Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.– Friedrich Nietzsche, Beyond Good and EvilLetting go of our outrage against injustice is hard. Not gazing into the abyss doesn't mean turning a blind eye to harm, it means not fixating on it. It means letting go of the performative anger and actually working for the better.Notice, I didn't say the good or the best, but toward the better. Once we believe we know best or we are working for good, the focus becomes defeating evil or those who are wrong. What could be wrong with that?Change requires us to let goEveryone involved has to let go. If we are ever going to make progress against fascism, racism, sexism, homophobia, or transphobia, we have to let go of those qualities within ourselves and our society. If our focus is on those monsters who promote those qualities and not dismantling those systems, they win.It is so easy to be distracted by the words and actions of people working against justice. That is the plan. The more we focus on the spectacle, the less we focus on dismantling the systems of oppression and climate harm. The other side is being outrageous on purpose. They want us distracted, angry, and off message so they can win. What I am not sayingThis is not a call for civility. I do not believe that we have to take the high road just because they are taking the low road. Civility is a tool of colonialist oppression to discredit those they seek to oppress. It is a double standard applied to marginalized populations that they never have to live up to themselves. We should work to defeat dangerous politicians and stop authoritarianism. What I am sayingWe cannot take our eyes off the prize. Our actions need to be focused on achieving our goals, changing minds, and growing our ranks. We have to advocate for the changes we want to see and not simply against the other side.If we are nothing but an opposition, we will never achieve anything.Gazing into the abyssIt is all too easy to spend too much time watching what the other side is doing and ranting against it, while doing nothing to advance our causes. Yelling about a particular baddie is not the same as working for change.Naming monstersA monster cannot change. It is a monster's nature to do monstrous things. They are irredeemable and must be slayed. When we name something or someone a monster, we limit the options we have to take actions. We can no longer work for our cause, we have to work against them. What other options do we have?I am not saying there are not terrible people out there doing monstrous things, but the people are not the problem, the systems of oppression are.Becoming monstersWe all live in bubbles, surrounding ourselves from those who disagree and who are different from us. This creates a cycle of self-affirmation that blinds us to the thoughts, opinions, and pain of others. When I see an environmental activist defacing a famous work of art, I know they have hurt the cause. I live in a very conservative area that is suffering from the effects of climate change. Every time they do these stunts, they are making my work infinitely harder. They transformed themselves into a monster that support environmental harm. They are the best ally polluters have.Such actions revolt the natural allies living around me. They are pushed farther away from climate activism, and into the arms of the fossil fuel companies. Their protest harms the cause and they have become a monster in the eyes of those who should be their allies. This isn't a problem with civility or decorum. Their actions are so disconnected from the cause they are advocating for, it is indistinguishable from random violence. It feeds the narrative that climate activists are unhinged cult members who act irrationally. They are the best ally the fossil fuel companies have. They went out to slay monsters and became one.Letting go of monstersI am not saying we give up or give in. I am saying we have to let go of our focus on the monsters and demonstrate truth with power. Many years ago, there was an attempt to ban LGBT groups from having a space at a particular convention on the east coast because one queer man made himself into a monster and vilified all of us. Our response was to organize two simple actions for the next convention. We all wore IDIC pins on our con badges. This was a scifi convention with a strong focus on Star Trek. IDIC is the Vulcan symbol for Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combination. We circulated a simple list of talking points for when someone asked what the symbol meant. We also staged a dance in at the main dance where we all paired up into same-gender couples and took to the dance floor for every slow dance. Our project spread to the point where many heterosexual people paired up with a same-sex partner to join in the protest. The