Send us a textDo Halloween festivities bring more joy or concern when you're living with a congenital heart defect? Ashley DeMarco shares her journey growing up with complex heart conditions, turning personal challenges into stories of resilience. Alongside her, we hear from Michael Liben, who navigates grief with humor on his podcast "Bereaved but Still Me," and Rita, who provides a multi-generational perspective on congenital heart disease (CHD) with her family's experiences. Together, we unravel the nuances of navigating health and community as young adults and parents in the CHD world, painting a picture of hope and solidarity. As we transition into the spirit of Halloween, nostalgia and safety tips blend together in our lively discussions. We reminisce about trick-or-treating in tight-knit communities, while also highlighting the essential precautions for children with heart conditions during these festivities. The contrast between past and present perceptions of safety reveals a world that's both cautious and filled with connection through shared medical experiences. Our conversation is a heartwarming reminder of the bonds formed between parents and children, especially when magic and medicine intersect. Finally, we address the often-overlooked emotional toll of compassion fatigue. With stories from heart camps and non-CHD friendships, we explore the challenges of maintaining relationships while living with ongoing health issues. Rita reflects on a memorable live show, demonstrating how our means of connecting have evolved. The conversation serves as a beacon for understanding and connection, underscoring the profound need for community support. We invite listeners to contribute their insights and stories, enriching the dialogue and reinforcing the shared journey of the CHD community.Helpful Links:The Rita, Victoria and Heidi Scoggins' episode: https://tinyurl.com/3ScogginsAmy Erhart's first Heart to Heart with Anna episode: https://www.buzzsprout.com/62761/episodes/15810923One of Michael Liben's Heart to Heart with Anna episodes: https://www.buzzsprout.com/62761/episodes/736588Compassion Fatigue Episode: https://www.buzzsprout.com/62761/episodes/736588Thanks to our newest HUG Patron, Ayrton Beatty and long-standing Patrons: Laura Redfern, Pam Davis, Michael Liben, Nancy Jensen, Alicia Lynch, Deena Barber, Carlee McGuire, Carter & Faye Mayberry, and Frank Jaworski. Living with Alzheimer's can be challenging, but lifestyle changes play a crucial role in maintaining cognitive health. Regular physical exercise, a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids, staying mentally active through puzzles or learning new skills, socializing, and managing stress can all help preserve cognitive function. These changes may not stop the progression of Alzheimer's, but they can significantly improve quality of life and potentially delay symptoms. About Our Guest Alzheimer's is scary. But you can still find ways to be you after the diagnosis. Rebecca Chopp never expected a routine annual checkup to uncover symptoms that ultimately revealed she has early-stage Alzheimer's disease. The news was devastating. After recovering from the shock and grappling with the changes Alzheimer's meant for her life plans, Rebecca knew the next steps: retire from her stressful job leading the University of Denver, hold on to the core of herself for as long as possible, and find ways each day to live well so that her remaining time with her family and friends can be as rich and meaningful as possible. This honest and hope-filled book--Still Me--chronicles Rebecca's efforts, with the help of her family, friends, and medical team, to reshape her life for a healthy and vibrant approach to living with Alzheimer's, showing that an illness does not define us. Legacy is defined as the long-lasting impact of particular events or actions taking place in the past or in a person's life. I have been thinking a lot about that word recently. On December 5th, we had the first Andy Larson Memorial Concert. Our featured artist, Will Liverman, along with his accompanist, Jonathan King, gave us an amazing night that will never be forgotten. A tradition has been started that will honor not only Andy's legacy but that of so many children whose lives were cut short. Today's guest, Jackie, thinks a lot about her family's legacy as well. Before she was born, her family suffered from epilepsy. Although many members of Jackie's family had seizures, no one had ever died from them and I doubt Jackie even thought that was possible until the day she lost her oldest son, Jimmy. She worried then, that the doctors were missing something and that Chrissy might die as well. 3 years later, Chrissy did die, only 8 months after giving birth to her second daughter. In a sad twist of fate, 10 months after Chrissy died, Jackie's 75-year-old mother was rushed into the ICU with a heart condition. Doctors explained to Jackie and her family that her mother had long QT syndrome, an electrical abnormality in the heart that can result in fainting, drowning, seizures, or sudden death. A light bulb went off in Jackie's head. Jimmy and Chrissy died from long QT syndrome, not epilepsy. Every member of Jackie's family who had seizures had long QT syndrome as their cause. The discovery was too late for Jimmy and Chrissy, but it has saved so many others in the family. After losing both of her children, Jackie knew that she was now living her life for all three of them. She needed to help create their legacy. Over the past 20 years, Jackie has done just that. She works on the podcasts 'Bereaved, but Still Me' and 'Heart to Heart with Anna' and hopes to start her own podcast about long QT syndrome over the next few months spreading education and awareness of this treatable condition. Jackie wants her family's legacy to help prevent others from experiencing her grief and pain.

