This week we're excited to present a conversation from this year's edition of New Directors/New Films with Familiar Touch director Sarah Friedland and cast members Kathleen Chalfant, Carolyn Michelle, and H. Jon Benjamin. This conversation was moderated by New Directors/New Films co-chair Dan Sullivan. Presented by The Museum of Modern Art and Film at Lincoln Center, the 54th edition of New Directors/New Films (ND/NF) takes place through April 13, and has, since 1972, showcased new and emerging filmmakers whose distinctive visions and risk-taking works highlight the vitality and potential of cinema. The Opening Night selection of this year's festival, Familiar Touch is about an octogenarian named Ruth (played by Kathleen Chalfant) who has been living independently, but cracks have started to emerge: toast is placed to dry in the dish rack, confusion rests on her face, the dead are spoken of in present tense while the living (such as a son right before her) go entirely unrecognized. Her entrance into an assisted-living facility begins the strange, transcendent journey that is Familiar Touch, Sarah Friedland's feature debut, which earned three awards at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, including the Lion of the Future, Best Director, and Best Actress for Chalfant's astonishing turn. Friedland builds her drama through sharp honesty, and tough as its material may be, few films are so tonally flexible, so able to turn on a dime: stray moments of tenderness, humility, even absurdity poke through, with a love and care for Ruth shown by characters and creators alike. Familiar Touch portends the arrival of major directorial talent and we were honored to have it as the opening night selection of the 54th edition of New Directors/New Films. Familiar Touch will open in select theaters beginning June 20th, courtesy of Music Box Films.

This weeks guest is special to me as he is my nephew and Godson. In his own words: "I am an active seeker, student of life, and on a mission of helping others remember who they are and their innate self worth. It has been my passion of walking alongside others in their own healing and transformation that has brought me to this work. I am a currently a nomadic Young Mens coach currently based in South America. I earned my BS in Psychology from The California Institute of Integrative Studies, and have a certification in Integrative Somatic Trauma Therapy. My work with individuals varies greatly depending on who I am working with and what kind of support they are needing, but you can expect Internal Family Systems (IFS), Somatic Experiencing, compassionate listening, radical self acceptance, and practical tools and exercises in each session." We discussed the view of our current society from a young man's perspective. What is the crisis of "good enough?" What do we really want authentically as young persons? How can parents show up for their kids? And so much more... https://www.blakechalfant.com Young Man's Toolbox Course Enjoy, Dr. M
One of the things I get asked about the most is how parents can help their children grow up to be healthy adults. How do you set your kids up to naturally slide into their Adult Chair, while they are still literally children and adolescents? I decided to put myself out there and talk with my son, Blake – who is now a young adult and coaching clients of his own – about his experiences growing up and what he believes is most important in helping kids get into their Adult Chairs. In this vulnerable and authentic conversation, we talk about both of our experiences during Blake's childhood, from the work I had to do around my own triggers and codependency to the delicate dance parents need between boundaries and allowing their children to have experiences and make mistakes that shape them. Blake also shares that most of the young people he works with feel isolated and like they're not enough, leading them to look for external validation. He talks about how, through honesty, safety and unconditional love, parents can help kids navigate the unique cultural challenges of their time and address the most common questions in every human's heart: “Who am I?” “Am I loved?” “Am I enough?” Listen to discover: ● The balance between surrender and boundaries in parenting ● How to encourage your kids to talk to you and open up to you ● Demonstrating unconditional love, even when you have to discipline your kids ● The common thing all young people (and humans) struggle with ● The greatest gift you can give your kids ● How to help your kids feel their emotions ● Some of the unique challenges that kids today are facing, including porn and technology Blake was growing up during my years of private practice and working with The Adult Chair® model, so I think this is a beautiful story of what happens when parents and children are willing to learn and grow together. I'm so proud of who Blake is today, and I hope this encourages you that you don't have to be a “perfect” parent or have “perfect” kids to raise children who become healthy adults – all you need to do is show up with presence, a lot of love and your own Adult Chair. "Most of the time, people really don't want advice, but what you can do is just offer what you have to say without an expectation." - Blake Chalfant "The culture that we're raising kids in today is scary in some ways. And is not healthy." - Blake Chalfant "We have to surrender, but there has to be a balance of boundaries as well." - Michelle Chalfant "There's a very fine line between things that are gonna really come back to bite them in the ass and then your own projections of how you think they should be." - Blake Chalfant "No one feels like they're enough from a very young age, and we spent the rest of our life trying to fill that void with external validation." - Blake Chalfant "I think that's important too: owning your mistake, apologizing, cause