Break 1: MOG   STORY 1: CHURCH VANDALISM: Man Arrested For Causing Damage At 4 Gwinnett Churches David Rangel, a 41-year-old Hoschton man, has been arrested by Gwinnett County police for vandalizing multiple churches in the Buford area. He faces 12 felony charges, including vandalism to places of worship and criminal damage to property. Using a small ratchet, Rangel allegedly smashed windows at four churches on July 9, including locations of 12Stone Church, Victory Church, and Zion Baptist Church. Video surveillance captured his actions, and police utilized Flock cameras to track his vehicle and make the arrest without incident. Rangel confessed to the vandalism, though police have not identified a clear motive. He is currently held on a $68,000 bond at Gwinnett County Jail. STORY 2: Gwinnett's Population Surpasses 1 Million Residents   Gwinnett County's population has officially surpassed 1 million residents, according to new estimates from the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC). The ARC's latest figures indicate Gwinnett County now has approximately 1.01 million people, marking an increase of 14,900 individuals, or 1.49%, from the previous year. This growth reflects a total rise of 55,050 people since the 2020 Census. Among the metro region's counties, only Fulton County exceeds Gwinnett in population, with about 1.12 million residents. Despite this milestone, Gwinnett ranked sixth in growth rate among the region's counties over the past year. The ARC's estimates, though released recently, may already be outdated as they are based on data up to April 2023, with the region now totaling an estimated 5.2 million people. STORY 3: APPREHENDED: Ohio Murder Suspect Arrested In Lawrenceville Kenyatta Domingo Glass, wanted for murder by the Columbus Police Department in Ohio, was arrested in Lawrenceville with assistance from the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Unit on June 24. He was located at a residence in Lawrenceville and taken into custody without incident by a SWAT team. Glass was booked into the Gwinnett County Jail on a fugitive from justice charge and subsequently released to the Columbus Ohio Division of Police on July 6. He was wanted in connection with the murder of Shawn Grooms at the Lotus Lounge in September 2023, where another individual was also injured. DNA evidence linked Glass to the crime scene according to reports from the Columbus Dispatch. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Thuy Huynh, injured in one of these incidents, succumbed to his injuries on June 25. It's unclear if there's a familial relation between the two. Hong Huynh's address matches the location of one arson, not where Thuy was injured. Six people were at the other targeted home during the incident. A preliminary hearing is set for July 17 in Gwinnett County Magistrate Court. STORY 7: AROUND TOWN: Pair Of Gwinnett Leaders Earn Hall-of-Fame Honors Former Duluth Mayor Nancy Harris and Sugar Hill City Manager Paul Radford were inducted into the Georgia Municipal Association Hall of Fame for their significant contributions to municipal governance. Jennifer Landers, community director of the Kolter Homes Cresswind Georgia at Twin Lakes community, joins host Carol Morgan for this week's Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio episode. In this podcast segment, Landers discusses the 55+ active adult home industry and all things Cresswind Georgia at Twin Lakes. Landers began her career working in real estate for a single-family home builder and then transitioned to a national developer of master-planned communities. After almost 20 years with that developer, she joined the Kolter Homes team, leading its new 55+ active adult community. Landers said, “Now I'm working in the best of both worlds, working in a master-planned community and selling the homes here for Kolter at Cresswind Twin Lakes in Hoschton.” Cresswind Georgia at Twin Lakes is a master-planned community located in historic Hoschton. When complete, this community will welcome 1,300 families home with high -class amenities and breathtaking natural landscapes. The Cresswind community offers residents access to 29,000+ square foot clubhouse, indoor and outdoor pools, 40 acres of lakes, trails and golf cart paths and an event lawn for gathering with neighbors. Residents also enjoy Georgia's largest, private pickleball center located within their community. Location plays a huge role in the planning of 55+ active adult living, taking into consideration the population, healthcare and external amenities in the area. Families often want to move together, so building near growing local communities is crucial to keep everyone together. Landers said, “One of the biggest challenges, just in the Atlanta market, is that there are not enough large pieces of land left close enough to local amenities. That is probably our biggest challenge as we look for new Cresswinds.” Why does the active adult home shopper prefer