His artistry and activism have paved the way for generations, blending socially conscious themes with a commitment to equity, unity, and creative integrity. Since their debut in 1991, Speech and Arrested Development have been a groundbreaking influence in hip-hop, celebrated for their bold reimagining of the genre. Their debut album, 3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life of…, sold over 4 million copies and garnered numerous accolades, including Grammys for Best New Artist and Best Rap Single (“Tennessee”), two MTV Awards, a Soul Train Music Award, and an NAACP Image Award. Rolling Stone named them Band of the Year, and VH-1 recognized Arrested Development as one of the greatest hip-hop artists of all time. Speech's contributions were spotlighted in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's acclaimed documentary South Has Got Something to Say, where he remarked, “There would be no Outkast without Arrested Development”—a powerful reminder of Arrested Development's role in shaping Southern hip-hop and paving the way for future icons. Arrested Development's fusion of Afrocentric spirituality, social consciousness, and community-centered themes forged a path in hip-hop that few have rivaled, influencing artists globally and solidifying their legacy as cultural innovators. Despite these contributions, Speech and Arrested Development's pioneering role in popular culture is often underrecognized, though their influence is undeniable. In 2024, Speech's legendary status was further cemented as he joined an elite lineup performing with Queen Latifah, Common, De La Soul on the CBS Grammy Tribute to 50 Years of Hip Hop. This performance underscored his contributions to the genre, which were also recently honored by the State of Georgia with the prestigious Privilege House Resolution, recognizing his lifelong dedication to the arts, social justice, and cultural advocacy. Tank, is an American R&B singer, songwriter, and record producer. He began his career as a backing vocalist for R&B singers Aaliyah and Ginuwine, and signed a recording contract with the former's record label, Blackground Records as a performing act in 1998. His 2001 single, "Maybe I Deserve" peaked within the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 and led his debut studio album, Force of Nature (2001). It peaked within the top ten of the Billboard 200, while his second album, One Man (2002), peaked within the top 20 and was met with mixed critical reception. Following a five-year hiatus, he entered a joint venture with Motown to release his third album, Sex, Love & Pain (2007). Met with his furthest commercial success, it peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 and was preceded by the Billboard Hot 100-top 50 single, "Please Don't Go". He parted ways with the labels in favor of Atlantic Records to release his following albums: Now or Never (2010), This Is How I Feel (2012), Stronger (2014), Sex, Love & Pain II (2014), and Savage (2017), the latter of which spawned the platinum-certified single "When We". Following his ninth album Elevation (2019), his tenth album, R&B Money (2022) was announced as his final due to hearing loss in his right ear, which hampered his musical ability.[3] In 2007, he formed the R&B trio TGT with contemporaries Ginuwine and Tyrese, with whom he released one studio album (2013). Along with recording, Tank has been credited with songwriting and production for other artists including Kelly Rowland, Chris Brown, Monica, Jamie Foxx, Omarion, LeToya Luckett, NLT, and KeKe Wyatt. His other ventures include his record label R&B Money, which has signed frequent collaborator J. Valentine; the two began hosting a namesake podcast in 2022, which enlists prominent figures in the genre as guests. Tank has been nominated for four Grammy Awards, a Soul Train Music Award, and his podcast was nominated for Best Work of Music Journalism - Multimedia at the 2023 International Music Journalism Awards. It is an honor and privilege to welcome singer-songwriter and performer Liv Warfield to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. A former track star and gymnast, Peoria, Illinois-born Liv Warfield began building her legend in Portland, Oregon. Despite having no formal background in singing, she gained the respect of local superstars and became an icon in her own right. While she takes cues from musical influences like Nina Simone, Etta James, Mavis Staples, Sade, Tina Turner, and Mary J. Blige, Warfield has carved out a style all her own, which can best be described as “alternative soul with a lil bit of Rock ‘n' Roll.” In 2006, she self-released her debut album, Embrace Me. By 2009, she caught the eye of the one-and-only Prince and ultimately joined his group, the “New Power Generation.” After touring for several years and soaking up as much knowledge as she could from the ultimate music mentor, Warfield made her big splash on the national scene in 2014, first as a featured