Continuing with our series on women in the literary arts, today's guest is Mary H.K. Choi, a Korean-American New York Times best-selling author. Mary has written three young adult novels and has been published in The Atlantic, New York Times, and GQ. Her latest book, Yolk, is the story of two estranged sisters who slowly heal their relationship after one of them is diagnosed with cancer. In our wide-ranging conversation today, we talk about Mary's journey to becoming a writer and some of the beliefs she had to let go of to get to where she is. We then dive into Yolk, where Mary talks about the similarities between her and one of the main characters, Jane. Mary unpacks why it was important for her to write about an eating disorder and having a fraught relationship with your body. Not only does this reflect Mary's personal experience, but it also comments on the broader pressures within east Asian communities regarding physical appearance. We also touch on intergenerational trauma and why Mary thinks it's an inevitable outcome of the immigrant experience, race, and the power of sibling hood as an immigrant. To hear all this and more, tune in today!• Hear what Mary was like as a little girl and her naturally inquisitive, scrappy nature. • When Mary realized that she wanted to be a writer and the pain that came with this realization. • The difficulty Mary faced trying to break into mainstream media. • For many years, Mary waited for permission, or for a break based on her merit. • A synopsis of Mary's latest book, Yolk, and the similarities between her and the main character, Jane. • The struggles Mary has had with eating disorders throughout her life. • Why it was so important for Mary to talk about bulimia in her book. • How Jane's low self-worth and insecurity reflect what happens to many women of color. • The different yolk signifiers and why Mary chose this as the name of the book. • Why Mary chose to explore sisterhood in Yolk, despite not having sisters herself. • Mary's fraught relationship with America and how she thinks about her identity. • Having a brother gave Mary someone to talk to about their unique immigrant experience. • Representations of East Asian men in the media and how this differs from representations of East Asian women. • How Mary chose to bring up the issue of race in a non-prescriptive way. • What Mary has learned from her characters about what it means to break free.ReferencesMary H.K. Slideshow for this message is available Introduction As a society we disagree. With so many people, so many backgrounds, perspectives, religions, this disagreement is inevitable. Now, resolving factual disputes, in theory, should be relatively easy: find a group of experts to collect the data and ask them to lay out the conclusions. This approach works fabulously when the issue at stake is the atomic weight of helium. We hear the expert opinion and we have no reason to question it. It's settled. But what if those FACTS have implications? As humans we are programmed, maybe even hard-wired, to dismiss FACTS that don't align with our worldview. We have this built in tendency to interpret, favor, selectively recall certain information that confirms our prior beliefs or values. This tendency is strongest when we are dealing with highly emotionally charged issues or deeply entrenched beliefs. Social scientists call this MOTIVATED REASONING. We are all motivated to look at data a certain way based on your preconceptions. Take a hot topic issue. Are we all being objective with the data? What does the data say about climate change, or gun control or vaccination or the safety of nuclear energy or genetically modified foods? I'm sure you have an opinion on that. We are all biased. We are all victims of our own MOTIVATED REASONING. According to studies done on this subject, this MOTIVATED REASONING has nothing to do with the level of education a person has, the family they grew up in, the type of culture in which a person lives. None of us are immune to this. Now today we get to John chapter 11. This is the story of the raising of Lazarus from the dead. This is one of the only examples we have in the Bible of Jesus intentionally making a miracle more dramatic. What Jesus is doing is graciously creating a situation in which even those who are heavily biased by motivated reasoning will have to confess the truth. He's trying to establish the FACTS of who he is so dramatically, so indisputably, so incontestably, so undeniably, so indubitably that his opponents will have no choice. Some will believe. But we will also see some, astoundingly, harden themselves further in unbelief. Now before we get too judgmental, let me assure you, all of us in the room are approaching the text this morning with MOTIVATED REASONING. Jesus will tell is things we don't want to hear and we are hard-wired to go to great lengths to explain those things away, to find alternate explanations, to rationalize, to justify and to excuse ourselves from the implications. So as we begin would you just ask the Lord to remove that from you right now. “Lord, would you allow the truth to penetrate my heart regardless of the implications and protect me from my motivated reasoning.” Overview We are in John chapter 11 and we are at a bit of a turning point in the book so we would do well to take a moment to get our bearings. Chapter 11 and the story of the raising of Lazarus occurs sometime between September and April. We know that because of two time markers we have been given in John 10 and 12. This is a calendar of the Jewish feast and how the Jewish calendar overlays on top of our Gregorian calendar. If you remember in John chapter 8-9 it was the feast of tabernacles. That's here in September/October. In John 10 we are told it is the feast of dedication (Hannakah) which is here in December and in John 12 we are told it's passover. And this is Jesus' last passover. So today we enter John chapter 11, which means we are somewhere in between those two which means we are approaching the final months of Jesus' ministry. Think about where we are in the book. We are just a little over half way. That tells you something about the emphasis doesn't it? The gospels are essentially four biographies of the Life of Jesus of Nazareth but they are oddly heavily lopsided in their content. If you were to count the number of chapters in Mt-Jn you'd have 89 chapters. 85 of those chapters focus on the last 3 1/2 years of Jesus ministry. Of those 85 chapters 27 of them deal with the last 8 days of his life. Why? Because you give space for that which you want to emphasize. The focus of Jesus life is his death. Because it is through his death that we achieve atonement, redemption, forgiveness of sins, resurrection and life. That becomes the entire focus of the epistles that follow. So we are roughly halfway through the book of John and John will spend as much time on these last 8 days of Jesus life as he does on the previous 33 years of Jesus life. Now there are events which really set the stage for these last eight days and John 11 is one of the most significant. Now to understand it, let's pick it up where we left off last week. Remember from John chapter 10, Jesus preaches the sermon on the good shepherd. The Jews say, tell us plainly who you are and Jesus says, "I and the Father are one." The Jews pick up stones to stone him. I want to focus for just a moment on the geography and strategy behind that move for just a moment. Let's ask the question, why does Jesus make this move to the area across the Jordan. Answer: this is almost certainly a political move on the part of Jesus. The emperor in Rome at this time is Tiberius. And the way Roman emperors ruled their empire is to appoint prefects over the various districts of the Roman empire. So the area we call Israel was broken up into these various regions. Here's a map that demonstrates that. In John 10 Jesus is in the city of Jerusalem celebrating the feast of dedication at the temple. Jerusalem was part of the region of Judea and this whole area was under the governing jurisdiction of Pontius Pilate who of course features heavily in the chapters to come. After the Jews pick up stones, Jesus flees and heads East to Perea. This area along with Judea were under the Jurisdiction of Herod Antipas. To go from Jerusalem to Perea is not very far, maybe something like 15-20 miles. Why would Jesus do this? You have to understand Pilate's situation. Pilate at this time, was a bit of a crippled ruler. Early on in his reign he was very powerful. He ruled with significant authority. He had a protector in Rome named Seganus who funded and protected him. But a couple things happened that changed that. First, Segenus his protector was executed for sedition. And then Pilate did a few things that upset the Jews and Rome sided with the Jews. So Pilate got in trouble and he no longer had a defender. Pilate was in the dog house with Rome and the Jews knew it. He couldn't muscle his way around among the Jews. The Jews had leverage on him and could get him to do their bidding. And the overwhelming evidence of this in the NT is the crucifixion. Just a cursory reading of the text shows that Pilate doesn't want to crucify this guy but the Jews force his hand. So Jesus flees from the area of Judea where Pilate is ruling because the Jews have all sorts of power there. He crosses over the Jordan river and ministers in Perea where Herod Antipas is ruling. Now let's talk about Herod Antipas. This is a different Herod by the way, than Herod you read about in nativity story. Herod Antipas and Tiberius (who, remember, was the emperor) were childhood friends. He's got all sorts of protection from Rome. In addition to that, Herod Antipas is ruling a largely gentile area. The Jews don't factor into the politics of this area. The Jews have no power over Herod Antipas. So Jesus flees to this area to escape the Jews and particularly to escape the political power the Jewish leaders enjoy in this area over Pontius Pilate. So he's going to be in Perea for 2-3 months. Now only Luke records this part of Jesus' ministry. And there's one very significant interchange that Jesus has that is going to be very helpful both in illustrating this political dynamic but also in setting us up for John chapter 11 and the raising of Lazarus. Now you have Pharisees coming to Jesus and warning him that Herod wants to kill him. Now right there, just that in and of itself, ought to be a red flag. Didn't the Pharisees, just a chapter earlier want him dead? Something doesn't seem right. Something's afoot. I'm pretty sure the Pharisee isn't motivated by his affectionate desire for the wellfare of Jesus. And almost certainly this is a ploy. Herod doesn't care about Jesus. Herod Antipas probably barely knows who Jesus is. He hasn't stirred up any trouble in his domain. So when the Jews say, “Herod wants to kill you.” Jesus knows it's a trap. The Pharisees are trying to push him out of the territory of Herod Antipas and move him into the territory of Pilate where they have control. That's what's going on. Now Jesus knows that and so he responds. 32 And he said to them, Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I finish my course. 33 Nevertheless, I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day following, for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.' He's saying, my time has not yet come. It's really kind of dark humor. He responds, “You guys are coming from Jerusalem, the city that always kills the prophets. Remember Jeremiah? remember Micah? Prophets have to die in Jerusalem, so until I go there I'm safe.” If you wanted to make an analogy you might say, “Surfers don't have to worry about being eaten by sharks unless their surfing in shark infested waters and prophets don't have to worry about dying unless they are in Jerusalem.” Do, you realize the Jews of Jesus' day would actually build tombs for the prophets. They didn't pretend that the bodies were there, but they wanted a place to put wreaths and garlands as if to say, “We are so embarrassed that our forefathers killed the prophets who wrote our Bible.” And of course we would never do that. In another place Jesus is going to say, “You build tombs to the prophets, but you are going to bring the blood of Abel to Zechariah upon yourselves.” All those prophets spoke of Jesus, and they are trying to kill Jesus! And then you have this lament. 