The former president's post-presidential legacy has had a lasting impact on today's Middle East. President Carter was known for brokering the Egypt-Israel peace treaty between Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin, which has lasted over four decades. However, he was also the first national leader of his stature to openly embrace Hamas, to accuse Israel of “apartheid”, and to legitimize Hamas's slaughtering of Jews through suicide bombings and other forms of terrorism, during and following the Second Intifada. How did President Carter go from an engaged diplomat working for peace between Israel and Egypt to championing Hamas and its narrative of Israeli “apartheid”? To discuss the paradox of President Carter when it comes to Israel, and his impact on current day events in the Middle East, our guest is Ken Stein. Dr. Kenneth W. Stein was a close confidante of President Carter's, with whom he co-authored books and papers on the Middle East. Ken ran The Carter Center at Emory University, where he was also the Middle East Fellow. He also ran the Israel Studies Department at Emory. He has published numerous books and scholarly articles. “Making Peace Among Arabs and Israelis: Lessons from Fifty Years of Negotiating Experience”, authored by Ken: https://www.amazon.com/Making-peace-among-Arabs-Israelis/dp/B002X78MGW Book discussed in this episode: https://tinyurl.com/4h7pmwzf Recent article by Ken Stein: https://m.jpost.com/international/article-835320
Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Diplomatic reporter Lazar Berman joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan on today's episode. In the past several months, Ireland has formally recognized the State of Palestine, it said that it would execute an arrest warrant on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and it also backed South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. So in response to all of this, last week it was announced that for first time, Israel would close an embassy of an EU member state. Ireland is often considered the most pro-Palestinian country in the EU and public opinion deeply identifies with the Palestinians, which they view as an occupied people. We talk about how Ireland came to this ideology and delve into a period in which the nationalist aspirations of Irish and pre-state Israelis coincided. For news updates, please check out The Times of Israel’s ongoing live blog. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. US bureau chief Jacob Magid joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan from Chicago for today's episode. Talks to bring about a ceasefire and hostages-for-prisoners are “on the brink of collapsing,” according to a Politico report, citing two unnamed US officials and one unnamed Israeli official. Magid explains the significance of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's nixed audience with Qatar's Emir Tamim Al-Thani after sitting down with top leaders in Israel and Egypt and weighs in on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's mixed messaging with the families of slain soldiers and Hamas hostages. The Democratic National Convention began Monday in Chicago. After his speech, US President Joe Biden made a statement regarding the hostage release negotiations in which he accused Hamas of “backing away” from a hostage deal with Israel that would halt the ongoing fighting in Gaza. We hear of the statement's strategic purpose, as well as disturbances during Biden's speech. The first two days of the convention spotlighted a number of well-known Jews. Magid highlights their speeches and discusses the Hostage Square exhibit set up near the convention center. Finally, we learn about what anti-Israel demonstrations have taken place so far -- and what may be on the horizon. For news updates, please check out The Times of Israel's ongoing live blog. Discussed articles include: Blinken urges ‘maximum flexibility' from Israel and Hamas in hostage-ceasefire talks Biden says Hamas ‘backing away' from hostage-ceasefire deal, as Blinken heads to Egypt Israel activists erect ‘Hostage Square' in Chicago on sidelines of Democratic convention Anti-Israel protests fail to overshadow first day of Democratic Party confab Pro-Palestinian demonstrators charge police line outside Israeli consulate in Chicago Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you get your podcasts. Egypt and Israel have officially been at peace for the last 40 years, thanks to a treaty President Jimmy Carter brokered at Camp David in 1978. But Egyptian officials are threatening to rip up the agreement because Israel is vowing to send its troops into Rafah, just across the Egyptian border in Gaza. And, Kenya's Kelvin Kiptum was a fast-rising star in the world of marathon runners. But over the weekend, he died in a tragic car accident. Also, there's a growing rift between the families of hostages about whether to push for a ceasefire or continue to fight Hamas. The majority is adamant about a ceasefire, but a small group of families also formed a group opposing negotiations with Hamas. Plus, "doping Olympics" gets its first athlete.