you're modeling that for the kid." - Michelle Chalfant "These beautiful children are with you for a reason." - Michelle Chalfant "You can unconditionally love and support your kids while having extremely firm boundaries." - Blake Chalfant LINKS & RESOURCES Blake Chalfant Website https://blakechalfant.com/ Blake Chalfant Instagram https://www.instagram.com/blake.chalfant Blake Chalfant YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@BlakeChalfant11 Summer 2023 Adult Chair® Coaching Certification - Doors Now Open! https://theadultchair.com/certification MORE ADULT CHAIR The Adult Chair® Website https://theadultchair.com The Adult Chair Events https://theadultchair.com/events/ The Adult Chair® Coaching Certification https://theadultchair.com/certification STAY CONNECTED Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/themichellechalfant Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheMichelleChalfant/ The Adult Chair® Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/theadultchair/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/Michellechalfant
Karlie Gusé was 16 years old when she disappeared from her small, isolated neighborhood in Chalfant, California on October 13th, 2018. The night before she went missing, she had gone to a party with friends, where she smoked a substance that put her into a state of panic and paranoia that lasted several hours. The next morning, Karlie seemingly walked away from her home between 5:45 and 7:30am, with nothing except the clothes on her back. Despite numerous searches of the area and countless public pleas for answers over the years, Karlie Gusé is still missing. _________________________ Patreon Request a Case YouTube Channel Goodpods: Leave a review! Los sencillos «Who's Crying Now», «Don't Stop Believin'» y «Open Arms» llegaron al Top 10. Helping, solving problems, and being with people. Since high school my guest this week, Michelle Chalfant, has wanted to help others resolve their issues. Good news for her because she's very good at it. Through her coaching, podcast and business, she's healing the planet. I don't say that lightly. It's because she's training an army of light warriors so that we can all feel and be better. She's really passionate about it too! What has she learned along her journey? Delegate what you're not good at. Stick to the things you're naturally great at. Do the self work (you know… all that fun stuff that makes you so smart, that nobody else can do for you). Self-discovery is a never ending task. Persevere. Without it you will never get where you want to go. Go forward regardless of your failures. Use your intuition, always. Ask yourself what feels right. Your body doesn't lie. Ever! I love what she says about taking the next step. When we're on our journey, all we can ever really do is keep going, by taking one step at a time. She calls this “walking down an illuminated path.” Each step is lit up. It might not be the one you want to take, but it's lit up because it's the one you're supposed to take. This is one of the most beautiful concepts I have heard in my almost 150 episodes. And if you're unsure about what you're good at, ask others. They'll help you notice your gifts. Oh, and mistakes are normal. They are the greatest learning opportunities for your future. I'm so glad I met Michelle. You will be too. More about Michelle: Michelle Chalfant is a licensed therapist, master life coach, author, podcaster and motivational speaker. We live in a world that's both more connected and more disconnected than ever. With things like Zoom, FaceTime, and social media, we can get in touch with others with the click of a button. But we also have an epidemic of loneliness. We scroll by each other without really engaging with each other. Even in our most intimate relationships, we can easily find ourselves co-existing without connecting at the heart level. The busyness of our world will naturally cause us to drift apart from each other without intentional effort, so a few years ago, my husband and I started building small “rituals of connection” into our week. These are moments – like our weekend coffee chats – that we've set aside to be fully present with each other and share more vulnerably, authentically, and from the heart. During one of our recent coffee chats, we had a beautiful conversation about how we can create more connection in our relationships with each other and others, and with Graham's permission, I recorded our conversation to share with you all. In this conversation, we talk about the power of intentional connection, how important true connection is for maintaining trust and happiness in relationships, and how you can build moments of connection into a busy schedule. Graham shares one of his favorite tools to take a conversation deeper and how this tool can help people who might feel threatened by intimacy begin to flex their vulnerability muscles and move into a deeper relationship with their partner. Listen to discover: How you can build rituals of connection into your relationship Exercises to get the conversation flowing and create a deeper connection How to build up your ability to share emotions Ways to encourage your partner to share their emotions more Staying centered even when having a tough conversation The power of masterful listening and responding instead of reacting How to create more safety in your relationships It's so easy to work and live alongside others but never really connect. If you've ever found yourself in a relationship or surrounded by people but still feeling lonely, this is why! But with small, intentional steps, we can totally transform the nature of our relationships and find those soul connections we're all looking for. This episode gives an inside look into how two normal, busy people are practicing this together, and I hope it encourages you to start this journey with the ones