Fast Five from Sporty's - aviation podcast for pilots, by pilots
Finding a replacement for 100LL has been a "galactically slow train wreck," according to longtime aviation journalist Paul Bertorelli. In his famously blunt way, he explains what's going on with GAMI's unleaded fuel candidate, when you might be able to pump some of it, and why he thinks the FAA has dropped the ball. He also speculates on the future of electric airplanes following Textron's purchase of Pipistrel, plus what he thinks of the latest eVTOL concepts from Joby and Archer. In the rapid-fire "Ready to Copy" segment, Paul comments on everything from the Cirrus parachute to whether the Air Force has seen alien spacecraft. If you know Paul's work, you know he doesn't lack opinions, but he always backs it up with facts learned from a long career of covering aviation. This week in airplane news, a 737 has crashed claiming the lives of 132 people, RedBull pilots to attempt a mid-air plane swap, Embraer has announced a training program, and Textron will be purchasing Pipistrel. A 737-800 operated by China Eastern crashed on Monday. The aircraft was carrying 132 people. Currently, there are no survivors. ADS-B tracks of the 737 show that the airplane was in the cruise phase of flight and lost nearly 30,000' of altitude in 3 minutes. The aircraft was delivered to China Eastern by Boeing in 2015. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/china-plane-crash-eastern-airlines-boeing-737-guangxi-wuzhou-guangzhou/ Two red bull pilots will attempt to jump out of their planes and into the others where they will regain control and fly the other's plane This stunt is sponsored by Redbull and will use a pair of C182s with custom air breaks. We support design engineers and make lightning protection easy. You're listening to the struck podcast. I'm Dan Blewett. 0:18I'm Allen Hall. 0:19And here on strike we talk about everything aviation, aerospace engineering and lightning protection. Alright, welcome back to the struck aerospace engineering podcast. I'm your co host, Dan Blewett. On today's show, lots to cover a lot of interesting news in the cycle this week. Number one, and we'll chat about Southwest. There's just way too many flight attendants getting getting punched in the face. So we got a we got a chat about it. EVTOL. Startup Archer is seeking to dismiss the trade secrets lawsuit filed by whisk but that doesn't look like it's going anywhere. That seems like it's getting only increasingly messy. We'll talk about mighty fly, which has been cleared to start autonomous cargo drone service. They've gotten some some clearance from the FAA, which will be cool. And then in our engineering Simon was about pipistrel. They've a light sport aircraft, they got an electric motor and about an hour of flight time with an hour charge time. So pretty cool. Some rough news for by aerospace, their battery supplier oxes energy is facing bankruptcy. So we'll talk about the implications there. And then our EVTOL. Segment lots of interesting stuff going on there. We'll talk about some certification issues, which we've talked a bunch about in the past ehang is unveiling a longer range design, and Kel akona has thrown out a 40 passenger concept, which seems straight out of science fiction at this point. And we'll talk a little bit about that as well as some price controls. So start with Southwest isn't really sad Southwest is calling off plans. Well, the plans to sell alcohol in the plains does not make me sad I I'm neutral to it. But there's just been a lot of incidences with unruly passengers. And more recently, Southwest flight attendant was punched in the face loss of teeth. And I mean, things are getting are getting rough. What do you attribute this to? 2:18Alcohol, alcohol, people being upset about masks, reconnecting with the rest of society after being disconnected for a year, all those all those things are playing into it. I recently flew to Las Vegas and I was I kind of like flying to Las Vegas, because it's just it's different places a little more activity. Most airports, the only place I guess there's more places with slot machines. There's a couple places with slot machines in the country. But that has to have the most. And the amount of alcohol there is says hi right You mean that people can leave in the casino gonna go home? For the most part and I think you see it in places where people have been partying in Florida had a rash of it. Some of the islands had a rash of it. I think that's that's just a big problem with alcohol. People being upset about mass people being overly sensitive about stuff and flight attendants worried about their well being which they have every right to it for a two hour flight. You're going to get to a fistfight and punch somebody punch a flight attendant,

Ivo Boscarol is the founder and driving force behind Pipistrel, a leading player in the field of electric aircraft manufacturing. In this episode of the podcast we review Ivo’s story, from making gliders in Slovenia more than three decades ago, its push into electric aviation way before it was fashionable, the many records, awards and milestones achieved along the way as well as the ambitious growth plans of this family-owned aircraft maker…
Cyclogyro propulsion for UAM, holographic particle detection, Singapore UAV licensing, Pipistrel autonomous heavy lift UAV, EU to patrol the Med, offshore wind farm maintenance with autonomous drones, drone seeding to save the Koala.