artist for VH1's “You Oughta Know” campaign and then with the release of her major label debut album “The Unexpected,” which was executive produced by Prince. What followed were show-stopping performances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Late Show with David Letterman, and The Arsenio Hall Show; a 2014 Soul Train Music Award and nominations for two others; a BET Best New Artist Award nomination; an interview with National Public Radio; and high-profile cosigns from Lionel Richie, Cyndi Lauper, and Nancy Wilson of HEART. That same year, Warfield's performance closing out Essence Fest was hailed as one of the most memorable after-shows at the New Orleans House of Blues. In 2015, the accolades grew, with Warfield and the NPG Hornz being named one of the top 10 bands to see at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. It's no wonder she has left celebrities like Letterman declaring it's time to “cancel show business!” In 2017, Warfield began the next phase of her ascension, collaborating with another of her childhood influences, the aforementioned Nancy Wilson, to create the band Roadcase Royale. Their lead single, “Get Loud,” was featured prominently in the 2017 Women's March, and they released their debut album, First Things First, later that year. If that weren't enough, their remake of HEART's “These Dreams” was featured in Molly's Game, which starred Idris Elba, Jessica Chastain, and Kevin Costner. Warfield recently recorded music for the Oscar-nominated HBO documentary Da Bronx. She also tipped her hat into the theater realm to rave reviews playing Madame ZinZanni in the Chicago version of Teatro ZinZanni. This past summer, Liv Warfield auditioned for the NBC talent competition America's Got Talent: Season 19. Liv and her band performed an original song: “Stare,” that received a standing ovation from not only judges Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, Sofia Vergara, and Simon Cowell but also a Golden Buzzer from the Got Talent creator. During the AGT: Season 19 Quarterfinals, Liv and the band blew the audience away by performing “The Unexpected,” a song Prince wrote for her. In this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Liv Warfield spoke about the lessons she learned from Prince, her time on AGT, and performing in Teatro ZinZanni. Det här är berättelsen om den skönsjungande talangen från Atlanta som blev en av 00-talets största artister, och som 2024 gör halvtidsshowen på Super Bowl. Lyssna på alla avsnitt i Sveriges Radio Play. Atlanta, tidigt 90-tal. Om L.A. L.A.
Story By: Gail NoblesFirst, let's talk about rap music and the music industry. Today rap music is a more complex thing to me than it was when it first started. Rap music became like a street thing with violence. It crushed my dreams from wanting to become a rapper. When rap first started, it was simply all about having fun and entertainment. It started in the early 70s. It was a good thing in the 80s. It kept some people off the street where I'm from. Some of us had dreams and wanted to become famous and make rap records. We would get together in school and have rap contest. Those were the good old days. Our parents told us we wouldn't make it that way. I believe we could have back then considering what's going on now. It seemed like the music industry began to change and so did hip-hop in the 90s. I saw how hip-hop was affecting things. I didn't know what was going on in 1989 when Whitney Houston got booed, and why I was hearing all the talk about her not being black enough at the Soul Train Music Awards. I believe something was happening then. Then everybody was talking about hip-hop singing Mary J. Blige in 1992. But by then, Whitney Houston went on to act in a romantic thriller film The Bodyguard in 1992. But getting back to hip-hop, it seemed in the 90s rap music was popular because of the West Coast - East Coast thing. By then, I wasn't interested in rap that much. To me, some people started looking at black as hip-hop. I never consider the race thing in music as far as all of the violence. Music was becoming a violent thing to me because Tupac got shot and Biggie got shot. It made me think that music was not just music anymore and hip-hop wasn't hip-hop anymore. Then all of a sudden I was hearing that Michael Jackson was facing allegations of child sexual abuse in 1993 and 2003 then in 2009 he dead in 2012 Whitney Houston died our biggest stars after that prince died in 2016 then R. Kelly went to jail in 2022 for sex trafficking now I'm seeing P. Diddy in the news. Things ain't right in the music world. That's what the headlines have been telling us. Not tabloids with the gossip, but headlines and television. So what's behind the music? Why are all these bad things happening to our favorite stars? Why are they being accused of sex crimes? Why are they going to jail? And these are very successful people. Think on these things.Thank you for listening to CB news. I'm Gail Nobles.