you love – friends, family, partners, anyone! "Drop inside and...drop below the chin. Get curious about what's going on in the body." - Michelle Chalfant "If you can't identify [the emotion], just get the sense of what's going on in your body and share that." - Michelle Chalfant "Expressing that is easy for everybody, and it's a great opening to deeper conversations." - Graham Chalfant "If we as humans had ideas about the range of emotions that we can feel, we would say more than, 'I'm mad, sad, glad, afraid or ashamed.'" - Michelle Chalfant "We have so many emotions we can feel, but we're not brought up to feel more emotions than those typical five." - Michelle Chalfant "See if you can't sit down with the person in your life and just touch base with a couple words." - Graham Chalfant "It would be a huge improvement for most couples and people in relationships to touch base once a day or a couple times a week." - Graham Chalfant "We're getting in the habit of exchanging energy in this way." - Michelle Chalfant "You want to always own your experience...that is a much more open way of inviting in that other person to discuss it versus putting that person in defense." - Michelle Chalfant "Swooping in and fixing when someone feels bad is the worst thing that you can do for a relationship." - Michelle Chalfant LINKS & RESOURCES Share Your Love: Review The Adult Chair® Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-adult-chair/id941317634?mt=2&ign-mpt=uo%3D4 MORE ADULT CHAIR The Adult Chair® Website https://theadultchair.com The Adult Chair® Membership https://theadultchair.com/membership/ The Adult Chair® Events https://theadultchair.com/events/ The Adult Chair® Coaching Certification https://theadultchair.com/certification STAY CONNECTED Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/themichellechalfant Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheMichelleChalfant/ The Adult Chair® Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/theadultchair/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/Michellechalfant
Anyone who knows me knows I LOVE deep conversation, and in this show, I'm letting you in on a beautiful conversation I had with my husband during one of our weekly coffee chats. This was totally unplanned, but as our chat turned into a conversation about the soul, connection and spiritual practice, I felt such important information coming through and hit “record” so all of you could join us in thinking about how to live a more grounded and loving life. As humans, most of us live from the place of ego. We stay busy to push down our feelings of loneliness and separateness and miss the presence of something bigger that's in front of us at all times. When we connect into this deeper part of self, we find comfort, inspiration, ideas and unconditional love. So, how do we do this? I believe it's through a “soul practice” of stillness. Stillness is different from meditation, which is quieting the mind to observe our thoughts. Stillness, on the other hand, is stopping all the “doing” and chatter of life and tuning into the deeper parts of our being – our soul. While this might seem like something reserved for the monks or Zen masters, we can ALL make this a part of life – without quitting our jobs, skirting our responsibilities or even really changing our schedule. In this episode, I share what my soul practice looks like and how I work stillness into my day, one minute at a time. Listen to discover: Steps to connect with your soul Why even meditation can be driven by the ego How to integrate “micro-moments” of stillness into your day The importance of stopping the constant "doing" and instead just "being" The source of inspiration and comfort How to live a more heart-centered life connected to something bigger True stillness is not ego-driven or another task to cross off our list. It's letting go and just “being” so that something more can come in. When you get to the end of this episode, I challenge you to sit in stillness for just one minute (and I literally mean 60 seconds!) and make space for your soul. It's the place I'm striving to live from more and more each day. “The soul is never not with us. The human body is a garage for the soul.” - Michelle Chalfant “The ideas come when I sit in these moments of stillness.” - Michelle Chalfant “For me at least, and I think many other people, the meditation feels like more doing. So, even though it's quieting the mind, you're doing something.” - Graham Chalfant “Micro-moments of stillness create relaxation in the nervous system.” - Michelle Chalfant “One of the fastest ways to slow yourself down is to slow your breath down.” - Michelle Chalfant “The revolutionary part is that this is the “‘not doing.'” - Graham Chalfant “When sitting in stillness, we are able to connect with that thing that we all have come from.” - Michelle Chalfant “If you'd stop doing and stop running so far ahead, the comfort's right here.” - Graham Chalfant "We're looking for that connection home again, and home is right inside of all of us." - Michelle Chalfant LINKS & RESOURCES The Adult Chair® Membership (May Theme: How to stop negative thinking) https://theadultchair.com/membership/ MORE ADULT CHAIR The Adult Chair® Website https://theadultchair.com The Adult Chair® Membership https://theadultchair.com/membership/ The Adult Chair® Events https://theadultchair.com/events/ The Adult Chair® Coaching Certification https://theadultchair.com/certification STAY CONNECTED Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/michelle.chalfant Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheMichelleChalfantCo/ The Adult Chair® Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/theadultchair/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/Michellechalfant
