Max talks with Jason Blair, a DPE, about multi-engine ratings and training challenges. Jason explains that most pilots pursue multi-engine ratings as add-ons to their commercial certificates. He advises following an efficient training path: private single-engine, instrument rating, commercial single-engine, and finally, the multi-engine add-on. https://www.lightspeedaviation.com/product/zulu-3-anr-headset/?campaign=Zulu%203&ref=63 Challenges with multi-engine training include mechanical delays, as many trainers are older aircraft, and higher accident rates during instruction. Jason highlights the VMC demonstration as a critical yet risky maneuver that simulates engine failure. Pilots must maintain control and recover methodically by managing power and airspeed, avoiding loss of directional control. Performance considerations include accelerate-stop distance, single-engine ceilings, and reduced performance in high-density altitude environments. Underpowered twins, like the Twin Comanche, demand careful handling during single-engine operations. Jason also stresses the importance of multi-engine instructors (MEIs) understanding systems thoroughly, teaching methodically, and prioritizing safety. He advises MEIs to practice emergency procedures during maintenance opportunities and conduct training at safe altitudes. Jason's Multi-Engine Oral Exam Guide serves as a valuable resource for pilots. He concludes with practical advice for pilots and instructors while sharing his contact details for further guidance. Max interviews Jason Blair about the FAA reauthorization bill and its implications for flight training and pilot certification. And Max reads listener stories and emails. Jason highlights a significant change allowing non-collegiate programs to qualify for restricted ATP certificates through enhanced qualification programs developed by airlines or FAA-approved training centers. This opens new pathways for aspiring pilots outside traditional collegiate programs. He also discusses the bill's focus on workforce development, including a GAO study on the pilot shortage and provisions to streamline the process for pilots training in experimental or limited category aircraft. Notably, the bill includes measures to improve the deployment and standardization of Designated Pilot Examiners (DPEs), such as creating a national oversight office and developing tools to better manage examiner availability and scheduling. Additionally, Jason mentions the upcoming removal of expiration dates from flight instructor certificates, aiming to reduce administrative burdens while still requiring instructors to maintain currency. Max and Jason Blair discuss recent changes in the FAA's aviation testing standards, notably the transition from PTS to ACS. Key updates include the conversion of the CFI test to ACS, introducing scenario-driven evaluations. New maneuvers, such as demonstrating flight characteristics under various conditions, have been added for CFIs. Instructors can now use pre-developed lesson plans, easing the preparation burden. Instrument rating changes allow using approaches with decision altitudes like LNAV/VNAV and mandate partial panel approaches to reflect real emergency scenarios. GPS databases must remain current. For commercial pilots, precision in power-off 180-degree landings is emphasized, and understanding ballistic parachute systems is required. These updates aim to modernize testing, aligning it with current industry practices and technology without drastically altering training content. The use of electronic flight bags (EFB) for planning and in-flight operations is now permitted, enhancing practicality. Jason assures that these changes will improve the evaluation process while maintaining consistency with previous standards, providing a seamless transition for candidates. Are you be able to spot fake news? Can you even define what fake news is? According to Jack Grieve, ‘fake news' is deceptive, it is intentionally trying to misinform its audience. Fake news is not the same as news that is untrue or false. But what exactly makes news fake? Are there any linguistic clues? Anything that gives away the intention to deceive? Can linguistic methods help us to find out? Surely there is lots of fake news out there that can serve as a data set for computational analysis? But not so fast! A key challenge is to find ‘real' news that you can usefully compare to fake news in order to see what the difference is. Listen to Jack Grieve explain his linguistic methodology for such a comparison. Hear about an intriguing case study that looks at a journalist who used to work for the New York Times. This journalist, Jason Blair, would sometimes produce real and fake news on the same day! Now, that's an exciting data set for linguists to work with! Jack Grieve is a Professor of Corpus Linguistics at the University of Birmingham. His research focuses on the quantitative analysis of language variation and change. He also conducts applied research in authorship analysis. Together with Helena Woodfield he has written the book The Language of Fake News. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/michaela-mahlberg/message

Project Zero is an educational research group at the Harvard Graduate School of Education dedicated to understanding and enhancing learning and thinking. But the secret to this conversation is that work in progressive learning has been going on for many years and it's having quite the impact, so we actually have quite a few clues about where to go in the future. How do we cultivate imagination, thinking with complexity, and taking action? Our guests are Jennifer Lehe, Jason Blair, and Britanie Risner, and they have some interesting answers for those questions. Jennifer is the Manager of Strategic Partnerships of the Columbus Museum of Art, calls herself a recovering right-answer seeker, and is fascinated by how we can create the conditions that encourage discovery and curiosity in kids; Jason is an 18-year veteran arts educator who says that, every day, he learns from the creative geniuses that he teaches; and Britanie is a 19-year veteran teacher staunchly believes in children's abilities to think and act in ways that move the world to be a better place. Jason explains that there is a shortage of designated pilot examiners who give checkrides, which is affecting people’s ability to schedule a checkride. He also said that if someone feels that an examiner is not conducting checkrides in accordance with the ACS, they can send comments to this FAA Email address for DPE/Practical Test Concerns. Then he talks about the important qualification process, which occurs at the beginning of a checkride. If a student doesn't have all the documents, correct endorsements, or hasn't met all of the experience requirements, he or she will be going home before the checkride even starts. He explains the most common oversights he sees during the qualification process, and encourages flight instructors to have a second CFI review a pilot's logbook and endorsements, to ensure that the pilot is qualified for the checkride, and won't be sent home early.