This book and movie really moved me and made me evaluate how I made decisions in my life. Was I sacrificing my happiness? Or compromising? Am I settling? Or accepting? Well listen to Catherine and I talk and differentiate between the terms and discuss how this manifested in Lou as a character. Goodreads Summary: From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Giver of Stars, discover the love story that captured over 20 million hearts in Me Before You, After You, and Still Me. They had nothing in common until love gave them everything to lose . . . Louisa Clark is an ordinary girl living an exceedingly ordinary life—steady boyfriend, close family—who has barely been farther afield than their tiny village. She takes a badly needed job working for ex–Master of the Universe Will Traynor, who is wheelchair bound after an accident. Will has always lived a huge life—big deals, extreme sports, worldwide travel—and now he's pretty sure he cannot live the way he is. Will is acerbic, moody, bossy—but Lou refuses to treat him with kid gloves, and soon his happiness means more to her than she expected. When she learns that Will has shocking plans of his own, she sets out to show him that life is still worth living. A Love Story for this generation and perfect for fans of John Green's The Fault in Our Stars, Me Before You brings to life two people who couldn't have less in common—a heartbreakingly romantic novel that asks, What do you do when making the person you love happy also means breaking your own heart?
Tenacious. When listening to today's guest, Nancy, talk about her precious daughter, Jessica, the word that immediately comes to my mind is tenacious. No matter what life threw her way, Jessica continued to fight and even thrive. Despite being born with congenital heart disease requiring multiple surgeries resulting in many complications, she just kept going. Jessica loved life and would talk and talk until she quite literally turned blue and her family would say, "Jessie, slow down a minute. You are turning blue." In the mid-1990's, as Nancy was learning more and more about congenital heart disease, she felt drawn to find other parents going through similar struggles and offer comfort and support to them. Initially, this came in the way of a listserve where people would write emails sharing their stories with each other. Through this experience, Nancy formed many friendships, including friendships with Michael (Episode 122) and Anna. In fact, Michael talks about how when his daughter, Liel, died, it was Nancy (although she lived on the other side of the world) who was able to give him comfort during those first days. Although Jessica lived until she was 22 years old, she never developed higher than the level of about an 8 year old. Today, Nancy talks about the beautiful memories that they have of Jessica and even of those last weeks of her life when they were helping her to prepare her and answer her questions about heaven. These are beautiful stories that are inspiring and heartbreaking at the same time. Nancy says that in life, Jessica would say that she always needed her mommy. Now, in death, Nancy still feels Jessica with her constantly whether it is by seeing unexpected butterflies or other little signs. Jessica always taught her in life and now Nancy is continuing Jessica's work by spreading help and healing to bereaved parents everywhere. Nancy helps in this work by being a producer (along with Anna and host, Michael) of the Bereaved, but Still Me podcast. If you didn't listen after hearing Michael, start now! It may actually mean even more now that you know of the stories of not one, but two girls whose lives inspired their parents to start a podcast.

After Eight Show - Music That You Just Don't Hear Anywhere Else!
