The David Alliance
4 Ways to overcome Bitterness

The David Alliance

Garth Heckman The David Alliance  TDAgiantSlayer@Gmail.com    James 3 Neither bitter water and sweet water should come out of your mouth as a believer.   More frequently, "πικρός" is employed metaphorically to describe a state of emotional or spiritual bitterness. This can refer to feelings of resentment, anger, or harshness that can take root in a person's heart. The New Testament warns against allowing such bitterness to grow, as it can lead to division and strife within the community of believers.         How do we deal with Bitterness?     - 1 Get rid of it. Eph. 4:32 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. 32 Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.   Get rid of GK - to raise up your voice to deal with it.    YOU HAVE THE POWER OF YOUR OWN VOICE.  SPEAK IT OUT!       - 2 GO TO THE PERSON: Aaron stood before Moses. Peter Stood before Jesus.       - 3 Immediately deal with the root   Heb. 12:15  Deal with the root   This verse goes back to Deut. 29:18 which speaks of roots growing and causing a coldness of heart toward God.        - 4 Finally Don't react - Respond David Rostad - Bulls - overreacting, yelling or pushing the bulls would only cause greater injury to yourself.    The hound of heaven - Blue Heeler dog "Hound of Heaven" comes from the famous poem of the same name by Francis Thompson, published in 1893.       Harboring resentment, bitterness, anger, unforgiveness steals the joy of our salvation…  HOW?  Holding on to these is unbelief in what God has done for you -      -   forgive as God has forgiven you!       -  And what he can do through you, He can forgive through you.      -  He has the power to forgive anything!      Helmut Thelike - don't let misplaced resentment misplace you.  In a bitter cold winter nothing can grow A bitter cold heart is the same!

“I don't want a valuable life lesson, I just want an ice cream.” Those are the immortal words spoken by Bluey, beloved Blue Heeler puppy from Australia. We can all relate, but when it comes to Australian/American cross-border financial planning, a life lesson might be what you need. You can have an ice cream afterwards. To deliver the lesson, Richard is joined by Ashley Murphy, founder of Arete Wealth Strategists and the Global Financial Planning Institute. Ashley shares his journey from corporate finance to starting his own firm and specializing in cross-border financial planning for Australians and Americans. Many expats, especially Australians moving to the US, fail to understand the long-term implications of their immigration status on their financial planning. There are unique tax advantages available to those who plan their entry and exit from the US carefully, but many miss out on these benefits because they don't seek advice early enough. Many Australians in the US, particularly those on temporary visas, often unknowingly commit to green cards or permanent residency without realizing the financial consequences. For instance, long-term US residents may face an "exit tax" if they leave the country or miss out on tax benefits available only to temporary visa holders.Bluey is a story of success; an Australian who cracked the US market. Set yourself up for the same success with the lessons learned in this episode. Always an Expat is affiliated with Plan First Wealth LLC, an SEC registered investment advisor. In this episode, we explore the textured life and inspirations of Chris Pitman, a South Australian actor and playwright. Chris discusses the upcoming season of his one-man show "Shore Break," at the Adelaide Festival Centre. The play, inspired by his encounters with societal "isolates" along the coast, delves into the poignant narratives of those living on the edges of society. Chris reflects on his Adelaide roots, his formative years by the beach, and the pivotal moments that shaped his artistic journey. He recounts his acting break in Neil Armfield's "Cloudstreet" and shares insights from his extensive career, including working with actors like Max Cullen. The episode kicks off with the SA Drink of the Week, celebrating the Beresford Emblem Fiano 2023, a world-class wine that has clinched a 95-point Gold medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards. Our guest wine taster is John Gledhill of Gledhill Vignerons. In our Musical Pilgrimage, we feature Darkness & Gold by My Chérie, a song that mirrors the introspective themes of Chris's play, exploring the facades we present and the hidden struggles within. As we discuss with our guest wine taster, John Gledhill of Gledhill Vignerons, this wine earned the same score as some of the country's best $100 white wines yet sells for just $25; a feat John says is not unheard of but very special when it happens at such shows. In the discussion, we quote head winemaker, Chris Dix, discussing the remarkable growth of Fiano in McLaren Vale, since the Lloyd