34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! Behold, your house is forsaken. Jesus isn't in Jerusalem. But he's mourning their hardened hearts. And then he says this marvelous, prophetic WORD. And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!'" What does that mean? Jesus, right here is quoting Psalm 118. Psalm 118 is a Messianic Psalm. This is the Psalmist giving God's people instruction on how they are to receive their Messiah. It's almost like the Psalmist is giving them a future hymn book. When Messiah comes, you sing this Psalm. Who hasn't woken up and said, “This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Yeah, that's true. But that's not what this Psalm is talking about. It's talking about the day that Messiah comes. And when that day comes, you should all cry out, “Hossana” which means save us. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. That's how you welcome Messiah. And so what Jesus is saying to the Pharisees is this: the next time you see me will be when all of the inhabitants of Jerusalem spill out of the city and lay down their garments and palm branches and WELCOME ME AS MESSIAH, "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord." The whole city is going to welcome me as KING. Now, here's the point, if you were to have been there when Jesus said those words, you would have said, “That's impossible. By this time it was public knowledge, The Pharisees hate Jesus. The Pharisees and Saducees control that entire hill. They control the temple. The disciples of Jesus are convinced that a journey to Jerusalem is the same thing as a journey to the grave.” How in the world, Jesus, are you going to OPENLY walk into Jerusalem with the crowds welcoming you as Messiah, when you know good and well that the Pharisees and Sadducees are BENT on destroying you? Well the answer in part the raising of Lazarus. And you want to talk about MOTIVATED REASONING? This is a text book example. Now let's regain our bearings. Jesus has crossed over the Jordan and has had this entire exchange with the Pharisees in the relative safety of Herod Antipas. But now Jesus gets word that Lazarus is sick. Jesus is good friends with Lazarus. Lazarus lives in Bethany. Where is Bethany? Bethany is only about a mile from Jerusalem so Jesus would have likely stayed here when he was in the city for Feasts. But notice the region in which Bethany lies. Bethany is right here, back in the region of Judea, right where the Pharisees want him (back in the jurisdiction of Pontius Pilate where they have control). So this is a dangerous mission. Jesus, come back to the area where you were just about stoned to death. As we continue through the text you can detect the disciples resistance to the suggestion that they should go back up to Judea. As a side note, it's very interesting that John distinguishes which Mary he's referencing. Mary, the one who annointed Jesus feet with oil and washed it with her hair. Why is that interesting? Because he hasn't yet told the story yet about Mary anointing Jesus feet with oil. That's coming later in chapter 12. This is a pretty good evidence that John assumes you've got the other gospels in your hand. Remember John wrote his gospel last. What he's doing is assuming that you as the reader know the story as told by Matthew, Mark and Luke and since we've been introduced to more than one Mary in the synoptic gospels, he's clarifying which one he's referencing. At any rate, Jesus gets word that his friend Lazarus is very ill. Now notice the careful wording of Jesus. This is an illness that does not lead to death. He doesn't say, Lazarus will not die. He says it's an illness that doesn't culminate, terminate in death. Instead it's a sickness that leads to the glory of God. Now let's get very specific as to what is meant by that. God's doesn't receive glory from the fact that illness exists. Illness is not part of the original design. God did not look at illness in the garden and pronounce it good. Death is the consequence of sin. But, this disease and its associated suffering will be the mechanism through which God's glory over illness is displayed. In the end, the illness DOES not win. The illness lead to death. In the LONG VIEW, this illness actually leads to resurrection life. And it's at that moment that God's glory is revealed. Now at this point, the disciples understand PRECISELY ZERO of what Jesus means by this. Here's almost certainly what is going through the disciples minds. They get word that Lazarus is sick and Jesus, using his divine insight responds to the messenger, this is not a sickness that leads to death and he sends the messenger away. Sweet! Instead this is an illness that leads to the glory of God. Great! He's going to get healed like many of the others that Jesus healed. There are multiple examples in the Scripture where Jesus heals from afar with a mere word. I'm certain that's what the disciples thought. I'm certain that's what the messenger who returned thought. I'm sure the disciples thought, it will be interesting to hear the rest of the story next time we meet up and see Lazarus. I'm sure everyone mentally checked the time and said, “Okay's about noon on Thursday and Lazarus will say, ‘yeah, right about noon on Thursday I just instantly started feeling better.'” And everyone forgets about it. Jesus announces no further intention. But, we as readers get special insight into his plan. But our special insight is shocking! Did you hear that? Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. Let's zoom in on that word for love. As you know, there are several words for love for love in Greek and this is the word agape. It's the highest form of love. It's perfect, unconditional, pure. It most often refers to DIVINE love because only God can love with that much purity. So the text says, he LOVED these three with that kind of love. Now look at verse 6. The word so is a strong word. It means THEREFORE. Jesus LOVED these guys and on the basis of his love for them, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. Did you hear that? Because God loved them so perfectly, in a totally unconditional way, he didn't come when they called upon him in their moment of GREATEST need. This is bottomlessly instructive for us. We think it ought to read, since Jesus loved them so much, he immediately did what they asked and went to the aid of Lazarus to make sure he wouldn't die. We think that the Love of God means doing what we we want. God if you loved me you would fix this financial problem in my life. God if you REALLY loved me, you'd fix this relational problem that I am experiencing either in my marriage or with my kids, or my friends or in the church. That, Lord would be evidence of your love for me. God if you REALLY, REALLY loved me then you would get rid of this cancer or this disease or this health handicap. But actually the love of God is doing what is best for the person even if it involves our suffering. Did you catch that? God LOVES you; and so often times he will wait those two extra days. The very best thing in the world for you right now might be the delay of God. Why did he wait two additional days? When Jesus arrived on the scene Lazarus had already been dead four days so If he had set out immediately, Lazarus would have still been dead two full days. But he waited. Why? Because he wanted to establish with spectacular certainty that LAZARUS was not just mostly dead, but CERTAINLY dead. God's delays are not denials. The fact you think its a delay is an evidence of your MOTIVATED REASONING. What Mary and Martha wanted was for Jesus to swoop in and overcome sickness. What Jesus wanted was to swoop in and overcome death. Which is better? Now at this point, remember, the disciples still have no idea that this is what's going to go down. Remember, the last thing they heard was that this was not an illness that leads to death. They assumed this was a healing from afar. That was two days ago when Jesus said that. They've completely forgotten about Lazarus. They've totally learned to trust Jesus. He's not going to die. End of story. Move on with our life. But then Jesus, undoubtedly, surprises them and says. Now I'm not sure they are even making the connection at this point between Lazarus and Judea. I think because they have so completely abandoned the idea that the sickness of Lazarus was a problem that when they hear Jesus say, “Let us go to Judea” they understood him to be updating them on their itinerary. And their initial reaction was this idea is not one of your better ideas, Jesus. To our ears this would be like Jesus saying, “let us go to Kabul international airport in Afghanistan.” What's wrong with JFK or Kona? When they hear this suggestion, they get real concerned. Jesus, you know the politics over there. Last time we were there they tried to kill you. You barely escaped with your life. Are you sure, Jesus? So out of their mouths comes this complaint and Jesus' response: Now Jesus is basically forcing them to square their theology with their fear. He says, why do we work in the day instead of the night? Because in the day you can see. You don't stumble in the day. There's no fear of stumbling when there is light. The light of the world prevents you from making a wrong step. If you are with me, guess what? It's daytime. Why? because I am the light of the world. You can't make a mistake if you are following me. Keep that in mind folks. You can't make a mistake if you are obeying what Jesus tells you to do. There is no possible way to REGRET obedience. That is a perfect step made in the light. The outcome might be horrendous by any other standard, but it's not a mistake. It's not a mistep. Following Jesus means you will never stumble. And the converse is true as well. "If anyone walks in the night he stumbles, because the light of the world is not in him." If you do anything apart from Jesus, if you make decisions in life and don't include Jesus, if you ignore your conscience and push Jesus to the side, then whatever decision you make, no matter how successful it is in the eyes of the world, will result in stumbling. You can't be on the right path if the path doesn't include Jesus as Lord and savior of your life. You will CERTAINLY stumble. Listen, we are going to Judea. Yes, it is dangerous. But you won't stumble because I am the light of the world. Now he tells them what their Judean mission will be. The disciples are, at times, dense; however, this is not one of those times. Jesus had plainly told them this was not a sickness that leads to death. How else is a person supposed to interpret those words? The disciples hear Jesus say, “I'm going to go wake up Lazarus.” Again, how else are they supposed to interpret those words. Jesus, I'm sure he's tired. After all, he's had a brush with death. But you told us it wasn't a sickness leading to death. Right? I'm sure he's sleepy. Do we really need to go to Judea and risk our lives to get him out of bed? He'll wake up when he's kicked the virus and feels better. Now comes plain language. Now here's where things get chilling. I am glad for your sake that I was not there so that you might believe that I really do have power to raise people from the dead. Which means what? Which means that they currently DO NOT believe. This is basically our stopping point. The miracle itself we are going to talk about next time. But I want you to just hear what Jesus is saying. You guys have been following me around for a few years now. And you still don't really believe. And this is applicable for all of us as well. We believe in Jesus, but we don't really believe he has power over the things we are suffering RIGHT NOW. You believe. But you don't believe. Jesus says to to his disciples, you believe I can heal people. You've seen that. But do you realize who I am? Who I really am? I can raise people from the dead. I can overcome the grave. You don't yet believe that. Now as evidence that they don't belive that, look what Thomas says. So Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.” This gives you some idea of the level of danger represented in Jesus' suggestion. In the minds of the disciples, this was a suicide mission. This was Normandy. These guys know the hornets nest of Judea. Now what does Thomas mean here? This is one place in the Bible where you'd love to have some tone, inflection and intonation. Either Thomas is saying: “Jesus, I'm so committed to you, I'll gladly go to Jerusalem and die with you.” In that case it's a very commendable statement of loyalty… “Fine, if you want to go to Jersualem to try and raise Lazarus from the dead, you'll likely be having to raise more than just Lazarus. We are all dead if we go there.” In this case