community life? Social engagement is a driving factor. Homebuyers want opportunities to get to know their neighbors and connect through activities. Cresswind communities provide amenities and events that encourage residents to get out, have fun and engage in their community. The Cresswind-exclusive concert series has been a huge hit, highlighting local talent on the event lawn. Landers said, “There is something going on every single day, and you can be as active as you want or not.” Cresswind Georgia at Twin Lakes is outfitted with a model home village featuring 15 decorated residences, giving prospective homebuyers a glimpse of life in the community. Buyers also have access to hundreds of personalization options and convenient access to professional guidance in the Welcome Center's onsite design studio. Home shoppers still have plenty of time to secure a home in Cresswind Georgia at Twin Lakes. Of the 1,300 homes planned, only 500 homes have closed. Kolter Homes is now building in Phase Five of Eight. Phase Six is under development and set to open next year. The second phase of the community garden recently opened and introduced a new greenhouse and herb garden. The full community is expected to finish in 2030, giving prospective buyers time to unlock a new life with Cresswind. Before joining Eastwood Homes in October 2023 as land acquisition manager, Whitson was an agent completing various land deals in the Atlanta market. From 2016 until his current role, he worked in downtown Atlanta and around the perimeter, mainly on infill development projects. Eastwood Homes is a private builder based out of Charlotte, North Carolina, with a presence in the Virginia, the Carolinas and Georgia markets. A company connected to its roots, the original owner still participates in land drives to this day! With many projects underway, Eastwood Homes has a pulse on the Atlanta market. Prospective buyer searching for the perfect home across the state have many new construction opportunities to choose from, thanks to the builder's presence in Canton, Cumming, Flowery Branch, Ball Ground and Hoschton. Being a smaller company, [we] can kind of push the envelope and get a little more creative.” Traditionally a competitive market, Atlanta buyers are searching for homebuilders that fit the bill but also provide thoughtful features! Priced from the mid-$400,000s, the community provides a smaller, single-family product featuring up to five bedrooms and three or more bathrooms within walking distance of picturesque downtown Ball Ground. Whitson said, “That's something we're keeping in mind moving forward. How do we get the walkability? That's going to add a lot of value for the homeowners.” At Sunrise Cove at Great Sky in Canton, Whitson shared that the community has a few lots remaining as well as move-in-ready opportunities. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle, community members have no problem returning to town thanks to the close proximity! A Gwinnett County Sheriff's deputy has been placed on administrative leave and is expected to be fired after he was involved in an accident while driving under the influence, according to the Sheriff's Office. The Gwinnett County Sheriffs Office said Master Deputy Sheriff Walter Pollock was on duty when the accident occurred. The Georgia State Patrol arrested Pollock and charged him with driving under the influence, failure to maintain lane and striking a fixed object. The GSP is continuing to investigate the accident. No one was injured during the accident, according to the Sheriffs Office. 13-year-old Karam Alkhatib won the Best Film Overall award at the Gwinnett County Public Library's Student Film Festival with his stop-motion animation film "The Airforce's". Alkhatib, a student at Osborne Middle School in Hoschton, was inspired to take up the hobby during the COVID pandemic, and taught himself through online tutorials. His mother Sue praised his determination and hard work, and Alkhatib plans to use his $500 prize to create more films with bigger sets and longer storylines. Liam Gottimer, the voice of the Atlanta Gladiators joins us for our Glads update.  Gwinnett County officials plan to use eminent domain to acquire two adjacent pieces of land next to the Maguire-Livsey House, a historic property in the Promised Land community that was acquired by the county six-and-a-half years ago with plans to turn it into a historical park. The Livsey family, who gave the county the house, has accused officials of lowballing them on a price to pay for the land and of trying to negotiate with Thomas Livsey, the 93-year-old unofficial "Mayor of the Promised Land," while his health was in decline. Family members see the move as an attempt to take the land from a Black family rather than paying a fair price. The fight over the land carries racial undertones. Supporters of the family also said they are dismayed by the county's actions. Former state legislator Donna McLeod said she's disappointed in the county's Black leaders who broke color barriers when they came into their respective offices between 2018 and 2020. GDP Sports editor Will Hammock drops in for our Gwinnett Sports update presented by Tom Wages funeral home. Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services is inviting residents to participate in its nine-week Citizen's Fire Academy, beginning on April 19. Participants will learn about the fire and emergency service with both English and Spanish-speaking instructors. The program offers a behind-the-scenes look at fire department operations, including specialty teams such as Swiftwater Rescue, Technical Rescue, Hazardous Materials Team, and Mass Casualty response capabilities. Participants may also complete a ride-along with a station of their choice. The program is open to all, regardless of physical limitations or fears of heights or the dark. Applications are due by April 17. Two Gwinnett County schools, Berkmar High and Maxwell High School of Technology, have earned top state honors in the Georgia ProStart State Invitational, a high school program that teaches culinary techniques and management skills in an industry-driven curriculum. Berkmar's culinary team won the culinary arts division, while Maxwell's culinary management team placed first in the restaurant management division. Both schools will represent Gwinnett County in the Premier National High School Culinary Arts and Restaurant Management Competition in Washington, D.C. More than 400 students will take part in the three-day national competition, which will feature opening ceremonies, two days of competition and an awards dinner. The top five teams from both divisions will earn scholarships to continue their restaurant or food-service education. Free pizza for a year in Buford? Find out how you can get it

People who live in northwest Gwinnett County will have a chance to get a year's worth of free pizza next week. A new Pizza Hut location, which is run by Flynn Restaurant Group, opened at 1550 Buford Highway in Buford on Dec. 23, but it's what the new store has planned for its grand opening festivities next week that will have tongues salivating. The first 25 customers who are in line at the store on Jan. 6 will get free pizza for a year. There are some limits on what pizzas qualify for the free pizza for a year, and what locations the pizzas can be picked up at. The deal is only valid at locations owned by Flynn Restaurant Group — which happens to be Pizza Hut's largest franchisee and which owns 10 other Pizza locations in Gwinnett County. In addition to the Buford location, Flynn Restaurant Group also owns locations in Sugar Hill, Suwanee, Auburn, Dacula, Duluth, Lawrenceville, Lilburn, Loganville, Norcross and Snellville. It also owns 15 other locations in metro Atlanta, including stores nearby cities such as Cumming, Flowery Branch, Hoschton and Alpharetta. Other limitations on the free pizza for a year offer customers only being able to use it to get two complimentary specialty pizzas or up to three topping large pizzas per month for a year, a limit of one pizza per party, it only being valid on carryout orders, and it only being valid on Thin N' Crispy, original pan and hand tossed crusts. The new store is expected to add 15 new jobs to the Buford and Sugar Hill area. Now in its seventh decade of delivering compelling performances all over the world, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre — recognized by Congress as a vital American “Cultural Ambassador to the World” — will make its return to Atlanta's Fabulous Fox Theatre for a series of shows in mid-February. Led by artistic director Robert Battle, the Ailey troupe will showcase premiers, new productions and repertory favorites for five performances February 16-19 as part of a 22-city North American tour. While each performance will feature different choreographed works — including pieces by Kyle Abraham, Jamar Roberts and Twyla Tharp — each presentation will conclude with the stirring Ailey-choregraphed “Revelations,” which made its debut in 1960 and has been seen by more people than any other modern dance work. Ailey's Fox Theatre residency begins at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 16 with Tharp's 1997 piece “Roy's Joys,” a new production of the 1986 production of “Survivors,” Ailey's tribute to Nelson and Winnie Mandela, and “Revelations.  