family planted the first Fiano vine 22 years ago. The Beresford Emblem Fiano 2023 is available through the Beresford cellar door - the Beresford Tasting Pavilion in McLaren Vale. 00:15:45 Chris Pitman Brink Productions will soon be presenting, Shore Break, as part of State Theatre's Stateside season in the Space Theatre at the Adelaide Festival Centre from 3 – 7 September. I'm told this play is an interesting one man show written and performed by Chris Pitman, about a man on the outskirts of society who is finding his way back. To make this play possible, Chris did some detailed research in campgrounds in the regions, along the coast talking to a number of outliers / “isolates” about their stories, and how they found themselves in their situations. It is from these stories that he derived inspiration for his play. You grew up in Adelaide, attracted to the beach. Can you start by painting a picture of Adelaide and South Australia as you remembered it back then? Anything you miss, anything you're glad has changed? Did you hang out with lots of friends, or was there an essence of the “isolate” in you back then? I note that you are a poster child for Steve Jobs' famous quip – Just Ship It. Took you a few years to apply for acting school, but when you did actually send a letter to the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), you got accepted. Does an academy like that actually instil acting ability into you, or does it nurture what is already inside? I note your first major break was auditioning for Neil Armfield for a major role in Tim Winton's ‘Cloudstreet', and you “somehow” got the job, moved to Sydney and suddenly started working with many famous and respected actors including, former guest of this podcast, Max Cullen. He was on episode 265, talking about Sunday Too Far Away, which was shot in South Australia. Did any Max Cullen rub off on you (or any of the actors) as you travelled overseas with that show? I just heard Malcom MacDowell being interviewed by Bill Maher. Malcolm got his break with Clockwork Orange and is now busier than ever. He did admit that he had said yes to films that he did not like, just for the money, noting, as a professional actor, what else can you do. This is what scares me to the core on behalf of artists like you. Your existence is one of maintaining the confidence to lurch from one gig to the next. Did you have to work hard to adapt to that reality after such a dream start to your professional career? One of our listeners, Anthony, has a young daughter, Alannah who is 11 and just went to an acting school on the Gold Coast and now has four agencies wanting to talk to you. I said she could ask you a couple of questions, given you have done a good smattering of TV work in shows like All Saits, Blue Heelers, and South Australian favourite, McLeod's Daughters and TV/film is what is luring her. First question, what was the first step in getting a role on TV?Second question, what was your favourite thing you have been? Alannah's dad had reworded the second question as What character impacted you the most, and to me, that's a great segue into Shore Break, because from the glowing and thoughtful reviews I've seen, this show gets you in the gut, which means it must have gotten you in the gut.So, what attracts you to the world of the isolate? I am profoundly jaundices by the ubiquity of smart phones and social media – I was originally a champion of them, now I am a voice saying they only LOOK like they are connecting us; they actually only deliver the confection of connection. Does that sentiment intersect with themes of the play? Is there something significant about these loners being near the water? Would the story be the same in a landlocked situation? Can you take us into your experience of chatting with these people because you note there was laughter along with very great pain. How did you earn that trust? Or was it easier than we might expect because you actually have them an ear inclined towards them? The blurb for the show says: Simple and raw, addressing the search for human connection and meaning, in a life filled with rejection and regret, Shore Break elegantly depicts the vulnerability of masculinity through a tour de force performance, sharp writing, and an emotional sucker-punch you won't see coming. We'll keep the sucker punch secret but without spoiling the play, can you tell us if these outsiders do have lessons for us about meaning that we cannot find elsewhere? I'm told that you describe working in theatre as a very insular experience, and just like surfing, they both require intensity and relaxation together. Does that seem to contrast the life of stable normalcy which is the gold standard in society's narrative about itself? The young director for this production is Chelsea Griffith who's worked closely with ex-Artistic Director Chris Drummond, to direct this work. The US election made age a big issue. And we hear people grumble if their doctor is too young, etc, based on the assumption that age brings wisdom and insight. You've been around. Did you need to adapt your mindset in any way to take direction from someone who is establishing their career? 