Nursing home providers seeking protection from lawsuits and financial liability related to the care they've provided during the pandemic are largely dependent on the federal PREP Act, especially now that many state shield laws are expiring. But a series of legal challenges has led to a back-and-forth on the act's ability to shield operators from all claims. That has also created jurisdictional tussles that may ultimately be decided by the Supreme Court. In this episode, attorney Drew Graham and national COVID-19 claims coordinator Olga Kats-Chalfant discuss the challenges and the act's potential fate. With some 700 cases hanging in the balance, Kats-Chalfant says the few that have been decided so far are "just a drop in the bucket." Who decides the rest - and where - will be an important development for providers to watch, Graham tells moderator Kimberly Marselas. Follow us on Twitter: @mcknightsltcn

I visited with American actor Kathleen Chalfant back when we first hunkered down due to COVID19 for our Hunkered Down Podcast. At the time, I expressed my gratitude to Joel Bernstein for inviting Ms. Chalfant to the podcast. A celebrated and honored stage, film and television actor, Ms Chalfont debuted on Broadway in Dance With Me followed by M. Butterfly. She has won numerous awards for her varied, powerful performances – in original Broadway productions. In Wit she played a scholar battling cancer – in Tony Kushner's Angels in America, she played several roles including Hannah Pitt and Ethel Rosenberg.I am not going to get into her extensive film and television work. Finally, in addition to the thrill of meeting this great actress, Kathleen was a fun and generous person to talk with. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

You guys...do I have a special episode for you this week or what. I was out in Portland visiting my son, Blake, when we had the most beautiful moment of authentic communication between us. With Blake's permission, I flipped on my microphone, and we're bringing you the first ever podcast with one of my kids on it! Blake is only 21, but I'm blown away by his wisdom and the healthy adult he is becoming. In the story we're sharing with you today, Blake was actually the one who recognized when his ego got triggered and who initiated the communication between us, and I'd be lying if I said mom didn't tear up a little over here! The moment we experienced together led us to a deep discussion about how the ego shows up in our lives, the peace that comes from authentic living, how we can communicate more authentically with the people in our lives, how to receive authentic communication and how essential it is to make sure we're coming from a place of love as we do this work. Listen to discover: How authentic communication deepens connection How the ego keeps us stuck in our defenses Why trying to be right all the time kills connection How to create safety in relationships How to respond when someone doesn't receive our authentic communication well How to begin authentically communicating When you hear the story of what happened, you will recognize that Blake and I didn't experience any conflict. However, Blake was aware of something that didn't feel right internally about a conversation we had and leaned into that awareness to create an opportunity for more authentic communication. There would have been nothing wrong with letting it go and moving on, but that extra step was a chance to build a deeper connection...and that's how we create more meaningful relationships! We step up, we get vulnerable and we share authentically with another. As Blake says, the best part is not just stronger relationships, but also that sense of alignment with ourselves and knowing we're showing up how we want to show up for others...as our authentic selves! “The ego is the part of us that creates separation.” - Michelle Chalfant “You can't be right (all the time) and have a deep connection with other human beings.” - Michelle Chalfant “When you're the hero of your story, it doesn't matter what other people are saying. It matters how you're showing up for them.” - Blake Chalfant “Whether we agree with another person who is communicating with us or setting a boundary with us, how we receive that and express back is so key to deepening that relationship and creating safety in that relationship.” - Michelle Chalfant “We automatically defend as humans unless we have awareness.” - Michelle Chalfant “It just comes back to everything you do coming from the container of love.” - Blake Chalfant LINKS & RESOURCES Episode #283: Deeper Connections Through Vulnerability https://theadultchair.com/podcasts/283/ 30-Day Journaling Challenge - Sign Up Now (starts November 1) https://theadultchair.com/30days/ P&G Hair Food https://hairfood.com/ Or find at Bed Bath & Beyond, Amazon, Target or Walmart MORE ADULT CHAIR The Adult Chair® Website https://theadultchair.com The Adult Chair® Membership https://theadultchair.com/membership/ The Adult Chair® Workshop https://theadultchair.com/events/ The Adult Chair® Coaching Certification https://theadultchair.com/certification TAC Circles® https://theadultchair.com/taccircles/ STAY CONNECTED Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/michelle.chalfant Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheMichelleChalfantCo/ The Adult Chair® Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/theadultchair/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/Michellechalfant
Welcome back folks! Today's episode features a born and raised local business owner! My guest is Mike Chalfant- Owner of Benders Sports Bar in Fells Point. Mike is a lifelong resident of the city. Listen as we talk about his upbringing, his inspiration for naming his establishment, and how he managed to stay in business during the ongoing pandemic. Mike is one of the most genuine and kindhearted people I've ever had the pleasure of interviewing. His passion for his neighborhood and fellow businesses is incredible.
