How to Confidently Navigate Digital Overwhelm

The Impostor Syndrome Files

In this episode of the Impostor Syndrome Files, we talk about digital overwhelm. Are you feeling digitally overwhelmed? So much of our communication these days happens virtually, which inherently feels more performative and high-pressure. If you're already prone to impostor syndrome, you may feel even more like a fraud in these environments. But it doesn't have to be this challenging. My guest this week is Craig Mattson, professor of communication at Calvin University, who shares his research on work culture in our digital age, which inspired his book, Digital Overwhelm: A Mid-Career Guide to Coping at Work. Here we discuss the added stresses and self-doubts that come with communicating virtually. We also explore strategies to maintain confidence, leverage our existing strengths and communicate with greater intentionality.About My GuestProfessor Mattson taught and conducted research for 20 years at Trinity Christian College on the south side of Chicago, where he and his wife brought up four children. Now, having moved to Grand Rapids, Craig and Rhoda enjoy hiking, playing racquetball, and walking their Shih Tzu, an extremely timid creature named Chaucer. Craig writes quite nearly every day of his life and enjoys reading hard books in the company of good-humored folk.~Connect with Craig:Website: https://www.themodeswitch.com/~Connect with Kim and The Impostor Syndrome Files:Join the free Impostor Syndrome Challenge:https://www.kimmeninger.com/challengeLearn more about the Leading Humans discussion group:https://www.kimmeninger.com/leadinghumansgroupJoin the Slack channel to learn from, connect with and support other professionals: https://forms.gle/Ts4Vg4Nx4HDnTVUC6Join the Facebook group:https://www.facebook.com/groups/leadinghumansSchedule time to speak with Kim Meninger directly about your questions/challenges: https://bookme.name/ExecCareer/strategy-sessionConnect on LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/kimmeninger/Website:https://kimmeninger.com

Dear Friends, In this season of Igniting Imagination, we are talking with leaders across disciplines who can help us name the realities of this moment and offer ways to claim the leadership needed to lean into God's call for a more loving world. This week's guest is Dr. Aaron Kuecker, President of Trinity Christian College in Chicago, and I can't wait for you to hear what they are doing on their campus to tend the wellbeing of their students. It is intentional and generous and nothing short of life-changing – from their approach to the funding model to how they are protecting the mid-week “Wellbeing Wednesday.” You can't help but think: What if all campuses were trying similar things? How would this generation be shaped for good? Perhaps we might all be a bit more grounded and generous and less despairing. I'm excited for you to meet Aaron and hear how truth-telling, transparency and a commitment to wellbeing is transforming individual lives, a campus, and a community. I hope it sparks a new imagination in you for what is possible in this season! By the grace of God, may it be so. Today Daily Devotional

God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them, male and female he created them. — Genesis 1:27 John is the chair of the art department at Trinity Christian College. Seven years ago, when he heard that a teenage member of Roseland Christian Ministries was shot and killed, John initiated the Roseland Portrait Project as a way to honor the young man and to strengthen bonds in the community. John painted the young man's portrait on a wood panel. He then went on to paint 404 more portraits of Roseland community residents, and the project became a traveling exhibit. Here are John's words: “500 years ago, only kings had their portraits painted as a way of asserting their significance. The time and energy it takes to paint a portrait by hand is a way of paying concentrated attention to a single person. It is a way of valuing ordinary people for who they are, not what they achieve or the money they make.” John's description of this process has been a helpful way for me to think about being made in God's image. Before we build a life, achieve, grow, get sick, make mistakes—before any of what becomes our life takes place—there is in us the same inherent value because all of us human beings bear the image of God. You are created in God's image. Every person you come across today is also made in God's image. God, we thank you for art and the beauty of your creation. Give us eyes to see your image in all people. Amen.