Tickets, starting at $29, are available at the Fox Theatre box office at 660 Peachtree St., or by calling 855-285-8499 or visiting www.alvinailey.org or www.foxatltix.com. The arts in Gwinnett made great strides in 2022 to return to the pre-COVID world, where more than one nonprofit was overjoyed to find their doors still open. As a result, the vitality and pure joy of being back on stage or opening gallery doors was evident in the work art lovers could again absorb. Below are just a few of the highlights that made this writer smile in 2022. There were so many great performances, great exhibitions, great moments that it is hard to choose. Spring was an exciting time for Gwinnett performing arts groups and audiences. ♦ Live Arts Theatre has been nurturing and growing talent for many years. In March, their efforts were enhanced when LAT Actor Rodney Johnson won Best Performer for his work in the play “Sea Wall” at both the Southeastern Theatre Conference and the Georgia Theatre Conference. ♦ The Aurora Theatre was the venue April 2-3 when Atlanta's amazing “Dance Canvas” highlighted the work of seven emerging choreographers. Dance Canvas' Founder and Director, Angela Harris, has a special relationship with the Aurora, having danced in a number of their productions over the years. ♦ Spring was also celebrated by the joining of two of the Southeast's premiere Barber Shop Choruses. Gwinnett's lauded Stone Mountain Chorus and Atlanta Harmony Celebration joined their voices together in a concert at Mountain Park's United Methodist Church on May 21. ♦ Also in May, Duluth photographer Mary Buck traveled to Spain and returned with another treasure trove of images. Buck is known for her extraordinary photos of birds, whether taken in her own backyard or on the other side of the world. Art Beat columns of summer and early fall seemed to be full of young, talented Gwinnett dancers finding success. ♦ Rachael Graham was once a featured performer at Gwinnett Ballet Theatre. Since this summer, she has sported a number of tiaras, dancing and singing as Disney Princesses on their Cruise Line in the Caribbean. ♦ Dreams came true for another ex-Gwinnett Ballet dancer. Runako Campbell is living the dream in New York City where she has performed in a variety of shows, commercials, and with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet. ♦ The Hudgens Center is one of Gwinnett's treasured arts entities, and The Hudgens Prize is a great example of how philanthropy can lift emerging artists into the spotlight. This year's winner is sculptor Olu Amoda who received the Prize with its $50,000 cash gift in October. ♦ “The Lion in Winter” was presented in early December by Lionheart Theatre, directed by Brandi Kilgore. Taking on such a renowned and powerful work is a true artistic test and certainly a highlight of Lionheart's season. As 2022 comes to a close, one more young artist is spreading wings and flying into her future. ♦ By the new year, 10-year-old Lillian Sears, who has trained at Duluth's Atlanta Professional Dance Academy, will begin studying at the Paris Opera Ballet. She is the first North American to be accepted into the POB's six-month audition program. Dreams do come true. Here's to 2023! Grayson's girls basketball team defeated Archbishop Chapelle (La.) 58-22 Thursday in the championship game of the St. Pius Christmas Classic. The Rams went 3-0 in the tournament, improving to 10-4 on the season. Tatum Brown was named tournament MVP, and Samara Saunders earned a spot on the all-tournament team. The Rams are back at home Friday where they'll open the New Year with a game against Brookwood. Georgia saw its population increase by 1.7% between 2020 and 2022, new numbers from the Census Bureau show. As of July 1, Georgia's population stood at more than 10.9 million, up from about 10.7 million at the same time in 2020. The Peach State's neighbor to the south, Florida, saw its population increase at a higher rate of 3% during the same timeframe, Census numbers show. South Carolina (2.9%), North Carolina (2.4%) and Tennessee (1.8%) also grew more than the Peach State, though Georgia has a higher population than the three states. However, Georgia's growth outpaced that of Alabama, which saw its population increase by 0.9%. A 27,000 square foot clubhouse is also in the works, complete with indoor and outdoor pools, a state-of-the-art fitness center, aerobics, card rooms, billiards, art studios and more. In addition, the clubhouse is right on the lake, meaning future residents can enjoy fishing, kayaking and other water activities. “On top of all that, we have a full-time lifestyle director,” said D'Amico. “She's there right now to get things rolling. She's already started to plan events with the homeowners and customers that are under contract. This is something that people can look forward to for many years to come. There will be groups and clubs to joins, concerts, dinners, dances. This allows everyone to stay on budget, while also allowing for the addition of unique upgrades along the way. “You can take a four-bedroom home that starts in the $220,000s, and you can add options to bring it all the way up to a $300,000s home,” said Feinberg. “Or, that $220,000 four-bedroom spaces is a very livable, move-in ready home.” Building in several cities and counties around Georgia, you can purchase a Piedmont Residential home in Cherokee, Paulding, Newnan and Hoschton. In the communities, available for all types of buyers, future homeowners have almost ten unique floorplans to choose from. These