Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) audits of hospitals play a key role in ensuring compliance with 340B rules and regulations. In this episode, Dave Lacknauth, executive director of pharmacy services at Broward Health in Fort. Lauderdale, Fla., joins us to discuss the importance of taking a proactive, comprehensive approach to audit readiness with the goal of ensuring clean audit results. Compliance protects 340B accessBeing prepared for HRSA audits serves a crucial function that ultimately benefits the patients whom hospitals serve, Lacknauth explains. Maintaining the integrity of 340B means protecting access to 340B savings that hospitals can invest in crucial care for community members that need it. Continuous audit readinessLacknauth discusses how Broward Health maintains audit readiness by conducting internal audits, bringing in external consultants, and identifying areas of opportunity for improvement. A robust system of internal reviews means that when HRSA comes knocking, Broward Health is already prepared. This was evident after a recent audit of one of the system's hospitals that resulted in zero recommendations for improvement.Organization, resources, transparency are keyPreparing for audits requires a health system to invest time and resources, but Lacknauth stresses that these investments pay off. Engaging a comprehensive team from various departments in the audit readiness process allows for a health system to have the appropriate level of responsiveness and transparency during a HRSA audit.Resources:Nebraska Is 12th State To Enact Contract Pharmacy ProtectionsIdaho Becomes Fourth State To Mandate 340B Reports From Hospitals

Gov. Ron DeSantis will have to find a new chief of staff. Shane Strum will be leaving to take over as CEO of Broward Health starting next month. Also, on today’s Sunrise: — Don’t bother DeSantis just yet: he’s basking in the warmth of the Super Bowl. The Governor says Florida is home to two of the greatest of all time. Unless, of course, the Super Bowl turns out to be a super-spreader. At times it appeared the only ones who really followed safety protocols were the masked dancers in the halftime show. — First came the Holocaust survivors, now the Bay of Pigs veterans. The Governor says survivors of the ill-fated invasion of Cuba in 1961 can now get their COVID-19 vaccinations at home in Miami-Dade. — State lawmakers will be taking up a bill in the upcoming session to outlaw abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Two women say it was their only choice — and the Legislature should butt out. — The co-leader of the House Democrats has a theory as to why Republicans are serving up a heaping helping of red meat designed to trigger “the libs.” — And finally, a Florida man is saying that 22 pounds of crystal meth in his carry-on bag must belong to someone else who has an identical backpack.
Say goodbye to the worst month on record for COVID-19 fatalities in Florida. The Department of Health reported the deaths of 4,806 Floridians in January, breaking the record set in August by 462. Also, on today’s Sunrise: — Gov. Ron DeSantis says we need to vaccinate seniors first because they face the greatest risk, but there’s another group that may be just as vulnerable are off the list — persons with physical or intellectual disabilities. — As lawmakers gear up for next month’s Legislative Session, they’re facing backlash over a bill to crackdown on protesters. During its first committee hearing, House Bill 1 drew dozens of vocal opponents and Republicans not happy with what they heard. — In the aftermath of the scandal at the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence, state lawmakers are looking at other nonprofits that have exclusive deals to act as service providers from the state. State investigators have found more than a dozen organizations doing business for the state that appear to have paid too much to the top brass. — DeSantis may have to find a new chief of staff. Shane Strum is a finalist for CEO of Broward Health which pays about 5 times as much as he makes working for the Governor. — And Finally, a Florida Man and Woman squared off in an elevator. Both were topless.

