The Cannes Lineup is complete and the schedule is out, and we have a jury, so J. Catherine and Andy cover all the things of note there before the stars start arriving on the croisette next week. And then J. Catherine has been seeing a handful of things at the Chicago Critics Festival, including SORRY, BABY, FANTASY LIFE, OBEX, and FAMILIAR TOUCH. And a lengthy Special Presentations digression on The Four Seasons, The Rehearsal, and experimental film in Chicago. We are in the thick of prestige release season, so we have the opportunity to look at some very prominent festival players that are not available for general audiences. Jesse and Andy have discussions about A REAL PAIN, ANORA, and BLITZ, all now available in theaters or on streaming. We also offer a small DOG ON TRIAL update and go long on Special Presentations. Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton is in talks to helm the fourth Spider-Man movie for Sony and Marvel Studios. While neither Sony or Marvel have provided a comment at this time, this is in line with previous reports and claims that a fourth Spider-Man film with Tom Holland was being fast-tracked to begin shooting next year. Though he only has one MCU feature under his belt, Cretton is already beginning to feel like a bit of an elder statesman within the Marvel Studios stable of filmmakers, having been previously attached to The Kang Dynasty before it became Avengers: Doomsday and creating the Wonderman series that is in production. Early reviews from Venice Film Festival screenings for Joker: Folie a Deux, the sequel to 2019's Joker, hit the internet last week, with the response to the musical follow-up decidedly mixed. Critics seem divided on the film's uneven tone, with criticisms citing a plodding narrative and underutilization of Lady Gaga. Positive takes celebrated the performances of Phoenix and Gaga, as well as Philips' direction. In a July 2024 interview, Kevin Fiege confirmed more Marvel Studios Special Presentations, like Werewolf By Night and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, were on the way, with one actively in production at the time– sounds like old news, but now, Marvel Head of Streaming, Television and Animation Brad Winderbaum, doubled down on the promise while speaking with Comicbook.com. Previously, Feige detailed that the Special Presentation wouldn't air in 2025, but 2026, though Winderbaum's answer seems to insinuate it could be sooner. James Earl Jones, the legendary actor known for his iconic baritone as Darth Vader in Star Wars, died Monday at his Dutchess County, N.Y. home. He was 93. Warner Brothers has released the trailer for A Minecraft Movie, starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa and directed by Jared Hess. The game-based film premieres in theaters on April 4, 2025. Ahead of the main Emmy Awards scheduled for Sunday, September 15, last weekend saw the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony held at downtown Los Angeles' Peacock Theater, where the FX network enjoyed an incredibly successful evening. With 14 wins, Shogun broke the record for a single season of television, while The Bear took home 7 awards as well. Notable wins include The Dark Knight's Nestor Carbonell as the best guest actor for his role as the Portuguese merchant Rodrigues, and Jamie Lee Curtis for best guest actress in a comedy series for her appearance in The Bear, her first Emmy win. Alison Brie has been cast as a key villain role of Evil-Lyn in Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films' live-action take on Masters of the Universe. Only Murders in the Building has been renewed for season five. Currently, season four is dropping weekly episodes on Hulu every Tuesday, leading up to the finale on October 29. Netflix has greenlit the long-rumored Twilight animated series, now in production. Based on Stephenie Meyer's Midnight Sun, it retells Twilight from Edward Cullen's perspective. In a deleted blog post, Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin criticized creative choices in House of the Dragon's second season, hinting at future posts addressing issues. HBO responded, citing the need for "difficult choices" due to the scope of Martin's work. A Reacher spinoff is in development at Amazon Prime, with showrunner Nick Santora writing. The series is expected to focus on Frances Neagley, played by Maria Sten. In a PEOPLE interview, Michael Keaton revealed his real name is Michael Douglas, but he had to change it when joining SAG-AFTRA in the 1970s. Now, he plans to use a hybrid name, Michael Keaton Douglas, for future projects.
