Where has the joy gone in digital advertising? And how can we get it back? James Chandler, chief marketing officer at the IAB, thinks that while the start of the digital scene was "an incredibly exciting space", the feeling of "joy and magic dissipated" somewhere along the way.In a study with advertisers, the IAB found that this came down to two things: "unease" about the pace of change and a feeling of "futility mainly around creativity", where advertisers do not feel "they have got much agency" in a world of algorithms and AI.Indeed, as Chandler acknowledges, in a seven-year career at the IAB, there have been "big moments" including brand safety, fraud and ad-blocking – all of which have had "advertisers questioning the integrity of the performance of digital".So the focus should be on getting people to "rediscover" joy, fun and creativity in digital advertising.Chandler joins Ella Sagar to discuss joy in digital advertising and highlights sessions from the recent Engage conference, including talks from former UK MD for Twitter Dara Nasr and EssenceMediacom's Geoff de Burca and Lindsey Jordan. Highlights03:32: Why joy in advertising is so important and where it has gone 07:15: What would a two-tier dystopian internet look like?11.56: A rallying cry for creativity from EssenceMediacom strategy chief Geoff de Burca 12.38: Former Twitter UK MD Dara Nasr on making the internet fun 15:58: Holding a mirror up to society 19.47: Key takeaways from IAB Engage
Mazda is bucking trends! Check out my exclusive podcast with Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director of Mazda UK. In this interview Jeremy gives us the inside line on Mazda's bold two-pronged strategy, balancing the advancement of electric vehicles (EVs) with a continued commitment to the internal combustion engine (ICE). He explains the challenge of the ZEV Mandate (Vehicle Emissions Trading Schemes Order) in the UK, requiring 22% of new cars sold to be EVs, and how Mazda will meet the demands despite only having one EV on sale for now. Turns out there's more flexibility in the ruling that we initially thought - but only for a short period! From the anticipation around new EVs, potentially including a sporty model, to continued investment and development of ICE vehicles for improved efficiency and emissions, as well as the potential of alternative fuels, this is a conversation you won't want to miss! What We Cover: - Mazda's Vision for the Future: How Mazda is innovating to embrace electric vehicles while keeping the internal combustion engine alive. - Exciting New Models: Jeremy hints at what's next for Mazda, including a potential new EV sports car - as 'Mazda will always want to be in the space occupied by the world's best-selling roadster, the MX-5'. - How AI might help to reconnect us with our cars About Jeremy Thomson: With 35 years in the automotive industry, Jeremy Thomson has been at the helm of Mazda UK as the Managing Director, steering the brand through innovative waters. His insights into the future of car manufacturing and Mazda's unique position in the industry offer a rare glimpse into the automotive world's next chapter. #Mazda #ElectricVehicles #AutomotiveInnovation #JeremyThomson #CarIndustry #EVsVsICE #MazdaEV #InternalCombustionEngine #AutoTrends #FutureCars #MazdaSportsCar #CarTechnology #SustainableDriving #AutomotiveFuture #DrivingInnovation Get my debut novel (perfect for petrolhead bookworms) 'The ULEZ Files' here https://amzn.eu/d/jhADkOt Please subscribe/follow YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/browncarguy?sub_confirmation=1 And follow all my channels https://linktr.ee/browncarguy If you enjoy my content, there are really easy ways to show your support Channel membership: https://www.youtube.com/browncarguy/join Buy me a Coffee! https://ko-fi.com/browncarguy Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/BrownCarGuy
Welcome to the PRmoment Podcast. On today's show, I'm chatting with Charlotte West, executive director of corporate communications at Lenovo, and Jo Patterson, UK MD at Zeno.Today, we're discussing the findings of the Global Women in PR Annual Index, a research programme that aims to measure the status of women working in PR and communications worldwide. Before we start, we should pay tribute to GWPR co-founder Angela Oakes. Angela sadly passed away after a brief illness last year but her legacy of helping to change the landscape for women working in our industry will go on.Here are some topline findings from the report:Flexible working has become an accepted normLevels of flexible working have been maintained since this time last year and are anticipated to stay.Women continue to see progression and promotions slower than men, and boardrooms continue to be male-dominated.According to the report, half of female PR professionals globally have experienced harassment or inappropriate behaviour at work. But before we start, a quick plug for our latest webinar launch. The topic is “How to track the success of an earned media campaign." Tickets are free, and we're putting this one on in partnership with our good friends at Carma. TAlso a quick mention about the relaunch of PRmoment. If you take a look at PRmoment.com, you'll see a brand new design with lots of new features, hopefully easier navigation and also the launch of our new subscription training service for senior folks within agencies' PRmoment Leaders. Do take a look and let us know if you like it. Thanks also so much to the PRmoment Podcast sponsors the PRCA.Here is a summary of what Charlotte, Jo and PRmoment founder Ben Smith discussed:3 mins The report reckons PR professionals expect to be working remotely for an average of 2.5 days a week, a slight drop in comparison to 2022 (3 days.)What remote working policies have Charlotte and Jo established at Lenovo and Zeno, respectively?