Determining whether to keep or market potential replacement females can be one of the most difficult decisions a commercial producer has to make. But even when taking into account the performance of a heifer's mother, there can still be room for error when tasked with determining future productivity. Enter GeneMax® Advantage™, a DNA test created in collaboration between Angus Genetics Inc., Certified Angus Beef® and Zoetis for commercial Angus replacement females. On today's episode, you'll hear more from Shauna Hermel and our guests, Jared Decker and Jamie Courter of the University of Missouri, regarding the features of GeneMax® Advantage™ and how testing can help identify females with varying levels of genetic merit for feed cost, temperament and end-product traits. Breeding Values and Objectives Explained with Dr Jamie Courter

What are breeding values? And why do you need a breeding objective? Our guest this week, Dr Jamie Courter, Mizzou Beef Genetics Extension Specialist, explains why they are so important for reaching our breeding goals. Do you have a breeding objective? This is the first question Jamie asks every producer. “I don't care what your breeding objective is if it makes sense for you,” says Jamie, “I just hope that you have one.” With no farm being the same as another, a breeding objective needs to be personalised to the goals of each individual business. But why are they so important? “That's how we can be profitable. We have to identify an end goal and we have to keep making consistent selection decisions that get us towards that goal. You won't see the impact of this year's bull decisions until five years down the road. If we don't have that objective in mind, we're just shooting in the dark. We're not heading towards that steady upward trajectory of the traits that really matter,” explains Jamie. So, once you know where you want to be, how do you get there? Breeding values, be it an ASBV, EBV or EPD are the best tool we have to reach that goal. Jamie does a great job of explaining how breeding values work and why results can vary. “I always ask producers, do you have siblings? Do you act the same, do you look the same? Light bulbs come on kind of at that point,” she shares. “In the beef cattle industry, we put pens of full sibling bulls together. It's a great way to get genetic uniformity, but it's not identical, right? They're as similar as they can be, but they're never identical.”Keeping in mind that there are always outliers is useful. “If we have a hundred full siblings, then we would expect the average performance of those hundred calves to be the parent average, right? Most of the calf crop will have a weight right around what we expect, but we're going to have outliers on either side,” says Jamie. “It's just a result of the shuffling of the DNA. A lot of times people expect it to be perfect and unfortunately with statistics, there's always outliers one way or the other.”Jamie points out, “We can get a good picture of the true genetic merit of those animals and which pieces of DNA they inherited from their sire or their dam. It's 50% both times, but there are 30 pairs of chromosomes and there are however many million base pairs that could have been inherited. And so we're able to get at the true genetic difference that those animals have, with genetics.”Read more here:https://blog.steakgenomics.org/Head Shepherd is brought to you by neXtgen Agri International Limited, we help livestock farmers get the most out of the genetics they farm with. Joining us today is Ashley Rhodes-Courter, author of the New York Times and international bestselling memoir, “Three Little Words,” and its sequal, “Three More Words.” She's an international keynote speaker, licensed clinical social worker, and founder of The Foundation for Sustainable Families.  Since her first national keynote at age 14, Ashley has shared her story with thousands in the United States and in more than 7 countries. By the age of 3 she was in Florida's foster care system where she spent almost 10 years being shuttled between 14 homes—some quite abusive—before being adopted from a children's home at the age of 12. We're going much deeper in today's show to discuss a topic that affects all communities—child abuse and neglect and how, through CASA, a National, non-profit court-appointed special advocate and guardian ad litem organization, communities and individuals are changing a child's life-story by advocating for children and youth who have experienced abuse or neglect.  