Poet, novelist, and environmentalist Wendell Berry lives in Port Royal, Kentucky near his birthplace, where he has maintained a farm for over 40 years. Mistrustful of technology, he holds deep reverence for the land and is a staunch defender of agrarian values. He is the author of over 50 books of poetry, fiction, and essays. His poetry celebrates the holiness of life and everyday miracles often taken for granted. In 2016, Berry was awarded the Ivan Sandrof Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Books Critics Circle. In 2010, Barack Obama awarded him with the National Humanities Medal. Berry's other honors include the T.S. Eliot Prize, the Aiken Taylor Award for poetry, the John Hay Award of the Orion Society, and the Richard C. Holbrooke Distinguished Achievement Award of the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. Berry's poetry collections include This Day: Collected & New Sabbath Poems (2014), Given (2005), A Timbered Choir: The Sabbath Poems 1979-1997, Entries: Poems (1994), Traveling at Home (1989), The Selected Poems of Wendell Berry (1988), Collected Poems 1957-1982 (1985), Clearing (1977), There Is Singing Around Me (1976), and The Broken Ground (1964).Critics and scholars have acknowledged Wendell Berry as a master of many literary genres, but whether he is writing poetry, fiction, or essays, his message is essentially the same: humans must learn to live in harmony with the natural rhythms of the earth or perish. His book The Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture (1977), which analyzes the many failures of modern, mechanized life, is one of the key texts of the environmental movement. Berry has criticized environmentalists as well as those involved with big businesses and land development. In his opinion, many environmentalists place too much emphasis on wild lands without acknowledging the importance of agriculture to our society. Berry strongly believes that small-scale farming is essential to healthy local economies, and that strong local economies are essential to the survival of the species and the wellbeing of the planet. In an interview with New Perspectives Quarterly editor Marilyn Berlin Snell, Berry explained: “Today, local economies are being destroyed by the ‘pluralistic,' displaced, global economy, which has no respect for what works in a locality. The global economy is built on the principle that one place can be exploited, even destroyed, for the sake of another place.”Berry further believes that traditional values, such as marital fidelity and strong community ties, are essential for the survival of humankind. In his view, the disintegration of communities can be traced to the rise of agribusiness: large-scale farming under the control of giant corporations. Besides relying on chemical pesticides and fertilizers, promoting soil erosion, and causing depletion of ancient aquifers, agribusiness has driven countless small farms out of existence and destroyed local communities in the process. In a New Perspectives Quarterly interview Berry commented that such large-scale agriculture is morally as well as environmentally unacceptable: “We must support what supports local life, which means community, family, household life—the moral capital our larger institutions have to come to rest upon. If the larger institutions undermine the local life, they destroy that moral capital just exactly as the industrial economy has destroyed the natural capital of localities—soil fertility and so on. Essential wisdom accumulates in the community much as fertility builds in the soil.” Get full access to The Daily Poem Podcast at dailypoempod.substack.com/subscribe

Bob Bergland's vision and leadership led to the government's first initiative in organic and sustainable agriculture. This week, our host Ron talks with Bob about his several decades of public service, with the interview focusing primarily on four studies. This was recorded in 2017, one year before Bob passed away. Robert (Bob) Bergland was born on July 22, 1928, on a farm near Roseau, Minnesota. He lived in the community until he passed away in December 2018 at the age of 90. In 1963, he went to work for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, first at the state level in Minnesota, and later in Washington, D.C. In 1970, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving three terms from 1971 to 1977 as a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. In Congress, he served on the House Committee on Agriculture's subcommittees for Conservation and Credit, and Livestock, Grains, Dairy, and Poultry. In 1977, shortly after beginning a fourth term in the House, he was appointed Secretary of Agriculture by President Jimmy Carter and served in that role from Jan. 23, 1977, to Jan. 20, 1981. During his tenure, he commissioned a major report examining the structure of American agriculture, "A Time to Choose," and the first USDA study on organic farming, "Report and Recommendations on Organic Farming." At the end of President Carter's administration, he was named vice president and general manager of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. After retiring in 1994, he was elected by the Minnesota State Legislature to a term on the University of Minnesota Board of Regents. The interview was conducted on March 7, 2017. In this episode, we dive deeper into resources that are available to prospective students in Africa to use if planning to apply to schools in the US. Our guest Richard Ewane, founder of The Student Advisor, explains the entire process of applying to college as an international student successfully with an emphasis on making it through the complex process of the F-1 visa interview at the US Embassy. If you are a student or parent