purpose of both actions was to demonstrate how many queer attendees and allies we had at the convention, and it worked. They changed their policies, allowing us to have panels and not to have to card people as they entered to ensure that no one under the age of 18 entered a queer themed panel. We fought for our people, and for the change we wanted to see, and not against the people working against us. This is how queer rights have always been pushed forward. From the Stonewall Uprising through Act Ups activism to today, we haven't always been civil or polite, but we kept our eyes on the prize. Look at Zooey Zephyr and how she is standing up now.The AbyssWhen we center our focus and effort on particular “monsters,” we make them out to be more powerful than they really are. They are not monsters. They are flawed, broken humans like the rest of us who have given into their foulest instincts. They are people to be pitied, not transformed into something greater than they are.As we stare into the abyss, watch all the bad things and creatures swimming through it, we are distracting ourselves from the cause.I don't want to spend my life filtering the abyss. I don't want to live for the abyss. If life is to have any meaning, we have to cultivate a vital, healthy environment that will over grow the abyss and starve the monsters of their means of support.Let go of the AbyssDon't ignore the bad things happening in the world, but let go of them. Do no harm to yourself in the name of the cause. They want us to be outraged, angry, and distracted. We need to be focused on building the change we want to see.Let go of the actions you cannot control and take hold of the actions you can. Don't fight the monsters. Make the world inhospitable for those monsters to thrive. Get full access to Creation's Paths at www.creationspaths.com/subscribe

Joanna Peña-Bickley is an inventor and a design technologist known as the mother of Cognitive Experience Design. Named one of Fortune's Most Powerful Women, she's been at the forefront of A.I. aided generative design, and has created her own framework with principles to ensure that A.I. enhances humans. Born a dyslexic child in San Antonio, TX, a thread throughout Joanna's unlikely career is crafting magical experiences whether it was inventing one of the first streaming video players for ABC or designing the first banking app on the Apple Watch for Citibank. She's also designed the first smart mobility platform for General Motors, invented new ambient intelligent Alexa Devices for Amazon, and also reimagined the world's mobility for Uber. A fan of science fiction and a Trekkie at heart, Joanna has always seen the link between fiction and invention. She's bringing this to Sensory6, her new A.I. company focusing on making people more resilient through bio wearable technology and human digital twins. The company is on a mission to augment our intelligence and give us superpowers to adapt. And in being unapologetically herself, she's also an avid organizer and advocate for women and girls in design and tech. She co-founded Designed By Us, a cooperative dedicated to accelerating gender equity in S.T.E.A.M.D, which is Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math, and Design education. Joanna believes that we all have the power within us to design a better future, and A.I. needs infinite diversity and infinite combinations to bring its promise of an equitable future into fruition. Hear how Joanna thinks about creativity and A.I., what shaped her career trajectory, her ethical framework, how we need to embrace – not ban A.I., the call for positive A.I. stories, and how she dares to design a better future, today. This week we are taking a departure from our typical focus on the fictional Star Trek Universe. Instead we are talking about real life Trek Legend Nichelle Nichols and the documentary “WOMAN IN MOTION.” The doc tells the story of the Uhura actor's work with real space travel at NASA and continuing Gene Roddenberry's vision of Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations. It's time once again to take a look at spinoff novelizations, and this time we're joined by Trekspert Dylan Roth to look at the era before the movies, before the Next Generation, when Star Trek was a ragtag multimedia conglomeration held together by fan obsession. The franchise took all kinds of strange and non-canonical turns in those dark days, and one of the biggest ones was The Final Reflection, a novel by celebrated SF author John M. Ford that paints a very different view of Star Trek and particularly the Klingon empire, one that diverged from the eventual path Trek took but nevertheless provided a guiding light for years afterwards. As the Vulcans say, Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations... This is an edited version of a