01:15:45 Musical Pilgrimage In the Musical Pilgrimage, we feature Darkness & Gold by Chérie of My Chérie fame. With rich metaphors and poignant lyrics, 'Darkness & Gold' invites listeners into a world of introspection and self-discovery. My Chérie explores the various personas we embody, from the curated versions we present on social media to the hidden depths of our innermost selves. The song captures the essence of the human condition, highlighting the constant tension between aspiration and acceptance. Chérie says it's her candid portrayal and deep dive into my human experience of the internal struggles we all face. In confronting themes of strength, vulnerability, and the pursuit of self-improvement, I want to acknowledge the efforts of trying and the tricky journey of figuring ourselves out.”Support the show: https://theadelaideshow.com.au/listen-or-download-the-podcast/adelaide-in-crowd/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Safety on Tap

Full show notes: www.safetyontap.com/ep216 Radio, television, and the content we consume have changed enormously since I was a kid. This is a podcast about the physics, and the metaphor of this change and how we can change too, but only if we want to remain resonant.   Hey, it's Andrew, and this is Safety on Tap.   Since you're listening in, you must be a leader wanting to grow yourself and drastically improve health and safety along the way.  Welcome to you, you're in the right place.  If this is your first time listening in, thanks for joining us and well done for trying something different to improve! And of course welcome back to all of you wonderful regular listeners. There used to be just a handful of TV stations, and a handful of radio stations. It was kind of easy as a kid, because the TV guide fit onto a single page in the newspaper, and the discussion about what to watch was easier because there were only a few options to choose from. Cartoons on Channel 7 on the afternoons we were allowed to watch TV, then Channel 2 at 6pm for the ABC news, on Wednesdays the highlight of the TV week was a bit of police drama with Blue Heelers on Channel 7 at 8.30, and Friday night football on Channel 9 kicked off the sporting entertainment of the weekend.  Bandwidth used to be a constraint.  On the radiomagnetic spectrum, there are only a limited number of frequencies which TV or radio could use to broadcast their content to you.  Even if you have a digital radio in your car or at home, you can still see the remnants of this bandwidth constraint, when a radio station includes a number in the name - Mix 106.5, 104.1 Today FM.  The number is the actual frequency (measured in Mega Hz for FM stations), the actual number of times the wave goes up and down per second.  That number meant it was easy for you to tune into the right station, to listen to what they had to offer, loud and clear.  If you were one point off, one tweak of the dial, and not only did you have the wrong frequency, you had garbled, snowy, or no radio content to listen to.   There is no doubt that the use of the radiomagnetic spectrum for communication, and its associated constraint of a limited number of frequencies, shaped our culture enormously.  Until the constraint disappeared.  With the internet we went from limited bandwidth to broadband - because we jumped off the radiomagnetic spectrum and entered a world of limitless channels to choose from, unlimited space for broadcast, and people who were more than happy to no longer be constrained to the 3 or 5 channels they used to have to choose from.

SOCIAL MEDIA BUZZ - Wendy Bowyer Wendy Bowyer reports on the hot issues most talked about this past week on our RV Lifestyle Facebook Group: One post that really caught people's attention last week was from John. John took a picture of his awning that hadn't been cleaned in five years. As you can imagine, it was pretty stained and dirty. John bought a Magic Eraser mop and cleaned a section of it and showed everyone the before and after. People loved it!  