of a prospective student who is confused and/or overwhelmed by the complex process of applying to college in the diaspora, then this episode is for you. Meet Our Guest Born in Cameroon, Richard Ewane attended primary school in Yaoundé and secondary school at Sacred Heart College Mankon, Bamenda. He then went to college in America, studying International Business and Economics at Ohio Northern University (ONU). Upon graduation, Mr. Ewane was hired by his alma mater, ONU, as an Admissions Counselor. After working at ONU, Mr. Ewane decided to return to Cameroon. He worked at the S. T. Muna Foundation for a few years and then he was recruited by the U.S. Embassy in Yaoundé as the EducationUSA Advisor, working with prospective students, their families, and other stakeholders to gain admission to U.S. institutions. During his tenure at the U.S. Embassy, Mr. Ewane recorded a seventeen percent (17%) increase in the number of successful applications from the country, the largest increase in over a decade! Driven by his desire to improve the lives of his fellow Cameroonian youth, Richard left his position at the US Embassy and went to work as the Chief of Staff to the international lawyer and anti-corruption champion, Akere "Mr. Clean'' Muna, a candidate in Cameroon's 2018 presidential election. Simultaneously, he launched The Student Advisor to continue the work he has been doing for a decade – effecting change by providing educational opportunities to Cameroonians. Today, he continues to work with the then-presidential candidate on matters of good governance and anti-corruption across the globe, as well as run The Student Advisor. All with the goal of bringing positive change to his community. So what we do is consulting for students who have been denied visas or about to go for an interview and steer them in the right direction.” - Richard Ewane [Founder, The Student Advisor] “A lot of students will stand in their own way. This is because they work with- and receive advice from people who have no idea what they are talking about.” - Richard Ewane [Founder, The Student Advisor] “There could be way more [international students studying in America]. We have so many more qualified students who just fall through the cracks because they don't have information. When I started working at the US Embassy, I did a full media bliss and we ended up having a 17% increase in the number of Cameroonian students studying in the US.” -  Richard Ewane [Founder, The Student Advisor] “Disseminating correct information is really important for our students because they don't know. You have all these kids who got 5As in Advanced Level, they should be going to MIT and Stanford and Berkeley, but they don't know they can. And even when they've seen other people do it, they don't know how to go about it.” - Richard Ewane [Founder, The Student Advisor] “Life would have been way easier and better if I had this kind of opportunity [with The Student Advisor] prior to coming to the United States as an international student. It is really amazing how much we just try to figure it out by ourselves because we don't have any guidance.” - Anyoh Fombad LEAVE A REVIEW and tell us what you think about the episode so we can continue putting out the best content just for you! God's creation is a direct reflection of God's glory, and Christians are called to be faithful stewards of the earth. While global issues of climate and environment can seem out of reach, our local communities give us space to learn and take action in small and large ways. How can we partner with our creator to build a better, more sustainable living environment? What simple, practical changes can we make to responsibly care for our local communities and our world?Chris and Eddie are joined by Jeff Bilbro, author of Virtues of Renewal: Wendell Berry's Sustainable Forms and Loving God's Wildness: The Christian Roots of Ecological Ethics in American Literature. Bilbro's work on ecology and theology has been heavily influenced by Wendell Berry, an environmental activist and author best known for his book The Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture. Bilbro calls his readers to a greater ecological and cultural imagination based in the idea of shalom, a vision of relational and community healing in the context of our environment. This episode explores the deep wisdom of Wendell Berry across his literary forms, the idea of interrelatedness within God's creation, and how to hold onto hope while enacting hope in our communities.Resources:Follow Jeff Bilbro on the web:https://jeffbilbro.com Follow Jeff Bilbro on Twitter:https://twitter.com/jeff_bilbro

"Now, as then - we see the abstract values of an industrial economy, preying upon the native productivity of land and people. The fur trade was only the first establishment on this continent of a mentality of whose triumph is it's catastrophe. My purposes in beginning with this survey of history are:To show how deeply rooted in our past is the mentality of exploitation. To show how fundamentally revolutionary it is.To show how crucial to our history, hence to our own minds, is the question of how we will relate to our land. This question, now that the corporate revolution has so determinedly invaded the farmland returns us to our oldest crisis. "Wendell Berry - The Unsettling of AmericaWhat the quote meansWhy the quote is relevantHorticulture vs AgriculturePolyculture vs MonocultureAbundance, Diversity, and HealthQuote from "The Unsettling of America: Culture & Agriculture" - Wendell BerrySince its publication in 1977, The Unsettling of America has been recognized as a classic of American letters. In it, Wendell Berry argues that good farming is a cultural and spiritual discipline. Today’s agribusiness, however, takes