16-year-old Karlie Guse disappeared from her Chalfant, CA home in October 2018. She had just moved in with her father and stepmother a couple of months prior to her disappearance. Karlie's stepmother, Melissa Guse, claims that she woke up to find Karlie gone early on October 13th. But, she has told differing stories to different outlets leading many, including Karlie's mother, Lindsay, to suspect that there is more to the story. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss the disappearance of Karlie Guse. It has been reported that Karlie was acting strangely the night before she disappeared. Three different eyewitnesses claim to have seen Karlie walking near a highway clutching a piece of paper in her hand on the morning she disappeared. The police conducted searches but the area is fairly remote and it's not known how far the searches extended. There are a lot of rumors surrounding this case and many people question whether those involved have told the truth, or at the very least, the full extent of what they know. Everyone wants connection — we're hardwired for it as humans! But we can only connect as deeply with others as we've connected with ourselves. Strong relationships start by going within, feeling our emotions and being willing to open up and share with our partners. On this week's podcast, I have a very, very special guest...my husband! We're talking with you today together and sharing some very personal details about our marriage and how feeling emotions has changed our relationship for the better. Graham comes from a background where emotions weren't expressed, and I come from an Italian family that was very expressive. For so many years, we both saw the other as not emotional enough or too emotional. Learning to feel, honor and share our emotions has deepened our connection so much and been so transformational for us. In this episode, Graham shares what helped him learn to process his emotions, how that's changed his response to different situations and the changes we've both seen in our relationship. Listen to discover: How relationships can help us overcome childhood issues when we approach them with consciousness The importance of raw, open communication in a relationship Somatic processing and the power of feeling emotions in the body Navigating anger and stress in a relationship How feeling emotions deepens intimacy (both emotional and physical) By the way, Graham did all of this work on his own (no bonus points for having a spouse who is a therapist and coach!). Which means YOU can do this too! We're all born with the ability to feel our emotions, but we have to tune in with intention instead of running away from them. When we do, we'll find they stop coming out sideways and are instead an invitation into deeper connection with others. “When we engage in a relationship with another human being, our childhood issues are going to rear up. That person is here to help us work through those childhood issues.” - Michelle Chalfant “Once our youngest child left the house, then it all slowed down and it became more apparent to me that I needed to figure out this ‘feeling' thing.” - Graham Chalfant “I learned I could just sit with it and in 30 seconds, that heaviness would literally melt away.” - Graham Chalfant “Everybody has the ability to feel emotions. At some point along our life journey, we turn them off and turn them down.” - Michelle Chalfant “When you feel an emotion without building a story around it, the emotion goes through you in 90 seconds.” - Michelle Chalfant Resources Episode #42: Inviting Your Relationship into The Adult Chair with Michelle and Graham Chalfant https://theadultchair.com/podcasts/42-inviting-your-relationship-into-the-adult-chair-with-michelle-and-graham-chalfant/ Episode #49: Am I a Fraud? I did not know Jim Prigoff well but was delighted to be able to ask him a few questions during the Urban Creativity Conference in 2020, when he participated in an on-line Q&A session together with Henry Chalfant and Susan Farell. Jim answered candidly and made quite a lively impression in spite of his respectable age. We stayed in touch after the conference via e-mail, discussing the origins and trajectory of style writing and were plannning an audio interview for my podcast. That was, sadly, never to be recorded but he did humbly devote the time and effort to type down some lenghty and super interesting answers to some of the many questions I had. I was planning to try and get it published as an article sometime down the line but learning of Jims recent passing, it feels more appropriate to make it available here, for free and as a tribute to his work. This interview was conducted on the 20:th July 2020. I am very happy that I got the chance to thank the man for producing works as Spraycan Art. A book that left an immense imprint on me, and so many other kids in the 80´ies with over 250 000 sold (racked?) units. It was tremendously inspiring to discuss various graffiti-related topics with a man of such insights and passion for art and culture As a graffiti writer and chronicler: I salute you Mr Prigoff! SGP: To graffiti-aficionados, I would claim you became a household name in conjunction with the release of the book Spraycan Art. By then, in 1987, you were 60 years of age. I would like to know what you did before this. What was your childhood like and what was your relation to art and expressions in the public space before graffiti came along? Jim: My life history was that of a middle- class child growing up in suburban