it's heavy sarcasm But in either case, in both cases, what is Thomas lacking? He does not believe that Jesus has power OVER death. Either we will die, Jesus will die or both. But someone is going to die. And Jesus says, “I'm glad Lazarus died, so you can believe.” He's painting them into a corner. Let's apply this. Gospel Message Let me assure you. All of us today walk into the room with motivated reasoning. None are unbiased. None are objective. None are willing to just receive truth without question. There are FACTS presented here that our conception of reality wont readily support. What is the FACT established in this passage? The FACT above every other FACT is that Jesus has power over suffering and death. The FACT is that Jesus has purposes in SUFFERING and DEATH. Jesus is LORD over it. The whole Bible is written to establish that FACT. Now that conflicts with a deeply emotional conviction that if God loves me, I will not suffer. And so when we suffer, our MOTIVATED REASONING kicks in. How can God still love me. And rather than interpreting our circumstances through the love of God we interpret the LOVE of God through our circumstances. That's motivated reasoning. If you are suffering right now, what is true of Lazarus is true of you, "your suffering is for the glory of God." But I guarantee you that if you are suffering right now you are motivated to reason differently. It doesn't feel that way. The FACT that Jesus is LORD over suffering is in conflict with your sense that if Jesus loved you, he would rescue me from suffering. This passage is teaching us to look beyond our feelings to what is true. Of course it feels that way. Of course the suffering is not fun. Suffering always hurts. For Lazarus the coughing and the vomiting and the sweating and the fever were all real. He had to endure all that. The evil of suffering had its way. If God was to exercise supremacy OVER death, then logically speaking, death and the accompanying suffering must have its way first. Perhaps the silence of God in our life is the silence of those two days. Perhaps God is waiting so that he can establish with such spectacular certainty that he is sovereign over the suffering you experience. We don't know his good purposes. But we know that they are for his glory and our good. I'm glad, for your sake, that you are suffering. Why? How can you say that? Because through the suffering you will believe. You will know who I am. There's no alternate explanation. And would you not agree, that there is no more loving thing in the world that God could possibly do for you than to help you see him more clearly. Baptism This evening, we have a baptism service. And so come out to that. Come out and watch a FUNERAL and a BIRTH. That's what baptism is. We bury the old man. This man whose MOTIVATED to reason that this world is all about me. We put that old man in the grave. And what rises is new life. New life is born. Unless a man is BORN AGAIN, he cannot enter the kingdom of heaven. If you are not a Christian and are wondering how you become one, the answer of the Scriptures, is repent and be baptized. The Bible sees these events are simultaneous. It's a physical expression of what has taken place in the heart. We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. (Rom. 6:4 ESV) Baptism is our funeral and birthday. We get a death certificate and a birth certificate on the same day. So bring a dinner to enjoy on the lawn afterwards. Bring a chair or a blanket and let's listen to the stories of life and celebrate Jesus' victory over death.

What Mary and Mary discover at the empty tomb is not just startling; it is history shaping. The resurrection of Jesus has implications for all of us: sin and death defeated, and resurrection life and power released into us as well. "Come and see," says the angel at the empty tomb. Then, "Go and tell." And as we go, we discover even more evidence that Jesus is alive.

Reading is delivered Sr Maria Rosmary Cebet PRR and meditation delivered by Sr Maria Cilinia PRR (they are from the Community of Formation House of PRR Eldoret in the Parish of Holy Spirit Langgas, Diocese of Eldoret, in Nairobi, Kenya, East Africa). Isaiah 42: 1-7; Rs Psalm 27: 1.2.3.13-14; John 12: 1-11. ENDLESS LOVE Our meditation today has the theme: Endless Love. What does an endless love mean? When Jesus was dining with his close friends, Mary, known as a sinful woman according to the Gospel of John, did something that only love can do. She took the most valuable treasure she had and used it only for the Lord Jesus Christ. A sincere and genuine love does not depend on calculations or conditions. Mary's love to Jesus was an example of endless love. What she did to Jesus was based on her love and gratitude to Him who bestowed an endless love too on her and her family. God of mercy forgave her, bringing her back from her sinful life of the past. Mary did an act of love that should not be made in public by a Jewish woman. She let her long hair loose in front of Jesus and seen by many present. She washed Jesus's feet with her tears. According to the norms of Judaism tradition, a woman on her wedding day must tie and cover her hair. So what Mary did at that moment was prohibited by law. Meanwhile, a married woman who let hair loose in public to be seen was a very bad sign. Mary's action certainly annoyed everyone around her except the Lord Jesus. But she did not care about the reactions of those people present. She just wanted to express her pure love for the Lord. In humility she bent down to anoint Jesus' feet and wiped them with her long hair. What Mary's did to Jesus actually gives us a message, namely to remind us on how many times have we shown our greatest gratitude and love to God! The perfume oil that she used to anoint Jesus, made the entire house filled with fragrance (Jn 12.3). Those present and the house itself were all made fragrant and comforted the people present in their bodies and souls. Only an endless love can do this act. This is enough to conclude that any woman and man can do the same great acts love to the Lord Jesus Christ like what Mary from Magdala did. It is not impossible for any of us to do such love in any situation and context of life. Jesus Christ always gives us an example to share an endless love. In this holy week we will find ourselves in moments of pondering and meditating His acts of love. Today we are given the image of Jesus the servant of God, who was willing to suffer like a bruised reed or a faded smoldering wick, but He would not be broken or faded away. He will still uphold the law of justice and truth on earth. His love lasts forever on this earth. Jesus will not disappear or finish just by experiencing suffering and dying. He actually goes through all this and continues to live in all of us His followers. Let's pray. In the name of the Father ... O Lord Jesus Christ, teach and strengthen us to always be able to endure the difficulties and sufferings that confront us, even when we have to sacrifice our lives. Our Father who art in heaven... In the name of the Father ... --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/media-la-porta/message

In part two of this interview, I share something that is very near and dear to me.  We discuss disordered eating and how we need to have a healthy relationship with food. We discuss the following in chronological order:Relationship with food and disordered eating. What Mary did to improve her relationship with food.Mary’s thesis on mental health and diet.Mood imbalances and depression.-------- Mary's BiographyFrom about the age of ten I became self-conscious about my body. I had two small framed skinny sisters. Compared to them I was considered to be "fat." This set off a lifetime of feast-or-famine eating disorder and an obsession with my appearance. I had serious digestive issues, food and pollen allergies, eczema, chronic systemic pain, depression, Candida, chronic fatigue, either severe constipation or diarrhea, cold sores, and several episodes of colds and bronchitis a year. These symptoms continued and worsened as I aged. Later I developed hypoglycemia, hypertension and an irregular heart. In my early twenties I developed an interest in nutrition and began to search out any information I could find about the human body and how to use food and supplements to achieve health. That was over fifty years ago. I have probably tried every conceivable diet at least once in an effort to lose weight and look like my sisters. As I aged my emphasis began to shift from an obsession about being skinny to achieving optimal health. At age seventy-eight I am still searching and learning. Due to aggressive food allergies, over the years my protocol was whittled down to gluten free grains, some green vegetables, almonds, walnuts and meat. I ate very little meat because I believed it would cause acidity setting up an environment in my body for cancer. As I made dietary and other lifestyle changes over the years my health improved but I was still plagued with allergies, digestive issues, eczema, mild depression, and systemic pain. I was on medication for hypertension and began having episodes of AFib. At the suggestion of my daughter, I began to follow the carnivore story. I believed anyone who only ate meat was insane and would end up with serious nutritional deficiencies leading to disease and death but I was desperate and ready to consider just about anything. As I listened to physicians, scientist and other nutritional specialists along with countless ordinary folks tell their story of their carnivore cure I became convinced it was worth a try. February 2, 2020 I began my carnivore journey. A little over a year later I am no longer suffering from many of the symptoms that I had lived with all of my life. Allergies are not gone but symptoms are greatly improved. I no longer suffer from eczema, hypoglycemia, hypertension, irregular heart, depression or digestive issues. I sleep well and most days have good sustained energy. Systemic pain is greatly reduced. I have lost 18 pounds and gone from a size 16 to a size 12, however losing weight is no longer on my radar. I have learned that my body will find its perfect weight as it continues to heal.Carnivore is not a cure-all but it is a powerful way to eat and live that heals the body and restores health especially when combined with other healthy lifestyle choices such as adequate hydration, managing stress, daily exercise and proper rest. If you want to get in touch with Mary, email me at hello@nutritionwithjudy.com --------CHECK OUT MY BOOK, CARNIVORE CURE: https://amzn.to/37R4lOY--------ADDITIONAL RESOURCES: 1) Nutrition with Judy BLOG: https://nutritionwithjudy.com/blog/ 2) Nutrition with Judy Resources: https://nutritionwithjudy.com/resources-------- FIND ME:

