I was not familiar at all with China's national college exam, the gaokao, until reading about it in Susan Blum's book, Schoolishness, and talking with her about it on a podcast episode we released in August – episode 152, you should check it out – and I'm incredibly grateful to Susan for making the connection with my guest today. Zachary Howlett is associate professor of Anthropology at the National University of Singapore, joining me from Singapore, and author of the book, Meritocracy and Its Discontents: Anxiety and the National College Exam in China. I thought at first ah, sure, every country has its school gatekeepers and methods of rationing secondary & post-secondary education – the SAT & ACT in the US, or the GCSE's in the UK, for example – so how is this any different? But what I was not prepared for in Zachary's work was the sheer magnitude of the gaokao as a deeply Chinese cultural, economic, political, and even a magical and religious phenomenon that touches every aspect of life, and for which there really is no American equivalent. The blurb on the back of the book from Karrie Koesel captures it so well, “Zachary M Howlett opens the black box of the gaokao to reveal that it is not only a fateful rite of passage, but also a complex social phenomenon laid in with ritual, magic, dark horses, examination champions, latent, potential, luck, character building, social inequity, and the possibility of changing one's fate.”Meritocracy and its Discontents book link Hosted on Acast. Stress and trauma will always hold power over you and your overall health—unless you face the problem at the cellular level. This week, I'm joined by Dr. Susan Blum, a board-certified physician specializing in preventative medicine, functional medicine, and integrative medicine. We sat down to discuss the critical role of mitochondria on your health, the impact of environmental toxins, infections, and trauma on these cellular powerhouses, and integrative approaches to healing. In this episode, you'll discover: What Exactly Are Mitochondria: As vital organelles found in cells—most notably in the brain, muscles, and heart—mitochondria are "the little furnace inside every cell that makes your energy called ATP," describes Dr. Blum. The Link Between Trauma and Mitochondrial Health: Stress and trauma can cause the cell to enter the cell danger response, says Dr. Blum. This, in turn, damages the mitochondria by blocking their ability to function properly. This can result in brain fog, fatigue, and even chronic illness. How to Treat the Root Cause: Dr. Blum stresses the importance of “cleaning up your environment“ as your first step, which can include testing your home for health-disrupting mold or figuring out what triggers you physically and emotionally. Next steps may include going to therapy, filtering your water, and prioritizing deep, restorative sleep since "your mitochondria repair at night," says Dr. Blum. The Healing Power of Ketamine: Under the supervision of a trained professional, IV ketamine can safely take the healing process to the next level when paired with therapy. "Most people's experience is there's this deep meditation space of quiet behind their thoughts without needing to meditate almost," shares Dr. Blum. 02:13 Dr. Blum's Journey into Functional Medicine 04:06 The Impact of Trauma and Stress 17:38 The Role of Mitochondria in Health 21:26 Cell Danger Response and Healing 31:18 Introduction to Mitochondrial Damage and Testing 31:25 Understanding the MitoSwab Test 33:11 Targeted Mitochondrial Therapies 42:37 Emotional Wellness and Ketamine Therapy 56:15 Preventative Measures for Mitochondrial Health Connect with Dr. Myers: Website: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ Newsletter: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ec/guide-to-leaky-gut Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AmyMyersMD Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amymyersmd/ Connect with Dr. Blum: Website: https://blumcenterforhealth.com Emotional Wellness Program: https://blumcenterforhealth.com/emotional-wellness-program/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drsusanblum/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/blumcenterforhealth YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/drsusanblum
My guest today is Dr. Susan Blum. Susan Blum is Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Notre Dame. She is the author of I Love Learning; I Hate School and My Word!, as well as the editor of Ungrading. Her new book, Schoolishness: Alienated Education, and the Quest for Authentic, Joyful Learning is now out on Cornell University Press. It catalogs in great detail the characteristics of a “schoolish” education, that is, school as a self-contained institution with its own logic, grammar, and rules. One that, ultimately, sets students up for difficult re-entry into the rest of their lives in an unschoolish world. Susan draws upon examples of unschoolish learning from around the world and makes a powerful case for a necessary anthropological perspective that makes the familiar strange and the strange familiar.