The Egyptian regime would hardly shed any tears if Hamas – which they view like the outlawed Muslim brotherhood – was destroyed. Yet Cairo is threatening to abrogate the historic peace treaty with Israel if the IDF goes through with its planned invasion of Rafah and takeover of the Philadelphia corridor along the frontier. Ruth Wasserman Lande, a former member of Knesset and deputy ambassador to Egypt and today a research fellow at the Misgav Institute for National Security, said that Israel needs to beef up its strategic dialogue with Egypt. She outlined to reporter Arieh O'Sullivan some of Israel's leverages it can exercise with Egypt. (photo: Tsafrir Abayov/AP)See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Last Saturday, supporters and opponents of Eritrea's president, Isaias Afwerki, confronted one another in violent clashes. Yet rather than in Asmara, Eritrea's capital city, this confrontation took place in the streets of south Tel Aviv. In the second half of the 2000s, east African migration to Israel began to accelerate. Since then, in part due to changes in labor policies and law enforcement and in part to a barrier wall erected along the Egypt-Israel border, the number of new east African migrants has fallen precipitously. Nevertheless, although statistics are hard to come by with great precision, there are probably around 40,000 non-Jewish African migrants living in Israel today. What brings these mainly Ethiopian, Eritrean, and Sudanese immigrants to the cities and towns of Israel? And how does and how should Israel distinguish between those seeking humanitarian asylum and those looking for work opportunities and social benefits? These questions have become major points of debate in Israel. Some argue that the state must act in the world as a corrective to the Jewish experience of statelessness in history—that since Jews have so often been migrants and refugees and dependent on the help of others, Israel must help others in need when it can. Others argue that Israel—the political answer to the problems of Jewish statelessness—has an overriding moral obligation to welcome and to secure the lives and liberties of Jews—that it has a special obligation to pursue the ingathering of the Jewish diaspora and so to make a distinction between Jewish and non-Jewish immigrants. To discuss these issues, Yonatan Jakubowicz, formerly an advisor to Israel's Minister of Interior, and a founder of the Israeli Immigration Policy Center, joins Mosaic editor Jonathan Silver. Musical selections in this podcast are drawn from the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, op. 31a, composed by Paul Ben-Haim and performed by the ARC Ensemble.

In one of his last official acts before vacating the office he held since spring 2020, Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz went out of his way to praise Egypt as a peaceful neighbor and strategic partner. Gantz reacted furiously to a statement by a junior but crucial member of Benjamin Netanyahu's emerging coalition, who insisted Egypt is an enemy of the Jewish State. Dr. Rasmus discusses his latest published article, ‘Afghanistan & the American Imperial Project' (see his blog, http://jackrasmus.com, for free copy), explaining the US retreat in Afghanistan has to do with the inability of the US to maintain the costs of empire in the middle east (not just Afghanistan) and simultaneously pay for the cost of the new ‘wars' looming on the horizon. The wars in the middle east since 2001 have officially cost $6.4T according to the US oversight office, SIGAR. However, that's only for Afghanistan ($1-$2T) and Iraq. If Syria/Isis, Libya, naval blockade of Iran, US financing Saudi Arabia's war in Yemen, annual handouts in aid to Egypt & Israel, Somalia, and other ‘operations' in the region are concerned, the total cost the past 20 years is easily $10 trillion. Rasmus explains the US empire cannot continue funding $500B/yr. on average, while it faces new costs of empire in the new wars: the nextgeneration tech war with China, the cybersecurity war with Russia & others, and the ‘war' against Nature itself as the US scrambles to deal with climate change. Rasmus further notes the middle east wars have been financed as the US cut taxes by $15 trillion over the 20 yrs. The result of $10T cost as $15T taxes cut is annual budget deficits > $1T and cumulated deficits approaching $28T. Imperial financing of new wars will have to change, as the US shifts focus from the ‘old wars' of middle east to protect oil (the US no longer needs) to the ‘new wars' with China, Russia & Nature. The US empire is not imploding. It is restructuring, Rasmus concludes.

