ZEN Graphene Solutions (ZEN:TSXV) and its partner “DLR” (The German Aerospace Center) reported more good news pertaining to their battery development program. The results were very technical in nature but CEO Francis Dube sat down with AGORACOM to explain their meaning in layman’s terms, as well as, how good these results are relative to tests by other companies. Hint – they’re better by a wide margin. The results were so good that DLR applied for and received federal funding to create a new Innovation Lab (the Center for Aerogels) to work with industrial partners on the development of Aerogels and other graphene-based products. This is a significant interview and well worth the time to watch it.

But that's all tarring the red planet with too broad a brush, perhaps. It's not all a rusty, frozen hellscape. At the mid-latitudes, just inches down into the ground, you'd find ice—frozen gases like carbon dioxide, even frozen water.

Let me start with a question, what is the lightest material on the planet? The answer is something called Aerogel. It is so light and so durable that NASA used it to capture ‘Stardust’. Impressive for a product that has its roots in a #2 Pencil, Carbon. Why do I introduce this Fact? Karen Biehl has created the musical equivalent of Aerogel, the music is so light yet so well composed that the listener is picked up and transported to a world of peace and tranquility, a place that is so sadly lacking in our modern world. Some music is designed to provoke, some music is designed to be ignored, and some music just picks you up and takes you on a journey. Starlight Dreams is certainly in the category of ‘taking you on a journey’. As with any musician I listen to I went digging online for information, her website is www.maestramusica.com What surprised me about the site was that it was not your usual, About me, Buy My Album, and Good Bye. What does it take to design and market the warmest jacket on the market? What is the target audience for this type of product? When is the best time to launch? Joining the podcast to talk about the Kistler Aerogel Jacket is Henry Wang. Henry is a business partner for Kistler, and it was my pleasure to speak with him about their incredible product. In our conversation, Henry opens up about their pre-campaign efforts, why they decided to connect with Enventys Partners, the video they made for the product, and much more. Don’t miss a minute of this engaging episode featuring Henry Wang and the Kistler jacket. Creating the warmest jacket. Have you ever heard of aerogel? It’s a type of insulating material used to create ultra warm clothing. Aerogel was first created by Samuel Stephens Kistler in 1931. It’s an extremely durable and flexible material that is much more effective than other insulators such as down. It is the lightest solid in the world, and even NASA trusts aerogel technology to be used in their spacesuits, which are put through some of the universe’s harshest conditions. Kistler used Aerogel to create what they call “the warmest jacket.” Make sure to check out the link to their Kickstarter campaign located in the resources section at the end of this post. Finding the right partnerships. How do you find the right connections and partnerships to produce and market your invention? Is it a realistic to expect that you’ll find marketing partners along the way? Kistler decided to partner with Henry Wang as a business partner to lead their marketing efforts highlighting the Kistler jacket in the United States marketplace. Kistler also ended up connecting with Enventys Partners to roll out a robust and effective marketing strategy. To get the full story on Kistler and their successful partnerships, make sure to listen to this episode! Is there a perfect time to launch a product? When is the right time to launch a product? Should crowdfunding projects pay extra attention to the timing of their product launch? The team at Kistler decided to launch their product during a period that overlapped with the holiday season. Even though they launched during the holiday season they still experienced a good number of orders. Henry encourages inventors who launch during this season to stay optimistic because the numbers and traffic do tend to ebb and flow. To hear more of Henry’s take on launching during the holiday season, make sure to listen to this episode! Valuing backer feedback. When you launch a crowdfunded product, you’ve got to be prepared for backer feedback. Some inventors take a hyper-vigilant approach, and others don’t pay attention to backer feedback at all. “Innovation is the blood in our veins. It is what drives us every day, so we need to invest in it.”   