We always cite our sources: While President Biden's ready to block Nippon Steel's acquisition of U.S. Steel, the CEO U.S. Steel said that without the sale, thousands of jobs will be at risk, and the company's headquarters might need to leave Pittsburgh. In a recent visit, VP and presidential candidate Kamala Harris said that U.S. Steel should remain American-owned and American-operated. About 400 U.S. Steel employees rallied Downtown in support of the sale, but the union's previously joined lawmakers in opposing the deal. The union supported a $7.3B offer from Cleveland-Cliffs, but U.S. Steel turned down the offer saying it was “unreasonable.” The union's concerned about loopholes in the current agreement, including one that lets Nippon Steel abandon promises in the case of “unanticipated or significant downturn in business conditions.” But for now, Nippon Steel committed to making $2.7B in improvements to our steel mills. City Council approved $2 million from the Stop the Violence fund to assist renters facing eviction. This is an expansion of a pilot program that prevented evictions in about three out of four cases. Neighbors living in a Highland Park duplex have been in a battle to one-up each other's political lawn signs, and it's getting intense this election season. The race for mayor of the city of Pittsburgh is heating up! He knew the city well from his earliest days but was never exposed to politics until his first day of college. Efforts to help save an HBCU he attended paid off and sparked a passion for civic involvement. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, he didn't leave the city until he went to college to see what the world had to offer. That journey ended with a gift for his mom: his diploma. Now a veteran of state and city politics, Rep. Ed Gainey sets his sights on the big office on Grant Street. Voters will decide if the man who defeated Mayor Bill Peduto in the Primary should serve as Pittsburgh's leader. So, what did he learn and how did working in two previous administrations help mold his work ethic and build his vision for government? Will he be able to bridge state and city politics or build relations with Harrisburg to benefit Pittsburgh? How does he view the city's bridges and topography? As a kid in the suburbs he had a deep passion for the city of Pittsburgh. That has obviously grown with time. To Bill Peduto, The job is magical. However, at what point did he begin to wonder if his dream as mayor was actually worth the effort and aggravation? After all politics has changed since he entered the scene years ago. Honestly, I was somewhat surprised yet extremely pleased that my request/invitation for an extended sit-down was accepted without hesitation. I very much enjoyed meeting Mr. Peduto in-person to discuss a wide range of topics: his youth, family, college, goals, first car, plans after he leaves Grant Street, Afghanistan refugees, and the sister-city of Wuhan, China, among many other things. Yes, I declared that he was the ‘Brett Keisel' of mayors due to his famous beard. How did he take that? And, why does the color of the beard not match the hairs on his head? And, speaking of color: what is up with the city's vehicle fleet? And, what was it that the Dalai Lama found so infatuating? What is ‘the spot' in Pittsburgh that truly signifies ‘home' to him? What about the riots, the demonstrations in front of his house, or the issues with policing? And, when did he know that the recent primary would not end favorably? Don't worry: the vacation he has planned will more than make up for any disappointment. On a very busy afternoon, the mayor of Pittsburgh spent much more time with me than was actually allotted. An unwarranted abduction of a bike marshal during a peaceful protest in Pittsburgh on August 15, 2020 sparked days of actions outside the home of Pittsburgh Mayor, Bill Peduto. This is because of Peduto's alarming response immediately following the abduction where he supports the incident and condemns the protestors - despite them having done nothing wrong. He immediately backpedals the next day, however, his statements become inconsistent and lacking any accountability. As protests continue, the police continue to escalate. Most recently, they set their sites on Lorenzo Rulli, well known activist and forced an arrest that was stated to be unwarranted by the DA. Kinsey Casey currently serves as the Chief Operating Officer for the City of Pittsburgh under Mayor Bill Peduto. She comes to the City of Pittsburgh after serving as the inaugural Chief of Staff at Emerge America, a national nonprofit that trains Democratic women to run for office. Previously, she served as the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh. Kinsey also served in the Obama Administration for seven years, as Chief of Staff for Secretary John Kerry’s Office of Global Partnerships at the U.S. State Department. Prior to her time at State, Kinsey was the National Security Director for Presidential Personnel at the White House, where she managed political appointments across national security-related agencies. She began her service in the Obama Administration at the Department of Homeland Security, where she managed domestic and international travel logistics for Secretary Janet Napolitano. Kinsey has worked on local, state and national campaigns and has held leadership roles in a number of large-scale events, including President Obama’s 2009 Inauguration and the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado. We talked to Kinsey about what exactly her job with the city involves (spoiler: there’s no “typical” day) and her love of bureaucracy (really!)