“At Lenovo, the corporate guide is in the office three days a week.”6 mins A discussion of how remote working changes the culture of work - for better and for worse.“At the moment, the 2-day working week in the office is working well for us (Zeno).”9 mins Jo talks about the impact of flexible working for women working in PR.11 mins How has flexible working changed the culture at Zeno?20 mins “Most people in PR don't have a work-life balance. What we can't lose is work-life flexibility.”Some stats from the Global Women in PR Annual Index“The benefits of working flexibly continue to be regarded positively amongst PR professionals. With regard to well-being, seven in ten (75%) feel it helps employees maintain their mental well-being and four-fifths (82%) feel it helps maintain a healthy work-life balance, up from 77% in 2022.“75% believe flexible working allows women to have a family or take on caring responsibilities and still progress in their careers; up slightly from 71% last year. Whilst 74% agree that it helps retain female talent (increasing from 68% in 2022).A third (32%) believe that flexible working helps women progress into the boardroom.”23 mins Does flexible working slow down or speed up the PR careers of women?27 mins What does the next generation want from work? Is the generational divide amongst work-based teams becoming more pronounced?

Welcome to the PRmoment Podcast.Today we're chatting with 3 Monkeys Zeno UK managing director Jo Patterson about the encouraging trend of female leaders occupying more of the big PR agency roles in the UK.When Jo and I talked about this in our pre-show chat it got us thinking and here is a non-exhaustive list of top female PR agency leaders in the UK:We've got Jo at 3 Monkeys Zeno, Jo-ann Robertson at Ketchum, Jo Carr at Hope&Glory, Nicola Todd at Ogilvy PR, Pippa Arlow at Smarts, Ruth Kieran at Cirkle, Ruth Allcurch at WE, Sian Morgan at Cow, Sharon Bange at Kindred, Rebecca Grant at BCW, Ali Maynard at Manifest, Cath Taylor at Taylor Herring, Angie Moxham at The Fourth Angel, Kate Stevens at Axicom, Georgina Blizzard and Nicky Regonzonni at The PR Network, Mandy Sharp at Tin Man and Emma Kane at SEC Newgate, Fenella Gray at Porter Novelli and Bibi Hilton at Creative Access. And to be clear there are loads more I could mention - but you get the point. There seem to be more female leaders in top agency positions than there have been in recent memory - perhaps than there has ever been before. And one of the things Jo and I will talk about on the show today is the potential reasons for that. For those of you that are not aware 3 Monkeys Zeno has a fee income of £9m in the UK and 80 employees. Zeno started out as Edelman's conflict shop but has grown into a global agency with a fee income of about $150 m. About 70% of Zeno's revenues are in the US.Jo became the UK MD of 3Monkeys Zeno in October 2020. Previously she was UK MD at Porter Novelli and a board director at Red.Zeno bought 3 Monkeys in 2016. I always think of Zeno as a fairly new agency but for any PR agency history buffs out there, it was founded in 1998.Before we start do check out our latest free-to-attend webinar “The State of Social 2023: Channel Disruption, Influencer Growth and The Great Data Integration Challenge.”Thanks as ever to the PRmoment Podcast sponsors The PRCA. Here is a summary of what Jo and I discussed:3 mins Jo talks about why we're seeing more women PR agency CEOs.“We're (women) still only tracking at about 40% for leadership roles.”7 mins Jo talks about the benefits of female leadership traits in a progressive working environment.“It's the people you surround yourself with… charismatic leaders who are prepared to stand up and shape their organisations…and having the freedom to do that.”10 mins We've probably seen a rise of misogyny in society. There seems to be an upward trend of obnoxious macho culture.13 mins How do we make sure that in PR we don't lose those gains that we've made?“Greater protection for the challenging life stages that people go through”“Enshrining policies into governance”“Openness and confidence go hand in hand”17 mins Jo talks about the role models that have helped her in her career - Lesley Brend at Red, Fenella Gray at Porter Novelli and Barby Siegel at Zeno.“I like working with good people regardless of gender”20 mins How is the Zeno business doing both globally and in the UK?“About 50% of our work now is global”21 mins In the UK 3 Monkeys was known for its consumer work, how has that evolved since the acquisition?23 mins You are the first leader of the business in London who wasn't part of the original 3 Monkeys team. Has that been an advantage or disadvantage for you do you think?25 mins When an agency like Zeno buys an agency li