What is it that catches your eye when you are determining what to paint? Do you look for color that speaks to you, are you drawn to certain subjects or locations? Growing up in Australia, Mary Tonkin quickly became enamored with, “The bush” - a term mostly used in the English vernacular of Australia and New Zealand where it is largely synonymous with backwoods or hinterland, referring to a natural undeveloped area. Mary completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1995 and a Master of Fine Arts in 2002 at Monash University, where she has also lectured. Tonkin has held solo exhibitions in Melbourne and Sydney since 1999. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery, and internationally in New York.  It was my privilege to host Mary for a live session of our interview. It was a joy to have Mary open up about her process, what she sees when she’s out here in the bush, how she juggles life as a working mother, and so much more. I can’t wait for you to get to know Mary’s engaging story!  Brining the bush to life  When you speak with Mary, you get a quick impression that she means business when she talks about slowing down and paying attention. For Mary, phrases like stillness, being present, and “taking in” a place, aren't' strangers - they are well-known companions on her journey. While it may be challenging to have a living and constantly changing subject like the Australian bush, Mary says that the experience has been well worth it. What stands out to you when you observe Mary’s artwork? Make sure to catch images of her paintings located at the end of this post.  Learning to adapt  Working in the wilderness in many ways can prepare you for challenging situations you face later in life. Learning to prepare for variables that you can’t control is a helpful training ground for parents. Mary was kind enough to open up about her experience as a working mother trying to navigate her time in the wilderness with her responsibilities at home. At the end of the day, it all comes down to quality over quantity for Mary, she is grateful for the time in the bush that she can reserve.  Feeding your curiosity  I loved hearing from Mary about her own journey with compartmentalizing her painting life for both the good and bad, I know so many artists just like her! One big takeaway from my conversation with Mary comes down to the value of feeding your curiosity. Some of us love to explore our curiosity over conversations with friends, while others need time in solitude. What works best for you? How do you feed your curiosity and let it fuel your creativity? I want to hear from you!  Outline of This Episode [2:00] I welcome my guest, Mary Tonkin.  [3:15] How Mary got started as an artist.  [6:15] Mary describes her artwork.  [10:45] How does Mary manage the seeming complexity in her paintings?  [16:00] Mary opens up about how wildfires and COVID-19 have impacted her work. February 23, 2021Seven Last Words Series #3Looking Beyond OurselvesEpisode 44John 19:25 (NIV) 25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. What Mary experienced at the cross.Luke 2:34-35 (NLT) 34 Then Simeon blessed them, and he said to Mary, the baby’s mother, “This child is destined to cause many in Israel to fall, but he will be a joy to many others. He has been sent as a sign from God, but many will oppose him. 35 As a result, the deepest thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your very soul.”Mary’s sister was there as well. John doesn’t mention Mary’s sisters’ name, but Matthew & Mark do tell us her name. It was Salome. We learn from Salome to humbly accept rebuke and learn from it. Salome was the one that asked Jesus if her two sons (James & John) could sit on either side of him (places of prestige) when he established his kingdom. Jesus had rebuked her for that request? Well, even though she had been rebuked and perhaps a bit embarrassed she was there by his side at the cross. The main characters of this passage are Jesus, his mother Mary, and John. Take a look at the 26th verse. John 19:26-27 (NIV) 26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Dear woman, here is your son," 27 and to the disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.In these verses the 3rd word that Jesus spoke is revealed, and that word is “affection.” He expressed affection or caring for his mother. Jesus gives us a wonderful example here in this passage. In the norm we would expect him to be focused on his own suffering. There is a spiritual principle that weaves thru-out the Scripture and Paul mentions it in his letter to the church at Philippi. Philippians 2:3 (NLT) 3 Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.John's faithfulness to Jesus. Oh to be drawn closer to Jesus and to love him more and more. And to be more like Jesus so that we will not focus on ourselves, but rather we will be faithful to focus on others even as Jesus did as he hung there upon the cross. Looking beyond ourselves.

Art is important for more reasons than will ever be possible to count. From aiding cognitive development and critical thinking skills to beautifying the world we live in, art matters to us all. Today’s guest, Mary Farmer, is an internationally-recognized encaustic painter based in Asheville, North Carolina, whose work creates a portal into a timeless, transcendent state of consciousness. Interestingly, Mary’s paintings serve as a counterbalance to her firebrand spirit. Tireless in her pursuit of liberty and equity, she has put herself in harm’s way time during her lifelong fight for social justice and women’s rights. In this episode, we hear about Mary’s life, what growing up in Alabama was like, and some of the admirable work she has done establishing abortion clinics in the South. Mary then shares details about her art practice, including insights into the encaustic technique, where wax – rather than oil or water – is used to carry pigment. We find out how she came to choose this method and the different relationship she has with her work as a result. Our conversation also touches on the business side of an art career, why artists should not shy away from this, and the power of language in reframing arguments to enable change. Be sure to tune in today!   Key Points From This Episode: How Mary and her husband dealt with the shutdown and how it affected her art practice. The strength that Mary found when she was able to vocalize her sexual assault. Why Mary is such a strong advocate for school nurses and counselors. Mary’s experience of going to school in Alabama the year public schools were integrated. Why Mary had to leave Alabama as soon as she could. The contrast between Mary’s firebrand spirit and her soothing, calming art. Hear about some of the work Mary has done for women’s reproductive rights. Beautiful things that have happened in Mary’s community before and during the pandemic. What Mary’s studio practice looks like and how she structures her days and workflow. An explanation of the encaustic painting technique and how Mary discovered it. Why encaustic has taught Mary to not make assumptions and preconceived notions. The main thorn in Mary’s side as an artist – Why she hates writing artist statements. How the business side of Mary’s art practice has improved over the years. Mary’s strategies and tips for avoiding exploitation as an artist. Why having a clear business plan as an artist is so empowering. The incredible contribution that art makes to all of our lives. What Mary has gained from Asheville, a city with such a rich culture. This scarcity mindset that is so prevalent pits us all up against one another. Language matters; it is important to reframe arguments to get things done. Moving artworks is an art form in itself, so you have to find people who know what they’re doing. Continuing our conversation with Indivisible 2020 participating artists, today’s guests Mary Sherwood Brock and Joshua Wattle engage in a stimulating discussion filled with passion for the country. Show curator Karen Fiorito joins the two artists, who both have roots in Washington and have been on the frontlines for their whole lives — Mary as an activist, and Joshua as a lawyer and lobbyist for the anti-war movement. We get into what indivisibility means to our guests, where they both express the aspirational notion of it. While it is easy to dismiss aspirations, it is what keeps hope alive and gives us something worth fighting for. We hear about the work that Mary and Joshua submitted to the Indivisible exhibition and the rationale behind their creations. Participating in the exhibition aligns with much of the work that both Mary and Joshua have done in and outside of the arts, and we gain insights into their respective activism. We also talk about having hope, where Joshua references history and how America has overcome a lot worse, and why he feels confident the country will come out of this moment stronger. Mary expresses a less than optimistic outlook but still remains hopeful despite it all. The conversation also touches on the erosion of the idea of the collective, the importance of getting back to a place of civil discourse, and the sort-sightedness of American exceptionalism. This was an exciting, rich dialogue filled with many insights, so tune in today to hear more! Key Points From This Episode: The notion of indivisibility and what it means to Mary and Joshua. Joshua’s interest in his American identity and America, having grown up abroad. The pride Joshua felt when Obama was president and the strides made toward indivisibility. Mary’s experience with protesting, having been raised in a politically active home. Why Mary is so passionate about creating change locally. Mary’s motivation for participating in Indivisible 2020 and other political work she has done. Hear more about the work that Mary submitted to Indivisible. The photograph that Josh has in the show and the meaning behind it. Why Joshua feels we should have hope even though America is in a state of decline. Mary’s apprehension and feeling of nervousness around the protection of the court system. Joshua’s faith in the court system and why he feels this way. The worry Mary feels about the fact that there is not a common source of legitimate news. The deep sense of aspiration synonymous with America that Josh felt during his activist work. Viewing the current moment with an understanding of historical context. Mary’s take on the two-party system and how it makes people disillusioned with democracy. Mary Albertoli is a former clinical social worker who is on a mission to execute actionable solutions to help individuals struggling with mental health problems. She has a Degree in Social Work from Columbia University and has practiced for 12 years, specializing in counseling children, adolescents, and young adults suffering from mental illness. Even though she left the counseling profession, Mary kept up with the news and statistics in the industry. With shocking numbers of a 56% jump in suicide rates, coupled with school shootings and drug overdoses, Mary knew that something had to be done in order to help the youth population from continuing on the path of self-destruction. Having worked with both individuals and group session clients between the age of 10-24, Mary knows first hand from experience that individuals in this age group don't tend to open up a lot. A lot of youth go through mental problems, but because this isn't a popular topic in society, they end up feeling either disgraced or ashamed of these new feelings, and instead of talking things out, they instead act out. Social media in current times has only acted to catalyze the rate at which young adults experience loneliness, depression, and social anxiety. A lot of teenagers using social media end up experiencing ‘splintered identity' A phenomenon in which teenagers report feeling very good and inspired about one post and feeling the total opposite in the next post. This has made them disconnect from their true and authentic self, further isolating themselves, and going through more suffering. Handling depression when growing up. Growing up back in the day, it was very unpopular for guardians to help you through tough mental problems. A lot of these issues were merely swept under the carpet - as you're told to ‘power through the pain' This has proven to expose unhealed wounds of the past that need to be catered to. The pain that you powered through is the reason for your current suffering. And it can only be solved by having open and genuine conversations about your feelings surrounding the traumatic experience, and how it has affected you. Mary was able to handle the mental pain and depression that she suffered as a child in her adult life. Having faced the demons in her closet, Mary was inspired to help others accomplish the same. And this is the inspiration behind ‘The Shift' - A platform where individuals can connect with counselors, peers, and other individuals, to share issues they're going through without the fear of feeling judged or condemned. Mary now hopes that the platform can evolve to be a diverse tool with resources that help all demographics in working through their mental problems. In conclusion, remember to always live in the present moment, because nothing is more important than life itself. Be loving, kindful, and generous to your neighbor, especially in these fraudulent times, because we're all going through something, and the only way out, is by supporting each other. Text hello to the crisis hotline 741741 and a counselor will discreetly attend to you. Quotes “It's easy to think that you're alone in life when you're isolated, this coupled with the pandemic facto is why so many people are going through depression right now. And when humans suffer, they only isolate more.” - Mary on the quiet loop of depression “A lot of young adults are embarrassed by their mental issues because this isn't something they're accustomed to. The shift is about changing the conversation so that these individuals can know that they're not alone, and what they're going through is normal.” “The important thing to remember is that nothing is permanent, things change, and they're still changing on a daily basis. Something better will eventually come - How to cope with the current pandemic” “I love being in service to other people because it helps me discover myself even more. The mental path that I've journeyed through life is successful because I can openly share what I'm going through without feeling alone.” - Mary on why she loves volunteering” Timestamps 02:48 The shift 05:47 The effects of social media on the youth 08:19 Tools used in the shift 11:13 Finding ways to handle and release stress 13:47 How we've come to where we are 16:26 What Mary and her team are doing to help people 18:19 Mary's defining moment for creating the shift 24:17 Making the difference 25:29 How volunteering has fulfilled Mary's life 27:50 Experience working with different kids 31:26 The future of the shift Connect with Mary Albertoli Website - www.shifttheshow.com Facebook - www.facebook.com/theshiftseriesofficial/ Instagram - www.instagram.com/theshift_series/ LinkedIn - www.linkedin.com/company/theshiftseriesofficial YouTube - www.youtube.com/channel/UCVFfUOd7grD8dhdik4Sl0Wg Mentions Nadia Sarmova Adrienne Finch Maureen (Mo) Isern Kitty Overton As always, thanks a lot for being a part of the dHarmic evolution podcast, be sure to subscribe to the podcast and connect with us on social media. My guest today, Mary Hyatt, is a life and business coach. She helps her clients become awake to their feelings; aware of their thoughts, patterns, and habits; anchored in feeling confident in who they are; and aligned with identifying their voice and desires.   