Sing Sing is a 2023 American drama film directed by Greg Kwedar, who co-wrote the screenplay and co-produced with Clint Bentley. Based on the real-life Rehabilitation Through the Arts program at Sing Sing Maximum Security Prison, the film centers on a group of inmates involved in the creation of theatrical stage shows through the program. It stars professional actors Colman Domingo and Paul Raci, alongside many real-life formerly incarcerated men who were themselves alumni of the program during their incarceration, including Clarence "Divine Eye" Maclin and Jon-Adrian "JJ" Velazquez. The film premiered in the Special Presentations program at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. It was released by A24 in the United States on July 12, 2024.
On episode 247 of the AwardsWatch podcast, AwardsWatch Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade and Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello take a look at the newest announcements from the Toronto International Film Festival and New York Film Festival, changes to the Gotham Awards and the kickoff of International Feature Film Oscar submissions. Beginning with the TIFF announcements of new Gala and Special Presentations, we look into the heavy Venice to TIFF crossover with titles like Babygirl, Queer and The Brutalist (all skipping Telluride) as well as the 'Canadian Premiere' of Jason Reitman's Saturday Night, detailing the 90 minutes leading up to the first ever episode of NBC's Saturday Night Live's debut in 1975. Toronto will also get the world premiere of On Swift Horses, with Jacob Elordi, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Diego Calva, which appears to be its sole major fest showing. We then venture into today's NYFF Spotlight additions, including A Real Pain, Emilia Pérez and Maria. We talk about studio strategies and the paths festivals can create for determining awards contenders and how flying a bit under the radar, like Netflix is doing this year, becomes a vehicle for audience discovery. Next we move to the 2024 Gotham Awards, which announced this week the introduction of two new categories (Best Director and the return of Breakthrough Performer) as well as the rules that come with each of them. Finally, the submissions for the International Feature Film Oscar have started to roll in with Ireland's Kneecap, Austria's The Devil's Bath and Latvia's animated film Flow as the first out of the gate. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 45m. We will be back next week on this show for our Telluride Film Festival preview and predictions and on the main show to talk about Alien: Romulus, the state of blockbusters and more. And keep your eyes out for the Thursday drops of Director Watch episodes, which kicks off its Terence Malick series this week. Till then, let's get into it. Music: “Modern Fashion” from AShamaleuvmusic (intro), “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).
For Episode 403, Nadia Dalimonte, Cody Dericks, Sara Clements & Danilo Castro, and I have much to discuss. It was a massive week in the world of awards season as we got the Opening and Closing Night film announcements for the 62nd New York Film Festival (NYFF), the entire 2024 Venice International Film Festival lineup, and a large chunk of the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) lineup including the Galas and Special Presentations, Platform, Discovery, and Midnight Madness programming. Tune in as we discuss the films that will be playing at all of them, plus what we think will be announced over the next several weeks as we head towards the fall film festivals. We also react to the trailers for "A Complete Unknown," "His Three Daughters," reveal the winners of last week's poll asking "Which Has Been Your Favorite MCU Film Post-'Avengers: Endgame'?," ask this week's poll question, "Which Films Are You Most Looking Forward To Seeing From The 2024 Venice International Film Festival?," announce the nominations for the 2010 NBP Film Community Awards, answer your fan-submitted questions and more. Your feedback and support are not just important; they are the heart of our podcast, and we're grateful for your participation. Please note that you can vote on the winners for the 2010 retrospective starting tomorrow and continuing until August 17th. Thank you, and enjoy! THE NYFF OPENING NIGHT FILM ANNOUNCEMENT - NICKEL BOYS 51:00 - Aunjanue Ellis as a Supporting Actress play, the history of previous Opening Nighters from NYFF at the Oscars, and another major contender centered on a child protagonist. (Plus, we get a quick happy story from Uncle Mike). 55:25 - OUR OUTRO and how to contact us. Plus, you hear about a handful of upcoming episodes, get some Austin Powers quotes, and a discussion on how we would do Telluride if we ever go.

