The Stone of Scone, an oblong block of red sandstone used for centuries in the coronation of British monarchs, was recovered by Police on April 11th, 1951; three and a half months after its removal from Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day. Four Scottish students from the University of Glasgow (Ian Hamilton, Gavin Vernon, Kay Matheson and Alan Stuart) stole the stone in the hope it could boost interest in Scottish nationalism. Instead, it seemed to provoke a national discussion about where the stone - which they'd accidentally split in two before bungling it into their Ford Anglia - should now reside. Welkom bij aflevering 183 van Nerd Culture waarin we met een gehavende opstelling van start gaan. Ondanks dat Jelle en Huey niet in vorm zijn komen ze weer met een shitload aan feitjes, fabeltjes en ongezouten meningen omtrent het tweede deel in de Harry Potter serie: The Chamber of Secrets. De Nerd Culture Harry Potter Marathon. Vorige week was de kick-off van onze Harry Potter marathon waarin we de komende weken tot aan kerst elke week een van de delen uit de iconische filmreeks bekijken. Huey zat weer met zijn pen in de aanslag om driftig mee te schrijven tijdens zijn bevindingen. Zijn er deze week antwoorden op zijn vragen gekomen? Hoe werkt de puntentelling bij Zwerkbal? Is de onzichtbaarheidsmantel geluidsdicht? En was Jezus Christus een tovenaar? In dit tweede deel wordt Harry Potter gewaarschuwd door huiself Dobby om een jaartje aan de toverschool over te slaan. Uiteraard besluit hij, door middel van een doldwaze autorit in een Ford Anglia, toch te gaan. Maar stuit hij op een aantal sinistere waarschuwingen omtrent the chamber of secrets. Of je nu een doorgewinterde Potterhead bent of voor het eerst Zweinstein bezoekt, elke week duiken we diep in de tovenaarswereld en delen we onze inzichten, favoriete momenten en verborgen details. It's hard writing the introduction for an episode when you know a major news story will dominate it. Hey y'all!We're back and finishing up our sixth year at Hogwarts, a school that needs some serious changes in its child safety regulations. Speaking of safety regulations, a funeral memorial for a giant spider that tried to EAT Harry, Ron, and their Ford Anglia, while the two supervising adults (and I use that term loosely) get smashed, is a little sus. Meanwhile, Harry is high as a kite and could have very possibly OD'd on Liquid Luck because he drank the whole thing without researching how this liquid works. Is it in doses? Is it supposed to be taken in one gulp? When he "pretended" to add some Felix Felicis in Ron's drink before Quidditch try-outs, he put in a few drops. What is the correct dosage? Why did Hermione not scour every book and resource for the answer? Clearly we have some major concerns. Again: see lack of child safety regulations.P.S. If I have to hear Lavender Brown call Ron, "Won-won" one more time, I may actually puke. While Ron and Lavender may not be the worst of the relationships in this series, they are definitely the most annoying; at least Lavender is.

The fellahs take it on the road down to Mississippi this week to visit the Possum Killer Garage. They sit down with owner Ricky Neal in his awesome hangout now nicknamed the Possum Palace. It has some of the coolest memorabilia you've ever seen! Ricky is an influence on many in the Memphis/Mid-South hot rod community and has plenty of stories to tell. Talking to Ricky is like talking to hot rodding royalty. to talk about the projects in his shop. The latest and most exciting project is a 1969 Chevy Nova funny car that he bought with his son, Michael. The two have had the dream since Michael started racing at the age of 14. The two have campaigned a ‘48 Ford Anglia named Dixie Fever for a number of years on the gasser circuit. When the Nova became available, they jumped at the chance to make their dreams come true. Ricky also talks about Asphalt Cowboy, his front-engine, six-cylinder, Bantam-bodied dragster. It could win any car show with Ricky's amazing paint job and has some really neat nostalgic touches such as the front-mounted Eelco gas tank. The conversation again turns to Mike's unfinished projects before talking about Tommy Boren's chopped ‘32. Ricky painted the car ten years ago and it is finally ready to hit the road. Then, Ricky talks about his old pinstriping friend and hero, Ron “Bluefoot” Whimbley. Blue was a true character in the hot rod community. He was a big burly guy who once wrestled a bear. You didn't want to cross him, but if you were a friend, he had a heart of gold. Ricky has many of his personal effects including the top hat that Blue wore whenever he pinstriped cars. One time, Ricky hosted Gene Winfield to paint a car in his paint booth. He tells the story of Gene wanting to paint the car in the middle of the night. In his late-80's, Gene was ready to work. Ricky got the opportunity to visit Gene's shop early this year and got a personal tour of his house. Catch a glimpse of the latest in Harry Potter scholarship and get oriented to our new podcast!  