We cover how the dehumanizing immigration policy and rhetoric out of the Trump White House is hurting families, businesses, and the economy. As we've discussed a lot on this show, a story is many things at once. But a story does not exist without a storyteller. Today's episode is about the stories we tell ourselves, about ourselves, that in turn, define who we are.   How we show up in the world has a big influence on whether the world hears us. And if they can't hear us, how could we possibly make them care? Put differently, the stories we tell ourselves have a direct influence on the ideas that live in the world. Each of us, every day, in our own way, tell the world if we matter, and together, we shape a collective narrative of what matters. What would happen if we did that more consciously?    Samara Bay believes that how we share our vision matters as much as what it is. She's actively redefining what power and authority sound like, teaching people how to use their voice to move their audience & change the world. In addition to coaching television & film actors, she's prepped clients for Broadway & LA theater, UN speeches, televised award show presentations, academic talks, tech pitches, and political ads. She also runs trainings and delivers keynotes across industries including for Women @Google, MAC Cosmetics, SXSW, Telemundo, Warner Brothers Discovery, Princeton University, Compass, and Emerge America. She's a professor of practice at USC's Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism.   Samara is also the author of a fantastic book and podcast by the same name, Permission to Speak: How to Change What Power Sounds Like, Starting With You. It's a #1 bestseller in Women & Business and Public Speaking and the perfect holiday gift!    In this episode, our host, Maya Guice, sits down with Samara Bay to explore how traditional perceptions of authoritative voices influence our communication, the ways our voice stories shape the narratives we share, her personal journey writing Permission to Speak, and practical tools we can all use to cultivate a voice that feels both authentic and powerful.   Ultimately, this episode is meant to be a holiday gift to you—an audience of amazing, creative, intelligent people. If the sound of your voice is the only thing holding you back, we hope this episode causes you to share your story in 2025.    For more information about Samara, connect with her: https://bit.ly/3OT3zHf    To purchase Permission to Speak: How to Change What Power Sounds Like, Starting With You, visit: https://bit.ly/4g8SIES    For more information about BRC Imagination Arts, visit: www.brcweb.com

Julia Haart is a self-made businesswoman, designer, and bestselling author. She was raised in an Ultra-Orthodox Jewish community. At age 42 she fled, changed her name, and without any formal education or background in fashion launched her career as a designer with her namesake shoe collection. Just a few years later, she was named creative director of La Perla and would become co-owner and CEO of Elite World Group and one of the most influential people in fashion. In 2021, Julia and her NETFLIX hit series "My Unorthodox Life", which streams in over 190 countries, took the world by storm. In her memoir BRAZEN, Julia writes with radical vulnerability and honesty, sharing her deeply personal journey of heartbreak, resilience, and courage to flee a fundamentalist community. Released in April 2022, BRAZEN became an instant bestseller in the U.S. and U.K. Above all else, Julia applies her experience and platform to be a force for positive change in the world and supporting women who have dedicated their lives to building a better future.  With the right for women to choose under threat, Julia has taken a leading role in the pro-choice movement marching in support of women's rights, rallying her community of influential friends and followers, supporting organizations such as #VoteProChoice and Plan C, and serving on the Advisory Council of the Equal Rights Amendment Coalition. With so much at stake at home in the U.S., Julia has also worked tirelessly to campaign for pro-choice politicians and support organizations such as Emerge America to help recruit and train like-minded women to run for office. As a champion of democracy globally, Julia fights for the right to freedom around the world including Iran and Ukraine where she led a mission to deliver ambulances and critical humanitarian supplies.

Christina Harbridge is a behaviorist, keynote speaker, and the CEO of Allegory, Inc., a behavioral leverage company partnering with organizations and their leaders to amplify their abilities to work with and through others. She has partnered with neurobiologists, behavioral and data scientists, physicians, and artists to apply rigor to behavioral data. As an artist and storyteller, Christina served on the founding board of Emerge America and as chair of the Global Leadership Conference. She is the author of Swayed, which covers deliberate and nuanced storytelling methods. In this episode… In leadership positions, men often extinguish or appropriate women's ideas and characteristics. Consequently, women leaders become subdued, withholding their struggles and hiding parts of themselves that make them unique. How can you exhibit your authenticity to promote self-acceptance and build healthy relationships? Traditional capitalist cultures suppress nuanced communication, reducing honest storytelling to an ingenuine marketing strategy. Behaviorist and master storyteller Christina Harbridge says synthetic communication is not viable and advocates for transparency and authentic vulnerability instead. This involves embracing your imperfections and strengths to gain the confidence to advocate for yourself and others. Andrea Heuston joins Christina Harbridge, CEO of Allegory, Inc., in today's episode of the Lead Like a Woman Show to talk about displaying authenticity and leading with strength. Christina shares how she fostered a culture of humanity through her debt-collection business, her passion for encouraging women to run for government positions, and the power of authentic vulnerability.