“If we don't try, nothing will change,” she writes, “It's hard. Hell, it's probably impossible. Schoolishness is probably here to stay, but maybe not all of its elements are inevitable. Entrenched, yes. But inevitable? I don't think so.”Editor's Note: Susan would like to add a quick correction that her current DuoLingo streak is over 1,100 not 11,000. :)Susan Blum's WebsiteWorks mentioned this episode:Susan Hrach - Minding Bodies: How Physical Space, Sensation, and Movement Affect LearningDavid Lancy - The Anthropology of ChildhoodEdwin Hutchins - Cognition in the Wild Hosted on Acast. The link between hormones and toxicity is an important one that is often overlooked. Hormone imbalances are becoming more and more common, and our toxic environment is one of the leading causes of these variations. It can have a wide range of symptoms, from low sex drive, to fatigue and depression. Dr. Peter Kozlowski uses a broad array of tools to find the source of the body's dysfunction: he takes the time to listen to his patients and plots their history on a timeline, considering what makes them unique and co-creating with them a truly individualized care plan. Dr. Kozlowski did his residency in Family Practice but started training in Functional Medicine as an intern. He trained in the clinics with leaders in his field, including Dr. Mark Hyman, Dr. Deepak Chopra, and Dr. Susan Blum. To identify the cause of the imbalance, a functional medicine doctor will look at five main areas: Food Gut health Mental and emotional health Toxins And hormones. Toxins are often overlooked, but they can have a major impact on hormone balance. Toxins such as heavy metals, mold, and glyphosate can be found in a variety of sources, such as fish, water, and air. These toxins accumulate in the body and disrupt the delicate balance of hormones. Mold toxicity can also cause hormonal imbalances and is often found in water-damaged buildings. Glyphosate, a chemical found in herbicides, is another common toxin and has been found in high levels in many people's bodies, even those who have been eating organic food for years. What is Functional Medicine? Functional Medicine is a medical practice that focuses on preventative care, looking at the root cause of illness and disease, and treating the body as a whole. It is a holistic approach that takes into account the patient's lifestyle, environment, and genetic predisposition. Functional medicine practitioners use advanced testing to diagnose health problems, including hormone imbalances, blood sugar issues, adrenal fatigue, and other chronic illnesses. They use a personalized approach to health, looking at the body as a whole, rather than just treating individual symptoms. One of the main goals of Functional Medicine is to identify and address the underlying causes of a patient's health issues. This may involve looking at the patient's diet, lifestyle, and environment. For example, a practitioner may examine a patient's diet to determine if there are any nutritional deficiencies or if the patient is consuming too many toxins. How to get proper detoxification? Detoxification is a process of removing these toxins from the body, and it is something that everyone should consider doing. Peter Kozlowski believes that heavy metal testing should be done as a routine pediatric visit at the age of 3 and that everyone should be tested for mold, glyphosate, and other toxins every 6 months or every year. He believes that these toxins are not only found in the environment but can also be passed to children through the umbilical cord during pregnancy. So, what is the best way to detoxify your body? According to Kozlowski, "the first step is to stop exposure to toxins, such as reducing the use of processed foods, lipsticks and mascaras, and other products that may contain toxins." Additionally, he recommends drinking half your body weight in water, exercising and sweating, using an infrared sauna, getting enough sleep, and managing stress in order to help the body detoxify. Kozlowski also recommends using the Environmental Working Group's website (ewg.org) to identify what toxins may be in your home and products you are using. Additionally, he recommends getting tested for heavy metals, mold, and glyphosate to get an accurate picture of what toxins are in the body. Finally, Kozlowski recommends searching for a certified functional medicine doctor on ifm.org to get a personalized detox plan. It is important to note that the amount of time it takes to detoxify the body will vary from person to person, and it may take up to 6 months to get the desired results. Kozlowski also recommends reading his books to be better informed and prepared for the detoxification process. In conclusion, detoxification is an important process for everyone to consider to rid their body of toxins. By following the steps outlined by Peter Koz, you can take the necessary steps to help your body detoxify and improve your overall health. In this podcast you will learn: The link between hormones and toxicity The steps you need to take to eradicate hidden toxins in the body The difference between traditional and functional medicine The key to gut health Benefits and risks of taking testosterone replacement The symptoms of having a hormonal imbalance And so much more EPISODE RESOURCES: http://doc-koz.com Facebook Instagram

Show notes: Dr. Gladden notes that listeners are going to love learning about what they can do today to balance their hormones and deal with toxicity. (1:03) Dr. Gladden welcomes Dr. Koz to the show and goes over the issues they will be touching on. (1:35) Dr. Gladden mentions that Dr. Koz has written a book called - Get the Func Out. (3:12) Dr. Koz lists out five main areas he considers when it comes to functional medicine: food, gut health, hormone imbalance, environmental toxins, and mental and emotional, and spiritual health. (4:00) Dr. Koz highlights that functional medicine's mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects seem to be the most critical aspects. (6:05) Dr. Koz points out a red flag he comes across when dealing with patient documentation. (7:55) Dr. Koz refers to going to treatment at twenty-seven or twenty-eight and not being able to name an emotion. (10:25) Dr. Koz reveals