In our first episode, Emily and Katy introduce the virtual Potter Studies education you can expect from Potterversity. We discuss the Harry Potter Academic Conference (HPAC) at Chestnut Hill College, which this year was held virtually. Kudos to Karen Wendling and Patrick McCauley for pulling off this gathering successfully in a way that allowed Potter scholars from all over the world to interact with each other. Hear about some of our favorite presentations, including Brent Satterly’s talk on LGBTQ responses to J.K. Rowling and several excellent close-readings of the books and movies. Many former Reading, Writing, Rowling guests appeared to discuss humor (Louise Freeman), Hogwarts: A History (Lana Whited), “creative maladjustment” (Beth Sutton-Ramspeck), Merlin and Dumbledore (Laurie Beckoff), and Quidditch (Caitlin Harper). In his featured presentation, Chris Bell wondered about whether we could read Harry as biracial to understand his position between two worlds. On Tyranny author Timothy Snyder’s keynote was an eye-opening political analysis connecting the history of totalitarianism to the Harry Potter books - with insights for us today as well.  You’ll also get to hear about the papers Emily and Katy presented at the conference. Emily explains the thinking behind her talk about food and the eucharist in the wizarding world. As a liturgist, Emily became interested in the table fellowship at the end of Deathly Hallows, which has eucharistic overtones. Looking closely at the Sorcerer’s Stone, Emily tells us why there is so much emphasis on food, and how food is represented as transformative in an alchemical sense. Stay tuned for a “Dining Hall” episode on a future Potterversity episode where we’ll explore this topic even more. Katy’s presentation pondered whether Arthur Weasley’s “misuse of Muggle artifacts” is actually cultural appropriation, particularly with his bewitching of the Ford Anglia. Cultures do not stay static and isolated, but when does cultural borrowing become theft or offensive? The divide between Muggles and wizards - including wizard secrecy - makes this a complex question and helps us to approach the issue with sensitivity and nuance.  The HPAC this year showed that Potter Studies reflects current social and political developments. Our times themselves are politically charged, and the Harry Potter books reveal that these trends have a long arc visible even two decades ago. Talking about issues in the context of the wizarding world allows us to engage with complex problems and political realities in a more neutral setting. Some problems recur in successive generations, which the series reflects, and this will continue to keep the Harry Potter books relevant.  Our special segment for this episode: "Overheard in the Potterversity Staff Room" (with Katherine Sas).

Anfangs ist die Reise wunderbar entspannt, dasselbe gilt allerdings nicht für die Landung, denn die Jungs (und das Auto) landen in der Peitschenden Weide, dem übellaunigsten Baum auf dem ganzen Gelände von Hogwarts. Turn to Page 265, Aragog. Today’s lesson is called Missing Pieces. The chapter begins with Harry and Ron grappling with the sudden absences of Hermione, Dumbledore, and Hagrid. The school is enforcing strict rules upon the students in order to protect against further attacks, and these rules (and the seeming absence of all spiders) are putting a stop to Harry and Ron acting on Hagrid’s departing words. Eventually, however, they discover an organized trail of spiders while in Herbology, and resolve to follow the trail that night. After tracking to Hagrid’s Hut, they go with Fang into the Forbidden Forest. The trail of spiders leads to their getting captured by giant spiders who take them to Aragog’s lair. Aragog recounts Hagrid’s apparent innocence and his hatred of the beast inside the school, which culminated in the murder of a student in the bathroom. He casually announces that his children will now eat Harry and Ron, when the Ford Anglia bizarrely arrives and shuttles them to safety. Turn to Page 65, The Whomping Willow. Today’s lesson is called Crash Decisions The chapter begins with Harry surprised that he wants summer break to go even longer, due to his love for life at the Burrow. Summer does end eventually, and the group heads to Platform 9 ¾ to take the Hogwarts Express. When Harry and Ron try to go through the barrier, however, they meet only solid concrete. In a panic, they decide to use the flying Ford Anglia to track down the Hogwarts Express. Surprisingly, they are successful, although the invisibility charm malfunctions, and begin an extensive journey flying above the train. The car begins to give out just as they see the castle, finally stalling out and crashing into a tree: The Whomping Willow. They survive the tree’s assaults and the car ejects them and their stuff and drives off. Ron discovers his wand was nearly snapped in the chaos. In the castle, Professor Snape, then McGonagall and Dumbledore, punish Harry and Ron and try to communicate the gravity of their being seen by muggles in the flying car. They are given detention, and forced to miss the