In this episode of Political Bark, I have the pleasure of speaking with Ambassador Youssef, currently in Washington D.C (See bio below). I ask about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, especially in regards to Prime Minister Netanyahu's annexation plans. What are the international stances on the annexation? How are France, Germany, Jordan and Egypt forming a never before seen "New Quartet" , asking for more negotiations instead of a escalation of the conflict; and what are the possible future scenarios for the conflict; is there any way to achieve lasting peace, perhaps modeled on the peace agreements between Egypt-Israel or Jordan-Israel? Find out in today's episode. Biography: Ambassador Hesham Youssef was a career diplomat with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Egypt. This episode focuses on the first Arab-Israeli peace breakthrough, the Camp David Accords of 1978. Camp David resulted from Egyptian president Anwar Sadat’s electrifying visit to Jerusalem. It also required political courage from the other two leaders involved—President Jimmy Carter and Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin, who each took risks that put them at odds with domestic allies. The resultant Egypt-Israel peace treaty has had a remarkable impact on both countries, including an end to decades of interstate wars. And it endures today despite facing many obstacles, including Sadat’s assassination. Host David Makovsky discusses this major decision point with Dr. Ken Stein, who has been a professor of contemporary Middle Eastern history, political science, and Israel studies at Emory University for forty-three years. Ken has written several books on regional peace negotiations, including Heroic Diplomacy: Sadat, Kissinger, Carter, Begin, and the Quest for Arab-Israeli Peace.Audio clips used:RR7748A MIDDLE EAST SADAT'S VISIT TO ISRAELMiddle East: Sadat's Visit to Israel (B) See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This episode discusses the Johnson administration’s policy in the weeks leading up to the 1967 Six Day War. As that conflict drew near, two Israeli missions to the United States, led by Abba Eban and Meir Amit, encountered the same official focus on Vietnam, yet produced different results by asking different questions. In that sense, 1967 was a major turning point not only in Israel’s history, but also in the history of the U.S.-Israel relationship. Host David Makovsky discusses this major decision point with William Quandt, who served with the National Security Council during the Nixon and Carter administrations and took part in the U.S. negotiating team for the Camp David Accords and Egypt-Israel peace treaty in the late 1970s. A longtime professor at the University of Virginia, he has authored several books on U.S. Middle East policy, including Decade of Decision: American Policy Toward the Arab-Israeli Conflict, 1967-76. Introduction: 400 years without a prophet, 400 years without an angelic visit or a miracle. Sure there had been some providential victories in the Maccabean wars, but like the 400 years of captivity in Egypt Israel were in a place of oppression under Roman rule and spiritually poor and in need of light and deliverance. God’s people needed a new Exodus, a new Moses, a new crushing of Pharaoh, a new redemption and ransom from slavery, a new Passover Lamb. And now that time has come in the preparation of the way for the coming of the Messiah with the coming of John the Baptist. The first light of the new dawn bringing in the new age where God is going to fulfil His promises starts in the lives of some regular faithful saints in Zechariah and Elizabeth. Several things strike us as we go through verses 5-25. Firstly, we want to appreciate how Zechariah and Elizabeth are typical saints and show us some of the typical ways in which God works in our lives. Secondly, we want to note these first descriptions of John the Baptist and how God fulfils prophecy. And thirdly, we want to watch the faltering faith of Zechariah in his interaction with the angel Gabriel. All of this to bring into view the miraculous and wonderful way God works through the lives of ordinary people like Zechariah and Elizabeth, like you and me. So on the one hand what we see here is atypical and will only ever happen once, for the Messiah is only incarnated once and the messenger who prepares the way is only born once; but on the other hand God works in His usual ways, ways in which He is also working in our lives today. Reflecting on the 40th anniversary of the Egypt-Israel peace treaty, Kurtzer-Ellenbogen says, “One of the big factors with the Egypt-Israel agreement was … bold, courageous leadership that was willing to make unprecedented moves … That’s of course eventually what’s going to need to happen to come to an agreement between the Israelis and Palestinians.”

And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land. Gen 12:10 And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph for to buy corn; because that the famine was so sore in all lands. Gen 41:57 Let us review. The deeds/events that happened to the patriarchs are a sign and a prophecy of what will happen to their descendants. Biblical history is prophecy. In this session, we look at some specific examples of this principle: *Abraham’s goes down to Egypt because of a famine *This foreshadows and prophesies to when the children of Israel go down to Egypt *Plagues come upon Pharoah’s home because he has Sarah in the household *This foreshadows and prophesies to the 10 plagues of Egypt in Exodus *Abraham leaves Egypt rich with cattle, with silver and with gold *The children of Israel leave Egypt with cattle, with silver and with gold In this session, we also look at the covenant that Yeshua cut with Abraham in Genesis 15 and see how this prophesies of Israel’s exile to the nations and their ultimate redemption.
