On this week's episode, WYCE Station Manager Phil Tower spoke with Jason Wheeler, co-founder of The Great Lakes Music Camp, a talented musician and founder of The Round Creek String Band. Jason told us that the 7th year of The Great Lakes Music Camp is honored to return to the beautiful shoreline of Lake Michigan at Camp Blodgett, October 3-6, 2024 GLMC features some of the finest music and vocal instructors in the nation. Jason stressed that The Great Lakes Music Camp is meant for all skill levels and all walks of life and offers a wide curriculum, several hosted jams, small group picking sessions, Q&A time with instructors, and live performances. For campers who attend, it is created to be a one-of-a-kind experience for all. By design, classes are small so all campers have personal time with the instructors. Jason urged that the camp has very limited availability. More info online: The Great Lakes Music Camp

Today I have the ultimate honor to share my conversation with June Millington, a Filipino American guitarist, songwriter, producer, educator, actress and writer. She was the co-founder and lead guitarist of the all-female rock band Fanny, which was active from 1970 to 1974. After leaving the band, June went in pursuit of her spiritual path, continued to make music, collaborate, act, write and is the co-founder and artistic director of the Institute for the Musical Arts (IMA) aka the "Magical Queendom" in Goshen, Massachusetts. The Institute for the Musical Arts was co-founded with partner Ann Hackler in Northern California in 1986 and received its nonprofit status in 1987.  It operated its studio and programs from Bodega, California's historic Old Creamery until 2001 when property was purchased in Western Massachusetts for a permanent facility. The institute's nonprofit mission is to support women and girls in music and music-related businesses.  Rooted in the legacy of progressive equal rights movements, IMA's development is guided by the visions, needs and concerns of women from a diversity of backgrounds and has grown from the need to nourish ourselves and each other. In addition to its summer programs for girls, IMA offers concerts and workshops year-round in support of its nonprofit mission which, unless otherwise noted, are open to the public.Today June shares about how they are supporting girls at IMA, leaving Fanny, feminism, foremothers, Buddhism, cancer, life lessons and what's she's got on the horizon. Here are the important links for you! Carolyn Kendrick's California childhood was filled with music: from listening to music to musicians in her family, especially her father, a professional jazz drummer. Having a well revered musician in her family meant overcoming a reputation that preceded her, but it also gave her a special relationship with the beat as a guitarist and a fiddler. She talks about her connection to rhythm and how it lives strongly in her and her songs. I first met Carolyn at The Miles of Music Camp on Three Mile island in New Hampshire, which is one of the most wonderful music communities you could find. She has found many communities in her life like at Berklee College of Music, in Austin, Nashville and very recently, in Maine. She's been living in rural Maine throughout the pandemic with her husband, Alex Steed. The two of them started a podcast called You Are Good - a feelings podcast about movies. Alex and the writer Sarah Marshall (who also hosts You're Wrong About) dig into movies every week with a special guest. Carolyn produces and writes a song inspired by the movie or covers a song from the soundtrack. Carolyn is an exquisite editor for the pod and she gets into how that has translated into her musical life. From California to Pedo Island, the boys try to see if this land('s music) truly was "made for you and me," or if as Kris Kristofferson suggested, it's just White FUBU. They're letting Jesus take the wheel as they drive blackout drunk on beer and whiskey to discuss if country has been reduced to a mere parody of itself, if the genre is little more than the soundtrack to fascism, and if modern country artists are just cynics writing the equivalent of a country-fried, musical Mad-Libs. Laura Cortese is the bandleader and primary songwriter for Laura Cortese & The Dance Cards, a group of four musicians expanding the boundaries of what an indie-folk band can be. Laura Cortese & the Dance Cards take their extensive string music background, add their knowledge of folk and roots music, and incorporate an edgy pop sensibility to create their latest album, BITTER BETTER. A stunning lesson in all the ways string instruments can be played – bowed, plucked, percussively – the album showcases Cortese and multi-instrumentalist producer Sam Kassirer (Lula Wiles, Lake Street Dive) striving to capture the most adventurous approach to each moment. The result is an album that incorporates dance-worthy foundational grooves, synth, and loops to push the boundaries of the genre. BITTER BETTER was released on JULY 17 on Compass Records. With BITTER BETTER, Laura Cortese & The Dance Cards throw out the rulebook, creating a beautifully vivid, musically unexpected canvas from their refreshingly unconventional perspective. In this episode of Mother's Guide Through Autism, Brigitte Shipman interviews Marcela Guimoye, an autism mom and founder and executive director of EndlessBrain. EndlessBrain is a not-for-profit organization that serves the special needs children and offers them musical learning opportunities to promote essential skills, self-esteem, and inclusion. Marcela created EndlessBrain a few years ago after successfully implementing therapies that included musical learning, ABA, and mindfulness to her daughter Camila who was nonverbal until age 6. Camila was diagnosed with autism at age 2.5 and had intense behavior problems including self-injury and was told by her pediatrician that she may never be able to hold a job or be independent. After much research around the country for possible treatment for Camila, Marcela began implementing a home-based therapy program utilizing various modalities.Within a year, Camila went from hitting her head on the floor, scratching and biting herself about 30 times per hour to saying “I want juice” for the first time. After seeing the improvements Camila made through music, Marcela wanted to provide an opportunity for musical learning to other children with autism, and she founded EndlessBrain which offers free summer music camp and after school programs in Naples, Florida. Marcela talks about the importance of giving our children with autism an outlet for expression such as music, dance, and art. She also encourages parents to incorporate mindfulness into their children's learning and their daily life. Marcela works as an independent healthcare consultant and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare Administration and a Master’s Degree in Applied Behavior Analysis. Marcela is a life-long musician and she is currently working on completing her debut album. Tune in to this inspiring episode and find out how musical learning can benefit your child with autism. Great conversation with Dylan Hughes at Victor Wooten’s Spirit of Music Camp! Dylan’s parents were theater actors and his father really loved music; even named him after Bob Dylan! Dylan knew he wanted to play music very early; at first it was the flute in 4th grade, which he played until 8th grade. But in 7th grade, Dylan got a bass, and that was it. “I just wanted to play … I just wanted to make music. … Music is always tapping me on the shoulder.” He played in a band in high school named the Missing Link; he had some great music teachers, including his friend Tyler Hamilton. Dylan got away from music for a while recently, but deciding to go to Spirit camp made a big difference this year, and he is back! Dylan currently plays a lot around Seattle, and his brother is a great guitar player, too. Dylan recently did a big show featuring John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme. We agreed that trying to learn a song or put on a show can give one’s life meaning. He was particularly taken by what Michael said in the Planetary Gig Talk interview about having the intention of bringing healing vibrations when playing. You can say or think before playing, “I offer you this healing vibration.” He told this to the audience prior to the Love Supreme show. “If you can do basically whatever you’re doing with the intention of healing, offering the vibration in a healing manner, I just believe that can make the world a better place, maybe that the ultimate intention,” Dylan says. He encourages other musicians to try that, offering healing vibrations when they play. He also thinks that one of the best things people can do is to find their passion and purpose, and to follow it; that would lead to a better world too, he says.