NY. There was every expectation that I would go to college, get a good job, and have a successful business career. My mother took me to Museums and in general I was a visually oriented person. At age 40, I became interested in tracking and documenting murals and community art particularly as it had political reference. I began to see tags appearing and photographed some. As the art form developed and became more sophisticated, I incorporated it into my mural search wanting to give dignity and respect to this new burgeoning form of art expression. SGP: What are your earliest meetings with, or memories of (style writing)graffiti and what did you make of it? Jim: I remember seeing BIO, BRIM, MED, T-KID TAGS in the Bronx and then some of Keith Haring’s characters in the early 80’s. A Samo here and a Sane there. Going to Freedom’s tunnel on the west side. Tracking Lee, Vulcan, Daze, Crash, Blast, Phase 2, Tracy and so many others. SGP: How did you go about approaching it and learning more about it? Jim: In the early eighties I began to meet some of the writers, particularly on the west coast when I moved in 1981. The TMF crew, TDK crew and TWS, writers that I am still in touch with to this day. Also, many of the writers in LA like Slick, Hex, Chaz, Risk etc. As the writing moved from tags to pieces, I recognized the skill involved and became interested in following its development as well as to give respect and dignity to those creating the art. I watched the writers creating their pieces, talked to them about the culture to understand their motivation, creativity, and how it was becoming such an important part of their lives. I remember inviting the TMF crew to my home in SF. to do an in-depth interview with them. SGP: When did you first cross paths with Henry Chalfant and how did you come to work on the book together? Jim: Tony Silver came to see me when he was working on Style Wars, hoping I would have some ideas for fund raising to help finance the film. He mentioned his film partner, Henry Chalfant and suggested I should meet him when I was next in NYC. When I decided to do a book of how the art came above ground from the NY City subway system, began to appear on walls and handball courts and then move across the country, I wrote and invited Henry to join me. His reply was “My brain is Graffitied out. But let’s do it”. SGP: We recently spoke about the process of selecting what works and cities that were featured in the final product (Listen to the snippet published in this post) Could you speak a bit about the response and critique the book received and any tangible proof of its impact on subsequent travels/interactions the coming years? The first trip to Sweden for example. Jim:The book received an instant positive response world-wide. It was voted one of the 50 best books for layout and design in Britain in 1987. There were many newspaper reviews and received commendation in a NY. Public Library list. Henry was already recognized internationally and with the publishing of Spraycan Art, I became very visible and invited to speak in venues around the world. SGP: Did you at any point feel a responsibility in regards to the amount of criminal damage/defacement that the book inspired? And, without rehashing the old "Art or Crime" debate; how big a part of graffiti do you think the illicit nature of it is/contra the artistic aspect? This could be expanded into a discussion of what happens when graffiti is brought on to canvas and the transition into the field of fine art and museums, certainly. Jim: My chosen role in the movement was that of a photo documenter to preserve the images which often disappeared rapidly, to present the art form to as large an audience as was possible and to be its advocate. Also, to help understand its social context within a capitalist society. There is no question I played a contributing part in the larger picture/puzzle. People are welcome to ascribe whatever they want as to my influence because almost all of the feedback has been very positive. Kids I didn’t even know have told me I saved their lives as they left the gang culture and moved to Graff. Many of their friends left behind were R.I.P. Graffiti moving to Museums and fine art is partially a result of writers getting older, gaining attention, needing to support families etc. But that is just one of the many facets in an ever far reaching development. SGP: With the spreading of style writing now having reached most corners of the world. What are your impressions on how it has evolved in respective geographical areas. I.e I see tendencies of simply imitating classic NY Subway Graffiti, with western letters/words and the same old styles and aesthetics in all parts of the world. It has its charm I suppose but can also feel shallow and bleak somehow. Are there any scenes where you think an exciting adaption and furthering of the artform has taken place? Jim: This question is complex and better answered by the artists themselves. There were so many ways that writers chose to develop style. First, many just copied from the books or had mentors who taught them style. But as time went on, writer explored new imagery and style often became regional. SGP: Having dedicated such a large part of your life to chronicling and collecting graffiti. Why has this movement been so important to you, and perhaps any guesses on the attraction and meaning it has had to so many? In short; what is so great about graffiti? Jim: Graffiti documentation has been part of a much larger interest in tracking