Alex Andreou and Naomi Smith welcome special guest LBC host James O'Brien to discuss Starmer's trip to Washington. What is the best he could come back with? And was raising defence at the expense of aid worth it? And of course 'Wokey Dokey' and 'Grin And Share It'. ***SPONSOR US AT KO-FI.COM/QUIETRIOTPOD*** “The idea that history was over, because the Cold War was over, the Berlin Wall had come down, and liberal democracy had prevailed over the extremes of fascism or communism, was irresistible in 1989. So, this isn't just about Ukraine. It's about recognising we're returning to an unsafe world.”  “This defence spending announcement is a signal, an in-principle decision, that we are entering an era where hard power matters more than soft power. It is difficult to disagree with that assessment of the world right now.” “The bottom line is: the world changed last week in ways that nobody could have foreseen. And Starmer has done the thing that Starmer is quite good at - when the facts have changed he's changed his mind.” “Badenoch channels the worst of Penny Mordaunt and Liz Truss. It's 50% Mordaunt shouting ‘stand and fight and stand and stand and fight and stand' and 50% Truss going ‘we've got 10 and 1/2 minutes to save Western civilisation.” “The problem is many of the benefits of soft power are intangible - you can't easily put a dollar value on a population not being displaced or someone not becoming radicalised. But it feels instinctively like it must be cheaper than hard power.” “Yes, using a logical train, in light of everything Trump has said and done, NATO is over. But using logical trains, when it comes to Trump is pointless. So until someone makes a compelling case of why it is in Trump's personal interest, even NATO is subject to his caprice.” “It's so hard to look at everything not through a lens of normality bias. I've caught myself so often, lately, thinking: this can't be as bad as it looks, because I am biased towards believing that the danger cannot be as great as it appears.” CALLS TO ACTION LINKS: Click to find out more about Help for Heroes. Jemma and Marina barely know where to begin. The Trawl content is simply relentless as the campaign trail continues. However, it seems to makes sense to start with the recently announced Tory manifesto and go from there. The hitting the skids type jokes write themselves. Then it's on to Sunak's latest set of gaffes and the heart-wrenching discovery that he didn't have Sky. The poor widdums, how did he cope? Then it's a rewind as we go back to the debate which featured a member from each of the main parties. It's a good opportunity to hear from Carla Denyer from the Green Party and SNP leader, Stephen Flynn. There's a whole section dedicated to Penny Mordaunt's hair which was truly incredible, for all the wrong reasons. Marina and Jemma are blown away by quite how empty Nigel Farage's policies are when scrutinised and a plea to the people of Clacton to vote for the young Labour candidate who Marina spoke to on the phone. There's a tribute to TV Doctor Michael Mosley and the Trawl ladies feel compelled to mention the ongoing situation in Israel and Palestine. Then it's onto the underrated clips and tweets of the week which are gold. The clip of a Reform candidate talking about why the airport made him go into politics will have you scratching your heads. As ever, The Trawl ladies don't hold back. What a time to be alive! In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Janine La Salle from UC Davis about her work on differential methylated regions in autism spectrum disorders. In our discussion, Janine LaSalle highlights her work on the placental epigenetic signature, which offers insights into the impact of fetal exposures and gene-environment interactions during the perinatal period. She emphasizes the placenta's value as a surrogate tissue for understanding human diseases. Her research on DNA methylation in the placenta across different mammalian species reveals consistent patterns in partially methylated and highly methylated domains. She explains the critical role of higher methylation levels in specific regions for gene expression and how this knowledge helps trace the placenta's developmental history. The conversation then delves into Dr. LaSalle's research on the link between placental DNA methylation and autism. Through epigenome-wide association studies, she discovered a novel autism gene and explored the effects of prenatal exposures on DNA methylation profiles. Additionally, she discusses the impact of maternal obesity on offspring neurodevelopment. Ultimately, the goal of her research is to contribute to precision public health and preventative healthcare with epigenetic signatures offering high potential for predicting and preventing future health problems. In the end, all of Boris Johnson's bluster couldn't hide the facts: He didn't have the votes to win the Conservative Party leadership contest and stage a political comeback just weeks after being forced out as prime minister. The former Tory leader raced back from his Caribbean holiday to test the waters and try to garner the support of enough MPs to proceed to the next round. But as British media counted the number of declared supporters for Johnson, it cast