And, how even just one small act of kindness or a little bit of encouragement can have a positive ripple effect on someone's life. In this episode, Ashley shares how the gift of a book from her fourth-grade teacher inspired her love of literature and writing, the impact her CASA had on her life, and how she came to write her first book, Three Little Words, which started in her teen years as an essay to raise money for college. The book is now being made into a major motion picture. And joining us from East-Central CASA in South Dakota, are Julie Wermers, Terri Mielitz, and Amy Henrich. We'll learn about the CASA organization, how it serves some of the most vulnerable children and youth in our communities, including those targeted for sex trafficking, kids affected by the opioid crisis, and advocating for children with incarcerated parents and preparing young adults to age out of the foster care system, plus we'll talk about the many ways we can all get involved. We hope after listening to Ashley's powerful story, you are inspired to learn more about CASA in your area. You can find Ashley Rhodes-Courter's books, “Three Little Words,” and “Three More Words,”  here or at many independent bookstores. The Nook on Main Street in downtown Brookings, South Dakota will soon have copies on their shelves. Disentangling the effects of metabolic cost and accuracy on movement vigor

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.02.08.527734v1?rss=1 Authors: Bruening, G. W., Sukumar, S., Courter, R. J., O'Brien, M. K., Ahmed, A. A. Abstract: On any given day, we make countless reaching movements to objects around us. While such ubiquity may suggest uniformity, each movement is actually unique in the speed with which it is made. Some movements are slow, while others are fast. These variations in reach speed have long been known to be influenced by accuracy constraints; we slow down when accuracy demands are high. However, in other forms of movement like walking, metabolic cost is the primary determinant of movement speed. Here we ask, what is the role of metabolic cost in determining speed of reaching movements? First we systematically measure the effect of increasing mass on the metabolic cost of reaching across a range of movement speeds. Next, in a sequence of three experiments, we examine how added mass affects preferred movement speeds in a simple reaching task with increasing accuracy requirements. We find that mass consistently increased metabolic cost and led to slower movements. Yet, intriguingly, preferred reach speeds were faster than metabolically optimal. We then demonstrate how a cost function that, critically, considers both accuracy and metabolic cost can explain preferred movement speeds across the range of conditions tested. Together, these findings provide a unifying framework to explain the combined effects of metabolic cost and accuracy on movement speed, and also highlight the integral role metabolic cost plays in determining many forms of movement. Since her first National Keynote at age 14, Ashley Rhodes-Courter has shared her story with thousands in the United States and in over 7 countries. Ashley Rhodes-Courter, MSW, is the quintessential American success story.  Born in 1985 to a single teen mother, by the age of 3 she was in Florida's foster care system where she spent almost ten years being shuttled between 14 homes—some quite abusive—before being adopted from a Children's Home at the age of twelve. Despite her ordeal, she excelled in school because she believed that, “my education was the one thing nobody could take from me.”  Early in her life she felt compelled to advocate for herself and the other children she lived with, particularly in the abusive foster homes. Her efforts and academic achievements landed her Eckerd College's Trustee Scholarship where she graduated with honors and ahead of schedule earning a double major in Communications and Theater and a double minor in Political Science and Psychology.  Ashley then went on to earn a Master's Degree in Social Work from the University of Southern California. During her undergraduate studies, she was one of 20 college students selected for the USA Today All-USA Academic Team and was named one of GLAMOUR Magazine's Top Ten College Women.  She was also selected as one of the four Golden BR!CK Award winners for outstanding advocacy for community change by DoSomething!. As part of their campaign, she was featured on 25 million bags of Cool Ranch Doritos. By the age of 22, Ashley had become a New York Times Bestselling Author. Her first book, “Three Little Words” is now an International Bestseller and has been published in at least 4 countries. Her second book, “Three More Words” debuted at #1 on Amazon Bestseller's List. Both books are used in classrooms across the country in various community and First Year Experience Collegiate programs. Ashley has received State, local, and National awards for her speaking, advocacy, and philanthropy. She has spoken on Capitol Hill and has been invited to the White House twice. “Three Little Words” is now being made into a major motion picture.