What I loved most about the conversation Mary and I had today were her teachings and insights around how we, as women, can harness the power of our emotions in the work that we do as parents, entrepreneurs, and go-getters in this world. Mary shows through the work that she does that we do not need to numb out, suppress, or deny our emotions in order to work harder, better, or more efficiently. The real power comes from harnessing our emotions and leveraging them in what we do.   In this episode, Mary shares her personal journey with understanding her emotions and the beautiful transformation she experienced once she understood and acknowledged her emotions and how they showed up in her body. She shares how we can tap into our emotional body, how we can understand and recognize the warning signs before getting to a place of burnout, how we can begin to cultivate self-awareness around checking in with ourselves and our emotions, and how we can learn how to become truly present and true to ourselves.   Mary's words are profound and her insight is incredible. La Porta | Renungan Harian Katolik - Daily Meditation according to Catholic Church liturgy

Reading by Felicia and meditation by Mark Jason Garcia ENDLESS LOVE Our meditation today has the theme: Endless Love. What does an endless love mean? When Jesus was dining with his close friends, Mary, known as a sinful woman according to the Gospel of John, did something that only love can do. She took the most valuable treasure she had and used it only for the Lord Jesus Christ. A sincere and genuine love does not use calculations. Mary's love to Jesus is an endless love. What she did to Jesus was based on her love and gratitude to Him who bestowed an endless too on her and her family. God of mercy forgave her, bringing her back from her sinful life in the past. Mary did an act of love that should not be made in public by a Jewish woman. She let her long hair loose in front of Jesus and seen by many present. She washed Jesus's feet with her tears. According to the customary rules, a woman on her wedding day must tie and cover her hair. What Mary's did to Jesus did leave us a message, namely to remind us on how many times have we shown our greatest form of gratitude and love to God! The perfume oil that she used to anoint Jesus, made the entire house filled with fragrance (Jn 12.3). Those present and the house itself were all made fragrant and pleased both physically and spiritually. Only an endless love can do this act. This is enough to illustrate that any woman and man can do some great acts love to the Lord Jesus Christ like what Mary from Magdala did. It is not impossible for any of us to do such love in any situation and context. Jesus will not disappear or finish just by undergoing suffering and dying.

“Revolutionary Words”12/15/19Luke 1:46-56Core Belief: Authority of the Bible I believe the Bible is the Word of God and has the right to command my belief and action.2 Timothy 3:16-17 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.Scripture: Luke 1:46-5646 And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,48 for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; 49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.50 And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. 51 He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; 52he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; 53he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, 55as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever.” 56 And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home. The Message of this Passage:From the Communicator’s Commentary: “Mary’s hymn of response to the angel is the famous Magnificat, so named by the Roman church for the key word in the Latin translation of the first line of this prayer of praise offered by Mary.Mary, in her naturalness, unself-consciousness and humility, was now able to sing about how proud she was that God had chosen her. In her true humility, she praised God that she was especially blessed. There is a danger in trying to spiritualize the Magnificat. These are the most revolutionary words ever spoken.Through the Messiah, the mighty will be brought low; the humble, the lowly, will be exalted.William Temple, Archbishop of Canterbury, warned his missionaries to India never to read the Magnificat in public. Christians were already suspect in that country and they were cautioned against reading verses so inflammatory.Jesus, the ultimate revolutionary, completely reverses all human values. What Mary was prophesying about her unborn son is terrifying to the establishment, whoever and wherever they are. They cannot hear these words gladly. We may attempt instead to spiritualize these verses, but deep down we all know that Jesus has come to instigate the kind of revolution we need.Henry James, great novelist of the past, said in Ivan Turgenieff, ‘Life is, in fact, a battle. Evil is insolent and strong; beauty enchanting but rare; goodness very apt to be weak; folly very apt to be defiant; wickedness to carry the day; imbeciles to be in great places; people of sense in small (a comforting thought); and mankind generally unhappy, but the world as it stands is no illusion, no fanaticism, no evil dream of the night; we wake up to it again forever and ever; we can neither forget it nor deny it nor dispense with it; that’s what the world is.’José Ortega y Gasset, one of the greatest of all Spanish writers, said, ‘Before long there will be heard throughout the planet a formidable cry rising like the howling of innumerable dogs to the stars asking for someone or something to take command.’ And that’s why Jesus has come—to take command to lead the revolution, an incredible revolution, unlike Mao’s or Marx’s or Castro’s; a revolution of love.”I was interviewed once by a reporter who had covered Mother Teresa’s visit to Boys Town. I asked him about that visit and her reactions. He said, “They showed her all over the grounds of Boys Town, the dormitories, the classrooms, the gymnasium, the dining hall. At the end of the tour, she turned to the head priest and said, ‘You have all this, but do you really love them?’ Jesus loves us. This is the strategy of this ultimate social revolutionary. And God of the impossible is leading His people in this revolution.Answering Interpretive Questions:Why was it important that Mary was a humble person? What if she had been proud? Could God have used her in the same way? Why or why not? What does Mary do which proves to us she believed what the Angel of the Lord told her?Name some of the things Mary said about God in these words of praise:1.2.3.4.5.6.According to verses 50-53 how does God deal with those who fear him, the humble, and the hungry? In contrast, how does he deal with those who are proud, the rulers, the rich? How does reflecting on God’s attributes affect the way you worship?Someone has said, “You can be too big for God to use, but you can never be too small? How does that square with the teaching of this text? What are some of the telltale signs that we are too proud for him to use?The proof of belief is what you do, not just what you feel. What will you do today as a result of what you have learned in this passage?NOTES:

Pastor Daniel Simmons preaching from Luke 1:26-38 where he described how God became a man through Mary. The Greatest Announcement Ever Made Luke 1:26-38 Exegetical Main Point: The Angel Gabriel announces thatthe virginMary will give birthby the power of the Holy Spiritto a son who will be a King. He will be named Jesus, and will be called the Son of the Most High. Mary's belief in her identity as God's servant informs her humble submission to the Lord. Main Point of the Sermon: True belief in God must lead to surrender. Introduction: I have to admit that I have been caught off guard by the Lord’s commands at times in my life. It’s like I have no problem accepting them until the moment that I realize just what that means for my day. “Wait, you want me to give up what? This was true for me in my early twenties, when God awakened me to the ways that I had put my music career before his Lordship. There’s a lot to the story, but what became clear to me at that point was that following Christ meant surrendering the wheel of my life to him from that point on. You see, God’s call to follow him often comes with the need to lay something down that is very dear to us. Have you experienced this? It doesn’t always make sense, does it? “Move where, do what?” Sometimes it even seems impossible, so unnatural! But in reality, if it doesn’t cost us, then we are probably not actually surrendering anything at all. As you immerse yourself in the story of God, it becomes clear that humble submission and surrender to God characterize the Christian because it characterized Christ our King. In causing Christ’s life to be born in you, God expects the death of self. In other words, we must be willing to carry our own cross, even daily. We will see an example of this today in the life of the virgin Mary. But before we look at Mary’s surrender, we need to get a glimpse of the greatness of the king. Outline: The Greatest Announcement Ever Made vv. 26-37 Mary’s Belief Lead to Surrender vv. 38 The Christian’s Belief Must Lead to Surrender The Greatest Announcement ever made vv. 26-33 Luke tells us that the same angel, Gabriel, who was sent to Zechariah six months earlier, “was sent to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary” (vv. 26-27). Luke’s Comparison I want you to notice the similarities of this story to last week’s prophecy of John’s birth because Luke seems to be up to something in the progression and details of the story. In fact, chapter 1:5 all the way to 2:52 make up what Bible scholars call the infancy narrative. Slide: John’s birth prophesied, Jesus’s birth prophesied > the meeting of the two mothers > John’s birth > Jesus’s birth > In this set up, it is clear that Luke’s aim is to compare the two important figures. Philip Ryken, who has written a good deal on the Bible’s literary features, observes some of the similarities: “two cousins, two pregnancies, two hymns of praise, and two deliveries at the beginning of two great lives.”