How do you find enough qualified people to deliver on the revenue opportunities that your business comes across? This is a problem that might be familiar to many professional services organisations, particularly within the cloud space. Our guest this week Neil Marley, came across that challenge whilst he was working at New Signature. Neil is the Managing Director at Qualyfi. He's also former UK MD and EMEA lead at New Signature, an IT Services Management company that grew from 8 to 300 people in the UK and twice won the prestigious Microsoft UK Partner of the Year award (2014, 2019), before being acquired by Cognizant in 2020. We know Neil since 2017 when New Signature started coaching with us. During the course of our time working together, they grew from about ten people to 350. From a revenue perspective that's around 48% compound annual growth rate. There are two things that Neil is excited about. The first is helping people build an exciting new technology career, regardless of their background or previous opportunities; the second is building long-term partnerships with growth organisations, offering services to help fuel their growth. He has now taken his experience doing that to make Qualyfi a positive force for the world. In this episode, he shares his journey working in public cloud technologies with Microsoft, moving from working in a big organisation to a small team, and he and his small team managed to become one of the leading partners for Microsoft. He also talked about the challenges the business faced along the way, the secrets to New Signature's success and the impact coaching had on the team dynamics. Download and listen to learn more. In the latest in the occasional series of Small Data Forum podcast interviews with industry mavens and thought leaders, SDF co-host Sam Knowles caught up with Christian Polman, UK MD of brand communications and publishing house Looping Group. To this content and creative-driven role, Christian brings a consultant's mindset (with years at Bain and an MBA) as well as digital marketing smarts (from Digitas and Google) and marketing analytics expertise (his role before Looping was with Ebiquity). Sam starts by asking Christian where the smart money is going in digital marketing. Christian's view is that digital marketing must rest on the twin levers of marketing optimisation and effectiveness, and that on this foundation brands need to build holistic customer experience. Public sector organisations have a reputation for being somewhat behind the times when it comes to IT transformation, frequently hampered by tight budgets and Byzantine bureaucratic procurement procedures. However, while this reputation isn't entirely unwarranted, the reasons behind it aren't as straightforward as they might appear. In this week's episode, we're looking at why public sector technology tends to lag behind the cutting edge, as well as what steps might be taken to give public sector technologists more room to innovate, and we're joined by HPE's senior vice president and UK MD, Marc Waters.Head over to https://bit.ly/ITPP-gov to find out more about all of the topics we've spoken about in this week's episode.
One thing that 2020 taught us was that it is absolutely possible to throw out the old, and bring in the new, almost overnight. But as brands once again look to the future, how can the recent experience of being ultra-responsive help create a better future? The answer lies in multi-scenario planning to determine where to focus. Multi-scenario planning has the ability to make the annual plan is a relic of the past. Join our host Matt Andrew, UK MD of Ekimetrics, who spoke with Bobi Carley, Head of Media and Diversity & Inclusion Lead at ISBA and Jack Collier, CMO of Mettle.

Create a Better Work Environment as an Authentic Leader with Clare Clough It's International Women's Day! What better way to commemorate this day than by celebrating our true and authentic selves? As leaders, it can be challenging to be completely authentic in the workplace — that applies for all of us, not just women. We fear that revealing too much of ourselves might invalidate us. However, showing your authenticity and vulnerability can be good for others and your business! So how exactly can we be a more authentic leader? In this episode, Clare Clough joins us to talk about improving your work environment by bringing your authentic self. We discuss how you can look after yourself and others. Clare also shares the lessons that made her a stronger leader and her absolute secret to success. If you want to learn more about the key to creating better work environments, then tune in to this episode. Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Discover how being an authentic leader can improve your work environment and grow your business. Learn how to maintain energy and resilience for yourself and others. Find out Clare's absolute secret to success. Resources Visit Pret A Manger's website for freshly prepared food and organic coffee! Check out Clare's favourite Pret coffee, Oat Flat White. Try out Angela's favourite Pret coffee, Coconut Flat White. Coaching with Angela Episode Highlights [03:02] Clare's Top 3 Proudest Moments First, Clare is proud of going to university and having a clear path by pursuing a Food Technology course. Second, she's proud of being appointed UK Managing Director at Pret A Manger despite not coming from an operations background. Lastly, Clare is proud that their business could bounce back from the pandemic's challenges. [13:41] How to Be an Authentic Leader Listen to your co-workers. The only way to learn about people is to listen. Create an environment where people are comfortable with being authentic and vulnerable. Connect and empathise with people to be a more effective leader. [19:03] Maintaining Energy for Yourself and Others Your reserves of resilience can only