We are IN THE ROOM with the fabulous Courter Simmons! (aka drag queen Cacophony Daniels! Jersey Boys!) We talk about our love for Bette Midler because why would this episode be different than all the rest? Ever the inspiration, Courter began his career by taking a literal page out of Carol Burnett’s book and moved to NYC to pursue his dream. His drag queen persona – Cacophony Daniels - was born while he was on tour with Jersey Boys and she’s made quite a name for herself in NYC. Courter and his husband Jason also adopted an awesome kid and we get ALL the deets on how that happened! You can find Courter in Jersey Boys (sometimes!) and you can find Cacophony around town hosting things like the Drag Debutant Ball at Albatross in Astoria and Broadway Monday’s at Hardware Bar every Monday! @cacophonydaniels @courtersimmons @intheroompod @danakellycraig @sferezy IN THE ROOM WITH STEVEN & DANA is delightfully sponsored in part by Babe Rosé (@drinkbabe) and Broadway Crew (broadwaycrew)! We would be gob smacked into next week if you gave us a rating and review on iTunes! We so appreciate your lurve, shout outs, and support! XOXO

Ashley Rhodes-Courter is the quintessential American success story. Born in 1985 to a single teen mother, by the age of 3 she was in Florida’s foster care system where she spent almost ten years being shuttled between 14 homes—some quite abusive—before being adopted from a Children’s Home at the age of twelve. Despite her ordeal, she excelled in school and advocated for children in abusive foster homes. Since the age of 14, Ashley has spoke on behalf of the half-million children still in foster care in America by giving speeches throughout the U.S. and abroad. She has spoken on Capitol Hill, has been invited to the White House, and has taught at numerous colleges and conferences for elected officials, judges, social workers, policy makers, and families. On June 1, 2003, the New York Times Magazine published her grand prize-winning essay about her adoption day. She expanded her essay into a memoir, Three Little Words, which was published by Simon & Schuster in January 2008 and quickly became a New York Times bestseller. Her memoir is currently being made into a major motion picture. The book has been adopted by schools and communities as part of One School, One Book initiatives across the country. The 90s continue as we hit episode 94 of our live weekly broadcast. We were joined by Major General Amy Courter of Youngsoft (and, obviously, the military), Emily Alber of Mack Avenue Media, and Jeremiah from Daily Detroit. A great show, filled with some good information, some laughs, and the usual mayhem you've come to expect... The first segment, as always, kicked off with the week's stories, news and events that happened to catch our eyes. From the IRS hack that's left hundreds of thousands of people vulnerable to people renting cars so they can be Uber drivers, out to the lady who dropped off an Apple 1 at a recycling center with clearly no clue what she had and the freaking rumors about a freaking remake of Big Trouble in Little China... ...yeah, that might have caused a rant. In our second segment, we dove in with repeat guest Major General Amy Courter, who in addition to her military experience is also a Senior Vice President at Youngsoft.  We talked about her work at Youngsoft, the markets that they play in, and the specialties that they've cut out for themselves...but we also talked about the challenges facing our military veterans when they return from deployment and the transition back into the workforce.  Definitely a lot of good thoughts and opinions in here.  You can catch Youngsoft's job openings at http://www.youngsoft.com/careers Next up, we spoke with Emily Alber of Mack Avenue Media.  She's the fire behind a new social media consultancy that's really taking off.  Her clients include a non-profit that's helping youths downtown through boxing and tutoring (http://downtownyouthboxing.org/), a building that was once upon a time a pickle factory looking for new life as an event space like the art exhibit currently being hosted (http://www.dashboardcoop.org/detroitboomboom/) and others.  Go give her a like on Facebook over at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mack-Avenue-Media/686032238165255 Segment four was a good chat, as always, with Jeremiah of Daily Detroit.  From the policy conference on Mackinac Island last week to some cool open data stuff happening downtown (that you'll hear more about on our show next week), Jer's always got his finger on the pulse of what's going on around downtown, and Daily Detroit does a great job of covering what matters without the fluff and nonsense that so many other publications resort to these days... ...which is why he's been on our show more than once or twice. That's all for this week.  Tune in tomorrow (Wednesday) night for a little live broadcast from our networking event at Stray Cat Lounge on the 2nd anniversary of our first show, and we'll also be back live on Monday night with more guests and fun for your ears. Again, you can find our guests at: Youngsoft: http://www.youngsoft.com/careers Mack Avenue Media: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mack-Avenue-Media/686032238165255 Daily Detroit: http://www.dailydetroit.com/ [soundcloud url="https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/208549765" params="color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false" width="100%" height="166" iframe="true" /] As always, we can be found: On the web: http://www.ITinTheD.com On Meetup: http://www.meetup.com/ITintheD/ On LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=91763 On Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/ITintheD  On Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/ITintheD
