My guest this week is composer and producer Dren McDonald who has done everything from experimental indie rock to video game music to string quartet chamber music to film and VR animation soundtracks. He has worked with game studios and publishers such as Valve Corporation, Ubisoft, Glu Mobile, DeNA/Hasbro, Romero Games, Zynga, Tapulous, and others, and he's been nominated for awards for his soundtrack, music and sound design work 16 times and has won 5 times. Dren also created music and audio designs for AR and VR experiences at Facebook, and taught at University of California, Santa Cruz and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He has released several original game soundtrack releases on Nerdtracks Recordings, as well as instrumental recordings for Appearing Records. During the interview we spoke about how he got into video games, directing voice overs for games, how sound design is different for games than film, working on AR audio for Facebook, his new album built around hundreds of guitar tracks, and much more. Find out more about Dren and his new album at DrenMcDonald.com. I spoke with Dren via Zoom from his studio in the Bay area. On the intro I'll take a look at the 5 things that musicians should know about the brain, and an AI for music primer. var podscribeEmbedVars = { epId: 86177374, backgroundColor: 'white', font: undefined, fontColor: undefined, speakerFontColor: undefined, height: '600px', showEditButton: false, showSpeakers: true, showTimestamps: true };

In June 2018, we began interviewing five of the people responsible for audio in Half-Life: Alyx from Valve Corporation. The Audio in Half-Life: Alyx introduces you to each person involved in the creation of sounds in the game, and highlights their individual roles for bringing the game to life. Mike Morasky wrote the music for Half-Life: Alyx. Roland Shaw made audio for the creatures and monsters, and for all of the physics objects like matchboxes and lockers and footsteps. Dave Feise did the ambiences, UI sounds, and some of the tools like the Combine fabricator and the hacking puzzles. Emily Ridgway wrote and processed the dialog from the Combine soldiers, and designed the speakers that float alongside a player's ears on Valve's VR Index headset. Lakulish Antani co-invented Steam Audio, a tool for game developers to make environments and the objects in them react with realistic sound. All of the source audio for this documentary is available to patrons of Level with Emily. The source audio includes seven interviews with Mike Morasky, four interviews with Roland Shaw, four interviews with Dave Feise, three interviews with Emily Ridgway and three interviews with Lakulish Antani. Level with Emily Reese would like to thank Mike Morasky for this incredible opportunity and experience, and to Lakulish Antani, Dave Feise, Emily Ridgway, and Roland Shaw for the conversations, and to Valve for allowing it all to happen. Thank you to Nick Marinelli for transcription, to Nick and Chase Bethea for their feedback, and to producer Sam Keenan. With the official Epic vs Apple court fight (at least) 3 months away, the parties continue the unheralded and resource-intensive process of pulling thousands of documents together from all corners of the globe. And one of those corners? Bellvue, Washington, home of the little PC company that could, Valve Corporation. But what's Valve got to do with it? Quite a lot actually. Let's jump in. We continue on today with part 2 in our multi-episode history of the Valve Corporation! After the release their first game Half-Life went so well, they figured "How hard can outdoing ourselves be?" Well, 5 years, millions of dollars, one huge security breach, and a few lawsuits later, they would come to regret asking that question. It's time for more Valve crunch, and for Gabe to let off a little steam.
Today we answer the age old question of what happens when two extremely talented millionaire programmers gain access to a cutting edge engine and a team of creative geniuses. It's the perfect storm of privilege, timing, and know how. Join us for our new multi part series as we take a whack at the history of one of gaming's giants, the infamous Valve Corporation. In part 1, we discuses the beginnings of the company and the development of it's debut game Half-Life. A game so great that even John Carmack can't deny it.
Will be glad to hear that he will be speaking at our next meetup, so if you can make it, please join us in the vaults at Dogpatch Labs on the 22nd of January 2020.https://www.meetup.com/3D-Meetup-Dublin/events/267776272/ The Abyss: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_AbyssIndustrial Light & Magic | VFX and Animation Studio: https://www.ilm.com/The Mask (1994 film): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mask_(1994_film)Jurassic Park (film): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jurassic_Park_(film)Alias Systems Corporation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alias_Systems_CorporationWavefront Technologies: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wavefront_TechnologiesUniversal Studios Florida: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Studios_FloridaThunder in Paradise: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunder_in_ParadisePixar Animation Studios: https://www.pixar.com/Toy Story: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toy_StoryJohn Lasseter: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_LasseterA Bug's Life: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Bug%27s_LifeGeri's Game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IYRC7g2ICgEdwin Catmull: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwin_CatmullSteve Jobs: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_JobsCatmull–Clark subdivision surface: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catmull%E2%80%93Clark_subdivision_surfaceFinding Nemo: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finding_NemoBrave (2012 film): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brave_(2012_film)Valve Corporation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valve_CorporationPresto (animation software): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presto_(animation_software)Ratatouille (film): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ratatouille_(film)Alfredo Linguini: https://disney.fandom.com/wiki/Alfredo_LinguiniSIGGRAPH: https://www.siggraph.org/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

We continue to dive into fellow Philadelphia podcasts and podcasters as we celebrate the upcoming 6th annual Philadelphia Podcast Festival! We welcome Jim Lloyd, from We Like DOTA, to the show and festival for the first time! After a brief discussion on parenting, Jim explains what DOTA is to Kev. Kev barely grasps on to the notion. ABOUT 'WE LIKE DOTA' We Like Dota is a podcast about the casual Dota 2 scene, with segments such as the Hero and Item of the Week, E-Sports coverage, and Noobs Ask Noobs questions. ABOUT 'DOTA' & 'DOTA 2' Defense of the Ancients (DotA) is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) mod for the video game Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and its expansion, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. The objective of the game is for each team to destroy their opponents' Ancient, a heavily guarded structure at the opposing corner of the map, which is based on the "Aeon of Strife" map for StarCraft. Players use powerful units known as heroes and are assisted by allied teammates and AI-controlled fighters. As in role-playing games, players level up their heroes and use gold to buy equipment during the mission. Dota 2 is a free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) video game developed and published by Valve Corporation. Dota 2 is played in matches between two teams of five players, with each team occupying and defending their own separate base on the map. Each of the ten players independently controls a powerful character, known as a "hero", who all have unique abilities and differing styles of play. During a match, players collect experience points and items for their heroes to successfully battle the opposing team's heroes in player versus player combat. A team wins by being the first to destroy a large structure located in the opposing team's base, called the "Ancient". This two-video series explores how the scoring to the video game Portal 2, published by Valve Corporation, not only helps tell the game’s story, but also comments on the game developers’ philosophy of puzzle design. The first video explores how the game’s title theme 9999999, including its texture, voice leadings, and chord qualities, musically enacts dual aspects of the character of the game’s central antagonist GlaDOS: once human, her personality was uploaded into a computer mainframe where she has become a sociopathic, homicidal artificial intelligence who takes delight in subjecting humans to hazardous scientific experimentation. The second video demonstrates that 9999999 serves as the theme for a set of double variations in the game’s middle act. Since Valve’s philosophy of player training centers on iterative puzzle-design that systematically increase in complexity, and the musical accompaniments for these puzzles feature coordinated developments in musical complexity, the scoring here lets us parse the puzzle design into a kind of set of gameplay theme-and-variations.