Hello and welcome to the Enchanted Ears Podcast, where we discuss anything and everything Disney. Before we jump into the main topic, it's time for a little Disney News! The 100th celebration for the Walt Disney Company at Disneyland will kick off January 27th, 2023! So many exciting things are happening like the opening of Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Rail, the debut of M&M's new platinum outfits, World of Color 1 and Wonderous Journeys will debut, and more! The talk is Marvel plans on doing more “Special Presentations” instead of series. We've chosen the best soundtracks, the best Disney songs ever, and best hero songs, but with Halloween fast-approaching, we'd like to get a little dark and pay homage to the villains who highlight just how good our good guys are and maybe even haunt our nightmares at night. So which villain will reign supreme with the best villain song, one that represents their character, reveals their plan, or just shows how dastardly or downright evil they truly are? Listen in to find out. As always, thank you so much for listening! Don't forget to check us out on Facebook and Youtube or submit a question/topic for us to discuss on a future episode or support us on Patreon. Have a magical week!

However, it lost out to Labyrinth of Lies, after it was disqualified by the Academy because of its high percentage of English dialogue. It is noteworthy for its filming style, with the final cut constituted of a single continuous take.

His new film, Mountains May Depart, is centered on the theme of immigration. Before the film comes to Chinese cinemas, our reporter Doris Wang spoke to Jia Zhangke about his films and his thoughts on being a filmmaker.Mountains May Depart is the eighth and latest feature film by the critically acclaimed Chinese director Jia Zhangke. British newspaper The Guardian has called it "a mysterious and in its way staggeringly ambitious piece of work from a film-maker whose creativity is evolving before our eyes."Taking place in the 1990s, the present and in Australia in the year 2025, the film explores the complications of human relationships and the hot-button issue of immigration. According to the director, the movie is actually an exploration of how our lives have changed as a result of technological development."It reflects how new values, new technology, rapid economic development affects our emotions. For example, as the pace of our life quickens, we spend less time with our loved ones. This is something worth thinking about. In the movie, there's scene in which the mother takes the son to Shanghai and the son asks why can't they take the bullet train or the plane? The mother says the train is slower so I could spend more time with you. This shows that maybe we should be looking to the past rather than be pushed by the torrents of society."Mountains May Depart competed for the Palme d'Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival and was selected to be shown in the Special Presentations section of this year's Toronto International Film Festival. However, it's not the only film of Jia Zhangke's that has gained international recognition. In 2006, his film 'Still Life' won the Golden Lion Award for Best Film at that year's Venice Film Festival. Set in a city upstream of the massive Three Gorges Dam, the story follows two people searching for their spouses. So what was the inspiration behind the story?"In 2006, I ventured into the Three Gorges region for the first time. The construction of the dam has been going on for years. When I arrived at the site, I saw the scenes of migration, demolition and construction. I was touched by the unyielding tenacity of the people."The documentary-like movie is based on Jia's observation of the human tenacity. Like many of Jia's works, Still Life has ties to the director's home province. The main character in the movie is a coal-miner from Shanxi, in central China. In Mountains May Depart, the first part of the film takes place in Jia's hometown of Fengyang. According to him, growing up in the small town has given him a good platform from which to view China."It allowed me to understand urban culture. At the same time, I can observe people from the grassroots and their living situations. This played an important role in developing my emotional world. I feel that only when we have returned home can we learn how far we have traveled, how long we have left home. In Mountains May Depart, my hometown represents the realization of cultural identity."In addition to cultural identity, language and dialects also play an important role in Jia's new movie. The movie starts with the characters speaking the local Shanxi dialect, then moves on to Mandarin, and finally to English in scenes which take place in Australia. According to Jia Zhangke, local dialects add something special to his movies."The dialects in Shanxi are very ancient. Some came from the Han Dynasty. Dialects make movies more vivid. It will enable those who understand the dialect to better interpret the meaning of life and also see their life from a different perspective. Shanxi is a province that has deep-rooted Chinese traditions including local opera and literature. All this has had an impact on my growth."Mountains May Depart opens in theatres across China on October 30 and Jia Zhangke is already working on his next film. His new film is going to be a departure to his usual artistic and documentary-like style. It will be a martial arts film. Jia says becoming a good director means sometimes stepping outside your comfort zone. Here's his take on what makes a good film."Film is an art that deals with human relationships and mutual understanding. In the process, sincerity of human emotions is very important. Also, the movie needs to have an insight into human nature and society. In addition, there needs to be exploration and new discoveries of movies as a medium and language."According to Jia Zhangke, there is no difference between a commercial film and an artistic film in his mind and he is looking forward to exploring new film genres in the future. For Studio +, I'm Doris Wang.
