Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn had the impossible task of rebuilding a failed MMO, and its music had to help redefine what Final Fantasy XIV could be. In today's Daily Fix:FF7 Remake Trilogy director Naoki Hamaguchi isn't a fan of Sony's decision to stop supporting physical PS5 discs. Speaking at FF14 Fan Fest, Hamaguchi said it would be, quote, "a real shame for that culture to disappear," referring to physical media in games. He also said he's pushed for a physical release of the upcoming Final Fantasy 7: Revelations, but Square Enix has not made a final decision yet. In other news, Xbox Game Pass games for August have been announced, and the trial for Gears of War: E-Day leads the pack. And finally, Amazon and Dave Bautista are reportedly in talks for the star to replace Ryan Hurst in the Gears of War live-action series. Hurst was injured earlier this year on set, and recovery will apparently take too long for them to wrap production on time (not to mention, child co-star Callum Vinson, who may age out of the role during Hurst's recovery).

Final Fantasy V got a sequel, but it's not the kind you'd expect. Released as a four-part anime OVA in 1994, Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals takes place 200 years after the SNES game and follows a new cast of heroes trying to protect the elemental crystals. Despite its connection to Final Fantasy V, this OVA looks, sounds, and often feels detached from the game that inspired it. In this episode, we explore the anime's unusual production history, Hironobu Sakaguchi's limited involvement, director Rintaro's radically different artistic approach, the bizarre English localization, and whether this forgotten sequel captures any of the spirit of Final Fantasy at all.