take you so far. Find that balance of conserving energy and putting it in the right places. Looking after yourself enables you to look after others. Be thoughtful and sensitive to what people need, but also recognise when to apply pressure or expectations. Cultivate a culture of openness in your work environment to allow positive peer-to-peer support. [24:25] Being a Stronger Leader and a Better Human For Clare, being in a job that she loves allows her to perform well. She enjoys the job she's currently in before thinking about the next opportunity. Ask for feedback and learn from mistakes. Do not wallow on your mistakes: this can be counterproductive and detrimental to your well-being. Conversely, accept that mistakes are going to happen to make it easier to bounce back from them. When faced with adversity, finding a way to go forward is the best thing you can do. [30:38] What Traits to Look for in Other People Look for people who can challenge your thinking. Clare likes people who are different from her and can fill her blind spots. She also looks for people who are similar to her and can play more of a cheerleader role. [32:29] Keeping Your Mental Health in a Good Place Working at home can blur work-life boundaries, so Clare doesn't bring her phone in the bedroom. Be kind to yourself by listening to yourself. Forgive yourself if you weren't able to follow your plans for the day. [34:06] The Best Coffee Clare's favourite coffee is Pret's Oat Flat White. Angela is a decaffeinated Coconut Flat White drinker. [36:43] The Absolute Secret to Success For Clare, authenticity is the absolute secret to success in different avenues of life. Being yourself brings better results more quickly in whatever situation. 5 Powerful Quotes [09:40] 'It was also hugely significant because I was really the first person who hadn't come from a pure operations background that had held that role previously. So I felt really proud when people sort of talk to me about what you've broken a bit of new ground here as well.' [10:49] 'The most important thing was to just get close to the people in our shop. [14:07] 'I wanted to create an environment for everyone in practice, to authentically be able to ask for help and stuff that they didn't know to know that it was possible to grow your career.' [21:33] 'So one of the values that I've always held dear to me, is always to treat people how you would like to be treated. And I think I've pulled on that a lot during the last year and, and tried to be thoughtful and sympathetic to people's circumstances or where they are. . . we've all been through the curve at different times at different speeds for different reasons' [26:56] 'I still do that I still sometimes have that sort of plunge to a depth of despair of I'll probably need to beat myself up for a week before I come up for it. But. . .you have to wonder what value that adds to you. And actually, it's detrimental, isn't it?' About Clare Clare Clough is Pret A Manger's UK Managing Director. She oversees over 400 shops and is responsible for leading Pret in its ambition to turn into a multi-channel business. In 2017, Clare led the development of Pret's new brand concept, Veggie Pret. After conducting extensive studies into the effects of workers returning after long absences, executive coach Lisa Carver has become one of the foremost authorities on managing returners effectively. This Episode: Managing Returners Masterclass – with Lisa Carver In this week's show, Lisa joins Lucinda to deliver a masterclass on how to best reintegrate workers who have been away from business for some time. They discuss the effects on both worker and company. Furthermore, it is a conversation that'll ensure you'll be better equipped to deal with the return of furloughed workers in the wake of the COVID-19 quarantine period. Indeed, managing returners for any period of absence. KEY TAKEAWAYS Studies have shown that over 50% of workers who leave a company within two years of taking maternity leave. Interestingly they did so because of the lack of support they were shown during their leave. Certainly, the psychological implications of going on leave are very rarely considered. We go from spending half our lives in a working environment, and then having that social factor removed entirely for a length of time. Identity is a crucial factor in re-integrating staff. Often, the roles we once considered vital can become redundant when left empty for a time. We need to ensure we separate the person from the role. Without a doubt, communication is key through prolonged absence. Furthermore, we need to make sure we do not create a void where the sense of routine and the feeling of an open channel slowly disintegrates. The quarantine has highlighted many areas in which our companies have failed, but also how they can operate more efficiently. Certainly, flexible working will be widely adopted, going forwards. This week on the PRmoment podcast, in the latest of our life stories series, I'm pleased to welcome Sarah Scholefield, CEO, UK and Ireland, Grayling.Sarah has worked at Grayling for five years, having previously held senior roles in Singapore with Fleishman Hillard, Ruder Finn and EdelmanGrayling has nine offices in the UK, 70 globally and 130 employees. Sarah can’t comment on these numbers because of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, but Grayling was reported to have a fee income of circa $55m globally in 2018.Here’s a flavour of what Sarah and I discussed:[00:01:22] How Sarah has restructured and changed Grayling UK since she became UK MD in 2015. [00:02:29] Why you have to take a long-term view when you're trying to turn a business around.