that he was very traditionally minded and never thought he would be doing functional medicine today. (12:00) Dr. Koz emphasizes that the symptoms of adrenal fatigue can look the same as the symptoms of a low thyroid, so different tests are needed. (13:55) Dr. Koz explains that the thyroid gland makes T4 and that T4 is converted to T3 and shares that T3 is the hormone that binds to cells all over your body. (16:00) Dr. Gladden mentions that the only way to deal with some issues is to do genetic testing. (18:19) Dr. Koz says an area of functional medicine he was not willing to get into originally was environmental medicine. (20:20) Dr. Koz advocates that the accumulation of toxins results in disease. (22:10) Dr. Koz explains how toxins may get stored in any cell in our body. (24:55) Dr. Koz maintains that heavy metal is the number one toxin he would test anyone for. (26:45) Dr. Koz reveals that organic products are not necessarily protected from things that are in the air. (30:09) Dr. Gladden says that those that are near highways have higher levels of exhaust fumes and toxic products in their toxic profiles. (33:05) Dr. Koz discloses that he will use different detox strategies depending on the toxin he finds. (37:10) Dr. Koz shares that his favorite detox supplement is glutathione. (39:19) Dr. Koz states that what he was taught in functional medicine was to start with the gut. (41:49) Dr. Gladden details that he was taught detoxification in phases. (43:00) Dr. Gladden lists the Dirty Dozen and how it is important to clean them before consuming. (47:00) Dr. Gladden highlights the importance of testing your environment and opening phase 3 pathways. (49:39) Dr. Koz realized that doing the gut was not enough, replacing hormones was not enough, but there were other steps that he needed to take. (51:00) Dr. Gladden expresses that he really enjoyed the conversation. (52:37) Dr. Koz ends his conversation by saying he would love for people to dig more into functional medicine's mental, emotional, and spiritual parts. (53:24) Dr. Gladden notes that what we fail to understand is that our biochemistry is mainly influenced by our mental, emotional, and spiritual state. (54:13) Dr. Koz is very confident that getting your hormones right starts with proper testing. (55:33) Steve thanks everyone for listening to the podcast. Our guest today is functional medicine practitioner Dr. Peter Kozlowski, and for those who aren't familiar with functional medicine, you're in for a real treat. Dr. Koz practices getting to the root of disease rather than treating the symptoms, while also addressing mental, emotional, and spiritual health. Doesn't that make sense? Dr. Kozlowski has authored two books: Unfunc Your Gut, in which he tackles gut health and the immune system, and his new book Get the Func Out, where he addresses detoxing from heavy metals, toxic chemicals, and mold. Before writing the books, he trained with luminaries such as Dr. Susan Blum, Dr. Mark Hyman, and Dr. Deepak Chopra. But what's also intriguing is that his path to where he is was not a straight one. Dr. Koz faced some serious adversity along the way, and we're looking forward to seeing how some of those experiences influenced how he practices medicine today! “We're all born with a bucket, and we fill that bucket with sugar and bad food and stress and lead and mercury and mold and glyphosate. That bucket eventually overflows into disease. Right? And that's where most people are presenting themselves to me - when their bucket is full. And then we're trying to figure out what's in their bucket and what's filling it." - Dr. Peter Kozlowski What we discuss in this episode: His personal story and journey to functional medicine His struggles with alcohol Hormonal imbalances, menopause, and toxins The primary toxins he sees and treats An explanation of chelation and heavy metal testing The symptoms of mold toxicity and how Dr. Koz tests for it His thoughts on supplements and emphasis on diet Resources: Website: Doc-Koz Books: Unfunc Your Gut, Get the Func Out Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/doctorkoz/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/doc_koz/ The Plant-based Playbook IS HERE! Josh Luckens interviews Dr. Susan Blum, who shares how she uses “ungrading” principles and practices to reinvigorate her role as a college professor and empower her students to be lifelong learners.Dr. Blum is a professor of anthropology at The University of Notre Dame and the author of nine books, including her 2016 publication "I Love Learning; I Hate School: An Anthropology of College,” and her 2020 instant classic “Ungrading: Why Rating Students Undermines Learning (and What to Do Instead),” which she both edited and contributed to alongside higher education experts from across the world.Ungrading is a process of pedagogical inquiry that calls conventional assessment practices into question and continually searches for instructional strategies that work better to promote deep engagement and lasting learning.Dr. Blum shares a constellation of teaching practices applicable to a variety of disciplines that de-center grading and re-center genuine feedback and student growth. In her words: “Students in my classes have shifted their focus from getting good grades to meaningful and authentic learning.”Additional resources:Transcript: View as Word Doc or PDFTLC blog post: Asking the Big Questions in Learning DesignTeaching What You Don't Know by Therese HustonCarl Wieman Science Education InitiativeSyllabus example that employs grading while integrating ungrading principles (from Professor Mark Sample of Davidson University)(August, 2022)