much longer show, available for Patreon subscribers. With everything going on in this country, the idea of diversity has become a buzzword, and I am afraid it is a momentary meme and not something we are dedicated to. Some have finally had their eyes opened by the murder of George Floyd, but we can’t let this be the cause of the moment that we forget when the protests die down. Black Lives Matter. Diversity is not or at least should not be virtue signaling. We have to fundamentally change or all of this is for nothing. Gene Roddenberry said: “If humanity is to survive, we will have learned to take delight in the essential differences between people and between cultures. We will learn that differences in ideas and attitudes are a delight, part of life’s exciting variety, not something to fear.” That is how IDIC (Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combination) starts, but that is not the end of it. John (Yahya) Gardiner, Ford Comms Director: Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations 'Brown Car Guy & Buddies' In this episode I speak to John Gardiner who has been at Ford Motor Company for 30 years and currently has two jobs - Executive Director, Communications & Public Affairs, Ford of Britain & Ireland, and Corporate Communications, Ford of Europe. As well as a PR guru, he's also a Muslim revert, a student of Chinese and Malay Fighting skills, and of course a fellow Trekkie! We find out about his unique career path from selling classic American muscle at aged 12 to Ford Exec via a catering and Custom Car magazines. In light of the the lockdown from the COVID-19 Coronavirus and now the #BlackLivesMatter movement and new reports about BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) communities in the UK, the conversation inevitably turned to how a big car company like Ford deals with these issues. There is some encouraging information about that and the post-Lockdown response of the automotive industry, as well tantaslising insight into what's to come from Ford of Europe! Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations (IDIC) is from Star Trek and represents inclusiveness. It's the basis of Vulcan philosophy. “It represents a Vulcan belief (also Roddenberry’s belief) that beauty, growth, progress — all result from the union of the unlike.” And the symbol, a triangle intersecting a circle, with a stone in the center, represents this with unlike shapes – one smooth and one angular – combining together with a gemstone in the middle, “as the union of words and music creates song, or the union of marriage creates children. The circle can represent infinity, nature, woman, etc; the triangle can represent the finite, art, man, etc.” (Inside Star Trek 1) Get this https://amzn.to/2B25KFG https://amzn.to/30EUQ3C https://amzn.to/3dYpXuP https://amzn.to/2XVhDWV https://amzn.to/2Yv80NQ Please subscribe to my channel for more videos like this - and make sure you hit the bell icon to switch on notifications. This week on Episode 463 of Priority One --- We ‘Trek Out' Akiva Goldsman's Batman and Robin apology and what he has to say about Discovery, Bryan Fuller gets candid, and the cast of Star Trek Voyager reunite for a good cause! In Star Trek Gaming, Star Trek Online's No-win Scenario re-emerges, and says “To Hell With Honor,” and lastly we welcome Fazri Zubair of Lucid Sight's Crypto Space Commander! CQ: Would a season long “Year of Hell” be something you'd want to see as dedicated Star Trek Series? Akiva Goldsman Chats with Collider Last week, we told you about a Collider interview with Star Trek producer, director, and writer Akiva Goldsman. On Friday May 29th, the video of that interview was posted to Collider's youtube channel, and it contained a slew of new information. Goldman apologized for “Batman and Robin” - it was heart-felt, but we're not sure it was enough...BUT...he also talked a bit more about Star Trek. Strap in, because this week we've got AUDIO! Goldsman told Collider he was not involved with Discovery's third season, but did have some information on what's to come, saying “So Alex [Kurtzman] has really been deeply involved in the building out of what season three looks like and what that post-Federation future is. I have seen some of it because, you know, we all work together in the same - or we did - place with lots of Star Trek pictures on the wall and editing bays and things, you know. It seems awesome to me. It's not a final frontier but it is a new one.” - Akiva Goldsman Goldsman also revealed an interesting tidbit about Discovery's jump to the distant future: “We all helped build that idea, all the way back to season one. Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg, the original showrunners from season one, that idea dates all the way back to that. I think it is a spectacular idea, which is to go post the timeline we know.” - Akiva Goldsman Bryan Fuller Talks “Voyager” Bryan Fuller is to Voyager what Jonathan Frakes is to Next Gen. Every time the man speaks, he leaves juicy audio clips in his wake. This week, the former-Voyager staff writer sat down with the la “Inglorious Treksperts” podcast to celebrate Voyagers Silver Anniversary, and sprinkled trek nuggets all up in our sauce. Fuller discussed the push-and-pull between Voyager's creative team and then-Trek-Head-Rick-Berman, saying: ”I think what was interesting in the evolution of the show, which you could sense the creative struggle. And I witnessed the creative struggle when I was working there. And there was an appetite for these bigger, bolder science fiction stories. And there was a lot of resistance from Rick Berman in embracing them because he was chasing The Next Generation and was not allowing Voyager to be the show that it could be.” - Bryan Fuller But Fuller wasn't done. He went on to describe the writer's room's plan to make one of Star Trek's best two-parters - “Year of Hell” - a season long arc, and Berman's reaction. So, we would go back to it every once in a while to remind the audience that's the larger story. But because Deep Space Nine had made Rick Berman allergic to serialized storytelling, violently so [we did not]” - Bryan Fuller When asked why Fuller thought Deep Space Nine was able to get away with things Voyager wasn't, Fuller pulled no punches. "Ira [Steven Behr] didn't give a [EXPLETIVE] what Rick Berman said, and Brannon [Braga] did. Ira was like, “I don't care, you're wrong. This is what we're doing and fire me if you want to.' No-Win Scenario by Advisorypanda The Event Campaign II resumes on June 4th for PC, and on June 30th for console, but at the greatest cost. Apologies to Captain Kirk, but the No-Win Scenario is real and it is here. Playing either the "Arena of Sompek" or "Kobayashi Maru" TFOs every day during the 21-day event will grant you honor and glory, along with 50 Event Campaign Progress and Daily Progress towards the No-Win Scenario Event grand prize. The grand prize includes 3 Featured TFO boxes, 25,000 dilithium ore, and a new account-unlocked ship with Admiralty card: the scaling T4 Kobayashi Maru Freighter for Fed and Fed-aligned characters, and the Tong'Duj Freighter for KDF and KDF-aligned characters. While Freighters are as well-suited for combat as a Ferengi with an ear infection [Ferengi scream here], they offer on-board access to amenities like the Exchange, Bank, expanded Transwarp, and special Trade duty officer missions. Even better, you can go to and from your Freighte's interior from any other ship rather than fully switching between the two. Link to the stats in the show notes. Note that, while it's possible to do everything right and still lose in life, that's not quite true for the event. The event TFOs now have designated end points (Maru at level 6, Sompek at level 7) and cannot be failed before reaching them. Which makes them "Always-Win Scenarios," if we're being honest. Also, the TFOs' untimed/infinite versions will also be disabled but the event TFOs will not have cooldowns. So will you find an honorable end as you fly into the face of certain doom? How many petaQs will you take with you, as the dread tyrant's lighting turns your teammates into scorch marks? You'll have plenty of chances to find out. Pray that today is a good day to die, for you will not see another. This week on Episode 463 of Priority One --- We ‘Trek Out’ Akiva Goldsman’s Batman and Robin apology and what he has to say about Discovery, Bryan Fuller gets candid, and the cast of Star Trek Voyager reunite for a good cause! In Star Trek Gaming, Star Trek Online’s No-win Scenario re-emerges, and says “To Hell With Honor,” and lastly we welcome Fazri Zubair of Lucid Sight’s Crypto Space Commander! CQ: Would a season long “Year of Hell” be something you’d want to see as dedicated Star Trek Series? Akiva Goldsman Chats with Collider Last week, we told you about a Collider interview with Star Trek producer, director, and writer Akiva Goldsman. On Friday May 29th, the video of that interview was posted to Collider’s youtube channel, and it contained a slew of new information. Goldman apologized for “Batman and Robin” - it was heart-felt, but we’re not sure it was enough...BUT...he also talked a bit more about Star Trek. Strap in, because this week we’ve got AUDIO! Goldsman told Collider he was not involved with Discovery’s third season, but did have some information on what’s to come, saying “So Alex [Kurtzman] has really been deeply involved in the building out of what season three looks like and what that post-Federation future is. I have seen some of it because, you know, we all work together in the same - or we did - place with lots of Star Trek pictures on