farming out of its cultural context and away from families. As a result, we as a nation are more estranged from the land―from the intimate knowledge, love, and care of it.Sadly, his arguments and observations are more relevant than ever. Although “this book has not had the happy fate of being proved wrong,” Berry writes, there are people working “to make something comely and enduring of our life on this earth.” Wendell Berry is one of those people, writing and working, as ever, with passion, eloquence, and conviction. This book is as old as I am, yet the arguments and observations are more relevant than ever. What does this mean? Why is this relevant?Because it's important to understand history. While history doesn't rhyme, it sure does sound familiar at times. The show began with a quote by Wendell Berry written over 40 years ago"To show how deeply rooted in our past is the mentality of exploitation.""To show how fundamentally revolutionary it is.""To show how crucial to our history, hence to our own minds, is the question of how we will relate to our land."Horticulture vs AgricultureThe mentality of exploitation appears to be a "newer" thought - a western thought. A thought developed in a culture that rose from the roots of an agricultural society, perhaps.Polyculture vs MonocultureMonoculture of land becomes representative in the thought process of the people. Monoculture of the mind. People change.Abundance, Diversity, and HealthPermaculture is the solution. How do we lead a Permaculture based life? In this episode, we have a boundaryless conversation with Tomas Diez, a Venezuelan Urbanist specialized in digital fabrication and its implications on the future of cities and society. He is the co-founder and director of Fab Lab Barcelona at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) and is a founding partner of the Fab City Global Initiative.  In our conversation with Tomas, we explore the democratization of the production of goods, mainly through technological progress and open knowledge sharing, and how this might affect the evolution of platform-enabled ecosystem driven production. We ask Tomas - through the lens of this transformation - what new subjectivities and constituents are empowered to organize in ways that are different, whether synergistic or integrated, with current globalization and digitalization trends. Of course, we cannot avoid touching on the changing landscape of risk and policy-making, as we connect with Tomas in the midst of the global pandemic. We also talk about the future of education and the need to reconsider Western-centric values and ways of knowing. Port Royal in Henry County, Kentucky has a population of less than a hundred. And it’s there that farmer, novelist, poet, and cultural critic Wendell Berry—whose family farmed Kentucky land for 7 generations—has been writing for much of his life. With work like The Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture, Wendell has functioned as both literary maverick and visionary to Americans for half a century, issuing warnings about industrial farming and the breaking apart of rural communities—concerns that are more immediate than ever. Back in May 2011, Berry appeared at Benaroya Hall for what he, with his trademark humor, terms a “prose sandwich:” the reading of a few poems, followed by his short story “Sold,” and ending with a final poem. After, he is joined by editor and publisher Jack Shoemaker, who talks with him about what “sustainability” really means, how to save our agricultural landscapes, and advising the young (which he calls “a cheap form of entertainment”).

It's time for the weekly Culture Translator Podcast - we know you’ve been anxiously awaiting!   This week...3 things to know:   Teens love to be challenged. Not in necessarily in school but rather through social media. See the next internet sensation challenge - The Deodorant Challenge.  This is just the latest hit in the long string of popular challenges (Tide Pod, Kylie Jenner Lip, Ice Bucket, Mannequin, etc.). This challenge involves spraying aerosol deodorant on someone else for as long as they can stand it. Sound weird? Try a bit dangerous. People are walking away from this challenge with severe burns and maybe a bit of pride. What’s at the root of this and why would students want to participate in something that is hurtful? The reason is not all the shocking or uncommon - peer pressure and FOMO. Teens want to be a part of what their friends are involved in. They don’t want to look like they can’t hang and so will do something that to others may look idiotic just to belong. That’s a driving force that will lead all of us to do things that we wouldn’t typically do. It is necessary to acknowledge the reality of peer pressure and the need to belong. Let’s not minimize that but rather call it out for what it is. This is a good starting point for conversation with your student- acknowledge the appeal of the challenge and how real peer pressure is. Topics to dive into from there include consequences of this challenge and where we get our identity and belonging from. Dive into their culture and then dive deep into conversation.   