Some asked specific questions about the Magic Eraser mop. Others shared what they use to successfully clean their awnings. Some use a product called Awesome, sold at dollar stores, and others use a homemade combo with Dawn dish soap, a dash of bleach, and water. Others said to prevent the mold in the first place, always make sure your awning is dry before storage. Lots of helpful tips in that post, with hundreds and hundreds of shares and comments. Angie had quite the scare last week. The very second she stepped outside her camper last week, what did she see but a BLACK BEAR! She said the bear came up from the side of her RV, completely freaked her out, and she ran right back in. Can you imagine? She was camping in Helen, Georgia, and her post led to a big long conversation of what others would do if they came face to face with a black bear. And do you know, quite a few RV Lifestyle Facebook members have! Rhonda said one time she was camping at Glacier National Park, came out of the camper, turned, and there, under the slide out, was a black bear just 6 feet away! She said she gasped so loudly she scared the poor thing. The bear actually jumped, its eyes grew big and it ran away! Josh said he had a black bear walk up to him in the Smokies two years ago. He said it was amazing how something so big could be so quiet. The encounter was the scariest experience of his life. Then, I'll leave you with a picture and a"public service announcement". Teresa snatched a picture of her dog, a Blue Heeler, poking his head through the window of her rig and wrote: "Public Service Announcement: Fifth Wheel screens are not Blue Heeler proof." The picture was adorable and many said their dogs poke their heads through the screens of their campers, too. Who knew?? Many shared pictures - which were fun to see! This weeks guest is Charles Countryman who along with wife Laura, runs K9-Culture, a 53,000 square foot, premier boarding and training facilty in Carrollton, Texas.  Charles grew up in North Idaho, and joined the Army two weeks after leaving high-school. He eventually wanted to be a police officer so joined as an MP. Despite not wanting to travel, Charles ended up leaving basic training and ending up in Panama, he also saw Korea, Japan, the Gulf, and spent six-months in Somalia where he ended up in an accident that cost him the loss of a lot of his hearing.  He left the army, met Laura and they settled in Orlando, Florida where he started a sales job in the heavy equipment industry, eventually working his way up to National Sales Manager and COO.  When the kids grew up they got a cattle dog puppy who loved herding his grandchildren, which sparked off a love of training, and a dream of running a training business.  A few changes at work meant Charles has the opportunity to leave, and despite everyone telling him he was he was crazy, he and Laura decided to go all in with their own dog training business.  They moved to Dallas, Texas where Charles worked for another training company before going all in with K9-Culture, the largest board and train facilty in Texas.  The journey started with just Charles, Laura and a dog agressive Blue-Heeler called Hank, now they have 30 staff, 15 trainers, and multiple board and train programs running, weekly classes, a luxury boarding kennel, grooming services and a retail offering under the K9-Culture roof.   In this compelling and honest interview you will discover; How Charles initially advertised his business, and why he still invests A LOT of time, money and energy on marketing his training services.  Why looking for ability and attitude, is more important than previous dog training experience when hiring staff How systemising everything at K9 Culture has enabled massive and rapid growth, whilst also maintaining incredibly high standards  Why putting the dogs welfare first and making training FUN, is the best way to grow a dog training business. How the first human agressive case dog case they ever trained ended up being a ring bearer at the owners wedding! Why Crunching numbers is crucial when adding new services, IF you want them to be profitable. And....why Charles had to be sober to secure a first date with Laura, his wife of 25 years!  Charles also shares some powerful insights into the common mistakes dog owners are make by trying to exhaust their dog, when they should be trying to fulfill their dog.  This is a really entertaining and inspiring interview. She also talks about playing Gertrude in Bell Shakespeare's 2020 production of Hamlet, the difference between performing on stage and screen, and what she's learned across her acclaimed career.    Lisa McCune has earned an impressive collection of awards as an actor, including four Gold Logies for Most Popular Personality on Australian television. She recently starred in Girl from the North Country, as well as the Network Ten comedy series How To Stay Married and Bell Shakespeare's production of Hamlet.    After graduating from the WA Academy of Performing Arts, she landed the role of Maggie Doyle in the police drama Blue Heelers, which went on to become one of the most popular and enduring programs on Australian television, making her a household name. Her other screen credits include The Potato Factory, Ex PM, It's A Date, Sea Patrol, Rake, MDA, and Hell Has Harbour Views.    On stage, she's starred as Maria in The Sound of Music, which she followed with her Green Room Award-winning performance as Sally Bowles in Cabaret. She earned a Helpmann nomination for her performance in The King and I, and has also appeared in Shane Warne The Musical, South Pacific, Into The Woods, and Guys and Dolls.

