/thecurbau. I am so excited about this week's guest having followed her story (and had her on our ultimate wish list) for many years now. Some of you may already know her, but if not, Sam Bloom is a world champion surfer, adventure traveller, best-selling author, neurology nurse and mother of three boys whose story also became a global hit movie, Penguin Bloom. That heartbreaking story begins in 2013 when Sam was paralysed in a terrifying accident in Thailand when she fell through a rotting balcony and it was the unlikely arrival of a beautiful magpie chick, Penguin, that helped her gruelling recovery back in Australia. The photos captured by her photographer husband, Cameron, were later made into a book written alongside legendary author Bradley Trevor Grieve and then became the basis of Penguin Bloom starring Naomi Watts. Having pored over Penguin Bloom many times, it was surreal to be able to hear Sam chat so candidly about grief and redefining joy in real time – she is so refreshingly honest about the defining trauma in her life and that the challenges endure everyday. But what I also loved was having the chance to also ask Sam about all the other parts of her life that perhaps don't relate so much to the story many know her for. I could go on forever but I'll let Sam tell you the rest herself – this is one of my favourite chats to date and I am so grateful for her time. I hope you enjoy as much as I did! A story of hope, resilience and thriving through life's biggest fears. Sam Bloom joins us on the podcast for this special episode. Sam is a a motivational speaker, a World para surfing champion, mum, wife , survivor, author and absolutely divine soul. I met Sam and her husband Cam several months ago at an event she was speaking at, and I clicked with them both instantly through their warmth and kindness. Ten years ago, Sam's life changed forever in the blink of an eye, a heartbeat, a split second in time. She had everything she had always dreamed of. She'd travelled extensively, fulfilled her childhood dream of becoming a nurse and was a happily married mother of three young boys. Without warning, the dream turned into a nightmare when on a 2013 family holiday in Thailand, Sam fell through a rotten balcony railing and crashed six metres onto the concrete below. Lucky to be alive, she'd suffered devastating injuries, including severe damage to her spinal cord that left her paralysed from the chest down. The conversation I had with Sam was moving, honest, raw and in her words, different to the many interviews she has had before. We discuss living through life's biggest fears and so much more. If you don't know Sam Bloom for her sporting feats – she's won two golds and one bronze at the World Para Surfing Championships and represented Australia in paracanoeing – then you might know her as the inspiration for the global hit movie Penguin Bloom. In 2013, Sam's life changed dramatically when, while on holiday in Thailand, she leaned against a rotten balcony railing. As it fell away so did Sam, plummeting six metres onto the concrete below. The accident left her paralysed from the chest down.Coming to terms with her new reality, Sam fell into a depression, grieving an old life and sense of self. Then, the unlikely arrival of an injured baby magpie – who the family called Penguin – helped her recover.A lot has happened since we last spoke to Sam in 2019, but she continues to defy barriers in life and sport, inspiring people around the world to do the same. In this chat with our executive editor Kara Byers, Sam talks about what sport means to her, chasing a third title and what it was like to have her life given the Hollywood treatment. In this episode we discuss suicidal thoughts. HAPPY NEW YEAR!We normally like to talk about older movies, but on this episode of Retro Grade Podcast, we look back at movies that came out in 2021, and give our SPOILER FREE thoughts about what we liked and did not like during the past year. We talk about the big blockbusters like Spider-Man: No Way Home, The Suicide Squad, Fast 9, and The Matrix Resurrections.* Some smaller films you might have missed like Penguin Bloom, Last Night in Soho and Pig. We also talk about movies that surprised us, like Titane, Malignant, and The Green Knight. And we talk about movies that we didn't really agree with each other on, like Jungle Cruise, Space Jam 2, and Mortal Kombat. What were some of your favorites we might have missed? What was your favorite movie of the year? Let us know on Twitter or Discord! DM us on Twitter or Instagram for the discord invite. Enjoy!*There is an error on the reporting of some facts during this segment. It is not true that Hugo Weaving missed filming due to COVID, but due to a prior engagement and the inflexibility of the film's production. However, cinematographer John Toll left the production due to an undisclosed medical situation with his family, giving the chance for Daniele Massaccesi to go from the film's camera operator to its' director of photography. Was this situation influenced by COVID? What difference did the three months of suspended filming mean for Matrix 4, or other films shot between February 2020 and now? (Maybe it's something we can talk about at an other time?)Music is from Triune Digital and audio clips pulled from movies we will be reviewing in other episodes.Artwork by @jannelle_o