Wanna dive in deeper? Check out the links below: Deodrant Challenge Breakdown   Parents, How You Can Help   Apparently, this is America according to Childish Gambino - if you haven’t heard already, Childish Gambino (aka. Donald Glover) released a new song and music video that overnight became a cultural phenomenon. Celebrities were tweeting about the genius of it, fans were raving about the intentionality of it, and due to the nature of the content there were many others who didn’t feel positively about it. Regardless, there was talk. In the music video, Childish Gambino represents America herself taking a stance on the violent culture that we live in and the ways we utilize media and entertainment and internet fads as rose-colored glasses. Warning...this is a violent and fairly graphic music video. So know that if you watch it, which we encourage you to. Why? We encourage you to because it is a form of art that comments on the world we live in. GenZ is known to be culturally aware and socially sensitive - the issues Childish Gambino addresses (race, gun violence, and other taboo topics) are ones that your teens most likely care about and have opinions about. Here’s a great opportunity to Culture Translate [what we do with every piece of media we encounter]. Ask these questions about the song and music video: 1. What was good? 2. What was missing? 3. What was confusing? When we start with these questions we are acknowledging all sides of the art. First ask these questions to your teen and then you answer! Keep diving: Watch the Music Video Here   This Is America Hidden Meanings Explained!   Hidden Messages You May Have Missed   Why This Is So Popular    All Night is a new Hulu show that is pulling at high schooler’s heart strings. Not because it is so heartwarming though, because it walks with high school seniors as they are about to graduate. The impending end of their high school career drives them to live it up and try everything they always wanted to. They are really buying into that passé phrase, “Yolo.” All Night isn’t all that unique with the storyline but grabs at the experience of many teens - that desire to fully live and the urgency to do so. The characters live as if their lives will end after high school pushing them to do things they would typically never have had the courage to do. Although the show doesn’t offer much depth or substance, the conversation we find stemming from it does! Is this the message being taught to teens? Is there an example be modeled for students that this moment is all that life is about? It is not new for teenagers to be living for the here and now without so much as a nod to the future or consequences. However, where do we move from there? We encourage disciplers to paint a different vision as to what life is about. We rarely find lasting fulfillment from momentary pleasure, from the here and now, from a split second. Help them to identify consequences and to take a longer view than just this moment and just high school. There is a difference between being present and yolo-ing. Watch an episode if your teen is watching it. Then chat about it.   To the depths: All Night Official Trailer   BONUS TRANSLATION   Ninja vs. LeBron is essentially begging the question sports or esports. The virtual world at times seems to be becoming more of a reality to teens than reality itself. There are careers in which teens can play video games. There are scholarships now for gamers to go to university. Thirteen year olds are even being signed to professional esport teams. Yup, this is reality for gamers out there now. Here’s where it breaks down for us. We need to know and learn about the things that our students care about. What an act of love to meet them in the things that they love. This act goes past words and demonstrates care! At the same time, healthy boundaries are still okay and needed. The reality is, too, that if you are meeting them in their space and they know you care - there is a greater chance of them respecting the boundaries.   Last links, we promise: The Argument Heats Up Esports takes the lead   If you want to get this sent directly to your email to get you this info as soon as we do- check out the link below. In a charming encapsulation of the failings of technology, about an hour of our conversation got cut off through a technical error on Lucio’s part. Fortunately, we have noted the course of the missing conversation, and we were getting tired and really had much more to say anyway, so we will be recording part II of this topic in the near future. Tim Crews is the Chief Scientist and Director of The Land Institute's International Initiative. The Land Institute is a non-profit agricultural research organization based in Salina, Kansas dedicated to developing agroecosystems that capture key functions of natural ecosystems through the integration of perenniality and diversity. Tim has been fascinated for most of his life with how we can improve our food producing ecosystems—agriculture—by studying how people grew food before the fossil fuel era, and also how natural ecosystems function. Tim studied agroecology at UC Santa Cruz, ecosystem ecology in Graduate Studies at Cornell University and in a post-doc at Stanford. Before coming to The Land Institute, he developed an agroecology program at Prescott College in Arizona.Guest LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tim-crews-2080a015/https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-land-institute/Guest Website: https://landinstitute.org/our-work/new-roots-international/https://kernza.orgGuest Social: https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-land-institute/https://www.instagram.com/thelandinstitute/https://www.facebook.com/TheLandInstituteAdditional Resources Mentioned:ARTICLE: Wheat On Repeat: A tantalizing new breed of climate-friendly crops never need replantingEPISODE: Regenerative Agriculture with Tom NewmarkEPISODE: How Regeneration Can Change the Future of Farming & Wine Making with Carlo MondaviEPISODE: How Regenerative Farming Can Solve The Climate Chaos with Mark EasterEPISODE: How Permaculture and Regeneration Can Lead to a Better World with StarhawkEPISODE: How Animal Sanctuaries Can Survive Severe Weather & Flooding with Helbard AlkhassadehBOOK: The Unsettling of America: Culture & Agriculture by Wendell Berry
