Directed by Gabriel Axel and released in 1987, Babette's Feast is a film that follows a French maid named Babette working for two sisters in a remote Danish town. As a refugee of a French civil war Babette is taken in by the two sisters thanks to a mutual friend in France. One day Babette wins the lottery and decides to show her thanks to the town and to celebrate the sisters' late father's 100th birthday with her cooking of French cuisine. It's a film that highlights community and the transcendental power of food in one of the finest films about cooking in cinematic history.

Le festin se décline en Vermeer ou en natures-mortes hollandaises. Le film passe les modes, les époques, devient une référence en matière de film qui sublime lʹart culinaire. Since we started Criteria: The Catholic Film Podcast in May 2020, we've been hosting in-depth discussions of movies from the Vatican's 1995 list of important films. Now, after three years, we've finished discussing all 45 films - and in this episode, together with Catholic filmmaker Nathan Douglas, we're taking a look back at the list as a whole. La mayoría de nosotros tiende a basar su vida en lo que hacemos, nuestras obras, no la gracia como un favor inmerecido. Nos retamos a nosotros mismos a "hacerlo mejor", convencidos de que el "éxito" depende de nosotros mismos, nuestra entrega, esfuerzo y disciplina. Es cierto, nos dicen, que hace falta algo de suerte, quizás incluso la ayuda de Dios o quien sea, pero como dice la canción del grupo de Liverpool con la que empezamos este programa,Echo & The Bunnymen "tienes que ser tu propio salvador" (Silver, 1984)... La gracia no es un complemento, algo que se añade a nuestras obras. Si como dice la cantautora estadounidense Sharon Van Etten, estamos "intentando salvarnos a nosotros mismos" (Save Yourself, 2020) desconocemos que la salvación es por la gracia de Dios, un regalo que recibimos libre e inmerecidamente. Stephen Stills descubrió que "Jesús dio su amor gratis" (Jesus Gave Love Away For Free). Así se llama la canción que grabó con el grupo que formó después de Buffalo Springfield y CSNY (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young), Manassas en 1972. Uno de los secretos mejor guardados hoy, incluso entre los mismos cristianos, es que Jesús hace todo. No sólo somos salvos por gracia, sino que vivimos por gracia. Todos pensamos que si nos esforzamos, seremos recompensados. La historia de Jesús en la que hoy nos detenemos en nuestro viaje en nuestra Ruta por los 66 libros de la Biblia es la de los obreros de la viña (Mateo 20:1-16). Esta parábola nos enseña que el Reino de Dios no se basa en los méritos, sino en la gracia. Dios no nos debe nada. El no nos necesita. Somos nosotros los que le necesitamos a Él. Una de las películas que mejor ilustra la gracia de Dios es el film danés "El festín de Babette" (1988). Basado en un cuento de Isak Dinesen, el seudónimo de la autora de "Memorias de Africa", Karen Blixen, se desarrolla originalmente en un ambiente pietista luterano de Noruega. Cʹest un film qui va vous donner lʹeau à la bouche, vous exciter les papilles, vous sublimer les envies. Car sous la caméra de Gabriel Axel, le Festin de Babette prend des allures de conte enchanté. Une table se couvre de mets plus somptueux les uns que les autres, les vins font leurs accords, et les convives sʹéveillent à la vie. Film danois, Babettes Gæstebud, est un film rare sorti 1987. Il est inspiré d'une nouvelle de Karen Blixen, extraite du recueil Anecdotes du destin. Le film obtient l'Oscar du meilleur film étranger en 1988. Le Festin de Babette raconte lʹhistoire dʹun pasteur luthérien autoritaire et possessif, de ses deux filles qui ne se marieront jamais, dʹune communauté pieuse et frugale, qui voit arriver en son sein une française en exil. Elle se nomme Babette, elle fuit la guerre civile à Paris. Nous sommes au Danemark au 19e siècle. Pendant 15 ans, Babette servira docilement les deux sœurs jusquʹau jour où elle gagne à la loterie et leur offre, ainsi quʹà toute la communauté, un festin de reines et de rois. Stéphane Audran trouve ici son meilleur rôle. Gabriel Axel filme au plus près des visages, les mets, et compose une œuvre faites dʹune succession de tableaux de maître. Le festin se décline en Vermeer ou en natures-mortes hollandaises. Le film passe les modes, les époques, devient une référence en matière de film qui sublime lʹart culinaire. Babette et son festin nous font du bien au cœur, au corps et à lʹâme. Elle nʹattend plus que nous pour servir. Ne la faisons pas attendre et faisons péter le champagne, non dʹune coupette. It’s appropriate for all ages (although kids are going to think it’s boring until the food comes out) and constructed with total confidence. We call it a comedy above; some people call it a drama—if it is a drama, it’s a drama of caricatures, and a very funny one. And if it’s a comedy, it’s a comedy with very high stakes. Two elderly sisters in a small Danish village have spent their lives praying, caring for the poor, and tending to the small, quasi-Puritan sect founded by their late father. When their French cook, Babette, asks if she can make a feast in honor of their father's centenary, their faith is challenged and their souls are enlivened by the revelation that beauty too is a means by which God draws us closer to Him.