doubt on whether he could cross the 100-vote threshold. “Essentially, the Boris Johnson bandwagon blew up,” said Tim Bale, a professor of politics at Queen Mary, University of London. “He really doesn't seem to have attracted anything like as much support as he hoped he would.” Sajid Javid, Rishi Sunak and Prime Minister Boris Johnson arrive at No 9 Downing Street in 2021. Photo / AP, File The 58-year-old Johnson is one of the most recognised — and divisive — figures in British politics. The self-deprecating court jester of a figure led the Conservative party to a thumping election victory in 2019 with his bombastic speeches and populist policies. But critics were repulsed by what they saw as a penchant for bending the rules and embroiling the party in a series of scandals that torpedoed its standing with voters. Johnson's three tumultuous years in Downing St featured allegations that he gave lucrative government contracts to wealthy supporters, allowed a senior Cabinet minister to bully subordinates and improperly used political donations to redecorate his official residence. He was finally brought down by suggestions that he mishandled sexual misconduct charges against a party official, which forced him to step aside after more than 50 Cabinet secretaries and lower-level officials resigned from his government. But Johnson's downslide was encapsulated in the long-running controversy over Downing St parties in 2020 and 2021 that violated Covid-19 lockdown rules. With an investigation into whether Johnson intentionally misled Parliament about those parties to get underway in coming weeks, the scandal hung over Johnson's bid to return to power like a guillotine. If the inquiry by a committee of MPs finds Johnson in contempt of Parliament, he could be suspended from Parliament and face a recall election. That's not something Conservative MPs want as they try to unite the party, and the nation, behind the spending cuts and tax increases likely needed to restore the nation's financial credibility after outgoing Prime Minister Liz Truss' failed experiment with trickle-down economics. “This all started because Boris Johnson was unable to run the government in the right way to keep it together … and to uphold the high standards of conduct that are necessary in the highest offices in the land,” former party leader William Hague told Times Radio on Friday. “So the idea that him returning is the solution — that ... could become a death spiral of the Conservative Party.” Johnson's supporters tried to shrug off such criticism. Instead, they focused on the idea that their man made the right decisions when it mattered — leading Britain out of the European Union, rapidly rolling out vaccines to combat the coronavirus pandemic, and being among the first to send arms to Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. Just hours before Johnson bowed out, one of his most vocal supporters went on BBC television's influential Sunday morning political interview show and claimed he already had the support of more than 100 members of Parliament. Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his wife Carrie Johnson. Photo / Getty Images “I have been speaking to Boris Johnson and, clearly, he is going to stand,” said Jacob Rees-Mogg, who was a member of Johnson's Cabinet. “There is a great deal of support for him.” But media vote counts never supported the bluster. As the leading candidate, Rishi Sunak raced past with 150 backers, Johnson's support stalled at 76, according to the Guido Fawkes website, which focuses on UK politics. The BBC counted just 57 Johnson supporters. Matthew Parris, a columnist for the Times of London, saw the Boris boosterism as a strategy to scare off opposition. “Momentum is being manufactured through creating an impression that Johnson is already on his way to victory,” Parris wrote. “Mysterious reports on social media suggest he's surging ahead among those MPs who are declaring — but the identities of some of these are undisclosed. They will [we're assured] reveal themselves ‘later.'” Johnson tried another gambit Sunday, trying to persuade Sunak and Penny Mordaunt, the third candidate, to drop out and support him as the only candidate with the broad appeal to unite the party at this difficult time. Sunak and Mordaunt called his bluff. “I think he thought the shock and awe campaign might persuade Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt perhaps to surrender to him, to the supposedly inevitable,” Bale said. “But they were much cleverer and realised that it wasn't inevitable at all.'' Conservative Party leadership candidate Penny Mordaunt, left, and Andrea Leadsom arrive at the BBC studios, in London on Sunday. Mordaunt dropped out of the race. Photo / AP Johnson blustered on until Sunday night, when it became clear he couldn't count on the party's right-wing for support. He threw in his cards after Suella Braverman and Steve Baker, who had backed him as leaders of the pro-Brexit European Research Group, gave their support to Sunak. Alex Crowley, a one-time Johnson aide, said his former boss probably did have enough support to get on the ballot. But that wasn't enough to overcome questions about whether he was the right person to unite the party months after