Alopecia The human scalp contains approximately 100,000 to 150,000 hair follicles; its easy to take hair for granted until you start to lose it. Hair loss is a complex area of health care as there are many different types including Lymphocytic driven hair loss, Neutrophilic driven hair loss, mixed forms, non-scarring hair-loss, scarring hair loss, patterned hair loss, focal hair loss, and the most common diffuse hair loss. You can see this isn't so straightforward. According to our guest Jill Grunewald, the creator of The Reversing Alopecia Roadmap ; they all share similar underpinnings and imbalances . Jill believes in addressing the gut, immune system, and hormones to reverse alopecia and she shares some of these concepts with us in our discussions. She also shares some success stories that involved the immune system, her favorite hair loss supplement, and some comments on when to use some latest hair loss technologies like microderm rollers and red light therapy helmets. About Jill: Jill McLaughlin Grunewald is a holistic nutrition and hormone coach, Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach, and founder of Healthful Elements LLC. She specializes in alopecia, Hashimoto's, adrenal dysfunction, women's health, and blood sugar imbalances and is the co-author of the #1 bestselling Essential Thyroid Cookbook: Over 100 Nourishing Recipes for Thriving with Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's. For nearly 17 years, Jill has successfully guided her clients and students to health and vitality—she has helped numerous with Hashimoto's successfully manage their condition and has helped many with alopecia reverse their devastating hair loss with her first-of-its kind, signature program for the hair loss community called The Reversing Alopecia Roadmap. Jill's own Hashimoto's has been successfully managed since late 2008 without the use of thyroid drugs. She had suffered from mild alopecia, off and on, starting at the age of 13 and then became devastatingly half bald with the alopecia ophiasis pattern in her early 40s. She refused to accept her fate and after digging into all the root causes of alopecia, grew all of her hair back. She's suffered some relatively mild setbacks in the last two years, but all of those spots have filled in or are currently in a growth phase. Jill has written for various publications, blogs, and online magazines, including Huffington Post, MindBodyGreen, Dr. Frank Lipman's BeWell blog, Dr. Susan Blum's blog, and Experience Life magazine, has contributed to articles in Self and Shape magazines, and was quoted in Oprah's O Magazine about thyroid nutrition. In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana.

In which Dan examines the behemoth that is traditional grading--you know, the A-F and 0-100 scales, and GPAs. Dan is joined by Susan Blum (@SusanDebraBlum) who has done a ton of thinking, speaking, and writing about how teachers can move away from this crude, harmful practice and towards something called ungrading. Susan edited and contributed to Ungrading: Why Rating Students Undermines Learning (and What to Do Instead). Why is thyroid disease so prevalent among midlife women? The thyroid is part of a whole picture: Can it be diagnosed and treated too soon if other things are not addressed? For instance, adrenal issues? How can it be managed? How can thyroid function be improved without medication? Let's review the difference between Western-based typical testing and functional diagnostic tests necessary to really get a picture of what's happening for someone suspected of thyroid issues. What is typically tested, what's missing, as well as how is that interpreted in a way that only addresses “norms” vs optimal levels? Typically tested and missing and why that's important? Review for listeners, many of who are becoming increasingly aware that being in the normal range is not what you want, knowing a lot of people who don't feel good make up those norms, how are optimal levels determined? (This is something we've never discussed in this way). Let's review dietary changes that will support a thyroid condition? And clarify that…. Is this supporting thyroid function in a way that can improve it? In doing so, does that mean that dietary changes could reduce the need for thyroid medicine or the amount of thyroid medication? Specifically, Ferritin levels and B12, or the importance of selenium, or disruption from sea salt. What is an adequate amount of time a woman should make consistent changes to test the effect of habits on her body before ruling it out as not working, not enough, or too much to make the next change? Dr. Susan Blum (University of Notre Dame), a Renaissance Humanist (look it up) discusses her recent book, UNGRADING: Why Rating Students Undermines Learning (and what to do instead). In this episode, Dr. Blum discusses problems associated with the long established system of grades and grading and discusses a recent movement, UNGRADING, which is a call to arms to provide learning environments that motivate student learning by changing the way students are evaluated. If you have never heard of the concept of Ungrading this interview is likely to be disturbing, raising issues about our educational system that may challenge educators who have not questioned our model of student evaluation. If you have some familiarity with Ungrading but have yet to incorporate some of these principles in your courses, we hope that this discussion might provide the support you need to dip your toes metaphorically in the “Ungrading waters”. Lastly, if you are an expert in Ungrading please sit back and enjoy the discussion. Perhaps you can pass this episode on to colleagues that might be ready to take the plunge.