In 2015 Mayor Peduto signed a unique agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy to make the city a world leader in district energy production and Pittsburgh joined the UN's Compact of Mayors, a global coalition of climate leaders committed to local action and global impact. Dr. Bryce Meredig, is the host of DataLab: The Materials Informatics Podcast, and Chief Science Officer and co-founder of Citrine Informatics. Dr. Meredig researches the application of machine learning to materials science. He earned his PhD in materials science from Northwestern University, where he focused on materials informatics, and his BAS and MBA at Stanford University, where he is also on the faculty of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. A shooting victim's family shuns President Donald Trump in Pittsburgh as top officials decline to join him, but Rabbi Jeffrey Myers from the Tree of Life synagogue says that Trump is welcome. The president and first lady Melania Trump are scheduled to arrive in the late afternoon, several hours after the first funerals are held for the 11 victims of the mass shooting at Tree of Life synagogue. More than 1,000 people have so far signed up for a demonstration at the same time, declaring Trump “unwelcome in our city and in our country.” Congressional leaders from both parties — Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-WI), Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-NY) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) — have all declined invitations to join Trump on his visit, according to three officials familiar with matter. The city's Democratic mayor, Bill Peduto, will not be appearing with the president. Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, a Squirrel Hill resident who lives half a block away from the synagogue, will not be meeting with the president. Israeli Minister of Education Naftali Bennett has embarked on a visit to Pittsburgh “to be with our sisters and brothers in their darkest hour." As Bennett departs for the city, some members of Israel's governing Likud Party have issued talking points and statements blaming the victims of the anti-Jewish mass murderer for inspiring the attack. President Trump said he is preparing an executive order to end birthright citizenship in the United States. To accomplish the idea he floated on Tuesday, Mr. Trump would have to find a way around the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, which states, “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” The amendment means that any child born in the United States is considered a citizen. Amendments to the Constitution cannot be overridden by presidential action and can be changed or undone only by overwhelming majorities in Congress or the states, with a two-thirds vote of both houses of Congress or through a constitutional convention called for by two-thirds of state legislatures. The hypocrisy of strict constructionists.Miko Peled just published a piece titled "What It Means to be Israeli: Reflections on Identity From an Israeli Peace Activist" in MintPress. This horrific murder in Pittsburgh is shattering a stereotype that a lot of people in this country subscribe to: that Jews are a monolith. Peled writes, “A great number of the larger Orthodox communities, as in the state of New York, for example, are survivors of the Holocaust and are strictly anti-Zionist. Clearly, Israelis cannot identify with them.” A lot of Americans mistakenly believe that members of an Orthodox community who are Holocaust survivors would love to go to Israel. There are those in America who take issue with President Trump and the foreign policy of the Trump administration. Instead, he’d prefer to offer his perspective. He’s built a $40,000,000 real estate portfolio through hard work, persistence, and patience. Being raised by a single parent in a two bedroom, low income apartment in Mt. Oliver doesn’t usually breed success, but Joe Calloway’s story is anything but usual. Joe went from those unfortunate circumstances to being the largest single family home buyer in Pittsburgh. With little direction in life and few marketable skills, Joe enlisted in the US Navy in 1997. Using his military reenlistment bonus, Joe bought his first property in 2004. For his early projects he served as investor, contractor, designer, and property manager, giving him first-hand experience which proved to be invaluable. Joe formed RE360 in 2009 and has grown the company’s rental portfolio to 270 units with a monthly gross rental income of $229,000. 2014 alone saw the rags-to-riches Calloway invest $5 million and purchase 72 homes, making him the largest housing buyer in Pittsburgh for the second year in a row. Joe Calloway has no time for BS real estate gurus standing in front of Ferraris. Instead, he’d prefer to offer his perspective. He’s built a $40,000,000 real estate portfolio through hard work, persistence, and patience. Being raised by a single parent in a two bedroom, low income apartment in Mt. Oliver doesn’t usually breed success, but Joe Calloway’s story is anything but usual. Joe went from those unfortunate circumstances to being the largest single family home buyer in Pittsburgh. With little direction in life and few marketable skills, Joe enlisted in the US Navy in 1997. Using his military reenlistment bonus, Joe bought his first property in 2004. For his early projects he served as investor, contractor, designer, and property manager, giving him first-hand experience which proved to be invaluable. Joe formed RE360 in 2009 and has grown the company’s rental portfolio to 270 units with a monthly gross rental income of $229,000. 