On the border between Mexico and Texas, where Yara grew up, the air is filled with a little light magic. In this episode, Yara talks about how this environment produced this gentle spooky tale. Born in México and raised on the border, Yara is drawn to darker tales and is an aficionado of Mexican folklore. She attributes this to her own mother and abuela who told the best spooky stories around. Yara is a Latina dual language educator, mother and author who is passionate about representation and advocacy in all realms. As an elementary dual language (Spanish) educator of nearly a decade, she has been fortunate enough to gain a window into the exact type of literature that children are drawn to, and, also, what is missing within the current selection of literature for children. She has had short stories published in LatineLit magazine. Yara currently lives in Austin with my two daughters, husband and rescued Blue Heeler pup. This week’s guest is one of the elders of podcasting in Australia. Back in 2010, he and Wil Anderson started making the podcast TOFOP – as well a collaborating on other podcasts, including the enduring and iconic, Two Guys One Cup. He’s also a well-known actor, starring in Blue Heelers, McLeod’s Daughters and Home and Away. I speak of course of Charlie Clausen. This episode was recorded in the aftermath of the Northern Rivers floods in which Charlie was on the front line of the rescue effort while I stood in my borrowed gumboots many lines back. During our chat, Charlie details the perils of acting and podcasting and how to deal with people offering up unsolicited criticisms along the way. IT DOESN’T MATTER THAT CHARLIE DIDN’T GO TO DRAMA SCHOOL: This is a public episode. A songwriter, singer, pianist, actor, and comedian known for his caustic sociopolitical humor, Eddie Perfect (IG: @edmundperfect) (TW:@theeddieperfect) released his first comedy album, Welcome to the Inside of Ed's Head, in 2003. Having already worked original songs into his live comedy act, he wrote the satirical Shane Warne: The Musical, based on the life of the Australian cricketer. It premiered in 2008. Starting in 2010, he spent six years on the TV comedy-drama Offspring, and appeared as a judge on Australia's Got Talent's eighth season in 2016. Trying his hand at Broadway, he found work as a lyricist on King Kong in 2018. A year later, Perfect received a Tony Award nomination for his playful score to Broadway's Beetlejuice. A native of Mentone, Victoria, Perfect earned a bachelor's degree from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2001. While honing his live stage material, he landed guests spots on Australian TV series such as the drama Blue Heelers and sitcom Kath & Kim. He released his first two comedy albums, Welcome to the Inside of Ed's Head and Angry Eddie, in 2003 and 2005, respectively. His live show The Big Con, a collaboration with actor Max Gillies, toured theaters in 2005. Also that year, he premiered his own comedy show, Drink Pepsi, Bitch!, releasing an album of the same name in 2006. The year 2007 saw Perfect playing multiple characters in Casey Bennetto's Keating! The Musical, about former prime minister Paul Keating. Perfect's own Shane Warne: The Musical opened at the Melbourne Athenaeum Theatre in December 2008, with a national tour to follow. The show won the Helpmann Award for Best New Australian Work. Meanwhile, Eddie Perfect & the Renovators contributed two songs to the March 2009 Vitamin Records release The Colors Tribute Album, Vol. 1. The show-business polymath next directed and hosted all ten episodes of reality show The Ultimate School Musical and performed the autobiographical song cycle Songs from the Middle, both in 2010. Later in 2010, he took the role of Mick Holland in the hit Channel Ten comedy-drama series Offspring, where he stayed through 2016. In the meantime, he played Mack the Knife in two different productions of the musical play The Threepenny Opera, and his show Misanthropology, a mix of music and social satire, premiered at the Sydney Festival in 2011. A live album of the show arrived later that year. Perfectstarred in an updated version of Shane Warne: The Musical in 2013, with a cast recording to follow a year later. In 2015, a revived Songs from the Middle was captured live at the Sydney Opera House, featuring Perfect, Iain Grandage, and the Brodsky Quartet. Around the end of his run on Offspring in 2016, Perfect appeared as a judge on the eighth edition of Australia's Got Talent, alongside Kelly Osbourne, writer/actor Ian Dickson, and actress Sophie Monk. By then, Perfect had moved his home base to New York City, where, partly inspired by the success of countryman Tim Minchin, he pursued a career on Broadway. His first credit was writing lyrics for the Broadway version King Kong. With music by Marius de Vries, the musical had premiered in Melbourne in 2013, with a reworked version making its New York debut in October 2018. Featuring music and lyrics by Perfect and a book by Scott Brown and Anthony King, the stage musical Beetlejuice (based on the 1988 Tim Burton film) premiered in Washington, D.C., that same month before moving to Broadway's Winter Garden Theatre in April 2019. The show went on to receive eight Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. The cast album was released by Ghostlight in June 2019 and reached the Top Ten of Billboard's independent albums chart.
