This week, we're putting The Tonearm's needle on five-time Grammy-nominated composer Suzanne Ciani.Suzanne has spent decades innovating electronic music on the Buchla synthesizer, an instrument as intimate to her as any acoustic musician's.Suzanne has multiple projects out this year: CIANI/ORKEST, a live album with the fifty-piece Metropole Orkest, conducted by Simon Dobson; a collaborative live album with British electronic producer Actress; and the score for John Wilson's idiosyncratic new documentary, The History of Concrete. We talk about why an artist who's needed total control throughout her career said yes to an orchestra, a producer, and a filmmaker all in one year, what it's like hearing an instrument built for one pair of hands answered by fifty more, and her pet peeve about volume at live shows.(The musical excerpts heard in the interview are from Suzanne Ciani's CIANI/ORKEST)—Dig DeeperArtist and Album:Visit Suzanne Ciani at sevwave.com and follow on Instagram and YouTube; her catalog is on Bandcamp.Purchase CIANI/ORKEST on quadraphonic vinyl from AKP Recordings and digitally from Bandcamp or Qobuz. This week, catastrophic flooding in Missouri forced hundreds of campers to be rescued, including more than 200 young campers and counselors airlifted out by Black Hawk helicopters after the Black River rose to record levels in the middle of the night. We've also got a scary rockfall incident on Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park, gas prices ticking back up, and new RV sales continuing their long slide. Plus, campground planning tools are seeing record traffic, KOA has been named one of the most profitable franchise brands in the country, and major hotel companies are moving even deeper into glamping and outdoor hospitality. Camping may still be about getting outside, but more than ever, it's also big business — and sometimes, a serious safety story. In this episode, we turn to your comments to cover three polarizing issues and try to find some common ground. Should campers be penalized for reserving public campground sites they don't use? Should RV parks let long-term transient workers for AI data centers take over? Should RVers leave lights on all night? *Get links and more in the show notes at https://RVMiles.com/418 *Support RV Miles and independent RV journalism
Playwright Deirdre Kinahan and theatre director Louise Lowe joined Rick to discuss their project.
Your body has two modes. Go, and digest. It cannot run both at the same time — and you have been in go since about seven this morning. That single fact explains why your gut protocol is only partially effective. Why the food is immaculate, the labs improve, and you still feel awful. And why it was never really about the food. In Episode 2 of The Homecoming, Dr. Connie Cheung — DPT, IFMCP, 25 years in the body — goes into the room underneath everything: the enteric layer. Your gut has its own nervous system, hundreds of millions of neurons running their own operations and reporting upward all day long. Nothing has to be wrong for digestion to shut down. It only has to never stop. Because digestion is the first job your body puts to the back of the queue when it thinks you are still going. She reads three bodies. A high achiever with immaculate food, improving labs, and no relief — who eats lunch standing at a counter in six minutes. A fifty-two-year-old lifter, taught to brace under the bar and never taught to find the floor underneath it, bloated by two o'clock every single day. And a woman with hip pain and fourteen years of digestive trouble that nobody ever put in the same paragraph — and a caesarean scar no one had touched since the day it was made. The mechanism is your diaphragm: the floor of your breathing and the ceiling of your gut, coming down twenty thousand times a day to move everything underneath it. Hold your belly in — as almost every woman has, since she was about eleven — and it never comes down. The pump does not pump. There is no powder on earth that fixes a diaphragm that does not move. You did not get the wrong advice. You got it in the wrong order. This episode is not about what you eat. Not one word about food. It is about the way you eat. And it ends with a practice that takes 20 seconds and costs nothing.
