Murals salute this history, and you canincreasingly find such references in the downtown area. One of the main topics is Rhinelander'slegendary Hodag, which celebrates 130 years in existence in 2023. The legend has received nationalattention since its inception, getting mentions on Scooby Doo episodes and a shout-out in one of J.K.Rowling's books. The Hodag still looms large, having just been named the best high school mascot in thecountry. We discuss how the Hodag has changed over years, the small statues of hodags around town(and by the way, you can pose with the World's Largest Hodag statue at the Rhinelander Chamber), andhow you can go around and visit the hodag statues and win prizes. We also cover other places to visit in Rhinelander, from historic locales to emerging restaurants and shops that showcase the increasing diversity in cuisineand recreation options in town. Today I have Brady Lowe, founder of Taste Network. Started in 2002, he's currently on a mission to disrupt, and rethink the typical food marketing strategies, forge new online possibilities, and partner with and help promote sustainable, ethical, and delicious food and drinks from around the world. You might know Brady from the Cochon 555 events that he put on. But you might not know that he separated from the Cochon 555 brand a couple of years ago, which was one of the things I wanted to talk to him about. Building something that you love, and then letting it go, possibly seeing it go down in flames along the way. But Brady is still going strong with other aspects of Taste Network. We talk about the future of the food events industry, and discuss supply chain issues, especially as it related to farms in the early days of Covid. And a few years ago Brady came under fire for posting a racially insensitive photo from one of his events on Cochon's Instagram page. There was a considerable fallout the days surrounding it, and I wanted to give Brady a couple of minutes to speak on that.Sponsor- The United States Personal Chef AssociationThe Covid pandemic has clearly redefined the world of dining. Despite over 110,000 restaurants closing around the country, people still want the ambiance and social connectivity that is so critical to the dining experience. Over the past 27 years, the world of the personal chef has grown in importance to fulfill those dining needs. While the pandemic certainly upended the restaurant experience, it provided an Avenue for personal chefs to close that dining gap. Central to all of that is the United States Personal Chef Association. Representing nearly 1,000 chefs around the US and Canada, USPCA provides a strategic backbone for those chefs that includes liability insurance, training, communications, certification, and more. One of the big upcoming events for USPCA is their annual conference scheduled July 7-10 at the Hyatt Regency Sarasota, FL. Featuring a host of speakers and classes, the conference is a way for chefs to hone their skills and network with like-minded businesspeople. For those who supply the industry, it's a chance to reach not just decision-makers but the actual buyers of products. Contact Angela Prather at aprather@uspca.com1-800-995-2138 extension 705https://www.uspca.com/===========Brady Lowe and Taste Network===========Taste NetworkBrady's InstagramDrinkRealSpain.com==========================CHEFS WITHOUT RESTAURANTS==========================If you enjoy the show, and would like to support it financially, check out our Patreon, or you can donate through Venmo or Buy Me a Coffee. Get the Chefs Without Restaurants NewsletterVisit Our Amazon Store (we get paid when you buy stuff)Chefs Without Restaurants Facebook pageChefs Without Restaurants private Facebook groupChefs Without Restaurants InstagramFounder Chris Spear's personal chef business Perfect Little Bites

Foodies will love this one! Tanya Vora of SpiceUp advocates for people impacted by the immigrant experience through food events. Each event highlights the culture of a chef impacted by the immigrant experience. Typically, this means an immigrant or first-generation immigrant. Tanya shares the story of their event with Bonifacio, hosted by a mother-daughter duo. At this point, SpiceUp hosted food events with cultural themes connected to Mexico, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. These events were created to showcase people while giving them a proper platform to share stories of their culture. Tanya understands the immigrant experience first-hand from being the child of immigrants. Her family came from India, and even her older siblings were raised in India. She shared her experience of finding her place between two cultures. When Tanya goes to India, she tells me it’s clear that she is not fully Indian. Habits and certain cultural nuances she embodies are American. Of course this makes sense, she was raised in America. On the other side, she reflected on growing up in a predominantly caucasian environment, where there were more obvious differences between her and her peers. Her ability to understand others comes not only from her personal experience - but also her background in user experience and design. And then as she's expanded on that through events and accelerator programs such as Unreal Collective (where we met), Give Back Hack and Sea Change. For Tanya, the business side did not come easy. She does not have a background in the field, so she had a lot to learn. We began discussing the strain behind pursuing side hustle projects. Tanya admitted that her mental health did take a hit (I can relate!). Working tirelessly was hard on her and her team, especially since people were still working outside the project. She learned she needed to take more care of herself, and find an appropriate balance. “If your mental health isn't where it needs to be, then everything else is going to take an even harder hit.” - Tanya Vora SpiceUp talks to many chefs across communities - Tanya found that the city of Columbus is very separated between cultures and demographics. Access to other cultures showed barriers, but the people SpiceUp encountered did want exposure to other cultures. Tanya knows it’s good to hear from people who are part of the country the cuisine comes from, as food is heavily interconnected with culture. Later on, Tanya mentioned the chefs not being able to fully present their cultures in their restaurants. She brought an interesting learning point about the word “ethnic”. Tanya explained the negative connotation the label can have, thus adding a layer of separation to something as universal as food. Chefs find themselves tailoring the cuisine to fit western, or American, palates. SpiceUp is creating an environment encouraging chefs to truly provide their wonderful cultures. “We all eat.” - Tanya Vora If you want to connect with SpiceUp, or are interested in their upcoming events, you can check out their Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, or the official site. Their next event is Sunday, February 16th for a Brunch at Mazah.

Randall C. Fisher is the President and Founder of Culinary Related Entertainment and Marketing, LLC. As far back as he can remember, Randy was focused on hospitality and guest experience. “I remember as a kid having friends over and creating buffet lunches complete with separate hot and cold stations. Most of my friends had no clue what I was doing, but it made me feel good to be doing something special for them. I also remember making an incredible mess, but they never saw that part.” And while attending law school, when most of his classmates were clerking for local law firms, he was busy working his way up the ladder at a local hotel or restaurant. After earning finance and law degrees and years in business and real estate development, Randy joined a prominent Miami hotel development and management firm, The Continental Companies (TCC), where he served as a partner and Senior Vice President of Development, responsible for identifying new hotel opportunities for the company. It was during this period that Randy also joined the Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival as an Event Producer. “I was always intrigued by food-focused events and the guest experience…especially how to deliver the very best for every person on site. The insight I gained in the hotel and restaurant business was perfectly suited for the culinary events and marketing business. In the end, it’s all about over-delivering for your guest.” After being approached to produce events from New York to California and other markets, Randy knew it was time to launch an independent company to take on new opportunities and challenges. Since 2004, Culinary Related Entertainment and Marketing (CREaM) has gained a sterling reputation for executing best-in-class culinary events and marketing initiatives throughout the nation. CREaM works closely with the brightest stars and brands in the culinary industry and has developed long-lasting and important relationships across every discipline within the industry. “Every once in a while I’ll run into one of my childhood friends at an event and I get a kick out of knowing that I'm still trying to impress them with great food, entertainment and an overall memorable experience. And, I'm making less of a mess now.”