This week I speak to Ivo Boscarol, the founder of PipistrelPipistrel are primarily focused on the ultralight aircraft market. Their aircraft are incredibly efficient and as a result are ideal for flight training schools. Pipistrel are also the only aircraft manufacturer to build & fly a certified electric aircraft. In this episode we talk about:- How Ivo started Pipistrel?- Why Pipistrel started producing aircraft instead of microlights?- How Pipistrel have been able to grow without investment.- Electric aircraftEmail: nicheaviationpodcast@gmail.com Links:https://www.pipistrel-aircraft.com/
STRUCK: An Aerospace Engineering & Lightning Protection Show
In this episode we discuss Boeing 787 tail fin safety issues that appear to be related to shimming. The Boeing 737 Max also went through EASA testing, and a bit of it is beginning to feel politically charged...the Pipistrel Nuuva V300 is a potentially game-changing cargo EVTOL aircraft that could be delivering cargo to remote locations that were previously accessible only by helicopter. Lastly, we dive into the technology behind Chevrons, serrations cut into the trailing edges of jet engine nacelles and nozzles that reduce noise. Aviation, aerospace engineering, and lightening protection. All right, welcome back. This is the struck podcast episode 26. I am your cohost Dan Blewett and I'm joined here. Remotely with our lighting protection expert. Allen Hall, Allen, how are you? Allen Hall: Hey, great. Dan, boy--another troubling week for Boeing with the seven 87 on the engineering side of all things, uh, is just the hits. Keep on coming there. It's gotta stop at some point. Don't you think? Dan: You think so it's like spreading amongst their fleet now. So in today's show, we're going to start with some of the 737 max testing. So Yas has been testing them and we'll talk about. What they, uh, what they're doing and how it's going. Um, and our engineering segment where we're talking about Boeing 787 issues. So the Dreamliners got some vertical fin safety issues. Uh, it sounds like shim problems, so yikes and other potential nightmare, I guess, for right now. Um, also we're going to chat a little bit about chevrons and their use in reducing, uh, engine noise. Cause obviously jet engines are like the. Most intensely loud things on the planet. So every effort to reduce that as important, even a couple of decibels. And then lastly, in our electric tech session, we'll talk about, uh, PIPA stroll. And one of their new cargo planes that they're hoping can really take off. Uh, no pun intended. The Nuuva V300 is they're hoping can tackle, uh, the helicopter market and replace them where, you know, we've got to ship cargo out to an oil rig, or we got to ship it out. So some other place where helicopters traditionally, the only place that can get there, but these EVTOLs are going to be coming for that market. So I know you, um, Are a proponent of getting away from helicopters, which are many respects. Do you think more difficult to maintain and have some pretty spectacular failures when they do fail? Which is scary. So, anyway, so let's talk with, uh, let's talk first about the 737 max. So Yas has been testing it. How has it been going? Allen Hall: 737 flight testing concluded up in Vancouver, British Columbia, uh, just recently with, um, looked like there was multiple certification authorities, uh, participating in that, uh, EASA, obviously transport Canada would have been there and it sounds like the Brazilians were there too. So there is. A lot of eyeballs on the 737, the, the flight Teske, uh, would be a low risk thing at this point. So there has been at least listened to the news. Reports has been no unexpected outcome of that. Boeing would have had been flying at any way. And check in to make sure that the angle of attack sensors and all the, um, all the sort of the flight management, uh, difficulties that they had would have, would have been taken care of. So it's, it's a check in the box, but also to, to, uh, have some external eyes watching what happens in the cockpit and see how pilots respond to stuff. So, um, that's a good checkpoint to have done. The next step though, is probably the most important,

Ivo Boscarol is quite an inspiration. He looks at fine detail in design and construction in a way that most would not bother. Mind you that’s why he been making planes that few other manufacturers could aspire to and doing it for so long. This is a great journey through the stories of Ivo Boscarol’s background and some of the things he did on the way to success. And you can see why no one else in the world can currently produce a production electric plane and he’s been doing it for 11 years! You’ll love the music too!
Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Wednesday 20th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. CORRECTION: NORWAY'S ELECTRIC PLANE TOOK OFF First of all I can't begin without sorting out my mistake yesterday because I’m an idiot. And I need to learn which day of the week is Monday. On yesterday's show I talked with you about Norway’s electric plane taking off next Monday. Think again genius. It took off last Monday. Reuters reports: "Transport Minister Ketil Solvik-Olsen and Dag Falk-Petersen, head of state-run Avinor which runs most of Norway’s airports, took a few minutes’ flight around Oslo airport in an Alpha Electro G2 plane, built by Pipistrel in Slovenia. "Norway aims to be 100 percent electric by 2040 for all short-haul flights. Avinor, which is responsible for the country's 44 airports, has bought the electric aircraft used Monday. The operator plans to launch a tender offer to test a commercial route flown with a small electric plane with 19 seats, starting in 2025." https://phys.org/news/2018-06-peek-future-electric-plane-cruises.html SMALL FIRE, ELON ASKS STAFF TO REMAIN VIGILIANT IN THE FACE OF SABOTAGE Tesla said in an email that on Sunday night there had been a "Smouldering in an air filter in the welding area of the body line. The smouldering was extinguished in a matter of seconds. There were no injuries or significant equipment damage, and production is back online." The company did not specify the location of the fire, which Reuters was unable to independently confirm. And then came the really big news about sabotage. "I was dismayed to learn this weekend about a Tesla employee who had conducted quite extensive and damaging sabotage to our operations. This included making direct code changes to the Tesla Manufacturing Operating System under false usernames and exporting large amounts of highly sensitive Tesla data to unknown third parties. The full extent of his actions are not yet clear, but what he has admitted to so far is pretty bad. His stated motivation is that he wanted a promotion that he did not receive. In light of these actions, not promoting him was definitely the right move. As you know, there are a long list of organizations that want Tesla to die. These include Wall Street short-sellers, who have already lost billions of dollars and stand to lose a lot more. Then there are the oil & gas companies, the wealthiest industry in the world — they don't love the idea of Tesla advancing the progress of solar power & electric cars. Don't want to blow your mind, but rumor has it that those companies are sometimes not super nice. Then there are the multitude of big gas/diesel car company competitors. If they're willing to cheat so much about emissions, maybe they're willing to cheat in other ways? Please be extremely vigilant, particularly over the next few weeks as we ramp up the production rate to 5k/week. This is when outside forces have the strongest motivation to stop us. Looking forward to having a great week with you as we charge up the super exciting ramp to 5000 Model 3 cars per week!" 2019 MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV WLTP-RATED 45 KILOMETERS OF ELECTRIC RANGE AutoEvolution is one of a few outlets today reporting on the updated Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV: "A significant update over the previous model year, the Outlander PHEV tops at 135 km/h (84 mph) in all-electric mode compared to the old version’s 125 km/h (78 mph). But being a plug-in hybrid, it’s best to drive the mid-size utility vehicle at lower speeds in order to maximize the efficiency of the drivetrain. In addition to the mechanical improvements, electric range also goes up to 45 kilometres (28 miles) on WLTP." The battery gets a bump to 19.5kWh. WHY GHOSN'S RENAULT PAYCHECK DEPENDS ON EV SALES Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn has a new incentive to promote development and sales of electric vehicles: A significant part of his pay now depends on it." according to AutoNews.com: "Under the new pay plan, 30 percent of Ghosn's long-term incentives depend on electric-vehicle sales (shareholder return, free cash flow and alliance platform transition, another new category, make up the rest). An increase of 5 percent over internal forecasts will earn him the full 30 percent, but if sales meet targets, he will get only 21 percent." "last year the company sold 36,000 all-electric vehicles, including about 32,000 Zoe compact hatchbacks (the remainder were almost all Kangoo small vans). That was an increase of about 10,000 from 2016." HOW BIG WILL THE BATTERY BOOM GET? TRY $548 BILLION, BNEF SAYS "Batteries will attract $548 billion in investments by 2050 as costs fall and homes and businesses push to use more clean energy" according to Mark Chediak at Bloomberg.com: "That’s one of the conclusions of the New Energy Outlook released Tuesday by analysts at Bloomberg New Energy Finance. Batteries will become increasingly viable on the grid as demand for electric cars spurs manufacturing of lithium-ion systems, driving down prices. Batteries will allow more solar and wind to meet demand -- even when the sun isn’t shining or wind isn’t blowing, helping end the era of fossil fuel dominance on the grid by mid-century, BNEF said. Battery prices are expected to fall to $70 a kilowatt-hour by 2030, down 67 percent from today, according to the report. BNEF expects 1,288 gigawatts of new batteries to be commissioned by 2050." SMART CHARGING COULD DELIVER EVS A DECADE EARLIER "Smart charging of electric vehicles (EVs) could cut the cost of integration into the UK power system by over £1 billion compared to standard charging, according to a new report that also found running an EV could be ten times cheaper than a conventional car." on CurrentNews.co.uk: "On top of the financial advantages to grid operators, Vivid Economics also argues such action would have a direct benefit to consumers, who could save substantial amounts on their annual car bill." The report says: "“The smartness of the transition to electric vehicles will be the main factor determining how cost effective the transition is, not the speed of the transition" One the big unknowns when it comes to modelling the grid is how much we'll be using Vehicle 2 Grid on our EVs. OFF GRID ENERGY CEO HIGHLIGHTS IMPORTANCE OF BATTERY STORAGE Danny Jones is the founder and CEO of Off Grid Energy and has stressed the importance of battery storage and smart charging systems as the take up of electric vehicles. He says: "The benefits of deploying these systems are manifold and are absolutely necessary to prevent a delay in EV deployment because of the cost and lead-in times to reinforce the electricity network at substations, not to mention they can start working right away with minimal installation time needed." CHRISTCHURCH AIRPORT LEADING THE CHARGE TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES "Christchurch Airport is the first business in the South Island to sign up to a global initiative, EV100, committing to transitioning its vehicle fleet to 100% electric." "The airport already has eight electric vehicles (EVs) so its fleet is currently 40% electric. It also hosts Yoogo an EV sharing scheme for community use. EV100 is an initiative of The Climate Group, an international not-for-profit based in London, New Delhi and New York, with the mission of accelerating climate action. EV100 members commit to becoming 100% electric by 2030." COMMUNITY Youtube comments.