Intro by: Gail NoblesMusic: Samplefocus.comUsage: Standard LicensePhoto: Mika-photographyUsage: Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 UnportedHello! I'm Gail Nobles. Aaliyah recorded a song titled one in One In A Million for her second studio album of the same name. One In A Million was nominated for best R&B/Soul Single-Female at the 1998 Soul Train Music Awards.Aaliyah sang One In A Million but was one in a million and still one in a million because she's admired and fans are still showing their love for her. You know she had to be a very special person. There's a spirit in all of us telling our hearts that she should still be here. We miss her very much. Aaliyah was ahead of us. Her music and words are left for us. Your love is one is one in a million. You know you can talk to God about people that you miss. The Lord listens and pays attention to his people. I couldn't tell you if I didn't know. God will give you the desires of your heart (Psalms 37:4). All things are possible but we must believe. In the year of 2001, when Aaliyah passed away, so did my mom. That same year. As I prayed in the hospital room, the Lord brought my mom back to me a few more hours. I didn't know then what I know now.But God will answer prayers. The Lord said to me: “My power is not gone.” The Lord is still working miracles. We must spend time with the Lord to know what we have in him. The kingdom of God is within you (Saint Luke 17:21). In him you can be one in a million. Think on the words one in a million as you think about God and as you think about Aaliyah.

B. Cox looks back at Mary J. Blige's debut classic album What's the 411? as it turns 30. As the youngest signee of Andre Harrell's Uptown Records, the New York-born singer was brought under the tutelage of producer and executive Sean "Diddy" Combs for debut album. Utilizing samples of popular hip-hop records from the 80s matched with drums to complement the sweet vocals of Blige, she burst onto the scene with three smash singles in the summer of 1992. Working with the likes of Cory Rooney, Dave "Jam" Hall, Mark Morales and Devante Swing, the album shot to the top of the charts. The unique sound, coupled with Blige's persona, fashion and relatability, earned Blige her first nickname: "The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul".The album was certified triple platinum and won Blige Best New R&B Artist and Best R&B album at the 1993 Soul Train Music Awards. Georgy Porgy!!! Episode 26 is all about the smooth vocalist that we all know as Mr. Eric Benet. Eric Benét is a contemporary R&B singer with mild hip-hop and strong adult contemporary influences. As a teenager, he performed in a family vocal group (appropriately named Benét) with his sister and cousin. The group signed with EMI and released an eponymous album in 1992 that largely went unnoticed. Eric blazed his own trail as a solo artist shortly afterward, signing to Warner Bros. and releasing his debut album, True to Myself, in the fall of 1996. A Day in the Lifefollowed in 1999. Its first single, a cover of Toto's "Georgy Porgy," was a moderate radio hit, but it was the album's second single, "Spend My Life with You" (featuring Tamia), that helped put him on the map. The song went to number one on the Billboard R&B chart, was certified gold, and received a nomination for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group. Benét's popularity was on the rise, and A Day in the Life went platinum and earned a Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul Album, Male. The record topped Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It spawned four singles, including "Need U Bad" and "Bust Your Windows", both of which peaked in the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart and the former of which became Sullivan's first and only number one on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. In 2021, she released her critically acclaimed first EP, Heaux Tales, which spawned the single "Pick Up Your Feelings". Sullivan has received one Billboard Women in Music Award, two Soul Train Music Awards and two BET Awards over the course of her career. Thanks to Lauren for her time and vulnerability this week. She is the co-author of The Boss of You: Everything A Woman Needs to Know to Start, Run, and Maintain Her Own Business. You can read more about Lauren (and sign up for her coaching services!) at laurenbacon.com. You really ought to listen to Cranes in the Sky either before or after you