[1] Slide: Notice the differences also: John came in the Spirit and power of Elijah to point others to the Lord. But Jesus isKing and Lord. John would be filled withthe Holy Spirit, but Jesus would be born of the Holy Spirit. John would be great beforethe Lord. But Jesus is called “great” without qualification. Both men are great, but Luke intends to show you in these birth narratives who is the true object of our worship. Jesus is infinitely greater. Though he is great like this, his humble approach is staggering. The announcement of his birth came to a very unlikely place and person. Lowly Place and Person Place:Luke’s mention of the specific location of this event is significant because of the lowly size and poor reputation of Nazareth. You may remember the words of Nathaniel when he first heard of Jesus and his hometown: “‘Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?’” (John 1:46). Nazareth was far off the path of the important places in Israel. It was a halfway stop between Tyre and Sidon, and was full of Gentiles and Roman soldiers. Person: Mary was also an unlikely and unknown figure. Scholars believe she was probably no more than 15 years old, and perhaps as young as 12, probably illiterate, like most poor young women in that time, with little knowledge of the Scriptures, other than what she had memorized at home or heard in the synagogue. Her life was not set up for greatness. She would marry young, bear other poor children, never travel far from home, and eventually die like others before her. Pastor Kent Hughes writes, Mary was “a nobody in a nothing town in the middle of nowhere… [but]the greatest news ever proclaimed in Israel came to the humblest of its people!” Hughes continues, “The Lord comes to needypeople—those who realize that without him they cannot make it—those who acknowledge their weakness and spiritual lack. The Incarnation, salvation, resurrection, Christmasare not for the proud and self-sufficient.”[2] This is truly incredible and says something about our God. The greatest honor ever given to man, to be the mother of the Lord Jesus, was given to a teenage peasant girl! As we move forward in the story, we will see God continue to bring this news to unlikely people. The announcement will come to lowly Shepherds in the following chapter. Maybe your life feels insignificant today. You need to know that God knows you. His birth, his coming, his kingdom is for people like you. This humble beginning sets the stage for the humble life that Jesus would lead, pursuing the poor, the meek, the sinner. Let’s continue in the text. Verse 28: 28 And [Gabriel] came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. 30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. The angel here acknowledges the favor, the grace, being shownto this young woman. This is why we believe that Mary is not to be prayed to or worshipped, but yet one that should be honored as incredibly blessed by virtue of the grace that has been shown to her by God. Just think, our Lord’s face will resemble Mary’s face. This gift was given to her not because she was sinless or a perpetual virgin, neither of which are anywhere taught in Scripture, but because she has been shown grace by God. “Greetings, o favored one, the Lord is with you” is an Old Testament greeting which affirmed that God would help the recipient. This was a kind greeting because this young girl was shaken up. We are told that she was “greatly troubled” and that she tried to discern what was happening to her. She was not hysterical, but sought to understand. This is a pretty amazing young woman. How do you think you would respond if it were you? Then came the incredible announcement to Mary: “You will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.” Oh how I love the name of Jesus. Though this was a common name in that time, Mary was the first person to hear the name of the Messiah. What a sweet name. Jesus is a Greek rendering of the Hebrew name Joshua, meaning “Yahweh Saves”. This naming is no coincidence. One commentator writes, “Just as Joshua had led Israel into the Promised Land (see Joshua 1:1–2), so Jesus would lead his people into eternal life.” People took the meaning of names seriously in that time, seeing them as having power. At the name of Jesus demons would be cast out, the sick would be healed, and the dead would be raised.[3] Here at All Peoples Church, we love the name of Jesus and believe there is power in the name of Jesus. Gabriel told Mary that the child “will be great and will be called Son of the Most High”. This title “Son” is a significant Messianic title that would have been recognized by anyone who had knowledge of the Scriptures. Think about Gen 49 where Jacob prophecies the greatness of Judah’s offspring, or Psalm 2, the famous Messianic Psalm, which warns all who would fail to submit to the “Son”, or Isaiah, which teems with Messianic descriptions and prophecy. I’ll read two of them: “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon[d] his shoulder, and his name shall be called[e] Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). If that title didn’t ring bells for Mary, the angel made it even more explicit: And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” Mary is told that Jesus would fulfill the covenant promises made to King David that someone would reign on his throne forever. It is no coincidence that Joseph AND MARY were of the lineage of David. Let’s look at 2 Samuel 7, from where this promise comes. Starting in verse 12, God speaking to David, tells him that when he dies he will raise up offspring after him through whom he will establish his throne forever. 13 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. The beginning of this prophecy is initially fulfilled in the reign of his son, King Solomon, and further, in the reign of his sons, but the unusual and amazing promise here is that even though God prophesies that these sons would fall in sin, God promises that his steadfast love would not be taken away from this “son”, like it was taken from king Saul. Instead, David’s house and kingdom would be made sure forever through him. Gabriel tells Mary as explicitly as it comes, this child you are about to have is the long awaited son of David, who will reign over the “house of Jacob forever”, which stands for all of Israel. His reign will never end. Mary would have put the pieces together and known the weight of these sayings. This child was not just any child of God, like we would call ourselves a child of God. He would reign forever. He would be called “Immanuel” – God with us. This child had a unique identity, a divine sonship. Yahweh was truly coming to save his people. At Jesus’s conception (1:35), at his baptism (3:22), at his transfiguration (9:35), and in his resurrection (Acts 13:33), Luke is slowly unfolding the true identity of Jesus of Nazareth – this Jesus is God the Son, the second member of the Trinity, the eternal Son being born to man. Imagine your newsfeed blowing up with the news “Aliens land on earth!” This announcement would go viral and change the course of history forever. This is probably just how crazy this would have been for Jews of this day to hear the news “God will become a man”. First, God hadn’t spoken, it was believed, for 400 years. More importantly, it was unthinkable, even impossible, in the Jewish mind that the Creator could become one of the creatures. The Vikings winning the super bowl seems impossible, and would be pretty incredible to hear about, but I promise you, Vikings fans, it would pale in comparison to this. This announcement literally changed the course of history. It is truly “The Greatest Announcement Ever Made”. Mary’s Question: Mary couldn’t help herself. The most obvious question arising in her mind was “How is this possible”? I’m a virgin (vs 34). It’s important to note the difference between Zechariah and Mary’s questions. Zechariah’s question doubted the angel’s words. He wanted some sort of sign to knowthat it will come to pass. But Mary, believing that the event would take place simply asks “how”? In what way. Mary, being betrothed to Joseph, would not have lived with him and would certainly not have had sexual relations with him. The betrothal period was even considered a testing period for the betrothed couple to prove their sexual fidelity. It usually lasted up to a year and any sexual act would have actually been considered adultery. Mary was carefully preserving her sexual purity, according to God’s commands, so understanding how babies came into the world raised questions for Mary. Jesus’s greatness only gets clearer as the angel keeps speaking. Look at verse 35: The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. “How will I have this child?”, the young virgin asked. Gabriel’s reply: GOD will do it. The Spirit of God will come upon you; he will overshadow you. One commentator points out that this image of overshadowing can be seen throughout Scripture all the way back to the creation narrative when the Spirit hovered over the waters (Gen. 1:2).[4] Jesus birth would not be a result of man. Mary knew that what the angel was saying was impossible. It would be a miracle, a child born of the Holy Spirit, a creative miracle, similar to the creation of the first man, but far far greater. The texts reads, “Therefore”, as a result of this miraculous work of the Holy Spirit, we are told that this child would be “called holy – the Son of God.” This would not be like any other child. This would be God with us. God incarnated in human flesh. Some might wonder why did God need to do it this way? Why did the Christ have to be born of a virgin? I’m glad you asked. This, is in fact our hope, that Jesus was not born of Adam’s seed. Humanity could not be saved from within because every man born of Adam, humanity’s head, the first father, was born with sin, a sin nature. We needed a Savior from without. He was born of the Holy Spirit. But he also had to be man in order to save mankind. It could not be the blood of bulls or goats that would atone for our sin. It had to be the very image of God. So, Jesus was born of a woman, Mary. Therefore, this man was holy. He was a son like Adam, but one without sin: one man with two natures, fully God and fully man. The God-man. Theologian Wayne Grudem writes: “[The incarnation] is by far the most amazing miracle of the entire Bible – – far more amazing than the resurrection and more amazing even than the creation of the universe. The fact that the infinite, omnipotent, eternal Son of God could become man and join himself to a human nature forever, so that infinite God became one person with finite man, will remain for eternity the most profound miracle and the most profound mystery in all the universe (Grudem, 563).” Christians believe and have confessed this miracle for millennia. The virgin birth is one of the primary doctrines that uphold his deity. Denying it is to deny the faith. Jesus is not just any man. He is like no other. There is none greater. Kindly, the angel gave Mary a sign that this miracle would indeed take place, saying, 36 And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. 37 For nothing will be impossible with God.” “Mary, I know that this seems impossible and beyond your comprehension, but you know your elderly cousin, Elizabeth, who was barren, she is now 6 months pregnant. Mary, you need to know nothing will be impossible with God.” Some of you need to hear this today. As you consider the call that is before you, the mission, the lifestyle, the holiness he is calling you to that seems so impossible – nothing will be impossible with God! No sin is too great, no land too far, no amount too much, no mission too big for God. “If God is for us, who can be against us” (Rom 8:31)! Mary’s Belief Lead to Surrender vv. 38 Having heard all the angel’s words, having heard the greatness and humility of the King to be born, Mary responds with the famous words, 38 “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” Church, I hope these words catch you by surprise like they did me this week. Teenage Mary’s thoughtful question has been answered. She’s heard everything the angel has said, and pondering it all, her response is, “I know I am not my own. I am a servant of the Lord. So let it be just as you have said.” I seriously can’t believe the humility of this young woman. God was truly with her. Her identity informs her response. Do you see that? “I am the servant of the Lord. Therefore, let it be.” “It will bring me shame but I am your servant. This life God has given me is not about me, but about what He has for me. This marriage I am excited about may end as a result of this, but your call for me is more important than this marriage, than my reputation, than my choice for my body, my energy, the entire trajectory of my life! My life is not my own, but it is God’s. I am the servant of the Lord, so let it be as you’ve said!” Mary would suffer the pain child birth, and the strain of raising children in poverty. She would see her son ridiculed before all the religious leaders of Israel, the people of his own town, she would be in turmoil over Jesus’s identity; she would show up to try to pull him away from the mess of it all; and she would stand in witness of his brutal lashing and crucifixion. She would eventually worship at her resurrected son’s feet, the feet that were formed in her body; she would again hold the nail-pierced hands that she so tenderly caressed