plans offer a wide set of desirable features including master on main plans, ranch style homes, flex space and three to five bedrooms. Pickens County is also home to the newest 55+ community available. Piedmont Village is an active adult community in Jasper, Ga. This community offers the August and the Waterford floorplan and starts from the $220,000s. The first plan is a ranch-style home with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The second plan is a three-bedroom home with two stories and a master on main layout. Both homes feature a built-in covered patio, perfect for outdoor living! “We are talking about them more as a cottage-style product,” said Feinberg. “They nestle in so well in the mountain scape of jasper. We are really excited about what is to come at Piedmont Village in 2020.” Another active adult community by Piedmont Residential is High Shoals. This established community is welcoming Phase II and is now taking presales. Interested buyers are encouraged to visit the beautifully decorated model home available for viewing onsite. The model home features the incredibly popular Turnbridge floorplan. To find out all about what's going on with Piedmont Residential, listen to the full interview above. So much of what makes a house a home is the personalization details a homebuyer selects and the ability to do so at an affordable price point is often a challenge. Eastwood Homes Atlanta Division President Steve Atchison joins Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick on this week's All About Real Estate segment to discuss the builder's focus and upcoming new Atlanta homes and communities. “We really try to focus on what the customer wants, and what the customer wants is some flexibility these days,” Atchison said. “A lot of the homes that customers may go out and shop today and consider buying, they're built by builders that do build a very good quality product, but they don't really offer a lot of options.” According to Atchison, many builders use their program and ability to purchase at lower prices to eliminate certain options, but one thing Eastwood Homes does that makes it unique is that its team does not have annual goals or objectives that reduce options, which allows homebuyers the ability to truly personalize their home. Currently, Eastwood Homes has new Atlanta homes available in Dacula and coming soon to Flowery Branch. Cambridge, a new Flowery Branch community of 130 homesites, will feature new single-family homes from the high $200,000s to low $300,000s. Home designs will range from 2,400 to 3,400 square feet and feature two-car garages. Community amenities will include a pool and cabana. New homes are also coming soon to Dacula at Windsor Knoll. Priced from the low $300,000s, this collection of 50 single-family homes will sit on oversized homesites and feature 2,600 to 3,400 square feet of living space with brick and stone exteriors, stunning kitchens and spa-like baths with options that include screen porches, sunrooms, optional third floors and more. Additionally, Eastwood Homes has been selected by Kolter Homes as a builder for new master-planned, active-adult community Twin Lakes coming soon to Hoschton, Georgia. Eastwood Homes prides itself on providing new homes that are Built with Care! Discovering meaningful responses for popular objections to Scripture and the Christian faith can build our faith and the faith of our families. In addition, it is possible that this process will help build God's Kingdom as we interact with people on a daily basis. And remember, when young people build a closer and stronger relationship with God, parents will benefit as their kids' behaviors are renewed by the Holy Spirit. Before having a profound experience with God, Dave Glander was a committed atheist. Since his encounter with Christ, Dave has become a devout believer in God and the Scriptures. Dave founded the ministries, Tied2Christ and Truth Ministries. Both of these ministries are centered on apologetics and are headquartered in Atlanta, GA. In addition, Dave is a co-founder of Equip Retreat, a summer camp for young people that is focused on apologetics, and he is a co-pastor for The Way, a church located in Hoschton, GA. Dave and his wife Stephanie live in the metro Atlanta area with their son, Marc. How Clarifying Popular Misconceptions Can Help Defend the Truth of Christianity On License to Parent, I often discuss the importance of being able to defend one's faith. Today, I have invited Dave Glander back to follow up on a program about this topic that we posted a couple of months ago. I wanted to continue our conversation with him because apologetics is something that I believe is important for a few reasons. Not only can it potentially help limit the amount of young people that are fleeing the church these days, it can also help mend broken families and keep them together. In many ways, Shepherds Hill Academy helps prove my stance on apologetics. Quite often, I