About our Guest:Christina Harbridge is a behaviorist who trains and coaches individuals, teams and large groups to understand and leverage their own personal operating system when dealing with others who may or may not be rational.  Christina's early experience as founder and CEO of a debt collection agency that collected debt through unorthodox tactics (such as being nice) shaped her worldview on workplace communication. Employees focused their interactions on filling a person's need to feel understood through emotionally literate tactics, rather than focusing on trying to collect a debt that may not even have been owed. This values-based tactic, reinforced by bonuses paid on thank-you notes received, reinvigorated the industry by resulting in collections three times higher than the industry average. The proof was in the wedding invitations.Christina has co-authored software, built and sold a successful finance industry company, practiced acrobatic swing dancing, participated as a NASA test subject and collaborated to design and weld several large-scale metal sculptures. She has served her community on the founding boards of The Bay Lights and Emerge America. It's been a while since I recorded an episode, so apologies for that, but I think you're going to like the changes we've made over the last few months. First, I'm making episodes a little shorter - just the right length to listen to on a three mile run, and because this podcast is a great cure for insomnia, you can also use it to knock out at night. Second, we're now recording UnfairNation at Arizona State University's beautiful and historic Herald Examiner Building in downtown Los Angeles. As some of you may know, I run The Difference Engine at Arizona State University, where we build products communities can use to reduce inequality. I'll be sharing more information about our work later in the year, and also introducing you to the students who will help research the content for this podcast as well as edit and produce it. In the meantime, I want to give a shoutout to Aubrey Hicks, The Engine's Chief of Staff, who helped produce and organize this episode. So! On to Dulce! I met Dulce when I first started at ASU. She's got more energy than almost anyone I know and she was one of the first supporters (and currently serves as the first fellow) at the Difference Engine. Last year, she announced her candidacy for Los Angeles City Council District 9 and by all accounts ran a stellar grassroots campaign to unseat an incumbent politician. Despite her tremendous efforts and those of her team, she failed to unseat him. In her quest for political office are important lessons for those thinking of running. The electoral system in this currently has been inherently unfair since this country's founding, and because the system is so tilted, many people today think that running for office is one of the last ways to influence positive public policy change. By far, the most popular story from my book The Empathy Edge is the story of Christina Harbridge and her magical collection agency. The story of how she created a culture of empathy that led to transforming a usually bleak work environment into a thriving culture, resulting in success rates 3X the industry average and whose clients would send thank you cards and wedding invitations! How did she do it? What is she doing now? Is the agency still around? These are all questions I get and ones Christina herself is here to talk us through today. We also speak about how she accidentally stumbled on this business model - and how she now teaches leaders to do the same. She shares the biggest obstacles leaders face in transforming their cultures and breaking outdated models - and the financial success that comes from treating employees and customers with dignity, respect, and empathy. Finally, we talk about the important role of systems design in ensuring your company can actually live out it's values day to day and make them more than a talking point. Key Takeaways:The goal of your first interaction should never be to complete a transaction or whatever your agenda is, but to gather trust and to find out the truth. Empathy is not a strategy. It is a feeling and a mindset. To have a strong team, you need to have people that work differently than you do. Empathy is required to be curious and open to understanding the needs of those teammates.  "What we were doing was filling people's basic need to feel understood, which is an underlying need. That drives commitment." —  Christina Harbridge Christina Harbridge, Mischief Executive Officer, AllegoryChristina Harbridge is a behaviorist who trains and coaches individuals, teams and large groups to understand and leverage their own personal operating system when dealing with others who may or may not be rational.Christina's early experience as founder and CEO of a debt collection agency that collected debt through unorthodox tactics (such as being nice) shaped her worldview on workplace communication. This program is part of our Good Lit series, underwritten by the Bernard Osher Foundation. The United States experiences the highest number of school shootings in the world. Shannon Watts decided to do something about it. In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, Watts, a mother of five and former communications executive, started Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, an organization that advocates for gun regulation reform. Moms Demand Action has grown into one of the largest and most far-reaching organizations in American politics with a grassroots network in all 50 states and millions of supporters. Under Watts' leadership, Moms Demand Action has enjoyed a 93 percent success rate in beating the NRA in state legislatures. In her forthcoming book, Fight Like a Mother: How a Grassroots Movement Took on the Gun Lobby, Watts recounts how she and other mothers turned their outrage into action to drive progress in gun safety. The book celebrates the unique strength and power of women and highlights the potential for everyone to engage in everyday activism. In addition to her work with Moms Demand Action, Watts is the founder and board chair of Rise to Run, an organization dedicated to mobilizing young progressive women to run for office, and an active board member of Emerge America. Gun safety and voting rights and abortion, oh my! The end of the 86th Texas Legislature is just a few days away (May 27!) so things are moving at lightning speed over at the Capitol. It's hard to drink from the drama firehouse at this point, but we're trying! Super organizer and Annie's List powerhouse Shellie Hayes-McMahon filled in for Ashley this week and dropped some serious truth bombs about local elections, why representation matters in our cities, and how those of us who aren't people of color can go about making ourselves into allies and accomplices. We talked to shero A'shanti Gholar, who is helping women of color claim the power they deserve with The Brown Girls Guide to Politics. And so much more! PRESENTING SPONSOR: Today's episode of The Rabble is brought to you by… ROUSER! Did you know that you can hire us to throw events? This past Sunday we threw a book launch party for political photographer Casey Chapman-Ross, who said it was beyond everything she'd hoped for. We turned out a couple hundred people to The Butterfly Bar here in Austin, where we moderated a panel of fierce female activists, played a trivia game about where famous Texan rabble-rousers got their start, and heard from pint-sized lemonade stand activists.