As usual, we had masses of #NewMusic in our playlist! An eclectic mix of original, intelligent, melodic, grown-up songs - #electronic, #rnb, #jazz, #blues and #acoustic. And mostly from artists who you have not heard of - yet! Think 'next series of Jools' - that's the kind of artists that we play. Our Luvva Cover is a really dramatic reinterpretation of a massive hit song for 4 Non Blondes - Linda Perry in 1992. It's by a Youtube sensation, 16 year old Willa Amai from L.A. She has now signed to the record label co-founded by Linda Perry who, as lead singer of 4 Non Blondes, wrote and sang the song originally! Give it a listen and see which version you prefer - they are VERY different from each other. New Music You Just Don't Hear Anywhere Else! Richard Coles and Nikki Bedi are joined by Graeme Garden - one third of the Goodies along with Bill Oddie and the late Tim Brooke-Taylor. In the classic BBC television show the trio played agents for hire and would do "anything, anywhere, anytime". Astride their trusty ‘Trandem’ – a three-seater bicycle – they tackled a giant kitten, parodied westerns with a Cornish version called “Bunfight at the OK Tea Rooms” and were chased by a giant Dougal from Magic Roundabout. Graeme also created I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue, the long-running Radio 4 show on which he is still a panellist and, with producer Jon Naismith, devised the Unbelievable Truth on Radio 4. Jojo Moyes is a novelist and journalist. Her books include the bestsellers Me Before You, After You and Still Me and The Girl You Left Behind. Me Before You has now sold over 14 million copies worldwide and was adapted into a major film starring Sam Claflin and Emilia Clarke. JoJo’s latest novel, The Giver of Stars, is based on a mobile library service launched by Eleanor Roosevelt in the 1930s. The Pack Horse Library Project was an initiative in which female volunteers on horseback delivered paperbacks to families in rural Kentucky who did not have access to books. Giles Clark is a conservationist who is taking on the illegal wildlife trade and helping to build a pioneering new bear sanctuary in Laos, Southeast Asia. He'll be talking about rescuing sun and moon bears and the perils of having bears about the house. And Garry Crothers, who lost an arm in a motorbike accident, joins us to talk about his epic journey - a 4,000 mile solo voyage from the Caribbean to his home in Northern Ireland. Presenter and author Fern Britton chooses her Inheritance Tracks - Those Lazy-Hazy-Crazy Days of Summer by Nat King Cole and (You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman by Carole King. Plus a listener says thank you to a stranger who helped her at a difficult time. Producer: Paula McGinley Editor: Richard Hooper

During this show I am joined by Sue Dixon, in her own words; a cheerful, happy person, a bit forgetful but that's her age, who happens to be disabled with MS. Sue hates the winter, loves the sun, is always cold and has permanently cold hands. Sue is a blogger, she writes about various subjects which pop into her head. Sue would like to do something to help people who are lonely, isolated and have a project of their own. Children could be involved, care homes could do this without any enormous outlay or taking up too much of what is a valuable caring job. She suggests purchasing one plastic flower pot, a small bag of compost and a packet of sunflower seeds. Plant just two of them in the pot and begin a chain of kindness, gifting this onwards with the remaining packet of seeds asking the recipient to do the same for someone else on their own. You can find Sue's blogs on wordpress: https://imstillme123.com/ "I'm Still Me….. MS doesn't doesn't define me, so please don't give me a label!"

Now that Bachelor Arie found love, proposed, changed his mind, said JUST KIDDING on national television, bought a ring for number two, proposed to her (also on national television), and is off cashing in his fifteen minutes of fame, I'll be focusing on other pop culture related episodes of the podcast. I know those of you who don't watch The Bachelor are virtually high-fiving me right now! In celebration of March Madness, my roommate Lara and I discus our SLAM DUNKS of the last year when it comes to pop culture topics. We also give examples of "around the rim" and AIR BALL moments. And there's a recurring poll of "Who would you date?" The answers vary, depending on the topic, but I always lean heavy in the direction of King Arthur. I think my motives are clear. Good afternoon everyone and welcome to another edition of The Avid Reader. When last we spoke with Jojo, dear listener, it was more than five years ago and Me Before You had just come out. No thronging crowds at book signings, no billion-dollar movies with Deanery’s and Gayle, no After Me and of course no Still Me her latest and last featuring Louisa Clark. Now of course she has had three novels on the NYT best sellers list and is translated into hundreds of languages. I am amazed that she’ll still talk to me—although I was amazed five years ago. For those of you living in some other universe, Jojo has written, in addition to the Louisa trilogy, Paris for One, The Horse Dancer, The Last Letter from Your Lover One plus One and other great books. A total of I think 11 or so. And is now working on scripts and screenplays for new movies based these titles. In Still Me Louisa has left Ambulance Sam for the moment, or is it just a moment, and ventured to America, to New York City and once again is a caretaker of sorts, this time for the Gopniks and specifically for the super wealthy, super beautiful, super enigmatic Agnes. Nathan got her the job. Along the way she meets a new guy, Josh, who looks a lot like Will but doesn’t necessarily act like him. And Ms. DeWitt, and Ashok and Garry and a bunch more characters as thoroughly and enjoyably drawn as Jojo has in her other books. I’ve lived in New York, I still go there three or four times a year, and after a week or two of research in the city, Jojo seems to know as much about this unique city as I do. In any event, as a conclusion to a remarkable trilogy Still Me does not disappoint and it reminds us of what a wonderful, quirky and really good woman Louis Clark is. With that, welcome Jojo and thanks for coming by again to talk to us after all this time.