Welcome to Episode 64 of the Think UDL podcast: Engaging Ungrading with Susan Blum! Susan Blum is the editor and author of several chapters of the book Ungrading: Why Rating Students Undermines Learning (and What to Do Instead). She is also Professor of Anthropology, Fellow, Kellogg Institute for International Studies, Fellow, Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies, Fellow, Institute for Educational Initiatives, Fellow, Eck Institute for Global Health all at the The University of Notre Dame. In this episode, Susan and I explore the connections between “Ungrading” and Universal Design for Learning principles, especially focussing on how “Ungrading” engages students, reduces threats and distractions (yes, grades are distractions to learning) and fosters community. Ungrading can also provide multiple options for action and expression, so we will be covering quite a number of the UDL guidelines today. At one point in our conversation, you may hear a difference in sound quality on my audio as we had to revert to our backup audio for the last half of the interview. Near the end of the episode, Susan mentions the book Minding Bodies: How Physical Space, sensation and movement affect learning by Susan Hrach, and indeed I had just interviewed Susan Hrach the day before our recorded conversation. If you would like to hear that conversation, you will find it listed just before this episode. It is Think UDL's Episode 63: Minding Bodies, Senses, and Perception with Susan Hrach. But for now, thank you for joining me for this very thoughtful conversation with Susan Blum on “ungrading.”

I've been interviewing amazing clinicians for well over a year now, and therapists often reach out to me and make suggestions about who they think is worthy of an interview. Susan Blum has been recommended more than most, and if you haven't at least heard her name mentioned alongside TMR tots & teens, I'm thinking you're probably a wee bit isolated from the general chatter of pediatric physical therapists online. The growing number of therapists that have been raving about and recommending her approach is a tiny window of insight into the power and exciting potential behind this systematic approach to treating a wide range of children (and adults) with difficulties ranging from delayed milestones to cerebral palsy and everything in between and I was not disappointed. Links to all the good stuff we talked about can be found at www.wiredondevelopment.com Enjoy!

Today I spoke with Dr. Susan Blum on her 4-component plan for healing autoimmunity. We emphasize the importance of gut health, of course, but also get into an interesting debate regarding what type of diet is best for autoimmunity. We also cover the importance of stress and toxins.

Can you tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do? You just published a book, The Immune System Recovery Plan, and you offer one approach to treating all the different illnesses that are considered autoimmune disease. How did you devise this system and how can one approach help heal so many different issues? Can you define autoimmune disease and tell us a bit about what causes it? In your new book, The Immune System Recovery Plan, you talk about four categories or pillars that influence autoimmune disease, and if handled correctly, could actually help heal your immune system. Can you tell us what they are and fill us in on why they are so important? Let's go into more detail on the 4 steps of your treatment program. First, Using Food As Medicine. We all know food is important, but can you give us specifics on how food relates specifically to autoimmune disease? Step 2 of your program is Understanding The Stress Connection. Of course we all know there is plenty of stress all around us. Can stress really trigger autoimmune disease and what can we do about it? Step 3 is Healing Your Gut. Can you elaborate on the connection between a healthy gut and a healthy immune system? Why do you think it is that people have so many gut problems now? What can we do to ensure that our gut is healthy? You call Step 4 “Supporting Your Liver”. Can you share your detox program and explain how this can help heal your immune system? Thank you for explaining your 4-Step program. Do you have any suggestions where to start? How can people contact you or get more information about your book and your program?