as a child, and embrace the face that nursed at her bosom, and the body which carried all the weight of her sin and the sin of the world. This young woman didn’t have any clue of what pain she was getting herself into, ultimately, but she was ready and willing to take it on because she saw herself as God’s servant. Mary is the first one to believe this message about who Jesus is. This is why some have called her the first Christian. She is truly a model for the Christian life, indeed, for all humans. Our Belief Must Lead to Surrender This Gospel of God has come to you today. What are you doing with it? Do you embrace it with humble faith like Mary, or do you reject it in pride because you can’t prove it? Mary’s understanding of her lowliness before God aided her with the humility to bow in submission to God. Do you think of yourself as too great, too educated, to believe such a story and submit to God’s call to come and serve him, to die to self so that you might be reborn in Christ? The doctrine of the virgin birth and the Christian message is not one to try to debate or prove, but a miracle of grace to be embraced in faith. Though it stands under scrutiny, God’s Word is not to be tested by the supposed greater authority of science or human logic. Jesus’s divine nature is not one to be fully comprehended, but a mystery to be embraced in faith, his conquering Kingdom one to be surrendered to, not reasoned with. We seek and we find. We look and learn by all the sciences, archeology, and history. But God has revealed himself to us in his Word and in Jesus, who was given for our salvation, and confirmed by many signs, the greatest being the sign of the resurrection, and it is up to us to humbly submit to our Maker, who formed us to serve him in joyful relationship with him. Submitting Your Life Jesus calls for your allegiance today. Is that what he has? God didn’t come to Mary and offer her an option that only involved a couple years of her life, some of her money, time, talent, but rather called her to a life surrendered to God’s purposes for her. If you are believing today, is your heart like Mary’s, ready and willing to drop anything and everything at the beckoning call of the King in humble submission to him? Don’t you see that choosing Christ, being baptized into him, means dying to self completely so that Christ’s life could reign in you? Are you surrendering your finances right now, your career, your dreams, that relationship, your family to Christ the King. Are you like Mary laying down your sexual desires and inclinations to serve the Lord? Are you willing to say no to the world and lose its honor in order to say to yes the Lord and gain his? What is he calling you to today? And what is your response? Do you see yourself as a servant of the Lord, ready to surrender to him no matter what it is. Jesus Conclusion: In calling you to lay down your life in surrender to him, Christ is calling you to do something that he has already done. What Mary did for Christ, Christ did infinitely more. He left heaven and all of his glory, taking on human flesh in utter humility, even dying the death that we deserve for the mess we’ve put ourselves in with sin (Phil 2). If the path he calls you to today seems impossible, unnatural, and low, Christ has gone lower. And in calling you low with him, in calling you to take your cross with him, he is only calling you to greatness in resurrection life. If we have died with him, we will also be raised with him. Our belief in God must lead us to surrender from the beginning to the end. Let’s pray. [1]Philip Graham Ryken, Luke, ed. Richard D. Phillips, Philip Graham Ryken, and Daniel M. 80: A Community Urologist Shares Her Journey and Career

Session 80 Dr. Mary McHugh is a urologist who's been out in practice for a year and a half. She talks about her journey to urology, especially as a female, in a very male-dominated specialty. Also, be sure to check out all our other podcasts on MedEd Media Network to help you along this journey towards finally becoming a full-fledged physician! [01:21] Interest in Urology Mary was exposed early on to urology when she was a second-year student during a six-week general urinary block that covered OB/Gyn and Urology. She saw how urologists were fairly entertaining who showed videos of the robot. From that moment on, she got introduced to the concept of the specialty that she had never even considered or known much about. But this sparked her interest in learning more about surgical fields. "I just never thought about urology - period... I had always thought women didn't become surgeons." She always thought she'd do something that wasn't procedure-based or medicine-based. That said, she didn't really experience any gender bias when she took the course. In fact, there wasn't any single female lecture in the course. Every single person that came and talked to them was a man. So it was interesting she ended up down this path. What she really liked boiled down to medical management, procedures, and surgery. She likes the organ system, the anatomy, and that some of the problems had to deal with the quality of life. What she likes about it is that 100% of the issues people deal with is quality of life. And being able to make that impact and make it fairly quick, it leads to a lot of satisfaction to both patients and physicians. [04:20] What is Quality of Life? One of the biggest quality of life issues is overactive bladder urinary frequency. This would not be considered to be a life-threatening illness. However, it's something that affects how they carry out their daily activities. And some people get so bothered by this. Fortunately, there are things they can do for that to be fixed but they never even realized until they stepped into a urologist's office. Another example is stress urinary incontinence. This is leakage, or anytime there is an increase in intraabdominal pressure. So when a woman or man coughs, laughs, or sneezes, they may leak urine. Again, not a life-threatening condition, but can be ostracizing and can interfere with things they like to do like running, dancing, horse-back riding, hiking. They have things urologists can do to help improve that. [05:45] Traits that Lead to Becoming a Good Urologist You have to be a good listener and a good communicator, especially that patients that come to you have very sensitive issues that deal with sensitive areas of the body. And they want to feel like they've been heard and understood. As a woman, you get a lot of male patients that are very shy when they come in. But you have to make them feel at ease and like they can open up to you and talk to you, so you can get to the root of the problem. "Anybody who is going to be counseling patients on procedures, you really have to be a good communicator." That being said, you have to be able to set expectations and be very clear about what's happening, what the potential risks, complications, side effects, etc. So patients really know what they're getting into when they're signing up for surgery. Mary had other interests prior to urology such as dermatology to GI and then to peds, until eventually, she found urology after she took the course and went on her clerkships. She chose a clerkship path where surgery was second to rotation so she was able to make that decision right away. [08:18] Types of Patients Among her patients are those with overactive bladder, stress urinary incontinence, voiding symptoms in men due to enlarged prostate, erectile dysfunction, and recurrent infection (a big one she sees). She also sees a lot of chronic bladder pain syndrome or interstitial cystitis, stones, and hematuria workups. Mary is in private practice in northern New Jersey and she says 70% of her patients where an OB/GYN will identify a problem and send the patients to her. Then she goes from there and does everything on her own. The other 30% are looking for another opinion or have things done or they've seen another urologist. So about 70% are common and the other 30% come with some things done. [11:11] Choosing Private Practice over Community Setting Mary's husband came out of his training first and finished his fellowship. He wanted a specific job in a specific location so he moved while she was finishing her last year of residency. She has always envisioned herself going into private practice. She thinks it's hard to provide training and mentorship to residents when you haven't been out in practice or out in the world. She also likes the independence of private practice as she has always liked doing things herself and at her own pace. "It was the job market and my own style and personality that really influenced me to go into private practice." During Mondays, Mary is in the office seeing patients. Wednesdays are full days in the office seeing patients. Fridays are procedures they do in the office such as cystoscopy, vasectomy, urodynamics, and other procedures. She also does prostate biopsies and ultrasound and injection of Botox to the bladder. Tuesdays and Thursdays are a bit more variable. As a new attending in their area where they're saturated with physicians, it can be hard to get block time. So when she puts cases on her schedule, they get added to the hospitals she's on staff at. The way you get block time is either to acquire somebody else's block or to be employed by the hospital system. A lot of the consultations she gets sent are a lot of non-operative patients. About 20-25% of all the patients she sees end up having a procedure whether it be in the office or having surgery. This can be a little disappointing for her considering she wants to do surgery. "You do the cases that you can and you have the best outcomes that you can and that's how you build your reputation." She explains that one of the biggest things you have to realize coming out of training is that it takes time to build and it takes time to establish yourself and establish your reputation. Don't believe everything you see on Instagram where everyone has 10,000 cases on their first day. [17:55] Urology as a Male-Dominated Specialty It's just the perception of a lot of patients that only males will treat that part of the body or look at that part of the body. It has to do with traditionally, who was in the specialty looking back 20-40 years where even every specialty was even male-dominated. That said, women are still a rarity in the field but a lot more women are being trained now which is great for both male and female patients. [19:20] Taking Calls and Emergency Cases Mary is in a large urology group and in her care center, there's only two of them. Their call is going to be split by whoever is in your care center. So it's every other night for her. ER calls are determined by hospitals. One of the hospitals assigns ER calls a month at a time. She doesn't describe it as too bad. But based on politics, some hospitals keep a stronghold on the call and don't want outsiders taking it which she considers as a blessing in disguise. Some of the emergencies they see are necrotizing fasciitis of the genitals, testicular torsion, abscesses, the common ones they get consults for their scrotal abscesses, and septic stones. And retention -  a common one they get consulted for all the time. Oftentimes, they call you and patients are super uncomfortable so you have to go take care of it. [22:13] Work-Life Balance Mary considers having enough family-work life balance. Her husband's hours are pretty long as well. So they have that time when they go home at night where there's a couple of hours and then the weekends. Whatever weekends he's not working. It's a lot better than training she calls it. And there are things you can do to minimize your calls your make sure everybody's questions are answered and everyone is tucked in. If you're doing a procedure on a Friday, everything is taken cared of and you don't have any worries about that when you go on call over the weekend. It's a matter of letting people know that you're available but also explaining to them what kinds of things they should be calling you for. When they're not on call for the practice, it's not as bad. [23:35] Residency Path to Urology Urology is its own training program. Most of the programs are five years, some are six years. Although a lot of them have gone down to five years. The first year is a general surgical internship and then usually for four or five years of urology. A lot of the programs that are six years have built-in research year. "If you're applying, know how long the program is going to be. But it's