This week on The Commerce Lab, Allan interviews Michael Markesbery, co-founder and CEO of the innovative Oros Apparel. They discuss how Oros got started, what PR can do for a growing brand, and how to develop a product from scratch.Michael has a very unique story. As a pre-med student at Miami of Ohio, Michael got wind of NASA's Aerogel technology, which is the material they put in space rovers and equipment for insulation in space. As a lover of the outdoors, Michael got tired of having to wear a ton of layers to keep warm and began to research how Aerogel might be utilized to make lighter, more efficient activewear for winter weather. He pitched it to his classmate, Rithvik, and they got to work. Several years, some technology-tweaking, and a $320,000 Kickstarter campaign later, Oros was born.   “You need to be as human as physically possible. Not only does it help your conversion rates, but it's also just the right thing to do.”   As 22-year old students, Michael and Rithvik had to get creative to bring attention to their brand and scale the business on limited resources. To date, both men have appeared in Outside Magazine, Runner's World, and Forbes' 30 under 30.As Allan points out, this is outstanding press for a young brand, and Michael goes into more detail on his PR strategy. Michael notes that PR was a top priority for the company and that PR is not only important, but it can be pretty much free. Michael credits Tim Ferris's “How to Raise $100,000 in 10 days” as an inspiration. This strategy entails finding other similar brands to yours and then tracking down their PR to make a list of outlets (and thereby contributors) who are likely to be interested in what you do. From there, it's about connecting to these people and drawing them to your brand. It's tried and true, and Michael and Rithvik continue to use it year after year. “Oros happens to be aspirational largely in part due of our innovation. And so what that means is that we need to be heavily focused not just on marketing, but on innovation. Fortunately, those two go hand in hand.”   Michael discusses his role as CEO and how he looks at the organization and operations of the company he runs. Oros is unique because of how truly original the product is, and Michael focuses on the innovation of the product, which supports the ethos and the vision of the company. He speaks about the virtues of venture backing given the nature of the company and how it helps in scaling. Michael talks about the dynamic of working with a co-founder, and the importance of each partner working within their strengths. Michael speaks about the culture of the team he works with, and the 20% of decisions made that propel the business forward – particularly the creation of an advisory board full of experienced mentors and the importance of good time management.   Some Topics we talk about in this episode:   • The Oros Story – 3:15• The Marketing Process – 6:45• How PR Factors In/PR Strategy - 8:42• Preserving Innovation – 14:25• Venture Funding – 16:50• The 80/20 Decisions – 20:00• Oros Advisory Board - 20:30• Time and Stress Management - 23:50• Wrap-up and Takeaways - 30:00   How to get involved Join the community of brand owners and industry influencers in the Facebook group The Commerce Lab or visit thecommercelab.com. Aerogel as Clear As Glass:  (Starts 4:00)   Most aerogels "windows" are kind of foggy looking.  A CU-Boulder science team has created something better.  It's a liquid made from recycled plant material, a liquid that hardens into a  gel that’s almost as light as air, almost as clear as glass, yet it can insulate against temperature changes.  This “gel” is flexible enough, you can wear it like a glove. And they’ve made it from a rather environmentally friendly source — it’s cellulose, created by microbes “digesting” the beer mash that gets left over after  making beer.  New Science Standards for Colorado Public Schools (Starts 13:30):  CU Boulder Education Research expert Erin Furtak explains new, more hands-on and interactive way to learn science.  These will soon be part of Colorado Public Schools.  The new science standards will be the first update of Colorado Science Education Standards in well over a decade.  In addition to teachers using these standards, parents can, too. By using a cold substrate and 3D printing technology, Lin and his team are creating a graphene aerogel that's almost as light as air, in fact, it's composed of 99.8% air, yet remains as strong as steel.  Lin is partnering with a professor of chemistry at Kansas State to tackle what he sees as a major application of this graphene aerogel: energy in the form of higher-capacity, more efficient sodium ion batteries. This is important because improving battery performance could ultimately lead to lower energy consumption worldwide.  To reach out with questions about Lin's ongoing research, feel free to send him an email at dongl@ksu.edu.