A dive into the ambitious new adaptation of The Odyssey, featuring an ensemble cast that reimagines Homer's timeless tale through character, consequence, and cosmic law. From the burden of heroism to the fragile threads of family, this conversation explores how ancient myth becomes urgent, human storytelling. Sit down with Matt Damon (Odysseus), Anne Hathaway (Penelope), Tom Holland (Telemachus), John Leguizamo (Eumaeus), Himesh Patel (Eurylochus), and writer‑director Christopher Nolan, along with Lupita Nyong'o (Helen of Troy) and Jon Bernthal (Menelaus). Additional reflections come from Benny Safdie (Agamemnon), Zendaya (Athena), Samantha Morton (Circe), and Damon again on the power of this cast. Themes That Hit Hard The Law of Zeus — not just divine rule, but the moral architecture of the universe. Homecoming vs. Identity — what remains of a person after years of war and wandering. Faith, Fate, and Defiance — the eternal tension between mortal will and cosmic design. Family as Myth — the stories we inherit, the ones we rewrite, and the ones we fight to return to. Despite the Phi Sigma Epsilon fraternity closing its doors on the Hillsdale campus in the late 1980s, for more than 40 years the Phi Sigs continued to gather on their property on Hillsdale Street for Homecoming and other special events to reconnect, remember, and celebrate their friendships. In 2016, Phi Sig alumni came up with a pavilion idea and concept for their property. Partnering with the College, that plan was eventually finalized, and in 2024, the Phi Sig Alumni Pavilion was built and dedicated. Two of those Phi Sigs, Trip Banks and Ross Anderson, talk about the project and their lasting legacy. ------ Informative. Inspirational. Uplifting. Those are the goals of the White and Blue podcast. We are here to tell the interesting stories of Hillsdale College alumni, who number more than 15,000 strong. Our guests will share about their time and experiences while on campus, and also the impact they have had on the world since graduating. What makes the Hillsdale College graduate unique? We will explore that question and more, including how alumni have impacted the past, present, and future of the College. Won’t you join us?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Vision Cast kicks off the Summer Song and Dance Festival with live vocal performances, original music, and one of the sweetest family updates of the year. Co-hosted by Salvis and Rita with JC, Donald, Katie, and Stacey James on the panel — plus a pre-recorded drop-in from Preston who joins the show later on. The night opens with a soulful R&B-style birthday serenade for Katie, setting the celebration tone for the rest of the show. Rita then takes the virtual stage with beautiful, impromptu live renditions of Selena Quintanilla's "Como La Flor" and the timeless "La Bamba" — a heartfelt tribute landing the same week the Latin music world is buzzing over A.B. Quintanilla's response to the Ángela Aguilar Como La Flor cover controversy. Stacey debuts three original instrumental pieces she made in Suno AI — the sun-soaked "Tropical Sun," the mellow "Sun on the Cedar," and a first sneak peek of her upcoming LGBTQ+ music project "Rainbow Love." It's a perfect fit for the post-Pride July Accountability moment and part of Suno's massive 2026 wave (2 million paid subscribers and the brand-new Soccer Anthem generator released just this week). Then comes the biggest news of the night: Stacey shares that baby Noah has officially graduated from the NICU and is home with the family, perfectly timed with this week's viral #NICUGraduate wave celebrating NICU staff and grad babies across the country. Donald is bringing the holiday cheer to summer with a preview of his feature-length Christmas in July music specials on Super Hit Mix Radio — riding the same "summer revenue playbook" internet radio trend that has stations like RadioU flipping their format to all-holiday this week. Preston sends a warm hello and update via a pre-recorded message before jumping on the show later in the evening to catch up with the crew, and JC shares his excitement for an upcoming Puerto Rico trip before heading out early — expect coquí, salsa, and street food stories in a future episode. The crew rounds out the evening with a riff on how Suno AI, VoiceOver-friendly music tools, and independent internet radio are opening doors for blind creators to release polished tracks and full stations without a big-studio setup, and closes the way only Vision Cast can: with the legendary reminder that "Doodles spill the milk!"Keep technology alive, let your talent shine.Recorded 2026-07-08. By the time you've crossed the room and sat down, Dr. Connie Cheung already knows most of your story — before you've said a word. In the premiere of The Homecoming, she opens up about what 25 years as a physical therapist, Pilates and yoga teacher gave her — and the thing that came after all of it: a skilled eye for patterns and the ability to interpret them. The collapsed hip, the braced shoulders, the held breath. You can manage your face. You can't manage your hips. The training gave her the language. The years gave her the eyes — the read isn't something she learned in a course; it's something that integrated over thousands of bodies until she could interpret the state a person is living in on sight. And this goes deeper than observation: it's about the gap between the competent person you present and the one underneath, and why being seen for who you are, not what you do, is where healing begins. Dr. Connie reframes why so much effort hasn't worked: it's not a solution problem; it's a sequence problem — the right things done in the wrong state never land.