all one program you match into the whole thing." The urology match precedes all the other matches, after the military. But urology matches in December. It's not through the NRMP, but through the American Urologic Association. They give you a number and you do it through its own unique match. The reason for this could be that it's a self-regulation issue. When you're in a specialty, you don't want to have so many people. This is just Mary's guess though. Urology matching is pretty competitive. Check out urologymatch.com and find a more specific breakdown. There are not a lot of applicants but it's a 60% match rate for those applicants and they break it down in general. You have to be really high performing as a student and have good Step scores. The process could be different now as well. Mary is a DO and a lot of the programs that were DO are now in the urology match accredited by the ACGME as a single graduate medical education system. And so it's gotten a lot harder than when she matched since it was a separate match. She applied into the urology match and applied to as many programs as possible. But they've done away with programs that are just AOA accredited. Mostly, all are ACGME-accredited at this point. [26:38] Negative Bias Against DO and Other Subspecialties Having been on both sides of the interview trail and as an interviewer, she thinks there are biases. The Specialty Stories breaks down per specialty, MD vs DO, and Mary thinks the data speaks for itself. It can be done as a DO but that's more of the exception than the rule. There are a lot of subspecialties you can do after urology such as oncology (2-year and 1-year fellowships), female pelvic medicine and reconstruction (2-year and 1-year fellowships), pediatrics (2 years), reconstruction and trauma (1 year), andrology and male sexual health (1 year), and fertility. Those are the general subspecialties. Urology is its own subspecialty. [29:30] Working with Primary Care and Other Specialties Mary says there are a lot more technology and a lot more procedures to help patients. She commends those primary care doctors for starting people on medication and working up a lot of the urinary complaints. For instance, Botox is for patients with frequency and urgency, indicated if you've failed to two or more medications. Sometimes, patients think that there's no solution or they're stuck with the medications. And people are always so surprised when they learn about their options. So just getting them into the urologist sooner and not being afraid to send in a patient to see if there's anything else they have to offer. "Sometimes, patients think there's no solution or they're stuck with the medications. And people are always so surprised when they learn about their options." Other specialties they work the closest with are general surgeons, OB/GYNs, family practice and other mid-level providers like PAs, NPs, etc. Opportunities outside of clinical medicine for urologists include speaking engagements, expert witness, write books, consults, etc. [32:15] What She Wished She Knew that She Knows Now Mary believes that one of the hardest parts of being a surgeon is that you become extremely disappointed when something doesn't go according to plan or someone has a complication. Dealing with that the most is one of the hardest parts of her job as it's emotionally taxing. So you have to learn how to deal and cope with that. When you go out, everyone is just so bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and ready to soar, but it takes time. It takes time to develop a rhythm. It takes time to develop finesse. So there should be patience and you should respect the process. "What you've done 10,000 times as a chief resident that you can do with your eyes closed suddenly becomes the hardest thing when you're an attending." What Mary likes the most about being a urologist is her patients which she considers to be very awesome and this adds to her job satisfaction 100%. She comes from an urban area in her training and so now it's different there. Now, she's out in the community and the suburbs. Patients listen to her and they take their medication. They make her job very enjoyable. The thing she likes the least is that sometimes you feel helpless in your ability to help people because you're constrained by what insurances will cover. This is an issue because people are on a fixed income and they can't afford these things. If she had to do it all over again, Mary would still probably do it. Again, on social media,  you see these people so happy after some procedures. But what it all comes down to is to think about what complaints or complications you're going to deal with. [37:30] Final Words of Wisdom Stay interested. Read as much as you can, when you can. Getting exposure early is key. If you're a medical student, it's doing all the things you should do to match into a competitive specialty. Learn the people who are on the faculty at your institution. Get involved with research. Meet the residents and get that chairman's letter if you have a department. Do as well as you can and you'll succeed! Links: MedEd Media Network urologymatch.com

She was born in the Philippines, grew up in the U.S. territory of Guam, and believes all those years of island fever ignited her serious case of wanderlust. She currently works full time as a database developer and computer programmer. She writes about the family'’s travels along with tips and guides on her blog, The World Is a Book. She is also a family travel writer for Hilton Hotels and Resorts' Hilton Mom Voyage site. The family loves cruises, castles, National Parks, and museums, from art to quirky. Follow Mary on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest. THINGS TO DO IN HAWAII Mauna Kea is the highest point in the state of Hawaii. If you plan on going up to the summit you need to pack for winter weather. The rangers of the park also recommend that kid should be fourteen and up due to the altitude changes. You can also go up to the visitors center which is not all the way to the summit but sits above the clouds, so the view is great. If you have the money to splurge, taking a helicopter tour is a great way to so see lava and waterfalls around the Big Island. There are plenty of places to go snorkeling in the ocean. You can see some beautiful creatures underwater. Get up close and feel the heat of the lava flowing into the ocean by taking a boat tour. But Please be safe! Lava is always changing and can be unpredictable. Volcanoes National Park is open 24 hours. You can stay at the lodging inside of the park right by the visitors center. There are a lot of great things to see but pack for layers because some areas will cold while others are warm. There are also a lot of places that are kind of wet. Be sure to wear closed toed shoes because you will be walking on some areas where it is lava rocks. There is a lot to do in the Kohola area that houses the Disney Aulani Resort. It is a little bit quieter, less hectic and congested. Hiking up to Diamond Head is a great place to see beautiful views. And it is perfectly fine to hike with toddlers. If you have never been to a luau before, you should definitely check out the Polynesian Cultural Center because you get a glimpse into their culture and there is dinner and dancing. BEST PLACE TO TAKE FAMILY PHOTO On Oahu, the best place to take a family photo is right on Waikiki beach with Diamond Head in the background or in front of the Byodo-In Temple, which is a really pretty Japanese-style temple. Then on the Big Island inside Volcanoes National Park is great for many different kinds of shots. FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR Mary likes to be comfortable when she travels in her ‘Columbia’ travel pants. She usually wears black tops and brings her flip flops and her ‘Converse’ sneakers without laces. APP OF THE WEEK Hawaii does have Uber! But you should definitely look into renting a car. There are a lot of things to see that are within driving distance. Mary Wittenberg & Virgin Sport - Social Movement  As CEO of the New York Road Runners from 2005 to 2015, and having been involved with them since 1998, Mary Wittenberg helped the NY Marathon grow to include 400,000 participants, including 120,000 school children across multiple events and helped found the World Marathon Majors which connected the marathons in Boston, Berlin, London, Chicago and New York.  Since stepping down from NYRR, Mary is now Global CEO of Virgin Sport and together with Richard Branson, she is re-inventing group athleticism to encourage as many people as possible to experience social running.  Virgin Sport has four weekend multi-events on the calendar with more to follow. And you know if Richard Branson is involved, these fitness festivals will truly be special. In this episode Mary tells us about the philosophy behind Virgin Sport and how they are engaging athletes of all levels. She also goes into detail about the events currently on the calendar as well as what the future of Virgin Sport looks like.  She shares her experiences of running, both as an athlete and as a race organizer and group leader. Her passion for running and fitness shine through in this conversation.  She is an inspiration and we are all very lucky to have her join us on Run To The Top. Here are some of the topics we’ll discuss today: How Mary’s rowing team led to her becoming a runner What Mary did as CEO of NYRR and how the youth program grew under her leadership What it was like to run the NYM after being the CEO. Why she believes running is for just about everyone, especially kids The current and future vision of Virgin Sport Questions Mary is asked: 3:14 What is your background as a runner? 4:40 How much has competitive running changed since you were a more serious athlete? 6:13 Had it been an available option would you have continued post-collegiate running? 6:57 Do you still run now? 8:22 What was it like to run the New York Marathon after having been the director for so long? 11:53 What did being the CEO of New York Road Runners entail? 15:33 Why did you feel it was so important to build it at a youth level vs. focusing on adults? 17:20 Of the 50+ NYRR events, which is your favorite? 18:10 What about being the first female marathon race director? 19:29 Why do you think it’s important to have other events outside of traditional marathons for people to choose from and do you think other cities will adopt these, too 21:31 What about your current job as CEO of Virgin Sport? 23:33 What can you tell us about these initial four festivals you have scheduled? 26:08 Can people pick and choose which events they want to do, can they do all of them? 27:18 How do potential future events look for Virgin Sport beyond these first four cities? 28:43 How could someone get involved in these events? 30:03 What is it about running that makes you want to share it with as many people as possible? 31:56 Where you would like Virgin Sport to be in 10 years? 33:07 What can more recreational runners do in their own world to inspire others? 34:57 What do you think about Park Run? 38:09 The Final Kick Round Quotes by Mary:  I think there’s many more opportunities today for young runners and athletes in other sports that switch to running to find a post-collegiate running group and run pretty seriously. You realize as time goes on that there are still roadblocks to women in leadership. If you fit running and some high intensity running into your life, it may be the best way for you to get healthy and fit. It’s not just about the marathon. I have always had this burning desire to take the model of community based running and fitness on the road. We’re in the experience business. Our Proposition is based on bringing people together. For us, the challenger in the industry is not other people putting on events, because from a mission of purpose that’s awesome they’re doing that. Our challenge is the things that stop people; the comfortable bed, the super-busy workday. Just by getting out the door every day, you inspire people. When people see people running, other people realize: ‘Oh. maybe I can do that, too.’   Mentioned in this podcast:  Virgin Sport Homepage NY Road Runners The New York City Marathon Park Run Book: A Race Like No Other; Liz Robbins Book: Once a Runner; John L. In this episode, she talks about how she got these opportunities and how you can get more guest blogging opportunities. The most important element of a content marketing strategy is to write for the needs and wants of your audience.