watch troubled teens come to realizations about God, Jesus's work, and the Bible. They don't figure this stuff out because the staff members at SHA force them to accept it—that isn't something we would do. In fact, sometimes the initial distrust toward Christianity comes because these young people were forced into it at some point. But sometimes, when they are guided back toward the truth in a way they can swallow, they realize they actually can accept it. Sometimes, an initial resistance to Christianity begins when young people see the whole world acting by a different set of moral values than their Christian parents, and they begin to think, “How do my mom and dad know the truth when the rest of the world seems to offer a free life full of pleasure and entertainment?” And I can definitely understand how some teenagers could think this way. Today Dave Glander and I continue to discuss how apologetics can set the record straight for misconceptions about Christianity. Our conversation covers the following topics: Who is Dave Glander? How do I address my child's desire to protest, which seems to be a popular fad for teens today. The problem of participation trophies, and what parents should do. The importance of talking to your child. Why apologetics are vital. The cultural myth that your kids do not like the Bible. How to establish the validity of the Bible. How do I answer my child's questions about why there is suffering on this earth. Picture provided by: maxpixel.net

Why Parents and Kids Should Be Studying Christian Apologetics with Dave Glander [Podcast]

If parents and children knew the answers to the myriad objections to the Christian position on God, the Gospel, and the Bible, the reality of God would prompt parents to be more diligent in raising their kids according to the mandates of Scripture, and our young people might not be so eager to exit the church in droves. Additionally, parents probably would not be dealing with some of the struggles with their kids that that they are currently facing either. That, in and of itself, makes it worth heeding the Scriptural imperative to be prepared to defend our faith. Raising godly kids with the knowledge and the courage to defend their convictions is a recipe for emotionally healthy offspring. Dave Glander was a devout atheist prior to a radical encounter with Jesus Christ. He is now a deeply committed believer in Christ and the Bible. Dave is the founder of the apologetics-based ministry Truth Ministries which is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. He is also a co-pastor at The Way in Hoschton, Georgia and co-founder of an apologetics-based youth summer camp called EQUIP retreat. Dave is the author of the Faith Survival Guide apologetics curriculum. He owns and currates the Museum of Truth, an 1800-square-foot traveling biblical museum, and he has hosted his own radio program called What Is Truth. Dave currently lives in the Atlanta area with his wife, Stephanie, and their son, Marc. How Studying Christian Apologetics Can Help Answer Questions About the Faith Shepherds Hill Academy is proof that studying Christian apologetics is important. Quite often, I watch students make their own determinations about God, Scripture, and Christianity as they learn more about the faith. We do not force Shepherds Hill Academy students to trust in the Gospel or profess trust in Jesus, and we never would. Actually, sometimes the very thing that is motivating our students to rebel in the first place is the feeling that they have been forced into Christianity by their parents. At Shepherds Hill Academy, we simply try to respond to our students' uncertainty about the faith. We answer questions and explain why we believe what we believe. Many of the students at Shepherds Hill Academy come from families that, to some extent, accept Christianity and follow its principles. This doesn't apply to every student, but it does apply to the majority. A disconnect can occur in teens when they look at our culture and start to believe that the rest of the country has a different worldview and belief system, and, at least at that moment, they like what they see in our culture more than what they see in the faith of their parents. A worldly belief system that values the pursuit of whatever makes you feel happy seems pretty appealing to them. They may begin to think that there is no way their parents are right and this worldly belief system is wrong, and unfortunately, this is exactly what the devil wants them to think. Trace Embry and Dave Glander discuss how to keep kids strong in the faith as they discuss the following topics: Who is Dave Glander? How were Dave's atheistic beliefs changed? Why facts are not enough. Do you need a degree to pursue apologetics? Do other religions really have the amount of evidence as Christianity? How can parents get their teens involved in apologetics? Who are the upcoming thought leaders of apologetics? Picture provided by: John-Mark Smith