dozens of MPs refused to serve in his government. “There were lots of influential voices within the party who were saying, ‘actually you know, this isn't the right time, this isn't the right call',” Crowley told the BBC. “And, you know, Boris' natural instinct is, if he can't win then he doesn't want to compete.” But don't expect Johnson to fade from the political scene. When Johnson left office in early September, he suggested he was planning to return to Downing St. First, he left the House of Commons with the words “hasta la vista, baby”, conjuring images of Arnold Schwarzenegger who famously promised to return as The Terminator. Then he left Downing Street with an allusion to Cincinnatus, the Roman dictator who laid down his arms and went back to his farm before coming out of retirement to rule Rome again. On Sunday night, Johnson hinted his return had been delayed, not cancelled. Boris Johnson speaks during the Nato summit in Madrid. Photo / Getty Images, File With the next general election expected in late 2024, there's likely to be another leadership contest in the coming months unless Sunak can quickly unite the Conservatives. “I believe I am well placed to deliver a Conservative victory in 2024,” Johnson said late Sunday. “But in the course of the last days I have sadly come to the conclusion that this would simply not be the right thing to do,” he said. “You can't govern effectively unless you have a united party in Parliament.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There's not much to inspire in the contenders for the crown:Rishi SunakSunak was behind the UK Government's abandonment of its commitment to spending 0.7% of its GDP on developmental aid. Cutting this budget will have a detrimental effect on countries that receive British foreign aid, such as Yemen and Afghanistan. As already mentioned, these countries are likely to struggle even more this year, and it is unlikely as a candidate he will commit to repealing these reforms as lowering foreign aid is a popular policy within the Conservative Party.Penny MordauntMordaunt has voted for military action in both Iraq and Syria, as well as for the continued deployment of British troops in Afghanistan. She has a military background as a Royal Navy Reservist and has a month-long stint as Defence Secretary. Mordaunt has vowed to increase defence spending, and it is likely she would favour a Hawkish foreign policy.Mourdant was appointed Secretary for International Development on 9th November 2017, leaving in April 2018. She has made concerning statements since leaving the position, such as suggesting in June 2020 that some foreign aid should instead be spent on a replacement for the Royal Yacht Britannia.Liz TrussLiz Truss received the support of 64 MPs in the second round. Liz Truss is perhaps even more Hawkish than Mourdant, and has been backed by some of the prominent figures on the right of the Conservative Party, such as Jacob Rees Mogg and Nadine Dorries. Since becoming Foreign Secretary in September 2021, she has tried to style herself after Thatcher and has been aggressive in opposing Russia when it comes to the situation in Ukraine. However, this has led to her pushing Middle Eastern issues to the periphery. Questioned by a committee of MPs, she highlighted the important status of the Gulf States as allies but declined to say whether she had questioned their governments on their arguably weak human rights records.Kemi BadenochIn fourth place in the second round with 49 MPs backing her was Kemi Badenoch. Badenoch is a rising star in the party, positioning herself as an ‘anti-woke' candidate. When it comes to foreign affairs, she has said she ‘doesn't care' about colonialism. These attitudes could lead to worse relations with Middle Eastern countries, as many of them suffered from colonialism. Badenoch doesn't believe ‘institutional racism' exists in the UK, which might affect the way refugees are treated in the UK, many of whom coming from countries like Syria and Afghanistan.Tom TugendhatTom Tugendhat came fifth in the second round with 32 MPs backing him. He has experience in the Middle East, having served as a soldier in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Tugendhat did a Master's degree in Islamic studies and is fluent in Arabic, which would both be useful in working with Middle Eastern countries. Tugendhat came to national attention for his strong criticism of the Western withdrawal from Afghanistan, calling it the “biggest foreign policy disaster since Suez.” He is also a strong supporter of Israel, condemning the United Nations for its official criticism of Israeli settlements. He has suggested that other disputed territories should also receive attention, such as Western Sahara, Kashmir and Tibet.Tugendhat has accused Iran of funding terrorists, which could make work on a Nuclear Deal difficult. He has also praised Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman in 2018 for having a positive impact on his country and the world. Tugendhat also vocally opposed the cut in the foreign aid budget. Tugendhat is seen by some to be on the left of the Conservative Party, yet some of his statements on Israel and Saudi Arabia show an interesting approach to the Middle East. Support the show