The pandemic has had a tremendous impact on the business of healthcare. With states canceling elective procedures and people deferring care for fear of being exposed to the virus, hospital and medical practice revenue is down. On the flip side, many health plans are sitting on a mountain of premiums that aren't being spent because of this deferred care, possibly leading to rebates in some cases and a ton of uncertainty in pretty much all cases. One less obvious outcome of all of this may fall on Medicare Advantage plans in 2021, and it threatens to lower payments by 4-6% in 2021. Medicare Advantage, of course, is the rapidly growing model that'll cover more than 24 million Americans this year. According to a recent Avalere report, these plans may be looking at both a sicker population and reduced payments in 2021 because of this deferred utilization. Here to help us understand why, and to share some advice for how Medicare Advantage plans can weather the storm is Dr. Matt Lambert, a practicing ER clinician, and Chief Medical Officer at Curation Health. A few actions Dr. Lambert suggests are: Focus on the long game and be patient. For example, don't pay out more to shareholders and, instead, place revenue in short-term investments that they can access without penalty. Prioritize virtual care/telemedicine enablement/reimbursement now and moving forward. This will enable more members to access care while avoiding in-person treatment risks. Lead with interventions and the type of claim vs. volume of claims. MA plans will be best served to focus on capturing the key conditions that map specifically to chronic conditions as they drive the most improved outcomes, utilization and costs. There's a lot of nuance to this story and the way Medicare Advantage payments are calculated. Dr. Lambert breaks it all down for us. Enjoy! Dr. Matt Lambert Dr. Matt Lambert brings more than 20 years of experience as a clinician, CMIO, and change leader in value-based care, ensuring that patients receive more comprehensive care and that payers and providers better capture the value of their services. He is a practicing, board-certified emergency medicine provider who previously founded his own physician staffing company. Dr. Lambert was one of the founding members of Clinovations. During his time there he served as part of the leadership team for several electronic health record implementations at the nation's largest public health system in New York City, the University of Washington in Seattle, Johns Hopkins, Barnabas Health, Medstar, and Broward Health. He is also the author of two healthcare books: Unrest Insured and Close to Change: Perspectives on Change and Healthcare for a Doctor, a Town, and a Country. mlambert@curationhealth.com Curation Health Curation Health was founded by a team of healthcare veterans and clinicians to help providers and health plans effectively navigate the transition from fee-for-service to value-based care. Today we sit down with Dr. Sherika Newman. This is an uniquely different topic that we're talking about today as we discuss Palliative Care in the practice and healthcare space of Concierge Medicine. According to the WHO, an estimated 40 million people are in need of palliative care each year, 78% of them people live in low- and middle-income countries. Worldwide, only about 14% of people who need palliative care currently receive it. ... Early palliative care reduces unnecessary hospital admissions and the use of health services.[1] Palliative care is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients (adults and children) and their families who are facing problems associated with life-threatening illness. It prevents and relieves suffering through the early identification, correct assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, whether physical, psychosocial or spiritual. Dr. Sherika Newman is the physician every patient deserves. With a gentle spirit and a listening ear, she pours love into every patient experience. For Dr. Newman, palliative care is not just a practice; it's a calling. After attending Nova Southeastern College of Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, FL, she completed her Family Medicine residency in 2008. In 2009, she finished her Fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at Broward Health. Since then, Dr. Newman has played a leading role in both inpatient and outpatient palliative medicine including operating her own private practice from 2009-2011, leading the Lee Memorial Hospital Q-Life Palliative Medicine Program from 2011 until 2014 and managing at Emory University as the Palliative Site Director of Emory Saint Joseph Hospital until July 2017. Her experience has earned her the recognition to serve as a national leader in palliative care. RELATED STORY Differences Between Palliative Care and Hospice [2] In 2012, Dr. Newman was a nominee for the Robert Wood Johnson Leadership Award. She has also left her mark on the Florida Physician's Orders for Life-Sustaining Therapy (POLST). With Dr. Newman, you get more than just a physician; she has a heart for the people. She is a public speaker who uses local and regional platforms to educate communities on Palliative Care including an appearance on ABC affiliate WZVN in Fort Myers, where she spoke openly about compassionate care. With Doctors In The Family, Dr. Newman offers patients a double dose of compassion and experience. Practicing alongside her colleague, Michelle Evans, the two bring nearly two decades of success to family medicine. Dr. Newman gives patients the personal touch providing an intimate restorative experience. “It's about our family caring for your family,” she said. The care Dr. Newman provides is unforgettable. She brings patients peace and comfort during the most difficult times of their lives. She not only heals; she delivers. To connect with Dr. Newman and the practice, Doctor in the Family ...