2014 alone saw the rags-to-riches Calloway invest $5 million and purchase 72 homes, making him the largest housing buyer in Pittsburgh for the second year in a row. Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto will likely see a second term in office after defeating two challengers in the May primary election—everyone locally is familiar with his name. But, President Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement pushed Peduto’s name into the national spotlight. When Trump justified his actions claiming to represent the people of Pittsburgh, the Mayor struck back saying, “I’m appalled that the President used my city to justify his unacceptable decision, as most other Pittsburghers are. I was one of the nation’s mayors who went to Paris to fight for the accords, and my city, which has finally bounced back from decades of industrial carnage, will do all it can to promote its own environmental standards.” Further, he and the mayor of Paris, Ann Hidalgo, published an op-ed in The New York Times. Grant Oliphant is president of The Heinz Endowments. For nearly two decades, Grant held several senior management posts with Heinz family foundations, including vice president for programs and planning at the Endowments, his position before taking over the helm at The Pittsburgh Foundation in 2008. He also served as press secretary to the late U.S. Sen. John Heinz from 1988 until the senator’s death in 1991. If there’s a major project happening in Pittsburgh, chances are that Oliphant is pulling the strings. His six-year tenure atop The Pittsburgh Foundation saw that organization increase its assets by a third in the middle of a recession; even more impressively, that foundation oversaw the recruiting and hiring of Mayor Bill Peduto’s senior staff through its Talent City initiative. Oliphant quickly has made his presence known at Heinz, which shortly after his arrival in May 2014 jettisoned a controversial connection to the Center for Sustainable Shale Development. Since then, he’s overseen the P4 Conference on urbanism in April, became the primary force in development of the 178-acre Almono site in Hazelwood, brokered the sale of the August Wilson Center for African American Culture to Heinz and other foundations and forged close ties to the Peduto administration. Dan Gilman is currently serving his first term as City Council member for the 8th Council District of Pittsburgh. Gilman has been very active in his first year on Council, having passed two pieces of legislation and a resolution aimed at reducing the discrimination and stigma pregnant women and nursing mothers continue to face. He has also been active in imploring the PA legislature to support the PA Women's Health Agenda. The Councilman worked extensively with the Mayor’s office to implement smart technology that will vastly improve City services such as snow removal, paving, online permitting, and the 311 system. He also called for online auctioning of unused equipment—including vehicles—as a revenue generating measure for the City; an idea that the mayoral administration has started to pursue. Gilman has received many awards and accolades for his hard work. He was selected as one of only twelve leaders nationwide to join The New DEAL, a national network committed to highlighting innovative ideas from state and local elected leaders. Bill Peduto was elected to the office of Mayor of the City of Pittsburgh in November 2013. Prior, he worked for 19 years on Pittsburgh City Council. A self-described “Reform Democrat”, Bill Peduto wrote the most comprehensive package of government reform legislation in Pittsburgh’s history. During Pittsburgh’s ongoing financial crisis, Bill Peduto has been the consistent voice of fiscal discipline. Decades of financial mismanagement and antiquated policies have left Pittsburgh with the highest debt ratio and lowest pension funding in the nation. He helped to write a new budget, lobbied to get others on board and after a year of hard work he was able to lead the city into a new five-year plan. He wasn’t afraid to make the tough votes to secure Pittsburgh’s future. The spirit of an entrepreneur is a rare and exciting energy. It comes in all aspects of business and even in Politics. Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto has championed the spirit of the entrepreneur by earmarking programs and initiatives to promote economic development at its core level. What we used to call Mom and Pop stores has spawned a new generation of small business owners who remain eager to do business in their neighborhoods and enjoy the fruits of their labor. Mayor Peduto didn't come from a political family, his family ran a small business in one of the Pittsburgh neighborhoods. So his roots are closely connected to being a business owner before turning to politics, Peduto did engage the spirit of an entrepreneur as the "The man behind the candidates" with his own business, Allegheny Political Resources. It was his love of politics, that led him to run for the seat of Mayor for the city of Pittsburgh. Mayor Peduto says the City of Steel is now the City of Learning. He speaks to me about the extensive opportunities for small, and large businesses here in Pittsburgh and the exciting programs geared for driven entrepreneurs.