We get the story of the performer, who they learned the song from and the story behind the traditional or public domain tune. This episode features percussionist and rubboard player Paul “Bird” Edwards, from Eunice, Louisiana. We (producer Laura McCarthy & I) met Bird at Miles of Music Camp while he was teaching a class in genuine Creole music. Over the course of the week on the island, Bird grew to be more of a family member than a friend. We heard from his friends who were at the camp with us (like The Revelers) about how beloved Bird is in Louisiana. It was such a treat to be able to record an interview and a couple of traditional Creole songs with Bird at the helm. Please enjoy!

Chris Anander is an amazing musician. His earliest memories are musical memories, such as when he was in a stroller at age two with Tchaikovsky’s B flat piano concerto in his brain. We had a great conversation at Victor Wooten's Spirit of Music Camp. Chris started violin in kindergarten and was always an avid listener. He went to Berklee College of Music for trumpet, but played a lot of guitar and now considers himself a bassist. He has played all sorts of music, from classical to heavy metal. He says the power of music “might be greater than any of us can describe. … There is a primal thing to music that defies explanation.” He is aware of the profound effect remembering music has had on him and he says, “I want to impart the passion” of music to others. “I try to use my own experience as a guide for what is possible, what music can do. When the memory of a song can bring me to tears without hearing it, I would like to show people how to get there.” There are more great musicians now than at any time, he says, but the problem is with compensation, that everyone is getting paid but the musicians. The secret, Chris says, is that “everybody is important.” He says, “Music is truly one of the last things I have faith in.”