Welcome to the 63rd episode of Ten Questions where Adam talks to Shaun Grant - the multi-AACTA Award winning screenwriter of Nitram.Shaun’s debut film, Snowtown, about the infamous Snowtown murders in South Australia in the 1990s – won multiple awards and screened at Critics’ Week at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. And that’s when Shaun’s career took off – writing the feature films Jasper Jones, Berlin Syndrome, Penguin Bloom, The True Story of the Kelly Gang and Nitram. He also wrote for David Fincher’s Mindhunter on Netflix and the mini-series, Deadline Gallipoli. He’s possibly Australia’s most in demand screenwriter, known for his willingness to tackle the weighty emotional subjects that others might see as too dangerous or too difficult to make.Nitram premiered at Cannes a few months ago where the response to the film was unaminously positive. And that’s where my conversation with Shaun started. When asked about the time he was most happy, he said “now”. And he wasn’t just referring to his professional success, which he credits as being partly due to his continuing working relationship with the director Justin Kurzel, but also the fact that he’d recently got married."The violence isn’t on the screen. It’s not that what interests me. It’s what leads to it."More about Out of the Question: https://www.nearly.com.au/out-of-the-question-with-adam-zwar/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. This is a public episode. Director Justin Kurzel and writer Shaun Grant join the Cinema Australia Podcast to discuss their latest collaboration, Nitram. Nitram is a brilliant but highly disturbing film, that will no doubt divide audiences. It depicts the events leading up to one of the darkest chapters in Australian history - the Port Arthur shootings. Kurzel and Grant have been making movies together since 2011 as director and writer respectively. Their first film, Snowtown, landed like a sledgehammer and marked the arrival of two extraordinary filmmaking talents. Nitram is their third collaboration following Snowtown, and the provocative joy ride that is True History of the Kelly Gang. Kurzel's filmography also includes Macbeth and Assissin's Creed, which both starred Michael Fassbender. He also directed a segment of one of my favourite Australian films, The Turning. Shaun Grant's other writing credits include Berlin Syndrome directed by Cate Shortland, Jasper Jones directed by Rachel Perkins, an episode of the American television series Mindhunter, and another film released this year, and another on of my favourites, Penguin Bloom. We do go into some depth during this interview, and I understand that it may not be easy listening for everyone. We discuss the pairs thoughts on Port Arthur conspiracies, Justin's discussions with victims, and why they wanted to make a film about Martin Bryant. Kurzel and Grant also discuss their eagerness to see Nitram with an Australian audience, and being knocked back by Screen Australia before going on to work with Stan and Madman to make the film. It's not all serious though, we do have a few laughs along the way and I ask a question that gets quite a reaction: What happened to Sean Keenan's unbelievably cool cowboy cardigan from True History of the Kelly Gang. Anyway… enjoy.

Have you ever heard of crows who leave gifts for people who feed them? We'll tell you a few stories and ask a few probing questions. Did the crows really leave them? And if so, was it because they felt grateful or did their moms force them to? Maybe they're just buttering us up to keep the gravy train rolling. And how is that different than scrawling thank-you notes to Grandma or handing your teacher a five-dollar Starbucks card with an apple on it? Join Ann and Lisa as they monkey with these and other cool crow puzzles. Want to follow up on our sources or watch any of the videos we mention? Go to ThisAnimalLIfe.com and click on Show Notes. Sam Bloom and Steph Aceglav catch up about Sam's new book Heartache & Birdsong and talk about life, Penguin Bloom, kindness, mental health, travel, sport and why it's so important not to put your dreams on hold.
Sam Bloom is one of Australia's most remarkable and resilient women. Her life-changing story begins with the blink of an eye, a heartbeat, a split second in time. That’s all it took for Sam’s life to change forever. Sam had everything she had always dreamed of. She’d travelled extensively, fulfilled her childhood dream of becoming a nurse and was a happily married mother of three young boys. She spent her time raising her family on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, and ran, swam, biked and surfed every chance she had. Life was bliss. Without warning, the dream turned into a nightmare. Back in 2013, while on a family holiday in Thailand, Sam leant against a rotten balcony railing and fell through it, crashing six metres onto the concrete below. She was lucky to be alive and had suffered devastating injuries, including severe damage to her spinal cord that left her completely paralysed from the chest down. Broken and hopeless, Sam reached her outer limits of physical and mental suffering. And then Penguin arrived. Penguin was a baby magpie who fell from a tree and was rescued by the Bloom family who cared for her until she was strong. Yet while free to leave, she didn’t. she lived with the Bloom family for two years and in that time, gave Sam the sense of purpose, hope, and courage she was missing. This little bird changed Sam’s life. The incredible story of Penguin Bloom was turned into a book and is soon to be a major Hollywood movie, starring Naomi Watts and Andrew Lincoln. Now, Sam has just shared her story for the first time in a new book, Sam Bloom: Heartache & Birdsong. In the book, she writes about what it is really like to face life in a wheelchair. The new book is humbling, heartbreaking and uplifting in equal measure. You can purchase the book here. In our conversation today, we talk about: Life before Sam’s accident. The day her life and body was broken. The months that followed the accident and the day she was told she’d never walk again. Her new book Sam Bloom: Heartache & Birdsong, where she writes about what it is really like to face life in a wheelchair. What she has learnt about resilience and adversity. The biggest misconceptions about life in a wheelchair. Getting back on a surfboard and how that felt. Penguin – the little magpie that changed her life. The upcoming movie about her life, starring Naomi Watts as Sam. To purchase Sam Bloom: Heartache & Birdsong, click here.
