In this episode of the Braun Performance & Rehab Podcast, Dan is joined by Michael Fahey to discuss his work in film, in particular with "Westside vs The World", in addition to Velocity Based Training and the OVR performance company.Since editing the award winning 2011 documentary Forks Over Knives, Michael has worked on many sports and health documentaries as well as the NFL Network, E!, and Travel Channel. Michael first visited Westside in 1999 and used Westside methods until 2005 for football and track. Since starting work on the film in 2014 Michael has squatted 670lbs, bench pressed 430lbs, and deadlifted 607.5lbs (all gym lifts). He has also jumped a 28.4" standing vertical at 286 lbs. In 2020, he began coaching high school athletes in his spare time using the methods he learned during the creation of the film. He has trained over 90 athletes with 30+" verticals, 25 over 36", & 5 athletes with verticals between 40" and 42.8". He has also had an athlete with a laser timed 4.309 second 40yd dash, and the top high school long jumper for the year 2021 (25'5.5"). After obtaining his bachelor's degree, and while completing his first year at the University of Georgia veterinary school, he received a telegram from a well known professor at Cornell University, offering a scholarship and research opportunity too good to turn down. And so he completed his education at Cornell University (M.S., Ph.D.) and MIT (Research Associate) in nutrition, biochemistry and toxicology. He then spent 10 years on the faculty of Virginia Tech's Department of Biochemistry and Nutrition before returning to Cornell in 1975 where he presently holds his Endowed Chair as the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry in the Division of Nutritional Sciences. Dr. Campbell's research experience includes both laboratory experiments and large-scale human studies. He has received over 70 grant-years of peer-reviewed research funding (mostly with NIH), served on grant review panels of multiple funding agencies, actively participated in the development of national and international nutrition policy, and authored over 350 research papers, most published in peer-reviewed science journals. Throughout his career, he has confronted a great deal of confusion surrounding nutrition and its effects. It is precisely this confusion that he has focused so much on, in recent years. In order to synthesize the findings of his long and rewarding career, and to give back to the public whose lives are threatened by rampant misinformation and special interests, Dr. Campbell co-wrote The China Study: Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health (2005, 2016), which has sold more than 3 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 50 foreign languages. He is also the author of the The New York Times bestseller Whole (2013), The Low Carb Fraud (2013), and The Future of Nutrition. An Insider's Look at the Science, Why We Keep Getting It Wrong and How to Start Getting It Right (2020). Join us today as we dive into his powerful story! “What made you change at age 33? The spark was being denied that life insurance policy. My wife was pregnant with our second son. And, I wanted to, as a father and as a provider for my family, I wanted to make sure that my family would be taken care of if something happened to me. It wasn't like I was going through the formalities of getting a life insurance policy. Like, this is something that I was proud to be putting in place for my family. So if something happened, they would be able to, you know, to take care of themselves. And... getting denied was, um, you know, like a ton of bricks coming down. not only would they not give me the insurance, so I couldn't be proud to know that if something did happen to me, that my family would be able to take care of themselves, the fact that they didn't think I was going to make it 20 years was even more hard to take because here I am holding an infant with a, you know, with an 18-month-old toddler running around. So my focus was eating more, eating more fruits and vegetables every single day. And I was letting that naturally crowd out all the other stuff that I should be eating less of. So I didn't start with a, with a hard line on no cheese. I didn't start with a hard line on no bread. Or flours or. It wasn't necessarily as conscious. It's kind of what I heard. I was working in pharmaceutical research and I had more of an informatics role there where I was helping with, you know, data analysis to help bring new drugs to market. I was really excited about that when I started working there because I thought it was an opportunity to help people. Good morning, everyone! In today's episode, I shared a deeply personal story about how two patients profoundly changed my life and career as a physician. For those who are new to the channel, I hope this gives you some insight into my journey and the transformative power of a plant-based diet. I began by recounting my move to Rifle, Colorado, after serving in the Air Force. Working as a family medicine physician in a small, rural hospital, I encountered a patient in 2012 who mentioned that meat and dairy upset her stomach. I advised her to stop consuming these foods, not realizing this was essentially a plant-based diet. When she returned 30 days later with her daughter, who had also adopted the diet and experienced significant improvements in her ADD symptoms, I was intrigued. This led me to dive into the science behind plant-based diets, starting with T. Colin Campbell's book, "The China Study." The compelling evidence I found there and in other resources like Dr. McDougall's site and the "Forks Over Knives" documentary convinced me to explore this further. Another patient with lupus came to see me shortly after. She was on 12 different medications and in significant pain. I suggested she try a plant-based diet, and within two weeks, her inflammatory markers had significantly decreased, and she felt much better. Over five months, she lost 50 pounds and was able to stop seven of her medications. Inspired by these results, I decided to adopt a whole food plant-based diet for my family and myself. I threw out all animal-based products from our home and began this new journey. My family was supportive, and over time, I saw incredible improvements in my own health, including a significant reduction in my thyroid medication. Throughout the years, I've used this approach with countless patients, witnessing remarkable transformations. This experience led me to co-found Plant-Based Telehealth and later Mora Medical, although the latter didn't work out. Dr. Scott Harrington's interest in medicine and healthy living began early in life, deeply influenced by his mother's struggles with weight. Watching her navigate these challenges, he developed a fascination with diet books and a desire to help others achieve better health. However, it wasn't until 2012, after watching the documentary "Forks Over Knives," that his perspective shifted significantly. The film, which highlights the benefits of a whole-food, plant-based diet, inspired him to embrace veganism and adopt a more holistic approach to health. Military Experience and Plant-Based Transformation As an active-duty Army physician, Dr. Harrington faced personal health challenges, including maintaining his own weight. Despite efforts to manage his weight through portion control and intense exercise, he often felt hungry and deprived. A turning point came when a Special Forces soldier introduced him to the plant-based diet, emphasizing its performance benefits. This encounter, coupled with the influence of "Forks Over Knives," led Dr. Harrington to adopt a plant-based diet, transforming his approach to health and wellness. Integrating Military Insights into Healthcare Dr. Harrington's military service, including deployments in Afghanistan, profoundly shaped his understanding of trauma and recovery. He emphasized the importance of normalizing responses to traumatic experiences, such as PTSD, and helping patients view their reactions as typical under extreme conditions. This empathetic approach has been crucial in his practice, allowing him to build trust and provide effective care for veterans and others dealing with significant stress and trauma. Transitioning from Military Service After years of long deployments and rigorous schedules, Dr. Harrington sought a change from his demanding life in active duty. Desiring more time with his family and a less strenuous routine, he decided to transition to a career that allowed him to work from home. This shift led him to a telemedicine provider called American Well, similar to Teladoc or Doctors On Demand, where he served as a staff doctor. The Telemedicine Experience During his two years at American Well, Dr. Harrington was licensed in multiple states, allowing him to reach a wide range of patients. While the job provided the convenience of working from home, it lacked continuity of care. The nature of telemedicine meant he often saw new patients with minor ailments, leaving him unfulfilled professionally. He found himself yearning for deeper, more meaningful patient interactions and the opportunity to discuss lifestyle medicine more comprehensively.