Stephen Jay is a fabulous musician, composer, and really smart and spiritual guy! He has played based in Weird Al Yankovic’s band for decades, but also has amazing insights and stories, such as music in Africa during his younger years. He also is working on new discoveries about rhythm and pitch, as he explains in this podcast. We recorded this under the Pavilion one afternoon at Wooten Woods during Spirit of Music Camp. Stephen’s mother was a beautiful pianist and his father played several instruments. So, seeing his mother in such joy while playing, Stephen knew when he was only about 5 years old that he wanted to be a musician. Music was simply paramount around the house when he was young, he says. He started piano first, then guitar when he was about 10, and bass when he joined a band at 13. His high school group Covington Tower was good enough to get a record deal! He majored in music and composition in college, and was fortunate to hang around with some real luminaries on the cutting edge of music, including John Cage! Nonetheless, he’d always been inspired by African drumming, so he and his wife Barbara left for West Africa in 1971. It was quite a trip to get there, which he describes in the podcast, but central to the experience was that the Africans he met in the villages were really still of the hunter/gatherer culture and they had a really special relationship with music. Musical instruments were seen as living beings, and “music nourished every phase of life; … music was everywhere, and it was alive and beautiful.” Everyone did music, and musicians were not in some rarefied atmosphere as today in modern areas. Stephen says, they had no written religion, other than “a sanctity and respect for all things, including inanimate things.” He says quantum physics has shown this to be correct. There was also no money or ownership out in the wild; everyone shared everything. He says Africans felt “music was a life form, not an art form. Gigantic, spanning the entire universe, and all know time, that lives, and needs musicians to help it live, at least in the audio realm.” He is currently exploring pitch and rhythm and you will have to listen to understand it. Essentially, he says, harmonic intervals each have their own signature rhythms. You can check out www.stephenjay.com for an article on this topic, among others. Stephen says that we have tapped into music to make a better world; look at how much peace, fellowship, and brotherly love music has brought to us. He says music has an inescapable beauty. When you witness something so beautiful and so much larger than yourself, it diminishes ego, and with that you worry less of things that are to come, have less fear of the unknown, and so we can get to more love and peace. “Music is sacred; it’s not a commodity.” He also says, “Music can help us distrust our fears.” “Music, and art, is our savior,” says Stephen Jay.

This episode was recorded during TAPS East Coast held at Snow Pond - the facilities of the New England Music Camp (NEMC).  We managed to include everyone, both faculty and participants, in this episode. Ted Atkatz and Shaun Tilburg are familiar faces, and we're lucky that Fiona Bryan, Director of Outreach and Communications of Snow Pond, could join us too. She's a trained violinist, and with all of our Bach conversation, she had some really interesting points to make.Topics: NEMC, TAPS, Julia Cameron's Walking in This World, adapting Bach to marimba, orchestral auditionsWatch here. Fraser was born and raised in Jamaica and deeply influenced as a child by "Ska" music. According to Fraser, she and her playmates "revered the style, energy, and feelings we derived from listening to 'our' music. It all started for me at Studio One, the record label that was like the Motown label in America. It was owned by Coxson Dodd, the master mind behind us all. He signed me n the early 1960s, and i had the pleasure of working with so many wonderful performers and musicians who were also signed with him includng Bob & Rita Marley; Peter Tosh; Bunny Wailer; Slim Smith; Delroy Wilson; joe Higgs; Ken Boothe; and the Skatalites. I really liked Bob Marley because he was rather earthy, religious, and so very talented...we used to discuss our life as kids, our love for music, and the difficulties we faced trying to get our records out on a timely basis...not to mention getting paid for them. Rayven Amani, who lists Garnet Silk, Sade & India Arie as some of her influences. This local adult contemporary vocalist from Montego Bay was restricted by her parents from watching television or listening radio because their strong religious belief had them think that such things are instrument of the devil used to influence persons to do wrong. The liberated Libran driven by her passion for music did what many persons would consider the unthinkable, break the fourth commandment by disregarding her parents instructions and started doing voice training at Hat some Music Camp.  Shortly after she recorded her first song “Wanna Be Free” for veteran producer Richard “Goofy” Campbell which received favorable rotation from must of the local radio and television stations.