Before TikTok, before OnlyFans, before anyone used the phrase "sex positive" — there was Robin Byrd on New York public access cable. Sarah Jessica Parker just produced a documentary about her called Bang My Box on Max, and it's worth your time. Ben and Ione break down why Robin Byrd was genuinely radical and why she was impossible to put down. Also: why 90s indie artists were culturally forbidden from wanting success (and how that's completely changed), the Miles Davis quote that explains every artist's journey, Ninajirachi's victorious homecoming and why the horror film Obsession is better than it has any right to be.

Steven Bernstein, the Berkeley-born trumpeter, composer, and bandleader, joins host Steve Roby for a wide-ranging conversation about five decades of musical exploration, his upcoming SFJAZZ residency, and two new companion albums that reimagine the same music through entirely different sonic lenses. What We Talk AboutGrowing up in Berkeley during the '60s and '70s — how the city's unique musical culture, the Keystone Corner jazz scene, and a school improvisation program shaped Bernstein's musical identityWhy funk — not rock — was the lingua franca of Bay Area youth, and how Tower of Power loomed larger than The Beatles in that worldArriving in New York in 1979 at the dawn of the punk-funk era (Defunkt, James White and the Blacks), and finding his musical home in the downtown sceneThe origin story of Sexmob — born not in rehearsals but in late-night residencies at the Knitting Factory and Tonic, playing for live audiences and letting their reactions shape the musicResonation Trio and Ultra Resonance — two albums built from the same source material, one an acoustic trumpet trio, the other a full dub reimagining by producer Scotty Hard. Bernstein traces the idea back to first hearing Burning Spear's Garvey's Ghost and his lifelong love of surrealism and the magic realism of Borges and CortázarTouring with Laurie Anderson and how Sexmob became one of her closest musical ensembles — and what makes "Church of Panic" a perfect example of the band's instinctive, arrangement-free approachA deep dive into Banacek from The Hard Way — how Julius Hemphill's Dogon A.D. still echoes in Bernstein's playing, and the enduring musical partnership with John MedeskiThe SFJAZZ residency: Sexmob Does The Bay — why Bernstein split the run into two nights of Bay Area psychedelic rock (with guitarist Liberty Ellman) and two nights of classic Latin soul (with percussionist John Santos)The Santana connection, the Afro-Latin heartbeat of Berkeley, and the gumbo culture that made Bay Area music unlike anywhere elseA surprise detour into Jimi Hendrix's brief Berkeley childhood — and a hint that a Hendrix project may be next on Bernstein's listMusic Featured"Church of Panic" — Laurie Anderson (with Sex Mob)"Banacek" — Sex Mob & Scotty Hard (The Hard Way)All music was supplied by the artist and used with their permission.Show DetailsArtist: Steven Bernstein's SexmobVenue: Joe Henderson Lab, SFJAZZ CenterDate: July 16–19, 2026 (2026 SFJAZZ Summer Sessions)Shows: Thu, July 16 & Fri, July 17 — Bay Area Psychedelic Rock, with Liberty Ellman; Sat, July 18 & Sun, July 19 — Classic Latin Soul, with John Santos. In this mini episode of the RV Miles podcast, Jason and Abby revisit past RV mythbusting segments from earlier episodes to see what still holds up, including whether you should buy an RV from Camping World, whether RV-specific toilet paper is necessary, and misconceptions about using Drano in RV plumbing (including cautions around waterless Hepvo traps). They also debunk bags of water with pennies to deter flies, discuss mixed claims about Irish Spring soap or dryer sheets for mice, and recommend sealing entry points, and dismiss the idea that you must be under 30 feet to camp in national parks. *Get links and more in the show notes at https://RVMiles.com/416 *Support RV Miles and independent RV journalism