Here at MinistryWatch we bring you news about Christian ministries, as well as the latest in charity and philanthropy, news that we examine from a Christian worldview perspective.  Our goal is to help us become better stewards of the resources God has entrusted to us. These mid-week “Extra” episodes are a chance for us to go deep with a particular topic, and this week I want to take a deep dive into Christian higher education, because of both its pivotal role in the culture, and because Christian colleges are among the largest Christian ministries in the country. Today, we have on the program Dr. Erik Hoekstra. Erik Hoekstra serves as the fourth, and current president of Dordt University. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he is no stranger to the role of president of a Christian college. His father served as president of Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, IL, when he was growing up, and his father-in-law was president of Trinity during his college years. Erik Hoekstra received his bachelor's degree in history and philosophy from Trinity Christian College, his master's degree in international management from The Rotterdam School of Management of Erasmus University in the Netherlands, and his Ph.D. in organizational learning and human resource development from Iowa State University. During his time at Dordt, President Hoekstra has led two capital campaigns, the building of a new Science and Technology Center, nursing simulation lab, theatre space, and Agriculture Stewardship Center. He has overseen the creation of innovative programs, such as Pro-Tech, a two-year, hands-on vocational degree. President Hoekstra also served in the process of transitioning Dordt from a college to a university in 2019. Before we go:  A quick reminder that this show exists because of the generosity of our readers and listeners.  We take no money from the ministries we cover.  There's no advertising on our website.  We are completely listener and reader-funded.  If you'd like to make a donation to MinistryWatch, just go to MinistryWatch.com and hit the donate tab at the top of the page. If money is a little tight now…hey, I get it.  Been there a time or two myself.  You can still help the program.  Just rate us on your podcast app.  The more ratings we get, the higher we rank with search engines, and that means other people can find us more easily.  Rating us just takes a second, and it doesn't cost you a dime.  It's a free, easy, and important way you can support the MinistryWatch podcast. The producers for today's program are Rich Roszel and Steve Gandy. We get database and other technical support from Cathy Goddard, Stephen DuBarry, and Casey Sudduth. When and how to develop rotational power in your baseball swing Bill Miller is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist since 2017. He has a passion for learning, spreading and applying the most advanced methods of strength training for baseball players. Bill has worked with athletes from Little League through professional ranks. He played baseball collegiately at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, IL, graduating with a degree in Exercises Science. Played briefly in the Frontier Baseball League for the Joliet Slammers. He currently works at Dream Big Athletics in Palatine, IL and trains personal clients out of that space. Sammy and Bill discuss: “What’s the difference between a ball hit at 90 and 95 mph.” Why power and exit velocity seem to matter? With the athletes Bill trains what are the benchmarks he looks at on their way to 100mph exit velocity, and how does he train his athlete’s to generate more rotational power? What can athletes who are stuck at home do to keep developing that power? According to a recent article about the Dodgers they follow an old scouting mantra: power comes last. The Dodgers aggressively seek athletic, versatile players who hit for average and have strong plate discipline, believing they can teach those players to add power with swing tweaks if the contact skills and at-bat quality are already present. So why should we still train for power now? Follow Bill on Twitter and Instagram. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/playballkid/message

Jeremy Bialek has coached basketball for a quarter century. He is currently in his second season as the Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at NAIA member Trinity Christian College. In his first season, Coach Bialek helped the Trolls double their conference win total, achieve the second most wins in the last nine campaigns, finish 24th in the nation for three-point makes per game (9.9), and produce the second best assist-to-turnover ratio in program history since the NAIA started tracking that stat. He was also instrumental in developing transfer sophomore James Pennington into an NCCAA All-Region selection. Before coming to Trinity, Coach Bialek spent 18 seasons as the Varsity Head Coach at Indianapolis Homeschool. During his tenure with the Wildcats his teams compiled 14 straight winning seasons and advanced to seven National Tournament Final Fours. He won the 2019 NCHBC National Championship, two NCHBC Midwest Regional crowns, six ICBA state titles (twice as many state titles as any other coach in the history of the Indiana Christian Basketball Association state tournament), and seven conference championships (winning the last five in-a-row). His squads have also been listed at the top of the nation’s high schools in rankings/stats. In 2018-2019 his Cats ended the season ranked in the CBS Sports MaxPreps National Top 250 and as #8 in Indiana. Were the sacrifices of the Old Testament effectual? The book of Hebrews offers a critique of the Levitical cult and the sacrifices of the old covenant, even while explaining Christ’s new covenant sacrifice by comparison to them. Yet, if the Levitical sacrifices were ineffectual, then why use them as a paradigm for the work of Christ? Here to tackle that question is Benjamin J. Ribbens in his recent work, Levitical Sacrifice and Heavenly Cult in Hebrews (De Gruyter, 2016). Dr. Benjamin J. Ribbens is Assistant Professor of Theology at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, IL. He earned MDiv and ThM degrees from Calvin Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, MI, and received his PhD at Wheaton College Graduate School in Wheaton, IL in 2013. In addition to his monograph on Hebrews, he has articles published in Westminster Theological Journal, Catholic Biblical Quarterly, and Journal of Theological Interpretation. Michael Morales is Professor of Biblical Studies at Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, and the author of The Tabernacle Pre-Figured: Cosmic Mountain Ideology in Genesis and Exodus (Peeters, 2012), and Who Shall Ascend the Mountain of the Lord?: A Biblical Theology of Leviticus (IVP Academic, 2015).