the wall and editing bays and things, you know. It seems awesome to me. It’s not a final frontier but it is a new one.” - Akiva Goldsman Goldsman also revealed an interesting tidbit about Discovery’s jump to the distant future: “We all helped build that idea, all the way back to season one. Fuller discussed the push-and-pull between Voyager’s creative team and then-Trek-Head-Rick-Berman, saying: ”I think what was interesting in the evolution of the show, which you could sense the creative struggle. And I witnessed the creative struggle when I was working there. And there was an appetite for these bigger, bolder science fiction stories. And there was a lot of resistance from Rick Berman in embracing them because he was chasing The Next Generation and was not allowing Voyager to be the show that it could be.” - Bryan Fuller But Fuller wasn’t done. He went on to describe the writer’s room’s plan to make one of Star Trek’s best two-parters - “Year of Hell” - a season long arc, and Berman’s reaction. "The “Year of Hell” and the behind-the-scenes drama around trying to craft not only that episode, but that season, was fascinating because we wanted “Year of Hell” to last the entire season. We wanted to see Voyager get its [EXPLETIVE] kicked every episode and through that season was going to be marbled the story of Annorax and the time ship that was changing things. So, we would go back to it every once in a while to remind the audience that’s the larger story. But because Deep Space Nine had made Rick Berman allergic to serialized storytelling, violently so [we did not]” - Bryan Fuller When asked why Fuller thought Deep Space Nine was able to get away with things Voyager wasn’t, Fuller pulled no punches. "Ira [Steven Behr] didn’t give a [EXPLETIVE] what Rick Berman said, and Brannon [Braga] did. Ira was like, “I don’t care, you’re wrong. This is what we’re doing and fire me if you want to.’ He was always like ‘Fire me. If you don’t like what I’m doing, fire me, but this is what we’re doing. Gothic Fiction in Star Trek: Voyager. Even starship captains, with the whole galaxy to explore, need a bit of mindless escapism from time to time. While Jean-Luc Picard donned his fedora and trench coat to live out a holographic fantasy life as the surly gumshoe Dixon Hill, Kathryn Janeway’s choice of entertainment might seem—at least on the surface—even less in keeping with her “real” personality. In three early episodes of Star Trek: Voyager—“Cathexis,” “Learning Curve,” and “Persistence of Vision”—we see her indulge in a holonovel that appears to combine elements of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre (1847), Henry James’s The Turn of the Screw (1898), and Rebecca, the 1938 novel by Dame Daphne du Maurier. In her holographic escape from life in the Delta Quadrant, Janeway played the role of a wide-eyed governess who finds herself at the heart of a sinister gothic mystery. In this episode of Primitive Culture, hosts Clara Cook and Duncan Barrett take a look at the literary influences on Captain Janeway’s Lambda One holonovel, considering questions of female agency, repressed sexuality, and the apparent value of low-brow entertainment to Starfleet’s high-ranking officers. We also question whether a show as bright and cheery as Star Trek: Voyager can ever truly accommodate Gothicism. Your Faith Journey - Finding God Through Words, Song and Praise
Before I begin, I want to dedicate this message, the service today, and the work we are doing to Stanley, Amanda, Oscar, Rodolfo, Antonio, Darryl, Angel, Juan, Luis, Cory, Tevin, Deonka, Simon, Leroy, Mercedez, Peter, Juan, Paul, Frank, Miguel, Javier, Jason, Eddie, Anthony, Christopher, Alejandro, Brenda, Gilberto, Kimberly, Akyra, Luis, Geraldo, Eric, Joel, Jean, Enrique, Jean, Xavier, Christopher, Yilmary, Edward, Shane, Martin, Jonathan, Juan, Luis, Franky, Luis, and Jerald. Also for Trayvon, Sandra, Kathryn, Sean, Eric, Rekia, Philando, Amadou, Mike, Kimani, Kenneth, Travares, Tamir, Aiyana, and Freddie. Next, I have to let you know that I don't believe in God, I don't believe Jesus Christ existed and died for our sins, and I don't believe the Bible is the word of God. Now that pastor Ellen is questioning why she let me preach today and some of the congregation may be in shock, let me explain. These statements aren't true right now and not true most of the time, but I have my moments of doubt when I truly feel I don't believe. Many people may find that strange and question what type of Christian I am with such doubt, but I can tell you there is one that loves me and supports me no matter how much I doubt, and that is God. God loves me for who I am, a doubting sinning gay male Christian. We all fall short of perfection no matter how hard we try, but God still loves us. It is because of this love that, especially