painted murals, particularly as they related to community issues, political attitudes and their influence in public visual life. For me it was a way to combine an interest in photography with my political values and then to share my point of view with a larger audience. In addition, it was an adventure, a treasure hunt, as well as a challenge and an opportunity to learn about different cultures as well as interacting with youth. SGP: Our paths crossed recently at an international conference on graffiti and other expressions in the public space. What started as kids scribbling has now not only spawned a worldwide art movement (or is it an extreme sport or something else?) but a whole community of scholars, chroniclers and researchers who analyze and try to understand and explain graffiti. I often times, as an amateur researcher get lost in talking and thinking more about graffiti than actually painting, forgetting why I love it so much until I get to a wall and apply aerosol paint on it. What do you think are the pros and cons of the theoretical, philosophical and academic movement around this phenomenon? As one of the debates at the conference were about; Is it even possible and fruitful at all trying to frame and explain graffiti without ever having practised it? ...and on the other side of that coin. Are the many ex-practitioners in the academic word inclined to be biased when indulging in and publishing research on it? Does graffiti need to be confined and understood by outsiders? Jim: Over the many centuries, art took many forms, shapes and context. Scholars studied each period from ever conceivable point of view. So why not Graffiti which is clearly the most important art form developed in the last 40 years? I presume most of the scholarly work over the years was done by people who never painted themselves. Surely, interview the artists to get some clarity, but the answers will be wide ranged based on the individual, yet often have a similar thread. SGP:What are your hopes or expectations on the future of graffiti? In a society with an inclination leaning more towards a fully draconian and surveilled society. Is graffiti doomed to disappear or could it rather a productive factor such as combating graffiti has been historically? Graffiti on trains saw a style renaissance of sorts when the possible times to stand in a yard shrunk remarkably. Giving birth to new styles. Jim: I don’t really have “hopes or expectations” The art form will continue to develop in many different directions. It is like a tree with branches emerging in many directions. Graffiti in one form or another has been a part of society since the beginning of human life. Probably, it will continue in some form in perpetuity. Paz, Jim Photo taken from the book Spraycan Art. The pharmacist, who is Catholic, has made it clear that dispensing the drugs violates her deeply held beliefs. The pharmacy said if she did not change her position, she would be terminated immediately. The pharmacist did not back down. She has worked for the pharmacy for many years and has always received a religious accommodation to exempt her from dispensing prescriptions that violate her conscience. This year, however, the pharmacy is saying that birth control and morning after pills are “essential” services. Athletes allowed to defend women's sports law A federal district court yesterday granted the motion of two female athletes to intervene in defense of Idaho’s Fairness in Women’s Sports Act, which the American Civil Liberties Union is challenging in court. The lawsuit seeks to dismantle Idaho’s newly enacted law and force female athletes to compete against males who identify as female. Alliance defending freedom attorneys represent the two collegiate athletes, who run track and cross-country at Idaho State University in Pocatello. The two women, Madison Kenyon and Mary Kate Marshall, are long-time athletes, well familiar with the difference in strength and speed between comparably gifted and trained male and female athletes. In its order granting the motion to intervene in Hecox v. Little, the U.S. District Court for the District of Idaho also temporarily halted enforcement of Idaho’s law while the lawsuit against it moves forward. Church wins against state Pastor John Macarthur’s Grace Community Church in California may hold indoor services without legal retaliation for now, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge James Chalfant ruled Friday. California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom has banned indoor religious services along with various types of secular gatherings in 29 counties representing 80 percent of the state’s population in the name of containing the spread of covid-19. Numerous churches have defied the order, including Grace Community Church, Cornerstone Church of Fresno, Destiny Christian Church of Rocklin and Harvest Rock Church Of Pasadena. In Los Angeles, conflict over the order has intensified to the point that Democrat Mayor Eric Garcetti has ordered that power and water be shut off to buildings where gatherings continue taking place. Grace Community Church Sued The State Over The Ban, And Los Angeles County Counter-Sued, but Chalfant sided with Grace, the Associated Press reports. The judge’s ruling allows the church to gather in person for the time being, provided congregants wear masks and socially distance within the building. He set a September date for a hearing on Los Angeles County’s counter-demand for an injunction against the church meeting in person.

