The Caribbean nation of Haiti is in the grip of gang violence, with armed groups controlling much of the country. The lawlessness came to a head after gangs stormed two jails, freeing thousands of prisoners. Meanwhile Prime Minister Ariel Henry is being prevented from returning after a trip abroad. Luis Fajardo from BBC Monitoring in Miami tells us about the key players in Haiti, and the background to what's happening. The women saving a river A group of women in Bangladesh have been mobilising to save the Moyur river from land grabbers. They have successfully recovered parts of the river and protected them from pollution. Shahnewaj Rocky of BBC Bangla went to meet them. Women running in Iraq Women competitors in a recent 13-kilometre race in the Iraqi city of Basra were banned just days before it took place. Organisers decided to exclude them after comments by Muslim clerics that the participation of women would 'deprive them of their chastity and honour'. Dima Babilie of BBC Arabic has spoken to women who had been training for the race. Filming the Mayor of Freetown When she took office in 2018, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr was the first democratically elected female mayor of Sierra Leone's capital city, Freetown. During her successful re-election campaign last year, she was filmed for a BBC Africa Eye documentary, which set out to follow her environmental work, but became a record of a fiercely contested election, as we hear from Africa Eye's Abdul Brima.Baraye: the protest anthem that Iran has tried to suppress Iranian singer Shervin Hajipour became famous after his song Baraye became widely popular in the country, and went on to win a Grammy award for Best Song for Social Change. He has now received a prison sentence after being charged with "spreading propaganda against the establishment". Beyond watching Hassidim dance in synchronized steps, do Jews dance? Turns out, we embrace a relatively new and lively tradition of choreography through Israeli folk dancing. Dancing happens to also be mentioned in the Torah. One could say it's our duty to dance. Tune in with Chaz Volk, host of Bad Jew, as he interviews Orly Star, teacher and choreographer, on the rich topic of the Jewish heritage of dance! About Orly Star: Orly Star Setareh started dancing at the age of 5. With over 24 years of teaching experience, instructing children and adults of all ages throughout the Los Angeles and the Valley areas, Orly instills a dance program that promotes a passion for Israel and inspires a love of learning. Her charismatic, welcoming nature immediately captivates new dancers and sparks a needed connection to our Jewish community. She infuses a fresh, young & current vibe into every teaching lesson while maintaining the importance of a healthy lifestyle and tradition. She understands that every dancer has a special role in completing our circle. That we hold hands not only in times of celebration but in times of lifting each other up in embrace & support. As Dani Dassa would explain: "We are praying through our feet". Orly has learned from and assisted David Dassa in running the most popular Israeli Dance session in America. She inherited his Wednesday night legacy in June of 2015. She plays a variety of old and new Israeli dances of all decades in her weekly session containing partner, circle and line dances. She believes in connecting all generations through the arts, le-dor va-dor, dancing the same steps in unity. Orly has choreographed some of the most popular Israeli dances that are done all over the world. She introduced hip hop to the world of Israeli dance as a draw for the younger generation to participate. Inspiring and encouraging the teens is the only way to continue our culture through dance! To make it not only survive but thrive and make the dance floor a place they can return to at any age. Orly has taught at several Israeli dance camps and co-directs her own dance weekend called "Camp SheLAnu" with Jason Goldman every President's Day Weekend @ Brandeis. She has been the dance director at several private Jewish schools and synagogues including Abraham Joshua Heschel Day School, Ilan Ramon, Temple Israel of Hollywood, and Valley Beth Shalom. Then, Erwin joins Jian from Los Angeles for an energetic conversation including discussion of his latest project as Musical Director of “The Voice Persia” and his version of the Shervin anthem, “Baraye.” Following that, Behnam joins from Washington DC for a wide-ranging policy discussion that includes the Biden Admin's inaction against the Islamic Republic, the obsession of the U.S. and EU with resuscitating the Nuclear Deal (the JCPOA), and how are to interpret the new bromance between the Iranian regime and…Saudi Arabia(!).