in my darkest moments, I continually return to God. That is the beauty of God's love - it knows no bounds and is unlimited. God loves all. Period, end of statement, no exclusions. God may not love some of our actions, but even with those actions, God loves us deep down and wants us to be reconciled together. God's unbounded love allows us to enjoy the beauty of diversity. If God loves all, then how can we not also love all. While pastors and others with education on the bible can easily find and quote scripture or other people's analysis of scripture, I turn to something I know and love - Star Trek. From an episode of The Original Series, Miranda says “The glory of creation is in its infinite diversity.” to which Spock responds, “And the way our differences combine to create meaning and beauty.” This reflects the basis for Vulcan philosophy, IDIC or Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations. You can also think of diversity by thinking of a piano or other musical instrument. A piano has 88 keys for 88 notes. That is all, just 88 different notes. It doesn't take long to play them one at a time and the end result isn't all that interesting. It is when you combine them in various ways, chords, rhythms, dynamics, etc. that you create a very diverse sound. Think about all the songs that have been written and played over the years. No two exactly alike - all from 88 little notes. Each of us has various aspects about who we are - our age, gender identity, marital status, race, height, weight, education, and so many more. There are many that are the same age as us, the same gender, same education background, etc. However, it is the very unique combination in each of us, that makes us a special unique child of God. No one else is exactly like us, but yet we are all alike in that God loves us exactly how we are. As I said before - God loves all. Period, end of statement. I'm going to take a little sidebar here to explain something you'll find the service during the prayers. You'll notice that our normal response to the prayers isn't “Hear our prayer.” but instead, “Receive our prayer.” I first remember hearing this response at our recent synod assembly and also at the worship service we had yesterday as part of the Lutherans Always Reforming synod event at University Lutheran. Our synod's Bishop - Craig Satterlee explains it best when he says “The deaf community said to me, what does it say to us when we talk about God hearing our prayer when many deaf people don't hear of course and they don't speak their prayers, they might silently make them.” Bishop Satterlee asked them what they suggested instead of Hear our prayer, and they said to use Receive our prayer. This is one of many ways we can minorly tweak a worship service to help be more inclusive to allow people to more easily feel God's love for them. Another example is to use the phrase “siblings in Christ” instead of “brothers and sisters in Christ” since some people don't identify as either male or female so they might struggle viewing themselves as a brother or a sister. So, now we know God loves us, what do we do? We are called to share God's love with others. Today's gospel says “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” So just as Jesus saw this and called the disciples, we are being called to go out to the world being a shepherd and to spread the good news of God's love for all. While all deserve to hear the message of God's love, reality is there are certain communities of people where the message needs to be shared louder and harder as they have and continue to struggle to believe that there is a loving and caring God out there for them, since so often society and sometimes churches tell them the complete opposite. This brings me back to the list of names I dedicated this message to. These are the 49 people who were murdered about one year ago in Orlando, most of them part of the LBGTQ community and most Latinx. Also the 13 (that we know of) transgender individuals who have been killed this year, and a list of some black people that people feel were killed unjustly. It is because of these and the hundreds and thousands more people whose lives end too early simply because of who they are, that we must hear God's summons to us to spread the message of love and peace. These people and many other people struggle knowing that God's love is real, because society around them often tells them they aren't loved because of some aspect of their diverse nature. In fact, growing up I struggled greatly with the duality of my personality - being gay and being a Christian. For the longest time I lived almost two separate lives because I could not reconcile the two worlds together in my mind. Living in the Upper Peninsula and the silence from the church didn't help matters. When I turned to