Hosts Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas are joined by Treis Hill and Rob Cristofaro, partners-in-crime at Alife, who are on to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the New York City-based lifestyle, street, and skatewear brand. The quick hits start off with Kith’s co-branded apparel capsule in collaboration with Nobu and their dinner event which took place at the world’s most recognized Japanese restaurant (2:48). While Noah was filling up on sushi as a Nobu regular (shout out to Uncle Woody), Jian was knee-deep in work at the office. Treis notes the merging of food with fashion as the cast expresses their mutual love for authentic restaurant merch (4:30). Somehow, discussion of the Snow Peak x New Balance sneakers brings us back to food again — more specifically, food utensils, including the world’s most luxurious spork (8:06). Talk of Burberry’s Nova Check fleece jacket drop leads to Rob and Treis sharing the lack of high fashion pieces in their closets and Alife’s history of collabs (11:10). Rather, the duo emphasizes the importance of finding relevance in co-branding as seen through their work with Foot Locker’s Project Greenhouse (16:13). The initiative focuses on sustainable product design and empowering youth culture through collaboration with mentors. Alife’s multifaceted identity, which includes being a museum, extends their storytelling beyond pure products as seen with their recent partnerships with Brooklyn Museum and The Bronx Museum of the Arts. When the latter held an exhibit for street art photographer Henry Chalfant who produced a body of work referred to as the Bible of graffiti (22:53), Alife injected their contemporary DNA into the collaboration by creating a pop-up retail space selling a capsule featuring Chalfant’s work. In light of their 20th anniversary, Alife is collaborating with Lee Jeans who are also celebrating 130 years in the making (26:00). This leads up to the Question of the Week (QOTW): “What’s your favorite Alife collab?” (29:08) with the hosts giving their takes. The cast wraps up the episode by making the rounds in “What’d You Cop?” Rob got his hands on the iPhone 11 Pro while Treis got a pair of red Chuck 70s. Worlds collide! This week on the show, for the very first time in over three years, Pete and I got to meet face-to-face! Even better than that, sitting together in a hotel lobby/swimming pool in Seattle, Pete and I finally recorded the long-awaited conversation with my husband Graham on communication and inviting the relationship into the Adult Chair when we’re triggered. As it turned out, this was a much broader conversation that we’d intended. Graham is in an interesting position; as someone who has experience with my work at home, and certainly well-versed in using the Adult Chair in our marriage, his insights on how the Adult Chair support him at work with his peers are illuminating (if I do say so myself!). Join us, and share your thoughts! This was a really fun conversation and we’re looking forward to more — how is the Adult Chair supporting you at home and at work? XO, Michelle

Media Nite Radio welcomes to the airwaves Kevin Chalfant. Music fans know Kevin best from his time as lead singer for the uber popular group, Journey for a limited run. Chalfant's first national success came when he joined the group 707 in 1982. With Chalfant on lead vocals, the band enjoyed its biggest hit, "Mega Force", which peaked at #12 on Billboard 's Mainstream Rock chart but soon after they disbanded. In 1984, Chalfant joined the band Steel Breeze. He recorded one album with the band, Heart on the Line, before leaving in 1985. Chalfant later formed The Storm in 1990 with guitarist Josh Ramos and (former) Journey members Ross Valory (bass), Gregg Rolie (keys), and Steve Smith (drums). Journey, a multi-platinum band that was also no stranger to internal conflict, had undergone several personnel changes over the years. As Journey was splintering, The Storm was brewing. Released by Interscope Records in late 1991, The Storm hit the album charts and the band's first single, "I’ve Got A Lot To Learn About Love" surged well into the Top 40 of the Hot 100. Faring even better at Mainstream Rock radio, the single peaked at #6 on the national Billboard charts, and its follow-up, "Show Me The Way" went to #22. That spring, the band went on a major US tour with Bryan Adams and opened for Peter Frampton. When the band was ready to release the second album, the label was emerged in the genre of rap. Therefore, when the album was finally released in 1996, the band was no longer viable. In 1993, Journey came calling but by 1995, Steve Perry decided to return to the band leaving Chalfant out. After some time off, Chalfant put out his first solo album and now is a member of The Voices of Rock. Kevin will be at Wheeling Island Hotel, Casino and Racetrack in West Virginia. Singer/Songwriter Kevin Chalfant is a wonderful talent and a great friend. He has been in many bands (The Storm, 707, Shooting Star, The View, Two Fires, etc.) written songs for others (Cher, etc) and recorded several solo albums. His latest effort is his tribute to his favorite band, Journey. You'll get to hear a bit of it in the beginning and also the very end of the interview - you won't believe how good he nails it. Years ago he sang in my backyard (you'll hear us talk about that party in our interview) and my neighbors were convinced that Journey was playing! Kevin Chalfant is part of the amazing line-up of MelodicRockFest at The Morris Performing Arts Center in South Bend, IN on October 6.