[00:02:43] How Sarah had to get rid of the parts of the business that weren’t working as they should be. [00:02:58] Why when changing a business you've got to be quite brave and you've got to take some risks. [00:03:12] How Sarah and Paul Taaffe joining the business at the same time, having not know each other beforehand, created an appetite for change at Grayling.[00:03:44] Why Sarah believes PR agencies have to evolve constantly. [00:04:50] How a massive talent audit was critical to the turning around of Grayling.[00:07:24] How Sarah simplified Grayling's structure.[00:08:06] How Sarah attempted to restructure Grayling while keeping the client offer as good in a competitive market. [00:10:11] What does Grayling look like today compared to three years ago? [00:10:40] Why Sarah believes work needs to give “people an opportunity to realiz=se their own potential.”[00:13:44] Why Sarah believes PR is a service industry, so PR firms need to produce a product or service that clients want and we should not try to overcomplicate things by defining the way they are structured.[00:15:00] Why you need a combination of people who know the business and new talent when you’re trying to turn a firm around.[00:15:37] How Sarah persuaded some high-profile senior people to leave established firms to join the turnaround at Grayling. [00:18:07] How has Sarah attempted to bring more quality and consistency to Grayling’s work? [00:21:12] Why Sarah made the move to Singapore for a period of her career. [00:22:14] Why the Asia PR market has, in some territories, leapfrogged European and US PR techniques.[00:24:13] Why there is often a different mindset for PR and marketing professionals working in Asia with much higher GDP and market growth rates. [00:27:54] How Sarah made the step from client lead to Grayling UK MD. [00:29:08] How Sarah's career story has taken her from a receptionist at a PR firm to the MD of Grayling.[00:32:19] Why it was her time at Freud's that made Sarah as a PR person.
The first Google employee hired outside of the US. She went on to be Google's UK MD before running AOL, Bebo, DailyMotion and BuzzFeed in Europe. Today she is a VC partner at Hambro Perks. We talked about her early days selling online classified adverts at The Sun and blinking banner ads for AltaVista. How Google changed online advertising forever and became the cash cow behemoth it is today. We discussed the rapid growth of Google and it's 'don't be evil' culture and how Kate fought for diversity against the bros-culture found in the US. And finally, we discussed some of the major challenges facing Google today from EU regulation over copyright and threats to break it up for being anti-competitive, through to the higher tax levy proposed for online giants like Google in Europe, as well as the opportunity and threat of voice search. The Omnicom owned agency is a rare example of an PR firm owned by a holding group that has a recent track record of double digit growth. What is it that has enabled Portland to grow much faster than almost all other PR firms owned by a holding company owned? Mark has had an interesting career; he has had big jobs outside of PR and communications before make the move into public relations, first of all within government and now agency side. Here is a flavour of what Mark and I discuss: Why did Mark make the move from MD at LBC radio to a role in PR? Why Mark used to be a radio DJ? Mark compares working in government to working in the corporate world Whether Mark enjoyed working for UK government communications, firstly for Tony Blair and then Gordon Brown… How Mark replaced the Foreign Secretary with Eddie Izzard at a European Council meeting! How Mark loved the camaraderie of working in government communications Why the transition into agency world was harder than Mark thought it was going to be Why when Oliver Pauley, the previous UK MD left Portland, a pretty corporate agency, they appointed Mark (its digital guy) to the top job How the Omnicom owned PR firm has sustainably grown at double digit growth, when most of its holding company peer agencies have not been able to grow and anything like that rate (my words not Mark’s) Why Portland attempts to constantly re-invent itself The dangers of commoditised, lower margin work for an agencies survival How can an agency of Portland’s size create an entrepreneurial culture How Portland’s bonus scheme is critical to its growth and entrepreneurial approach Why Portland has taken a flexible and pragmatic approach to its international expansion What is the Portland model – is London the epicentre of the strategy and content with the regional offices doing the execution? The importance of language capabilities in modern public relations How Portland has built a design and content central function of 20 people Why design and content people sitting next to the account teams creates a more integrated, faster solution Why becoming a more integrated firm has changed Portland’s culture and increased the firms diversity Why Mark believes PR, comms and reputation consultancies should continue to thrive How Mark believes the likes of Portland must help clients measure the ROI of its strategic advice Why procurement hasn’t impacted corporate PR Why Mark believes the financial PR sector is ripe for disruption