the bible for help that really didn't help matters either. When reading Leviticus 18:22 “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination.” I thought that the notes provided would help me understand and reconcile how this pertains to my life and feelings, but I was wrong, since the notes said “Several abominations, or wicked actions, are listed here: …. Having homosexual relations…. Society today takes some of these practices lightly, even trying to make them acceptable. But they are still sins in God's eyes. If you consider them acceptable, you are not judging by God's standards.” This is why we as individuals and we as Faith Lutheran Church and we as the universal Christian church are called to share God's love - people need to know that their creator loves them unconditionally and wants to be in relationship with them. I must say, that when reading through today's bulletin, I am very pleased with how we share God's love through our actions to all kinds of diverse people. We serve the young through VBS, we serve the more life-experienced people through our 60 +/- group, we serve the economically less fortunate through the Arrow Tree Food Pantry, we serve those who care for others with our caregiver support group, we care for those with physical or mental concerns by providing worship services at the Willows and the Dobie Road center, we care for people of all races with events planned by our forum planning team, and through today, our welcoming statement, and the RIC designation we show that we care and love all God's children - no questions asked. Now, why do we do this? Well, to summarize, we do it because we are Christians who are Lutheran. The start of the 2nd reading today gives us a big hint as well, “Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God.” A few years ago, I was having a conversation with someone about why I did so much for the church and the community - the conversation lead to doing good works to gain favor with God. I said “No, that isn't why I do it, we don't need good works to get into heaven.” They then asked me what motivated me to do this if it wasn't required. I said, which I think is a good summary of the core Lutheran belief (Pastor can correct me later if I'm wrong), that “God loves me, God sent Jesus to die for my sins, I am therefore saved by God's grace through faith alone. This frees me from the bondage of sin.” Ok, so that still doesn't quite say why I do good works - but think of it this way - someone gives you a wonderful gift, something so expensive you could never buy it yourself. How do you respond? With thanks! You are probably willing to freely do something for the gift giver as well. Thus, why I work to serve my Lord - I have been given the biggest and best gift ever - unconditional love and eternal life in peace and glory - so I respond with thanksgiving by working to take care of God's world. Or to put it another way, that fits perfectly with today, Paul, in his 2nd letter to the Corinthians, says “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God.” (2 Corinthians 5:17-20) So, as Christ's ambassadors, as we are reconciled to God, let us reconcile the world to God by sharing God's love for all. Amen!
Norm's Reflections on The Kelvin Era Movies. Over the last several shows on Standard Orbit - specifically episodes 133 and 134, the Commodore (Norman C. Lao) did not have the opportunity to participate in all of the thought provoking and exciting conversations as The Chief (Ken Tripp), Mr. AtoZ (Jeffrey Harlan) and new Standard Orbit crewmember Zach Moore delved deeply into the Kelvin Era cinematic universe. On the cusp of the epically anticipated Star Trek BEYOND, Norm really wanted to participate in his own way. So he decided to pull rank here and record his own thoughts on this new movie universe. Admittedly he was ashamed of his attitude towards Star Trek 2009 and in this Supplemental Commodore's Log entry, he confesses how his fandom almost stalled as his love of the Original Series blinded him to the very tenant that Star Trek was built upon: IDIC...Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations. Challenged by that very ideal and axiom of TOS, Norm makes that very same plea to the Star Trek fandom at large and hopes that we all as the fanbase strive to understand the current state of Star Trek and move forward in a collective and positive manner. The team takes a bit of a break from heavier topics this week to discuss the nature of beauty, and what it means to describe and participate in beauty. The conversation veers philosophical as Jeff, Mona and Allen discuss wonder, love and transformation, and ultimately where God might be in relation to it. They wrap up with a silly game similar to Scattergories, which is much more difficult to play over the air than they imagined.