listen to Lauren's story. Grammy Awards are a complicated measure of whether a song is worth your time or not but it's worth mentioning that Cranes did win the 2017 Grammy for Best R&B Performance along with a 2017 BET Her Award and the 2017 Ashford and Simpson Songwriter's Award at the Soul Train Music Awards. If you read a little about Cranes (including this pretty cool interview between Solange and her sister who you might have heard of) you can see how Lauren's story is quite similar to the events that inspired Solange to write the song.As always, you can get in touch with The Volume Knob on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or at our website volumeknob.net.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame even named the AD smash “Tennessee” one of the 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll.Speech has continued to be a trailblazer with the group and as a solo artist sharing stages with Nelson Mandela, Minister Louis Farrakhan, Hilary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama, he is the categorical definition of legendary. In this episode, we'll talk about Speech's rise as a musician, his passion for positivity and faith and we have an amazing conversation about personal growth and how we, from many different races, can come together for a more positive world. You can learn more about Speech and all of his amazing projects at https://www.brotherspeech.comDo you have a topic you'd like me to discuss? This week Christian meets up with Prince Protege' Liv Warfield to discuss her musical life, what it's like leaving collegiate athletics to pursue music instead, working with mentors Prince and Nancy Wilson and charting her own destiny on becoming a big voice in today's rock n soul world.Liv was a member of Prince's New Power Generation (NPG); Prince was also her mentor for her solo career. Liv had been in the midst of working on her third studio album when Prince passed away, so plans for her release came to a halt. While working on new material with him, although the album wasn't complete at the time, when Prince heard “Mantra,” it immediately caught his attention. The album came to a halt after Prince's passing but now, three years later, Warfield is releasing her new powerful single to fans. “Mantra” was written by Warfield and guitarist Ryan Waters, backed by a 42-piece orchestra, with orchestral arrangements composed by Grammy-Award winning conductor Mateo Messina (for the film, “Juno”).After a period of depression when Prince passed, Liv took a break, but then started playing shows again in 2016, perfecting her sound, which became a lifeline for both Liv and her musical partner guitarist Ryan Waters. They began writing new music, and their creative energy caught the attention of Nancy Wilson of Heart in 2017. It was then, that Warfield and Waters formed the group with Wilson, Roadcase Royale. Their lead single, “Get Loud,” was featured prominently in 2017's Women's March; and the band released their debut album, “First Things First,” later that year. Warfield and Waters spent the next year playing to sold-out arenas, opening for rock legend Bob Seger, and recorded a remake of the classic Heart song, “These Dreams,” which was featured in the biopic, “Molly's Game.”Warfield's style has been described as “alternative soul with a ‘lil bit of Rock ‘n' Roll.” With her self-released her debut album in 2006 titled “Embrace Me,” she caught the eye of Prince and joined his group, the “New Power Generation (NPG).” In 2014, Liv released her sophomore album, Executive Co-Produced by Prince, titled “The Unexpected.” She became a featured artist for VH1's “You Oughta Know” campaign, which led to musical performances on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “The Late Show with David Letterman” and “The Arsenio Hall Show.” Additionally, Warfield received a 2014 Soul Train Music Award for “Best Contemporary Jazz Artist” with two additional Soul Train nominations (“Best New Artist” and “Best Independent R&B/Soul Performance”); and a BET “Best New Artist Award” nomination. She also collaborated with Cindy Lauper and Nancy Wilson of Heart; and opened for Lionel Richie at the Montreax Jazz Festival. That same year, Warfield's performance, which closed out Essence Fest, was hailed as one of the most memorable after shows at the New Orleans House of Blues by fans and critics.https://livwarfieldofficial.com/https://open.spotify.com/artist/1PvhwiNOSVtKIuuphyTZO2?si=y8ytVy2VTdGqZKR0x6mS6A