feast and eat alone. Eventually, they make it to the Gryffindor common room, where Hermione and Percy are perturbed by their adventure, but the rest greet them like heroes. What a fantastic weekend I had. Due to a couple of reasons I went for a big ramble all around the hinterland yesterday. Travelling from one side of the island to the other. I drove 200 kilometres and we visited four different beaches in the day. The dog didn’t know what was happening. Not just one beach walk Dad but four!!!!But as I drove around the place I noticed some atrocious driving and particularly some aggressive tailgating and then overtaking and the funny thing was that every time it was the same make of car.A Ford Ranger Double Cab Ute.That shouldn’t surprise me, after all, they are the biggest selling car in the land and diesel-powered double-cab utes are our car of choice. The statistics are incredible. Double-cab utes make up eight of the top ten new vehicles sold every month. The top five double cab utes are outselling the top five normal cars by a ratio of almost two to one right now. Our next favourites are SUVs and vans then way back in the field passenger cars.When it comes to electric vehicles the figures are even more overwhelming.  or every electric car we bought last year we bought 64 mostly-diesel double-cab utes! One electric car, 64 double-cab utes!This is all bad news for our carbon emissions from transport because we love our caravan towing, bike carrying weekend adventure machine with the 3.2-litre motor.There are 4.2 million vehicles in the fleet today, if you want to replace all those with electric vehicles you’d be doing so at a rate of 131,250 a year for the next 32 years! Every year you don’t replace them at that rate you have to add that to the following years. Last year we bought about 3,000 electric vehicles. So, only 128,250 short. We’re toast. No wonder the carbon emissions are going up over 2 per cent every year.Now I don’t know what the matter is with the drivers of the Ford Rangers on the open road, but something’s up. They may be driving what is essentially a small truck but their mindset is that they’re racing a Ford Escort rally car.Not content with demolishing the air quality they are also very keen on driving a foot behind you with their front bumper bars looming in your back window. Lights flashing because of course, they need to get ahead of you for some vitally important reason. I wouldn’t mind if I was poodling along at 7ok in an old Ford Anglia but when you’re in a Ford SUV yourself with cruise control set at 100k you have to wonder what they’re up to. You know I’m trying to figure out if buying a Ford Ranger turns you into a dick or whether it’s dicks who prefer Ford Rangers.But whatever it’s holiday time and I’d urge everyone just to chill out and enjoy the journey.

Deputy Mike Ascolese and Actor Kevyn Major Howard Join the Show!Fueled By The Fallen assists in supporting our Military Members, Public Safety Personnel, and their Families to aid in their emotional, physical, and financial recovery needs by displaying and racing Memorial Race cars.Kevyn Major Howard, "Rafterman" from Stanley Kubrick's blockbuster film Full Metal Jacket, challenged himself in 2007 to name just one Hero that had died for his freedom. "I was watching the nightly news as they announced that 12 died this day and 7 that day", Kevyn said. "I woke up one morning and challenged myself to name just one person who has died for my freedom", he continued. "I couldn't."So Kevyn decided to do something about it. He started the Fueled By The Fallen, a 501(c)3 non-profit. Kevyn enlisted the expertise of Chuck Spiker, a lifelong drag racer and former National Go Kart Champion, to create a memorial that would get the attention of all Americans. "The reason we chose race cars is because you can get the attention of a two year and a ninety-two year old with one", Kevyn said. Chuck took a 1963 Nova and created a 10 second quarter mile door slammer drag car representing fallen Marines from Iraq and Afghanistan. "Maybe I can get people who look upon the race car to remember just one name. If I can do that, I have accomplished my mission", Kevyn continued.The determination was made that more cars are needed. The '63 Marines Nova was already filled with 867 fallen Marines. Fueled By The Fallen acquired a Bickel chassis custom drag car with a fiberglass 1966 Nova shell to become the second Marines car.A second 1966 Chevy Nova was acquired to become the Navy car in 2008. As more people viewed the Memorial Race Cars, the need for the other branches became immediately apparent.A 1992 Ford Mustang LX "Fox Body" was acquired to represent the fallen Army soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan. Today, there is a second Army Mustang ('93 GT 5.0) that is a parade car to increase the visibility of those Army Heroes whom have given the ultimate sacrifice.In April of 2010, the Air Force car was acquired. It is a 1970 Chrysler Challenger R/T featuring 99 fallen Air Force Heroes.In August of 2010, a Ford Anglia was acquired from Niagara Falls, NY.