Protest movements have broken out against the oppressive regimes in Iran and China. Young Iranians posted their reasons for rebelling under the hashtag Baraye, meaning “because” and the singer-songwriter Shervin Hajipour compiled many of these reasons into a song of the same title that has become an anthem of the Iranian movement and an inspiration to those fighting for freedom around the world. One line in particular stands out. Young people are rebelling because of their “yeaning for an ordinary life”—for the opportunity to lead lives of the sort many around the world take for granted. By historical standards such “ordinary lives” are extraordinary, and indeed the way of living that freedom fighters long for has not been fully realized, even in the freest and most prosperous societies. It is a way of life that is demanded by human nature, such that the best among us and the best within us yearn for it, often without being able to define it or chart a course towards it. In this talk, Dr. Brook articulates the object of this yearning, discusses how it animates the movements in Iran and China, and draws implications for the fight for freedom in these countries and around the world.Recorded on January 26, 2023 at at Crum Auditorium, University of Texas - Austin, Austin, TX.10:00 Intro10:20 Iranian protest song Baraye12:50 Death of Mahsa Amini starting protests in Iran19:18 Protests in China28:24 Exodus from Cuba, Russia and Venezuela30:04 Price paid by the protesters36:24 Yearning for an Ordinary Life40:34 Why do we have freedom? 44:55 What happened 250 years ago?47:30 Reason, see http://aynrandlexicon.com/lexicon/reason.html49:27 Individualism, see http://aynrandlexicon.com/lexicon/individualism.html 49:55 What is Freedom?, see http://aynrandlexicon.com/lexicon/freedom.html52:32 Enlightenment55:40 Noble cause for freedomLive Questions:59:41 Israeli–Palestinian conflict1:02:29 Western companies doing business in China1:10:48 Western press coverage of those uprisings1:16:37 Fall of the Berlin Wall1:21:44 Silence towards Iran1:22:42 Civil Rights Movement1:28:56 Moral culpability of US1:30:34 Covid lockdowns1:33:21 Self-esteem1:37:10 Is freedom necessary progression of any society?1:41:55 Property rights1:45:21 Way to improve western system1:50:10 Minority neighborhoods1:52:10 How to influence political decisions?1:56:00 OutroShow is Sponsored by Ayn Rand University https://university.aynrand.org/ as well as by https://www.expressvpn.com/yaron & https://www.fountainheadcasts.comJoin this channel to get access to perks:https://www.youtube.com/@YaronBrook/joinLike what you hear? How the Power of Storytelling Is Igniting the Iranian Protests

Moj Mahdara and Dina Nasser-Khadivi speak with BoF's Imran Amed about how creative communities from the Iranian diaspora are participating in the largest civil rights movement in Iran since the revolution in 1979.Background:Protests erupted across Iran in September following the death of Mahsa Amini, who was arrested in Tehran for “improperly” wearing her hijab and then killed at the hands of the so-called morality police. Those protests have now evolved into the largest civil rights movement in Iran since the revolution in 1979 uniting Iranians at home with those in the wider diaspora and igniting outcry around the world and across social media. Looking for a way to bring storytelling to fuel the movement, creative leaders Moj Mahdara and Dina Nasser-Khadivi utilised their network to establish The Iranian Diaspora Collective and @from____iran, an artist-led media collective that amplifies unheard Iranian voices, respectively. From Instagram to physical billboards, the collective has centred Iranian people and maintained the ongoing attention of the West by focusing on human rights. “The only way to move culture is through storytelling,” Mahdara said. This week on The BoF Podcast, BoF's founder and editor-in-chief Imran Amed speaks with Mahdara and Nasser-Khadivi to learn about the work they are doing to help people understand the intersectional solidarity of this movement and activate creative communities to share their stories. Key Insights:Social media has helped spread the word globally of the protests in Iran, helping to unite the Iranian diaspora with Iranians at home, while educating people around the world about what is happening on the ground. “The social media aspect of this movement, the reason why it was so important for me, it was not just about raising awareness, it ended up helping us identify who our allies were,” Nasser-Khadivi said. “And that is what then created an even stronger network.”In order for this movement to be supported internationally, Mahdara believes that recognition is critical. “[The international community] can recognise this,” says Mahdara. “This revolution.”The movement has collectively transformed the once-conversative perception of Iran to include tolerance as motivating progression towards a secular community. “This whole movement preaches tolerance,” says Nasser-Khadivi. “There are covered girls next to girls who are uncovered hugging each other. That's the message. It's tolerance.”Additional Resources: https://www.businessoffashion.com/news/global-markets/iranian-fashion-retailers-pursue-growth-amid-sanctions/https://www.businessoffashion.com/news/global-markets/iranian-fashion-brands-go-upmarket-amid-international-sanctions/ https://www.businessoffashion.com/videos/global-markets/masoud-golsorkhi-hoda-katebi-shirin-vaqar-shiva-vaqar-voices-talk-iran-fashion-industry-operating-underground/ Music credits: Baraye by Shervin Hajipour Hosted on Acast. Join us for the latest episode of All About Change as Hadi Ghaemi, Executive Director of the independent Center for Human Rights in Iran, discusses the reaction of Iranians within Iran and around the world to the death of Mahsa Amini. Women and students are leading this protest movement that doesn't seem to be slowing down. How does it fit into the recent history of protest in Iran, what is different about this wave of protests that Ghaemi calls an “evolution,” and what does it mean for Iranians who live there and in the diaspora?  Hadi Ghaemi is an internationally recognized expert on Iran and human rights. In 2008, he founded the Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI), a leading organization documenting human rights violations in Iran and building international coalitions to support human rights. Born in Iran, Ghaemi came to the United States in 1983 as a student, and later became a professor of physics at CUNY as an expert in nanophysics. His other past work focused international attention on the plight of migrant workers in Dubai, as well as the repression of civil society in Iran.  Please find a transcription of this episode:  https://allaboutchangepodcast.com/podcast-episode/hadi-ghaemi/ ‎See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Shirin's work focuses on the lives and struggles of Iranian women. The protests have been raging for a month, which, as Shirin says, makes them the longest-running demonstrations since the 1979 Islamic revolution. We are in the third week of Iran's uprising.  After last week's episode, I had so many requests from my audience asking "What can we do?". So I reached out to a brilliant Iranian American Scientist who has been an inspiration to many people around the world.  My guest today is Dr. Firouz Naderi. He held many executive positions during his 36 years at NASA's robotic space missions leading to becoiong NASA's program manager for Mars exploration in 2000. He received NASA's Distinguished Service Medal in 2005 which is considered its highest award.  After retiring from his position, he remains an active advocate for the Iranian-American dispora formerly having served on the board of directors of Public Affairs Alliance of Iranian American (PAAIA). I reached out to him to share his thoughts about what is happening in Iran, what are some actionable items listeners can put in practice.  In other news, Shervin Hajipour, the singer of "Baraye" song that I played on the podcast has been released on bond. There is a collective movement to nominate his song for Grammy's under the "best song for social change".  You may submit your vote at https://songforsocialchange.grammy.com  I hope you enjoy this special podcast.  To follow Dr. Firouz Naderi on social media, please do so on Twittter @Firouz_Naderi Consider to keep posting about the political injustices in Iran by sharing hashtags. #Mahsaamini, #Nikashakarami, #iran

From the Watson Institute at Brown University, this is Trending Globally. I'm Dan Richards.  On September 13, 2022, a young Iranian woman named Mahsa Amini was detained by the country's ‘morality police' for improperly wearing her hijab.  Three days later, she was dead. Authorities claimed it was the result of a heart attack, but images of her in the hospital – bruised and bloodied – suggested otherwise.  Those images, along with the government's cover-up surrounding the details of her death, have sparked a protest movement in Iran unlike any the country has seen.  On this bonus episode of Trending Globally, Dan Richards spoke  with anthropologist and Director of the Center for Middle East Studies  Nadje Al-Ali about these protests, and about the unique role gender has come to play in them.  These protests are, and always have been, about much more than hijabs, as Nadje explains. They're part of a much longer story of political resistance in the Middle East. Many of us, especially in the West, would do well to understand that story. Questions? Comments? Check out this article which says:"On September 29, Iran arrested Shervin Hajipour after the release of “For…”, a song inspired by the death of Mahsa Amini, a young Kurdish woman detained for “inappropriate attire” on Sept. 13, 2022. Her death three days later sparked nationwide protests for weeks. The lyrics of “Baraye”—or “For…” or “Because of…” in Persian—were pulled from phases used in Twitter posts about Amini and the public outcry. Hajipour's song on Instagram quickly went viral with 40 million views in two days. It became the anthem, or soundtrack of the protests, sung by defiant schoolgirls, blared on car radios, and picked up by sympathy protestors in foreign capitals."Today, we read and break down the lyrics to BARAYE ("For Freedom").Listen to the song on SpotifyFollow Shervin on SpotifyCOME TO THE JOY ACTIVATION on October 13My Links:WebsiteInstagramMusic YoutubeBalkan Folkdance YoutubeSpotifyFacebookJoin the next free zoom concert!Support the show
